Our group of six recently returned from a trip to Tanzania a week ago and I wanted to just give a brief review of the operator we went with for our climb, Mar Tours. This will not discuss the climb in detail, just our experience with Mar Tours.

Andrea and Sarah

Climbing Kilimanjaro was a trip of a lifetime for me and it was a daunting process to find a suitable tour guide company with a good rates and a good reputation. My friend and I found narrowed down Mar Tours and Safari by searching trip advisor

Completely agree with most of the information provided by Kyle on 25 June 2011. Feel like there should be a more recent review on this company because I know first hand how difficult it is to compare Kilimanjaro companies online from the other side of the world !

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a fantastic experience, and I would thoroughly recommend Mar Tours who are a local business run from Moshi offering good service and competitive prices. Job, who runs the business, was very responsive to all of our questions leading up to the trek.

mars tours tanzania

Hey, just got back from a trip to Tanzania a few weeks ago and I wanted to just give a brief review of the operator we went with for both our climb and the safari, Mar Tours. This will not discuss the climb or the safari itself in detail, just our experience with Mar Tours.

Let me begin by saying, I would highly recommend Mar Tours as an operator for both climbing Kilimanjaro and going on a safari. Being college students, we were primarily interested in finding a budget operator that did not compromise the quality of their services in order to reduce the cost of their trips. Mar Tours did exactly this as its excursions were relatively cheap in comparison to the other operators we looked at, and it provided excellent service.

During the planning process, our contact Job Baraka, was very quick in responding to emails and answered all off the questions we had with very detailed responses. Although they have the planned itineraries for the climbs on their website, he was very helpful in working with us to create our own itinerary for the safari based on where we wanted to go and spend the most time.

For the Kilimanjaro climb, the guides we had, Ramadhan and Manase, were fantastic. They made sure we drank lots of water and walked very slowly to help with acclimatization, and were constantly asking us how we were feeling to help make sure we were okay to proceed going up the mountain. Additionally, the food provided on the trek had a lot of variety to it, and we always had more than we could possibly eat. We noticed very few differences between the experience we had with a budget operator and the other people we met on the mountain who had gone with more expensive options.

Our experience with the safari was very similar to that of the climb, in that we were incredibly happy with the service Mar Tours provided. Our guide, Amadeus, seemed as interested in seeing all of the animals as we were, despite having been a guide for years. Often we were one of the first groups to begin our game drive in the morning and one of the last ones to return. The only thing I would have liked to have known beforehand is that we would have access to electricity and showers at the campsites in the national parks as my camera ended up dying early on the last day, though this is moreso an indicator that you should ask a lot of questions when going through planning a trip.

If you have any additional questions about Mar Tours, just respond to this post and I'll do my best to get back to you soon.

It would be nice to have an idea of the cost of the safari, lodging, campsites etc you used to give a comparison to others planning a similiar trip.

Very similar positive experience for us also with the trek and safari.

Hey, we just got back from Tanzania (March-2014). And I want to share our experience.

To secure the huts on Marangu Route, we had to pay a $200 deposit per person. It was only possible to pay via bank-transfer or Western Union, not via Credit Card. This made me sceptical, but it is the way it works in Tazania, and my concern was proven pointless.

Landing at Kilimanjaro Airport at 7:30 AM, we were picked up by Mar, driven to their office, paid the balance, loaded up on guides, porters, food and equipment and started from the Marangu Gate already at 11 AM. We couldn't have planned this any better.

Mar Tours is not the in the luxury segment, but they provided excellent service with friendly staff. As we are fairly experienced hikers we didn't need the close attention, but the guides were there at key stages. Great and varied food was provided throughout the hike. The 3 days up to Kibo Hut is fearly easy going. The hardship starts on the slope towards Gilman Point, and throughout this early morning we had close follow-up and great motivational encouragement, which was really required from our guides, Ramadhan and Manase, We had a fantastic sunrise over Mawenzi from Stella Point, but at this point I was most focused on digging deep to find strength to continue, and the guides really helped. We made it to Uhuru, and on the return we stopped at Gilmans Point where we measured our oxygen saturation. My wife and I only had a mere 51 and 49%, while the guides had 86 & 87%. Luckily we did not need close assistance on the way down, but we were assured from the readings that this was available if needed.

The next day we finalized the descent to Marangu Gate, and made it back exactly 96 hours after leaving the gate. We returned to Mar Tour office to pick up our "beach luggage" that they kindly stored before they took us back to the airport to fly to Zanzibar.

I would highly recommend Mar Tours as an operator for climbing Kilimanjaro. They are a flexible operator that did not compromise the quality or safety of the trip. Mar Tours delivered exactly what we wanted. Although they have the planned itineraries for the climbs on their website, Mar was very helpful in working with us to create an itinerary that maximized our time at Zanzibar given the short timeframe we had available.

Mar Tours were excellent and this has to be down to the fantastic guides Manese and Ramadhan who ensured we were always very well cared for. They insisted we walked slowly and as a result we avoided all altitude problems, they carried our bags when needed during the final climb and were extremely encouraging. Manese was very professional and held together a happy, close knit and well organised team. The food was excellent and there was always plenty, the porters always greeted us when we arrived to camps and the timings of the staff was exceptional. Everything was always on time. The trek was good value and I can't recommend Manese and Ramadhan enough. Mar tours is a great little agency and should have wider publicity!

I am climbing kill with mar tours in 2 weeks. Can you provide any last minute info or tips to help achieve success. I am in decent shape and had been doing as much training as possible, but do not live in a location with much elevation. I have read mixed reviews on the variability of the temp and weather while climbing. I was planning on renting a sleeping bag and jacket from mar tours and wondered if this would be warm enough. Some people seems to recommend warmer sleeping bags that what mars is rated 15-25 C. What is your opinion? Any suggestions for "must have" gear? Thanks in advance and thanks for a helpful review.

Tanzania is home to some of the most astounding natural wonders on the continent, including the renowned Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, the world-famous Serengeti National Park and the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater.

A multi-day tour may be the best option for several reasons. First, it enables you to get the most out of your trip by including more places and activities in a limited amount of time. The tour operator handles all the details so you can concentrate on enjoying the vacation rather than spending time organizing travel, lodging, and your itinerary.

Additionally, multi-day tours frequently include knowledgeable guides with vast knowledge of the places you’ll visit. They may provide information and opinions from the region that can help you better comprehend and appreciate the areas you visit.

Last but not least, multi-day trips frequently offer special access to certain places that are difficult for independent visitors to enjoy. These trips can provide genuine and immersive experiences that might be difficult to arrange on your own, whether they involve visiting unique places, participating in regional festivities, or interacting with local populations.

In conclusion, A multi-day tour provides comfort, knowledge, and connections with others. It enables you to make the most of your time and discover new places. A multi-day trip can be a terrific option for a heart-stopping adventure, whether you’re a solitary traveler, a group of friends, or a family.

With many national parks to explore and many different regions to see, including the island of Zanzibar, it cannot be easy to plan the logistics of everything.

It is also not exactly easy to get from park to park, so it’s quite important to make sure you not only have a knowledgeable guide to take you to each location but one that will give you information on the wildlife, landscape, and people of the region so you can learn a bit too. Traveling to Tanzania is both an exciting and breathtaking experience. So without further adieu, here is a look at the top six best tours in Tanzania.

TESTIMONIALS

mars tours tanzania

"Exceeded expectations in every area"

Ahsante successfully guided us to summit on Uhuru Peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro, using the Lemosho route in 7 days. Ahsante’s team was brilliant in every way. I’d highly recommend them. The guide was knowledgeable and delightful to spend time with. The food was excellent. Throughout the hike, we gathered the impression that the entire team was eager to see our success in summiting the mountain. This was shown in words of encouragement, and unexpected service–meeting us on the trail as we approached camp and accommodating small requests. We are also grateful for the office crew’s effort to help us coordinate COVID testing after the climb and before the international flight out of Tanzania. From booking to departure, Ahsante served us well.

Zanzibar Island holiday

Known as the Spice Island, the beautiful island of Zanzibar on Africa’s east coast is bursting with culture and history, seemingly at odds with its idyllic geography of white-sand beaches with palms swaying lazily in the sea breeze. Together this makes Zanzibar a fabulous place to explore as well as a dream to relax and unwind. Zanzibar is the semi-autonomous part of Tanzania in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 kilometres (16–31 mi) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba. The capital is Zanzibar City, located on the island of Unguja. Its historic centre is Stone Town, which is a World Heritage Site.
