Palomar Mountain Observatory

High above the bustling suburban sprawl of San Diego city life, Palomar Mountain Observatory is a welcome break to travelers trying to escape the hustle and bustle of other parks that are often overcrowded with visitors looking for a weekend retreat.

Palomar Mountain State Park is a hidden Southern California gem offering a unique Sierra Nevada-like atmosphere. Nature lovers can enjoy over 1,600 protected acres for picnics, fishing, and camping. A visit to Palomar Observatory, the area’s centerpiece, is a must-do activity. It is considered one of the most fascinating scientific marvels in the United States.

Palomar Mountain Observatory Museum

Visiting Palomar Mountain Observatory

Palomar Mountain Observatory is home to four revolutionary telescopes that have aided scientists and astronomers in discovering new and exciting stars that comprise our Milky Way Galaxy galaxies and other galaxies beyond our own, as well as asteroids, comets, and quasars, which take billions of light-years to reach Palomar Observatory.

The neat thing is these great telescopes are still used every clear night of the year and are open to the public for viewing and learning.

Palomar Mountain Observatory

Nearby is the Palomar Observatory museum that houses displays about the telescopes and the engineering feats that allowed the Observatory to be constructed, as well as an exciting narrative about how the invention of Pyrex allowed the 200-inch mirror to be cast since it doesn’t contract and expand very much.

Guests are invited to spend an evening stargazing under the night sky atop Palomar Mountain. They will have the opportunity to view the cosmos through multiple telescopes with the help of Palomar’s skilled docents. There are also guest astronomy speakers that will educate and enthrall those interested in the mysteries of space.

The Palomar Mountain Observatory tour lasts approximately eight hours, including travel time, and leaves at 3 pm on scheduled days.

Palomar Mountain Observatory

There are also great pictures of the universe and the usual mind-blowing astronomical numerical comparisons. Most displays are images and text or computer touchscreen displays, so there are few tactile exhibits for small kids. A small, on-site gift shop sells astronomically themed shirts and other neat souvenirs.

Palomar Mountain State Park

Palomar Mountain State Park offers dense Coniferous forests with Lupine and buttercups blooming on-site, while squirrels and raccoons run about the park. Doane Pond, filled with bluegill, catfish, and trout, is stocked regularly.

Palomar Mountain State Park

Within the park’s confines is the Doane Valley Campground, which is adjoined by some excellent trails, including the Doane Valley Nature Trail, a half-mile leisurely nature walk along a trickling stream to a pond. Along this trail, the plant life is the box elder, creek dogwood, wild strawberry, mountain currant, and Sierra gooseberry. Hikers will also see a 150-foot-tall incense cedar.

Trail maps can be purchased from the Palomar Mountain General Store, which has books and other items to help you navigate the mountain without getting lost.

The area has three campgrounds, some featuring spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and some offering flush toilets and hot showers.

The campground also serves as the trailhead for the Observatory Trail, a 2.2-mile trail that begins with an uphill hike that ends at the Palomar Observatory entrance gate. This trail has an excellent view of Mendenhall Valley, one of the many meadows on Palomar Mountain, from a large wooden platform.

Palomar Observatory Hours

Palomar Observatory is open daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. (closed December 24th and 25th). Palomar Observatory Gift Shop is open on weekends and during the summer from July 1st to August 31st. Suppose you plan on visiting the Observatory from the San Diego area. In that case, you may consider the Palomar Observatory Astronomy Tour that leaves from the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park.

Palomar Mountain Observatory Entrance

Where is Palomar Mountain Observatory

It is only two hours from San Diego and three hours from Los Angeles. Palomar Mountain has something for everyone and is a beautiful and educational place for adults and children.

Palomar Observatory is located within the Cleveland National Forest on Palomar Mountain in north San Diego County at 5,500 feet above sea level. Directions: exit Interstate 15 at State Highway 76 eastbound.

Twenty-five miles from the interchange, County Road S-6 exits to the left, climbs to the Palomar summit, and ends at the Observatory gate. San Diego County Road S-6 is a mountain road with many curves. Make sure your car is in good condition before attempting this day trip.

Snacks and food are available at the Palomar Mountain General Store. Mother’s Kitchen serves tasty vegetarian dishes adjacent to the general store. Palomar Mountain Observatory 35899 Canfield Road Palomar Mountain CA 92060-0200

Palomar Observatory

High on Palomar Mountain, at an elevation of 5500ft to avoid light pollution, the Palomar Observatory is simply spectacular – as large as Rome’s Pantheon, with a classic design dating from the 1930s. Run by Pasadena’s prestigious California Institute of Technology , it houses five telescopes including the 200-inch Hale Telescope, once the world's largest.

On weekends between April and October, visitors can take guided tours, usually given at 11am and 1:30pm. Tickets are first-come, first-served. Bring a fleece jacket – temperatures inside the observatory hover just above freezing during cooler months.

Call ahead to check road conditions and opening hours before making the long, winding drive here.

We held our Spring Singles Retreat at Palomar Christian Conference Center in April 2022. It was beautiful and our group gave it high marks and loved it asking to come back. I loved working with Kelly the guest services manager. I read some comments and was surprised. Reminder - this is a really nice retreat camp and not a hotel. We go to retreat camps 2-3 times a year. We know what is nice trust me! Let me say how good and delicious the food was ... wow. The homemade spaghetti sauce they can bottle it and sell it. They give 4th and 5th servings and everything is homemade. They even make gluten-free desserts and meals and accommodate dietary restrictions more than most. They made special desserts for our group. The staff was so great. HOUSING - Our group stayed in Spruce Lodge nice motel style rooms with bedding included with a bathroom/shower. Kerrigil Lodge with bunks and bathrooms in each lodge with shower. Our speaker and his family stayed in Stella Wright Cottage. FUN ACTIVITIES - The fun outdoor activities was a huge hit with the Gun Range, Zip Line, Archery, volleyball, ping pong. We wanted to do the horseback riding and they weren't ready yet after a big storm the previous weeks and needed to clear the trails again. The swimming pool is only open like all other retreat centers Memorial Weekend to Labor Day Weekend. MEETING HALLS - We were the only group there so we were blessed with the beautiful new Kerrigil Hall for our evening group activities. The Chapel for retreat sessions. This room is the only place I wished had new flooring or new carpet. It needs updating other than that it was great. I highly recommend going to Palomar Christian Camp. Next time we're going when we can ride the horses and use their beautiful pool. We will be going back!

We are excited to host our first retreat at Palomar Christian Conference Center (PCCC) in 2022. It's been refreshing to have a retreat center so organized with tons of fun activity options including horses on site, 650' zipline, high and low ropes courses, archery, swimming pool, paintball course and more. PLUS they have hotel style housing (very rare to find now). Kelly is the new guest services manager who is easy to work with and very nice. We met Steve and Wayne that runs the dining hall. They go out of their way to accommodate any dietary restrictions, and offer 2nds and 3rds for meals. That is rare! Meals are delicious and homemade that includes a salad and fruit bar. We have been hosting annual singles retreats since 2008. This is an exceptional place to host a retreat in so many ways. **Every year they have 15,000 people attend retreats here.** The drive reminded me of traveling to Calvary Chapel Conference Center Twin Peaks.

Photo of Evan C.

Bottom Line: If you want a conference center away from it all but still awesome, this is it. Tons of activities, great lodging, great food, and an amazing staff of folks. Never had a bad time here. The Good: absolutely beautiful, with well made conference areas stocked with tech stuff, good chairs, and nice amenities (coffee came in clutch ). Zip lining, paint ball, archery, hiking, and all the fun stuff in store, too. They even have horse camps (though I wasn't a part of that) The Bad: I had to leave at some point.

Launch Camp review. Launch Camp is this company's "We bring summer camp to your church" program. This is a high energy camp with high energy counselors. kids will play games, sing and dance, get wet on waterslides, and no camp would be complete without a game of parachute. This was a well run day camp and the staff seemed to be all-in.. Most importantly my daughter had a good time. I strongly recommend Launch camp - Suzie got rave reviews from my child. Miranda had her moments too.. - if your camp is inside of a church with carpet, make sure your child wears long pants.. "rug burns".

By far one of the best camps in San Diego county. We took a Catholic Group there, and they completely respect our denomination. They also have extremely beautiful recreation amenities. I highly recommend anybody who's looking for a retreat say to host a retreat to go here over all other camps in the county

IF YOU WANT TO GROUP CAMP GO ANYWHERE ELSE THAN THIS PLACE. First off let me say, the accommodations were ok. The beds are literally a board under a flimsy pad. So be prepared to not sleep. (Davis Building) The restrooms were disgusting. There were boogers in every stall on the walls and doors. These restrooms are not cleaned well. There is no ability to lock the main door of the cabin or the rooms you are in. The kitchen staff were very unprofessional. The food was not stocked when empty, the staff here seemed to be bothered by their job of serving. I had to literally ask one of the men to get away from one of my cabin girls. He was moving from one side of her to the next while cleaning up a minimal amount of mashed potatoes she spilled while trying to serve her plate. He then took the serving spoon away from her to "help" serve her. I told him to leave her alone and to back off. He was very offended, but not by his own behavior more by the fact that I called him out. The staff were not prepared to handle the amount of children we had, and most of our kids did not get to do zip line. I will not go here again and will attempt to keep all my friends and family from this nightmare place.

Photo of Jennifer W.

First, the positives. The mission and message of the conference center is absolutely wonderful! The staff was always kind, friendly and helpful with one notable exception. The two star rating is really a reflection of two things that need improvement badly. 1. Cleanliness. I understand this is a camp environment but the level of filth embedded into the carpets and the cushioned seating of the chairs was horrible. The smell from the chairs would make anyone gag. 2. Food. The food at this place was inedible except for the salad bar which is the only thing that kept me going for 3 days. Every meal we had was made from the cheapest ingredients possible. All of the meat products were terrible tasting. There was no seasoning used. The cheese in the mac-n-cheese was awful. It wasn't even a block of Velveeta which is palatable. This stuff was so bad kids wouldn't eat it. For taco night the ground beef didn't even have any taco seasoning or salt and pepper. The rice was the worst attempt at mexican rice ever seen. It was a gelatinous gob of rice with no salt and no seasoning and just a can of tomatoes in juice thrown in. There was an attempt to make a bulgogi beef and a teriyaki type chicken. All of which had awful sauce components and no seasoning. Spaghetti noodles were served as an accompaniment with no seasoning in the water they were boiled in and then they were tossed in some sort of oil product to get them not to stick. All of the vegetables served were boiled to death with no seasoning. To add insult to injury the camp staff would berate the children for any food waste after EVERY meal. These kids were hungry let me tell you and they would grab food to eat because they wanted to eat it but once they tasted it they couldn't. It was all so terrible they would rather starve. With the exception of breakfast these kids weren't able to choke down the food. Breakfast on the last day was the most edible. Frozen hash browns, under cooked bacon, scrambled egg product. These were not eggs cracked out of a shell but the kids would eat them.....whatever they were. After having to sit through each of these meals myself and try to find something to eat I felt for these kids. For the staff to actually have the audacity to serve this food and then berate and criticize children for not eating it after every meal I was appalled by it all. Palomar, your kitchen staff can do better. They didn't even try to make the cheap food they order taste good. Until you can serve edible food you should refrain from criticizing children for wasting it.

My son attended the Adventure Camp; boys between 6-9 grade. I REALLY REALLY wanted this to be a great experience for my teenage son. They say they have devotions. My son said there was no reference to opening the Bible and it was basically time spent sitting on sleeping bags. My son said they only prayed before meals. They say for the parents to write letters ahead of time so they could give the kids letters from us daily. My husband and I wrote at least 5 letters. My son didn't receive ANY OF THEM. My husband called a few times afterward to ask why our son did not receive ANY of our letters and finally someone responded. They said they could offer us a $25 discount on the next camp? My son does not ever want to return. That doesn't help us one bit. They said they would take pictures every day and we were not allowed to supply him with his own camera. Well, they favored some kids and didn't get many pictures of others; my son was one of the "others". I didn't get to see my son skeet shoot for the first time or play nerf bows and arrows, etc. Another disappointment. My son came home, completely covered in bug bites. Apparently his spray leaked out and it would seem that a leader would help him out by spraying him with bug spray. God says "to do good to all, but especially to the house of faith". Couldn't ANYONE spare a few squirts of bug repellent?! I sent along a spray bottle of Permethrin Clothing Insect Repellent which we used on his clothing prior to leaving. I even bought him a netted sleeping bag tent to help alleviate the bites. He still woke-up to a spider on his face. I wonder if his sleeping bag that they provided was the culprit. Also, the list didn't say to bring pillows. If you do send your kid: you might want to have him BRING A PILLOW. My son does NOT want to ever go back again. This was suppose to be the highlight of his summer. I am very disappointed that he walked away without any encouragement in his faith. They said there was going to be a "ceremony" when we drove to pick-up our kids. I am disabled and the long drive didn't help my bad lower back and neck. The ceremony was a 5 minute speech that was concluded by allowing the parents to take group pictures. One parent decided she was more important than anyone else and got in the way for other parents to get a shot of the group without her backside blocking some of the campers. It was poorly organized and executed and was definitely not worth the 3 hours in the car and 2 days of being bed bound afterward. Lastly, as we drove out of the campground, there were highway patrol SUVs and an ambulance at the campground. We prayed nobody was hurt and ventured down the windy road. About halfway down the mountain, we saw a bicycle on the ground with a helmet, sunglasses and water bottle on the opposite side of the road. We decided to pull over and make sure the bicyclist wasn't walking around in shock (we thought there was an accident). As we got out of our car, another car pulled behind us. They too were concerned. All the sudden the driver of the other car yelled, "bees!!" He jumped in his vehicle and drove away. Meanwhile, I got stung 5 times. The highway patrol pulled over behind us and watched as we tried to get away from the swarm. I finally got back in the driver's seat and picked-up my husband who wandered 100 ft away from our car. The highway patrol would not get out of his vehicle. Instead, he used his speaker to say the bicyclist is up at the camp getting treated and they were there to recover the bicyclist's gear and bike. I have long hair. While driving down the twisty mountain road I could hear a bee still swarming in my hair. Nerve-racking! I thank GOD that I had Benedryl with me. Both my husband and I were stung numerous times. WHY WAS THERE NO WARNING AT THE CAMP ABOUT THIS? THEY KNEW THERE WAS A SWARM AND YET COULDN'T BE BOTHERED TO LET ANY OF THE PARENTS WHO WERE PICKING-UP THEIR KIDS KNOW ABOUT THE BEES AND TO HAVE US IGNORE THE DESERTED BIKE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD? If you do decide to send your child, I pray they have a better experience than my son.

Our small church plant just had the pleasure of experiencing this place over Memorial Day weekend and it was an awesome time had by all. The hospitality from the staff, was exceptional they really make sure you're treated well. The cabins were large, clean and beds were super cozy. There is brick fire place inside each cabin and they provide you with the matches and fire starter. The low ropes challenge was terrific to teach, communication trust and other great values they were also difficult too. I would highly recommend you check this out.

My child recently went there for a youth camp event. After being there for many hours (until around 9:30 pm) they weren't able to get in to their rooms due to "maintenance". Come to find out they were treating the rooms for possible bed bugs and were not being upfront about the problem. The manager specifically told one of our leaders had they told us we wouldn't have come. Of course not! To me, that says they were more concerned about money than doing what was right. Pretty disappointing considering this is a "Christian" camp. Our group decided to not take a chance and left camp...what a bummer for our kids. Fortunately, the Lord provided an even better camp experience for our youth group. Now all 40+ (kids and leaders) have to take extra precautions to make sure we don't spread bed bugs to all of our homes. Really disappointed they didn't think how that would affect our group. I don't think we'll be having any events here in the future.

Palomar Observatory Virtual Tour

Thanks to the technology of spherical (360°) panoramic imagery, we are able to offer a bilingual, high-resolution, virtual reality (VR)-enabled tour of over a dozen locations within Palomar Observatory including the three main telescopes, the Visitor Center, and selected areas around the domes including several inaccessible to the public.

We recommend viewing the virtual tour on a desktop or laptop in fullscreen mode using the icon in the control bar. While it is possible to view the tour in smaller screens (e.g., large tablets), we suggest using the "lite" version of the tour for screens narrower than 700px (e.g, smaller tablets and smartphones). The lite tour is also VR-enabled, but lacks many of the features found in the full version of the tour. Click here to load the full tour.

Below are several entry points to the virtual tour. Once inside, it is possible to navigate to any of the locations via the drop down menu on the top left without exiting the tour. To look around, drag (click and move while holding) the cursor across the image. Alternatively, click inside the tour window and use your keyboard arrows to move in small steps. Icons superimposed on the panoramic images allow for navigation to other locations as well as bring up more information, images, and videos. The language switch is on the top right. Further instructions and FAQ may be found in the help page brought up by clicking the icon in the control bar.
