Beyond the infamous chikki: 8 Exciting activities to experience in Lonavala

Beyond the infamous chikki: 8 Exciting activities to experience in Lonavala

By Aquib Nawab

25 Jun, 2024

Lonavala is a shining gem among the hill stations of Maharashtra, located in the Sahyadri ranges. Lonavala is quite popular for its Chikki, however this town has much more to offer to the tourists than expected. Lush greenery and pulse-pounding excitement are two things that come to mind when one mentions this place, as it is full of hidden gems waiting to be explored.

Let’s explore the 8 thrilling activities that you must do in Lonavala, based on their drive time from The Hosteller, Lonavala

1. Rajmachi Fort trek, 50 mins

Rajmachi Fort is one of the most important landmarks in the history of Lonavala. The fort was constructed by the Maratha empire in the 17th century, and it consists of two twin forts known as Shrivardhan and Manaranjan. It showcases the strategic military genius of the Marathas and also testifies to their architectural skills.

What to watch out for

The trip up Rajmachi Fort is a thrilling experience, especially if you are an adventure lover. There are two main routes: one from Kondivade village that is more demanding than the easier route commencing from Lonavala. The distance covered in the Rajmachi Fort trek is about 13 km and could take approximately 4-5 hours to complete.

What to expect

Lush green valleys and glistening streams greet you as you ascend, and sometimes you will be enchanted by falls cascading down cliff sides. The fort itself gives a grand view of the Sahyadri Mountains surrounding it, making the trek well worth the effort. Don’t forget to visit Udhewadi village near the fort, which provides an insight into rural Maharashtra.

2. Karla and Bhaja cave exploration

Karla and Bhaja caves are ancient rock-cut Buddhist caves dating back to the 2nd century BCE. These ones’ represent some of the oldest examples within India, proving that Buddhism here has long existed.

Famous structures

The Karla Caves are famous for their grand chaitya griha (prayer hall), one of the largest in India. Within these caves, we can find detailed carvings, large pillars, and aged stupas reflecting excellence in architecture at that time period. Equally interesting but smaller ones would be Bhaja Caves, which have stupas including 22 rock-cut formations, viharas or monasteries, and ornate sculptures.

Why visit this spot?

These caves are a step back in time and allow you to peep into the lives of early Buddhist monks. The calmness of the place, plus its historical relevance, make it important for history enthusiasts as well as people who are looking for spirituality.

3. Lonavala Lake: A fun-filled getaway

Lonavala Lake, also known as Monsoon Lake, is a popular destination for those seeking an exciting day out with family and friends. Lonavala Lake offers a range of activities that cater to all ages and interests.

Things to do

  • Boating: Enjoy a leisurely ride across the lake's calm waters
  • Fishing: Try your luck and catch some fish
  • Bird Watching: Spot exotic bird species and enjoy the sweet melodies of nature
  • Picnicking: Relax on the grassy banks and enjoy a meal with your loved ones

When to visit

The best time to visit Lonavala Lake is during the rainy season (June-September), when the lake is filled to its brim and the surrounding landscape is lush and green. The misty air and gentle raindrops add to the excitement, making it a truly unforgettable experience.

4. Della Adventure park: Thrilling rides

For those who love thrill rides, Della Adventure Park is nothing less than an elixir of excitement. Della Adventure Park covers 36 acres, which makes it India’s largest extreme adventure park, with about fifty thrilling activities all together.

Activity packages

You can do things like bungee jumping, swoop swings, and ATV rides that are full of adrenaline, as well as archery or horseback riding, which require no energy at all. It also boasts of being home to India’s longest flying fox, which allows one to enjoy breathtaking aerial views across the entire park.

5. Astonishing views from Tiger’s Leap and Lion’s Point

Tiger's leap.

Tiger's Leap, also referred to as Tiger’s Point, is a clifftop with a sheer drop of over 650 metres, overlooking the valley beneath. The name came about due to the optical illusion it gives of a tiger jumping into the valley.

Lion’s Point

Near Tiger’s Leap is Lion’s Point, another famous lookout spot that provides all-round views of the surrounding hills and valleys. In particular, during monsoons, several waterfalls are seen in this landscape.

Both points also serve as photography spots where one can have a sunset view or simply enjoy natural scenery. The cool breeze and sounds of falling water make it an unforgettable visit.

6. Visiting Ekvira Devi Temple

Located near Karla Caves, the Ekvira Devi Temple is a popular Hindu shrine devoted to the goddess Ekvira in Maharashtra State. This temple remains important for pilgrimage, especially for Koli community members, who are local fishermen from the Mumbai region.

Architecture

This temple, situated on top of a hill, boasts traditional Indian design and provides breathtaking panoramas around it. Going up to the temple implies climbing steps, along which there are stalls selling offerings and souvenirs.

The Navaratri festival season marks high activity at this temple as many devotees come here for blessings from their deity in large numbers. There is religious fervour and cultural activity all over during that time.

7. Day out at Lonavala Wax Museum

The Lonavala Wax Museum, or Sunil's Celebrity Wax Museum, features life-size wax statues of famous personalities from India and around the world. Modelled after its well-known counterpart, Madame Tussauds, Sunil Kandalloor established this museum as a celebrated wax artist himself.

For both Bollywood celebrities, sports icons, political leaders, and historical figures, the museum offers a wide variety of wax statues. Each figure is detailed to capture the person’s likeness well.

It is a fun and educational place to be. The museum provides an opportunity for visitors of all ages to see close-up, lifelike replicas of their most beloved icons.

8. Swimming at Bhushi dam

Situated on the Indrayani River, Bhushi Dam is quite famous among tourists for its relaxing atmosphere amidst the lush greenery. The overflow of this dam leads to many steps and small cascades forming natural pools that are suitable for swimming.

Visitors can take a refreshing dip in cold water, have picnics, or take memorable photographs here. Local food stalls selling eatables are found all over the vicinity, adding to the overall experience.

The best time to visit

The best time to visit Bhushi Dam is during monsoons, when there is high water flow and surrounding areas are covered with green vegetation. However, caution must be taken, especially during heavy rains, due to strong currents in flowing water.

5 killed in Lonavala waterfall mishap: All five bodies recovered, govt to issue orders banning entry of tourists at certain spots

Police said the spot where the incident took place is a "restricted area" under the jurisdiction of indian railways and the forest department..

lonavala places to visit list

A day after five persons including four children were swept away in a waterfall located in a “restricted area” approximately 2 kilometres from Bhushi Dam in Lonavala, two more bodies were recovered on Monday during a rescue operation.

The bodies have been identified as that of a nine-year-old girl Mariya Akil Sayyad which was located in the morning and four-year-old Adnan Sabhahat Ansari, who was found in the evening, police inspector Suhas Jagtap of Lonavala city police station said.

A team of rural police, INS Shivaji and members of Shivdurga Mitra Mandal had carried out a search operation on Sunday and traced three victims identified as Ameena Salman alias Adil Ansari (13), her sister Umera Salman alias Adil Ansari (8) and a woman Shahista Liyakat Ansari (37).

On Monday, a team of government officials and Pune rural police carried out a survey of various dangerous spots in the region. The government plans to impose restrictions on people entering these locations in Lonavala region during the rainy season to prevent such mishaps in future. A senior police officer said the district collector will issue orders that tourists will not be allowed to visit certain dangerous spots in Lonavala after 6 pm.

Nearly 19 members of the families of Liyakat Ansari and Yunus Khan from Hadapsar in Pune city came to Lonavala for monsoon tourism on Sunday in a private vehicle. They included a couple that got married recently on June 22.

Festive offer

They had gone to the waterfall located in the interiors behind Bhushi Dam in Lonavala. Police suspect that the flow of water was less at first. However, due to heavy rain, the waterfall gathered momentum due to which ten tourists playing at the spot were swept away around 3 pm on Sunday.

Police said five of them had been rescued, but the other five were swept away into the reservoir connecting the dam water.

Police said the spot where the incident took place is a “restricted area” under the jurisdiction of Indian Railways and the Forest Department.

As per the directions of the District Collector, a meeting was held with officials from Railways, Forest Department, the Pune rural police, Lonavala Municipal Council and other government departments concerned on Monday.

“The place where the incident took place is about two kilometres behind the Bhushi dam. There are boards installed in the area so that people to know it is restricted for tourists. We have identified certain dangerous spots in Lonavala. Restrictions will be in place at these spots as per prohibitory orders of the district collector. We appeal to people to be cautious while visiting and follow the restrictions laid down by the government,” said Satya Sai Karthik, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Lonavala.

Former corporator Farooq Inamdar from Hadapsar area said, “The victims are relatives of each other. The woman who died in the incident worked as a domestic help. Parents of the children who lost their lives are into a small business of selling bakery items… Of the 19 persons who went to Lonavala, one hails from Uttar Pradesh and others have been residing in Hadapsar area for several years. I came to know that the couple from Sayyad Nagar that got married on June 22 also went for the trip and got injured in the incident, but their condition is stable.”
