Welcome to the rugged and captivating island of Molokai, Hawaii, where nature's grandeur reaches astonishing heights. Nestled within the Pacific Ocean, Molokai boasts an awe-inspiring wonder that stands as a testament to geological marvels - the world's tallest sea cliffs. In this immersive journey, we will delve into the captivating allure of Molokai's sea cliffs, taking you on a virtual tour of their majestic beauty, historical significance, and the adventures that await those daring enough to explore their towering heights.

Molokai's Magnificent Sea Cliffs

Stretching along Molokai's northern coast, the majestic sea cliffs have long been regarded as a natural wonder. Carved by millennia of erosion and volcanic activity, these colossal cliffs rise dramatically, towering up to 3,600 feet above the Pacific Ocean. As you approach the island by air or sea, the sheer magnitude of these cliffs will leave you spellbound. The sight is truly an unforgettable experience, stirring the soul and igniting a yearning to explore their secrets.

Beyond their impressive stature, the cliffs hold a sense of mystery and magic that has captivated the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Known as the "Pali Coast," these towering cliffs offer a serene and almost spiritual ambiance, where time seems to stand still. The Pali Coast's allure has been celebrated in Hawaiian folklore, songs, and legends, deepening the connection between the people and the land.

Understanding the geological forces that shaped Molokai's sea cliffs is crucial to appreciating their splendor fully. The cliffs were formed over millions of years through a combination of volcanic activity and coastal erosion. Molokai itself was created by two ancient volcanoes, and as the island emerged from the depths of the ocean, the relentless power of wind, waves, and rain began to carve out its defining features.

The eastern part of the island showcases the most dramatic cliffs, where the relentless onslaught of the Pacific has steadily eroded the lava flows, sculpting and revealing the striking vertical faces we see today. The combination of softer, older rock layers with harder, younger layers has contributed to the cliffs' unique appearance, with a stark contrast between the verdant greenery and the raw, rugged rocks.

In addition to their geological significance, the sea cliffs have also played a vital role in scientific research. Geologists and biologists study these cliffs to gain insights into the island's ancient history and the diverse ecosystem that thrives within its folds.

The Pali Coast stands as the crowning jewel of Molokai's sea cliffs, a magnificent stretch of coastline that commands respect and reverence. Accessible only by sea, air, or an arduous hike, this remote and untouched region offers a glimpse into the raw beauty of nature. As you sail along its shores or gaze down from a helicopter, the sight of these imposing cliffs will leave you in awe. Their rugged facade serves as a fortress guarding the island's secrets, evoking a sense of wonder about the forces of nature that shaped them over eons.

The Pali Coast's isolation has preserved its pristine landscapes, teeming with diverse wildlife and native flora. Seabirds soar overhead, nesting in the cliffside, while native plants and ferns cling to the rock faces, defying gravity. Exploring the Pali Coast is like stepping into a living museum of natural history, where the untouched splendor of the Hawaiian wilderness takes center stage.

The World's Tallest Sea Cliffs on Molokai

Rich History and Cultural Significance of Molokai's Cliffs

Beyond their geological and natural significance, Molokai's sea cliffs carry profound cultural and historical importance for the Hawaiian people. Throughout generations, the cliffs have served as more than just a breathtaking landscape; they hold stories, legends, and sacred sites that connect the past to the present.

In Hawaiian folklore, the cliffs are believed to be inhabited by ancestral spirits, guardians of the island. The native Hawaiians consider these cliffs to be places of immense spiritual power, where the mana (divine energy) is palpable. Ancient chants and rituals were performed here, honoring the land's deities and seeking protection from the turbulent seas.

The cliffs' cultural significance extends to their practical use as well. Historically, the Hawaiian people utilized these cliffs as a natural fortress, protecting their communities from potential invaders. The towering heights and rugged terrain made it challenging for outsiders to approach, creating a sense of safety and seclusion for the island's inhabitants.

Today, the descendants of the native Hawaiians strive to preserve the cultural heritage tied to the cliffs. They continue to pass down traditional knowledge and stories to keep the connection alive between their ancestors, the land, and the sea.

Biodiversity and Unique Flora & Fauna Along the Cliffs

The towering sea cliffs of Molokai are not just a visual marvel; they are also home to a rich and diverse ecosystem. These cliffs provide a sanctuary for an array of flora and fauna that have adapted to the challenging conditions of this rugged environment.

The cliff faces support a variety of plant life, including native species such as ferns, mosses, and shrubs that cling tenaciously to the rocks. The lush greenery contrasts beautifully against the stark backdrop of the dark volcanic stone. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting several seabird species that call the cliffs home, including the iconic Laysan albatross and the wedge-tailed shearwater, gracefully gliding above the waves.

The waters around the cliffs are equally teeming with life. Dolphins, sea turtles , and even humpback whales  can be spotted in the ocean below. The underwater ecosystem boasts an abundance of marine life, making it a haven for snorkelers and scuba divers eager to explore the colorful reefs and coral formations.

Challenging the Heights: Cliff Climbing Adventures

For the daring and adventurous, Molokai's sea cliffs offer a playground unlike any other. Rock climbers and adrenaline seekers from around the world flock to these formidable heights to challenge their skills and conquer nature's grandest vertical walls.

Ascending these massive cliffs is not for the faint of heart, and only experienced climbers with the right gear and knowledge should attempt such feats. The cliffs' remote and rugged nature means that climbers must be self-sufficient and prepared for any situation. However, for those with the skills and courage, the rewards are unparalleled - breathtaking panoramic views, a sense of accomplishment like no other, and the chance to connect intimately with nature in its rawest form.

Local climbing guides are available for those who wish to take on this extraordinary challenge. They not only ensure safety but also provide valuable insights into the geological and cultural significance of the cliffs. Climbers are encouraged to respect the sacredness of the area and follow the principles of Leave No Trace to preserve the pristine environment for generations to come.

Molokai and the World's Tallest Sea Cliffs

Hidden Gems and Spectacular Lookout Points

As you venture along the rugged coastline of Molokai, you'll encounter numerous hidden gems and breathtaking lookout points that offer unparalleled vistas of the sea cliffs. These lesser-known spots provide intimate moments with nature, away from the crowds, and allow you to immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of the island.

One such hidden gem is Kahiwa Falls, a stunning cascade that plunges from the cliffs into the ocean below. To witness this mesmerizing sight, you'll embark on a thrilling hike through lush rainforests and along narrow ridges. The effort is well worth it, as the sight of the waterfall and the endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean stretching before you will leave you speechless.

For a bird's-eye view of the cliffs, head to the Puu Koa'e Lookout. Perched high above the ocean, this vantage point offers an unobstructed view of the sea cliffs and the surrounding landscapes. The vastness of the horizon and the sheer drop of the cliffs will make you feel humbled by the grandeur of nature.

In addition to these, there are many more hidden gems and lookout points scattered along the coast, each offering a unique perspective of Molokai's sea cliffs. From the serenity of Halawa Valley to the dramatic beauty of Papalaua Falls, each stop promises an unforgettable experience that will stay with you long after you've left the island.

Navigating the Waters: Sea Kayaking and Boating beneath the Cliffs

To truly appreciate the magnitude of Molokai's sea cliffs, one must experience them from the waters below. Sea kayaking and boating offer a unique perspective, allowing you to witness the cliffs' grandeur rising dramatically from the ocean's surface.

Kayaking along the coast provides an intimate encounter with the cliffs, allowing you to explore sea caves, hidden coves, and secluded beaches that are inaccessible by foot. As you paddle along the shore, the rhythmic sound of the waves crashing against the rocks echoes the timeless rhythm of the island.

For a more relaxed experience, boat tours are available, providing a comfortable and informative journey around the cliffs. These guided tours often include expert commentary on the geological formation of the cliffs, the rich cultural history, and the diverse marine life that thrives in the waters below.

Keep in mind that when navigating the waters around the cliffs, it's essential to respect the natural environment and marine life . Keep a safe distance from wildlife, refrain from disturbing nesting birds, and adhere to any conservation guidelines provided by your guides.

Hiking Trails to Explore the Cliffs' Majestic Beauty

For those who prefer to keep their feet firmly on the ground, Molokai offers a network of hiking trails that meander through its lush landscapes, leading to mesmerizing viewpoints and hidden nooks along the sea cliffs.

One such trail is the Kalaupapa Lookout Trail, which takes hikers on a journey to the Kalaupapa Peninsula, where the cliffs rise dramatically from the sea. As you trek along the trail, you'll be treated to stunning panoramas of the Pali Coast, and on clear days, you may even catch glimpses of the neighboring islands on the horizon.

For a more challenging adventure, the Pelekunu Trail beckons. This rugged path winds its way through dense rainforests, ancient taro fields, and finally emerges at Pelekunu Beach, a secluded and pristine paradise nestled at the foot of the cliffs. This trail offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in the island's natural beauty and connect with its rich history.

The Molokai Sea Cliffs offer a variety of hiking experiences, from easy strolls to strenuous treks, each one rewarding hikers with a unique perspective of this geological wonder. As you hike along these ancient paths, you'll gain a profound appreciation for the island's untouched wilderness and the forces that shaped its breathtaking landscapes.

So, as the sun sets on our virtual tour of Molokai, we extend our warmest aloha and mahalo (thank you) for joining us on this captivating journey. May the memories of these awe-inspiring sea cliffs linger in your heart, inspiring you to embrace the beauty of our world and the responsibility to protect it for generations to come. Until we meet again on our next exploration, aloha and a hui hou (until we meet again)!

Walter is the best.... We have been to Molokai twice and both times boat toured with Walter .... Great adventure! Waiters generation dates back to Captain Cook explorations... just a wide range of history wrapped into an unforgettable personality. One day again Im sure.

Walter just opened back up and I highly recommend this trip. Amazing views of the north side of Molokai and the sea cliffs. Knowledgeable captain and crew. Would definitely do this again the next time I'm on Molokai.

Uncle Walter was an awesome captain and guide. He took us on a tour of one of the most beautiful sites in the world! Very knowledge and experienced!!

My husband and I went out with Walter and Ona for a 4 hour excursion around the east and north shores of Molokai. It was UNBELIEVABLE. The water, the cliffs, the waterfalls, the caves, sea life, the land life, the knowledge , the stories... WOW, WOW, WOW!!Top day EVER living in Hawaii. Walter is an expert waterman and you can tell. He loves what he does, he has a smile that I will never forget. If you are coming to Molokai, you will truly be missing out if you do not get to take an ocean adventure with Walter and crew.

Walter Naki is the proprietor of Moloka'i Action Adventures. He is the only person (to my knowledge) that provides boat tours of the Pali Coast (tallest sea cliffs in the world) of Molokai on his Boston Whaler. Walter is a great person to take a tour with because he knows all there is to know about the coast and the island, having a deep-rooted family history there. I had never been on a boat at sea before (and can't swim), and making sure I felt comfortable seemed to be his top priority. Usually, a boat tour takes ~4 hours, with two beach landings dependent on the water conditions. Ours only took about 3 because we weren't able to do the beach landings that day, but it was still a great tour! We saw sea turtles and spinner dolphins, which the crew pointed out and pulled around so we could look at. Everyone was super friendly, and Walter seemed to know everyone else that was out fishing or swimming that day. Our tour began a little late (Hawaiian time), but we got to wait on a beautiful beach so not a big deal. I highly recommend doing this tour if you're on Molokai! Support locals.

How to see the sea cliffs of Molokai

' src=

  • 2 minute read
  • One comment

Did you know that the Hawaiian Island of Molokai is home to the tallest sea cliffs in the world? These magnificent cliffs tower between 3,600 and 3,900 feet above the ocean per GoHawaii.com .

Molokai’s sea cliffs are located on the remote, north side of the island. You can’t really drive to see them as there are no roads leading to the north side. However, there are some excellent ways to admire these cliffs.

1. Take a helicopter tour from Maui.

Many helicopter tour companies offer helicopter tours to see the Molokai sea cliffs from Kahului on Maui. Most tours include viewing West Maui along with Molokai. The tours last roughly 45-minutes to an hour. See this list of Maui and Molokai helicopter tour options .

2. Take a direct flight from Maui to Molokai.

When we flew from Kahului, Maui directly to Molokai on Mokulele Airlines, we took in a fantastic view of the cliffs of Molokai. For the best views, sit on the left side of the plane.

If you are looking to take a day trip from Maui to Molokai, direct flights on Mokulele are the most convenient way. Note that there is a ferry to Molokai, but the afternoon return ride is notoriously rocky.

Depending on the wind direction, the flight path may vary and may not pass by the cliffs. However, if you are going to Molokai for a day-trip or longer, you’ll be able to see the ocean cliffs from a couple of vantage points we detail in the following two points.

3. Hike or take the famous mule ride down to Kalaupapa – NOTE: this option is unavailable until repairs of the trail are made.

The trail that descends from “topside Molokai” down to Kalaupapa gives you direct perspective of just how steep these cliffs are. There are 26 switchbacks needed to traverse this trail.

Once you are down to Kalaupapa, a mandatory tour takes you to several spots on this peninsula — including the eastern edge of the peninsula that provides a view of the taller cliffs.

It is possible to take a day trip to Molokai for the Kalaupapa tour from the islands of Maui and Oahu. From Maui you’ll have the opportunity to take the mule ride or hike. From Oahu, you fly directly to Kalaupapa peninsula which eliminates the need to take the steep trail down. For either the mule ride or hike, you must be over the age of 16 years and  make advance reservations.

4. Go to the Kalaupapa overlook from Pala’au State Park

Though the scenic views of the cliffs will be distant, you can still catch a glimpse of the tall cliffs from Pala’au State Park .

I have seen the sea cliffs of Molokai on a flight to Kalaupapa from the West Maui Airport. Although visiting Kalaupapa was wonderfully inspirational, I long to see the rest of Molokai ,staying in the Kaunakakai area & appreciating the Hawaii of long ago. I love the Hawaiian people/culture & want to spend time around them. ALOHA!

World’s Highest Sea Cliffs: Sea Cliffs of Molokai, Hawaii

Hawaii boasts some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet and the sea cliffs of molokai are no exception..

Considered the tallest in the world, Molokai’s northern sea cliffs are between 3,000 and 4,000 feet high. To see these stunning cliffs, you can either visit Palaau State Park or Kalaupapa National Historical Park .

For an even more spectacular view, a helicopter tour from Maui will give you a bird’s-eye view. Helicopter tours are, in general, one of the most rewarding and breathtaking ways to take in the natural beauty of Hawaii. The Molokai sea cliffs are the result of the Makanalua Peninsula falling into the sea due to the erosion from the seawater pounding away at its base.  What you see now is what was left standing after the collapse.  The sea cliffs of Molokai themselves are a deep, velvety emerald green. During wet seasons you can see waterfalls coursing down to the ocean.

Make sure to book an excursion to kayak along the base of the cliffs, if you’re an advanced kayaker.  Otherwise, you’re safer to stay on shore and enjoy the view from there. OR go for the helicopter tour where you don’t have to break a sweat. Don’t miss the sea cliffs of Molokai!

What are some other scenic places to visit in Hawaii?

Pretty much *all* of Hawaii is immensely beautiful; it really is one of the most stunning places on the planet! But In Hawaii, some of the most spectacular wonders are hiding in plain sight -- Molokini Crater included! Life that you never knew existed, in every color of the rainbow, is right there, just beneath the surface. All you have to do is jump in! Truly -- t he experience of exploring Hawaii from the pristine waters of Molokini Crater is a bucket list adventure and absolutely something you will remember for the rest of your life.

What are some other sea cliffs in Hawaii?

The shorelines of the Aloha State are positively perfect, and the state's sea cliffs are truly something to experience. Makapu’u Beach has some of our favorite coastline and sea cliffs; as you look into the vast Pacific Ocean, you’ll be mesmerized by the sparkling blue water, but take a closer look: the views of the offshore Rabbit Island and the Makapu’u Lighthouse are hard to beat!

molokai cliffs boat tour

You could fly to Maui and do a helicopter tour over Moloka'i.

The Channel between Oahu and Moloka'i is one of---if not *the*--roughest in the whole island chain.

You're welcome! Enjoy your stay.

molokai cliffs boat tour

If you contact Molokai Fish and Dive in Kaunakaki (Molokai) they have the contact of a local boatman that will take you out to the Molokai sea cliffs - however his boat leaves from the local harbour. As it would be a private charter (AFAIK there are no 'tours') it would be expensive and subject to weather and local sea conditions on the day. The boatman won't risk his boat/life going out there in the winter months though.

They regularly go to the "Penguin Bank" just off the far west end of Molokai, which has great fishing, and I would imagine they could alter course a bit and get you to the sea cliffs.

But SW is right, that is one hairy channel with a vicious current ("The Molokai Express") and probably not something you or the boat captain would want to take on most winter days.....but it can be calmer on some.

Here's a good rundown of the Channels around the islands, including the translations of their Hawaiian names:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channels_of_the_Hawaiian_Islands

I was told, as a young child-that the Kaiwi channel is named that because of the sharks and many bones of lost seafarers. Though it is now shown as one word, the original name was two: Ka Iwi (the bones).

The Pailolo channel between NW Maui and Moloka'i is also well known for being very turbulent. It changes on a dime.

Been along No. Shore Moloka'i by air, boat (kayak, raft & sail), "chopper" & mule. There are only two seasons on that coast: winter & August; you want to avoid winter. (Crewmember almost died in scarey, SUDDENLY treacherous seas in July; September no picnic.)
