Combining Nevada's gorgeous deserts and California's finest parks and forests into an epic adventure, the road trip from Las Vegas to Yosemite National Park is one you'll remember forever.

The 370-mile road trip from Las Vegas to Yosemite National Park will take 6 hours 20 minutes of driving. The route passes through Death Valley, Inyo National Forest, and Mammoth Lakes, or via Bakersfield and past Sequoia and Sierra National Forests.

You could miss some amazing places if you so much as blink on the way, so read on to get an idea of what you're in for.

How far is Yosemite National Park from Las Vegas and how long will the road trip take?

The road trip from Las Vegas to Yosemite National Park can be done in about 6 hours 20 minutes and covers around 370 miles. The scenic itinerary will have you driving along Death Valley, then the impossibly scenic Sierra Nevada range and its constituent parks.

Although you could definitely do this drive in a day, gas and food breaks included, you'll definitely want to stretch it out as much as possible in the interest of seeing everything there is to see on the way.

This route comes with a serious caveat - you can only enter Yosemite from the east (via Tioga Pass) between May and November. If you want to visit the park another time of year, you'll have to drive around the Sierras and cut through most of central California.

In other words, during the rest of the year, your best option is a 9-hour drive covering about 510 miles. This route trades the Sierras for a series of beautiful forests and some larger cities, so think of it as a comparably scenic alternative.

Best road trip route from Las Vegas to Yosemite National Park

The best road trip route from Las Vegas to Yosemite National Park depends on what you're after - if you're aiming for speed and are traveling the right time of year, driving along the Sierras is the quicker option, on top of being scenic.

With that said, it's definitely worth considering the longer route too, since you get to see some beautiful landscapes unique to it, on top of having several large cities at various points of the trip.

If you choose to travel on the Central California Route, you will use the South Entrance to the Park, whereas the Tioga Pass Route will take you to the Tioga Pass Entrance (closed in winter). If you prefer to use another entrance, you can use our detailed guide to help you decide.

How to drive from Las Vegas to Yosemite National Park

The Tioga Pass Route

Follow U.S. Route 95 out of Las Vegas, past Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Follow the highway along Death Valley, then take State Routes 266 and 168 to get into California and onto Highway 395 at Big Pine.

Stop a bit further north at Bishop if you want, then continue past a series of scenic Sierra Nevada peaks and pass Mammoth Lakes on the way to Inyo National Forest.

Once you're (literally) out of the woods, make a left onto State Route 120 when you see Mono Lake to your right, and follow it through Tioga Pass. On this route, you will use the Tioga Pass Entrance (open in the summer months).

The Central California Route

Take Interstate 15 south out of Las Vegas and follow it between Mojave National Preserve and Death Valley. At Barstow, get on US Route 58 and follow it all the way to Bakersfield.

Going north from here, you'll be passing directly through Fresno, and just past Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Once in Fresno, take State Route 41 north and pass Sierra National Forest, and you'll soon pass through Oakhurst and Fish Camp to reach the South Entrance of Yosemite National Park.

Best places to stop between Las Vegas and Yosemite National Park

Much of California is laid out with tourism in mind, so you can expect to find plenty of amazing accommodation on the way from Las Vegas to Yosemite National Park. If we had to pick the best hotels available during this trip, it would have to be these:

Relax in a literal oasis in Death Valley

As scorching as Death Valley can get in the summer, the park is incredibly popular with many of the States' most famous entertainers. A lot of that has to do with the world-class resorts, the best one being The Inn at Death Valley .

You'll need a place to cool off after a grueling, sweaty hike, and The Inn does not disappoint – thanks to the beautiful outdoor pool featuring loungers and a gorgeous fireplace, you'll be patting yourself on the back for having found such a perfect respite from the Mojave heat.

After exploring the beautiful property, you can further unwind with a massage at the spa, have a traditional meal at the on-site restaurant, enjoy a drink before bed at the bar, or even try your hand at golf or a variety of other sports and activities.

Soak in the scenery at Yosemite National Park

The biggest obstacle in trying to plan a trip to Yosemite might be finding a fairly priced hotel. Different parts of the park shine at different times of the year, but the Tenaya Lodge, with its countless on-site activities, is always an amazing choice.

Yosemite is all about the outdoors, and Tenaya Lodge really drives that point home – what little time you're not spending exploring the park, you'll be partaking in a variety of activities like rock climbing, archery, and skiing.

Things to see on a road trip from Las Vegas to Yosemite National Park

Although it's hard to quantify, getting from Las Vegas to Yosemite National Park is just as much of an adventure as the park itself, if not more. What you'll want to do is give yourself a couple of weeks to check out all of the following places:

• Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area – providing the iconic rocky backdrop to the city of Las Vegas, this area is definitely worth checking out up-close. You might need to make a reservation for a timed-entry slot, so check the official website before traveling.
• Death Valley – while its reputation as the hottest place in North America precedes it, an informed and researched visit could result in an unforgettable experience
• Bishop – a much-welcomed city to take a break in after slicing through the Mojave Desert
• Manzanar – despite (or rather, because of) its gruesome history with mass incarceration of Japanese-Americans, Manzanar remains a very important historical relic to this day
• Inyo National Forest – home to Mt Whitney, one of the tallest peaks in all of the States, this forest is as epic as they come
• Mammoth Lakes – although it probably thrives the most in colder seasons, the fairytale-like quality of this town makes it very hard to pass up
• Mono Lake – less of a swimming spot and more of a scenic curiosity, this saline lake is also one of the oldest in the States
• Stanislaus National Forest – a lush forest bearing the name of the Stanislaus River, which cuts right through it
• Bodie State Historic Park – what used to be a booming miner's town is now a popular destination for self-directed tours
• Mojave National Preserve – featuring both Joshua trees and the abandoned town of Kelso, there's a little something for everyone at this preserve
• Calico – lots of effort has gone into keeping this now-abandoned silver mining town as similar to its original design as possible
• Bakersfield – barring Las Vegas itself, this is the biggest city along the route and one of its more glaringly obvious stopovers
• Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks – the beautiful wildlife and the world's largest trees help these parks stand out among their stiff Californian park competition
• Fresno – this city's surrounded by all manner of beautiful landmarks, technically making it the proper west gateway into Yosemite National Park
• Sierra National Forest – this forest stands out among its neighbors thanks to its beautiful, crystal-clear lakes
• Mariposa Grove – this beautiful adjunct to Yosemite is home to some of the oldest and biggest sequoias known to exist

Best time to go on a road trip from Las Vegas to Yosemite National Park

The great thing about doing a road trip from Las Vegas to Yosemite is that the park is among the most welcoming nature retreats in the States, no matter the season.

One thing that slightly complicates matters is Vegas' position relative to Yosemite - the only way to enter the park from the east is only available for about half a year, with the exact opening and closing dates depending on the weather in a particular year.

Assuming this isn't a problem for you, you can do the trip in the summer, when most people visit the park for the nature views and the easy access to hiking trails.

Avoiding crowds is also quite simple - visiting in May or September should guarantee you a quieter and cheaper stay. September is probably the safer of the two options, as you might get the occasional inaccessible road even in late spring.

The abundance of wintertime activities makes December, January, and February great months to visit the park. It's also convenient that you'll be passing through Bakersfield and Fresno, giving you some stopovers if the weather catches you off-guard.

We got to the bus around 6:10, then we went to the restroom that was in the bus terminal. When we returned we met our tour guides and then settled into our seats. We had a whole day exploring New York City the day before so we were extremely sleepy. We slept for most of the ride, then we woke up in Delaware. We stopped and ate a little bit here, we were there for roughly 30-45 minutes. We got back on the Bus and got to all of the scheduled tour spots. Yeah, you're gonna be on a bus often, but you will have a lot of time to walk around the sites, and take lots of pictures. Almost everything is free except for food, but make sure you eat at the National Air and Space Museum. We got back to New York around 9, there was no traffic on the way back which was nice. It all depends on the day. We went on a Friday, then we took the subway and got back to our hotel around 9:30. The meeting spot is basically in Times Square, so there are a lot of places where you could eat late at night. We ended up just ordering takeout at our hotel and rested. Being from Australia, we hadn’t originally intended to go to Washington as it was too far out of the way, but after seeing this excursion advertised we thought it was an opportunity to tick a lot of boxes. Guide Armin was excellent very informative and entertaining. Was great to experience the major stops, Arlington Cemetery inc JFK’s grave, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam & Korean memorials. Capital Building, The White House, Lunch at the Aerospace Museum. Awesome to see all these iconic places personally, which are so familiar to everyone. Downside no fault of the operators or guides……was t selfishness and entitlement of others not listening to instructions about returning on time at the stops……not only making the day longer but those who did return on time were left sitting on the bus waiting and unfortunately there were the same people doing it. There were several language groups on the bus so it was a bit annoying trying to listen to the English while the other guide was also speaking. The guide was very pleasant but not very informative- she did have to translate into German as well. The winery wasn’t ready for us and kept us waiting and the gentleman was not very friendly. The outlet shopping was of no interest to us - we would have rather spent more time in the Hamptons. We would have liked to have had some photo stops along the way. Not something you want to rent a car and do yourself. Traffic in/out of NYC is nightmarish!! But our capable driver was up to the challenge and safely delivered us to our breakfast stop at a Panera location. Great food; extremely fast service. From there, on to the quaint local communities on the east end of Long Island. We had about 45 minutes off the bus to explore the Main streets of each of these towns, and then rode the bus past the beachfront estates of the rich but not necessarily so famous (think investment bankers, not media stars!) A stop at a scenic beach to feel the sand between your toes, then on to a whirlwind tasting at a local Winery. Lunch not included, but an hour was afforded in the final small town to choose an eatery that appealed to you. All the while, the very knowledgeable tour guide enlightened and entertained us with details of what we were seeing, delivered with a delightful German accent. The only downside for us...2 hours was alloted to patronize an outlet mall. We have those much closer to home, and would have preferred that time to have been used exploring more local color. It was our target and we are fully satisfied. However, the tour was mixed with the Italian tour, so all through the day we had listen Italian in the bus. It could be OK if the information given in English and Italian could be identical. We realized that the detail of the information given in English was nothing compared to the detail given in Italian. • Namitasanjay 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Mesmerising tour to Niagara falls We booked a 2 day tour of Niagra falls by Empire Vaccations for the 7th and 8th of September.We gathered at the 42nd Avenue at time square infront of the Port authority station and were received by a wonderful guide Uttar.She was very informative and courteous .The bus tour had multiple stops though the bus had a toilet but they stopped after 2 hrs regularly.Our tour included entry to Watkins Glen State Park where we did a beautiful hike. Then we moved on and stopped at another stop for refreshments.Then we headed for the Niagra falls on the way we crossed the finger lakes the Niagra river and as we approached the falls we could see the rapids upfront.Upon reaching the falls we took a walk upto the falls and saw the horseshoe fall, brides veil fall ,Luna island and the American falls thereafter we checked into Comfort inn at the point which was a part of our itinerary .The hotel rooms were spacious and luxurious.At night we walked down to the falls to see the list up falls and the spectacular fireworks show at pm from the American side .It was just spectacular.Today morning we went to the Observation deck and were spellbound by the beauty of the falls.We took the Maid of Mist boat ride right into the heart of the falls and were awestruck by the beauty of the falls .Then we returned to the bus for our return journey through the New York state giving us the feel of the geography of the place.We loved the tour and recommend it. I was left behind and none even noticed. Also this trip is not made for native New Yorkers who want to just get on guided trip out of the city for the day. It’s geared for travelers from other countries. The tours are listed as “bilingual “ but not much attendance is paid to English speakers at all. There were only 2 native New Yorkers and we needed English. Also it’s ridiculous that there were 3 guides on one trip and none knew I was missing but besides that we were dealing with Spanish, Italian and Japanese translators. That’s just too many languages on one tour. When we went in to places there were a lot of other group tours and the guides walked through super fast and several of us got lost within other tours because no one even looked back to check if whole group was following and also it was confusing with so many guides on our trip because they didn’t stay together. Everything was rushed. Also 1 guide didn’t like air conditioning and wanted to keep the bus hot and didn’t even ask others if cold, only said the Italians were. Day 1: SAN FRANCISCO – BAY CRUISE – GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE – CHINATOWN

Today we understand why San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. We start our tour walking on Lombard Street and then at the Fisherman’s Wharf with a cruise in the world-famous bay, under the Golden Gate Bridge, and around the notorious Alcatraz Island .

Day 4: LAS VEGAS – GRAND CANYON – PAGE

We start the day traveling South East through the desert and through the Navajo Indian reservation before we come to the South Bank of “One of the 7 wonders of the world” the Grand Canyon. Tour along the south bank and learn how throughout the years the Colorado River carved its way down to the sea and created the wonderland for geologists. After lunch, we continue along the canyon east stopping at some of the many Indian market places to browse the handmade arts and crafts.

Day 5: ANTELOPE CANYON – BRYCE CANYON

We tour the lower Antelope Canyon and visit the spectacular dunes created by the wind, water, and sand; words are not enough to describe these formations created by Mother Nature. After our tour, we depart this amazing area and head west to Bryce Canyon home to the most amazing natural sculptures of the world.

Our tour will take us to see amazing rock and sand sculptures honed to perfection over thousands of years of rain wind and sunshine. Experience the unique changing of the colors during the sunset from one of the vista points in the park (may change due to changing sunset times). After the visit, we head towards the town of Kanab. Day 6: ZION PARK – LAS VEGAS – LOS ANGELES

Zion national park.

This park got its name from the Mormons that settled in the area. They gave it this name after claiming that visiting the park is like a religious experience, the majesty of the mountains and silence of the wilderness make you feel like you have been transported to another place. Tour the park and enjoy a short walking trail along the Virgin River that runs through the park, before leaving this amazing area for an early evening arrival in Las Vegas, an option for a late-night return to Los Angeles.

After five years of closure, ‘glamping’ back again in Yosemite National Park

After five years of pandemic- and snowpack-related closures, Yosemite National Park has reopened “glamping” camps where visitors will have access to showers, gourmet meals and a view of the park’s wild backcountry.

Camping hopefuls can now enter a lottery to experience three of the five available camps at the High Sierra Camps from June to September.

The two other sites, Vogelsang and Merced Lake — respectively the highest elevation camp and the oldest and most remote camp, established in 1916 — will remain closed throughout the 2024 season. Neither park officials nor Aramark, the park’s concessioner, could be reached to explain why these two camps remain closed.

According to the camps’ website, more than 13,000 visitors stay at the High Sierra Camps each year, and another thousand backpackers passing through each year stop for food at the campsites.

“Glamping,” a more comfortable or glamorous version of camping, has grown in popularity in the past couple of decades. Visitors have the option of paying $1,403 for a guided tour of the park with a weeklong stay, or paying $172 to $185 per night to reserve a bed.

There’s been controversy among certain environmentalists who take a hard line against any type of development in the pristine wilderness, said Jane Simpson, chair of the leadership training program at the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club. But Simpson said she is glad to hear that the campsites are reopening to the public this year.

“The experience is phenomenal,” said Simpson, recalling her own High Sierra Camp visit in 2015. “The people are very hyper aware of their impact.”

As an avid hiker and backpacker herself, Simpson is used to having to carry all of her own supplies when visiting Yosemite National Park. But the amenities of the High Sierra Camps allow visitors to leave behind tents and cooking necessities, as they have running water and three meals a day prepared by professional chefs.

On the High Sierra Camps’ website, Aramark and the national park service express their commitment to protecting the environment: “We take our role as stewards very seriously and actively work to protect the resources for generations to come.”

Jeff Jenkins, assistant professor of parks and protected areas at UC Merced’s Sierra Nevada Research Institute, said that the National Park Service has to strike a balance between protecting national parks and making them accessible to everyone.

“I remember we saw a woman hiking the route of these High Sierra Camps that was pushing 90,” Jenkins recalled of a time when his family stayed at the High Sierra Camps together. “She was able to get out there too.” First-time, inexperienced campers, the elderly, and families might prefer to stay at the High Sierra Camps because of the amenities.

By having designated areas where semi-permanent shelters are set up, Jenkins said, the “sacrifice zones” allow for a much larger swath of wilderness to remain untouched. “Impact has been constrained to mostly the trail corridor and these areas of the wilderness, these hotspots,” said Jenkins.

The urgency of mitigating human impact on the environment has forced the National Park Service to innovate by adding features like the bear-proof lockers that prevent bears from finding easy food sources near human dwellings, Jenkins noted.

But the debate around these High Sierra Camps isn’t anything new. Dave White, the director of global institute of sustainability and innovation at Arizona State University, describes it as the “fundamental paradox” of the national parks as they balance access and protection.

White said the social and cultural impact of visiting parks also helps to shift the conversation around sustainability and changing personal habits to preserve the environment. For visitors, “it helps them to have greater awareness and understanding about critical environmental issues that we’re facing, including things like climate change,” he said.

The wonder of Yosemite National Park never grows old for White, who has visited several times. “It is some of the most spectacular natural beauty that exists anywhere in the world,” he said. White said it’s the scale of the natural features, and the history of the Indigenous tribes who were violently forced off the lands to make Yosemite, that still humble him today.

“When you’re there, you just feel as a human, you feel insignificant in an important way,” said White.
