  • Explore Phu Quoc Island in 3 days, 2 nights

Speak to anyone who’s been to Phu Quoc – the ‘pearl island’ in the south of Vietnam – and they’ll smile in wistful reverie. There’s something so captivating about the tropical destination, which leaves visitors with good memories that last a lifetime. No doubt, the white-sand beaches, relaxed way of life and lush forests are among the main reasons for this indelible impression. Perhaps they’ve been left with a delicious lingering taste from a delicacy sampled at the buzzing night market. Or they’ll simply never forget the service they received at one of the many luxury resorts that’ve changed the face of this once-unknown retreat….

Why not find out for yourself on a short stay on Phu Quoc?

Only got three days? These are the suggested itineraries to ensure it’s your most magical and memorable summer vacation yet…

Day 1: Explore the island’s best beaches

Since the island paradise is most known for its beautiful beaches, visitors often ask: “But which one is THE BEST?” Check out some of the top contenders on your first day to decide…

Go swimming at picturesque Sao Beach

For quality beach time away from the crowds, head south to Sao Beach (Bãi Tắm Sao) near An Thoi Town, about 25km from Phu Quoc's centre. Stretching over 7 km of white-sand and palm-lined shore, Sao Beach is truly a highlight. Entrance and parking are free. The natural shade provided from the trees and entrances created by locals give access to the surrounding pristine forests for some trekking. Visitors often spend the whole day here − swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, kite surfing, and fishing.

phu-quoc-island

Enjoy the freshest catch of the day at Rach Vem fishing village

Another awesome spot is ‘starfish beach’ in Rach Vem fishing village, about 20km north of Duong Dong town. Photographers love this destination, with its calm, crystal-clear waters, floating wooden bridges, stilt raft houses over the sea, and countless red starfish (which visitors are advised not to touch or disturb). As it’s also surrounded by forest, this is a truly scenic, peaceful spot for visitors to relax. By now, you would’ve worked up an appetite. Take your pick from the plentiful seafood caught by the fishermen, which will be cooked on the spot for you to enjoy while gazing at the beautiful blue views.

phu-quoc-island

Relish the sublime beauty of Vietnam’s southernmost islands

The best way to explore the picture-perfect smaller islands in the south is on an island-hopping tour. Your boat will take you to heavenly Mong Tay Island, where you can laze on large swaths of soft sand or relax on a lounger under one of the many shady palm trees. Snorkel or dive at Gam Ghi Island, which boasts one of the best coral reefs in Vietnam. Look out for sea creatures such as barracudas and giant pufferfish. You can snorkel some more at May Rut island, and try your hand at fishing at Thom Island. To keep your appetite satisfied, your guides will whip up a generous lunch for you to enjoy on-board. In the evening, once your tour is finished, sit back and enjoy a refreshing beverage at dusk at one of the island’s popular beach bars, such as Sunset Sanato, Ocsen, or Sunset Beach.

TOP TIP :

From now until 31 December 2022, you can get 5% off (up to 300K VND) for tour bookings valued at a minimum of 900K VND. Simply apply the code DATTOUR when booking.

Day 2: Enjoy the island’s one-of-a-kind activities

Discover the secrets behind the island's famous specialties – pepper and fish sauce.

For over 200 years, Phu Quoc islanders have produced delicious fish sauce. Today, the island is the country’s leading producer of this sauce – a mainstay in Vietnamese cooking. For a fascinating excursion, visit one of the ‘barrel houses’ to see how the sauce is made according to a time-honoured tradition involving anchovies, salt and giant wooden barrels. On your way out, pick up some bottles of the sauce as souvenirs for people back home. Another pantry item the island is known for is its particularly pungent and spicy pepper. Tour one of the plantations to learn how over 1,000 tons of pepper are produced here annually.

Go diving and snorkeling

Owing to the island’s clear water, diving and snorkeling are among the most popular things to do on Phu Quoc. There are several options for diving, for both beginners and experienced divers alike.

Snorkeling is possible during day tours. You can do a boat tour to May Rut Island, Mong Tay  Island and Dam Ngang Island, where you can snorkel among a variety of fish and coral. ( Four Islands Excursion in South Phu Quoc - Day Tour - Exclusive Deal by Traveloka Xperience )

Be awed by the views from the cable car to Hon Thom Island

Phu Quoc boasts a Guinness World Record for the longest non-stop three-rope cable car, which is nearly 8km long. The cable car linking An Thoi Town and Hon Thom Island has got to be seen – and experienced − to be believed. Soar high above the sea and enjoy 360-degree views of the An Thoi Archipelago, jungle-covered mountains, stunning coral reefs, colourful fishing boats and beautiful sandy bays.

phu-quoc-island

Immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of Phu Quoc’s Night Market

On Bach Dang Street, in the heart of Duong Dong Town, you’ll find the Phu Quoc Night Market. During the evening the street is strictly for pedestrians only to browse the 50-plus stalls selling different products, such as accessories and souvenirs, or serving up fresh seafood and other local delicacies. If street food is your thing, you definitely wouldn’t want to miss this market. Afterwards, stroll along the promenade to see the tour boats and locals out enjoying the fresh evening air.

Day 3: Enjoy all-in-one tourism destinations at leading theme parks

At 55 hectares in size, VinWonders Phu Quoc − a theme park located in the Vinpearl Phu Quoc complex – is one of the largest theme parks in Asia. It has over 100 games and shows, so you’d need more than a few days to see them all. If you’re short on time, prioritize visiting the park’s Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc. The animals in this world-class conservation park are free-roaming, offering a unique safari experience in the heart of Southeast Asia. Have fun seeing which of  over 3000 animals and 150 species  you can spot, including lions, tigers, zebras, rhino and giraffe.

If you can’t get enough of the water, you might want to visit the ‘aquatopia’ that is located in Sun World Phu Quoc. In addition to the theme park’s seaside restaurants and activities, such as kayaking, scuba diving and jet-skiing, there’s a water park with a host of fun slides guaranteed to keep kids happy all day. The complex is based in Hon Thom’s nature park, so there’s stunning fresh air and island scenery all around.

The Perfect 3 Day Phu Quoc Itinerary (2023)

the-perfect-phu-quoc-itinerary-and-detailed-island-guide-phenomenalglobe.com

Phu Quoc is a beautiful island in the Gulf of Thailand. Despite being located less than 10 kilometers off the coast of Cambodia , the island actually belongs to Vietnam .

While the island has undergone fast development in recent years and is far from undiscovered, it's still a great place to visit. We ended our Vietnam trip in Phu Quoc and loved our time here.

This 3-day Phu Quoc itinerary will help you plan your trip and make the most of your time on Phu Quoc, happy travels!

Phu Quoc itinerary

Things to know before your Phu Quoc trip

The best time to plan a trip to Phu Quoc is between November and March (the dry season). Temperatures are around 30°C and days are (generally) sunny and clear. Note this is also high season so there will be many other travelers on Phu Quoc as well. If you prefer to travel during the low season and don't mind the occasional shower, April or May are good months to visit as well.

The official currency in Vietnam is the  Vietnamese Dong (VND).   Here  you can find the current exchange rates, at the time of writing €1 is approximately 26.000VND and $1 is approximately 23.000VND.

Yes absolutely! While it's no longer the undeveloped island it was several years ago, Phu Quoc is a beautiful place to visit! There are splendid beaches, a lush green jungle, and picturesque fishing villages.

I personally feel that a 3-day trip to Phu Quoc is the perfect amount of time to spend on the island. I do recommend staying 4 nights so you have three entire days to explore Phu Quoc.

phu-quoc-island-3-day-itinerary-guide-phenomenalglobe.com

How to get to Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc has an international airport located 15 kilometers from Duong Dong, the main town on the island.

There are several flights arriving from different cities within Vietnam (such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Nha Thrang) as well as some international ones.

Click here to book your plane ticket to Phu Quoc

Because Phu Quoc airport is fairly isolated, I recommend booking a private car transfer from the airport to your hotel.

We did this as well and despite the fact that our plane was delayed, our driver was waiting for us and made us feel very welcome in Phu Quoc.

Click here to book your private transfer

You can also get to Phu Quoc by boat, there are multiple daily departures from both Ha Tien as well as Rach Gia.

The ferry takes around 75 minutes, though the journey can take a bit longer in rough conditions.

Click here to book your ferry ticket to Phu Quoc

How to get around Phu Quoc

Dirt road on Phu Quoc

I highly recommend renting a scooter in Phu Quoc ! This will enable you to explore the island at your own pace.

You can stop at all the best places to visit on the island of Phu Quoc without feeling rushed because your tour only allows an hour at a certain location.

Renting a scooter is very affordable, rental prices are usually between $8-$12 a day, depending on the type of bike.

Click here to book your scooter in advance , to make sure there's one available during your Phu Quoc travel dates.

The roads on Phu Quoc used to be mainly dirt roads, however, most of them have been redeveloped and paved in recent years.

While it's a shame there are no more ‘adventure roads' it does make getting from place to place a lot faster (not to mention a lot more comfortable).

Alternatively, you can book this private tour for a hassle-free day of sightseeing in Phu Quoc .

Where to stay in Phu Quoc

There are lots of hotels to choose from in Phu Quoc and there is something for every budget. In the table below you can find my recommendations.

Note: Prices for these hotels depend on the time of year and how far in advance you book. Therefore, the prices mentioned above are a rough indication of the price per night to help you compare the different options. Use ‘click here' to see the latest prices on Agoda and Booking and book ahead to get the best deal.

On a budget: Fortuna Hotel ☆☆

phu quoc 3 island tour

For those looking for a budget hotel in Phu Quoc, the Fortuna hotel  is a good option!

We booked this accommodation for our Phu Quoc trip and really enjoyed our stay. The rooms are spacious and clean, with ensuite bathrooms.

From the hotel, it’s a 20-minute drive to Duong Dong. Not a problem if you rent a scooter but something to keep in mind when booking this hotel.

Rated as one of the best hotels in Phu Quoc, Cassia Cottage is the perfect place to stay. There is a private beach, three swimming pools, beautiful gardens, and luxury cottages.

All cottages are elegantly styled and spacious, with large comfortable beds, modern bathrooms, coffee and tea-making facilities, and several other amenities.

Ho Quoc Pagoda

phu quoc 3 island tour

The Ho Quoc Pagoda (also known as Truc Lam Ho Quoc) is an impressive Buddhist temple. It was built in 2012 and is beautifully located on a small hill overlooking the ocean.

Important: dress modestly when visiting this temple, many people come here to pray and meditate.

Sao Beach on Phu Quoc Island

Sao Beach is your typical tropical beach with soft white sand and a beautiful turquoise ocean.

The beach is over 7 kilometers long, so despite the fact that it's a very popular place to visit in Phu Quoc, there is always a less crowded spot to be found.

There are several bars and restaurants where you can get a drink or grab a bite to eat. As you can expect in a popular place like this, prices are (much) higher than the average price level in Vietnam .

Another downside: Sao Beach has a serious trash problem and it's not uncommon to see lots of plastic washed up on the beach.

That being said, the owner of our hotel told us the government is working on cleaning up the beaches and the ocean. I really hope they do…

Fishing boats at An Thoi Phu Quoc

An Thoi is a village in the south of Phu Quoc. It's also the departure point for boat trips and tours to the An Thoi archipelago with excellent snorkeling opportunities just south of Phu Quoc.

Click here to book a day tour of the An Thoi Islands

Fishing is still very important for the locals living in An Thoi and there are several fish sauce factories in the area. In fact, fish sauce from Phu Quoc is very famous!

Phu Quoc Prison

Phu Quoc Prison is a very difficult place to visit, but an important one nonetheless.

Over 40.000 North Vietnamese soldiers were imprisoned here during the Vietnam War and subjected to the most terrible ways of torture.

Read more information about the prison on the official website .

Phu Quoc itinerary day 2: Western Loop

Itinerary: Long Beach – Dinh Cau Rock and Temple – Ganh Dau beach – Suối Tranh Waterfall

Phu Quoc itinerary map day 2

Long Beach is a very touristy beach on the west coast of Phu Quoc.

Stretching over 20 kilometers and lined with local restaurants and beach resorts it's a highly developed area of the island.

That being said, it's a nice place to relax and spend some time, the views are nice and the water is good for a swim.

If you would like to catch the sunset at Long Beach, consider doing the itinerary for this day in reverse .

Dinh Cau Rock and Dinh Cau Temple

Dinh-Cau-Rock-and-Temple-Phu-Quoc-phenomenalglobe.com

Dinh Cau Rock can be found near Duong Dong Fishing Harbour. It's a rock with a Buddhist shrine built on top of it and it's where local fishermen go to ask for a blessing over their fishing expeditions.

You don't have to spend a lot of time here but it's worth passing by when you're driving along the west coast of the island.

Ganh Dau beach and viewpoint

Ganh Dau is located in the northwest of Phu Quoc and (still) a relativity remote corner of this tropical island.

From the viewpoint at the beach, you can easily see the Cambodian islands that are only a few kilometers away.

So far Ganh Dau beach hasn't been overdeveloped, only time will tell if it manages to stay that way.

Banh Xeo in Ganh Dau village on Phu Quoc island

The town Ganh Dau is a good place for lunch, we had some very cheap but delicious Bánh xèo (a crispy, stuffed rice pancake).

I believe we paid just 30.000 VND for the two of us together.

Suối Tranh Waterfall

Another great stop on your Phu Quoc road trip is the Suối Tranh Waterfall. Avoid going during the weekend as it gets very crowded, during the week it's usually fine.

Admire the 4-meter tall waterfall, hike one of the jungle trails and explore bat cave, a large cave about 50 meters deep.

After you've visited Suoi Tranh Waterfall, drive back to your accommodation to relax after a beautiful day of Phu Quoc sightseeing.

Phu Quoc itinerary day 3: Eastern Loop

Itinerary: Ham Ninh mountain trail – Ham Ninh fishing village – Drinks at Kiki Coconut Resort – Bai Thom – Duong Dong night market

Phu Quoc itinerary map day 3

Ham Ninh mountain trail (also called Mount Heaven)

If you love the outdoors as much as we do, a great Phu Quoc activity is hiking Ham Ninh Mountain.

This 6-kilometer trail through the forest goes to the 300-meter high top of the second-highest mountain on Phu Quoc, aka Mount Heaven.

Hiking this trail takes about 3 hours and involves crossing a rickety wooden log bridge. You can find more detailed information about this track here .

Ham Ninh village

Ham Ninh is one of the oldest villages in Phu Quoc. Diving for pearls and sea cucumbers and fishing has traditionally been the main source of income for most locals, however, tourism also created lots of jobs in recent years.

Ham Ninh is a great place to eat fresh seafood (boiled crabs are a local specialty) and to watch hustle and bustle at Bai Vong port, a long pier stretching far into the sea.

Drinks at Kiki Coconut Resort

Kiki Coconut Resort on Phu Quoc

The next stop on your itinerary is Kiki Coconut Resort. Be sure to spend some time there, relaxing in one of the hammocks while enjoying fresh lemon juice and the beautiful ocean views.

Enjoy the views between Kiki Coconut and Bai Thom

When we visited Phu Quoc, the stretch of road between Kiki Coconut and Bai Thom was marked on our map as an ‘adventure road'. And adventurous it was!

On our scooter, we crossed rickety bamboo bridges and dried-up streams with huge rocks and boulders.

We couldn't help but laughed at our clumsiness because we encountered several Vietnamese families (four people on a scooter) who did not seem to have any difficulties driving around the countless bumps and potholes.

Unfortunately, the adventure road between Kiki Coconut and Bai Thom, as well as many similar dirt roads that could be found in Phu Quoc, is no more…

Ocean view near Bai Thom, Phu Quoc

The coast road has been paved making this East Phu Quoc loop a lot quicker to drive but it also takes away part of the experience.

Still, the views are lovely and this corner of the island is a nice area to explore.

Eat your way around Phu Quoc Night Market

End your Phu Quoc 3-day itinerary with a stop at the Phu Quoc Night Market in Duong Dong town.

Keep an eye out for the busiest food stalls (those with lots of locals lining up) to find the best local dishes, fresh fruit, and snacks. The market opens around 5 pm.

Most welcome Emily! I wish you a wonderful trip around Phu Quoc:-)

Wednesday 1st of November 2017

We have just ridden the 'Adventure Road' section of this itinerary on the eastern loop and sadly it is no more. It's just a nasty construction site for the new resort road. We are sat on the beach at Kiki Coconut right now which thankfully is still lovely. It's very quiet, we are the only ones here on Nov 1st which is the start of high season.

By next year the adventure road will be paved but right now whilst under construction I would avoid it!!!

Hello Peter,

Thank you for letting me know! And how sad the adventure road is no more and the big construction projects on Phu Quoc continue... I will adjust it in my post. Glad you at least got to experience the peace and quiet at Kiki Coconut!

Very informative post and the photos in the post were awesome. I loved the post, just wished I could be there when I close my eyes...

Thanks Samuel! Phu Quoc is great, I hope you get to visit soon:-)

Monday 1st of August 2016

Most of the roads on Phu Quoc are now paved. My favorite journey is riding up from Ham Ninh village to Bai Thom, but they will also pave this soon because there is a new resort being built up in Bai Thom by a Thai developer... so see it while you can!

Oh no! My favorite road was the adventure road, exactly the part you describe between Ham Ninh and Bai Thom... Such a shame the roads will al be paved soon:-(

Friday 6th of November 2015

I'll be visiting Phu Quoc in mid-December and I cannot wait! Beautiful beaches + amazing Vietnamese food sounds like heaven!

It is a little paradise indeed:-) Enjoy your trip!

Phu Quoc travel guide: an island paradise in Vietnam

Vietnam’s largest island is known for its endless beaches and pristine national park.

P hu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island and sits off the Cambodian coast on the eastern edge of the Gulf of Thailand. It’s a much-loved destination among tourists, foreign and domestic, and caters to all budgets.

  • SEE MORE A foodie tour of Vietnam’s top cities
  • SEE MORE Hoi An travel guide: 48 hours of food, shopping and culture

Famous for its endless palm-dotted, ivory sanded beaches, more than half of the island is pristine national park. This creates a glorious vision of deep jungle green fringed with pale cream beaches, the whole surrounded by an ocean of jade fading to deep blue.

All that said, as with much of Vietnam, the construction crews are moving in and large resorts are springing up all over the place. The island has changed dramatically over 10 years and will continue to do so – go soon, while there’s plenty of space to get lost, dirt tracks to drive down for hours to hidden beaches, friendly faces everywhere and delicious, local bars, cafes, street food and restaurants.

AsiaDreamPhoto/Alamy Stock Photo

The beaches

Much of what happens on the island is focused on Long Beach (known locally as Duong Duong) and the majority of beach clubs, restaurants, shops and bars are located here. It’s buzzy but not overwhelmingly so and there’s plenty of space to hang out.

If your hotel isn’t located right on the water, the beach clubs are a great place to spend your time and some offer free sun loungers for those buying food and drinks throughout the day. Even at the expensive end, these places are super-cheap by Western standards, with local beers starting at around £2. That said, they do tend to pump out the tunes (causing some tension with local hotels) particularly as the sweltering day turns to dusk and the sun dips toward the sea. So, if that’s not your vibe, head further afield. There are miles of beaches away from it all.

Further north up the coast from Long Beach is Ong Lang, home to a few, quieter resorts, the sand dotted with limestone rocks and the occasional bar or restaurant. Of note is Mango Bay, a hotel that has a fabulous restaurant “On The Rock” with a deck perched (you guessed it) on rocks over the ocean. It does a great line in grilled and raw seafood alongside Vietnamese classics and steaks with coconut crackers, herb salads and our fave, sticky rice cooked with a deeply savoury beef jus.

imageBROKER.com GmbH & Co. KG/Alamy Stock Photo

A lot of guides recommend Starfish Beach, but it’s a bit past it these days; the most exciting part of it was the half-hour drive on a broad, red sand track through dense jungle. The sea was muddy, the starfish were either very shy or had gone somewhere else on our visit and the restaurants were nothing to write home about.

The south is home to some of the island’s best beaches – in part because of a steady, cooling breeze which rolls in off the sea, whisking away some of that sticky heat. Broad swathes of beach are largely quiet with few people, gentle waves and a cooler sea temperature.

Tieu Bao Trương/Alamy Stock Photo

Eating and drinking

Eating out is an inherent part of the culture here – from plastic stools around food carts on the street to modern takes on classic dishes and high end luxury seafood spots – there are countless options for dining. A few must-tries on the island, available all over, are the Phu Quoc-style herring salad with onions, garlic, chilli and coconut; bún kèn (ken noodles) with herbs, pounded fish, shredded green papaya and cucumber over rice noodles with a coconut and lemongrass broth; and grilled sea urchins with spring onions and peanuts.

I’m usually a stickler for local stuff but across Vietnam a new breed of young chefs, who have learnt the classics, are putting their modern take on things. Saigonese Eatery is at the top of this game; an ultra-hip venue, poured concrete floors, white walls and a vaulted warehouse roof with an in-house bakery and an open kitchen. The menu is eclectic – some classic Viet set menus sit alongside fried chicken baos, crispy squid with satay mayo and a killer wagyu burger with “Pho” flavours, inspired by the world famous Vietnamese soup.

Things to see and do

You can do all the usual water sports here and Phu Quoc is home to some of Vietnam’s best diving with the core season from October to May. There are waterfalls to hike to, fishing trips, temples and pagodas, the world’s longest cable car out to the small island of Hon Thom (it’s 8km if you’re interested and takes around 15 minutes), and a knock-off version of Disneyland called “VinWonders”. Mainly, Phu Quoc is about downtime, about relaxing, reading, snoozing in the shade of palm trees by the lapping sea, eating well and inexpensively.

IHG Hotels & Resorts

Where to stay: best hotels

The island has everything from backpacker hostels for a few bucks a night to ultra luxe hotels. The jewel in the crown is the Regent – a stunning, brutalist megalith of utopian splendour. At ground level, cavernous hallways are surrounded by koi-filled pools, sweeping streams of linen billow over a vast pool that runs virtually to the sea overlooked by a gorgeous, teak and linen-decked Rice Market restaurant.

Accommodation comprises private pool villas so main swimming spots are quiet – particularly the long, slender roof-top infinity pool serviced by the gorgeous Fu Bar turning out a killer line in refreshing variants on the theme of gin and tonic. Uninterrupted sunset views are accompanied by relaxed tropical disco tunes and well-heeled party-goers.  Rates start from £324; ihg.com

MGallery Hotel Collection

La Veranda was the first of the upscale properties to break ground in Phu Quoc; located in the centre of town, it’s a veritable oasis of calm. Down a short track, set back from the road, the tall French-inspired open-air reception leads on to crude brick paths that snake through gorgeous tropical plants – tall palms, spiky snake plants and broad leafed monsteras, dotted with lights and water features from which frogs croak.

Rooms are located throughout the grounds or in the new wing which has fantastic views of the beach that runs up to the hotel. A beautiful, tranquil pool, tiled in a shade of cerulean, is served by Le Jardin, La Veranda’s beach-side restaurant serving up Vietnamese and Western classics. Rooms are classy – featuring French tiles, dark mahogany, large bathrooms and either garden terraces or balconies.  Rates for a deluxe garden room start from £115; laverandaresorts.com

The JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa sits away from it all on the southern tip of the island. It’s only 20 minutes from the main drag if you’re wanting to head out for dinner but the hotel has it all. The location means it gets beautiful cool winds off the sea – a welcome respite from the heat. It’s a quirky place with a retro feel, designed by American architect Bill Bensley (who else?!) and themed around a university. Lots of educational puns abound although staff are very keen to tell you you won’t need to do any studying while you’re here.

Pools line the palm-fringed beach with dedicated spaces for kids. The grounds are expansive, well modelled, with a rather utopian vibe; lush plants and pastels everywhere, gentle music pumped throughout. The food here is fantastic – in particular breakfast. Rooms have fantastic views over the trees to the ocean, with huge, marble-clad wetrooms, balconies and giant, comfy beds facing the windows.  Rates start from £189 room only, based on two people sharing; marriott.com

Getting there and around

Most people opt to fly into Phu Quoc’s airport, now an international one, and it’s a cheap, quick flight from any of Vietnam ’s major cities. We journeyed in from Danang and out to Ho Chi Minh to catch a flight back to the UK. Getting about the island is a doddle – GrabTaxis are incredibly inexpensive and cover the island – you won’t wait more than a few minutes for that gloriously air-conditioned ride.
