Dance Consortium presents NDT 2

The dancers of NDT 2 are back to impress. One of the world’s leading dance companies and huge favourites with UK audiences, Nederlands Dans Theater possess a winning combination of balletic grace and virtuosic skill with fearless athleticism, passion and personality.

For their highly anticipated return to the UK, NDT 2 will perform works by celebrated international choreographers: Marco Goecke , Hans van Manen and Johan Inger , featuring two UK premieres.

In his very personal and moving piece about the fragility of life and love, Goecke’s The Big Crying , with songs by Tori Amos , energises the fiery power of 18 outstanding dancers to embrace a celebration of life. Then Van Manen’s exquisite quartet, Simple Things , featuring Haydn’s Piano Trio No. 28 in E-major, presents a master class in simplicity.

Finally, Johan Inger’s vibrant IMPASSE bursts onto the stage with the joyful music of French Lebanese jazz trumpeter and composer Ibrahim Maalouf , as he explores the strength of togetherness over isolation in our world today.

Image description: A shallow room is divided in two by a grey vertical strip. The floor of the room is covered with a thick layer of soil. To the left, two dancers leave a blurred image of flying limbs and brown fabric. To the right, there are two dancers in brown translucent tunics: a woman kneels in the soil, leaning against the central wall. A man stands behind, knees soft as he lunges to the right.

NDT2 review – dancing clean enough to eat your dinner off

Sadler’s Wells, London The incredible young dancers of NDT’s satellite company easily navigate a triple bill of Hans van Manen, Marco Goecke and Johan Inger, fleet and varied

N DT2 is a company of incredible dancers. The younger sibling of Nederlands Dans Theater is made up of the best of international dance graduates (under new artistic director Emily Molnar ). Maybe there’s something magic in the energy and ambition and discipline you take into your first big job, matched with precocious technique. It shows in Hans van Manen’s Simple Things, from 2001, a quartet danced with immense finesse, the performers’ classical grounding evident in smooth-as-silk chainé turns and silent, springing jumps. The technical command and celerity of the dancers shows in an entirely different way in Marco Goecke ’s new work The Big Crying, with its sharp, glitching angles, fast-forward speed and precise articulation. They nail its demanding complexity. Ricardo Hartley III is especially eye-catching, stretching into the most elastic backbend, his dancing so clean you could eat your dinner off it.

They nail its demanding complexity … NDT2 in Marco Goecke’s The Big Crying.

Goecke made the piece after the death of his father (the tops the dancers wear are intended to look like the curtains of a hearse) but it has none of the cliches of grief – no gut-clutching despair, no collapse. His dancers’ world is full of angry jolts, like compulsive thoughts, and a sense of disconnect, from time or the world around them. There’s a striking moment where two dancers throw their chests together, repeatedly and robotically, as if trying to connect at the heart, but nothing yields – the thing is, with work as slick and stylised as this, there’s always the risk the audience feels that sense of distance, too. There’s an interestingly disjointed relationship with Goecke’s chosen soundtrack, songs by Tori Amos, the tumbling waves of piano and her breathy dream-voice up against the severe accents of the dance. A final new piece, Impasse, by Johan Inger , gets us closer to the dancers’ youthful freedom. A trio, at first playfully carefree, are subsumed by encroaching tribes, first a black-clad clan doing sexy Latin hips, then wild, fancy-dressed party animals. The idea’s about the power of peer pressure, the ease with which we follow the crowd. I’m not sure how deeply the work explores its themes but as you can guarantee with NDT2, it has some fantastic dancing.

NDT2 are at Sadler’s Wells, London , until 19 February, then touring .

ILLUMINATE by NDT2 at Amare in The Hague and on tour

ndt2 tour 2023

Last night saw the season’s first show at the Amare from NDT2 with two brand new pieces and the reprise of one that perhaps did not realize its true potential due to the pandemic. Each of the pieces highlighted the talents of three emerging choreographers under the banner of Illuminate .

First up was the première of Lights, Camera, Dismantled which was, as the name implies, about the illusional aspects of the entertainment industry. Choreographer Micaela Taylor, being from Hollywood, is clearly aware that all that glitters is not gold. It all started with a lot of razzmatazz with the dancers moving in sync with a drum machine and a call from one of them to start the show right now. The dancers were all dressed in white shirts, black trousers and white socks and looked like waiters from a 1950s American diner. Their faces were all painted like circus clowns or latter-day Ziggy Stardusts and some sequences put me in mind of Marcel Marceau. The crisp drumbeat soon gave way to radio static and the glitter wore a bit thin as reality struck home. I loved Lisette van der Linden’s lighting. Lit almost entirely from above with a few spotlights, the black box stage became a space where no one could hide.

Codes of Conduct was the evening’s second première in which Jermaine Spivey, to his own soundscape, created a world of individuals where each dancer had their own little space and developed their own little choreography. Almost like automata the dancers’ jerky movements to the sounds of a synthetic voice described a world of isolation. Attempts later in the piece, to virtual silence, to form relationships did not really work out for them.

Last up was Nadav Zelner’s Bedtime Story which was originally produced during the pandemic and therefore was not seen by a lot of people. Exploiting his belief that, “The small, secret moment between sleep and consciousness is the moment in which I make my dreams come true”, this was a helter-skelter of a piece. It moved so fast that the audience and surely the dancers hardly had time to catch their breath. This never ending kaleidoscope was a frenetic sequence of very short dramatic moments where each individual or group had its own designated space defined by the lighting. After a minute or two they disappeared into the darkness as another area of the stage was lit and another sequence started. I once saw Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey’s three-ring circus at Madison Square Gardens in New York and Bedtime Story was bit like that – there was so much going on and everything changing so quickly that it was sometimes difficult to keep up. The tempo was maintained by some incredible, relentless music mainly, it seemed, of North African/Arab origin. At the end the audience was on its feet but I really needed to stay seated for a little rest. Brilliant, really exciting stuff.   Michael Hasted  3rd November 2023

Cassandra Martin is currently part of Nederlands Dans Theater’s NDT2 company, which is a three-year training programme for dancers aged 18 to 23. She tells Giverny Masso about NDT2’s upcoming tour to the UK, presented by Dance Consortium...

What is it like working with NDT2?

It’s been fantastic. I’ve grown so much in the last three years – not just in my artistry, technique or training, but my world view has shifted because I think NDT has this fantastic energy. It’s just youth who are so dedicated and excited and give absolutely everything to what they do. I’ve unlocked a really excited child inside of me from being here. Dance can sometimes shut that child down, because it can be about getting things right and achieving, but with NDT2 everybody really, really loves to dance, and we’re always finding ways of dancing no matter what.

How did you cope with training from home during the lockdowns?

We spent two or three months training from home, but NDT provided us with daily ballet classes on Zoom, pilates and personal trainers. I would go on these long bike rides, take a lot of nature walks and do my own improv dance in my living room. The pandemic allowed me to reconnect with the reason why I dance: I need it to keep myself sane. It relit a fire I’d forgotten was there.

Tell me about the first piece you are performing in the repertoire?

The first is Impasse by Johan Inger, which was created in 2019 right before the pandemic. It’s a really exciting piece which in my mind is about global warming and how capitalism has turned us into consumption-hungry creatures. Each person has a different character, and backstage, to pump ourselves up, we talk about our character and what it is we want to sell today. It could be bathroom cleaner or a car, or a whole lifestyle.

What are the other two pieces?

The next piece is The Big Crying by Marco Goecke. This piece is dear to me because Marco created it right after the death of his father. At the time I’d also just lost my grandfather, so there’s a really beautiful connection because he was trying to make sense of the death of his father and the rollercoaster of emotions that comes along with grief. That rollercoaster also comes with strange joys and highs that feel manic, and it’s quite a journey. The last piece is Simple Things by Hans van Manen, who is a more classical choreographer. It’s called Simple Things for a reason – because it’s about simplicity and how things can be so powerful and clear without needing to say too much.

What excites you most about the tour?

I’m really excited to spend this amount of time in the UK and get to know smaller parts of the country that aren’t necessarily London, to really understand what the culture is like and to spend a decent amount of time there spreading dance and exploring new audiences.

By the numbers: Statistics confirm Scottie Scheffler's historical dominance

Change Text Size

Is impending fatherhood the only thing stopping Scottie Scheffler? Quite possibly.

His historic run continued Monday when he completed his victory at the RBC Heritage. It was his fourth win in his past five starts, a run that also included victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, THE PLAYERS Championship and the Masters. The only exception was a runner-up finish at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, where he missed a 6-footer to join Stephan Jaeger in a playoff.

Scottie Scheffler’s Round 4 highlights From RBC Heritage

Scheffler has seemed invincible lately, and the statistics confirm that. Here’s a closer look at some of the key stats that put Scheffler’s historic play into perspective:

  • By winning at Harbour Town Golf Links, Scheffler became the first player since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to win the RBC Heritage one week after winning the Masters .
  • Scheffler is the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006 to win the week after winning a major .
  • With four wins and a runner-up in his past five starts, Scheffler is the first player since Woods in 2007-08 to have five consecutive top-two finishes . Vijay Singh is the only other player to have such a run in the past 30 years (2004).
  • This was Scheffler’s 10th PGA TOUR victory, coming in just his 51st start since he earned his first win at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open. Only David Duval has needed fewer starts after his first win to reach victory No. 10. Duval did it in 33 starts. Tiger Woods is third on the list with 59 starts.
  • In his 51 starts since the 2022 WM Phoenix Open, Scheffler also has 23 top-three finishes (45%) and 35 top-10s (68.6%).
  • All 10 of Scheffler’s wins have come since the start of the 2021-22 season. He is the first player to win 10 (or more) times on the PGA TOUR in the span of three seasons since Dustin Johnson won 10 titles between 2015-16 and 2017-18.
  • This is Scheffler’s fourth win of the season, matching his career-high from 2022. He is the fourth player with multiple four-win seasons since the start of 2000 , joining Woods (10), Singh, (3) and Phil Mickelson (2).
  • Scheffler has now recorded 40 consecutive TOUR rounds at par or better , a streak that began in the final round of the 2023 TOUR Championship. He’s 12 back of Woods’ all-time TOUR mark of 52 straight rounds at par or better (set across 2000-01).
  • In each of Scheffler’s last seven victories, eight or more of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking have been in the field . His most recent run of four wins in five starts has included two Signature Events (Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, RBC Heritage), THE PLAYERS and the Masters.
  • Scheffler is averaging 5.38 birdies per round this season, on pace to set the all-time TOUR record for single-season birdie average (since the statistic was first tracked in 1980) . Woods set the current record (4.92) in 2020.
  • In his 39 rounds this season, he has outperformed the field average 35 times . He’s been at least a shot better than the field 30 times, at least two shots better 26 times and at least three shots better 19 times.
  • Scheffler leads the TOUR in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green by nearly a shot per round this season , after finishing atop the category by more than two-thirds of a stroke per round last season. No player had previously led the category by more than four-tenths of a stroke per round since Woods in 2009.

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports

N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.

Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.

Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.

Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .

The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.

Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.

The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .

Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.

One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.

Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."

The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .

Knewz.com reported previously:

“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].

One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”

The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.

Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.

Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.

Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .

Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.

The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.

Will Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ Setlist Change After ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ Release?

Will Taylor Swift s Eras Tour Setlist Change After The Tortured Poets Department Release 001

Taylor Swift ’s The Tortured Poets Department has already captivated the world , leaving her fans to wonder whether any of the new songs will pop up on her Eras Tour setlist.

Swift, 34, kicked off her three-hour concert series in March 2023 in Arizona, soon traversing the United States, Central and South America, Asia and Australia. The shows highlight most of her past albums: Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, Reputation, Folklore, Evermore and Midnights . There also is a section dedicated to “surprise songs,” where Swift adds two new acoustic renditions (most recently, mash-ups) to the show.

Swift has been on hiatus since early March, weeks before The Tortured Poets Department dropped on Friday, April 19. The record, her 11th studio album, features 31 songs including “Fortnight,” “So Long, London,” “Fresh Out the Slammer,” “So High School” and “thanK you aIMee.”

Swift’s fans planning to see Eras later this year — the tour leg kicks off in Paris on Thursday, May 9 — have since taken to social media, curious if they will be able to hear any TTPD live.

“OK listen I NEED Taylor to add ‘I Can Do It With a Broken Heart’ to the Eras Tour setlist. … Just that ONE. … PLEASE. … It was MADE for the Eras Tour !!!!!!!!!!” a social media user wrote via X.

Another added, “I am so obsessed with Taylor’s new album idk how to survive the Eras Tour (if I actually go twice I might just drop dead afterwards).”

Will Taylor Swift s Eras Tour Setlist Change After The Tortured Poets Department Release 002

Since Eras has sections dedicated to Swift’s previous albums , it is possible that TTPD could get its own mini-set in the lineup. Not all of her preexisting cohorts feature the same amount of songs, so Swift could cut some songs in order to add a time for Tortured Poets additions .

Spotify added further fuel to the fire on Friday as Swifties noticed the streaming platform’s official video for “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” a TTPD track, features footage solely from the Eras Tour.

Swift’s musical director David Cook , who has also been featured on several of her past LPs, also hinted that TTPD songs could make an appearance on the tour lineup.

“Not sure how much I can add to the discourse other than this album is really REALLY good. You FEEL it,” Cook wrote via Instagram on Friday, quoting “Loml” with a mind-blown emoji.

According to eagle-eyed Swifties that captured screenshots, Cook also wrote, “Wait until you hear the live versions.” The addition, however, has since been deleted.

Of course, it is also possible that Swift will drop a TTPD single in her surprise song section.

“How will The Tortured Poets Department affect the Eras Tour ? Hopefully only on surprise songs (in a good way),” an X user theorized.

While Swift has yet to address if TTPD will affect her Eras Tour setlist, she’s given fans insight into how she picks song s for the acoustic section.

“This has become my favorite part of the show because it’s become very chaotic and it’s become a challenge for me to think of new things to do for every single city,” Swift told the crowd in Singapore in March. “And hope that I’m doing something that you guys might like. It’s been a blast!”

Per the Grammy winner, she “invented [her] crazy acoustic section,” to be able to play “as many songs” as she could way over the 44 staples at each show. Adding TTPD tracks there seems like an easy way to do just that, if you ask Us.

The Tortured Poets Department is out now and Swift’s Eras Tour resumes on Thursday, May 9.
