Nick Cave’s ‘Faith, Hope, And Carnage’ Book Tour This Fall Will Help Commemorate Its One-Year Anniversary

Flisadam Pointer

The endlessly opinionated musician Nick Cave will be performing double duty while on the road this fall. As Cave returns to the national music stage with a full North American tour , he will simultaneously embark on a literary tour. With the paperback edition of the “ Carnage ” musician’s 2022 book — Faith, Hope, And Carnage , co-written with journalist Seán O’Hagan — slated to hit stands next month, the entertainer will be dropping into several local spots for a book tour and signings.

On select dates, Cave will be joined by O’Hagan to discuss the work much more candidly, including on October 5 in New York City at 92nd Street Y. Cave has spoken at lengths about his disdain for interviews, but as the delicate focus of the book (inspired by the untimely death of his son Jethro Lazenby ), he’s used open dialog, especially with fans to help him navigate his grief .

During an interview with the New Yorker ‘s Amanda Petrusich, Cave echoed this, saying, “It’s ironic because, for Faith, Hope, And Carnage , I ended up speaking to Seán O’Hagan for fifty hours, or something like that. But it was well understood that I didn’t want to talk about music in particular and that I didn’t want to talk about my life in a conventional way. We were able to talk about other things. Since doing this, I have come to see the interview as almost an art form in itself. I found out, to my bewilderment and amazement, that interviews, or conversations, could actually be a way of communicating! I’d never really considered an interview to be that before.”

Nick Cave Book Signing

October 30, 2023 • 6:00 pm PDT

Nick Cave has announced a book tour with award-winning journalist Seán O’Hagan in support of their best selling book Faith, Hope and Carnage (out in paperback September 19).

Culled from 40 hours of conversations between Cave and O’ Hagan, Faith, Hope and Carnage transcends the genre of rock journalism, constituting a work of art in its own right. It is a candid dialogue rich with passionate revelation, fierce intelligence, and philosophical searching about the spiritual forces behind creativity and music. In their sole public conversation in the US, hear Cave and O’Hagan reflect on questions of faith, art, freedom, grief and love, the making of the book in the midst of the pandemic and how the following two years changed their perspectives on creativity and faith, their singular collaborative approach, Cave’s decades as the charismatic frontman of The Bad Seeds, and much more.

The book examines questions of belief, art, music, freedom, grief and love. It draws candidly on Cave's life, from his early childhood to the present day, his loves, his work ethic and his dramatic transformation in recent years.

Faith, Hope and Carnage offers ladders of hope and inspiration from a true visionary.

Over the last few years his Red Hand Files website and "Conversation with" live events have seen Cave exploring deeper and more direct relationships with his fans.

Eight dates are included in the tour – which begins next month – and includes in-store book signings and Q&A sessions.

The dates kick off in the UK, with an appearance at the upcoming Hay Festival on May 28 . From there, the tour continues throughout the beginning of June, and features two dates in Amsterdam and two dates in Brussels.

Events in Koln and Hamburg are also listed, before the tour draws to a close with a final Q&A session at the Heartland Festival in Denmark – set for June 8.

What is included in each date varies, with some events only offering in-store signings, while others also provide a Q&A session with the Bad Seeds frontman. Further information and tickets can be found on each venue’s respective websites.

The announcement celebrates the release of Cave’s 2022 memoir, Hope, Faith And Carnage , which will be available in paperback format from June 1. Pre-order the book here .

The book is based on 40 hours of interviews between Cave and his friend, Observer journalist Seán O’Hagan. Released at the tail-end of last year, the memoir covers the musician’s perspective and personal life, six years after the death of his son Arthur , who died in 2015 at the age of 15.

Cave also lost his 31-year-old son, Jethro Lazenby , last May.

“ Faith, Hope & Carnage promises to be a thoughtful book about Cave’s inner life over the last six years, a meditation on big ideas including, faith, art, music, grief and much more,” read a synopsis for the book. “It is a project prompted by lockdown, and one that sits comfortably alongside Cave’s weekly mailing list The Red Hand Files .

“It is at once borne of and in some sense a tribute to the stillness – and imperative period of reflection – wrought by a global pandemic.”

Nick Cave

Last year, Cave once again teamed up with O’Hagan to release an audiobook version of the memoir . The release was recorded in a way so that the listener – when wearing headphones – can hear the speech as though they’re sitting between Cave and O’Hagan.

Following his upcoming ‘In conversation’ dates, Cave is set to hit the road once again as part of his upcoming US solo tour .

The live shows will kick off on September 19 in Asheville, North Carolina, before making stops in another 18 cities throughout the US. Cave will then bring the tour to an end at the end of October, with pair of shows at LA’s Orpheum Theatre. Find remaining tickets here .

Meanwhile, Cave shared earlier this year that he has started work on a new Bad Seeds album . “My plan for this year is to make a new record with the Bad Seeds,” he wrote. “This is both good news and bad news. Good news because who doesn’t want a new Bad Seeds record? Bad news because I’ve got to write the bloody thing.”

Cave’s last album with The Bad Seeds,  ‘Ghosteen’ , came out in 2019. He released ‘ Carnage ‘ with Bad Seeds bandmate Warren Ellis in 2021.

About  Faith, Hope and Carnage

A Telegraph Best Book of 2022

Faith, Hope and Carnage is a book about Nick Cave’s inner life.

Created from more than forty hours of intimate conversations with the journalist Seán O’Hagan, this is a profoundly thoughtful exploration, in Cave’s own words, of what really drives his life and creativity.

The book examines questions of belief, art, music, freedom, grief and love. It draws candidly on Cave’s life, from his early childhood to the present day, his loves, his work ethic and his dramatic transformation in recent years.

Faith, Hope and Carnage offers ladders of hope and inspiration from a true visionary.

Praise for  Faith, Hope and Carnage

"In 2022, these intimate, revelatory conversations were neatly packaged into one thoughtful, moving memoir, Faith, Hope, and Carnage , in which Cave invites you into his innermost world – from his struggles with addiction to his explosive relationship with the Bad Seeds, through to grief and growth." —Brit Dawson, GQ (UK)

“[An] extraordinary, intensely personal book . . . Through O’Hagan’s sensitive questioning, Faith, Hope and Carnage is one of the most powerful and affecting meditations on grief and loss published in recent years.” —James Cook, ArtReview (UK)

“The soft-spoken, knowing voice of a wise man whose youthful excesses inevitably led him to a quiet life of meditation and art . . .There is a fly-on-the-wall sense that when Cave speaks, he has a particular audience in mind: the silently grieving.”— Lauretta Charlton, The New York Times Book Review

Nick Cave Talks ‘Faith, Hope and Carnage’ in New Memoir

by Alli Patton September 13, 2022, 1:40 pm

Art rock icon Nick Cave is a complex character, one that has been marred by tragedy in recent years . Faith, Hope and Carnage , a memoir arriving this month—crafted from over 40 hours of intimate conversations with Observer journalist Seán O’Hagan—will offer an in-depth look into Cave’s life and music over the years since the 2015 death of his 15-year-old son, Arthur, before the loss of his son, Jethro, earlier this year.

Videos by American Songwriter

The memoir’s synopsis reads: “The book examines questions of faith, art, music, freedom, grief, and love. It draws candidly on Cave’s life, from his early childhood to the present day, his loves, his work ethic, and his dramatic transformation in recent years. From a place of considered reflection, Faith, Hope and Carnage offers ladders of hope and inspiration from a true creative visionary.” A project prompted by the 2020 pandemic, and subsequent lockdowns, the book was borne from hours of phone conversations between the musician and the writer.

“This is the first interview I’ve given in years,” the “Red Right Hand” singer explained in a statement. “It’s over 40 hours long. That should do me for the duration, I think.

“It has been a strange, anchoring pleasure to talk to Sean O’Hagan through these uncertain times,” Cave continued.

Amid discussions of creativity, grief, mortality, and more, Faith, Hope & Carnage is a memoir “of intimate and often surprising conversations in which Nick Cave talks honestly about his life, his music, and the dramatic transformation of both, wrought by personal tragedy” O’Hagan added.

An exclusive extract from the book was recently released by O’Hagan ahead of its publication on Sept. 20.

The singer and his musical partner, Warren Ellis , are currently touring around their native land on the Australian Carnage Tour. A UK book signing tour is currently scheduled to begin upon the release of Faith, Hope and Carnage .

New Single ‘Frogs’ Out Now

New Single ‘Frogs’ Out Now

29 May 2024

Listen to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ new single, ‘Frogs’, from their upcoming album, ‘Wild God’, and watch the full lyric video now HERE .

The journey to creating ‘Wild God’ began with sweeping epic ‘Frogs’. The first lines Nick Cave penned for the album were powerfully evocative, referencing the first murder in the Bible, Cain’s slaying of Abel. He wrote, “Ushering in the week he knelt down and crushed his brother’s head in with a bone/It’s my great privilege to walk you home.” This striking couplet became the opening lines to the song, and set the tone for the imagery and themes that followed.

Nick Cave says, “The sheer exuberance of a song like ‘Frogs’, it just puts a big fucking smile on my face.”

‘Wild God’ will be released on 30 August on streaming, CD, and standard vinyl, along with grey and clear limited edition vinyl available to pre-order now.
