A variety of vehicles from classics to customs cruised into town for the annual car show on Sept. 23, with more than 100 registered cars expected to participate. In addition to cars and cruising, this year’s expanded event also featured a craft fair and kids zone, offering fun for all ages and interests.

Car show entries were displayed in the Value City Furniture parking lot on Gratiot Avenue, south of 23 Mile Road. Spectators also lined the roadway to watch muscle cars, street rods and more cruise along Gratiot Avenue.

More than 30 local artisans were expected to participate in the new craft fair, while the new kids zone offered free games and face painting. Live music was set to be performed by Bandwagon.

Prior to the car show, the third annual Chesterfield 5K run/walk and non-competitive 1K fun run/walk took place on-site and through surrounding neighborhood streets. The overall top finisher was Austin Remick, age 23, of Rochester Hills, with a time of 15 minutes, 58 seconds. Alex Ralston, 34, of Highland, finished second overall with a time of 16:29.5. Shane Skelcy, 25, of Rochester Hills, placed third overall with a time of 16:50.

Rounding out the top 10 were Travis Katz, 20, of Port Huron, fourth, 17:17.2; Dot McMahan, 46, of Rochester, fifth, 17:26; Justin Pinks, 16, of Roseville, sixth, 18:29.9; Asa Konwinski, 13, of Troy, seventh, 19:00; Rogan Joyce, 14, of Chesterfield Township, eighth, 19:20.7; Nolan Derouin, 14, of Chesterfield Township, ninth, 19:22.7; Kobe Coverdill, 16, of Chesterfield Township, 10th, 20:00.6.

The North Gratiot Cruise is a one-day celebration of automobile history that attracts thousands of people each year. The event is presented by the North Gratiot Cruise Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that distributes net proceeds to local community groups. The foundation has donated more than $60,000 over the years. For more information, visit cruisegratiot.com.

The revived North Gratiot Cruise is the first hot rod celebration in Chesterfield in two years after previous organizers were forced to cancel the classic car processions in 2010 and 2011 due to financial difficulties.

This year, a new cruise committee has secured the sponsorships needed to host a day of family-friendly fun to check out the muscle cars and vintage vehicles parading along Gratiot between M-59 and 23 Mile Road from noon to 6 p.m.

‘People are pumped up about cars again after the Woodward Dream Cruise, so this actually is a good time for our cruise,’ said Mike Venditti, owner of Bigg’s Bar & Grill, and a member of the cruise planning committee.

‘What we’re hearing in the community is a lot of people are surprised that the cruise is back, and I think everyone is happy to hear that it’s back. We have better entertainment than before and I think it’s going to be a great time.’

Organizers acknowledge getting the word out about the cruise’s return has been a challenge. Still, they expect between 10,000 and 15,000 people over the course of the day to either participate in the cruise or take a seat to enjoy it.

‘The people part is the wild card,’ said John Johnson, a member of the cruise committee. ‘At the very least, I think we’re gaining traction to make this a good annual event, since this really was our first year of organizing it.’

The committee was able to pay all of the overtime costs for police and fire, and no township money is being used on the cruise, a condition required by the township board, said township Supervisor Mike Lovelock.

But aside from all of the business aspects of the event, Lovelock said the cruise provides a day of free entertainment for the community to enjoy as summer comes to a close.

‘It will be a great time for families and friends to come out, relax, enjoy watching all of the cars go by, and stop at our restaurants and businesses in the area,’ Lovelock said. ‘A lot of people have put a lot of hard work and time into this, and I think it’s a great thing overall for the community.’

Sunday’s forecast is calling for near picture-perfect weather with partly sunny skies and a high of 84 degrees and a very slight chance of rain, according to Accuweather.com.

To coincide with the nostalgic aspect of the cruise, classic rock WCSX-FM (94.7) will be on hand with air personality Juline Jordan broadcasting live. Cruisegoers also can buy a raffle ticket to win the station’s Stone Soup Boss 5.0 car.

Cruise headquarters will be at the Gratiot Crossing Plaza just south of 23 Mile Road. There will be live music from The Classics, a canine unit demonstration and township firefighters will demonstrate the Jaws of Life tool.

Other places to check out include:

The Fillin’ Station Bar & Grill, 49434 Gratiot, will have a roadside barbecue, a beer tent, outdoor DJ, and a classic car contest for cash prizes

Firehouse Pub, 48925 Gratiot, will have outdoor seating, a beer tent, live music from Audio Mind, and food and drink specials

Bugsy’s Sports Pub, 50225 Gratiot, will host a karaoke contest for cash prizes, outdoor BBQ, a beer tent and oldies car show

Hamlin Pub, 50659 Gratiot, has outdoor BBQ and a Detroit Tigers luxury suite give-away.

Bigg’s Bar & Grill, 48265 Gratiot, will have two live bands – Rock Dog Therapy and Dr. Jack Band – playing on the roof, along with a DJ indoor spinning oldies

Tri-Action Auto, 50002 Gratiot, will have roadside seating, BBQ and refreshments.

A parade of dignitaries will begin assembling at 10 a.m. at Twisted Rooster restaurant near M-59 and Gratiot for the noon parade that will officially kick off the event. Anyone with a classic vehicle is invited to participate.

Buick Turbo Regal

North Gratiot Cruise Chesterfield MI 2021

Saturday, September 25, 2021, in Chesterfield, MI, the North Gratiot Summer Cruise took place. This annual gathering marks the last official car cruise event for Michiganders.

Note, it’s not the final automobile event for the year however, as there still are a few local cruise-ins at various spots that auto buffs can attend if they wish (you can see the 2021 CAR SHOW LIST HERE).

With the weather having rained earlier in the day, that may have been a downfall for a lot of attendees and spectators alike. Still, plenty of hot rods, muscle cars, and whatnot showed up to display their modes of transportation on the Avenue.

We saw 3 Buick Grand Nationals (not a single other Turbo Regal of any kind was in attendance), some Monte Carlos, a few Chevrolet El Caminos, along with a handful of other assorted GM G-body vehicles.

I’d guesstimate the number of total automobiles at this event to be about the same as last years, which was again lower than the amount from 2019. (hopefully 2022 gets back on track to being the very large show it was from years past!)

[ this is the 34th car show we have attended this year, and 1 more for sure (the Packard show on Oct 17), plus we are hoping to go to at least 1 other somewhere, achieving a total of 36 events for the year! We have already set a new record for highest number of shows we went to ever in a single year! Yay us! ]

[ check out the blue 1970 Chevelle SS, it was sporting 405/25/24 tires! Super nicely done, tubbed & tucked! The rest of the car was just as nice! It had a bunch of trophies inside the car too! ]

Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
