one day trip to jadhavgadh

At a distance of 17 km from Jejuri and 65 km from Pune, Sri Moreshwar temple, also known as Sri Mayureshwar Temple, is a Hindu temple located at Moregaon in Pune district of Maharashtra. This temple is considered to be the first temple among the Ashta Vinayak temples of Lord Ganesha and also one of the popular places of pilgrimage in Pune. The exact date of construction of the temple is unknown, though the Ganapatya saint Morya Gosavi is known to be associated with it. The temple flourished due to the patronage of the Peshwa rulers and descendants of Morya Gosavi. The temple is built with black-stone and has four gates. The temple has four minarets and a 50 feet tall wall around it. The presiding deity of this temple is Lord Mayureshwar (Lord Ganesha) also called as Lord Moreshwar, made of alloy of five metals, with his trunk towards left. Ganesha is depicted armed with a spear, while a cobra encircles his head. Lord Ganesha is flanked by his consorts Riddhi, and Goddess Siddhi. .....

At a distance of 48 km from Pune Junction, Jejuri is a town and municipality situated to the southeast of the Pune city. The town of Jejuri is renowned for one of the most pious temples in Maharashtra known as Khandoba Temple and is one of the popular tourist places in Pune. Jejuri Khandoba Temple is dedicated to Khandoba, who is also known as Mhalsakant or Malhari Martand in the region. Khandoba is the important god worshipped by Dhangar, the oldest tribes in Maharashtra. It is believed that Khandoba is a god of Sakamabhakti, the god who fulfills all the desires of his devotees. Jejuri is popular for its old Deep Mala. The Khandoba temple in Jejuri is built on a hill and offers good views all around. One has to climb a series of almost 200 steps to reach the sanctum sanctorum. There are various stone images of elephants on either sides of the main gateway of the temple. The entire flat plateau above the hill is surrounded by a stone pavement in the center, of which stands .....

3 Fort Jadhavgadh

one day trip to jadhavgadh

At a distance of 28 km from Pune Junction and 23 km from Jejuri, Fort Jadhavgadh is an ancient hill fort situated at Jadhavwadi in Pune district of Maharashtra. Fort Jadhavgadh lies at an altitude of 2511 feet and commanding a spectacular view of Diva ghat. The fort was built by Sri Pillaji Jadhavrao in 1710 CE as a place of residence. Although not as magnanimous as other Maratha era Forts like Sinhagad, Jadhavgadh had quite a few architectural similarities and a fine example of Maratha craftsmanship. Built on a quaint hill top, the steps going up the main entrance were huge stone blocks making it easier for the animals like horses and elephants going up the fort. But the step way itself was curved. Inside the fort was divided into the outer walled area and an inner structure where the women folk resided. This area was also utilized for rain water harvesting and a number of dungeons were also made in the fort for storing food grains. Till date, four of these enigmatic dungeons .....

About Jadhavgadh Fort

Located about thirty kilometers southeast of Pune, the Jadhavgarh Fort was built in the 18th century and gets its name from a loyal Maratha general who served the Peshwa army. It a great location to visit when planning a short one day trip near the city. If you plan to stay overnight, the palace houses a five-star heritage hotel. Well maintained, the structure includes a museum and also a Ganesha temple. The in-house museum or the Aai Museum is dedicated to the mothers. Dr. Vithal Venkatesh Kamat has created this museum by reviving the horse and elephant stables of the fort. For tourists who have a keen knack of discovering India’s royalty and their lifestyle, this fort holds much excitement. Starting from furniture, palanquin to the exquisitely carved wooden structures, the three-hundred-year-old fort still offers a glimpse of royalty.

The history & the location and just the beauty of the hotel was just breathtaking

one day trip to jadhavgadh

Close to nature .. refreshing and food is awesome Staff is very good

BREAKFAST WAS GOOD WITH VARIETY AND HEALTHY OPTIONS

The heritage and the history. The staff (all of them) and the trek experience. The audio tour and the wonderful museum. The outdoor seating at Chajja with its view. The room and the shower (hot water with decent pressure).

one day trip to jadhavgadh

All other thing was amazing....and when their is rainy season it was exceptional...we visit this place in july and we enjoy a lot and it was my first trip with my wife after marriage...and she was very happy..☺️

Audio Tour of the premises was very good. Helped me enjoy the full property. Also liked the trek conducted early morning by Deepak Talekar. He made the experience very informative and enjoyable.

An amazing experience indeed. The iconic fort of the Peshwa era has been a 5 star hotel since 2005, run by the exceptionally good Orchid hotels group of Dr Vitthal Kamath whose personal collection of artefacts are housed in a small museum. They serve really great food at all meals including the buffet breakfast. The staff is highly efficient and courteous.

Different experience, being a heritage property. Good food. One night stay is recommended.

all meal are delicious, have a great collection in museum, opening ceremony , closing ceremony and welcoming of guest is wounderful.

We stayed overnight on a weekend. And we found it noisy and a bit crowded despite it being a remote place. There were three corporates hosting their events, some with blaring music. One of them had late-night music party till midnight though luckily our room was away from the party place. As if that wasn't enough, the premium hill view room that we had booked wasn't handed over to us till late afternoon (we were asked to spend the afternoon in another room till ours was vacated), not sure why they had allowed late checkout to the earlier guests. They offered us to do late checkout, but that wasn't in our plans, so we checked out early with some disappointment. The premium rooms are reasonably spacious, the ones on the first floor have hill view - however, the balcony wall is high enough that you cannot sit and enjoy the view. The staff is very courteous, helpful and traditionally dressed. Food is good, spread is ok with hardly one or two continental items in the meals. Dinner was traditional and somewhat spicy while breakfast has barely one egg item (burji and boiled egg, no omelette). There's a pool on the terrace, which is not that great. However, overall the property is big and well maintained, especially the lawns are spacious. Despite the corporate events going on, we could find some space to play cricket and badminton (luckily it wasn't raining) on the lawns. Early morning trek to surrounding hills can be rejuvenating with lush greenery around while we spotted some deers on the hills. On the weekend, they have live ghazal night during dinner time. And the fort looks great when lighted in the night. Overall the experience was far short of our expectations.

Dear Sir, We, at Fort JadhavGADH thank you for taking out time and giving us your feedback. Your candid feedback has been taken in the right spirit and we hope you will give us a chance to improve so that on your next visit you can update all your friends to how you have helped us give all a lovely and memorable Fort JadhavGadh experience. We look forward to having you back soon and please feel free to contact us on [email protected] or [email protected] before your next visit so that we can take care of any special requirements that you may have. Warm regards, Fort JadhavGADH

Approach road from Pune not good.It is apx.25 KM from Pune.Last few KM up a mountain track. Fort itself is very good and worth spending a night.Staff is excellent and appear royal in manners and over courteous in service. Early morning view from the balcony is awesome,as the fort itself is at quite an elevation.Good swimming facilities and one can see beautiful mountains and lush green surroundings all around. We went specifically to enjoy calm and serenity and this met our expectations.Rooms are large and in old Maharashtrian style.Feel food is a bit of limitation as there is not much choice. However one can cherish variety of Maharashtrian food, which is a bit spicy, and one must take care while ordering,to specify less spicy and the staff would do needful.Dining in the open restaurant with stars in the sky is very romantic. We would certainly revisit for a longer stay and enjoy other activities offered.Avoid monsoon months and weekends.

Spent the day there from Pune, no night stay. Enjoyed time on the lawns, swinging in tall rope- swings from the old trees. Quiet, green with manicured lawns. Kids played on the handful of slides etc. Swimming pool is super pretty set amidst flowering jacarenda trees. Restaurant is claustrophobic till they open the windows out. Then it is airy and leads to a small sit out overlooking the entrance and fields in the distance. Bathroom was up to the mark.

Dear Mam, We, at Fort JadhavGADH thank you for taking out time and giving us your feedback. Fort JadhavGADH is itself nurturised by 300 acres of endless green farmland around it which embraces our guest with the nature and experience the real Maharaja living. We will appreciate an email from you as how we can make your stay rating 5 on 5 as compared to your current rating of 4 on 5. We look forward to having you back soon and please feel free to contact us on [email protected] or [email protected] before your next visit so that we can take care of any special requirements that you may have. Warm regards, Fort JadhavGADH

The beauty of the place only unfolds the moment you reach the gates. You are welcomed by a friendly Darban dressed in typical Maharashtrian Sambaji style. As you walk up to the path leading to the massive doors, you sense the mystic charm of history unfolding. Near the reception there is a piece of stone used for crushing masalas kept. The challenge is to pick it up and walk 10 steps which looks easy as the stone size is small. I was given to understand that it weighs 18 kgs. The rooms are well maintained and large. The food and spread was average. The views from the ramparts of the fort are amazing as this is surrounded by hills and lots of greenery. Friendly and shy staff. You have to goad them to speak. Very helpful though as they go about doing their job without a fuss. If you want to feel like royalty, ofcourse not like the Nizams, you can definitely give it a try. You will not be disappointed. Famous Pandarpur is also not far off for all the Krishna devotees. It takes about an hour to reach here from Pune airport. You may want to buffer in an additional 15-20 min. for the traffic and bad roads. Enjoy!

Pope Francis to visit Verona for a trip centered on peace and justice

Verona

By Matthew Santucci

Rome Newsroom, Apr 29, 2024 / 11:30 am

After completing a one-day trip to Venice , Pope Francis is set to return to northern Italy in late May for a visit to the city of Verona, where he will attend events focused on peace and justice while also meeting with clergy, laity, and inmates.

The Holy See Press Office on Monday released the pope’s schedule for the one-day trip scheduled for May 18 on the vigil of Pentecost.

Located in the Veneto region, approximately 75 miles from Venice, the city is renowned for its trove of Roman antiquities, medieval architecture, and as the setting of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Romeo and Juliet.”

Pope Francis will leave the Vatican by helicopter at 6:30 a.m., arriving at Verona by approximately 8 a.m., where he will be greeted by Verona Bishop Domenico Pompili, Veneto President Luca Zaia, and Verona Mayor Damiano Tommasi.

From there the Holy Father will make his way by car to the Basilica of San Zeno, which bears the name of the fourth-century Afro-Italian saint who is the city’s patron. There he will deliver a speech to priests and consecrated religious. The pope will then make his way into the adjacent square, where he will address children and young people.

The pope will subsequently visit the Verona Arena, a first-century Roman amphitheater — the third-largest in Italy, and one of the symbols of the city — where the pontiff will preside over an encounter titled ”Arena of Peace: Justice and Peace They Shall Kiss,” one of the main events of the day.

The Arena of Peace assembly was first held in 1986 as a way to bring together individuals and organizations to discuss and confront difficult social issues. This year’s meeting will be focused on several themes including peace and disarmament, integral ecology, migration, work, democracy and rights, and lifestyles.

Later the pope will arrive by car to the Casa Circondariale di Montorio, a prison housing both men and women as well as isolated inmates and a number of foreigners, located on the city’s outskirts. The pope will deliver a speech addressed to prisoners, staff, and volunteers of the prison, which will be followed by lunch with the inmates.

According to the Antigone Association , a project that issues an annual report on the conditions of Italy’s penitentiaries, at Montorio there are just under 600 inmates representing more than 40 nationalities. With a stated capacity of 335, Montorio is one of the most overcrowded prisons in Italy, a topic to which the pope drew attention in his speech to the female inmates at Venice’s Women’s Prison on the island of Giudecca on Sunday.

The pontiff’s trip will end with an open-air Mass celebrated at Verona’s Marcantonio Bentegodi Stadium at 3 p.m. The Holy Father is scheduled to leave Verona at 4:45 p.m. and will arrive back at the Vatican by 6:15 p.m.

Woman has to swim through alligator-filled swamp to take out trash every

Living on the edge takes on a whole new meaning for one woman along the banks of Georgia’s Satilla River.

Meet Katie, who has the TikTok account KayakKatie, and whose mundane chore of taking out the trash is anything but ordinary — with her video documenting the long journey already racking up nearly 8 million views on the social media platform.

Katie and her husband live in complete isolation surrounded by water on all sides.

Donning her trusty “gator waders,” Katie embarks on a weekly adventure that involves navigating through swampy perils, including lurking alligators.

@southernadventurehunter Taking out the trash is a major event! #trash #chores #dailylife #river #flooded #chorelist #satilla #kayak #4wheeler #thingstodo #gatorwaders #tuesday #tuesdayvibes #backwoods #getoutside #mosquitoes #southern #southeast #georgia #dirtroads #gators #snakes #stayhome ♬ original sound – Kayak Katie

With her faithful Chihuahua companion in tow, she loads up her kayak with refuse and sets out across the murky waters.

The odyssey of taking out the trash begins with donning a heavy set of waders, not for fashion, but for survival in the swampy wilderness teeming with alligators.

“Step one: get your gator waders,” Katie narrates in her video, “Step two: get your Chihuahua,” she adds, stuffing her canine companion into her overalls for the adventure ahead.

Once the trash is loaded into the kayak, Katie sets off, navigating the waters with the ease of a seasoned adventurer.

But the journey doesn’t end there. Upon reaching land, she hops on an ATV to complete the trek to the dumpster, only to encounter a locked gate, adding yet another obstacle to overcome.

“Unfortunately, the guys locked it before they left this morning, so I have to walk the rest of the way,” she said.

Undeterred, Katie presses on.

“We made it. No neighbors that way. Neighbors that way,” she quips, surveying her isolated domain.

For Katie, this rugged lifestyle isn’t just about surviving — it’s about thriving. Despite the isolation and the daily trials of living in a flood-prone area (where Hurricane Idalia took place last summer), she finds solace in the beauty and tranquility of her surroundings.

“To me, the struggles are nothing compared to the benefits of being here for our mental and physical health,” she reflects in a separate video. “The bugs, trash runs, gators, snakes, none of that compares to the peace that we feel and serenity and just being relaxed and living an amazing life.”

It didn’t take long for viewers to marvel at this way of living — a house in the middle of a river, completely isolated by water.

“As soon as you said step one was getting your ‘gator waders,’ I knew we were in for a ride,” one viewer remarked, echoing the sentiments of many.

“My husband acts like this is the kind of process he has to go through when I ask him to take out the trash 😭,” another quipped.

“The way my house would just be full of trash bags,” someone else said.

Katie said she and her husband purchased the home after their two adult kids were on their own.

The Post has reached out to Katie for comment.

Zendaya says she may return to music ‘one day’

Zendaya isn’t ready to put down the mic quite yet.

The 27-year-old actress opened up about her previous foray into the music industry during a recent appearance on the “Jennifer Hudson Show.” Zendaya told host and fellow singer Hudson that she initially left music due to the nature of the business.

“I love music, and it’s something that’s been special to me,” the “Challengers” actress said. “I think being in the music industry, maybe it, it didn’t kill the joy of music, but it’s when you put music and business together. Sometimes it cannot feel so good.”

Zendaya’s debut self-titled album was released in 2013, anchored by her electropop single “Replay,” which hit No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. While her initial experience in the music business wasn’t particularly joyful, Zendaya is open to returning to music “one day.”

“You know, I think if the right timing and it came, because I like creating it for myself, but if there was a moment, maybe I would, you know, put out a little something,” the actress told Hudson, adding that she doesn’t want fans to get too excited, but “maybe one day.”

Zendaya has collaborated with a few artists through the years, most recently working on music with Labrinth, who wrote the score for her critically acclaimed HBO series “Euphoria,” according to The Hollywood Reporter . The actress even made a surprise appearance during Labrinth’s set at Coachella 2023 to perform two tracks, “I’m Tired” and “All For Us.”

The actress told Hudson she was initially scared to perform with the English singer-rapper, who she described as a “wonderful person” and “so talented.”

“He asked me if I wanted to come out and perform, and immediately I was like, ‘Oh, absolutely not.’ I was like, ‘I can’t do that,’” Zendaya said, adding that she suffered from too much “stage fright.”

In 2022, Zendaya took to X (Twitter) to share her thoughts on music following the release of her song with Labrinth, “I’m Tired.”

“I stepped away from music quite a while ago, for a number of reasons, but I still really love it, so the kindness and support I’ve received the past few days just for a little tiny toe dip back into some music means the absolute world to me..thanks<3,” she wrote at the time.

Concept of converting fort to hotel is novel. Hospitality of staff is good. We stayed at Cornner suite. It was nice size. No out side view. Kids enjoyed playing football in ground near temple. Booking through travel websites is cheaper. We used cleartrip. Nice collection of artefacts in Museum.

Dear Sir / Madam, We, at Fort JadhavGADH thank you for taking out time and giving us your feedback. We have shared your feedback with our entire Team and working on it to make it better next time. We look forward to having you back soon and please feel free to contact us on [email protected] or [email protected] or call us on + 91 9987573811 before your next visit so that we can take care of any special requirements that you may have. Warm Regards, किल्लेदार Fort JadhavGADH Pune

Staying here within the fort was an amazing experience by itself. The property has been very nicely developed without truly disturbing the historc sanctity and environment of the fort. We preferred the deluxe rooms within the fort rather than the luxury tents outside. Rooms are well done up. The staff is very appropriately dressed and it rather adds to the grandeur of the property. What I found lacking in the staff was their connect with the guests. On multiple instances, despite making a specific request for a special arrangement, the staff as well as manager was incapable of doing the needful. The worse part of it was that they said they would do it and then dint. So basically if you want to organise a little surprise for someone or need any special arrangement this staff is useless and will risk a flop show. Other than that if you wanna enjoy the property and nice weather and the peace and the landscape - its definately worth a visit.

  • Sleep Quality

We went for a weekend geteway this august. We were 2 families and stayed for 1 night. We left from Mumbai early in the morn and it took us just 4 hours to reach this place. So from Pune this must be just 1 hr away. The drive is quite nice. On arrival you are given a very traditional welcome. The rooms are quite spacious with private balcony in each of them. Well maintained bathrooms. View from rooms is just ok. There is a swimming pool which was decently maintained. Cleanliness around this can be improved. The fort itself is quite small and surrounding it are the rooms. There is a big park which is nice for kids to run around. There is a museum called "aai" which is takes about 30 min to look around. Apart from this nothing much to do. My husband went for a spa which was essentially just a massage. He didn't find it worth the money Apart from that weather during monsoons is quite nice so sitting out in the balcony or their restaurant is nice. Food is typical Maharashtrian food. Decent but nothing great. Staff is helpful but room service is slow. It is a perfect place to stay if you would like to cover other areas like Khas valley of flowers etc.. I would have rated it good had it been slightly cheaper. For the money paid it feels a bit expensive

Hotel Fort Jadhavgadh is a great place to visit. The rooms are spacious. The amenities like swimming pool and Chajja-The dining room is great. They also provide with the local cuisin in seperate open restaurant. You have to take only caution; you should not visit this place during monsoon. The road & the property becomes very bad during monsoon. Yes you can visit this place during monsoon if: You are in a large group or you are on honeymoon trip :)

I am sure a lot of people will agree that the marked directions to the fort are one of the worst roads you will have to drive on..there's a better route which is far better, quicker, way more scenic. Instead of taking the marked directions, proceed straight on the Mumbai Pune ByPass until you hit NH4 and the town Khed Shivapur. There there is a small entrance on your left in 5 minutes that takes you through a road called Khed Shivapur Sasvad link road. It is very scenic, there is very little traffic. Once you hit Sasvad, the fort is only 5 minutes away. You will see the route on Google Maps clearly.

Charles Barkley Jokes Pelicans Don't Even Deserve Offseason Trip to Cancun

  • Author: Patrick Andres

If you're a New Orleans Pelicans fan, Saturday was bad enough. The Pelicans completely came apart in Game 3 of their first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder , losing 106–85 to go down 3–0.

If you're a New Orleans fan who happens to call Galveston, Texas, home, things became significantly worse after the game.

Hall of Fame forward Charles Barkley lit into the Pelicans on TNT's Inside the NBA , suggesting they had played so poorly as to earn a trip to the Gulf Coast city.

"We're not even gonna send them to Cancun. We're gonna send them to Galveston with that dirty a-- water," Barkley said, referencing the Gulf of Mexico beaches. "Y'all quit. Drive your a-- down to Galveston."

Chuck’s had it with the Pelicans 💀 pic.twitter.com/hko6mQY8kN — NBA on TNT (@NBAonTNT) April 27, 2024

The moment left the panel—including Hall of Fame center Shaquille O'Neal—in such hysterics that the show's crew could be heard laughing in the background.

"We're not even giving them a plane ticket to the beach. We're sending their a-- to Galveston, Texas," Barkley said. "Right where that dirty water washed up on the beach. They can't even get in the water."

If you work for Galveston's tourism bureau, you have a Monday ahead of you.

Rooftops view of Turin on a sunny winter day.

My four-day rail and ferry adventure from the UK to Albania

From London to Tirana, via Chambéry’s medieval streets, bustling Bari and Albania’s dynamic capital, this trip across Europe has treats at every turn

M y overriding memories of crossing countries by train, on a trip from London to Albania, are of half-empty carriages and countryside sweeping past windows bathed in the soft orange glow of sunset. I remember cypress trees, red-roofed villages with square churches, farmland in neat strips and row upon row of vineyards.

On my London-Paris-Chambéry-Turin-Bari-Tirana journey over land and sea, there was, for long stretches, little to do. The wifi was patchy. It took a while to adapt to having so much time to simply watch the world go by, travelling through landscapes without having to navigate them.

The biggest stress happened long before I set off, when a landslide not far from the French border with Italy blocked the rail line between Chambéry and Turin, forcing a closure that continues today. Byway, the no-fly operator I had booked with, offered to reroute me through Nice and on to Turin via the Vermenagna valley (with changes in Tende and Cuneo), or book me on the FlixBus service over part of the Mont Blanc massif. I was keen to see Chambéry and the Alps, so I chose the bus.

The writer leans out of the train door. She is wearing a long denim coat and sandals and looks excited.

People seemed surprised when I told them I was travelling overland to Albania. As I gushed about the romance of slow travel by train and sleeper ferry, and my excitement about Tirana, I got comments about being “brave”. I didn’t feel especially brave: all the planning, tickets and hotel bookings were done for me, and friendly help was a WhatsApp call away if needed.

I just had to download the Rail Planner app for my Interrail pass and make sure I was at the right station at the right time (Turin was the biggest challenge: it has four main railway stations and taxis scream between them bearing anxious-looking passengers).

The entire journey took four days. If I did it all again, I’d stay longer in Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot – and remember to buy my Paris Métro ticket from the cafe on the Eurostar.

Day one: London to Chamb éry

A street with pale pink classical buildings and a statue on a plinth.

First to Paris’s Gare du Nord, then the metro to Gare de Lyon, where I make a beeline for a cafe opposite the station. Noise pervades the pavement tables of Café Terminus, but the cacophony is delightful – an atmospheric place for a citron pressé .

I’m in plenty of time for the train to Chambéry and, excitingly, am on the upper deck. Soon, we break free from the suburbs to trace huge stands of forest. Beyond Lyon begins a ripple of hills, lazy rivers and thickly forested slopes. As evening approaches, it’s all Alpine scenery. I arrive at an almost-empty station and walk to the boutique Hotel des Princes in Chambéry’s old town.

Chambéry has an Italian feel – it was the seat of the House of Savoy before the dynasty moved on to Turin – and its medieval alleys, cathedral and pastel-coloured townhouses are quietly impressive. The 1838 Fontaine des Éléphants sits in the middle of the closest square to the old town, and peeking from the end of every street are the Bauges and Chartreuse mountain ranges. My stay is peaceful and easy.

Day two: Chamb éry to Turin

Misty blue mountain silhouettes.

From Chambéry, the train to Turin would take about 2½ hours, but the bus takes double this. I’m on the top deck again, which is worth it for the sight of misty fingers of early morning light breaking across the mountain ridge. Snoozing backpackers rouse themselves to snap pictures of remote Mont Blanc peaks, before slumbering once more through the tunnel to Italy. In Turin there’s perfume in the air from the blossom-covered trees.

Turin’s grid of long, straight boulevards is testament to its development by the Romans – the redbrick Palatine Gate is another Roman relic – and its grand piazzas, royal palaces and graffitied colonnades date from the city’s Savoy heyday in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today, the number one attraction is the Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum).

My favourite moments? Ricotta and fig ice-cream on Piazza San Carlo, an aperitivo on off-the-beaten-path Via Sant’Agostino and the towering neoclassical Mole Antonelliana (national museum of cinema). I eat Turin’s famous doughy pizza al padellino (pan pizza) and spend a comfortable night in the eaves of Hotel Urbani in 19th-century residential streets close to the grand Porta Nuova train station.

Day three: Turin to Bari

A rolling mountain range with cumulus clouds in the sky.

The views from my next train are of cinematic Tuscan scenes. Scorched fields, vines and Italian cypress trees. Neat red roofs and shabby-chic farmhouses. Fluffy clouds cling to hills that Google Maps tells me are the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. After hours of soothing golden landscapes, the opal-blue Adriatic wallops into view just north of Ancona. Beach bars whip by and cypress trees are replaced with palm trees: I’ve arrived in the south of Italy.

Bari is hands down my favourite stop. The noise, heat and energy as we step off the train in the early evening are joyous. After Chambéry and Turin, Bari feels brash, a little rough around the edges even; a proper port city. The labyrinthine alleyways of the whitewashed old town are almost cliched in their cuteness. Despite the troupes of tightly packed headphone-wearing Americans following guided tours, it somehow manages to retain a tranquil atmosphere.

An elegant old building presides over the port, with its little fishing boats, on a sunny day.

Old ladies yawn from the shade as tourists surreptitiously snap pictures and laundry flutters from balconies. I could stay for ever, but after 24 hours (which includes a lot of pasta, a stroll along the posh promenade to the not-so-posh city beach and a night in an elegant aparthotel, Residence Zodiacus , halfway between the station and the old town), it’s time to board the night ferry to Albania.

Day (and night) four: Bari to Tirana

The mosque is lit in evening sunlight, with mountains in the background.

I arrive at the ferry on foot and am escorted through the car deck to jokes about going in the wrong direction (to Albania, instead of from it). In the early morning I spot a pink sky through the cracked window of my comfy en suite cabin, and head to the top deck to see the sun rise over the distant outline of Albania. Disembarking in the port of Durrës is a bit of a scrum and there’s a bus to the capital waiting, but I opt instead for a five-minute taxi ride to the centre of town and breakfast of pastries and espresso on a dazzling white road lined with boutiques and palm trees. I later regret this though, as the aircon on the grubby public bus I eventually take to Tirana is more tired than I am, and drops me in an urban sprawl miles from the centre.

Tirana itself is a revelation. My hotel, Padam Boutique , is a grand villa with handsome rooms and floor-to-ceiling windows, and there’s striking new skyward architecture on every nearby street. A short stroll away is the landmark Pyramid of Tirana , which stands as a symbol and monument to change (and is fun to climb at sunset). Skanderbeg Square – a jumble of buildings erected on a roundabout at the time of the celebrations to mark the fall of communism in 1992 – is now a pedestrianised, glossy public space. There are nods to Albania’s recent, wretched history behind the iron curtain, of course – the Bunk’Art and Bunk’Art 2 museums, in nuclear bunkers are unmissable – but Tirana and the country are more than just the last century. My journey is done, but it feels like Tirana is just getting into its stride.

The trip was provided by Byway , which offers sustainable travel and accommodation packages across the UK and Europe. Its Alps to Albania trip costs from £679pp
