The history of champagne in a maze of underground cellars.

Twitter icon

Moët & Chandon invites you to visit its wine cellars, the largest in the Champagne region. Discover endless underground galleries, filled with history, and round off your visit with a tasting of champagne!

The wine cellars of Moët & Chandon are located under the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. They are an exceptional part of the company’s heritage , and offer a unique chance to witness several centuries of champagne production. This treasure trove, the largest network of underground wine cellars in the Champagne region, preserves the memory of the talent and work of generations. Enter the 28 km of underground tunnels , the oldest of which dates back to the foundation of the company in 1743.

Dug from the colossal white chalk stone of the Champagne region, the tunnels spread across several levels under the city and provide the coolness and humidity necessary for the slow maturing of the famous bubbles . It’s in the calm of these underground cellars that Moët & Chandon champagnes develop their unique style , which is full, generous and dynamic in character.

In the half-light of this legendary underground labyrinth, explore the unique, intersecting tunnels!

Explore this legendary underground labyrinth and its numerous vaults. The bottles of the most famous vintages are kept well protected here. In the half-light, the guide leads the way through the intersecting tunnels, each slightly different from its neighbours.

Meet the wine experts , who will reveal the secrets of the making of Moët & Chandon wines and the heritage and craft which have been enriched and transferred across generations of wine-cellar masters. The wine-cellar visit ends with a champagne tasting session with the Moët & Chandon wine stewards, or sommeliers .

Magical receptions in a sumptuous setting

Moët & Chandon hosts all types of receptions in the sumptuous setting of its wine cellars. The Napoleon Vault offers a unique atmosphere in an exceptional location, and is ideal for gala dinners , cocktails, parties, etc. It’s a magical place in which Jean-Rémy Moët, the then mayor of Epernay, received the Croix de la Légion d’Honneur award from the hands of Napoleon , his friend and loyal client.

Above the wine cellars, in the magnificent Moët & Chandon vineyard , the nineteenth-century Orangerie opens onto an elegant garden, which is perfect for holding special events . The heart of champagne beats in these historic locations. An essential visit for wine enthusiasts!

How much is a Moet chandon guided tour?

If you would like to book a tour of Moët & Chandon you can easily do this by booking online . They offer two types of tours and these are the costs;

  • The Imperial moment tour is €35
  • The Iconic Traditional tour is €26 and includes a glass of our Moët Impérial
  • Under 18s are €11 with no wine tasting.
  • Children under 11 are free.

With many wine houses to visit Moët is a good place to start learning about the process of the Champagne making. We soon came to realise that the independent growers in Premier and Grand Cru villages also produce some fantastic wines. These Champagnes are very reasonably priced, plus you will have fun tasting them. We have since visited many others and sometimes a few in a day. I hope you look forward to seeing these insights. Stay tuned for more champagne tours.

Is Dom Perpignan part of Moet et Chandon?

Until the 1943 vintage, Dom Pérignon was produced from vintage Moët & Chandon Champagne. This was then transferred to the dom perignon style 18th century bottles to go in the cellar. Since them Dom perignon has been produced. From the 1947 vintage Dom Pérignon has been produced separately from the start.

  • Faith_and_Me 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great tour with great history and champagne We had a great tour with Raphael. His knowledge of the history of the area and of the various champagne houses was great. We started with a driving tour around Reims. We were then taken for a tour of the Notre Dame cathedral. Then off to Pommery champagne house which was really good. From there, off to Epernay, stopping at Dom Perignon’s tomb on the way. Epernay for lunch was really good after taking Raphaels’s recommendation for lunch. Then off to a small, exclusive producer who was just lovely. Tour of their underground cellars, then a tasting in his dining room in his own house. He was so lovely and accomodating and the champagne was wonderful! With generous pours and some brandy to finish off, it was just a really great finish to the tour. Read more Written March 29, 2023

Trip Summary

Based in Epernay, the wine capital of Champagne, this tour may just be the answer for those looking for an introduction to the unique Champagne Moet and Chandon.

After checking in at the 4* Hotel Jean Moët on the first day, you will be welcomed for an introductory tasting session of six Champagnes in a cosy wine bar in the historic centre of town.

Toward the end of the 18th Century, Jean-Remy Moët, grandson of founder Claude Moët, became famous as the man who introduced Champagne to the world. The important figures of the era, from the Marquise de Pompadour to Talleyrand to Napoléon quickly fell in love with the House’s effervescent wine. Moet and Chandon was soon the icon of success and elegance that it remains to this day. On day two of your Moet and Chandon tour, you will discover this when you take a short walk along the famous Avenue de Champagne, to reach Moet and Chandon, the largest and grandest Champagne House. Here, a guide will accompany you around the estate and through the extensive cellars. Your visit will conclude with two tastings of vintage Moët Champagnes.

Self-drive holidays France

Following your Moet and Chandon tour, you will be taken by a pre-booked and pre-paid taxi to the famous village of Hautvillers, the “cradle of Champagne”. As well as having time to admire the spectacular views across the vineyards and visit the Church where Dom Perignon is buried, a comparative tasting session of three single varietal Champagnes will take place in a quaint tasting boutique in the village. A light lunch of cheeses and gourmet local delicacies will also be served.

At the end of the tour, your taxi will take you back to Epernay, where the evening is free to do as you wish. We would be happy to suggest a restaurant for dinner.

As with all our tours, we can offer a whole range of exclusive visits and this itinerary can be completely tailor-made to suit your exact requirements. For example, you could dine as the estate’s private guests in the opulent dining room which welcomed Napoléon himself in years gone by. The perfect romantic evening or get together with friends and family.

At the end of the 18th century, Jean-Remy Moët, grandson of founder Claude Moët, became famous as the man who introduced champagne to the world.

The Marquise de Pompadour, mistress of King Louis XV of France, one of the most powerful women of her time, helped make Moët champagne the wine of choice throughout Europe’s royal courts. She used to say “Champagne is the only wine in the world that makes every woman beautiful.”

Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte loved Moët champagne. Moët Imperial was named after Napoleon. He visited Epernay numerous times. Napoleon and his troops invented the tradition of sabering open bottles of Moët to celebrate victory.

Since 1842, the House has released 74 vintage champagnes. The latest, 2009 and 2012.

TESTIMONIALS

Bordeaux - first class all the way.

“A special thank you to the Fine Vintage team for putting together such an unforgettable experience in Bordeaux! To give this trip a 10/10 would be a massive understatement as every aspect of the tour far exceeded my expectations. I was especially impressed with our host James Lawther as he has a wealth of knowledge of the Bordeaux region, which made the tour both entertaining and educational. My bucket list includes visiting every premium wine region of the world and I intend to do it with the Fine Vintage team – first class all the way! ”

KIMBERLY JURGILAS, TORONTO, ON

Spain - truly once in a lifetime experience.

“Visiting Spain impressed us on absolutely every level. It is a country that not only produces quality wine, it has the culinary merit to match alongside a stunning countryside making it a very desirable destination for wine, food, and art aficionados alike. Without question, Fine Vintage’s tour elevated our experience to a level we simply would not have been able to achieve on our own. Exclusive winery access, excellent food pairings, first-rate accommodation, and the incredible depth of knowledge of our guides resulted in a truly once in a lifetime experience. ”

ALLISON WALLACE, VANCOUVER, BC

Tuscany - the experience was all we could have asked for.

“My wife Karen and I were on the Tuscany tour in May. The experience was all we could have asked for. James and Filippo were excellent guides, combining very extensive knowledge of the region with plenty of humor and fun.  Several times they were able to add a personal touch to the tour, whether it was bringing us to Filippo’s village to enjoy food, music, and dance with his family and friends, or the visit from Sergio the world champion gelato maker. The tour had a good balance of scheduled events and free time. The accommodations were excellent, very comfortable and clean. The wineries we toured were top quality and it was a treat to visit some locations which we would not be able to see if we were on our own. Lastly, I must comment on the rest of the tour group. We were very pleased with the other members of the tour, who all seemed to enjoy each other’s company. It was certainly not a bus full of wine snobs. The group had lots of knowledge, but never let it get in the way of having a few laughs. We look forward to the next trip we can take with Fine Vintage!”

Moët & Chandon: 280 years of festive bubbles

moet chandon winery tour

Since it was founded in 1743, Moët & Chandon has continued to pass on exceptional winemaking expertise and to embody an innovative, pioneering spirit from generation to generation. Moët & Chandon has thus become an internationally renowned champagne brand, transforming this family business into a global symbol of success.

It’s said that every six seconds, someone in the world opens a bottle of Moët & Chandon . There’s no doubt about it: inseparable from the world of celebration, bottles of champagne from the French producer are particularly prized.

Moët & Chandon has been recognized for its expertise in inventing new ways to celebrate success with champagne. The first emblematic gestures associated with this sparkling beverage were born thanks to the Maison, such as the ritual of breaking a bottle at the christening of a new ship. From the cascades of champagne saluting victories on motor racing circuits to the impressive pyramids of flutes deployed around the world, all these symbols were created by Moët & Chandon. Today, the Moët & Chandon mini-flute and bottles adorned with Swarovski crystals have become must-haves at festive events.

moet chandon winery tour

Claude Moët , the company’s founder in 1743 , was the first to embody this spirit, transforming a prestigious regional wine into a sought-after and appreciated beverage. His grandson, Jean-Rémy Moët , who took over the business in 1792 , pioneered the internationalization of the brand beyond the old continent, rapidly transforming Moët & Chandon into a global symbol of celebration.

The vineyard extends over an impressive 1,190 hectares of rich limestone soil, 50% of which is classified as Grand Cru and 25% as Premier Cru, making it the largest vineyard in the Champagne region. Underground, Moët & Chandon’s cellars are the largest in the region. Stretching over a distance of more than 28 kilometers , they form a labyrinthine network where the wine evolves and transforms under ideal conditions of temperature and humidity.

A house steeped in history

Did you know that Moët Imperial, the House’s emblematic champagne, owes its name to Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte ? Napoleon Bonaparte visited the Moët & Chandon estates in Épernay on numerous occasions, and honored Jean-Rémy Moët with the Légion d’Honneur, France’s highest honor. Legend has it that Napoleon and his troops began the tradition of sabering bottles of Moët champagne to celebrate their victories.

moet chandon winery tour

“I can’t live without champagne; if I win, I deserve it; if I lose, I need it”, declared Napoleon.

Épernay’s strategic position on the eastern route linking Paris to major German, Austro-Hungarian and even Russian cities undoubtedly played a crucial role in the company’s commercial success. But this was not the only factor. Jean-Rémy Moët demonstrated exceptional strategic intuition and commercial talent. Accounting records reveal the first order placed by Napoleon Bonaparte, then First Consul of Paris, on 27 Thermidor An 9 (August 15, 1801), followed by a second order in 1803. With Napoleon Bonaparte’s accession to the title of Emperor in 1804, the accounting records then record “9 shipments to the Emperor and his family”. Napoleon was thus a loyal and regular Moët customer, right up to his exile and beyond.

These links between the great history of France and the little history of champagne once prompted Talleyrand to say: “My dear Monsieur Jean-Rémy Moët, you are predestined for the future. I declare that, thanks to this glass and its contents, your name will foam longer and better than ours.”

Moët & Chandon Grand Day and Effervescence evenings

To celebrate champagne, conviviality and joie de vivre, Moët & Chandon organizes annual events that bring together a host of celebrities. These are the “Grand Day” and “Effervescence” evenings, which take place during the festive season in the four corners of the globe, stopping off in some twenty cities including London, Paris, Mexico City, Johannesburg, Moscow, Hong Kong, Stockholm, Antwerp, Amsterdam and Singapore . These worldwide celebrations invite friends of the Champagne House to recall Moët’s “savoir-fête”.

moet chandon winery tour

For Grand Day 2019, Moët & Chandon had invited friends and guests of the Champagne House to raise their glasses in a global toast celebrating the 150th anniversary of Moët Impérial , a global icon of celebration since 1869. This annual tradition, initiated in 2016, continues to honor this epic with a festive program featuring a series of events dedicated to celebrating Moët Impérial. The Brut Impérial cuvée features a blend aged for more than 22 months, giving it a creamier texture and warmer aromas, notably of pear and candied yellow fruit, than its previous versions. A touch of bitterness at the end of tasting pleasantly titillates the taste buds, while preserving the balance that characterizes this champagne, which is less conventional than in the past. For the world’s most widely produced and marketed cuvée, this is quite an achievement.

The “Effervescence” evenings feature a golden ambience and a series of festive events, including retail experiences in the host cities. In addition, these celebrations encourage raising a glass for a good cause through their “Toast For A Cause” program, where all proceeds are donated to charity. In 2022, Moët continued its collaboration with The Sapphire Project for the second year running.

More recently, at the end of 2022, on the occasion of Moët & Chandon’s 280th anniversary, the “Effervescence” evening was held at the Palais Brongniart in Paris. Guests included celebrities such as Jessica Chastain, Emily Ratajkowski, Sienna Miller and Michaela Coel . True to its festive spirit, the Maison also welcomed Belgian singer Angèle, disco icon Gloria Gaynor and DJ Kungs. Celebrities such as Roger Federer, Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel and Naomi Harris also accepted the invitation to taste Chef Yannick Alleno’s culinary creations, accompanied by Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage 2004.

“The festive season is an important and meaningful time for our House – a time for celebration, sharing with loved ones and generosity. We are honored to bring the values of the world’s most loved champagne to iconic cities,” said Berta de Pablos-Barbier , President & CEO of Moët & Chandon.

Moët & Chandon x Daniel Arsham

To mark its 280th anniversary , Moët & Chandon unveiled a brand-new cuvée and collaborated with contemporary artist Daniel Arsham to create a work of art and a collection of bottles inspired by the champagne house’s heritage.

Entitled “Collection Impériale Création No. 1” , Moët & Chandon’s new creation reflects the House’s concept of “haute œnologie”. Complexity, elegance and preciousness are the watchwords of this champagne, which is based on a blend of three grape varieties from seven different vintages, with each grape meticulously selected and matured in specific environments to magnify its unique qualities.

Famous for his sculptures blending urban art and antique style, Daniel Arsham drew inspiration from Moët & Chandon’s heritage for this collaboration. He chose to celebrate the stained-glass windows created by glass painter Félix Gaudin , which have adorned the cellar of the Maison’s Épernay estate since the late 1890s. His three-metre-long sculptural work will be on permanent display in Moët & Chandon’s Galerie Impériale, close to the original stained-glass window.

At the same time, the artist has also designed 85 limited-edition bottles . These bottles, created in 3D and clad entirely in white, elegantly evoke the design of the stained glass windows, while subtly incorporating references to Château de Saran, owned by Moët & Chandon since 1801.

“We created the Collection Impériale Création No. 1, launched for our 280th anniversary, by imagining a champagne designed for eternity: it’s our special relationship with time to grow, select and age champagne that makes Daniel Arsham’s choice so relevant. Daniel’s unique approach to Moët & Chandon’s heritage beautifully captures the essence of our history and our craft,” says Benoît Gouez , the house’s cellar master in a press release.

A Sommelier Ranked 21 Sparkling Rosé Wines From Worst To Best

Bottles of sparkling rose wine

Sparkling rosé is a refreshing, bubbly wine. It can be fun and light, like your favorite pink prosecco, or complex and highly gastronomic, like a well-aged bottle of Champagne. Today, an increasing number of wineries are offering sparkling rosé wines, producing a range of styles hoping to lure the attention of consumers.

However, just as not all types of sparkling wine are alike, not all bottles of sparkling rosé are the same, either. Some brands employ the production method traditionally used for Champagne — allowing the secondary fermentation to create bubbles inside the bottle — while other sparkling rosé producers utilize a tank. Though production styles can vary, the overall product should deliver on the expectations of providing lively bubbles with balance, structure, and style.

With so many sparkling rosé wine bottles on the market, I decided to rank some prominent brands of this bubbly wine. After compiling a list of 21 sparkling rosé wine brands, I ranked the selected entries based on a variety of factors, including authenticity, production style, provenance, and value (among others). I also conducted firsthand taste tests of each bottle — guided by my experience as a Certified Sommelier — to determine the top sparkling rosé wine brand.

Some recommendations are based on first-hand impressions of promotional materials and products provided by the manufacturer/distributor/etc.

21. LXL Aphrodise

LXL Aphrodise is the creation of tech entrepreneur turned winemaker Frank Shilling and his partner, Gabi Petrylaite. Launched in 2022, the duo's xinomavro-based sparkling rosé wine from Greece markets itself as a luxury sparkling wine perfect for sipping poolside with friends. While we appreciate the frivolity that Aphrodise hopes to evoke, this sparkling rosé lacks greater nuance.

Though the brand states there's "low residual sugar" in its sparkling rosé, the 18.3 grams of residual sugar per liter designate the wine as off-dry. Unfortunately, it lacks the necessary freshness to balance the noticeable candied sweetness, so this brand ranks below the other brands.

20. Halter Ranch

Produced at the expansive Halter Ranch estate in Paso Robles, California, Halter Ranch Winery crafts refined wines from 100% certified organic vineyards. Taking a hands-off approach to allow the terroir to speak through the wines, Halter Ranch crafts its Effervescent Rosé from grenache, picpoul blanc, and mourvédre grapes.

The result is a dry sparkling rosé with layers of ripe berries, melon, papaya, and apricot. However, the wine lacks the vibrancy that thousands of dancing bubbles bring to a glass of sparkling rosé. The wine's subtle fizz of natural CO2 quickly dissipates, which places this sparkling rosé wine brand at second-to-last.

19. Santa Margherita

Italy's Santa Margherita Sparkling Rosé blends glera grapes with chardonnay and a splash of malbec. Santa Margherita also uses the Charmat production method, where the wine transforms into sparkling rosé inside a pressurized tank, generating bubbles. It is bottled after six months of aging, delivering freshness with fruit-froward characteristics.

Now, this sparkling rosé may be a fine example of why sparkling wine and brunch are a match made in heaven , as it easily pairs with eggs benedict, a vegetable frittata, or a pile of chicken and waffles. Unfortunately, it doesn't really distinguish itself in a significant way from other sparkling rosé options. Since this brand tends to cost much more than the Kirkland Signature Rosé Prosecco ranked just above it, Santa Margherita comes near the bottom of sparkling rosé wines.

18. Kirkland Signature

One of the many reasons to love Costco is the wholesaler's store brand Kirkland Signature wines. Though its products come from some of the most sought-after regions in the world and are generally well-made, Kirkland Signature wines are eminently affordable. This includes its Kirkland Signature Rosé Prosecco, which may cost you less than $10 (depending on the location).

This glera and pinot noir-based sparkling rosé is red fruit-forward and approachable — even with 12 to 17 grams per liter of sugar — and has enough acidity to ensure balance. Costco's option isn't overly sophisticated by any means, which is why it places near the bottom. But it's certainly drinkable, especially for such a low price.

VARA is a different kind of American winery. Based in New Mexico, the winery crafts its products from fruit grown throughout America and Spain under the direction of a team of industry veterans, including well-regarded winemakers Bob Lindquist and Laurent Gruet. VARA's American Silverhead Brut Rosado is crafted from an unlikely combination of syrah grown in the state of Washington with chardonnay to create this unique sparkling rosé.

With a lively effervescence, this wine has bright acidity and fruit-forward flavors of nectarine, strawberry, and quince. It may rank in the bottom half, but its lower placement is more of a reflection of the higher-ranked sparkling rosé wine brands rather than a knock on VARA. In that sense, it's a relatively solid choice — even if it's not the most intricate or complex sparkling rosé I've encountered.

16. Chandon California

Sister winery to the famed Moët & Chandon Champagne house, Chandon California began in Napa Valley in 1973. The winery produces a broad portfolio of sparkling wines in various styles that suit a wide range of palates from dry to sweet selections — like its brut rosé. Chandon's Brut Rosé blends chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier grapes that are sourced from throughout California and ages 12 months en tirage (or in the bottle) after the completion of secondary fermentation.

By and large, this sparkler is a fine example of California sparkling wine. The aging lends a subtle yeastiness that melds with cranberry, raspberry, and tangerine. Then again, this brut rosé isn't distinct enough to rank any higher given the quality of sparkling rosé wine brands on this list. Consequently, it places just above the Vara and Kirkland options.

15. Vilarnau

The beauty of cava is that its production method is similar to the wines of Champagne. However, a significant difference between cava and Champagne  is that cava generally costs a fraction of what the French charge for its prestigious bubbles. This means the Brut Reserva Rosé Delicat Organic from Vilarnau is much more affordable than a Champagne counterpart.

Vilarnau crafts 100% organic cava from vineyards within DO Penedès in Spain. Its Brut Reserva Rosé Delicat Organic combines garnacha and pinot noir that's aged for 15 months in the bottle. The time in the bottle lends texture and creaminess to the red berries and wildflower-filled wine, making this a well-balanced, approachable cava. Unfortunately, it didn't stand out much from the crowd during my taste test, and I couldn't place this admittedly decent sparkling rosé wine above the higher-ranked brands.

14. Lucien Albrecht

Maison Lucien Albrecht is one of France's leading producers of quality sparkling Crémant d'Alsace wines. Lucien Albrecht Brut Rosé utilizes 100% hand-harvested pinot noir fruit grown in rocky, mineral-rich hillside vineyards within the southern Alsace region, which gives a note of crushed stone to this effervescent wine.

Opening with a frothy, lively mousse, this sparkling rosé wine is approachable, showing crisp freshness and flavors of red fruits and wild herbs that are food-friendly and tasty. While not the most complex offering in the selections I tried — hence, its place in the ranking — this sparkling rosé is still enjoyable, so it comes in the middle of this list.

13. J Vineyards & Winery

J Vineyards & Winery showcases Russian River Valley wine's unique terroir and biodiversity. Under the direction of winemaker Nicole Hitchcock, J crafts sparkling wines with authentic character using a traditional method of production, including a brut rosé sparkling wine.

J Russian River Valley Brut Rosé opens with aromas of candied red fruits, blanched almonds, and wildflowers. This is followed by a palate rich with nectarines, ripe berries, and a note of crushed stone minerality. This sparkling rosé is refreshing, bright, and balanced, and pairs nicely with summer salads, roasted salmon , or light pasta dishes. J Vineyards & Winery may rank in the middle of the pack, but it's a solid sparkling rosé wine brand you'll likely enjoy.

12. Graham Beck

The name Methode Cap Classique was adopted in South Africa for making traditional sparkling wine when France made it illegal to use the term Champagne on bottles outside the nation. With that in mind, Graham Beck is a pioneer in Cap Classique (or South Africa's sparkling wine) production, so it's no surprise the brand sells a variety of delicious sparkling rosé wines made with that method.

This well-regarded winery produces a range of well-made sparkling rosé wines, helping it place in the middle of these rankings. For its Brut Rosé, Graham Beck presses and ferments chardonnay and pinot noir fruit together. The wine opens with a zesty mousse of bubbles, followed by notes of crushed stone, wild berries, and woody herbs. It has a lovely rusticity and a well-structured palate; unfortunately, the higher-ranked sparkling rosé wine brands were just that much better.

Argyle is a signature producer of Willamette Valley wines . It began in 1987 when Texas native Rollin Soles began crafting traditional method sparkling wines in Willamette's Dundee Hills. Today, the winery crafts still and sparkling wines from fruit grown throughout the valley by winemaker Nate Klostermann.

The brand's sparkling wines reveal structured complexity with a well-rounded mouthfeel, particularly Argyle's extended tirage sparklers that age in the bottle on the lees for an extended time. This gives a concentrated richness to the palate, which is evident in its sparkling rosé. Argyle's Vintage Brut Rosé shows tangerine, red berry, and marzipan, and would pair perfectly with our citrus almond tart . It may just miss the top tier, but the sparkling wine's flavor and the winery's refined production methods help earn this sparkling rosé wine brand a well-placed ranking overall.

10. Langlois

Langlois Château Crémant de Loire is a delicate, cabernet franc-based, traditional method sparkling wine from certified Terra Vitis (Sustainable Viticulture) vineyards in the Loire Valley of France. With a salmon-colored hue, its brut rosé's mousse of fine bubbles caresses the palate, delivering an elegant mouthfeel that's easy to get lost in. It's the type of sparkling rosé that pairs well with a summer vegetable salad with jasmine rice .

This wine opens with the classic characteristics of cabernet franc, including fragrant purple flowers and soft herbs, leading to red fruit flavors. It's an appealing wine from responsibly farmed vineyards, which helps it rank in the middle of this list.

9. Bricoleur

Russian River Valley's Bricoleur Vineyards is a relatively new brand on the scene, founded in 2020. However, the winery has quickly made its presence known, producing delicious, well-crafted wines, including its Isla Rosé Brut Rosé. Made from sustainably grown pinot noir and chardonnay fruit, this sparkling wine is refreshing and highly quaffable with a lively mousse and fruity flavors of white peach, melon, and brioche.

Taking on the Sip with Purpose motto, a portion of every bottle of brut rosé sold is donated to the V Foundation for cancer research. Since I love enjoying a tasty bottle of a well-produced and luscious sparkling rosé while also giving back, Bricoleur earns high marks.

8. Goldeneye

Goldeneye captures rugged Anderson Valley's alluring rusticity, creating character-driven cool-climate wines. Utilizing the traditional method of production, Goldeneye Brut Rosé sparkling wine blends chardonnay and pinot noir grown throughout the far-northern California area to create a multidimensional, multi-layered sparkling wine with structure, freshness, and balance.

Two years of bottle aging en tirage gives this sparkler a nutty, yeasty note that marries with red fruits, ripe citrus, and crushed stone minerality. A hint of saline is also present thanks to the influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean. Goldeneye's brut rosé highlights the importance of the terroir in winemaking and boosts its place among sparkling rosé wine brands.

7. Château de Bligny

Château de Bligny's story began in 1773 when its fruit was used to make still wine. Fast forward to 1999 when — after years of wartime, vineyard disease, and hardship — the Château experienced a rebirth, and its entire harvest began producing fine Champagne, like its Grande Rosé variety. Today, the brand's mineral-rich vineyards are certified Haute Valeur Environnemental (or of High Environmental Value), meeting strict criteria of working with sustainability and biodiversity.

Of course, Château doesn't just place well on this list because of its environmental awareness. The Grande Rosé Champagne blends predominantly chardonnay and pinot noir grapes to create an elegant, luscious wine with ripe strawberry, raspberry cream, and red cherry. As a result, it places above other impressive options.

6. Berlucchi

In 1961, three Italian friends set out to change the narrative of Italian sparkling wine by helping create the wine category known as Franciacorta. Franciacorta is from Italy's Lombardy region, using the traditional method of production with grape varieties of Champagne hoping to produce wines that rivaled the French region. Since Berlucchi was one of the pioneers of this style, it's no surprise its Franciacorta 61 Rosé is a top-notch sparkling rosé option — even if it doesn't crack the top five.

The Franciacorta 61 Rosé displays fruit-forward qualities balanced with yeasty baked bread, crushed stone, and a low dosage. Berlucchi also maintains a focus on sustainability, so this sparkling rosé wine brand deserves praise.

5. Moët & Chandon

The historic Moët & Chandon Champagne house produces a range of rosé wine options. Each offers a different way to enjoy Moët, from pouring it over ice to the gastronomic Grand Vintage Rosé (which would pair well with rich duck confit ).

Like Moët & Chandon Impérial Brut , the Methode Champenoise-style Rosé Impérial Brut Champagne blend of pinot noir, pinot meunier, and chardonnay includes a portion of reserve wine to maintain a house-style. This delivers a nice balance of fruit with acidity. Additionally, the winery's commitment to working sustainably helps it earn additional points. Between Moët's classic style, high quality, and environmental focus, it earns a high ranking among this list of sparkling rosé wine brands.

4. Domaine Carneros

When Taittinger Champagne looked outside France to establish a new sparkling wine house, it settled on the rolling hills of Carneros in Napa Valley. After establishing Domaine Carneros in 1987, it became a premier California sparkling wine producer under the leadership of founding winemaker Eileen Crane. Today, Domaine Carneros is known for graceful, elegant wines, as is evident with its brut rosé.

The vintage-dated sparkling wine comes from small plots of sustainably grown estate chardonnay and pinot noir fruit. Its production occurs in the winery's eco-friendly facility, much of which runs on solar energy. Though fruit-forward and succulent — layering fresh peaches, berries, and cream — this sparkling rosé has minimal additional sugars, showing a dry, expressive palate. The environment-friendly commitment and high quality give the brand a boost, and it undoubtedly belongs among the top contenders.

Maison Ruinart was the world's first Champagne house. Established in 1729, it's been crafting and shipping rosé Champagne since 1764. Today, it focuses on sustainability to fight the effects of climate change, reducing its carbon footprint while improving biodiversity in the vineyard — and it still makes a great sparkling rosé.

Ruinart Brut Rosé blends chardonnay and pinot noir fruit from 30 to 40 different crus (premium vineyard plots) with up to 30% reserve wine — ensuring the house style remains intact. The wine ages for at least two years in bottle, exceeding the minimum 15 months required by French law for non-vintage Champagne. Initial impressions of this wine are strong, showing a velvety palate rich with wild cherry, pastry cream, and candied fruit. Though mostly delightful, the overall mouthfeel was slightly less complex than our top two options.

2. Billecart-Salmon

The iconic Billecart-Salmon Champagne house grew from the marriage of Nicolas François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon in 1818 — and it remains owned by the Billecart family more than two centuries later. Embracing modernity and working sustainably while maintaining traditions has kept Billecart-Salmon in high regard for years. Unsurprisingly, its rosé brut Champagne is a fantastic sparkling wine.

The Billecart-Salmon Rosé Brut Champagne opens with an airy, delicate mousse that leads to a silky palate of citrus, clotted cream, and wild red berries. Three years of bottle aging gives the wine texture, enhancing its complexity and delivering a full-bodied, satiny palate that lingers. The fact that Billecart-Salmon uses a long, cool fermentation method is evident in the richness of this sparkling wine. It may come in second place, but it's a phenomenal sparkling rosé wine brand nonetheless.

1. Veuve Clicquot

Carrying out the pioneering work of visionary Barbe Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin, Veuve Clicquot embodies the essence of quality in each of its Champagnes. Madame Clicquot is credited with producing the first vintage Champagne in 1810, creating the riddling rack to clarify Champagne, and was one of the first to produce a rosé Champagne – helping change the industry's landscape. The winery continues to define excellence in the 21st century, and its brut rosé Champagne is a prime example of why it's the number one-ranked sparkling rosé wine brand.

Veuve Clicquot brut rosé Champagne uses fruit from up to 60 different vineyard plots and includes up to 45% reserve from previous years. Three years of bottle aging ensures the palate has a silkiness with a finish that lingers. The result is a wonderfully complex, luscious wine with richness, history, and pedigree. Consequently, this sparkling rosé wine brand easily tops this list.

Methodology

To create this ranking, I pulled from a selection of well-known sparkling rosé wine brands, along with unique, smaller-production options. Using my 20 years of experience as a trained sommelier and certified specialist in wine, I then tested and ranked each sparkling rosé based on several factors, including the wine's provenance, complexity, balance, taste, value, and overall style. The opinions and recommendations are based on my experience tasting and sampling these sparkling rosé wines, which were guided by my professional and personal knowledge.

Moët backs robots to manage vineyards in champagne.

A partnership has been announced today between Moët & Chandon and a viticulture tech company called Yanmar to advance robotic vineyard management in Champagne.

moet chandon winery tour

The tie-up sees the two companies work together to develop the YV01 autonomous robot, which is a self-driving vineyard sprayer guided by Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS that can operate on slopes up to 45 degrees.

The robotic ‘tractor’ has been developed by Yanmar Vineyard Solutions, which is an Epernay-based viticultural arm of Japan’s Yanmar – an agricultural machinery maker.

According to Yanmar, the collaboration with Moët & Chandon started in 2019 with an “autonomous machine concept” at a time when the wine industry was beginning to explore the potential of robotic vineyard assistance.

At this early stage, Moët & Chandon worked with Yanmar on the specifications for a machine that could handle challenging plots with steep and lateral slopes, leading to the launch of a prototype YV01 in 2021.

The machine was first tested on a Comité Champagne plot to ensure it met the appellation’s specifications, before being released to Moët & Chandon.

Following these tests, in early 2022, Moët & Chandon “undertook extensive trials” with two YV01 machines on some of their most demanding plots to test the robotic sprayers’ performance under real-life conditions. It also marked the start of a training program to teach staff new ways of working in steep areas.

By the end of 2022, Moët & Chandon confirmed their intention to operate the YV01 in “challenging” vineyard plots in Aÿ and Cramant.

Having performed well, Yanmar Vineyard Solutions and Moët & Chandon started the development of a new weeder tool in 2023, which has been available for sale since January this year.

The robots come with petrol and electric power, and move at speeds up to 4km/hr (see video below), with Moët’s version equipped with “an efficient petrol engine that gives it several hours of uninterrupted operation”.

According to Nikkei Asia , the robotic sprayers cost around £130,000, and Yanmar plans to take the tech to the US – a market where rival manufacturer Kubota is setting its sights, having enlisted Tesla co-founder and engineer Ian Wright to develop farming robots controlled by artificial intelligence.

Moët & Chandon is focused on more sustainable ways of managing its vineyards in Champagne, adopting regenerative viticulture , while trialling vitiforestry , and the use of sheep to control vineyard weeds .
