2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans Full Field: The PGA Tour's Two-Man Team Game

Irishmen Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy team up for the first time at TPC Louisiana.

  • Author: John Schwarb

Much of the country is finally into the golf season, and for many players that means weekend pairs games. Pick a partner and take on another two-player team, either in a better-ball format or (if you want to see how much you really like your partner) alternate shot.

This week, the PGA Tour does the same thing.

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is a refreshing change from weekly Tour individual stroke play, with 80 teams of two playing the above two formats at TPC Louisiana. The first and third rounds are better ball and the second and fourth are alternate shot, with a cut after 36 holes.

Nick Hardy and Davis Riley walk off the 18th green after winning the 2023 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Davis Riley (Titleist hat) and Nick Hardy won the 2023 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Andrew Wevers-USA TODAY Sports

The format always makes for interesting teams, from longtime friends to countrymen to completely random pairings.

Rory McIlroy is making his first appearance at TPC Louisiana, teaming up with fellow Irishman and Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry. They’ll see some familiar faces including their Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, playing with his European assistant captain Francesco Molinari, as well as English brothers Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick.

Brothers and Tour rookies Parker and Pierceson Coody are a team, while at the other end of the age spectrum are Matt Kuchar and PGA Tour Champions regular Steve Stricker. Billy Horschel, who has won the Zurich when it was an individual event as well as a team event, has a new partner in Tyson Alexander, a fellow University of Florida alum.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, close friends and frequent partners on U.S. Cup teams, won the Zurich in 2022 and return. Defending champions Nick Hardy and Davis Riley are also back.

Winners earn FedEx Cup points and two-year Tour exemptions, but do not receive Masters invitations or world ranking points.

Zurich Classic of New Orleans at TPC Louisiana

The Zurich Classic is New Orleans’ premier golf tournament and the only PGA TOUR event in the region. The tournament will be held on April 25 – 28, 2024.

The Zurich Classic boasts a rich history, with play dating back to 1938 and past winners including golf greats like Byron Nelson, Jack Nicklaus, Billy Casper, Davis Love III, David Toms and Vijay Singh.

TPC Louisiana has hosted the Zurich Classic since 2005. TPC Louisiana missed hosting the event in 2006 during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. That year, many of the PGA TOUR professionals generously donated their earnings to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in the Louisiana area. The Zurich Classic was the first sporting event in the Louisiana region to be televised in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Zurich Insurance Group, an insurance-based financial service provider, became the title sponsor of the tournament in 2005. Zurich, together with the Fore!Kids Foundation – has raised over $18 million for over 40 charities that serve thousands of children in need in the southeastern Louisiana region. The Fore!Kids Foundation, the tournament’s host organization, is dedicated to improving the lives of children, educating their minds, and instilling in them the confidence to pursue their dreams.

During the 2018 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Zurich Insurance Group furthered its commitment to New Orleans when it announced its extension as the PGA TOUR event’s title sponsor through 2026.

Past Champions – Cameron Smith/Jonas Blixt, Brian Stuard, Justin Rose, Seung-Yul Noh, Billy Horschel, Jason Dufner, and Bubba Watson.

Zurich Classic of New Orleans: Teams, format and key questions about PGA Tour's team event

Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa and RBC Heritage winner Matt Fitzpatrick all feature in the PGA Tour's team event; Watch early coverage live on Thursday from 4pm via the red button on Sky Sports Golf, ahead of full coverage from 8pm

Thursday 20 April 2023 10:08, UK

BROOKLINE, MA - JUNE 19: Matt Fitzpatrick of England hugs his brother Alex Fitzpatrick after his one stroke victory on the 18th hole green in the final round of the U.S. Open at The Country Club on June 19, 2022 in Brookline, Massachusetts. (Photo by Keyur Khamar/PGA TOUR via Getty Images)

Who is playing at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans? How does the format work? We answer some of the key questions about the PGA Tour's team event...

What is the format?

The 160-man field is split into 80 two-man teams, with the top 80 available in the PGA Tour rankings getting to pick their playing partner and all involved having to either hold PGA Tour playing status or get chosen as a sponsor's exemption.

The 80 two-man teams feature in fourballs during the opening round, where players each play their own ball and the best score on each hole from the pair goes to towards the team total, then the format switches to foursomes play for the second round.

Foursomes sees each team use one ball, with one player hitting tee shots on all the odd-numbered holes and the other on the even-numbered ones. The players then hit alternate shots, with the total strokes taken resulting in the team's score for that hole.

The top 33 teams and ties progress to the weekend, where the teams revert to fourballs for the third round and foursomes for Sunday's final round. Should the tournament end in a tie after 72 holes, the formats will switch between the two different formats for each hole required for the sudden-death playoff.

What is the prize?

The players in the winning team will both receive a two-year winner's exemption on the PGA Tour and will be eligible to play in events such as the Sentry Tournament of Champions and The Players, along with entry into next month's PGA Championship.

FedExCup points and prize money will be awarded to teams making the cut, with each team member receiving an equal share for their final position.

Each player in the winning team will earn 400 FedExCup points and $1,242,700 prize money, with the rest of the $8,600,000 purse awarded to teams based on combining every two positions from the distribution table for a standard PGA Tour event.

Which players are involved?

Defending champions Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay are the two highest-ranked players in action, with the world Nos 4 and 5 together again as they look to build on impressive performances at the RBC Heritage last week.

Max Homa - a two-time winner on the PGA Tour this season - partners two-time major champion Collin Morikawa, while WGC-Dell Technologies Match Player winner Sam Burns teams up with Billy Horschel.

Last week's RBC Heritage winner Matt Fitzpatrick will partner younger brother Alex, with Tom Kim making his tournament debut alongside Presidents Cup teammate Si Woo Kim.

Who has previously impressed?

The competition only switched to a team event in 2017, making it the first official PGA Tour team tournament since the 1981 Walt Disney World National Team Championship.

Jonas Blixt and Cameron Smith were the first team winners, after beating Scott Brown and Kevin Kisner in a play-off at TPC Louisiana, while Horschel - the 2013 champion when it was still a stroke play event - partnered Scott Piercy to victory a year later.

Jon Rahm and Ryan Palmer prevailed in the 2019 contest and Smith became a two-time winner in 2021 after partnering fellow future LIV golfer Marc Leishman, with Cantlay and Schauffele back to defend their title after claiming a two-shot victory last year.

Zurich Classic of New Orleans history, results and past winners

new orleans pga tour

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is the PGA Tour's New Orleans-area event, with the tournament having been played at different points in the schedule though now it's currently played in April as a the tour's only official team event.

The event, which was first played in 1938 as the New Orleans city championship, originally started out as a 72-hole stroke-play event. The tournament struggled to garner strong fields in the 2000s and 2010s, creating doubt about the tournament's future.

In 2017, long-time sponsor Zurich supported the transformation of the event to a two-man event, featuring players taking on two formats over four days.

No player ever won the individual event twice, and Cam Smith has been on the winning team twice since 2017.

Zurich Classic of New Orleans format

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is played over four days, and there is a cut for the qualifying field.

The first and third rounds are played under the best ball format, with the second and final rounds played under the alternate shot format.

The open field, which is 80 teams or 160 players, is reduced to the top 33 and ties for the final two rounds of the event. At the end of the 72-hole event, the lowest score wins.

PGA Tour surprising duo sits atop Zurich Classic of New Orleans leaderboard

T wo duos went low at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans as Patton Kizzire and his partner Ben Kholes are tied with Mark Hubbard and Ryan Brehm.

Each team fired off bogey-free 11-under 61s to lead by one shot over three teams at 10-under, as of this writing.

Kizzire and Kholes made six birdies on the front nine to make the turn in 30 shots. Coming home, they added four birdies between holes 10-14. The duo birdied the 18th to come home in 31 strokes to cap off a strong first round.

“Well, we came out of the gates both playing really well, both birdieing the same holes. Ideally, we’d like to mix it up. But we started well and just kept it going,” Kizzire said. “Whenever one of us needed the other, we stepped up and ham-and-egged it. He was a fantastic partner. I needed him out there, and he stepped up.”

Both have played at the Zurich Classic, but it is their first time together.

“It’s pretty fun just getting out here, and like he said, having a partner. Not something we get to do hardly ever. It’s fun kind of leaning on someone else and having that camaraderie out there,” Kholes said.

Day 2 will feature a new format in Alternate-shot, which can be difficult. However, for this duo, the game plan will remain the same.

“Just trying to put ourselves in the best spots that we can and picking each other up when something doesn’t go right,” Kholes said. “That’s all you can do. Just stay in the moment and hit the best shot you can at each point, and we’ll see where that puts us.”

They were not the only players to find success; they matched Hubbard and Brehm for the low round of the day.

Teams that also performed well in the Four-Ball format on Thursday were Davis Thompson and Andrew Novak, who posted a 10-under 62.

One of the Canadian duos, Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith, are two shots back after they carded a 9-under 63. Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala finished Day 1 with a 7-under 65.

The betting favorites coming into the week , Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, settled for a 7-under 65 to sit four shots behind the leaders.

The afternoon wave got a little more wind on the golf course than the morning groups, but a few groups were poised to go low. Keith Mitchell and Joel Dahmen are 7-under through 11 holes. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are also 7-under through 10 holes to start the back nine.
