The "2012" edition of Tiger Woods PGA Tour is the first in the long-running golf series to feature a virtual re-creation of the famous Augusta National Golf Club, and allow players to compete for the coveted green jacket. The game's new "Tiger at the Masters" mode re-creates each of Woods' four Masters wins, and challenges players to match (or beat!) his scores. Another 23 virtual versions of real-life courses come standard in the game, as well, including St. Andrews, The Royal Melbourne, and Pebble Beach.

Through each hole in the tournament, a computer-controlled caddie is available to offer situational advice on strategy, shot selection, and green-reading. The game incorporates many of the series' other signature features, including a career mode in which players can develop a custom character and lead him onto the PGA tour. In other modes, gamers can golf as or against more than 20 professional stars of the sport. PGA Tour 12 also offers a revamped broadcast-style presentation, with commentary from Jim Nantz and David Feherty.

On January 4th, 2011, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 was announced by EA Sports . The game is subtitled "The Masters" and is the first in franchise history that includes both Augusta National Golf Club and its Par 3 Course, as well as a playable version of The Masters tournament. According to EA, a new type of "laser scanning technology" was used to scan Augusta providing "the most authentic digital representation" of the course.

This is the earliest in the year that a game in the Tiger Woods franchise has been released. Traditionally the series released games in August, with the previous two installments being released in June. The March release date was chosen to coincide with The Masters, which took place April 7-10, 2011. This is also the first game in the franchise that does not prominently feature Tiger Woods on the cover artwork, although he is front and center on the box of the Collectors Edition.

• The standard versions for Xbox 360 & PS3 contain a total of 16 courses.
• A PS3-exclusive Collectors Edition adds an additional five courses, for a total of 21 in that package.
• The Wii version of the game features a slightly different set of courses, for a total of 25 in all.
• The PC version was released later in the year on September 6th, but was criticized for its limited graphics & online modes, and for essentially being a boxed version of the browser-based free-to-play Tiger Woods Online . EA even issued refunds to unhappy customers because of this.
• The iOS version of the game does not include The Masters courses (and subsequently doesn't have "The Masters" subtitle.)

New Features

• "The Caddie Experience," which provides the player with a fully voice-acted caddie who gives advice on your swing, helps you read greens, choose your shot and club selection, and more. This optional feature can be toggled on or off at any time.
• Although the franchise first used the PlayStation Move motion controller in Tiger Woods 11 , in an effort to improve upon the Move controls for this year's game, the developers have stated that "the swing mechanic for the Move has been completely rebuilt."
• Jim Nantz from CBS Sports provides commentary for the first time in the series and David Feherty returns to the franchise to join him.

EA has announced Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters for PC and Mac.

It launches as a digital download on Tuesday, 6th September.

It works with PC game Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online, with simultaneous group play. There's live chat on the course, too.

You have to be a member of Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online, though, to make use of these features. Luckily, included in the download is a three-month membership to Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online. Sorted.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 launched on console in March. It introduced the Masters – a first for the series.

Furthermore, free tier subscribers will get the Scottie Scheffler’s Signature Wood Spec , and premium tier subscribers will get the Trick or Tee Driver among other themed gear and apparel.

Players can also level up their Pro Pass throughout the season by earning tokens. These can be gained by completing live quests and playing rounds in Online, Tournaments, and Career modes. Moreover, the update includes a fresh look for the menus, screens, and key art, discarding the Ryder Cup theming in favor of the original Masters theme. There are also adjustments applied to the online playlists : the Ryder Cup Foursomes and Match Play formats are replaced with standard Foursomes and Match Play formats.

These now include a wider variety of courses for players to explore and conquer. However, due to technical constraints related to the non-Ryder Cup season, Ryder Cup formats have been temporarily removed from Private Match. For those who enjoy the Ryder Cup formats, though, they remain readily available in Quick Play .

A key visual enhancement to look forward to in this update is the introduction of interactive 3D grass . The grass in the game now reacts when it comes into contact with the ball, club, or golfer, making for a more immersive and realistic golfing experience. The update also focuses on improving quality-of-life aspects and rectifying several bugs . Significant improvements have been made to the AI’s performance around the green. 

The issue where the divot would fly before the ball was hit in online gameplay was addressed, as well, and the method of selecting the AI playing partner in Career mode has been streamlined. Finally, a persistent issue where players would not receive stars on their first attempt at Challenges has been fixed.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters review

Our verdict.

A Trojan horse for EAs subscription golf game, this is an insulting and sickening grab at PC gamers wallets.

The game loads up and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters informs me that I can now purchase Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters. Is this Inception-like advertising an evil way of getting confused customers to buy infinite copies, or just endemic of the laziness behind EA's latest golf-sim update?

It's a bit of both. This is an offline version of EA's Tiger Woods Online game, built using the browserfriendly Unity engine, which enables players to compete in the Masters tournament and exhibition matches without the fear of slicing it in front of people. But it still hooks into the subscription based-Tiger Woods Online, and I don't think I've ever played a clumsier attempt to integrate offline and online.

I was contentedly chipping my way to a par in a Master's game (the golf is still decent, if unchanged since TGO launched in 2010) when I was warned I had ten minutes to save or lose my progress. I ignored it, assuming it was a general message to the entire server, as I was playing offline. The same pop-up appeared at five and two minutes before stopping the game and kicking me back to the desktop. When I tried to return to my offline game it wouldn't allow me access.

When Tour 12 did grudgingly allow reconnection, I poked around online and discovered something sickening: this game doesn't even have a dedicated online mode. It has a three month's membership to Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online, after which you'll have to pay either £3 a month or £25 per year. That's on top of the £30 this glorified demo costs in the first place.

Yet without that membership you'll feel hard done by. Even if it is ugly, easy to play, and attempting to drain your wallet every second, at least there are a good number of online competitions to triple-click your way through. Are they worth the subscription cost? Don't be silly: this is golf. Actually, this is old golf: an old game, repackaged without a good going-over by the greenskeepers. Ratty, tattered, and begging for money from the first time it loads up. They're selling you half a round and charging you more when you get to the ninth.

There might be a good model for a subscription-based golf game out there, but even when this was free-to- play the cost was too high. Now that it's saddled with a pricetag, the bare minimum of polish and one new course, I'm not even sure just telling you to avoid it is enough. As it stands, EA are already giving refunds to people who feel ripped off by what they bought.

The publishers hoped to use the connectivity of the PC to fill their pockets, but in the end it was that connectivity that brought forums and websites together to demand they do better. I can only get behind those dissatisfied customers.

Don't let EA get away with this. Don't buy it, and tell them this isn't good enough.

My Golf Obsession: The 2012 Tiger Woods Masters video game

Without real-life Augusta National on my TV, the virtual version will have to do.

Quick! Before real golf comes back, lemme tell you about how virtual golf has carried me these last few months.

Not only has Tiger Woods beat me many times in the last week — it happens playing a video game with his name in the title — I’ve also been beaten by both Anthony Kim and Bio Kim. Yes, During these COVID times, the virtual world in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 (Masters Edition) has become my sick and twisted reality.

When you fire up a 9-year-old video game, you’re signing up for surprises, and Bio, now infamous for making an obscene gesture and earning a year-long suspension in Korea, was one of those surprises. (Kim was a full-status Tour pro in 2011 and an absolute menace on the video game.)

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 is a relic in that it offers an advanced, segmented journey for the single player (called Road to the Masters) but isn’t sophisticated enough that it employs constant online updates. You’re stuck with the stars and flameouts (see: Jeff Overton) of 2011, and with the rare approval from Augusta National, you can actually win golf’s holy grail: a green jacket.

That feature is one of the greatest things ever offered to the virtual golf space. Augusta National, litigious as ever, has repeatedly shut down online course designers who recreate Amen Corner and the flowery campus on their gaming platform. Thus, this EA Sports video game was a priceless asset during the 2020 Masters that Never Was. Here in Small Town, Wisc., in my parents’ basement, even I could win a green jacket.

To do so, I created my best impression of Boo Weekley, a camo-pants-wearing par machine who gets up-and-down from everywhere in his bright red Presidents Cup sweater. And because I have too much pride, we cranked the difficulty to Tournament Mode. No power boosts for Boo. No button-smashing for maximum backspin. No wearing a green jacket unless you’ve earned it. Mr. Weekley, we’re on the tee.

After breezing through the amateur tour, Weekley notched a win in his third Nationwide Tour start. He may have limped in to a 74, but his win unveiled a fun battlefield promotion: Straight to the PGA Tour! If only life were this easy.

Over the course of many seasons, we progressed slowly but surely toward Augusta National. At one point [ insert SpiderMan meme ], my Weekley even chased after the real Boo Weekley. (I couldn’t catch him.) Eventually, back-to-back wins at the Mediterranean Open (course fits my virtual eye) helped push our hero into the top 100 in the world, earning him that precious invite to Augusta.

Tiger Woods video games have existed for more than 20 years now, first launching with Cyber Tiger on Nintendo 64 in 1999. ( I bought that game, too . Mark O’Meara chipped in too often.) Like most EA Sports franchises, the mid-2000s editions are cherished to this day , but they are also plagued for being so damn easy. It may have been fun shooting 18 or 20 under on Tiger Woods 2004 , reaping the benefits of Peak Tiger and never making a bogey, but thankfully the 2012 version of the franchise added some realism. As it turns out, winning the Masters on Tournament Mode is tough as hell!

Look no further than the game defaulting Boo to a non-camo look once we stepped foot on the grounds. Seriously, the game stripped me of my clothing creativity and gave us a Jeff Maggert-esque grey-over-khaki outfit. That doesn’t pair too well with hunter green.

Anyway, my virtual Weekley is a brilliant ball-striker, similar to the real-life version, but struggles woefully on the green. In our run-up to Augusta, only once had we played 18 holes bogey-free. Green reading is an intricate business on Tournament Mode, as in real life. At virtual ANGC, you’re lagging everything to the hole, even the 5-footers. One hard lip-out begets another. No more chiding Ernie Els for 2016 . To offset some of the difficulty, this is a one-round tournament. It’s hard enough to lead after 18 holes, let alone 72.

Our conquest began with a bogey but quickly turned around as Boo holed out from a greenside bunker on No. 2 for eagle. Back to red numbers! They say that every winner at Augusta National gets some breaks to go their way. Perhaps that’d be one of ours.

Our friend Bio Kim signed for a solid 69. Beatable, but solid. We would add a birdie on 3 to move within one of the lead before going bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie on holes 4-7. What a rollercoaster! After a shameful par on the 8th, this video game showed off its realism again. When my cute wedge into the 9th was just a little TOO cute, it zipped off the false front just like Greg Norman’s in 1996. I’ve watched way too many Masters broadcasts to forget that could happen. Nonetheless, a cheeky pitch helped me make the turn at two under. ALIVE AND WELL.

A brief appreciation of the 10th hole: it should still be the first playoff hole. It’s a great par-4. It requires two very good shots to get close and and an even better putt to earn the birdie, which is exactly what Boo did on this day, tying our man for the lead. It was a brief, tense moment for our virtual hero before the nerves got to him and he pumped his drive into the trees left on 11.

After punching out and pitching on, it was a bogey on 11. One shot back, reaching that treacherous 12th. The 12th wouldn’t be so bad if 11 and 10 didn’t precede it. Those holes being difficult means you teeter on the edge of losing control, only to earn a trip to a swirling wind tunnel.

Unfortunately, Boo Weekley had his Jordan Spieth moment. The ball flew far enough, but it just wasn’t on target, leaking out to the right. One more yard and it may have stayed dry, but it rolled back into that devilish creek. Mr. Weekley would make his triple bogey.

While Weekley and I made a mess of Amen Corner, Phil Mickelson made a classic charge — remember this is 41-year-old Lefty — to finish at four under, beating Eduardo Molinari of all people in a playoff. Mickelson’s fourth green jacket, but his first virtual green jacket. What an honor!

Boo tapped in for a par on 18 and a one-under 71. It was good enough for tie for 11th place and for an invite to next year’s event. We’ve got plenty of work to do until then, and as long as we’re stuck at home we’ll be doing it.
