PM Modi to visit Indonesia today: What’s on the agenda for the 24-hour trip?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant diplomatic visit to Indonesia this Wednesday evening. The visit, a tight 24-hour trip, culminates in his return to New Delhi on September 7 evening. The excursion to Jakarta is at the invitation of Indonesian President Joko Widodo and it comes as a precursor to India's hosting of the G20 Summit on September 9-10.

In Jakarta, PM Modi is expected to take part in two high-level summits on September 7 — the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit (EAS). In an accommodating gesture, Indonesia, which currently holds the chair of ASEAN, rearranged the summit schedules to allow for PM Modi's early departure.

This year's ASEAN Summit theme is "ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth", reflecting Indonesia's vision for the bloc as a key hub of economic development . These meetings will also serve as an avenue for India and its Southeast Asian counterparts to review their mutual progress and map out avenues for future collaboration, ANI reported.

It's worth noting that the 20th ASEAN-India Summit marks the first meeting of its kind since the relationship between the two parties was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022. These upgraded ties signify greater cooperation across various sectors, from trade to security.

The East Asia Summit is equally significant, giving India a platform alongside eight other dialogue partners and ASEAN nations to discuss issues of regional and global import. It's a stage for multilateral dialogue, a crucial component for maintaining stability and fostering cooperation in the Asian region.

A key focus of this visit will be economic cooperation. Just in August, ASEAN-India Economic Ministers gathered in Indonesia. Their primary agenda was a timely assessment of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement, initially inked in 2009. Both sides have committed to a quarterly negotiation schedule, aiming for a comprehensive review of the trade agreement by 2025.

PM Modi's forthcoming trip to Indonesia is not his first; he previously visited the country in 2018. At that time, both India and Indonesia upgraded their bilateral relationship, inaugurating a New Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

This pact aimed at elevating cooperation in multiple domains, setting the stage for what is today a flourishing diplomatic and economic relationship between the two nations.

PM Modi to make quick visit to Indonesia tomorrow for Asean-India Summit

In indonesia, pm modi will also attend the east asia summit, which brings together the 10 asean members and eight dialogue partners (australia, india, china, japan, south korea, new zealand, russia and the us.

NEW DELHI: Leaders of India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) will review their relations in areas ranging from maritime security to the digital economy and provide directions for future cooperation at a summit in Indonesia on September 7.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave for Indonesia during the night on September 6 and return to New Delhi late in the evening the following day (via REUTERS)

A new initiative on maritime security is expected to be among key outcomes of the Asean- India Summit to be held in Jakarta on Thursday, people familiar with the matter said. Days ahead of the G20 Summit in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making a brief visit to Indonesia to attend the India-Asean Summit and East Asia Summit.

Modi will leave for Indonesia during the night on September 6 and return to New Delhi late in the evening the following day. Indonesia, the current chair of Asean, made adjustments to the schedule for both summits to facilitate Modi’s early return. Officials said Modi will not hold any bilateral meetings on the margins of the two summits in view of his tight schedule.

This will be the first Asean- India Summit since the two sides elevated their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2022, and the focus since then has been on maritime security, cyber-security, digital economy and emerging areas of cooperation. An Asean-India defence ministers’ meeting was held last November and the two sides conducted their first maritime exercise in May.

The Asean Summit will be an opportunity for the leadership to review progress in relations and to provide further direction for cooperation, said Saurabh Kumar, secretary (East) in the external affairs ministry. The relationship with Asean is a central pillar of India’s Act East policy and the vision for the wider Indo-Pacific, he told a media briefing.

Both sides also share a similar vision for the Indo-Pacific and are committed to building on the synergy between Asean’s outlook on the Indo-Pacific and India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, Kumar said.

With India and Asean observing the 30th anniversary of their partnership in 2022, the Indian side has focused on increasing connectivity in the physical, digital and economic domains. India and Indonesia launched direct flights through two private airlines in August, and India has also started direct flights to Vietnam.

Following the linking of the real-time cross-border payment systems of India and Singapore in February, Kumar said the Indian side is “looking at ways to expand this to other Asean countries”.

India-Asean trade was worth $131.5 billion during 2022-23, with the 10-member bloc accounting for more than 11% of India’s total trade for the period. The two sides have also begun a review of the India-Asean trade in goods agreement to make it more friendly and trade facilitative, to enhance and diversify trade, and to address existing asymmetries. This review is expected to be completed by 2025, Kumar said.

The East Asia Summit, which brings together the 10 Asean members and eight dialogue partners (Australia, India, China, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Russia and the US), is a key mechanism for dialogue on strategic matters. Kumar said India is committed to strengthening this platform and making it more effective to deal with contemporary challenges.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be leaving for Jakarta, Indonesia, today (September 6) evening. He is visiting the country at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo.

During his visit, PM Modi is expected to attend the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and 18th East Asia Summit being hosted by Indonesia as the current Chair of ASEAN ( Association of Southeast Asian Nations). In a special gesture towards PM Modi, Indonesia rearranged the summit schedules to allow his early departure as he will be back on Thursday (September 7) owing to his tight schedule.

This year's ASEAN-India Summit will be the first Summit since the elevation of India-ASEAN relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022. The Summit will review the progress of India-ASEAN relations and will also set the future direction for the cooperation between them, said Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in a release.

The ASEAN Summit chaired by Indonesia will be hosted under the theme "ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth." This theme indicates that Indonesia expects the ASEAN to be relevant and significant as the centre of economic growth, reported the news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, the East Asia Summit would provide an opportunity for leaders of ASEAN countries and its eight dialogue partners (Australia, China, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Russia, and the United States), to exchange views on issues of regional and global significance.

Previously, in August, ASEAN-India Economic Ministers met in Indonesia, and the main agenda of this year's meeting was the timely review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA), signed in 2009. Rajesh Agrawal, Additional Secretary at the Department of Commerce in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, represented India at the 20th ASEAN-India Economic Ministers' meeting and co-chaired the meeting with Dr Zulkifli Hasan, Minister of Trade, Indonesia.

The Economic Ministers or their representatives from all the 10 ASEAN countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) participated in the August meeting.

With a focus on enhancing cooperation in trade and investment sectors as well as security and defence, relations between India and ASEAN have seen a significant improvement over the past few years.

Days before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to welcome global leaders for the G20 Summit in the capital New Delhi, he will make a quick visit to Indonesia for the Asean-India Summit.

Mr Modi will leave on Wednesday to attend the two-day gathering and the 18th East Asia Summit, aiming to boost maritime security co-operation between India and the Association of South-East Asian Nations.

The East Asia Summit is the foremost of the Asean-centred co-operation forums in the Indo-Pacific.

It plays a significant role in providing a platform for dialogue and discussion on matters of strategic importance to the 10 country bloc made up of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia, Thailand, Brunei, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

The Indian Prime Minister will hold summit talks with leaders in Jakarta in Indonesia, which is the current chair of the group, on Thursday.

The summit is special since it is the first to be held after the elevation of the India-Asean relationship to a strategic partnership.

The new relationship aims to deepen practical co-operation in areas including maritime, cyber security, digital economy, as well as in new and emerging areas, the Indian External Affairs Ministry said.

“During the summit, the Prime Minister will review the progress in Asean-India relations and provide them with further direction,” said ministry secretary Saurabh Kumar.

“India's relations with Asean are a central pillar of our Act East policy, as well as of India's vision of the wider Indo-Pacific.”

The Asean group was formed in 1967 with an aim of promoting peace and stability in the region that has over 600 million people, intending to accelerate economic, social and cultural development.

India is a dialogue partner of the group along with the US, China, Japan and Australia.

Mr Modi will return to New Delhi on Thursday.

India will host the global leaders including US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the weekend during the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Delhi.

The G20, comprising 19 countries and the EU, addresses major issues related to the global economy, financial stability , climate change mitigation and sustainable development.

New Delhi holds the presidency this year.

Mr Modi will also hold bilateral talks with Mr Biden on Friday, a day before the summit begins.

What PM Modi will get done during his 9-hour visit to Jakarta

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is busier than ever. He is in Jakarta today, where he will attend the ASEAN-India meet and East Asia Summit, before returning home the same evening. Next come bilateral talks with leaders of three countries including US president Joe Biden and then the big G20 Summit

What PM Modi will get done during his 9-hour visit to Jakarta

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working against the time and has much to get done before the G20 Summit. He is in Jakarta today, where he will attend the ASEAN-India meet and East Asia Summit, before returning home the same evening for key bilateral talks with the leaders of three countries on 8 September.

The PM will spend nine hours in Indonesia for back-to-back summits before returning in time to hold a bilateral meeting with US president Joe Biden ahead of the G20 Leadership Summit.  The Indian leader’s visit to Indonesia is one of his shortest-ever foreign trips. Let’s take a peek at the premier’s busy schedule ahead of the G20 Summit.

From Jakarta to New Delhi, PM’s power-packed schedule

Modi is having a busier-than-usual week. He participated in the meeting of council of ministers as well as the Cabinet on Wednesday. He held back-to-back meetings before leaving for Jakarta. He then flew to Jakarta on Wednesday night, spending about seven hours in the air before arriving at 3 am IST on 7 September.

In Jakarta, he left for the venue of ASEAN-India Summit at 7am IST and participated in the meeting. At 8.45am IST, he took part in the East Asia Summit, officials said. Immediately after the meeting, he will emplane for Delhi at 11.45am IST and land around 6.45pm IST on Thursday.

On Thursday, PM Modi will hold important bilateral meetings with three countries, which includes a meeting with US president Joe Biden.

Brief yet significant ASEAN visit

Modi stated that the comprehensive strategic cooperation between India and ASEAN has given new vigour to the group’s ties with New Delhi, in a parting statement issued ahead of his visit. During his discussions with the leaders of the grouping’s countries, he said he was looking forward to addressing the future of India’s partnership with the grouping’s members.

“I look forward to discussing with ASEAN leaders the future contours of our partnership, which has now entered its fourth decade. Engagement with ASEAN is an important pillar of India’s ‘Act East’ policy. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership entered into last year has injected new dynamism in our ties," he said.

The ASEAN-India Summit will be the first after relations between India and ASEAN were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022. The Summit will focus on the state of India-ASEAN relations and plan a course for future collaboration.

My remarks at the ASEAN-India Summit. https://t.co/OGpzOIKjIf — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) September 7, 2023

“Our focus has been on enhancing comprehensive connectivity with ASEAN in all aspects, including physical, digital, economic, and people-to-people. In August this year, India and Indonesia established direct flight connectivity through Indigo and Batik Air flights. We also have started direct flights with Vietnam,” said Secretary (East) Saurabh Kumar at a special media briefing here in New Delhi.

“Earlier in February, Prime Minister, along with his Singapore counterpart, launched the real-time cross-border payment link between UPI and Singapore’s Pay Now. We are looking at ways to expand this to other ASEAN countries," he added.

The 18th East Asia Summit

After the ASEAN-India Summit, the Prime Minister will attend the 18th East Asia Summit. “This forum provides a useful opportunity to deliberate on issues of importance to the region including food and energy security, environment, health, and digital transformation."

The East Asia Summit will provide a chance for ASEAN leaders and its eight dialogue partners, including India, to express their perspectives on regional and global concerns.

Along with Modi, the East Asian Summit will be attended by ASEAN leaders, US vice president Kamala Harris, Chinese premier Li Qiang, and Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov.

Modi’s visit to Indonesia comes ahead of the G20 Summit, which will be hosted in New Delhi on 9-10 September this year under India’s presidency. Indonesia is a member of the G20 ’troika’ as it had the presidency of the grouping last year.

Red carpets and yellow yoga mats: Five moments from Indian PM Modi's state visit

modi visit indonesia

WASHINGTON – For nearly a decade, Narendra Modi wasn’t allowed to set foot in the United States.

But times, titles and political agendas change.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden welcomed Modi, the prime minister of India, to the White House on Thursday for a state visit filled with the kind of pomp and pageantry afforded only to the nation’s closest friends.

Standing next to Modi on the White House South Lawn, Biden said he has long believed that the relationship between the United States and India will be “one of the defining relationships of the 21st century.”

Modi was denied a visa to enter the U.S. in 2005, when he was the chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat, over accusations that he had failed to stop deadly riots against minority Muslims. But now that he’s the leader of the world’s largest democracy, the Biden administration has been embracing him more closely as it seeks to counter China’s global influence.

Given Modi’s history with the U.S., there were bound to be some unusual, and even awkward, moments during his state visit:

Pomp and pageantry: Here's why Democrats and Republicans welcome a visit from right-wing Indian PM Narendra Modi

Red carpets and yellow yoga mats

Not many state visits start with yoga.

But Modi not only walked the red carpet, he stretched out on a yellow yoga mat.

Modi, a yoga enthusiast, and roughly 1,000 other practitioners of the Hindu spiritual and aesthetic discipline demonstrated their technique on Wednesday, Day One of Modi’s four-day visit to the United States.

The 72-year-old grey-bearded prime minister took his place on a mat on the grassy North Lawn area outside the United Nations headquarters in New York. For the next half hour, he practiced breathing exercises, meditation, backbends and other poses.

"Namaste," he told the crowd before the exercises began.

The event was held in recognition of the International Day of Yoga, which Modi persuaded the U.N. to observe annually not long after he became India’s leader in 2014. This year’s event set a Guinness World Record for most nationalities – 135 – at a yoga session.

Modi’s message to his fellow yoga enthusiasts: "Let's use the power of yoga, not only to be healthy, happy, but to be kind to ourselves and each other.”

Yoga diplomacy: Ahead of U.S. state visit, India's leader takes to his mat at the U.N.

The first lady and Modi take a field trip

The first couple of times the Bidens hosted a foreign dignitary for a state visit, Jill Biden arranged an outing with the leader’s spouse.

She took Brigitte Macron, wife of French President Emmanuel Macron , to the interactive Plant Word museum just a few blocks from the White House. Kim Keon Hee, wife of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, got a private tour of the National Gallery of Art.

But Modi’s spouse didn’t accompany him on the trip to Washington. What’s more, Joe Biden wasn’t in town for Modi’s arrival on Wednesday. He was traveling back to Washington from California, where he had been raising money for his reelection campaign.

So the first lady and the prime minister took a quick field trip to National Science Foundation in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside Washington, to highlight workforce training programs.

Modi, who arrived late, missed a demonstration of a robot creating abstract art on paper and another showing how an underwater robot can be used to aid fishing. But in brief remarks, he said his government has established labs in schools to encourage young entrepreneurs.

His goal, he said, is to make this decade a “tech decade.”

A plant-based feast

The night before the official state dinner, the Bidens hosted Modi for a private dinner at the White House, where they dined on a few of the president’s favorite foods, including pasta and ice cream.

The menu for the official state dinner on Thursday catered to Modi’s palate.

Modi is a vegetarian, so the 400 invited guests were served an entirely plant-based meal: A salad of marinated millet. Corn and compressed watermelon. Stuffed portobello mushrooms and saffron risotto. Strawberry shortcake infused with rose and cardamom.

The first lady enlisted the help of chef Nina Curtis, who specializes in plant-based cooking, to work with White House chefs to come up with the menu.

Guests were given the option of adding fish to the main course.

Modi (finally) meets the press

It’s not unusual for Biden to hold a joint news conference with foreign leaders when they visit the White House.

But when Modi took the dais in the White House East Room on Thursday for a Q&A with Biden, it was a remarkable turn of events.

Modi, who tries to avoid unscripted moments and has presided over a steady decline in press freedom in his country, has never held a solo news conference and often avoids questions by deferring to others on stage with him.

Biden and Modi each answered two questions – one from an Indian journalist who asked Modi about climate change, the other from a Wall Street Journal reporter who pressed him on human rights concerns. It was the first time Modi had fielded a question at a news conference since he came to power in 2014.

The news conference was a scaled-down affair compared with those usually held as part of a state visit. Even so, Modi’s advisers were far from thrilled with the idea. Administration officials advised his team that taking questions from the media was standard protocol for White House state visits.

Modi’s people finally relented and agreed to the news conference – but not until the day it was to be held.

'No space for discrimination': India's leader claims government doesn't have a human rights problem

'No space for discrimination' in India

Modi’s state visit infuriated human rights advocates who blame him for widespread attacks against India’s Muslims and other minorities.

Biden’s administration has accused India’s government of participating in unlawful and arbitrary killings, restricting freedom of speech and allowing violence against religious, racial and ethnic minorities. A group of more than 70 lawmakers asked Biden in a letter Tuesday to raise the human rights concerns during Modi’s visit.

But during his joint news conference with Biden, Modi insisted there was no discrimination in India and argued that democracy is in India’s DNA.

“Democracy is our spirit, democracy runs in our veins – we live democracy,” he said, speaking through an interpreter.

“There's absolutely no space for discrimination," he insisted, which must have been news to his detractors.

Why a sub-300 seat Modi in 2024 suits the West

T he US likes to work with pliant leaders in the Global South. The geostrategic challenge of the China-Russia axis occupies its full attention. The last thing Washington needs is an assertive Global South bloc converting a binary US-China contest into a triangular battle with Asian, African and South American countries converging on issues like climate change, trade and the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

For a number of years, the US-led West saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a leading member of a broad coalition of democracies stretching from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific.

That thinking has undergone a subtle change. Modi’s refusal to condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine was an early red flag. But India’s key role as a geopolitical counterweight to China was too important a factor for the West to ignore.

The West played along, supporting Modi’s initiative on critical technologies, joint naval exercises and regular invitations to G7 Summits of the world’s seven advanced economies.

For the West, China represents both a geostrategic and civilisational threat. The Cold War with the former Soviet Union was an ideological battle with another European power. Russia and its satellite states in eastern Europe were white, Christian nations.

With China, the new Cold War is ideological as well as civilisational. Communist China is neither white nor Christian. For Washington, Beijing represents a bigger long-term threat to 300 years of Western hegemony than the Soviet Union did.

Dismayed by India circumventing Western sanctions on Moscow, the West believes Modi may have acquired an exaggerated sense of self. It is no coincidence that Canada and the US coordinated allegations against Indian agents in the assassination of extremists in North America.

Watch: What MEA said about Canada arresting Indians

medium nocaptionhttps://youtu.be/fpWNiLK79KE?si=O1wfary_r8yaF84S

American analysts have concluded that Modi is likely to win a third consecutive term in the ongoing 2024 Lok Sabha election. But they would not be happy if he wins by a landslide.

Anything more than 320 seats for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would, they believe, embolden Modi to carve out an even more independent path from the West on critical issues like climate change and the Russia-Ukraine war. If, on the other hand, the BJP scrapes through with between 280 and 300 seats, Modi will be more accommodative towards the West.

American officials also know that an Opposition win, while improbable, would create a chaotic, unstable government reminiscent of the 1996-98 United Front.

Washington wants a partnership with a stable India. It can accept Modi-led India’s independent streak on key issues. But Washington and New Delhi recognise they need each other in a complex, fragmented world.

While the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was entrapping Indian businessman Nikhil Gupta in Prague in June 2023, US President Joe Biden was cheerfully hosting Modi to a state visit in Washington. Again, even as the FBI kept Gupta locked up in a Prague jail, the US kept the charge sheet against him under wraps so as not to cloud the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023 under India’s presidency.

West’s dilemma

Geopolitically, the West finds itself caught between a rock and a hard place. On one side is the dangerous China-Russia-Iran-North Korea axis. On the other is a restless confluence of independent nations from the Global South with India as the natural leader. It is the largest economy outside the big four (US, China, Germany and Japan). Its geography in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) makes it a critical cog in the West’s Indo-Pacific strategy.

When the Great Nicobar Island’s expanded naval base becomes operational, India will have military assets less than 160km from the tip of Indonesia, giving it a stranglehold over seaborne trade across the Malacca Strait.

Washington is also keenly aware of how the increasingly powerful Indian Navy intercepted pirate vessels attacking commercial ships, and rescued dozens of hostages on at least three occasions in the past two months.

With the US presidential election, due on November 5, still too close to call, Modi is keeping his cards close to his chest.

He has accepted Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s invitation to attend the G7 Summit near Turin on June 13-15. That suggests both the West and Modi have a good idea of who will be the prime minister after the Lok Sabha election results are declared on June 4.

Relatively low voter turnouts have, however, revived hope among Opposition bloc leaders that a miracle awaits India on June 4. Congress data analysts are predicting 150 seats for the BJP. (They had predicted 170 seats in 2019.) Sharad Pawar, leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), said: “Modi will get 240-250 seats, he isn’t coming back.”

For the West, a victory for Modi would actually be welcome. It will ensure stability and continuity at a time of two devastating wars and growing tensions with China. But the margin of the BJP’s victory will decide how Modi’s relationship with the West evolves.

A margin above 320 seats for the BJP and 350 seats for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will give Modi a powerful mandate to bring about sweeping changes in domestic and economic policy.

A clear runway of five years will enable Modi to prepare India for a larger global role as the country sprints towards a $7trn economy by the end of his putative third term in 2029, assuming an average annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 8% and an inflation deflator of 4% with a stable dollar-rupee exchange rate.

But if the combined Opposition can keep the BJP down to below 300 seats, there will be murmurs within the party about 2029. That is the best outcome the Opposition, bereft of its own ideas, can realistically wish for.
