Kornati boat tour

We organize day tours from Murter to the Kornati National Park .The Kornati archipelago – a labyrinth of stone, with eighty nine islands, islets and rocks in the sea. It is the most indented island group in the Mediterranean. Regardless of whether you look at the Kornati Islands from the air, from the sea, or from sightseeing points on the islands, the view is equally impressive – and yet different to the eye every single time. Every vista is more than worth experiencing, and every perspective worth examining. Dry stone walls on the Kornati Islands are silent and steadfast witnesses to hard work on modest soil on stone surrounded by crystal-clear sea. The Kornati Islands are the stone pearls of the Mediterranean. The islands and islets of Kornati are scattered like in a play of sorts between the stone and the sea.In good weather, it is a silent play of blue and gray. When the winds start blowing, the archipelago starts speaking in the sound of waves... However, the Kornati Islands are a well-known shelter for sailors whenever the sea shows its rage and strength, too strong to even care about man as a temporary guest. The archipelago includes eighty nine islands, islets and rocks, with the total Park surface of 216.78 square kilometers.Even such dry pieces of data can bring to awareness the amazingly indented nature of the archipelago, creating landscapes nowhere else seen. The view from above is astounding, and the same goes for sightseeing points on the islands.

Duration: 9 hours

Max 50 persons, 3 types of menu.

M.B. Torcida leaves Murter harbour every day to visit the Kornati National Park, one of the most fascinating archipelagos of the Adriatic Sea, which got its status as a national park back in 1980 due to its outstanding beauty, interesting geomorphology and a rich marine ecosystem.

What makes Murter special is its proximity to the Kornati National Park. Such a location makes it easy to be able to enjoy the whole park and not waste most of the day travelling to it as is the case with excursions from Šibenik or Zadar.

Spread over an area of 200 km 2 , the archipelago consists of 89 islands, islets and cliffs, which, with its unusual formations, leaves the visitor awestruck with their beauty and the pure power of nature.

The wilderness of the Kornati archipelago is enriched by only a few rare human interventions that testifie to Murter's attempts, as the chief landowners on the Kornati islands, to make way for a good life far from the coast. Honouring the past, still firmly standing on the islands, are stone walls - boundaries between neighbouring properties as well as the many churches, olive groves, docks and forts.

Possibly the best way to experience such an unusual combination of the work of nature and man is a boat trip on a vessel that endured over six decades of “bura” and “jugo”, the famous north and south winds, sailing the Adriatic. Below the wooden mast of M.B. Torcida, the cruise of the entire Kornati National Park gets another dimension, bringing the modern day man back to its close and yet so distant past.

Kornati Excursion: The main stops

Crowns of kornati – towering vertical cliffs.

The most popular phenomenon in the park is the ‘crowns’, i.e. towering vertical cliffs facing the open sea which were created as a result of geological changes in the distant past. The crowns were created as a consequence of the tectonic movement of Africa towards the north and its crash into the European continent. It represents the surface extending from Istria to central Dalmatia. The highest cliff on Kornati islands is Klobučar (80 meters), followed by Mana (65 meters), Rašip Veliki (64 meters), Obručan (50 meters), and Piškera (45 meters). The deepest crown is also located on Piškera, plunging 90 meters deep into the sea.

Magazinova Škrila – Natural phenomenon

Another natural phenomenon on the Kornati boat tour is “Magazinova škrila”, also called “Ploča”, or “Vela ploča”. It sits below the highest peak of the Kornati, Metlina (237 meters), inclining towards the sea. Good starting points for visiting Magazinova Škrila are bays Kravjačica, Strižnja, or Vruje. This geological phenomenon attracts special attention to the numerous karst forms of Kornati. It is between 63 and 86 meters wide and 160 meters long, probably caused by a landslide after a strong earthquake. In order to get to the Škrila, we will have to ‘trespass’ on private property, so remember not to compromise it in any way – especially not by skipping over or demolishing the drywall, or disturbing sheep.

Dry stone walls – Monuments of human labor

Above the blueness, it is almost just the starkness of the stone. On the Kornati excursion, you will have an opportunity to see monuments of human labor – dry stone walls. Hundreds of meters of drywalls, handmade artifacts, were erected in the late 19th century. They were built to o preserve the property, but also to protect the pasture and prevent sheep from moving from one property to another. The interesting fact is that all walls were built just as high as it is necessary to prevent sheep from jumping over them and crossing to someone, yet just as wide as needed to prevent the wind from destroying them.

The remains of Illyrian forts

The first confirmed colonization of the Kornati dates to the Illyrians who began building small square forts on the island. They were mainly herders but fishing also had an important role in their economy. Apart from sheep breeding, Illyrians also engaged in fishing, so the dwellings served both as a place to live and as a storehouse. Illyrian forts are now a valuable historical heritage whose number speaks of the good population of the island at that time.

Lojena – Sandy beach

Lojena is the only sand beach on the Kornati islands and a real source of biodiversity. The whole area of the Kornati islands is attractive for divers – the only ones who know the story of all the colors of the depths below the Kornati cliffs. Don’t forget to bring your snorkeling gear! Kornati underwater is pristine and transparent because the light penetrates deep into it, creating a unique habitat for fish and various colorful corals. Thanks to its underwater world, the Kornati teems with nautical activities, notably diving and snorkeling.

Historical and Cultural Background of Kornati

The history of the Kornati islands is as fascinating as their natural beauty. Archaeological evidence suggests that the islands have been inhabited since prehistoric times, with human presence dating back to the Neolithic period. Over the millennia, Kornati has witnessed the rise and fall of various civilizations, each leaving its mark on the islands.

During the Roman era, Kornati was an important hub for maritime trade and agriculture. Remnants of Roman villas, agricultural terraces, and ancient olive groves can still be found on the islands, providing a tangible link to this distant past. The Byzantine period saw the construction of fortresses and churches, many of which still stand today as silent witnesses to the islands’ strategic importance.

One of the most notable historical landmarks is the Tureta fortress on Kornat Island. Built in the 6th century, this Byzantine fortress was part of a defensive system to protect against invasions. The fortress offers stunning views of the surrounding sea and islands, making it a popular spot for visitors interested in history and architecture.

In the Middle Ages, Kornati was under the control of various feudal lords and was primarily used for pastoralism and fishing. The traditional stone-built houses and dry stone walls that crisscross the islands are a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the local population. These structures were built without mortar, relying solely on the skillful placement of stones, and have endured for centuries.

The cultural heritage of Kornati is also reflected in its local customs and traditions. The islands have long been associated with a way of life that is closely connected to the sea and nature. Traditional fishing techniques, boat-building skills, and the production of olive oil and wine are still practiced today, preserving the cultural identity of the region.

The Kornati islands are not just a natural wonder but also a repository of history and culture. Exploring these islands offers a unique opportunity to connect with the past and appreciate the enduring legacy of the people who have called this archipelago home through the ages. This rich historical and cultural tapestry adds depth to the natural beauty of Kornati, making a visit to the islands a truly enriching experience.

Requirement: If you’re planning to rent a boat, ensure you have a valid boating license. Croatian law requires a boating license for all motorized boats.

Obtaining a License: If you don’t have one, consider taking a short course in your home country or in Biograd, where courses are available for tourists.

Coverage: Ensure your travel insurance covers boating activities. Additionally, if you’re renting a boat, check if the rental company provides insurance.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable trip, pack the following essential items:

Options for Boat Travel

Private Charters

Advantages:

Customization: Tailor your itinerary to your preferences, exploring specific islands and sites at your own pace.

Privacy: Enjoy the exclusivity of your own boat, ideal for families or small groups.

Comfort: Higher comfort levels with personalized services, often including a skipper and crew.

Disadvantages:

Cost: Generally more expensive than group tours or rentals.

Planning: Requires more detailed planning and coordination.

Group Tours

Cost-Effective: Lower cost per person, making it an affordable option for solo travelers or small groups.

Social Experience: Opportunity to meet and interact with other travelers.

Convenience: Tours are organized by operators, reducing the need for personal planning.

Fixed Itinerary: Less flexibility to explore specific sites of interest.

Crowds: Potentially less privacy and space compared to private charters.

Rental Boats

Flexibility: Total control over your itinerary and pace.

Adventure: Experience the thrill of navigating the archipelago yourself.

Variety: Wide range of boats available, from small speedboats to larger yachts.

Responsibility: Requires a boating license and a good understanding of navigation and safety.

Preparation: Need to handle all logistics, including permits, insurance, and safety equipment.

Making an Informed Choice

When choosing the best option for your trip, consider the following factors:

Budget: Determine how much you’re willing to spend. Group tours are generally the most budget-friendly, while private charters offer luxury at a higher cost.

Experience: If you lack boating experience, a group tour or private charter with a skipper might be the best choice.

Preferences: Decide whether you prioritize privacy and customization (private charters), cost-effectiveness and social interaction (group tours), or flexibility and adventure (rental boats).

Duration: Consider the length of your trip. Short day trips might be better suited for group tours, while extended stays could benefit from the flexibility of a rental boat or private charter.

By carefully planning and choosing the right boat travel option, you can ensure a memorable and enjoyable trip to the Kornati National Park from Biograd.

Kornati Excursions - Group tours to the National park Kornati

Zadar & preko (ugljan) : kornati national park tour with arbiana boat.

Apostrof plavi

Crowns of Kornati – Towering vertical cliffs

Magazinova škrila – natural phenomenon.

If you’re in search of an escape from the ordinary, a journey to the breathtaking Kornati National Park is just the thing for you. Comprising 140 islands in the heart of the Adriatic Sea, this Croatian archipelago promises an unrivaled combination of natural beauty, tranquil beaches, and vibrant marine life. Whether you’re an intrepid explorer, a nature enthusiast, or simply a vacationer longing for a unique getaway, our comprehensive guide to Kornati excursions will help you discover the charm and allure of this extraordinary destination.

As you sail around the islands, each one reveals its unique character. There are even islands with ancient ruins, silent witnesses to the area’s rich history and culture.

Kornati tours are not just about sightseeing. They’re about immersing yourself in the spirit of the place. One of the most enchanting aspects of a Kornati day trip is the chance to discover the vibrant marine life of the Adriatic. The crystal-clear waters are teeming with a variety of fish species, colorful coral reefs, and playful dolphins. Don’t miss the chance to don a snorkel mask and plunge into the underwater world. The kaleidoscope of colors and the spectacle of life beneath the waves will leave you spellbound.

Adding to the unforgettable experience is the delicious local cuisine you’ll get to savor. Enjoy a delightful lunch on board, featuring traditional Dalmatian dishes prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Whether you’re indulging in freshly caught fish or tasting locally produced olives and wine, the meal serves as a delightful gastronomic tour of the region’s culinary heritage.

As your day trip nears its conclusion, make sure to take a moment to reflect on your journey as you watch the sun dip below the horizon. The Adriatic’s sunsets are famed for their beauty, and witnessing this spectacle from the deck of your boat is a truly mesmerizing experience. The sky erupts in hues of red, orange, and pink, the tranquil sea reflects this vibrant palette, and you find yourself enveloped in an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity.

The Kornati archipelago – a labyrinth of stone, with eighty nine islands, islets and rocks in the sea.

The islands and islets of Kornati are scattered like in a play of sorts between the stone and the sea.

In good weather, it is a silent play of blue and gray. When the winds start blowing, the archipelago starts speaking in the sound of waves... However, the Kornati Islands are a well-known shelter for sailors whenever the sea shows its rage and strength, too strong to even care about man as a temporary guest.

The archipelago includes eighty nine islands, islets and rocks, with the total Park surface of 216.78 square kilometers. Even such dry pieces of data can bring to awareness the amazingly indented nature of the archipelago, creating landscapes nowhere else seen. The view from above is astounding, and the same goes for sightseeing points on the islands. The sea view is no different, as you watch the archipelago while your vessel passes through the sea labyrinth below the cliffs... READ MORE

Visit Croatia

Murter is a small island located in Sibenik-Knin county, about 34km up the coast from Sibenik . The island covers an area of 18.7 sq. km. and its population is just over 3,600.

The largest town on the island is also called Murter, and is located at the north-western tip; close by is the town of Betina. Perhaps the best-known town is Tisno , which is home to The Garden Tisno and many of the Festivals in Croatia that take place each summer. It is also the town where the bridge connecting the mainland to the island, so you’ll pass through it on your way to other locations! Close to Tisno is the smaller Jezera.

Murter

Getting to Murter

The island is connected to the mainland by a small drawbridge, passing through the town of Tisno, as mentioned. That means Murter is easy to reach whether you’ve got your own car or are travelling by bus. Do be aware, however, that the bridge lifts daily in the summer months between 5pm and 5.30pm, so try to avoid your journey to Murter then!

There are several local buses a day from Sibenik to Murter, run by  Autotransport Sibenik . If you’re travelling by bus to Murter, we’d suggest first travelling to Sibenik from elsewhere in Croatia, and then making your way to the island.

The nearest airport to Murter is Zadar Airport (65km away), although Split Airport (92km away) is also within easy travel distance. Take a look at our Getting to North Dalmatia and Getting to Split pages for details of airlines flying to these two airports.

What to See & Do on Murter

Podvrske Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island, located on the western part of Murter town. It is part pebble-y and part sandy, with pine trees for shade; the shallow waters make it suitable for young ones. Nearby is Slanica Beach , which is a sandy beach with good facilities and amazingly clear water.

Slanica Beach on Murter

Jazina Beach is one of the beaches to head to if you’re in Tisno. (In fact, it’s actually on the mainland part of the town.)

The fascinating Betina Museum of Wooden Shipbuilding depicts the long tradition of wooden ships built in the town of Betina. The modern space shows exhibits of shipbuilding and marine tools and fishing gear, plus traditional costumes and items from the town. There is also an open-air portion of the museum, which sees wooden boats moored in the harbour.

Betina on the island of Murter

The Church of St Francis of Assisi in Betina was built in 1601, with the addition of a belltower in 1752.

Kornati National Park

The island of Murter is very well placed as a starting point for visiting Kornati National Park , the amazingly dense group of 89 islands and islets. Ask at a local agency (such as Tureta Tours ) for an organised trip of the National Park.

Island Murter

The Island Murter belongs to the North Dalmatian group of islands , which contains almost 40 % of all Croatian islands and is the most dense archipelago in both the Adriatic and the Mediterranean . Island Murter is located in the northwest of both the Šibenik archipelago , as well as the Šibenik county. Only 6 meters away from land and connected with it by a bascule bridge, the island is very easy to reach, which makes it even more attractive.

There are four towns located on the Island Murter - the older ones, Murter and Jezera , and the newer ones, Tisno and Betina . Most of the island is covered with age - old olive trees and fig-trees , which are the main traditional crops grown by the natives. Since they have settled there, the present - day residents of Murter have come a long way from being farmers and stock breeders , fishermen and wine growers to caterers , chefs and travel agents ... Mean land, which used to be the cause of hard life and powerty, has turned into an attraction - desolate sandy bays have become the most visited beaches, and Kornati have been recognized as one of the most beautiful and best preserved landscapes in the world.

The Island Murter is famous for its sandy and gravel - beaches , such as Slanica , Kosirina , Čigrađa , Podvršak , Lovišća ... There is also a large number of small bays hidden from view and far away from the heat of larger beaches.

The Murter sea

The Murter Sea is the large space between the archipelago of Šibenik and Zadar . It covers the area of 210 km2 and the deepest point is 94 m deep. It is surrounded by the Island Murter from the north-east, the islands of Žirje , Kakan and Kaprije from the south-east and by the Kornati islands from all other sides.

Hi, I would like to visit Kornati Park with my family, but I am afraid that for my two little children it would be too much to spend there the whole day. Is there possibility to go there just for 2-3, maximum 4 hours? I would be really happy if you could help me. Regards

in the area around Zadar and Sibenik, there are a number of agency offering tours to Kornati, their program vary, so best think to do is to check what is avalible when you are here. I am sure you will be able also to find a tour with shorter duration.

Best, Morten

Thank you very much for your answer.

Hi Berengere,

that sounds great, I have send you a mail

Hello, I’m travelling to Zadar on Feb.2rd. And I’d like to go to kornati national park at noon. How can I get there? Where can I buy the tickets? Because it’s winter so no any tour or guide in Zadar now.

i recently spoke with one of the tour operators, he told me that during winter period, they only sail to the Kornati Islands when they have large groups, so i doubt you would be able to find any tour in February. As alternative i can recommend you National park Krka, which is open all year around.

Kindest regards,
