The slow slog to March is one that feels momentous. Schools are in session so its prime for an adults-only escape, and the change of season means great deals are there for the taking. But where to go on holiday in March? For more inspiration, see our picks for the best places to visit in March.

Chamonix France

1. Chamonix, France

Temperature in March: 6°C high; 1°C low Season: winter Travel time from UK: 1 hour 40 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

Set on a mountainside below Mont Blanc, the ski resort town of Chamonix has bags of storybook appeal: churches sparkle under a frosting of snow, the windows of picturesque chalets glow with firelight, and shimmering pine trees look as if they've been plucked straight off a Christmas card. By March, the serious skiers have left to find cooler climes, and the weather is warm enough for lunching al fresco. You can still catch the last of the winter snow and accommodation is easier to find, whether you're after a romantic Airbnb for two or a cool new ski hotel for a post-piste party.

Where to stay: Retro Americana RockyPop is a great affordable option with fun communal areas (think table football, table tennis, games consoles, live music) and an excellent in-house ski rental shop. If you prefer an Airbnb, check into Studio Grace , a self-contained apartment that's connected to a larger chalet, but with its own private outdoor terrace.

Madrid Spain

2. Madrid, Spain

Temperature in March: 16°C high; 6°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 25 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

Barcelona 's big sister sheds her winter skin in March. When the clocks go forward, as if by magic a wave of warmth sweeps the city and loosens up its reserved exterior. Madrid 's expansive parks burst into bloom and locals tumble out onto the streets to sip caipirinhas and dance till dawn. Temperatures stay around 20ºC (far more gentle than the capital's sizzling summers), meaning you can explore its world-class galleries, belle-époque mansions and designer boutiques without breaking a sweat. There are great traditional tapas to be had, but leave time to try the city's newer breed of stylish gastro bars. Just don't plan anything more than a siesta afterwards.

Where to stay: Family-owned 7 Islas – half hotel, half gallery with polished concrete floors and whitewashed walls. If you're after a view, reserve a room at The Principal Madrid Hotel , where the rooftop terrace overlooks the angel-topped dome of the city’s famous Metrópolis building. If you're travelling with a group, this airy Airbnb apartment sleeps six and is within walking distance of Madrid's top attractions. For more options, check our Madrid hotels roundup. CS

3. Rome, Italy

Temperature in March: 17° high; 6° low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

It’s the ultimate European city break for history buffs, foodies, and all-round Italophiles. However, if you’re yet to tick off the ancient metropolis’s major attractions , avoid the peak summer months. The sprawling Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain, and much of the Colosseum offer little to no respite from the sun, so breezy spring days are best. There’s so much to see that it’s easier to admit you’ll be back again before you know it – plan days accordingly to take everything in. Otherwise, get lost. Church-hop, roam around leafy parks as the flowerbeds bloom, and fuel the smartwatch-buzzing on-the-go from Rome’s best pizza spots. Just be careful with timings; if Easter falls in March, as it does in 2024, it’ll affect what’s open – and what’s really, really busy.

Where to stay: Cardo Roma , an Autograph Collection Hotel, opens in early 2024. It’s outside the city centre, so transport is needed, but the wellness and leisure facilities, plus the sleek, modern design, will have travellers checking into the 324 guestrooms and suites. For something a little closer to the action, join the fashion-conscious clientele at Palm Suites , a stone’s throw from the chaos of the Colosseum. CS

4. Lisbon, Portugal

Temperature in March: 18° high; 10° low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 45 minutes Time difference: GMT

Alongside the usual selection of holiday treats and trinkets, it’s common to return from Lisbon with sore glutes – the Portuguese capital is known as The City of Seven Hills for good reason. Tackling the top sights during scorching summers is a sweaty affair, but in March, things are warming up just enough for it to be one of the most pleasant European city breaks. Marvel at the glitzy interiors of the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, light a candle in The Cathedral of Saint Mary Major, and roam the Botanical Garden of Lisbon before finding a roadside spot for lunch. In the evening, don a light jacket and discover the city’s nightlife scene via a bar crawl down Rua Nova do Carvalho (Pink Street) or secure a spot at Red Frog, the only Lisbon bar to make the World’s 100 Best Bars list. Also, UK travellers have no time difference, so it’s a great place to try the digital nomad lifestyle.

Where to stay: 1908 Lisboa Hotel is centrally located and affordable, making it the perfect stay for first-timers likely to spend little time lounging around in fancy lobbies. Alternatively, the Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon is one of the best hotels in Lisbon for aesthetes and all-round fans of glamorous stays – dinner at Michelin-starred chef Pedro Pena Bastos’s CURA is a must.

Connemara Co Galway Ireland

Temperature in March :12°C high; 8°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 1 hour 5 minutes Time difference: GMT +0

Ireland is one of those rare places that fully lives up to its reputation: incredibly green, windswept, raucous, and – more often than not – pelted by rain. What better time to visit than during the month that features an ode to St Patrick, the 'Apostle of Ireland'? Donegal ’s wild beaches and the looming Cliffs of Moher are movie-beautiful, and the elemental, towering sea crag of Kerry’s Skellig Michael was picked for a pivotal role in Star Wars . There’s nowhere cosier for a pint than the brightly painted pubs of Galway (wood-panelled Tigh Neachtain’s is a favourite), best paired with the riverside city’s famous oysters. In Dublin , the cobbled, Georgian capital, the docklands have lately gone from run-down to tech hub: the so-called Silicon Docks are now home to Facebook, Google and Airbnb HQs. The rooftop bar at the area’s Marker Hotel is where young Dublin comes for après-coding.

Where to stay: At part 13th-century castle, part French-inspired château Ashford Castle in County Mayo, one of our picks for the best hotels in Ireland .

Finca Malvasia

6. Canary Islands, Spain

Temperature in March: 21°C high; 15°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 4 hours 6 minutes Time difference: GMT +0

Spain's tiny golden islands off the coast of North Africa are heavenly in early spring. The days are getting longer and sunnier and there's no sign of the peak-season crowds. We're excited by Lanzarote 's beautiful beaches, cool surf scene and amazing places to stay. We're captivated by Tenerife 's unexpected lunar landscapes and intrigued by the unsung Canaries: a whistle-stop tour could take you through Santa Cruz de la Palma's whitewashed Renaissance palaces, La Gomera's plunging ravines and Fuencaliente's sleepy volcanic craters bathed in early morning mist. To help plan your trip, see our guide to the best Canary Islands to visit .

Where to stay: For an unusual stay, book still-functioning 18th-century lighthouse Faro Punta Cumplida on the rugged north-east of La Palma . Ditching the all-inclusives and going small and local is better for the community, the environment and your holiday, too. Try the cottages on family-owned working vineyard Finca Malvasia in Lanzarote; or Tenerife’s gorgeous Garachico, a mercifully under-visited seaside village.

Zebras at Sanbona Little Karoo

7. South Africa

Temperature in March: 27°C high; 21°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 10 hours 45 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

For a high-octane safari adventure look to the tip of this mighty continent. South Africa has 19 national parks and the tail-end of wet season means fewer tour groups and lower costs if you can tolerate the odd afternoon shower. If you're hungry to see the big five, head to Kruger National Park in the north-east, while those yearning for Out of Africa -style romance should travel south to the lush Garden Route to track game on horseback. Or if you don't want to stray too far from the city, Little Karoo is the closest safari to Cape Town . When you're done, dust off at one of Cape Town's smartest hotels : the southern capital is at its best in March, mostly free of visitors and basking in the sun.

Where to stay: One of our favourite hotels in Africa is Grootbos Private Nature Reserve , a private and carbon-negative reserve just south of Cape Town. The lodges here are glassy and contemporary, while most of the food is grown on the 2,500-hectare site.

Muttrah Corniche Muscat Oman

Temperature in March: 29°C high; 23°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 7 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT +3

Natural and understated, Oman couldn’t be more different to its neighbour on the Arabian Peninsula, the UAE. Where the latter has built a playground of space-age skyscrapers and bling-bling beach clubs, Oman has the pristine, dolphin-filled fjords of the Musandam Peninsula, Wadi Shab’s emerald waterfalls and Salalah’s misty greenery – a quirky anomaly in a region known for barren ruggedness (thank the Khareef, Salalah’s very own monsoon). Even Oman’s port capital Muscat keeps it classy with a backdrop of craggy brown mountains and the majestic, sandstone Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Not that Oman can’t do luxury – it’s just of a more low-key sort. See the Omani-style villas of ultra-secluded Six Senses Zighy Bay (where guests can paraglide into the hotel), or Anantara’s canyon-edge village in the remote Hajar Mountains. The perfect time to discover the Middle East’s unsung jewel? March falls neatly between the winter rush and stifling summer heat.

Where to stay: Our top picks include Six Senses Zighy Bay , Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort and The Chedi in Muscat . See more at our where to stay in Oman guide.

9. Southeast Sicily, Italy

Temperature in March:  18°C high; 9°C low Season:  Spring Travel time from UK:  3 hours Time difference: GMT +1

If you’re seeking the warmest place in Italy in March, look to southeast Sicily . This eternally awe-inspiring island has Europe’s sunniest city in modern Catania and Europe’s hottest spot in ancient Syracuse. While there’s little chance of a heatwave in March, you’ll still get eight hours of sunshine a day, and the temperate Mediterranean spring climate is ideal for exploring the area’s baroque cities – Modica, Ragusa, Noto – and Greek and Roman remains. On warmer days, the dunes and lagoons of Vendicari Nature Reserve harbour some of the best (and quietest) beaches in all of Italy , along with a great diversity of birdlife returning from Africa in springtime.

Where to stay: In Ortigia, Hotel Gutowski is artful, welcoming and extraordinarily good value (doubles from £73). On the slopes of Etna outside Catania, shell-pink Monaci delle Terre Nere must be one of the most heart-stirringly romantic places to stay in Sicily. For stays by the Vendicari nature reserve, try thethinkingtraveller.com .

Delhi India

10. Delhi, India

Temperature: 30°C high; 16°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 9 hours 20 minutes Time difference: GMT +4.30

Holi, the festival of colours, might now attract as many Hackney Instagrammers as devout Hindus, but the spring celebrations are, of course, at their best and brightest in India . Come March, the country’s capital erupts in a riot of rainbow powder, as Holi parties across the city pop with DJs, street food and clothes-ruining antics. After several showers, be sure to explore the city’s dichotomies: grand temples and dusty bazaars in Old Delhi , followed by New Delhi’s colonial pomp and G&Ts. For a taste of modern India, Hauz Khas Village (‘HKV’ to trendy young Delhiites) is a pedestrian-friendly hub of galleries, fashion boutiques, bars and bohemian cafés.

Where to stay: Modern-day, opulent hangout The Leela Palace is made of white marble, with soaring ceilings and a rooftop pool.

Costa Del Sol Malaga Spain

11. Malaga, Spain

Temperature in March:  19°C high; 9°C low Season:  Spring Travel time from UK:  2 hours 45 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

By March, Malaga is already sunny and warm enough for T-shirts and beach games, if not exactly scorchio quite yet. This pocket-sized city on Spain ’s Sunshine Coast has had something of a renaissance of late; no longer just a hop-off point for Marbella and other beach resorts, it’s worth a trip in its own right. Not least for its youthful and exuberant food and creative scenes: buzzy, affordable restaurants run by rising stars are packed with locals year-round, Antonio Banderas has revived the Teatro del Soho, the Lego-like Centre Pompidou sits on the newly redeveloped port. Meanwhile, the Old Town has interesting galleries and artisan boutiques to be found on its squares and sidestreets, as well as a museum dedicated to Malaga’s most famous son, Picasso. Then, of course, there are the beaches, stretching out either side of the town, with beach bars serving up sundowners and seafood, day and night.

Where to stay: The recently opened La Zambra hotel is a clean contemporary take on Andalucia located in the Mijas Costa area. Mijas Golf is nearby if that's your thing, but it's also worth a stay just for the Moorish patio, pool and spa offering as well.

Whistler Canada

12. Whistler, Canada

Temperature in March:  7°C high; –2°C low Season:  Ski season; spring Travel time from UK:  9 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT –8

The granddaddy of North American ski resorts does winter sports on a supersized scale. Up in the awe-inspiring Pacific Ranges above Vancouver, Whistler gets phenomenal snow in a winter season that runs November–May. The best month of all is March when you can expect bluebird powder days; it’s sunnier yet there’s still heavy snowfall, slopes and lifts are less busy, and rates are cheaper. In a resort that has committed to becoming carbon-neutral (including building a hydro plant to produce enough energy to power ski lifts, restaurants and snow cannons), there are a whole bunch of restaurants run with a sustainability ethos. Fine-dining Alta Bistro is perhaps the smartest of them, and the greenest: as well as all-seasonal, all-local ingredients, everything is ethically sourced, bought from nearby farms and makers, right down to the sustainably farmed wine. Plus, all organic waste gets composted at a local farm and they use renewable hydroelectric power.

Where to stay: Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler is the starriest hotel in town. Alternatively, and for the accomplished skier, Mabeyski arranges amazing off-the-beaten-piste winter adventures in British Columbia, including heliskiing and stays at spoiling lodges.

Aerial view of Stingray City sandbar Grand Cayman

13. Cayman Islands

Temperature in March:  29°C high; 22°C low Season:  Dry Travel time from UK:  12 hours 45 minutes direct Time difference: GMT -5

At last, there’s a compelling reason to choose this archipelago over other Caribbean islands . Palm Heights is the Caymans’ first smart all-suite boutique hotel, and something entirely different for the Caribbean. Design is 1970s retro-Tropicana – bold in orange, tan and sunshine yellow, with an eclectic mix of vintage classic furniture and contemporary art. There’s a huge wellness centre with visiting athletes, superb restaurants headed up by New York chefs, and a diverse crowd of islanders as well as guests. The location is one of the best in the Caribbean, on icing-sugar Seven Mile Beach. March is the best month to go to the Cayman Islands – for weather, for watersports, and lower rates and fewer tourists between school holidays.

Where to stay: Take any of the 50 suites at Palm Heights – all are spacious, with separate living rooms, tiled breakfast/cocktail bars, and balconies overlooking the sea.

View of the cityscape of Essaouira in Morocco

14. Essaouira, Morocco

Temperature in March:  20°C high; 14°C low Season:  Spring Travel time from UK:  3 hours 40 minutes (direct) Time difference: GMT +1

A couple of hours’ drive to the coast from Marrakech brings you to the cute seaside town of Essaouira , painted every shade of blue. Its Atlantic breakers and wide sandy stretches lure surfers and its bohemian vibe bring hippies. Plus, now its collection of cool galleries, boutiques and chic little places to stay and eat makes it a destination in its own right, whether for an early spring beach break or a Moroccan escape a little off the well-worn path.

Where to stay: On the edge of the Medina, Villa Maroc is a charming riad made up of four 18th-century houses, with 21 uniquely decorated rooms and suites (including a couple of two-bedroom family suites).

Ravello Amalfi Coast Sorrento

15. Sorrento, Italy

Temperature in March: 19°C high; 13°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 35 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

Nothing brings a spring to the step quite like the sight of Italy ’s glorious Amalfi coast . Particularly in March, when its vertiginous twists are bathed in a daily average eight hours of sun. Cliffs plunge into the Tyrrhenian Sea, topped with grand palazzos and smart hotels. Narrow, Roman lanes are stuffed with limoncello stalls flogging the boozy spoils of Sorrento ’s famous fruit. Its snoozy air and pastel-coloured houses are pure Italian cinema: you might even swear you’ve seen a young Sophia Loren looking impossibly saucy by the quay. Do as the Italians do and spend the lazy, romantic days enjoying a long aperitivo . Don’t miss fresh fritto misto at Marina Grande, the town’s old fishing harbour, or Michelin-starred Il Buco in the cellars of an old monastery, where chef Peppe Aversa serves seasonal ingredients under a stone-hewn, vaulted ceiling. The sweet life, indeed.

Where to stay: Maison la Minervetta is a five-storey, upside-down hotel built into the cliff-side above Sorrento's pretty Marina Grande. For more options nearby, see our edit of the best Amalfi Coast hotels .

Las Vegas USA

16. Las Vegas, USA

Temperature in March: 22°C high; 4°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 10 hours 45 minutes Time difference: GMT -8

Sin City isn’t subtle. But you might call it an interesting anthropological study. What happens when you build an entire city dedicated to hedonism? Everyone goes nuts. Look no further than the Strip, where even early mornings see punters stumbling giddily past a dancing fountain and lava-spewing volcano, toting half-yards of booze. But when not ogling the spectacle, the city’s chequered history makes for fascinating discoveries. The Mob Museum, in the old courthouse, is a thorough chronicling of the mafia here, while the Neon Museum shows off retro, rescued signs from the earliest hotels and casinos. The slightly seedy Atomic Liquors bar also claims a place in Vegas lore: from its rooftop, drinkers would watch mushroom clouds billow out of nearby atomic testing sites in the 1950s. March weather in Las Vegas is like a good UK summer day. But a day in Vegas is like nowhere else on Earth.

Where to stay: At Resorts World Las Vegas , the first new resort to be built on the Las Vegas Strip in more than a decade. The super-sized spot comprises three distinct hotels as well as the Awana Spa and a bevvy of restaurants – the most notable being Wally's with its headline worthy $1000 steaks.

Jordan

Temperature in March: 24°C high; 13°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: from 2 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT +2

As well as being regarded as the Middle East’s most accessible country , Jordan just might be its most captivating. But then, it has many an unfair advantage. There’s the ancient, stone-carved city of Petra, a new wonder of the world; Jerash’s vast Greco-Roman ruins; the super-salty Dead Sea. Or joining a camel caravan to Wadi Rum, star of Lawrence of Arabia : a cinematic, rust-red desert valley dressed up with dramatic sandstone mountains and deep caverns. March is an excellent time to bound around. Daytime temperatures hang in the comfortable half of the 20s, while desert nights are warm enough for camping under the stars.

Where to stay: Four Seasons Hotel Amman , where a serene atmosphere is maintained by cool, calm neutrals and impeccable service.

Nepal

Temperature in March: 24°C high; 8°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 12 hours 5 minutes Time difference: GMT +4.45

There’s no better time than spring to experience Nepal’s Himalayan charms. Flowers are blooming in the high mountains, dry and clear weather shows off generous views, and the days are warm but not sticky. It’s ideal for trekkers, although you needn’t summit Everest for elevated adventure: the Annapurna range offers excellent hikes through lowland villages and around high, glacial lakes. In Kathmandu, March’s Holi festival paints the town red, blue, yellow, purple and green, too. Exploitation of porters is a huge problem in Nepal, so be sure to book with a reputable tour company that enforces weight restrictions, and provides porters with terrain- and weather-appropriate gear and shelter, and fair pay. And we all saw those crazy pictures of the queues to summit Everest, so consider an off-the-beaten-track trekking route for a unique and more peaceful and sustainable experience.

Where to stay: Dwarika's Hotel in Kathmandu has become the stuff of legend – or stay at younger sister Dwarika's Resort , a spa on the ancient trade route to Tibet.

Valencia Spain

19. Valencia, Spain

Temperature in March: 19°C high; 7°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 25 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

Spain ’s third largest city celebrates spring in typically fiery Spanish style. Which is to say, it sets everything on fire. March’s week-long Las Fallas festival sees Valencia display a host of giant, satirical papier-mâché sculptures (often nodding to topical political scandals and celebrity meltdowns), before they’re paraded around town and spectacularly set ablaze on the final night. In the lead-up, the whole city’s a party: parades, music, ear-busting fireworks, plus the hipster Ruzafa district puts on its own dazzling festival of lights. Better still, this appealing cosmopolitan port city isn’t short of spectacles by day. Alongside almost 3km of beaches and a vibrant old town, there’s the awesome futuristic architecture of the City of Arts and Sciences, where buildings evoke the skeleton of a whale, a water lily, a giant eye and more. For more ideas, see our recommendations for things to do in Valencia .

Where to stay: El 16 Ruzafa has five apartments in an early-20th-century modernist building.

Puerto Rico

20. Puerto Rico

Temperature: 22°C high; 16°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 8 hours 58 minutes Time difference: GMT -5

Kick off the month with a beach party on the shores of Puerto Rico . Only two hours from Miami , this Caribbean isle has long been the USA 's weekend playground. Expect a distinctly Latin flavour with a side of home comforts – Puerto Rico has the biggest shopping mall in the Caribbean and the largest virgin tropical rainforest. March is the best month to sample both sides of island life. The beaches lose their crowds and a light breeze rustles the palm trees, lifting the humidity and letting you sleep on the sand in Vieques. Those craving a faster pace can always go salsa dancing in Mayagüez, whale-watching in Rincón or wander the cobbled streets of old San Juan, Piña Colada in hand.

Where to stay: Close to Vieques’s beautiful beaches, Puerto Rican-owned Finca Victoria is a sustainably minded boutique hotel offering yoga, farm-sourced breakfasts and organic locally made bath goodies. For a villa stay, try The Horned Dorset Primavera featuring Moorish interiors and a French-influenced restaurant.

Sayulita West Coast of Mexico

21. Mexico's West Coast

Temperature in March: 30°C high; 22°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 12 hours 15 minutes Time difference: GMT -6

Mexico 's Pacific coast transplants Californian cool to a warmer climate with bigger waves – no wonder Hollywood heavyweights jet down to graze by the pool in Cabo . March is a fantastic time to visit, with prime conditions for whale-watching in Baja California , virtually no rain and rising temperatures. Chilled-out Sayulita draws travellers with its neon-bright shopfronts and wild beaches. Further south in Oaxaca , you'll find Puerto Escondido, a beach town where you can surf all day, party all night and browse contemporary art installations the morning after. If you fancy branching out during your stay, click here to see the hottest day-trips from Sayulita.

Where to stay: Check in to Cabo's One&Only Palmilla to star-spot over ceviche or head further north to Baja California Sur’s Todos Santos, where Paradero Todos Santos is a palm-tree oasis with an outdoor spa and half moon-shaped infinity pool.

Bermuda

22. Bermuda

Temperature in March: 21°C high; 16°C low Season: winter Travel time from UK: 7 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT -4

Castaways in the 17th century were the first to see the startling beauty of this undiscovered island. Bermuda hasn't changed much since then with its pristine rose-pink sands and fiercely loyal locals who have a disdain for flashy resorts. Visit in March before the late spring price spike for warm waters and seven hours of daily sunshine. Watching a rosy sunset from the docks of the capital Hamilton, you'll feel as if you've accidentally stumbled on paradise.

Where to stay: At the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club , which has sat on the harbour of Bermuda’s capital since the late 19th century.

The High Atlas Mountains

23. Fez, Morocco

Temperature in March: 21°C high; 8°C low Season: winter Travel time from UK: 3 hours 10 minutes Time difference: GMT +0

Bigger than Marrakech , the imperial Moroccan city of Fez also comes first for authentic charm. Its eighth-century medina is a chaotic trip back in time to fragrant tanneries and wizened merchants; an extraordinary restoration project has lately breathed new life into old buildings. Less of a tourist circus than its medieval rival, Fez is nevertheless catching up in the sophistication stakes. Exciting chefs are also bringing modernity to the medina: El Bulli , Noma and French Laundry alum Najat Kaanache applies haute techniques to local-market finds at her intimate new restaurant Nur .

Where to stay: Parisian designer Christophe Pillet’s 50-bedroom, stone-clad Sahrai hotel has a covetable rooftop bar and Givenchy spa, while Dar Arsama riad is a chic blend of contemporary and traditional, hung with the curious art of Spanish owner Violeta Caldrés.

Boats In Ha Long Bay Vietnam

24. Vietnam

Temperature in March: 23°C high; 18°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 11 hours 15 minutes Time difference: GMT +6

There's no better time to scale the length and breadth of this compelling country. Vietnam 's usually sticky humidity vanishes in March and dazzling sunshine heralds the driest month of the year. It's the ideal time to laze on the southern beaches but also optimum weather for trekking the craggy northern mountains. It's also still shoulder season, meaning you can see much more for less. Admire Ho Chi Minh 's French colonial architecture from a buzzing sky bar, explore Hanoi 's ancient pagodas, sail on the tranquil Mekong and take a rickety bike ride over the bridges of Hoi An in the gorgeous central region. Just up the coast is the Khoai Chau district, where the Chu Dong Tu festival takes place in March with processions of richly embroidered golden dragons and burning incense. It's a feast for the senses that won't be forgotten in a hurry.

Where to stay: We like Four Seasons The Nam Hai just outside pretty Hoi An, which has three-tiered swimming pools and bedrooms set in sleek villas. For a beach-side stay, Regent Phu Quoc is a luxury gem with all the trimmings for an idyllic long-haul fly-and-flop.

alley of memoriesin shinjuku tokyo

Temperature in March: 14°C high; 5°C low in Tokyo; -1°C high; -11°C low in Niseko Season: winter Travel time from UK: 14 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT +8

March is a wonderful time to visit Japan. You might just miss peak cherry blossom season – it's more likely to fall at the very end of March into early April. But really, exactly when the cherry blossom will bloom is unpredictable, and growing ever more so. And skiing is possible in some parts of Japan throughout the month – we like Niseko, “the smartest area on Japan’s northernmost island, where the fluffy powder is the stuff of legends,” features director Toby Skinner says in our round-up of where to ski in March .

Where to stay: The Green Leaf is a classic ski-in, ski-out option. Kimamaya Boutique Hotel , meanwhile, is a small hangout with a glass-walled restaurant.

Red tuktuk under the palm trees on the country road

26. Sri Lanka

Temperature in March: 28°C high; 24°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 10 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT +4.5

The teardrop island has grown stronger than ever in the past few years, and is officially back as a top choice destination for those craving tropical landscapes and serious sunshine. Hang out on the beach or go on adventures across national parks such as Yala National Park (where you might see leopards, elephants and crocodiles) and ancient ruins. You could spend days learning to surf, practising yoga or simply snacking your way through the country's culinary highlights – the choice is yours.

Where to stay: The best Sri Lanka hotels include Wild Coast Tented Lodge , in Yala, and Nine Skies , in the Hill Country.

The Maldives

27. The Maldives

Temperature in March: 30°C high; 27°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: from 10 hours Time difference: GMT +4

Night-snorkelling, island-hopping and the turquoise Indian Ocean lapping onto ice-white shores… when it comes to the Maldives the travel clichés flow as freely as the cocktails. While the island nation is idyllic year-round, March is a great time to spot manta rays and sharks or simply relish the temperate 30ºC days in a private beach hut. It's dreamy for the kids too – see our pick of the best family hotels in the Maldives . One of our favourites is Soneva Fushi with its technology-free zone called The Den, complete with tunnels, treasure maps and a pirate ship built for would-be Peter Pans and Wendys. A note: luxury retreats don’t tend to be the most sustainable of businesses, and even less so in the Maldives, where fresh water and waste management will always be challenges, and private flights and imported food are the norm. But some spots are giving it a go: Kudadoo Private Island runs entirely on solar power; Kuramathi Island Resort produces 70 per cent of its own herbs and salads in an onsite hydroponic garden; and Soneva Fushi is carbon-neutral and 90 per cent waste-free, with onsite plastic and glass recycling and composting.

Where to stay: Our top recommendations include Soneva Fushi , Kudadoo Private Island , Gili Lankanfushi. For a new address, Alila Kothaifaru Maldives is the archipelago's most recent opening, featuring just 80 villas, split between over water (sunrise or sunset) and beach (properly hidden from each other by leafy vegetation) are supported by two restaurants. For more options, read our guide to the best hotels in the Maldives .

The Philippines

28. The Philippines

Temperature in March: 34°C high; 21°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 14 hours 7 minutes Time difference: GMT +7

This emerald archipelago is the perfect spot for unwinding after a long winter. A thatch-roofed villa in a private island resort is the ideal base from which to discover the winding rice terraces, quaint villages, coral reefs and deserted islands of the Philippines . In March the heat is more bearable on the beaches and in the bustling capital Manila . But those itching to get their feet wet should head to the Palawan islands - the real inspiration for Alex Garland's The Beach . Take a dip in a natural lagoon, or doze under the tilting coconut trees.

Where to stay: Harana Surf in Siargao draws a surfer-yogi crowd, or for something smarter try Nay Palad Hideaway , which has a swimming pontoon off the beach.

The Best Places to Travel in March

By Caitlin Morton and Matt Ortile

Okavango Delta Botswana

You're reading this because you're likely deep in internet research, trying to determine the best places to travel in March. It's that awkward month between winter and spring, when it can get surprisingly hot and still unseasonably cold at the flip of a switch. Whenever leaving the house, it's a toss up—is this puffer weather, or the time to switch to sandals ?

Flee the indecisive climate and get thee to somewhere that's properly hot. Or properly cold. Though the notorious spring breakers tend to command all the attention at airports and train stations this month, there's so much more to traveling in March than sipping margaritas with a herd of Gen Zers (sorry, Gen Z). As spring looms in the northern hemisphere, some destinations begin to emerge from winter hibernation with blooming flowers . Meanwhile, buzzy spots in South America and Asia offer a blessed lack of the humidity (and crowds) you might experience in the busier summer months (did someone say shoulder season?).

Whether you’re looking to warm up with a tropical beach vacation or want to cling to the last days of winter with a ski trip, this is the month to do it. Here are nine of the best places to travel in March, from Big Sky in Montana to the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

Panama is a great place to visit any time of year, thanks to its biodiverse jungles, sprawling beaches, and relative lack of crowds compared to neighboring Costa Rica. But March is an especially great time to experience that outdoor splendor, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s and lots of sunshine (the rainy season kicks off in April). The Caribbean-facing province of Bocas del Toro is a one-stop shop for both gorgeous beaches and active wildlife. For a truly memorable experience, take a nighttime snorkeling trip through bioluminescent waters with Hello Travel Panama .

A straight shot south from Bocas del Toro, the Pacific Ocean-facing province Chiriquí offers an equally beautiful, but wholly different slice of nature. Here you can hike through cloud forests, swim beneath roaring waterfalls, and witness the panoramic sunrise from the summit of Volcán Barú. Check in at the 10-room boutique hotel  Finca El Oasis right on the edge of the volcano, or venture a bit off the Pacific Gulf to the remote, luxurious 400-acre resort of  Isla Palenque . And make sure to allow time for Panama City, where a revived historic center thrives—no wonder we recently named it one of the Best Places to Go in Central and South America in 2024 .

Cartagena Colombia

Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena is one of the best places to travel in March, thanks to weather primed for both city exploration and beach relaxation. Temperatures stick around the high 70s and low 80s without too much humidity, and ocean breezes make for cool and comfortable evenings. Visit the UNESCO-listed Old Town, complete with cobbled streets and colonial-era architecture, as well as the high-rise-heavy neighborhood of Bocagrande and street-art haven of  Getsemaní .

While there are several city beaches to enjoy, it’s worth taking a quick drive outside city limits to see some truly pristine stretches of sand. Take a 1.5-hour bus ride to Isla Barú, where you can swim in the cerulean waters at Playa Blanca and sample plates of ceviche at local restaurants. You can also take a boat ride to the Rosario Islands, a coral archipelago about one hour southwest of the city, to experience some of the region’s best snorkeling. Back in town, rest up at Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards darling Sofitel Legend Santa Clara , located right at the northern edge of Cartagena’s historic district.

Northern Rivers, Australia

This northeastern corner of New South Wales was ravaged by massive floods in 2022, but after recovery efforts in 2023 partially boosted by tourism, the area excitedly began welcoming visitors again this year. That, paired with its reputation for coastal resort towns, scenic seaside drives, gorgeous Pacific beaches, and adventuresome hikes and treks, earned it a spot on our list of Best Places to Go in 2024 .

March will be an especially fun time to visit the land Down Under: Since it's the southern hemisphere, the weather will just be cooling off from summer—ideal if you prefer more temperate climes. The wave-lashed town of Byron Bay will be hosting the 2024 Australian Pro Adaptive Surfing Championship , the country’s first international event for surfers with disabilities, which should make for some exciting energy along the coast.

Locals and visitors alike will be spoiled with a bevy of openings in Northern Rivers: Copperstone by the Range Estates will open its equestrian-style ranch in Bangalow in early 2024 (their properties Swell Hotel and the California-style Sun Ranch in Byron Bay are both epitomes of Aussie style and chill), while in Yamba on the southern fringe of Northern Rivers, the designer and stylist Sheree Commerford will open a breezy seaside inn called Il Delfino in early 2024.

Ilulissat Greenland

Ilulissat, Greenland

Greenland  is icy, mysterious, and one of the most naturally beautiful places on the planet. And while the concept of the summertime midnight sun is appealing, there are many advantages to skirting the June to September crowds in favor of a late-winter sojourn. The coastal town of Ilulissat is particularly appealing in March, when there are less tourists, lower hotel prices, and a lack of mosquitoes and other pesky bugs (a major problem in the summer months). The town also happens to shine most beautifully at this time, with a thick layer of snow shrouding the region in a peaceful silence.

You can reach Ilulissat via an Air Greenland flight from either Copenhagen or Reykjavik. The Ilulissat Icefjord (one of the northernmost UNESCO World Heritage Sites) can be seen from your plane window, but you’ll want to get an even closer look at the massive collection of icebergs. AirZafari offers small-plane flights in Ilulissat, while you can find helicopter tours through Air Greenland . If you book a stay at Hotel Arctic , you can also book boat and helicopter tours (along with dog sled rides, walking tours through town, and more) directly through the concierge.

Montage Big Sky Montana

Big Sky, Montana

If you think ski season is over by the time March rolls around, think again: Montana’s Big Sky Resort doesn’t close its slopes until late April, meaning you can still enjoy prime conditions during this month. Big Sky features an incredible 5,850 acres of skiable terrain, with sizable portions dedicated to both beginner and expert runs (keep an eye out for the brand-new Lone Peak Tram opening this winter.) It’s easily one of the best ski destinations in the country, but the region offers so much more than rides down the slopes. Yellowstone National Park is just an hour away, for example, and the park’s geothermal pools look even more brilliant set against a backdrop of snow.

You could also have your fill of skiing at Montage Big Sky , an alpine resort that offers ski-in, ski-out access to Big Sky Resort. On top of that, the property also provides guests with opportunities for snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, hiking, and fly-fishing—not to mention some seriously luxurious interiors. Cozy up by the lobby fireplace or snuggle in the fur throw at the foot of your bed, then treat yourself to a massage or grab a craft cocktail at the après-ski bar. Consider these just some of the reasons Big Sky is one of the Best Places to Go in North America this year.

Best Islands in the World Raja Ampat Islands Indonesia

Raja Ampat, Indonesia

It takes a bit of effort to reach the Raja Ampat Islands —flying first to  Jakarta , then to Sorong, where most travelers hop on a liveaboard. But once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by lush jungles, blue channels, and biodiverse reefs. The archipelago is truly a scuba diver’s dream, where an average dive gets you up close to manta rays, hawksbill turtles, and around 1,300 species of colorful coral-dwelling fish. There’s really no bad time to visit, but March typically yields the best diving weather (think less rain and calmer waters).

The most popular way to explore Raja Ampat is by booking a small cruise or yacht, and you have several great options to choose from. You could try Aqua Expeditions and set sail on the long-range cruising yacht, Aqua Blu , which offers seven-night, island-hopping itineraries . The boat has 15 sea-facing suites and a spa, and guests can partake in activities like snorkeling, kayaking, diving to manta ray cleaning stations, and searching for elusive bird of paradise species on guided hikes.

Southeast Asia's Lion City is aptly named because it's facing the new year with a great big roar. There's always lots to do in Singapore, especially in the year ahead (the cosmopolitan city-state is on our list of Best Places to Go in Asia in 2024 ), but there's something happening in March that's whipping the island into a tizzy: The pop princess Taylor Swift is bringing her Eras Tour to the Singapore National Stadium for her sole stop in the region. Hotels bookings are reportedly through the roof, and additional flights have been added , but keep an eye out for the openings of the new Grand Hyatt and the latest Raffles on Sentosa Island for more room at the inn, as it were.

Beyond the Swiftie reasons to swing by Singapore in March, there's also the return of glamorous and ultra-luxury train travel with Belmond's Eastern & Oriental Express , which will, in February, have begun their new itineraries from Singapore into the Malaysian peninsula and back, featuring excursions into Taman Negara National Park and culinary tours on Penang Island, which should be incredibly fun and engaging—that is, if you can tear yourself away from your plush state room or the swanky dining car.

Dana Point California

Dana Point, California

Dana Point, a small harbor city along California’s southern coast, is known for its incredible dolphin and whale populations. That reputation was cemented in early 2021, when the town was dubbed the first “Whale Heritage Site” in the United States, courtesy of the World Cetacean Alliance. Dana Point is now one of five global destinations to receive such an honor, specifically created to recognize destinations that offer dolphin- and whale-watching experiences that are both responsible and sustainable.

While you can see some whale species year-round, February and March are known as peak season to see the California Gray Whales as they make their annual migration to Baja California . Book a 2.5-hour tour with Captain Dave’s Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari , where you can see the magnificent mammals from an underwater glass pod while listening to a live narration from expert naturalists. Or, book the OC Wine Cruise with Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching, which lets passengers sample four different organic wines while they scan the sunset-lit waters for breaching whales.

Okavango Delta Botswana

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Picture it: Seasonal floodwaters rolling into parched sands and transforming them into a delicate tracery of glittering rivers and channels—the dry plains once again dripping with new life. That's the scene that greets you at the Okavango Delta in Botswana, the world's largest inland river delta. It plays host to a wide variety of wildlife, thriving across great swathes of the land held by the Moremi Game Reserve. You may encounter safari lions, leopards, giraffes, and rhinos; and when the floodwaters quench the land, you'll paddle in canoes past hippos, elephants, and crocodiles.

In the summer (that's January and February in Botswana, given it's the southern hemisphere), rainfall from the Angola highlands is drained by the Okavango River into the delta, where the water levels will rise and fall over the next four months, from March through June, making this month the best time to see the transformation happen before your very eyes.

Looking for a place to stay? African Bush Camps opened the riverside Khwai Lediba in 2023, and will open Atzaro Okavango in March 2024. The latter will feature 10 lagoon-side suites and offer peak safari-luxe vibes and a strong sense of place through design. (To no surprise, it's one of the Best Places to Go in Africa in 2024 .)

By March, spring is stirring across the northern hemisphere, thawing a number of high-profile destinations from their chilly, off-peak periods – with the added bonus that the crowds have yet to arrive. Meanwhile, in the southern hemisphere, the mercury is starting to slide in the opposite direction, attracting thrill seekers and bargain hunters for low-season adventures.

No matter what you’re looking for, it’s a rewarding time to hit the road. Find out some of the best places to go in March.

The best places to travel to in March for relaxation

Towering palm trees cast some shade along the walkway that runs along the edge of Canteras Beach in Gran Canaria, Spain, where several people relax under sun loungers on the sand.

Gran Canaria, Spain

Why now? Spring clean mind and body with a tai chi and chill-out break.

Gran Canaria  is a perfect destination for a wellness escape amid sand dunes and blissfully balmy weather, with temperatures reliably above 20°C (68°F) and over seven hours of sunshine daily in March. The beautiful belly-button of the Canary Islands is a hotbed of yoga, meditation, tai chi and qigong retreats, with several clustered around Las Palmas , Gran Canaria’s culturally diverse capital. Pick a location according to your interests – after your early-morning tai chi session, you’ll have plenty of time to relax or get active. You’ll find beaches galore on which to get horizontal, but consider striking out onto the island's hiking trails, too.

Why now? Ride reliable waves in a surf and yoga hot spot.

A string of surf camps stud Morocco ’s coast between Agadir and Essaouira , mostly clustered around Taghazout and the quieter fishing village of Tamraght. The surf is reliably good between October and March, when the weather starts to warm up but waves are still big, long and consistent. Most camps offer a simple recipe: limber up with sunrise yoga, then grab a board and find the best breaks, sparing time to explore the galleries and souqs of Essaouira’s fortified medina.

Costa Rica

Why now? Enjoy coasts, cloud forest, volcanoes and white-water rivers.

A tiny country with a huge range of landscapes and wildlife, Costa Rica also has huge weather – hence the lush rainforests. Come in March to hit the dry(er) season on both Pacific and Caribbean coasts and in the highlands (though showers are always likely). It’s also after the peak US holiday period, so crowds are thinner. The hardest part will be deciding what to do while there .

North wales .

Why now? Experience outdoor activities among daffodils and spring lambs.

Springtime in Wales : lambs wander hillsides sprinkled with clusters of butter-yellow daffodils. Though sunshine is never guaranteed here, the Welsh countryside is glorious in March, which is a great time to dust off wintry cobwebs and explore some of the UK ’s less-visited countryside. The Dee Valley is a year-round destination for active adventures – the River Dee being one of the few that offers great white water year-round, with rafting, kayaking, body-boating and even stand-up paddleboarding providing adrenaline highs.

The best places to travel to in March for food

A split image. The left-hand picture shows a person pouring maple syrup onto snow to make maple sugar taffy. The image on the right-hand side shows spice baskets at a market in Istanbul.

New Brunswick, Canada

Why now? Succumb to your sweet tooth amid snowy landscapes.

March is maple syrup month in New Brunswick , a province as peaceful and little-touristed as it is packed with natural beauty and history. In this “fifth season,” temperatures start to nudge above freezing and the sap rises in maple trees. Sugar camps (or shacks) welcome hungry visitors to sugarbush events with cooked breakfasts of eggs, bacon, sausage, beans and pancakes – all smothered with that sticky syrup, of course. With snow lingering on the ground, work up an appetite cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or winter hiking in spectacular settings such as Fundy National Park .

Istanbul, Turkey

Why now? Discover bazaars, ancient wonders and culinary secrets in peace.

Istanbul always astounds, but in March, as things begin to warm up toward the end of the low season, you can enjoy discounts, smaller crowds and more-forgiving weather. Be sure to save some time for the greatest legacy the Ottomans left the world: food. Why else would the Spice Bazaar be so huge and bustling? From simple kebabs to meze feasts and the luscious aubergine masterpiece, imam bayıldı , there are few cuisines as indulgent as that of Turkey . Over the past couple of decades, a roster of excellent food-themed walking tours and cooking schools has sprung up in Istanbul, providing the opportunity to combine a springtime city break with a culinary reboot.

The best places to travel to in march for culture.

A split image. On the left, the Muluwurri Magpies from Melville Island (wearing black and white) play against the Tapalinga Super Stars in a game of Australian Rules football. On the right. The Farnese Collection at Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples.

Tiwi Islands, Australia

Why now? Revel in the excitement of the annual Football Grand Final and Art Sale.

If you thought the rest of the country was football-mad, wait until you experience the extraordinary levels of fandom among the Indigenous people of this two-island archipelago , 80km (50 miles) north of Darwin. Here, more than one third of the population of under 3000 plays the Aussie-rules game, many at the highest level. As March ebbs and the rains start to ease off, the annual Tiwi Islands Football Grand Final and Art Sale draws lovers of both sport and culture, who hop across from mainland Northern Territory to watch the match and pick up unique pieces from the “Islands of Smiles.”

Why now? Quieter sites and a gritty city in early spring.

Naples is unapologetic. This southern Italian sprawl is scruffy around the edges, yet has an indefatigable spirit, a dramatic location (on the Bay of Naples, in the shadow of Mt Vesuvius ) and, of course, the best pizzas in the country. Off-season March is neither too hot nor too cold, and well before most visitors descend. That means unmissable sights such as the Museo Archeologico Nazionale (packed with Pompeiian artifacts) are crowd-free – as is Pompeii itself, just a 45-minute train ride south.

The best places to travel to in March for wildlife and nature

A split image. The left-hand image shows Someiyoshino cherry blossoms in full bloom. The right-hand images shows a sea turtle in Tobago.

Kyūshū, Japan

Why now? Be dazzled by cherry blossoms during early sakura season.

A cherry tree in bloom is a delightful sight – sure. But 2000 cherry trees blossoming in the clear spring air – now, that’s a mind-boggling spectacle. Japan ’s warmer southwestern island of Kyūshū blushes with blossom before the better-known spots on Honshū. Its Somei Yoshino and Yamazakura trees bloom from mid-March in parks around Fukuoka , at the magnificent castle in  Kumamoto , and in Yoshino Park in Kagoshima , set against the dramatic backdrop of aptly named Mt Sakurajima.

Why now? Spot dazzling birdlife and watch nesting sea turtles.

This emerald isle afloat off the coast of South America is everything you’d expect from a Caribbean paradise: palm-fringed beaches, a relaxed pace of life, sunshine. And plenty you might not expect, too. Rather than big cruise ships and package tourists, little Tobago attracts nature lovers, snorkelers and divers. March brings the fine weather you’d want on a beach holiday, but also nesting sea turtles – green, leatherback and hawksbill – who return to lay their own eggs on the patches of sand from which they hatched. Watch (with care!) as the lumbering females haul themselves ashore, or join monitoring and conservation programs to help these threatened beauties.

A one-horned rhino stands on a track in Kaziranga National Park, India

Why now? Track tigers and rhinos in the best season for wildlife-watching.

In March you have a good change of spotting a one-horned rhino in India’s Kaziranga National Park . And with the eagle eyes and experience of an expert guide, you might also spy tigers (Kaziranga has one of the densest populations), leopards, gaurs, elephants and sloth bears.

Looking to plan further ahead? Here are the best places to travel in every month of the year .

Global Grasshopper – travel inspiration for the road less travelled

20 Awesome Places to Visit in March in USA

Early spring is when you can enjoy iconic landscapes in manageable temperatures for less money than peak seasons, so I think it’s a win-win! From traveling around during March, here are my favourite spots to explore…

1. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve

For a truly awe-inspiring experience, I’d recommend taking the winding dirt road through Antelope Valley in Southern California. Here, blankets of poppies carpet the ground in flames of red and orange, and 8 miles of foot trails weave through the captivating blooms.

Sadly, I can’t second-guess Mother Nature, and weather conditions greatly influence the poppy crop. Still, they typically bloom for ten weeks between late February and early May and peak for around three weeks between late March and early April.

Witnessing this breathtaking display is unforgettable in a good year. I suggest staying informed by checking the Antelope Valley Nature Preserve website as your visit approaches, ensuring you have the most up-to-date information on the flowers and their blooming status.

  • Visitors’ Centre Address: 150th St W, Lancaster, CA 93536
  • Average temperature – 19 degrees

My favorite highlights…

  • Capturing breathtaking shots of the vibrant and beautifully bloomed poppies.
  • Taking a walk along one of the trails that weave through the pretty flowers.
  • Checking out an exhibit at the Jane S. Pinheiro Interpretive Center filled with botanical watercolor paintings.

2. New Orleans, Louisiana

Most romantic hotels in New Orleans

If, like me, you are a lover of literature, arts, and culture but not a fan of scorching heat and crowds, visit New Orleans this month. The city embraces the transition into spring with the big Mardi Gras celebrations beginning to wind down and many wonderful festivals emerging to replace them.

The Tennessee Williams Literary Festival brings together budding writers and established playwrights for a program of masterclasses and performances of original works, culminating with the famous ‘Stella’ shouting competition in The French Quarter.

The LGBTQIA community celebrates its literary heritage in the famous Saints and Sinners festival, which also takes place this month. Wednesday at the Square and Buku Festivals curate unique, immersive musical talents; plenty is going on for foodies, too.

New Orleans is a vibrant city that embodies the spirit of springtime, so it is no surprise that this is the perfect time to enjoy it! I would also recommend staying in one of the many interesting boutique hotels, making your stay even more special.

  • Visitors’ Centre Address: 339 Decatur St, New Orleans, LA 70130
  • Average temperatures  – 23 degrees

My highlights…

  • Attending one of the lively and fun events/celebrations, such as Mardi Gras Day, Super Sunday, or St Patrick’s Day parade.
  • Getting a tourist pass and enjoying a discount on various activities and attractions across the city.
  • Watching a musical production at the famous and historic venue, Saenger Theatre.

3. Golden Isles, Georgia

Golden Isles, Georgia

The Golden Isles are four beautiful barrier islands between Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. The islands rise out of a vast area of marshlands, giving the appearance of one continuous stretch.

The Isles are a melting pot of cultures, and this is what I love about it! During this month,  gentle breezes and spring sunshine make it the perfect time to get out and explore nature before it becomes too hot and crowded.

I recommend strolling through shady woodland, picnicking on sandy beaches, and watching the sun sink over the horizon – bliss!

Go nature spotting for rare Leatherback turtles, a plethora of birds, and leaping dolphins, or relax and enjoy some boutique shopping in Pier Village or fine dining in the quaint village of Redfern.

For original Victorian architecture and speciality shopping and dining, I suggest visiting historic downtown Brunswick, where brownstone townhouses and bright-colored awnings lend an old-fashioned vintage feel.

  • Visitor Centre Address: 529 Beachview Dr, St Simons Island, GA 31522
  • Average temperature  – 21 degrees
  • Climbing 129 steps to the top of the lighthouse on St Simons Island for picturesque panoramic views across the coast.
  • Visiting Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island and watching a spectacular colorful sky as the sun set.

4. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia in spring time

It’s not always sunny in Philadelphia, but there’s a good chance it will be bright and fresh this month. I personally think this is the perfect time to visit the city, temperatures average around 12 degrees in the day so take a jacket you’ll be fine!

In my opinion, one of the loveliest sights this time of year is the swathes of cherry blossoms in West Fairmount Park. Here, y ou can enjoy a picnic and admire the manicured lawns, or stroll around the tranquil Japanese House and whimsical ponds and waterfalls, all under a fragrant canopy of blossom trees.

The springtime is also a great time to enjoy a craft beer in the early spring sunshine so I would highly recommend visiting one of the city’s many breweries and taking in some of the lovely historical streets in neighborhoods like Spring Gardens.

It’s also a great time to enjoy some local artists’ work in progress at Cherry Street Pier and hang out with arty types along the wonderful waterfront.

Drive-in movies are also a big thing in Philly; the milder temperatures mean lots of opportunities to see old and new cool films in this classic American way!

  • Visitor Centre Address: 599 Market St, Philadelphia, PA 19106
  • Average temperature – 12 degrees
  • Catching a lively NBA game.
  • Trying the unique Dining in The Dark blindfolded tasting experience!
  • Visiting the eclectic indoor marketplace inspired by Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.

5. Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks, Alaska in March

Fairbanks is a truly vibrant river city in the very North of Alaska. It serves as the perfect base camp for the wilderness of Denali National Park…6 million acres of alpine forests, snow-capped mountains, and untouched nature.

The icy temperatures mean the crowds tend to come here in the summer, but in spring, you can see the city and surroundings at their finest, under the breathtaking colors of The Northern Lights!

It is also the season of midnight sun, endless sunsets and sunrises, and the World Ice Art Competition. I would also recommend enjoying the ice museum, hot springs, hot coffee, and many unique adventure sports!

I also suggest trying your hand at Ice Skating, Cross Country Skiing, or safely spotting wildlife in the wilderness. If you are lucky, you might see Grizzly Bears, Black Bears, Wolves, Moose and Caribou, and maybe even a golden eagle!

  • Visitor Centre Address: 101 Dunkel St, Fairbanks, AK 99701
  • Average temperature –  -3 to -19 degrees
  • Taking an Aurora tour or overnight experience to catch the magical dancing northern lights.
  • Warming up at the Chena Hot Springs in the outdoor pool surrounded by the fresh, crisp snow.
  • Checking out the sculptures created by artists from all over the world at the World Ice Art Competition.

6. Texas Hill Country

Texas Hill Country flowers

The Hill Country stretches splendidly between San Antonio and Austin, encompassing beautiful landscapes, historic towns and villages, natural wonders, and amazing wineries.

During this month the  temperatures are pleasant and the wildflowers are in full bloom, especially the Texas Bluebonnets, lupin-like and a stunning shade of electric blue they are the official state flower.

Nestled amongst meadows of wildflowers and gentle hills are several stunning historical towns of German heritage. There are many to choose from, depending on your preferences. I personally think Boerne is a great town with a wonderful cavern at its center and lots of quaint boutique shops and cafes lining its Main Street.

The very German city of Fredericksburg oozes Bavarian charm. Kerrville is one of the oldest settlements in Texas and is perfect for history buffs. Finally, I suggest not missing Lake McQueene, which has waters that are perfect for swimming. You don’t want to miss it!

The Texans love spring, so as you travel through Hill Country, expect plenty of cook-offs, festivals, and cultural events to keep you entertained!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 160 Ingram Hills Rd, Ingram, TX 78025, Phone: +1 830-367-2151
  • Average temperature – 23 degrees
  • Exploring the Medina River by kayaking through the tall and winding bald cypress trees.
  • Tasting some of Texas’s best and award-winning spirits at a local distillery.
  • Driving through the Willow City Loop, which comes alive with color from the beautiful flowers.

7. Nantucket and Martha’s Vinyard, Massachusetts

Nantucket - most beautiful places to visit in Massachusetts

I would highly recommend avoiding the hordes of deep-pocketed tourists and visiting this iconic destination in the springtime! This month is a wonderful time to visit Cape Cod, as it is when the majestic humpback whales reside in the blue waters around the islands.

Averaging between 40 and 50 feet long, seeing these amazing creatures propel themselves out of the water is something you’ll never forget!

It won’t be hot, but that’s the trade-off of having the place virtually for yourself! Aside from the whales, I recommend just kicking back and enjoying the idyllic beaches, quaint fishing villages, sun-bleached harbor towns, and historic lighthouses for a much more reasonable price than during peak season.

You can also check out some of the legendary filming locations for Jaws on Martha’s Vinyard and get a glimpse of some of the crazy multi-million dollar summer estates of the rich and famous, all without battling through the crowds!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Nantucket Department of Culture & Tourism. 25 Federal Street, Nantucket, MA 02554, Phone: 508-228-0925 Fax: 508-325-5443
  • Average temperatures – 8 degrees
  • Wrapping up for a stroll along the local beach to escape the hustle and bustle of the town.
  • Discovering Polly Hill Arboretum, an Island landmark filled with shrubs, trees, and flowers.
  • Going on a guided tour to see historic sites such as Oldest House, The Old Mill, and Greater Light.

8. Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas

Petit Jean State Park USA

The park is now a beautiful expanse of unique landscapes carved out by Cedar Creek and packed with unusual bluffs and canyons. It also has an impressive 95-ft waterfall that tumbles from the 100-acre Lake Bailey, created by Damming the Creek.

This month’s weather is temperate, the trees bloom, and the sunsets are spectacular. Temperatures hover around 17 degrees this time of year.

There are several rustic cabins and the central Mather Lodge, all built in the 1930s and available for accommodation, as well as designated camping and glamping, so I recommend choosing one for a truly cozy vacation!

Many gorgeous trails traverse the park and there is boating and Kayaking on Bailey Lake as well as two outdoor pools. I honestly think it’s the perfect accessible spring escape for outdoors lovers who find bigger parks daunting.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 1285 Petit Jean Mountain Rd, Morrilton, AR 72110
  • Average temperature  – 17 degrees
  • Visiting the indoor Petit Jean Farmers Market and sampling some delicious local produce.
  • Capturing an Insta-worthy shot underneath the Natural Bridge along Seven Hollows Trail created from a rock formation.
  • Hiking down to the base of Cedar Falls to admire one of the biggest waterfalls in the state.

9. The Tidal Basin, Washington D.C.

Best places to visit in the USA in March/Spring

Each Spring, Washington D.C. ‘s tidal basin is transformed by acres of pink and white cherry blossoms, and I highly recommend a visit around this time!

Thousands of tourists are drawn to the nation’s capital yearly to witness the spectacle! Usually, the tree’s peak bloom is late March through early April.

To avoid heavy crowds and maximize beautiful photo opportunities, I recommend visiting the Tidal Basin early in the morning and catching the sun rising over D.C.’s iconic marbled monuments under blankets of fragrant petals!

Then, I suggest using the rest of the day to explore the amazing city full of green spaces, awe-inspiring architecture, and wonderful museums and sculpture gardens. If you have limited time, I recommend an open-top bus that will take you around all the famous presidential monuments and Arlington Cemetary.

I would recommend visiting some historic districts such as Georgetown, a famous university with atmospheric steps used in The Exorcist and DuPont Circle for eclectic nightlife, exciting dining, and wonderful art in The Phillips Collection.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1501 Maine Ave SW, Washington, Phone  (202) 479-2426
  • Average temperature – 12-19°C
  • Enjoying a bike ride around the stunning loop and array of national monuments.
  • Renting a paddleboat and enjoying some time spent relaxing on the calm water.
  • Spending the day at the National Cherry Blossom Festival and seeing live entertainment amongst the flowers.

10. Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai Hawaii - best places to visit in March

A top vacation spot, I personally think this is the perfect time to enjoy Kauai’s lush vegetation and beautiful beaches without the summer crowds. Although Kauai is the wettest of the Hawaiian islands and March is still considered the rainy season, the rain typically comes in short bursts and the sun quickly returns.

If you aim for the end of the month you will likely experience little rain, warm temperatures, and lower prices as peak season begins in April. Although Kauai is small it is not called’ The Garden Island’ for nothing and its abundance of colorful blooms will not fail to delight!

Expect palm-fringed beaches, crystal clear waters, unique multi-colored canyons, rare wildlife, and plunging waterfalls…a little slice of paradise infused with the famed ‘Aloha’ spirit!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 4-484 Kuhio Highway Kapaa ,  Hawaii ,  96746. Phone 808-822-5113
  • Average temperature – 22 degrees
  • Seeing the island from a fabulous helicopter tour overlooking the beach landscape.
  • Kayaking around Hanalei Bay, I also enjoyed a delicious meal while watching the sunset.
  • Flying through through the native forests on a zipline which was a very adrenaline-pumping experience!

11. Fontainebleau State Park, Louisiana

Fontainebleau State Park

Treat yourself to a stay in an iconic wooden cabin on stilts in this beautiful State Park that stretches for 2,800 acres along the crystal shores of Lake Pontchartrain.

Historically a sugar plantation, Fontainebleau was named after the forest near Paris, the place of choice for centuries of French kings in their leisure time.

Of course, we commoners can enjoy the many peaceful pastimes on offer in the Louisiana version, it’s a popular spot for all things aquatic; boating, canoeing, swimming, and personally I would highly recommend just sunbathing on the unspoiled sandy beaches.

Visitors can stroll beneath the centuries-old oak trees and native cypresses or walk along the wooden pier to admire the lake’s crystal waters.

During this month,  the temperature is warm and the humidity fairly low, which makes it the perfect time to explore the 27 miles of hiking and biking trails along the Tammany Chase, which follows the route of the old railroad tracks.

I suggest bringing a picnic for a beautiful, tranquil day in idyllic surroundings, unbelievably less than an hour away from New Orleans!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 62883 LA-1089, Mandeville, LA 70448
  • Average temperature  – 22 degrees
  • Renting a paddleboard from Bayou Adventure and spending time on the water.
  • Spending a day at the beach and swimming and sunbathing.
  • Exploring the nature trails.

12. Providence Canyon, Georgia

Providence canyon Georgia

Georgia gets very hot in peak summer season and as it is not a massive park it can also get very crowded. For easier hiking temperatures and uncluttered photographs of the beautiful ‘Little Grand Canyon’ I think this month is the perfect month for a visit.

The park’s rock faces are especially spectacular due to the 143 varied shades that range from orange and red hues to pure white; catching the sun sinking behind them is a really special sight.

Visitors can enjoy 10 miles of trails that circumnavigate the canyon rim and take in some of the park’s other wonders, such as the cascading Providence waterfalls and the strange shells of old 1950s automobiles that are relics of another era.

For perfect clear night skies, I would highly recommend camping out in one of the areas around the canyons and witnessing the wonder of the stars without any light pollution to obscure them!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 8930 Canyon Rd, Lumpkin, GA 31815
  • Average temperature – 21 degrees
  • Experiencing the picturesque views whilst enjoying a picnic lunch at one of the viewpoints.
  • Visiting Dick’s Creek Falls, a stunning spot located just outside the park.
  • Hiking along the Canyon Loop Trail and seeing the incredible nine canyons along the 2.5-mile path with scenic landscapes.

13. Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta CIty USA

Summer temperatures in Atlanta are pretty intense, so I personally think early spring is the perfect time to take advantage of this southern gem. As the Southeast’s cultural hub Atlanta is positively teeming with creativity, arts, and mind-blowing history, it’s also a foodie heaven!

Both buildings are now part of The Martin Luther King JR National Historical Park , and I think it’s a great place to stroll in springtime! Another beautiful place to admire this month in bloom is The Atlanta Botanical Gardens, whose landscaped grounds are budding with color in early spring.

The foodie scene in Atlanta reflects this passion and fusion of cultures and famous southern hospitality; you can find delicious and innovative food at every turn. I suggest leaving space for some Georgia Bourbon Pecan Pie from Pie Shop Downtown!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 267 Park Ave W NW, Atlanta, GA 30303
  • Average temperatures – 19 degrees
  • Having fun at Atlanta Fair with carnival games, exciting rides, and delicious food.
  • Going on a themed dining experience with robot waiters and crafty cocktails!
  • Admiring the vibrant street art around the city where talented artists have created incredible murals.

14. Saguaro National Park, Arizona

Saguaro National Park Arizona

Saguaro National Park is named for the iconic giant cactuses known to grow up to 78ft tall, although the average height is about 40ft.  Walking amidst these giants, especially as the sun sinks below the horizon, is an eerie and wonderful experience. For a great view of the Saguaro Forest, I suggest hiking up to the Valley View Overlook, which offers an amazing panoramic view of the Cacti.

If you want to get in amongst them, I would also recommend the Mica View Loop, which takes you right through the middle of these amazing plants!

This month, you have the bonus of all the beautiful wildflowers in bloom, splashing the desert landscape with color. You’ll also find ancient petroglyphs and an array of wildlife, from bobcats to venomous Gila Monsters…I’d suggest giving both a respectably wide berth!

Remember the park covers almost 100,000 acres and is split in two by the city of Tucson, for the best cactus action I suggest heading for the smaller western portion.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 2700 N Kinney Road, Tucson, AZ
  • Average temperatures – 24 degrees
  • Exploring a variety of cacti through the winding path at the Cactus Garden Trail located at the visitor center.
  • Capturing an Instagrammable shot of a huge cactus on a hiking trail.
  • Taking a trip to Rincon Mountains for breathtaking views overlooking the unique cacti-filled landscape.

15. Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park, Kansas

Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park

The badlands are a vast acreage of ancient wilderness that will take you back to when the Oglala Sioux tribe occupied the lands.

The landscape is arid and strange, with rare Niobrara Chalk outcrops rising from flat prairies like temples. The name ‘Little Jerusalem’ refers to a mile-long collection of these white rocks that rise in awe-inspiring 100 ft spires and cliffs, bringing to mind the ancient city.

During this month the temperature is mild and humidity low so I think it’s a great time to hike one of the two permanent trails and treat yourself to the best views without navigating summer crowds.

Aside from Little Jerusalem, there have been traces of life dating back as far as 85 million years, so I highly recommend looking out for amazing fossils of ancient giant clams and oysters!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: County Road 400 and Gold Road, Oakley, KS 67748
  • Average temperature – 15 degrees
  • Experiencing a Ranger-Guided Backcountry Hike, where I explored the off-trail paths and saw a different perspective of the rock formations.
  • Going on the short Overlook trail which provides breathtaking views across the park.
  • Walking the Life on the Rocks Trail and admiring two panoramic viewpoints along the natural, chalky rock surface path.

16. San Diego, California

San Diego Beach spring

I think San Diego is awesome for many reasons: it’s beautiful, laid back, rich in maritime history, and surrounded by gorgeous swathes of ocean and parkland!

During this month you can catch some amazing festivals such as Paddy’s Day and The Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival and enjoy the city’s many outdoor delights in the sunshine.

You’ll also get better rates on flights and accommodation by avoiding peak season F or totally chilled-out bohemian vibes I highly recommend Ocean Beach for cheap and delicious Mexican food, killer margaritas, and a real new wave ‘summer of love’/ surfy atmosphere.

Just out of the city, nature lovers will delight at the carpets of wildflowers in Anza Borrego Desert State Park or the flower fields at Carlsbad Ranch. It is also the perfect time to catch the immense Gray Whales on their migration back north.

I would suggest driving along the historic Route 101 and seeing how many you can spot or taking an organized tour from the marina.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 996 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, Phone:  (619) 236-1242
  • Average temperature – 19 degrees
  • Taking a ride through the exquisite and colorful Carlsbad Flower Fields on a retro tractor.
  • Taking a sunset sail tour and enjoying the city’s landmarks, and have an unforgettable experience.
  • Exploring the Spanish-style village in Balboa Park, filled with museums, galleries, and gardens.

17. Arches National Park, Utah

Arches National Park, Utah

With intolerable summer temperatures of up to 100 degrees, The Arches National Park’s peak season is often unbearable for those not accustomed to the heat.

Add crowds to that; no matter how fabulous the landscape is, it can be a miserable experience! I personally think it’s wiser instead to head to the iconic park in early spring when temperatures are far more pleasant, and the crowds are yet to arrive.

The Arche’s strange prehistoric landscape has become synonymous with Utah, and the instantly recognizable ‘Delicate Arch’ is now the symbol for the whole state. With over 2000 of these otherworldly stone arches and relics of the nomadic Ute tribe, there is plenty to explore across the 119 square miles of the reserve!

Most trails are short and accessible except The Devils Garden Primitive Trail, which requires a slightly more seasoned hiker. For the ultimate Arches experience, I recommend trying to hit the park at sunset and seeing the whole thing cast in an ethereal orange glow. It is absolutely beautiful!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Ut-211, Canyonlands National Park, Moab, UT 84532, +1 435-259-4711
  • Average temperature – 16 degrees
  • Getting an Insta-worthy shot of the breathtaking mountain backdrop during the hike to the iconic Delicate Arch.
  • Taking part in the free Ranger-Led program.
  • Exploring an array of several scenic spots by adventuring along the Arches Scenic Drive.

18. Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs USA

If you fancy yourself a bit of a hipster you’d better get to Palm Springs, a cool and artsy city long favored by the Hollywood jet-set for its glamorous elegance, sunshine, and healing springs.

The city, nestled in the beautiful Coachella Valley between 4 mountain ranges is particularly notable for its many examples of mid-century modern architecture, swanky boutique shopping, and world-class art….and golf of course.

While you’re there, I would suggest you don’t miss the amazing aerial tramway for stunning views across the entire valley, perhaps a mountaintop lunch, or the amazing Sunnylands Public Gardens and Mansion.

Although much of the mid-century architecture belongs to private owners you can still take in some amazing examples by taking a tour through the Tennis Club and Araby Cove districts.

There are so many things to do but a visit to Palm Springs would not be complete without making the most of alfresco dining in the city’s beautiful restaurants…my little tip, go for ones that are tucked away off main tourist routes and you’ll get superior quality for a fraction of the price.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Palm Springs Visitor Information Center, 2901 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262, Phone: 800-347-7746 | 760-778-8418
  • Average temperature – 27 degrees
  • Taking a break from the heat in Palm Springs Art Museum , filled with contemporary paints and sculptures.
  • Viewing the Tahquitz Canyon home to a magnificent 50-foot waterfall.
  • Getting a wellness pass and getting a discount from an array of spas!

19. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona Arizona - March vacation ideas

The desert town of Sedona near Flagstaff, Arizona, is America’s answer to Glastonbury. During this month, I think hikers will delight in the perfect temperatures, rust-colored trails, and wildflowers in full bloom.

Surrounded by majestic red rock buttes and ancient pine forests, the town has become a haven for people in search of spiritual and metaphysical healing. The streets are lined with new-age shops and Native American-inspired treatment centers. I personally love it!

Sedona is believed to have several ‘Vortexes’, swirling centers of energy emanating from the red rocks. It is regarded as a cathedral without walls or a natural henge.

Here you can expect to find yoga retreats, hippy rituals, and all forms of spiritual healing, it is said that no matter what brings you to Sedona you will always feel lighter and brighter with your spirit soothed, uplifted, and restored!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Sedona Visitor Information Center, 331 Forest Road, Sedona, AZ, 86336, Phone: 928.282.7722
  • Average temperatures – 20 degrees
  • Experiencing one of the best shopping spots in Sedona at the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village.
  • Driving along the Red Rock Scenic Byway and checking out the stunning scenery and landmarks.
  • Going on a thrilling Pink Jeep Tour  and exploring the steeper trails in a cool wrangler!

20. Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Texas

Palo Duro Canyon State Park Texas

A great location for hikers or adventure vacation, Palo Duro Canyon on the Texas Panhandle is the second largest Canyon in the country and I personally think this is a great time to visit for warm temperatures, fewer crowds and less rain too!

The park’s most iconic rock formation is called the lighthouse. It rises out of the ground in 300 ft of splendid rust-colored rock…in my opinion, the hugely popular lighthouse trail is the best way to view it and get amazing views out over the canyon.

I think it’s also worth extending your stay to overnight in one of the camping or glamping sites, as the night skies in this part of the world are truly phenomenal!

I would suggest looking out for the unmistakable herds of protected Texas Longhorn cattle that roam freely across the land. Adventure lovers might want to try the terrifying zip line that crosses the canyon between Dallas and New Mexico.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: State Hwy Park Rd 5, Canyon, TX 79015
  • Average temperature – 20 degrees
  • Mountain biking on one of the scenic trails.
  • Going on a fun zipline located near the park’s entrance.
  • Enjoying a night under the stars at Palo Duro Canyon State Park Campground.

Istanbul

1.  Istanbul

One of the world’s most fascinating cities, Istanbul has one foot in Europe and one in Asia , with the mighty Bosphorus strait dividing the city in two. While the Asian side is well worth a visit, most of the attractions can be found in the European part, from the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar to the Hagia Sophia, the Topkapi Palace and plenty, plenty more. March is generally pleasant weather-wise, with sunny days and mild temperatures.

Sicily

2.  Sicily

Sure, we all know Italy as a summer vacation spot, but it does get pretty choker. Why not beat the start of the high season and head to Sicily for some springtime sun, before the temperatures reach their scorching summer heights? The breezy March weather will make for a much more enjoyable time to sample all the seafood and explore the gorgeous streets of Palermo and Catania. But it's not just the island’s cities that are worth a peruse - the vibrant town of Cefalu is home to some incredible ancient ruins and even a Norman cathedral.

Copenhagen

3.  Copenhagen

Straddling two coastal islands, Denmark ’s capital makes for an excellent city break in March. Most of the main attractions are open, from the National Museum of Denmark to Amalienborg Palace.

Jaipur, aka the ‘Pink City’ on account of the blushed hue of its buildings, is one of India ’s top highlights, and March temperatures (around 30C/86F at the hottest part of the day) make it all the more agreeable. FAQs: Best Places to Visit in March, USA 2024

It doesn’t take much to see just how unique the USA is in March. You could enjoy fewer Grand Canyon crowds or experience St Patrick’s Day in New Orleans. There are exciting places to visit in March when you can take advantage of fewer crowds and better temperatures. Hooray for shoulder seasons.

Before you rush off, what are the vital things you should know? Here are some leading FAQs that could make a difference in your trip.

Where is it warmest in the US in March?

Look towards destinations in Florida – hello Everglades – or Texas or southern California. It’s an excellent time to visit places like San Antonio, the Everglades, and Los Angeles.

Where is the best place to go in March?

Hot Springs National Park and Arches National Park are fun places to visit in March. However, we recommend checking out some of the most iconic and vibrant cities for St Patrick’s Day. New Orleans and San Francisco should definitely be on your list.

Which place is best to visit in March month?

Generally, the first half of March is a shoulder month, so look at places you have on your bucket list. For instance, the Everglades or Grand Canyon. Make the most of the optimal temperatures – skiing in Aspen, spotting the Northern Lights in Glacier National Park, or spotting crocs under the sun while kayaking mangroves.

Where do people go for spring break in the USA?

If you want to party, head to destinations like Las Vegas or Panama City in Florida. However, places like San Diego and Charleston are also good spots, so take notice of the ‘second cities’ too.

To Conclude

To Conclude Washington Monument Cherry Blossoms

What will it be? Texas Hill Country? Palm Springs? Or San Francisco? As you can see, you’ve got a fabulous lot of choices. March is a beautiful time to visit the USA’s best destinations. The first half of the month is the quietest, ideal for crowd dodging. Then, the second half of March is Spring Break, perfect for meeting new people and partying. It’s also when St Patrick’s Day is celebrated on the 17th of March. March in the USA has this fantastic balance of quiet and extroverted travel experiences.

The balance of crowds, better temperatures, and the allure of St Patrick’s Day celebrations makes March a leading month for US travel. We recommend scheduling a trip – or two.

There are some additional options, like San Diego and Saguaro National Park. However, we’d save these for  places to visit in the USA in January.  With San Diego, there isn’t a considerable temperature difference between January and March. Saguaro National Park has flowers in spring, but the crowds flock to the park because of it. So, while you  could  visit these two destinations in March, we’d suggest pushing your trip back to January so you can enjoy them at their quietest.

Some other food for thought are alternative cherry blossom destinations. Portland in Oregon , has a beautiful Japanese Garden with cherry blossoms, as does the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York and Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey. These three could be extra contenders if you still need inspiration.

Whichever destination you choose, we hope you have a wonderful time exploring the best of the USA in March.

No matter where you travel, March is a time of change. In the Northern Hemisphere the first signs of spring arrive; in the south, it means the end of sweltering summer heats and the arrival of cooler days.

For travellers, however, March will always be shoulder season, a month that means fewer crowds, better weather or affordable deals. It’s a time of adventure and hurling yourself off on new adventures.

So, whether you're searching for wildflower explosions, mass migrations or the wildest cultural festivals on the planet, we’ve put together some of the top destinations to visit this March.

Here are the best places to visit in March...

1. michoacán, mexico.

Early March is the last chance to see monarch butterflies gathering en masse in Mexico. By then, the branches of Michoacán’s oyamel fir trees droop with the weight of some 200 million sets of orange wings, readying for the journey north to the Californian coast.

It’s the world’s longest insect migration, spanning a 7,000km round trip. The first arrivals flutter into Mexico by November only to hibernate in cocoons over winter. They then emerge in February and March, a period marked by elaborate courtship dances that fill the air.

The best place to witness this is among the forested mountains of Michoacán, within the vast UNESCO-listed Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. The main sanctuaries here are Rosario, Sierra Chincua and Senguio, with short, steep hikes usually required for sightings. Bear in mind, though, that silence is required – butterflies are easily disturbed.

2. North Island, New Zealand

As the shoulder month between summer and autumn, March in New Zealand is dry and warm but not blisteringly hot. It makes the perfect time for escaping to the islands’ incredible wildernesses. But with its Great Walks often heavily oversubscribed, it’s worth opting for a different style of ‘tramping’ – accompanied by a Māori guide.

Up in the North Island’s Bay of Plenty, the Te Urewera rainforest was de-listed as a national park and granted personhood back in 2014. It was the first ecosystem in the world to be granted the rights of a human, and is now managed by a Maori council. With many Tūhoe Nation communities still residing within the area, multi-day treks (Oct–Apr) with an Indigenous guide let you explore not only sacred waters and beautiful rainforest, but spare time to visit the communities still living here.

Over a few days, these treks reveal a land as storied as it is wild, as you share traditional campfire tales, look for birds and visit the communities still living in the rainforest. Afterwards, combine with a visit to Auckland to catch the annual Arts Festival, which lights up the city across March.

3. ontario, canada.

March is the sweetest month in Canada for one simple reason: maple syrup. Between February and April, the country’s farmers extract this sugary sap from maples (and birch trees in late April) by drilling a hole in the trunk and attaching a spout and a bucket. It’s that easy. Some farms have as many as 60,000 taps, but it’s what is done with it afterwards that catches the eye.

Lanark County, on the fringes of Ottawa, dubs itself Ontario’s syrup capital for good reason. Seasonal ‘sugar bushes’ (groves) and camps open to visitors across the region. There’s even a maple heritage museum (and pancake house), run between March and April, that holds the Guinness world record for the largest number of maple syrup artefacts – it’s worth a visit for that alone.

Festivals continue across the province and well into late spring, with some areas – including Muskoka , north of Toronto – producing their own self-guided Maple Trail to take you to the more rural culinary hot spots. It’s a great way to escape the big cities and spend your money in the local communities.

4. Wilhelmina Bay, Antarctica

March sees the final few departures in the West Antarctic summer cruise season. After this, the pack ice begins to harden as winter sets it, creating impenetrable waters up to 1,000km around the continent.

March is also the best time to go whale watching here. Some six species of baleen whales, from blue to southern right, swim the Antarctic waters, but humpbacks in particular are dominant. Around this time, they also gather in pods in preparation for their migration north, making spotting them far easier.

Specialist wildlife-themed trips are your best bet for sightings, but plenty of peninsula cruises pass through hot spots, such as the Lemaire Channel, a feature on most ‘classic’ itineraries. Look especially for routes that include detours to Wilhelmina Bay, which has a high concentration of krill and sees huge numbers of humpbacks gather to feast there.

5. Central Valley, Chile

March and April are a special time in Chile’s Central Valley. This is wine country after all, and the beginning of autumn in the southern hemisphere fires the starter’s pistol for grape harvest season.

Over the border in Argentina, Mendoza hosts one of the biggest wine festivals ( vendimia ) in Latin America, but Chile’s tend to be far smaller, more intimate affairs, as a deluge of towns and farming communities see their streets turned into vast dining areas, bands take to the stage, and feet stained malbec-red.

The Colchagua Valley city of Santa Cruz is home to one of Chile’s largest vendimia . Vineyards surround it as far as the eye can see, and some 150 producers ride into town to show off their dazzlings carménères and cabernet sauvignons each March, making this a great starting point.

It’s a similar story in Curicó, though its four-day festival also brings some of the country’s more famous musicians to town, along with producers from the surrounding wine route. Indeed, most of the major wine valleys (Maipo, Maul, Casablanca, Aconcagua) have their own driving routes that thread the vineyards, so once you’re done with the festivities, hit the road for a serene escape.

6. Swedish Lapland

The lynx is not an easy feline to spot, especially in the snowbound terrain of north-west Sweden. But if you’re ever going to see one in the wild, March is the ideal time. This is breeding season, a time when these usually circumspect cats can be heard calling out to potential mates.

Tours to spot them are increasingly common, too, though it can be tough going. Visitors will likely find themselves snowmobiling out to a remote cabin in Jokkmokk, then Nordic skiing into the wilderness to lie in wait. But the chance to see one of Europe’s least-sighted felines is fair reward.

Even if you don’t get lucky, this is an exciting time to year to visit Sweden’s wild Arctic north. Vast populations of reindeer and moose can be seen plodding the snows, while at night this month affords the last chance to clearly see the cosmic contortions of the Northern Lights.

7. Annecy, France

Embrace the alternative at France’s answer to the Venice Carnival in March (3 to 5 March 2023). Where its Italian counterpart is literally crumbling under the weight of visitors, this canal city offers glamour aplenty but without the guilt of adding to overtourism.

Annecy itself is a quaint slice of medievalism. Veined in arterial canals and fringed by mountains, it lies a stone ’s throw from France ’s Swiss border. But in early March, it erupts into Alpine masquerade.

It ’s actually a modern festival, started in 1995, but what began as a handful of masked party-goers now sees hundreds of participants silently parading the streets of Annecy's canal-lined Old Town.

Wander the cobbles beneath windowboxes spilling with geraniums, as the scent of tartiflette (cheese, potato and bacon) wafts from windows. Be sure to also drop by its tiny medieval castle-turned-museum, then finish drifting villages and Alpine peaks on Lake Annecy.

8. Argentinean Patagonia

The months of March and April see the orca of Peninsula Valdés do something rather spectacular. As pups emerge in the local sea lion colony, the orca here have taken to performing smash-and-grab raids during high tide on the beaches, opportunistically snatching those playing in the shallows.

It’s an unforgettable sight, and it doesn’t even require a boat to see. The Punta Norte beach, within the Peninsula Valdés Fauna Reserve, is the best spot to see this. Places are tricky to get, however, and tours are the most reliable way to bag good views of the main striking areas.

For prime seats, see if you can bag a room at the Estancia La Ernestina . The hotel-restaurant overlooks the beach (and its very own penguin colony of some 140,000). Unsurprisingly, rooms fill up fast, so you'll need to book early.

9. Pelješac Peninsula, Croatia

Ston in Croatia is renowed for its oysters (Shutterstock)

Mid-March is oyster season in Croatia’s Pelješac peninsula, a slip of medieval villages and vineyards north of Dubrovnik. By then, the bay’s oysters are at their plumpest, signalling the moment that two neighbouring villages, Ston and Mali Ston, erupt in a food festival that typically coincides with the Feast of St Joseph (19 March) and draws in a few of its neighbours.

Boat-fresh oysters are prepared in every way imaginable, with the peninsula’s wineries also out in force, offering ample opportunity to sample local postup and dingač wines (among the finest in Croatia).

March is a great time to visit the peninsula, as the weather is kind and the summer masses have yet to descend. The cooler weather also makes it ideal for walking what remains of the medieval walls that wrap the two villages, circling the hillsides in between for nearly 5km. These vast defences were first constructed in 1333 AD, and 20 of the intervening towers are still standing.

Across the wider peninsula, there are ancients saltworks and family-run wineries (many offer tours and tastings) to explore. Ferries also open up the Dalmatian islands beyond, where the Byzantine and Roman ruins of Korcula and Hvar await. If you have time, head for the tiny, forest-covered national park island of Mjlet (ferries start in mid-March), just off the peninsula, which sees far fewer visitors than it deserves.

Colours are thrown into the air for India's Holi Festival (Shutterstock)

Colours are thrown into the air for India's Holi Festival (Shutterstock)

Holi festival blazes a colourful trail across India on the last full-moon day of the Hindu luni-solar calendar, which is typically in March. The night before (Holika Dahan) sees bonfires lit across the country, often accompanied by dancing; this is followed the next day by chaos, as the streets erupt in a fog of gulal (coloured dye) and kids packing water pistols. There’s nothing quite like it.

You’ll find festivities in most towns, though they differ hugely. In the far north-east (Assam), Holi continues for five days in the town of Barpeta, where it is known as Doul. Here locals decorate their houses with flowers and begin their celebrations with the burning of clay huts, followed by days of fireworks and food.

In the West Bengal university town of Shantiniketan, Holi is known as Basanta Utsav and takes on an altogether more refined approach. Women dress in yellow saris and adorn their hair with flowers, while the poems and songs of Rabindranath Tagore are recited. It has an almost carnivalesque feel to it, with plenty of live music accompanying the hurling of dyes.

Lastly, the Uttar Pradesh twin cities of Mathura and Vrindavan are considered the birthplace of Lord Krishna, whose divine love Holi festival celebrates. Events gear up a week in advance here (starting in nearby Barsana), with events shifting between temples in the cities. In Vrindavan, there is even a day set aside for widows (traditionally banned from celebrating), who converge on Gopinath temple to shower each other in colours.

Paro tshechu is one of the largest celebrations of the year (Shutterstock)

You would expect a country with a ‘Gross National Happiness’ index to throw a good a festival. Certainly, Bhutan’s tshechus (held on the tenth day of the lunar calendar month) are incredible sights, with visitors’ attentions typically focused on the masked Cham dancers, whose intricate costumes and performances are part meditation, part drama, retelling the story of Guru Rinpoche, who brought Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century.

One of the biggest tshechus takes place in Paro in March, when the town’s dzong (fortified monastery) becomes the setting for a four-day celebration of music, dance and spiritual contemplation, which culminates in the unravelling at dawn on the final day of a thangka – a sacred silk painting said to cleanse one’s sins with just the sight of it. As things wind down, finish with a hike to the magnificent Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest monastery), which clings to the side of a cliff at 3,000m.

March also brings the Dromache to Punakha, home to arguably the most beautiful of Bhutan’s fortified monasteries. This five-day celebration is devoted to deep meditation, followed by the town’s tshechu. During this time, monks will hold a reenactment of the Tibetan invasion of Bhutan in the early 17th century, when the army attempted to steal the monastery’s most precious relic but were fooled by a monk pretending to throw it in the river.

12. Valencia, Spain

The traditional burning of stone dollspaper during Falles Festival, Valencia (Shutterstock)

March sees Valencia literally light up thanks to the  Falles Festival , running from 15 to 19 March. The Spanish feast of San Jos é  culminates in five days of fireworks, firecrackers and… well, fire. Groups of workers spend months creating giant  p apier mâch é  ninots (satirical statues of well-known figures), with the sole purpose of setting them alight.

Firework displays begin about two weeks before the first night of the festival, when the statues are erected and the party begins in earnest. Parades celebrating the patron saint mark the days in between. You can ’t miss them: the brass bands start at 8am, then at 2pm the Plaza Ayuntamiento erupts in a cacophony of daytime firework displays.

The final two nights see the statues (some up to 20m high) burned while fireworks erupt overhead. Each neighbourhood even has its own celebrations, so no matter where you go in the city, you ’ll encounter glorious, all-consuming chaos.

13. Ireland

St. Patrick's Day celebrations in Dublin, Ireland (Shutterstock)

St. Patrick's Day celebrations in Dublin, Ireland (Shutterstock)

March celebrates the return of one of the world’s top holidays: St Patrick’s Day (17 March). And there’s no better place to embrace the ‘craic’ and all things green than in Ireland itself.

In Dublin, the day means more than just beer-fuelled mayhem and leprechaun hats - though you'll see plenty. Bars will be humming and the parade route between Parnell Square and St Patrick ’s Cathedral will be mob-deep, but there’s more on offer than just one day of revelry.  A five-day cultural festival takes over in the run up to the big day, ensuring plenty of music, art, poetry and comedy shows. First,  grab a traditional dish of corned beef and cabbage at nearby Gallaghers Boxty House, to line your stomach. Then, head to Temple Bar District, where live music is everywhere, and enjoy the packed, eponymous bar, where Dublin’s literary greats once drank.

But outside of the capital, the celebrations are just as lively. Co. Cork always expects grand parades in Ireland's second-largest city, while the small town of Dripsey is known for the shortest St Patricks Day parade at just over 90 metres. Head to Waterford to party in the city which first declared St Patrick's Day as a national holiday in 1903, or perhaps head to Dingle for the earliest parade in Ireland, starting just after the crack of dawn at 6am.

14. Lisse, The Netherlands

Tulip season in the Netherlands typically runs from the end of March until mid-May. It’s then that field after field of the bollenstreek (bulb region) fills with the most incredible colours. For most visitors, the Keu kenhof Gardens in Lisse are an easy way in. This landscaped botanical garden is home to some seven million bulbs, and if you don’t mind the crowds, it’s a blissful day out.

For the more adventurous, take to two wheels. The Lowlands make for easy pedalling, and cycling trips from Leiden are a simple way to quickly find yourself among fields and windmills. Maps with pre-planned routes are easy to find at tourist information and bike rental shops are plentiful.

15. Southern California, USA

Early March is the time to catch a natural phenomenon that has been occurring more frequently in California in recent years: the super bloom .  This rare floral event only occurs when seeds that have lain dormant for years in the desert soil suddenly erupt all at once.

It requires very specific conditions, but what was a once-in-a-decade event is happening more frequently, with super blooms sighted in both 2017 and 2019. R egardless of the year, there are always wildflower walks to be found here, particularly in Southern California. Here, the poppies of Antelope Valley turn the grasslands of the Mojave Desert into a sea of orange in late March, with strictly marked trails throughout the reserve.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is likewise ‘super bloom’ territory, but on any given year its canyons and mines see dramatic splashes of primrose, milkweed and poppies in mid-March. Visit Borrego Palm Canyon in particular, where trails to its palms and wild gardens are guarded by watchful bighorn sheep.

Nothing gets Japan’s islands of Kyushu and Honshu quite as excited the arrival of cherry blossom season in March. The sakura begin flowering in the former by the middle of the month, with the cities of Honshu (Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka) usually following suit before the start of April. By which point, parks are already full with hanami (blossom-watching parties) gathered beneath the pale-pink blooms.

There are thousands of scenic spots to soak up the blossoms. Some are more crowded than others, but it ’s best to combine with other sights. Tokyo’s Ueno Park is home to thousands of trees but also has plenty of museums and shrines to wander. Likewise, Kyoto’s Maruyama Park boasts aged teahouses, ornate temples and dazzling canal paths lined with blossoms and is a wonderful microcosm of this historic city.

March signals the last flourish of ‘green season’ in Africa's southern region (November to March). It’s a period that divides travellers, as the rains and sudden burst of lush foliage make both travel and spotting wildlife tougher. But, with the notable exception of South Africa, it’s far less busy and a more affordable period to travel.

The perfect time to visit Namibia.  Etosha National Park in particular sees less rain during this period than, say, the far busier safari parks of South Africa. The afternoon storms diminish as the month goes on, while the legacy of calving season sees its antelope herds increase dramatically, to the delight of predators.

The park also offers excellent birdwatching, as the salt pans fill with water and the wildflowers bloom. March and April are your last chance to catch the spring/summer birding season (September to April ), when the intra-African and Eurasian migratory settle in to breed.

Walking the Jordan Trail, Jordan (Shutterstock)

Walking the Jordan Trail, Jordan (Shutterstock)

If you’re looking for a challenge, the conditions for walking the Jordan Trail  are perfect in March. This is one of the great long-distance trails to emerge in recent years, and a fine way to explore a remarkable land.

Such is the trail ’s length (650km), the southern section tends to be better in late winter (February to March) while the north is better come springtime (March to April), as the winter cool starts to give way to the desert heat.

Of course, you don ’t   have to walk it all. If you’d prefer to chop up the trail into something more manageable, make sure to include the dark skies of Dana Biosphere Reserve, home to the Nubian ibex and abundant flora, as well as the ancient rock-cut Nabataean capital of Petra.

To the south, the Mars-like red sands of Wadi Rum and the final stretch over the Aqaba mountains to the coast are just as satisfying, whether you ’ve tackled the whole trial, or simply walked a few days.

19. Colombia

Hike to the lost city of Teyuna, Colombia (Shutterstock)

Hike to the lost city of Teyuna, Colombia (Shutterstock)

It’s not often you discover a lost city. March sees the tail-end of dry season (December to March) in northern Colombia , and if you’re going to make the five-day trek to the ruins of Teyuna (Ciu dad Perdida) , it’s the perfect time. After that, the mud and river crossings can become tricky.

Treks are always accompanied by a guide, but compared to, say, the more famous Inca trails of Peru, this route sees a fraction of their footfall. En route, you ’ll pass through Kogi villages and forests draped in liana, before finally arriving at the foot of the 1,200 steps leading up to the ruins of Teyuna, a jungle city of great mystery.

Teyuna was built in 700AD, but other than that, no one knows much about it. The city fell around the time of Spanish Conquest and only ‘re-emerged’ in the wider consciousness in the 1970s. Since then, it’s kept a low profile because of troubles in the region. But it’s safe these days and worth the sweat, with most travellers making their base in the city of Santa Marta.

The Best Places to Travel in the U.S. in March

march april best places to visit

In the same way that spring breaks eagerly through layers of snow and frost, travelers who have spent the winter at home are itching to burst outside — and onto the first flight out of town.

To help you find the absolute best places to travel in the United States this month, we looked at popular (and seriously underrated) annual events, noteworthy hotel and restaurant openings, sought out exceptional weather, and considered destinations on our list of the 50 Best Places to Travel in 2018 .

From picking wildflowers in Texas Hill Country to a deliciously rowdy bacon festival in North Dakota, this is a month for reawakening the senses, and for rediscovering some of America's most beautiful sights. Think: low-key golf resorts on the St. Petersburg coast, or the remote forests of Maine.

Whatever your preference, we've got the perfect trip to get you back on the road this March .

Waikiki, Hawaii

The food and cocktail scene in Honolulu has been off the charts lately, and this month, Hawaii's bustling capital is set to get even tastier with the opening of a new restaurant by celebrity chef Masaharu Morimoto . Located inside the newly opened Alohilani Resort, Morimoto Asia Waikiki will bolster the Iron Chef's Hawaiian presence with his signature Asian fusion dishes, including Peking duck, sticky ribs, Korean kalbi , and dim sum. Shortly after, the chef's Momosan Waikiki will open on the hotel's ground floor, with an all-day menu of noodles, gyoza, and yakitori.

Black Hills, South Dakota

Not many people associate end-of-winter travel with fat bike racing, but that's exactly what makes the annual 28 Below race in the Black Hills of South Dakota (home to Mount Rushmore) so unique. The event kicks off on March 17 in the town of Spearfish — a destination that's ideal for travelers with a taste for adventure — and the unspoiled landscape features snowy trails dotted with birch trees and two of the highest peaks east of the Rockies. When it's all over, you can cozy up with a mug of hot chocolate in an Old West-style cabin at Spearfish Canyon Lodge .

Las Vegas, Nevada

With a new zip line set to debut outside Caesar's Palace , 2018 promises plenty of excitement on The Strip. But it's United Airlines' decision to expand service between Las Vegas and west coast cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco that will have travelers booking their next adults-only weekend of mischief. With roundtrip fares as low as $132, the increased service means greater booking flexibility — and more spending money at the blackjack table.

Fargo, North Dakota

These days, everyone's a bacon connoisseur . But if you want to put your pork proficiency to the test, head to Fargo's annual Bacon & Beer Festival , which takes place at the Fargodome on March 10. While local chefs compete for approval with dozens of bacon dishes (attendees can also ride a mechanical pig), the event is a good excuse to explore some of the city's newest food and drink offerings, like Wild Terra , a new bar offering hard cider and kombucha on tap, and Wurst Bier Hall , which serves rattlesnake and rabbit bratwurst.

Yountville, California

Napa Valley is bouncing back strong after wildfires swept across wine country in October. With the exception of several estates that suffered significant damage, travelers can expect to enjoy the same rolling green hills and cozy tasting rooms they've come to know and love. And the region could use some love. At the Tuscan-inspired Napa Valley Lodge , a 55-room boutique hotel that opens onto the countryside, a brand new lobby will debut this month, with rustic Italian interiors and artwork by local artists.

Denver, Colorado

This month is a great time to wander around the wildly popular, European-style food hall known as The Source before the opening of a new 100-room hotel on the premises (also named The Source). Located in the heart of Denver's buzzy RiNo arts district, the multifaceted market is known for hosting various pop-up events and art exhibits. But the true draw is its 25 vendors, which include a taqueria, a sustainable butcher shop, a French bakery, craft brewery, and a florist.

Grand Island, Nebraska

There's a good chance you've gazed down on Nebraska's notorious flat farmlands during a cross-country flight. But this month, travelers to the 'Cornhusker State' should look up. Birdwatching is a little-known pleasure in central Nebraska, and in late March, more than 80 percent of the world's sandhill crane population (around 600,000 birds) converge on the Platte River . It's quite a sight to behold.

Fredericksburg, Texas

Wildflowers will be coming into bloom in Texas Hill Country this month, which is home to the nation's largest working wildflower farm . With the season extending from March all the way through April, it's a great opportunity to spend a weekend exploring country roads and hiking . For a well-deserved picnic break, stop in at Wildseed's wine tasting room , where you can sample Texas-made wine while overlooking fields of cosmos and zinnia.

Newfield, Maine

It's maple season in Maine, and fans of the sticky sweet pancake topper can plan a whole trip around the state's famous sugar houses . Scattered throughout the woods are small cabins, where farmers spend days boiling down raw tree sap to produce the beloved syrup (in 2016, Maine produced nearly 700,000 gallons of the stuff). The fourth Sunday in March (March 26) is designated as "Maine Maple Sunday," and it's your chance to visit the sugarhouses for free tastings. The sugar high alone should carry you well into spring.

Scottsdale, Arizona

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Scottsdale , known for its blissful desert sunshine and high-end resorts , is also home to the annual Major League Baseball spring training. Nearly two million fans show up at the end of February to watch 15 MLB teams prepare for the upcoming season under the warm Arizona sun. This month, Scottsdale welcomes players from the San Francisco Giants, Colorado Rockies, and Arizona Diamondbacks, with games taking place in 10 different stadiums . Once you've purchased tickets , consider making the most of your surroundings with an exhilarating hot air balloon ride , or a visit to the Desert Botanical Garden .

Niagara Falls, New York

Niagara Falls, New York prompted a new wave of tourism last December when they upgraded the famous waterfall with a brand new $4 million color LED lighting system. This month, the city unveils its new Underground Railroad Heritage Center , a compelling collection of exhibits that illustrate the region's role as an important border crossing for freedom seekers in the 19th century — all housed on the first floor of an 1863 post office.

Santa Barbara, California

In March, off the coast of Santa Barbara , travelers can enjoy prolonged sightings of the Pacific gray whale , which makes its yearly migration south to Baja California. (Meanwhile, humpback and blue whales tend to make their appearance during summer months.) The newly rebranded Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara sits oceanfront on 78 acres, meaning guests can relax on their private balcony with a glass of wine (pulled from the hotel's 12,000-bottle cellar) and catch glimpses of the graceful giants without even setting foot on a boat.

Raton, New Mexico

Just before summer hits, mild temperatures in March signal a sweet spot for outdoor adventurists in the rugged, beautiful state of New Mexico. While most travelers tend to focus on the always delightful Santa Fe , the shoulder season of March is ripe for venturing into more remote parts of the state, like Vermejo Park Ranch . The 585,000-acre private landscape — which has modern guesthouses and an opulent mansion that can be privately rented — guarantees quality time spent in the wilderness, whether it's hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing, or taking part in a wildlife photography tour.

Palm Harbor, Florida

Wedged near the top of the St. Petersburg coast, Innisbrook Golf Resort & Spa is a favorite hideout for private yacht owners, who can dock their boats nearby and head to the resort to enjoy the property's 11 clay tennis courts, six pools (including one with water slides), and 60 acres of fishing lakes. In March, Innisbrook is home to the PGA's annual Valspar Championship , when golf players from around the world compete on the resort's Copperhead course. The last three holes are considered among the most challenging holes in the sport.

Houston, Texas

If you have plans to pass through the Lonestar State this month (and are up for something a little different), head to the Houston Rodeo . The annual event consists of a 19-day tournament, during which hundreds of athletes compete in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, women's barrel racing, and other events. It culminates with a final Super Shootout event — and the grand prize amounts to more than $2 million. If you need a place to stay, the Inn at Dos Brisas , a gorgeous Spanish hacienda-style property managed by Relais & Châteaux, secures box seating for guests throughout the event.

March is an ideal time to travel because it’s the start of the shoulder season in many destinations. This means fewer crowds and more affordable prices compared to the peak season. However, it’s important to note that spring break falls during this month for many schools, which can cause prices to jump in certain destinations (like Mexico!)

March travel can involve a mix of weather conditions too. In some places, it may feel like the first signs of spring, with blooming flowers and milder temperatures. In others, you may experience cooler temperatures and changing leaves as autumn sets in.

Whether you’re a beach lover, a mountain enthusiast, or a city explorer, there’s something for everyone. As a seasoned traveler, I’ve explored many places during this month so here are some of my picks for the best places to visit in March!

Best Places to Visit in the USA during March

It’s a breathtaking sight to behold and one that draws crowds from all over the world.

Aside from the stunning cherry blossoms, the weather in Washington DC during March is mild, with temperatures averaging around 50-60°F (10-16°C). While it’s not quite warm enough to wear shorts and t-shirts, it’s still comfortable enough to explore the city without feeling too chilly.

Charleston, SC

If you’re a foodie or a wine lover, then Charleston, SC should be at the top of your list of places to visit in March.

The Charleston Food and Wine Festival takes place in mid-March and features over 100 events, including tastings, cooking demos, and wine seminars. It’s a chance to sample some of the best food and wine that the South has to offer, all while enjoying the city’s historic charm and beautiful weather.

In March, the temperatures are starting to warm up, and it’s the perfect time to explore the city’s cobblestone streets, historic homes, and picturesque waterfront. Plus, the crowds are smaller than in the peak summer months, so you can enjoy the city’s attractions without feeling too overwhelmed.

Aside from the food and wine festival, there are plenty of other things to do in Charleston in the spring. You can take a historic carriage ride tour , visit the city’s many art galleries, or take a sunset sail on the harbor. And of course, no trip to Charleston would be complete without sampling some of the city’s famous southern cuisine, like shrimp and grits or fried chicken.

Maui is known for its excellent surf spots, with some of the best waves in the world.
