Don’t let the term midtown confuse you! Midtown Manhattan describes on the one hand the whole area from 14th Street to 59th Street (at Central Park) and includes more than 10 neighborhoods like Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen, the Theatre District and the Flatiron District . Below Midtown Manhattan begins Downtown Manhattan , with Uptown Manhattan bordering it to the north.

At the same time, Midtown is also a neighborhood within the Midtown Manhattan area.

How to Get To Midtown Manhattan

• Metro: It really depends where in Midtown Manhattan you would like to visit. All of the trains go right into the city. For main locations such as Time Square, take the 7   N Q R W A C E or the 1 2 3 . If you want to go to Grand Central, you can take the 7   S , or the 4 5 6 . For Bryant Park, you can take the 7 and the B D F M lines.
• Hop on Hop Off Bus : Stop 1 to 4, 14 and 15 of the downtown loop of BIG BUS (“Union Square”) or stop 1 to 5 of the downtown loop of Gray Line Sightseeing (“Union Square”). There are so many things to do in Midtown Manhattan that it would be impossible for someone to go through all the attractions in just one day. With so many NYC attractions, tours, and sights, it would take multiple days and maybe even multiple visits to the city. With that being said, it’s ok if you don’t get to experience everything.

Enjoy Live-Music at Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is one of New York’s most iconic landmarks. Its construction was completed in 1930 after a close race with the Chrysler Building. The 86th floor of the 102 story building serves as an observation desk that gives you a stunning view of the city.

When? Thursday to Saturday, 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Bryant Park: Have a good time in my favorite park in Midtown Manhattan

Bryant Park is located right in central Manhattan and is a quiet oasis between 40th and 42nd Street. Bryant Park is right in the cetner of Midtown Manhattan between 40th and 42nd Street, yet it still lends you the peace and quiet you need to get away for a few moments from the bustling city. With many small cafés dotted throughout the park this is the perfect place to unwind or relax when the weather is nice. The large meadow in the middle of the park is often used for sunbathing or reading.

In the winter, Bryant Park ice skating is popular as the green lawn turns into an ice rink and the pathways become the Bryant Park Winter Village . Here, you’ll find many holiday vendors that sell holiday ornaments, souvenirs, and food. And if you’re in New York this summer , don’t miss the free movie screenings in Bryant Park!

New York Public Library

You’ve probably seen the iconic library from movies and photos. The beautiful New York Public Library is located right next to Bryant Park. As one of the most popular libraries in the United States, it is not only a destination for students, professors, or bookworms, but many New York visitors come to the public library to see this impressive building. For us, the old building, the smell of the books, and the silence make this place magical.

You will find it at 42nd Street 5th Avenue, right next to Bryant Park . Just like the park, the library is a great way to escape the sounds of the metropolis. In many films, the Public Library has already stood out. Many will recognize it from the hit series and movie  Sex and the City .

The NYPL is a popular wedding venue as well. In the summer months, you will most likely see a wedding couple. Rockefeller Jr. took down 228 properties in the middle of Manhattan to build a city within the city in the 1930s. Fourteen skyscrapers were part of this huge complex, including the General Electric Building, Radio City Music Hall, the Christie Auction House, and the NBC television station.

Rockefeller Center spans three blocks between Fifth Avenue and Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue), West 47th Street and 52nd Street. With a height of 259.1m, the GE Building is the highest of the building complex. During the holiday season when the famous Christmas tree is set up, Rockefeller Center is bombarded with foot traffic.  Top of the Rock is well worth the visit.

Have Lunch at the United Nations Headquarter

The four-building skyscraper complex on the East River, built between 1949 and 1953, is home to the United Nations and also the headquarters for UN agencies such as Unesco and Unicef. In 1946, when the United Nations was looking for a place to build its new headquarters in New York, it was originally planned to be built on the grounds of the 1939 World’s Fair at Flushing Meadow Park in Queens.

But when a project called X-City on the eastern border of Manhattan failed, John D. Rockefeller Jr. bought the seven-acre property and donated it to the United Nations. The entire area has been declared an international territory and is not officially part of the United States. The United Nations Plaza has a public park on the East River and is peppered with works of art donated from various countries. It includes “Swords to Plowshares” by Yevgeny Vuchetich, from the Soviet Union in 1959, and a section of the Berlin Wall.

In front of the UN headquarters, the flags of each member country are lined up on First Avenue – starting with Afghanistan on 48th Street to Zimbabwe on 42nd Street.

230 Fifth Avenue Rooftop Bar

230 Fifth is arguably the most famous rooftop bar in New York City. It is well known for its stunning views of the Empire State Building great cocktails and large outside seating area. Whether in summer or winter, the 230 Fifth is always a good idea. The sunset is always enchanting and in the winter cuddled under blankets and heated mushrooms has also something to sit.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Midtown Manhattan is also home to famous St. Patrick’s Cathedral.   The neo-Gothic church of stone and marble was consecrated in 1879 to the patron saint of the Irish. It can occupy up to 2,500 people to find peace at any time of the day. It is the eleventh largest church in the world and the largest neo-Gothic style cathedral in the United States. The slender towers rise almost majestically to a height of over 100 metres. and offers an impressive retreat in the middle of 5th Avenue.

FAO Schwarz in New York

FAO Schwarz is unlike any other toy store and a great destination in NYC this holiday season. Take your kids or just feel like a kid again when you enter the amazing collection of unique toys and life-sized stuffed animals.

FAO Schwarz is the oldest toy store in the United States and with its location right in front of the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center, it’s something you don’t want to miss this holiday season in New York. Don’t miss the famous clock on the stairs. Also, you can play “The Big Piano” on the floor (known from the movie “Big”).

Grand Central Terminal

Grand Central Terminal is located close to  Fifth Avenue  and therefore great for shopping. The largest train station in the world is also the most visited building in New York. It’s walking distance from the  Empire State Building , the Chrysler Building and  Rockefeller Center.  Every day, 750,000 people pass New York’s most famous station.

Here is a little tip. Look up at the ceiling while you’re in the terminal. The ceiling has been painted mirror-inverted. The reason: the painter had kept the card upside down! Its official version, of course, was that it was wanted and the view was not painted from below, but from the perspective of God – that is, from above.

M&M's World

Beware, danger of addiction! You will find nothing but colourful treats from M&M’s on several floors. Almost every colour is there and you can choose freely from all M&M’s. How? It’s very easy: in huge transparent plexiglass tubes you can see the varieties, which can then be easily filled into bags. The thing you will hear most is something like “Come on, I want to try some of that!”

Apple Store 5th Ave

The Apple Store in New York is an institution and is on the shopping list of many. The first thing that comes to mind is the Apple Flagship Store on 5th Avenue in Central Park – the glass cube with the illuminated Apple symbol is very much at the forefront of design.

Refinery Rooftop

A very small rooftop bar very close to Bryant Park with a nice view of the Empire State Building is the Refinery Rooftop from the Refinery Hotel. This two-story rooftop bar in Midtown isn’t particularly large, but it certainly has its appeal due to the combination of location and quality of the cocktails. 

Visit the world-famous Theater District in New York and see a Broadway Show

Broadway is the mecca of this type of entertainment and it’s located here right here in Midtown. New York Broadway shows thrills the masses and it’s considered the birthplace of the late 18th-century musical. Musicals that are shown in New York are long-term box-office hits, such as the Phantom of the Opera , as well as modern pieces, such as Disney’s Aladdin  or  the Lion King . What’s unique are the many old theaters in which the shows are performed, which gives Broadway a special charm and ambiance.

Every year, Broadway brings in new shows to give it a refresh. It is often decided within a few weeks whether the production will remain on Broadway or will be discontinued. If the numbers do not perform as expected, the shows will be replaced. For example, the musical Rocky, or Spiderman were replaced.

Tickets for one of the musicals are always a great gift idea when you’re on vacation to New York. Every show is always well attended and often sold out. Our personal favorite is the show, Aladdin. Madison Square Garden - All Access Tour

Midtown Manhattan is home to probably the most iconic stadium in the world. Madison Square Garden (MSG) , nicknamed “The Garden” bills itself as the “world’s most famous arena” and arguably so. MSG is home to the New York Knicks , the New York Rangers , and was once home to the WNBA team, NY Liberty. Just to give you perspective on how famous this arena is, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier fought here and was dubbed “The Fight of the Century”.

Aside from sporting events, the arena has hosted some of the biggest shows and celebrities in the world. From Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston to Jay-Z and Drake, every major talent has performed here. Whoever performs here is a bonafide celebrity.

Personally, we have attended several New York Knicks games and the atmosphere in the arena is always great – even for those who are not into basketball, it is always an experience. New York is considered the “Mecca of basketball”. We also experienced several Rangers games and was also very exciting!!

01 Central Park

Central Park spans from Midtown Manhattan all the way up to Harlem. There are about 340 hectares of land and is a popular meeting place for New Yorkers. With about 35 million visitors per year, the man-made park is an attraction not only for tourists. New Yorkers love Central Park and its tranquility. Many events are held here such as the NYC Marathon. There are also tons of green spaces, walking lanes, and bike lanes. Central Park is home to Sheep’s Meadow, Bow Bridge, Bethesda Terrace, Central Park Zoo, and many other things as well.

02 Central Park in Winter

Central Park should not be missing from any Things to Do in New York in winter! The green lung of the city turns into a true winter wonderland during the cold season. It is therefore also a popular destination for New Yorkers. Stroll through the park under snow-covered trees and let yourself be enchanted by the play of lights on the frozen water surfaces in the evening.

Walking through Central Park in the cold is magical! If there’s snow, it’s even more amazing.

If you want to be more adventurous, start in Harlem and walk down Central Park towards Midtown. Too often we catch ourselves starting on Fifth Avenue at the Plaza Hotel in Central Park. There is so much more to explore than just that part of Central Park.

03 American Radiator Building

Located just off Bryant Park, the American Radiator Building is the building with the striking black granite and gold facade. It was built in the late 1920s and has typical Art Deco features, such as vertical lines, abstract patterns and ornate ornaments.

04 Beekman Tower

Designed by John Mead Howells, the Beekman Tower (also known as the Panhellenic Tower) was built between 1927 and 1928. The Art Deco skyscraper is located at the corner of First Avenue and East 49th Street in Midtown Manhattan and has a total of 26 floors.

The building was designed with many setbacks and bevels at the corners. The sculptural ornaments in Art Deco style with Gothic influences are designed by Rene Paul Chambellan. Since 1998, the Beekman Tower is officially one of the landmarks of New York City.

05 Belasco Theatre

The Belasco Theatre is one of the oldest theaters in New York. It opened back in 1907 under the name Stuyvesant Theatre. The expensive construction was financed by entrepreneur David Belasco, who gave it his own name three years later.

One of the greatest actors of our time, Marlon Brando, was discovered here when he played a leading role in the play Truckline Cafe in 1964. In 2019, the film The Irishman by Martin Scorcese premiered here when the theater became a movie theater, and the film was screened for a month.

06 Broadway Theatre

The Broadway Theatre is one of the very few theaters in New York that is actually on Broadway. It has had an eventful past, has had four other names, and has been the setting for many famous musicals, such as Evita, Les Misérables, King Kong, and, most recently, West Side Story.

Opened on December 24, 1924, it is recognizable from afar as the “Broadway Theatre,” with letterings that extend from the first to the seventh floor of the building.

08 Bryant Park Film Festival

One of the best things to do in July in New York is visiting the free Bryant Park Film Festival and picnic performances in Bryant Park. In the heart of Manhattan , people gather in the summer months with blankets and chairs they’ve brought themselves to relax at the outdoor movie theater and concerts by the New York Philharmonics. Bryant Park is just under a 5 minute walk from Times Square , surrounded by tall trees, so it’s a bit secluded from the rest, but you’re still in the middle of it all: Awesome!

09 Bryant Park Studios

Just off Bryant Park, next to the New York Public Library, is another Beaux Arts-style building: Bryant Park Studios. Like many others on this list, it is an official historic landmark.

It is an office building with some space that can be booked for exhibitions. Bryant Park Studios opened in 1901, and the architect was Charles Alonzo Rich, who designed it in the Beaux Arts style with his architectural firm Lamb & Rich.

Just a few steps from here stands the American Radiator Building, which is one of the most beautiful Art Deco buildings in New York City.

10 Chelsea Piers

All sports fans should definitely go to the Chelsea Piers – these include Piers 59, 60 and 61 between 17th and 23rd Street. The complex consists of bowling alleys, climbing walls, fitness studios, basketball courts, an ice skating and skating rink and an indoor swimming pool.

11 Chrysler Building Observation Deck

It was discussed for a long time and now it has finally become reality: The Chrysler Building is to get an observation deck! This is to be built on the 61st floor and transform the current north and south terrace into an observation deck with a view over Midtown, the East River and One Vanderbilt Summit.

12 Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is the most famous attraction in New York City. When most people think of NYC, this landmark is usually the first thing that pops into their head. It’s an iconic skyscraper and has been arguably the face of the city. It should definitely be a part of every trip to the city since it features two observation decks! The ABC Kitchen serves Slow Food – the opposite of fast food and a declaration of love for our planet. Only the freshest ingredients, supplied by local farmers, are put on the plate. The dishes change seasonally and are free of pesticides, antibiotics, hormones and genetic engineering. The prices are more than reasonable for the quality of the ingredients and the service.

ABCV is a plant-based restaurant that features many vegan dishes, in addition to being fully vegetarian. The spot is decorated elegantly but with a modern twist. There are golden chandeliers, among other handing lights, that provide lighting from above. And the space features many light, pastel colors.

Although ABCV serves everything from ice cream to tomato soup, they’re often praised for their dips. Their green hummus, in particular, seems to be a fan favorite and it is served with whole-grain pita.

05 ANA Bar & Eatery

ANA’s at Hudson Yards offers something for everyone. You can have a delicious breakfast including fresh coffee and pastries or enjoy a nice lunch meal with farm-to-table foods or pizza.

At 4:00 PM the place turns into a perfect happy hour spot for everyone who likes signature cocktails, wine, craft beers on tap and pizza.

If you’re a hot chocolate lover like me, then NYC won’t disappoint you. For a rich and dark hot chocolate that feels like a warm hug, I can only recommend heading over to Jacques Torres Chocolate. Trust me, it’s a chocoholic’s dream come true. 

They have two locations: one in Grand Central Station on Lexington (Address: 17 Grand Central Terminal) and one in DUMBO (Address: 66 Water Street).

If you prefer something lighter and thinner, then Levain Bakery offers a cup that’s just as comforting but maybe not as heavy. Either way, you’re in for a treat that’s perfect for the chilly NYC weather.

Shopping in Midtown

Shopping in New York can be overwhelming as there are tons of stores in this city. Times Square has some big stores such as H&M, Uniqlo, and Levis. Then you have Herald Square and 34th Street which is home to the most store in the US, Macy’s Department Store . For high-end luxury shopping, then shopping on Fifth Avenue would be your best bet. This street is home to designer stores such as Gucci, Tiffany’s, Coach, and many more. Fifth Avenue is also home to the Apple Store which reopened in 2019 from renovations.

Where to shop in Midtown Manhattan

From 34th to 35th Street between Broadway and 7th Avenue is the legendary and huge department store, Macy’s. The building is 11 floors high – including a café, McDonald’s, and Starbucks. Macy’s at Herald Square is one of the most famous department stores in the world and is definitely the biggest. A number of brands such as Michael Kors, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger, Burberry, and many more extend on the seemingly endless sales area.

Macy’s is filled with jewelry, handbags, jeans, dresses, household goods, a large well-stocked cosmetics department, and a complete floor full of shoes. In order to avoid the huge crowd that visits the department stores daily, we recommend you come early and during the week. Be sure to head up the ancient escalator to the 11th floor, which has been in operation since its opening in 1901. Macy’s at Herald Square is an icon you do not want to miss.

The Fifth Avenue Apple Store is the most popular Apple Store in the city. You won’t miss the store because the store entrance is this huge and beautifully-made glass cube. It’s also right across from The Plaza Hotel and Central Park. As you enter the store, you’re greeted with a lot of greenery giving the store a clean aesthetic. You’re also greeted with this amazing spiral staircase that takes you down to the store floor.

The M & M’s Store in Times Square is a real hot spot that you should definitely check out. Since 2006, tourists have come here to fill their bags with M & M’s. This is a personal paradise for someone that has a sweet tooth. In addition to chocolate, there are also many souvenirs from New York, for example, a Statue of Liberty in M & M’s style. So come by and choose between all the colors and different sorts of treats.

You’ll probably recognize their old store location in movies such as “Big”, “Heart & Soul” and “Chopsticks”. FAO Schwarz’s  interior was the inspiration for Duncan’s Toy Chest in the movie “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York”. Aside from its film features, this toy store in NYC moved their store location to Rockefeller Center and is perfect for kids. It’s a hot-spot during the holiday season as well.

Nordstrom Flagship Store NYC

The Nordstrom Flagship store in NYC opened in 2019 and is the first Nordstrom for women in the city. It was a big move because the area is already saturated with multiple department stores but it also shows how successful Nordstrom is becoming. Nordstrom Men’s store is located right across the street.

Shopping on Fifth Avenue NYC

Just like we mentioned above, Fifth Avenue in NYC is loaded with designer stores and is one of the best shopping in New York destinations. You have Bergdorf Goodmans which has two separate stores across the street from each other. Each store is individually catered to women and men. Right down the block is Sak’s Fifth Avenue which is another luxury department store. Tiffany’s is also another store on Fifth Avenue. Other stores on this infamous street are the likes of Gucci, Coach, Louis Vuitton , Victoria’s Secret, and many more. For sports, Niketown NYC and Adidas are located here as well. Shopping on Fifth Avenue definitely won’t take a day so it’s best to plan ahead of time.

Like we mentioned before, Midtown is huge and can be very overwhelming since there are so many things to do in Midtown. Depending on your length of stay, it can be difficult to figure out where to start first. It’s impossible to see all of Midtown in just one or two days. You’ll most likely need multiple days to experience this very busy area. However, if you follow this recommendation, we can assure you that your visit to the neighborhood will be smooth and fun.

Our recommended itinerary

• Have breakfast at Blank Slate NYC – This small cafe which has a sit-in section and caters to take-out as well is located on the border of Midtown and the Flatiron District. Their items are very good and one thing you’ll notice is that their ingredients are of high-quality and nutritious.   (121 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10016)
• Visit an observation deck – Either visit the Empire State Building , SUMMIT One Vanderbilt or  Top of the Rock to see great views of Manhattan. That’s the reason you came here right?
• Shop on Fifth Avenue – This street is filled with many high-end stores as well as your favorite mainstream shopping stores. You’ll find jewelry, clothing, and even electronics along this street. (Fifth Avenue – 42nd Street to 59th Street)
• Lunch at Black Tap NYC – Black Tap NYC is an amazing burger spot but is also famous for its crazy milkshakes. One of their key items on the menu is their Bam Bam Milkshake which is loaded with Fruity Pebbles along with your classic strawberry milkshake. 5. Rockefeller Center/Top of the Rock

Rockefeller Center is famous for so many reasons, including the world-famous Christmas Tree lighting in the winter, the rollerskating/ice skating rink during the summer, its shops, it being steps away from Radio City Music Hall and so much more. For October , definitely make sure to see Robert Indiana’s art pieces, including the iconic LOVE sculpture , on display throughout the Rockefeller Center campus (only through October 24, 2023!) .

6. “Echoes – A Voice from Unchartered Waters” Installation

This interactive sound and light installation — in the form of a 55-foot-long steel whale — is the Garment District’s latest public art piece! The luminous creation comes from artist, designer and researcher Mathias Gmachl and is a co-production of the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership with MuseumsQuartier Wien and the LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura. Find it on the Broadway plazas in the Garment District between 38th and 39th Street.

7. Empire State Building

One of NYC’s most recognizable buildings in its skyline is one of our favorite attractions to visit in Midtown. Their 86th floor observation deck offers 360-degree views of New York, Brooklyn, Queens, and beyond! Plus, there’s awesome exhibits on the way up that tell the tale of NYC’s history and the construction process behind the famous skyscraper.

10. New York Public Library – Stephen A. Schwarzman Building

Stop by one of NYC’s most beautiful libraries , the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of the NYPL. Pass by the iconic marble lion guardians and cozy into the grand Rose Main Reading Room, where many scholars and authors have spent hours and hours! It’s great for book lovers and tourists alike.

1. Le Bernardin

Le Bernardin is an iconic NYC French restaurant that you should definitely check out. Not only is it Michelin-starred , but they’ve also received more James Beard Awards than any other restaurant in New York City. 2. Urban Hawker

4. Tony’s Di Napoli

For an Italian restaurant recommendation, head to Tony’s Di Napoli, who’s been serving some of the most authentic Southern Neapolitan cuisine for years. Their menu ranges from pasta to seafood, and has something for everyone! There’s also an Upper East Side location if you end up venturing a little further Uptown. See full menu here .

Step into the elegantly designed Art Deco space of Hutong, where the Northern Chinese plates of cuisine are something to write home about! Combining the influences of New York and Shanghai, you can feast on their dim sum , roasted pecking duck, seafood, and so much more. Marea is one of the most romantic restaurants in NYC , and their Italian-meets-New York dishes are still very much the talk of the town. Particularly their octopus and bone marrow fusilli , which continues to be one of NYC’s most talked about pasta dishes is always worth the try. 7. The GRILL

The Grill comes from the same team as Carbone, so you know the prices are high and the food prepared with care. This NYC steakhouse will serve you the finest of meats, and even do it table side. 8. Gabriel Kreuther

Named after Chef Gabriel Kreuther, his Michelin-starred French restaurant in Midtown Manhattan certainly doesn’t disappoint. Complete with a stunning dining room and sweeping range of Alsatian cuisine, it’s definitely worth a visit. We recommend doing it all… from the foie gras to the cheese trolley to the cocktails. 9. Halal Guys

You’ve probably seen this famous food truck on social media, and The Halal Guys in Midtown is worth it! You’ll probably have to wait in a line for it, but it’s all worth it when you have their famous platters of chicken and gyro over rice or falafel sandwiches in hand. It’s perfect for a meal on-the-go as you’re sightseeing.

3. Fifth Avenue

Stroll down Fifth Avenue and window shop among the world’s most iconic flagship stores like Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, and more. 15 Fun Things to Do in Midtown, NYC (Beyond Times Square)

Home to many of the most famous sights in all of New York, Midtown may be far from the trendiest neighborhood in the city… but it’s one that virtually all visitors to NYC will visit at least once, and there is absolutely no shortage of interesting things to do in Midtown.

It also happens to be our accidental stomping grounds in NYC: due to having a wonderful friend who lives a few blocks from Grand Central and lets us crash with him when we visit, we end up spending quite a bit of time in Midtown during all our trips to New York.

We teamed up with Moon Travel Guides to share a quick rundown of what you can find in Midtown–from the iconic to the (slightly more) under the radar.

If you make a list of the top, say, 20 things to do in Manhattan without knowing the layout of the city, it’s very easy to plan a day that involves seeing Central Park in the morning, visiting the Statue of Liberty in the afternoon, and seeing a Broadway show at night–but the logistics of that day would be a nightmare of long subway or cab rides.

Much better to plan your trip Moon’s way: pick a neighborhood, and focus on one place at a time.

For us, today–that’s Midtown.

Top Things to Do in Midtown NYC

Midtown is home to some of the most famous tourist destinations in not only New York City, but in the entire world.

If you’ve ever planned to visit any of these five iconic sights, you’ve planned to visit Midtown.

Empire State Building

Once the tallest building in the world, visitors have been flocking to the Empire State Building since 1931 in order to appreciate what is arguably the best view of NYC around.

If you’re hoping to soak in some excellent skyline views, you won’t be disappointed by adding a visit to the top of the Empire State Building to your list of things to do in Midtown.

Times Square

The square where night never arrives: walk through Times Square at midnight, and the entire place is still so bright that it almost still feels like daytime.

Crowded and crawling with pickpockets, Times Square definitely has a bad rap among New York locals… but it’s still a sight worth seeing once in your life.

Plus, if you’re planning on snagging tickets to a Broadway show during your trip to New York, odds are you’ll pass right by anyway!

Fifth Avenue

Home to some of the most iconic storefronts in the world, including Tiffany & Co., Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue, Fifth Avenue is a shopper’s paradise and an interesting destination even for those not looking to make a purchase!

Moon New York City outlines some less shopping-heavy highlights of Fifth Avenue, including St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the iconic Plaza Hotel, so be sure to bring it along when hunting down the sights!

Rockefeller Center

Rockefeller Center is best known for two things: its gigantic annual Christmas tree, and the view from the top (aka–The Top of the Rock).

Both of these things are well worth seeing, but be sure to stop by regardless to check out the Atlas statue and the lovely surrounding area! 

Radio City Music Hall is right around the corner, and people looking for things to do in Midtown with kids will no doubt want to drop into the impressive Lego or Nintendo stores.

Grand Central Terminal

Grand Central Terminal just might be one of the most famous film locations in the world, with countless movies and TV shows using it as a backdrop.

Don’t forget to look up when you’re inside–personally, I never knew Grand Central had a painted turquoise ceiling until I saw it in person, and it’s now my favorite aspect of the building.

If you’re hungry, also ducking down to the famous and incredibly beautiful Grand Central Oyster Bar while you’re there.

New York Public Library (Central Branch)

The Central Branch of the New York Public Library, famously guarded by its impressive lion statues, is a must-see for any bibliophile looking for things to do in Midtown.

Be sure to duck inside to check out the Rose Reading Room while you’re there–visiting it is undoubtedly one of the best free things to do in New York .

Under-the-Radar Things to Do in Midtown NYC

I wouldn’t necessarily go so far as to call these things to do in Midtown hidden gems–but they’re definitely not as well-known than the options above!

Moon New York City is perfect for uncovering interesting spots like these that are somewhat less obvious to first-time visitors to NYC–not surprising when you know that the book was put together by a native New Yorker!

Morgan Library & Museum

Initially founded by Pierpont Morgan (think J.P. Morgan Chase Bank), the Morgan Library & Museum is extremely easy to access when visiting Midtown and is incredibly beautiful.

The museum is only a short walk away from Grand Central Terminal, and in addition to its gorgeous library, it also regularly houses interesting exhibitions.

The price to visit is quite steep, but at certain times during the week it does transform into one of the free museums in NYC , which is the best time to visit.

Chrysler Building

Once considered the ugliest building in the world, the Chrysler Building (located at 42nd & Lexington Ave) is now known as an Art Deco masterpiece and is my personal favorite building in Manhattan.

You can see it from the street when you’re near Grand Central, so keep an eye out!

St. Patrick’s Cathedral

The stunning Neo-Gothic facade of St. Patrick’s Cathedral looks almost out of place on modern, consumer-focused Fifth Avenue–but as it is arguably the most incredible religious building in all of NYC, it’s definitely worth adding to your list of what to see in Midtown.

Much smaller than famous Chinatown but incredibly fun to visit, Koreatown is packed full of delicious restaurants and entertaining karaoke bars.

Murray Hill

Looking for endless options for eating absolutely scrumptious Indian food? Head to Murray Hill!

We haven’t been disappointed by a meal here yet–though like always, we do advise checking reviews before sitting down to your feast.

United Nations Headquarters

Interested in global politics?

The UN’s headquarters are located in Midtown, and if you’d like, you can tour them during your trip to New York.

Carnegie Hall

Arguably the most famous concert hall in the world, attending a performance at Carnegie Hall is a dream come true for many.

If you’re interested in the hall and don’t have the opportunity to take in a performance, though, you can still take a tour of Carnegie Hall to get a behind-the-scenes look at the iconic venue.

Bryant Park

Located right next door to the main branch of the New York Public Library, Bryant Park is the smaller, slightly less-touristy cousin of Central Park to the north.

In addition to a near-constant roster of daily events ranging from yoga classes to chess lessons, Bryant Park is also known for its excellent ice skating rink during the winter!

Macy’s Flagship Store

Are you a fan of the classic movie Miracle on 34th Street?

If so, a visit to the gigantic–and original–Macy’s on 34th Street absolutely belongs on your list of things to do in Midtown.

If you’re visiting New York during the Christmas season, be sure not to miss the enormous Santa display on the eighth floor of the store!

1. Times Square

Times Square is one of the most recognizable places in the entire world. It is every bit as electrifying as it looks in movies and TV.

There is quite a lot to do in this small part of New York besides gazing at the giant billboards.

Many of the most popular NYC attractions are in Times Square like Madame Tussauds Wax Museum .

2. See a Broadway Show 

At any given time, there are dozens of different shows playing on Broadway to choose from.

4) Go to an Observation Deck

Take your pick of New York City's tallest buildings to get incredible views.

There are three located in Midtown Manhattan - the Empire State Building , Top of the Rock  and the relatively new SUMMIT .

The views are somewhat different and each has pros and cons.

5. Utilize a Tourist Attraction Concession Pass

6. Explore Grand Central Terminal

Located in the heart of Midtown, this famed train terminus is free to explore. It is one of NYC's most magnificent sites.

Its cavernous room on the Main Concourse has the famous celestial ceiling. Grand Central is a must-see when in the Big Apple.

7. Rockefeller Center

This massive complex of buildings covers three full city blocks from West 48th St. to West 51st St. between 5th and 6th Avenues.

Like a city within a city, there are many things to do here. 

You might enjoy learning about Rockefeller Center's history and its striking architecture, indoor murals, and artwork like the famous outdoor sculpture of Atlas.

Other popular activities to do at Rockefeller Center are to take tours of  Radio City Music Hall  and NBC Studios.

8. Shop ‘til You Drop 

Fifth Avenue is a shopper’s paradise. You will find some of the most famous department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Cartier and Tiffany's, alongside numerous flagships stores of national chains.

Bloomingdale’s is a few blocks east on Lexington Ave and E 59th St.

During the Christmas shopping season, the top department stores set up magical and wildly creative window displays. If you are in town in December, make it a point to visit the holiday windows !

9. Din e Out

Some of the best restaurants in the city are located in Midtown Manhattan. Our post on Times Square has a long list of restaurants. Below we list restaurants that are kid-friendly .

On the west side of Midtown, an easy choice is  City Kitchen , a huge food market located at 8th Ave. and W. 44th Street that will suit all tastes.

As for shopping, Midtown is a shopper's delight! The stores along 5th Avenue from 42nd Street to 57th range from H&M to Tiffany’s.

There are also wonderful specialty  shops in Rockefeller Center

Visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral

St. Pat’s, as it is commonly referred to by locals, is the largest Catholic cathedral in America.

Its neo-gothic style is stunning and it is free to enter and admire. You can also attend services there.

Relax in Bryant Park   

Bryant Park is an oasis of green in the heart of Midtown and has a wide range of events and activities for people of all ages year-round.

R ide the Roosevelt Island Tram

The Roosevelt Island Tram, which some might refer to as a cable car, provides a skyline view of the city like no other.

Go to Trump Tower

Though Donald Trump no longer lives here, Trump Tower is worth popping into if only for a few minutes to see where history was made.

Its glitz and glamour are tacky to some and attractive to others. Find out for yourself by  visiting Trump Tower . 

In the five-level atrium you can get food and shop and here's a little tip: they have public bathrooms!

In the lobby area, you can see the escalator that Trump rode down when he announced his candidacy.

See a Broadway Show

While we can't guarantee that you can see a Broadway show for free whenever you like, there are a few ways you can save quite a bit of money on tickets.

During this twice-annual Broadway Week tickets for select shows are two-for-one.

In  July  and  August , you can attend  Broadway in Bryant Park , and see free, short performances by the cast of some of the top shows.

Ticket lotteries can get you $10 tickets to shows - though you are playing the odds. Still, give it a go!

Other ways to save big on Broadway tickets are by purchasing tickets at the TKTS booth in Times Square .

Museums with Late Nights

Take advantage of fewer crowds by visiting a Midtown museum when they have late hours.

Note that some of them are free to visit on their late nights.

• MoMA is open until 9 every Friday and on the first Thursday of every month
• Japan Society – free on Fridays 6 pm – 9 pm
• Morgan Library & Museum – free on Fridays from 7 pm-9 pm

Attractions Open Late in NYC

These attractions have quite late hours, some as late as midnight or 1 am.

Since they are in the heart of Times Square, you can have a full night out by grabbing a meal, going to one of these attractions, and then doing some people-watching in Times Square.

See a Comedy Show

Carolines  at 1626 Broadway at 49th Street is a legendary comedy club where performers like Jerry Seinfeld, Billy Crystal, and Rosie O’Donnell got their start. 

Broadway Comedy Club  at 318 West 53rd Street features at least four nationally known headliners for a performance that lasts from 90 minutes to two hours.

LOL Times Square  is a casual comedy club that offers a variety of lineups and even has a family option since as we know, New York-style comedy can be a bit raunchy at times.

Experience the Midnight Moment

Every night from 11:57 pm to midnight, you can witness the world’s largest digital art exhibition in Times Square. 

The billboards are synchronized resulting in three fabulous moments of the same whimsical imagery.

Dine Out on Restaurant Row

Bowlmor Times Square  has 48 bowling lanes, an arcade, billiards, and lounge areas serving beer and alcohol.

It is open Sundays to Thursdays from 2:00 pm - 12:00 am and Fridays/Saturdays from 2:00 pm - 2:00 am. 

Go Shopping

New York truly is the city that never sleeps. For 24-hour shopping, head to the Apple Store on 5th Avenue and 57th Street. Check your email, play on the latest gadgets, and more.

Many stores around Times Square are open late. Popular stores like H&M, Gap, Urban Outfitters, Superdry, Old Navy, and Sephora are open until 10 pm or later. 

For the child in all of us, the Disney Store is open until 1 am!

People-Watch

The cast of characters in Midtown is a sight to behold.

You’ll see everything from street performers to people rushing nowhere, from tourists speaking every language to locals with New Yawk accents. 

Some great spots are Times Square (try the famous TKTS Red Stairs), the steps of the New York Public Library, a bench in Bryant Park, and inside Grand Central.

United Nations

For the ultimate educational experience in NYC, take the kids on a tour of the United Nations!

Bet they didn't know that the United Nations headquarters is not actually IN New York City!  In fact, it is not even part of the United States. 

The 18-acre site and the buildings upon it are under the sole jurisdiction of the United Nations, not the U.S. government.

Kid-Friendly Museums

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is by far the best kid-friendly museum in midtown.

Exhibits are more than paintings on a wall. Much of the museum is installation art and interactive exhibits. 

MoMA also has audio tours for younger children and a separate one for teens. Better still, admission is always free for visitors 16 and under.  

Another big hit with the kids is the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum .

Play in Bryant Park

All year long this park right near Times Square has a full children's program ranging from StoryTime, and a free hour of music, stories, and jokes.

There is also an old-fashioned carousel open all year for $3 per ride. 

The park also has a reading room, two ping-pong tables, board games, and other activities that are fun for any age.

Go Ice-Skating

Midtown is the site of the best ice skating rinks in NYC.

You can go to the famous Rockefeller Center Ice Skating Rink, the rink in Bryant Park, and Wollman Rink in Central Park.

Family-Friendly Restaurants

Kids love milkshakes. If they love hamburgers too, then  Shake Shack  is the place to get food.  

To cover all taste buds in one place, go to either the food court in  Grand Central Terminal  or  City Kitchen , a huge food market with seating two blocks from Times Square.

Midtown Comics

Midtown Comics  is both a comic book store and a toy store. There is plenty to see (and buy) for kids and adults.

Get a Selfie with Cartoon Characters

For the little ones, you can find a bunch of ‘cartoon characters’ around Times Square. Look for Elmo.

This eatery has been around for over 50 years and is known for its signature dessert, Frozen Hot Chocolate .

There is plenty of subway service in Midtown Manhattan. There's practically a subway stop every five blocks!

1. Empire State Building

One of the most infamous things to do in Midtown is visiting the Empire State Building . The gargantuan skyscraper takes up half a block on 5th Avenue between W 33 and 34 Streets. It set world records when it opened in 1931 with 102 stories. The Art Deco-style building was built to be the first building taller than 100 stories.

All guests have access to exhibitions on the 2nd and 80th floors and 2 observation decks on the 86th and 102nd floors. When you arrive, you’ll stand in a line and go through security before you head to one of the elevators.

The exhibit floors are great for all ages with interactive exhibits on the history, architecture, and lore of the skyscraper. Head to the open-air observation deck, that’s on the 86th floor. Or you can take the new all-glass elevator from there to the 102nd-floor observatory with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Keep in mind you’ll want to purchase your tickets in advance .

Even if you can’t find it in your NYC itinerary to go up into the Empire State Building, you still enjoy the building’s beauty! 2. Times Square

Probably one of the most famous sites in the city and what to do in Midtown if you’ve never been is visit Times Square at least once! Times Square is at the crossroads of 42nd Street, Broadway, and 7th Avenue. Since the mid-1800s, it’s been a hub for pedestrians, vendors, and travel. Today, you’ll find some of the most popular things to do in Midtown right here in Times Square, or within a few blocks in any direction!

You could make a day out of exploring this small, condensed area alone as there are tons of things to do in Times Square (yes, even cool hidden things that locals love too), which is the spine of New York City’s Theater District. It’s also where you’ll find restaurants, comedy clubs, rooftop bars, speakeasies, theaters, pop-up shops, flagship stores, whacky street characters (who are definetely infringing on copyrights), and more.

Just walk Broadway and you’ll find mega stores like Hershey’s Chocolate World, Sephora, U.S. Polo, and Swarovski. And Times Square is also a great place to visit some of the classic New York City souvenir stores lining the busy thoroughfare.

If you’re hungry, head over to Ray’s Pizza, Max Brenner’s, or even Krispy Kreme. The best pizza by the slice in NYC here though is Joe’s Pizza. Or head over to Restaurant Row nearby and eat at popular restaurants like Carmine’s or Gallagher’s Steakhouse, one of the best steakhouses in NYC !

And everyone thinks knows of Times Square at New Year’s Eve in NYC as the big event here, but there’s always something happening here! If you’re in NYC during the summer solstice, show up for Over Madness Yoga, the annual yoga class that’s been going on for over 20 years. 3. Rockefeller Center

Make sure to add Rockefeller Center to the top of your list of things to do in Midtown. It’s a complex of 19 commercial buildings covering 3 blocks between 5th and 6th Avenues, from 48th Street to 51st Street.

Located in the middle of the bustling Diamond District, Rockefeller Center is home to television studios, private businesses, restaurants, and retail stores. This is where shows the likes of Saturday Night Live and the Today Show are filmed.

And if you’re in NYC in the winter , Rockefeller Center Plaza where you can visit the iconic ice rink and Rockefeller Christmas Tree during Christmas in NYC .

The shopping at Rockefeller Center is top-notch, with both high-end and mid-range retailers. You’ll find Tiffany & Co and FAO Schwartz here. This is where Saks 5th Avenue is located, and you can pick up NBC merchandise at the NBC Experience Store.

The eateries at Rockefeller Center cater to both business types and visitors, so they also run the spectrum from grab-and-go to white linen. There’s the famous Magnolia Bakery. Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House is known for its award-winning wine collection. And Pebble Bar is a must if you love an intimate setting with superb drinks.

4. Top of the Rock Observatory

30 Rockefeller Plaza is one of the most well-known spots at Rockefeller Center. If you want to see one of the best observation decks in New York City , this is where the Top of the Rock is located. It’s an open-air observation deck with 360 views of the city!

Located on the 70th floor of 30 Rock, it offers some of the best views in NYC of Lower Manhattan and the Empire State Building.

5. Grand Central Terminal

Opening in 1913, Art Deco-style Grand Central Station Terminal is not only a major transit hub but also a popular tourist destination. It’s in Midtown East, and the main entrance is on E 42nd Street, under Park Avenue.

Inside the main concourse is the breathtaking cathedral ceiling painted with a zodiac mural and backlight stars! There’s of course the iconic information booth clock that sits at the center of the concourse. And everyone should stop at the Whispering Gallery near the 42nd Street entrance.

You’ll find a variety of shops and places to eat at Grand Central Terminal as well. Off the main concourse is the famous Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant, as well as the historic Campbell Bar. The Grand Central Market is lovely to just peruse but it’s always a great place to pick up odds and ends for a cold lunch.

And the Dining Concourse on the lower level is a food court with something for every taste. Take your food to the dining hall and enjoy lunch while you watch people rushing to their trains.

Also, one of the best hidden gems in NYC is located here! The Whispering Gallery is a spot where you can whisper a secret message to a friend or even stranger without anyone else hearing! The arched dome structure of the gallery can carry quiet sounds to the opposite end of the passageway.

6. See a Show on Broadway

Head to the Theater District along Broadway to see the most hardworking talent in the industry in venues of every size! While there is a Broadway Theater, to “see a show on Broadway” entails seeing a major production in a venue of 500 seats or more.

Broadway productions are some of the most prestigious in the world. They include world-famous titles like The Lion King, The Book of Mormon, and Hamilton. You can see a Broadway show in over 41 venues across NYC any day of the week.

There are many great venues located within walking distance of Times Square, including the Barrymore Theater on W 47th Street and the Gershwin Theater on W 51st Street.

Since its opening in 1929, the Museum of Modern Art has been one of the most well-known and influential modern art museums in the world and one of the best museums in NYC . You can see examples of both modern and contemporary art spanning paintings and sculptures to electronic media, print, and even live performances. The museum’s original collection includes pieces by Picasso, Monet, Warhol, and Van Gogh.  

During your visit, you can also walk through a sculpture garden or enjoy 3 different places to eat. The MoMA has 2 different cafes serving local wine and Italian plates, as well as The Modern, an elevated New American restaurant and bar.

8. Bryant Park

When you’re looking for things to do in Midtown, Bryant Park is a must! It’s a smaller grassy park next to the New York Public Library Main Branch on the corner of 42nd Street and 6th Avenue in Midtown south.

From watching locals play chess under the trees to watching a summer movie on the lawn, there’s always something going on in Bryant Park. Plus, this park has some of the best (and fanciest) public bathrooms in the city , I’m not even kidding.

On any given day, it’s just nice to stroll under the trees, sit on the lawn, or grab a quick bite at the kiosks in the park. There are also plenty of little tables with chairs under the shade of the trees, which is a perfect place to take a walking break after exploring all the fun Midtown attractions you’ll be hitting up.

There’s a pretty fountain, a brass sculpture near 6th Avenue, and Le Carrousel near W 40th Street. And along the library side is the beautiful, ivy-covered Bryant Park Grill.

During the warmer months, the New York Public hosts the Reading Room at the park. You can borrow books, attend author talks, or come watch Books on Broadway performances. There are also tons of community programs, including bird-watching tours, knitting classes, boot camps, and much more. And a favorite is the summer movie nights happening on Monday nights from June through August.

One of the most popular things to do in Bryant Park is visiting the annual Winter Village! October through March there’s an ice rink with skate rentals. Without a doubt, this is one of the best places to go ice skating in NYC and it’s free if you bring your own skates!

Or for a unique experience with friends, try your hand at curling at the Curling Café & Bar! And the Winter Village shops are a great place to pick up ornaments, handcrafted items, and delicious food.

9. New York Public Library Main Branch

Next to Bryant Park is the main branch of the New York Public Library, officially housed in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. The majestic entrance of the Beaux Arts building is on 5th Avenue, where you can’t miss the iconic lion statues named Patience and Fortitude who have been in multiple tv shows and movies filmed in NYC like Ghostbusters!

Admiring the architecture and art alone is a good reason to come to the NYPL Main Branch. There are frescoes, archways, Greek pillars, bronze sculptures, chandeliers, and more. Walking room to room feels like you’re in a museum. There are so many good rooms to check out, including the McGraw Rotunda and the Rose Reading Room.

The Rose Reading Room is stunning and you can visit by joining one of the free tours with NYPL staff. Also, don’t miss the Treasures Collection on the first level. This is where you can see fascinating literary artifacts of all kinds, including the original Winnie-the-Pooh and Friends stuffed animals!

10. Shopping on 5th Avenue

Starting from Bryant Park and E 40th Street, you’ll find some of the best shopping in the world along 5th Avenue. Go all the way up to Central Park and along the way you’ll see shops at every price point.

Check out MUJI across from Bryant Park or go north to Zara and The North Face between E 42nd and 43rd Streets. You’ll even see several I Love NYC Gifts that have all the items your New York City souvenirs on your checklist. Some stores, like Club Monaco near E 48th Street, are in gorgeous old buildings that you have to go inside.

At the corner of E 50th Street are Saks Fifth Avenue and Dolce and Gabbana. After this, you get a lot more high-end brands like Tiffany’s, Cartier, and Coach. And then right before Central Park at E 57th Street, you’ll see clusters of luxury brands with beautiful storefronts by BVLGARI, Louis Vuitton, and more. These are especially magical around the holidays when you can check out their elaborate holiday window displays !

11. Summit One Vanderbilt

If you’re looking for what to do in Midtown that involves the BEST views in the city you’re going to want to go here! Summit One Vanderbilt is NYC’s newest commercial skyscraper and observation deck, and it’s the tallest one in Midtown. It’s also part-observation deck/part-art exhibition, using the NYC skyline in the art! And for anyone planning a trip to NYC, you’ll want to plan a visit to Summit One Vanderbilt as it’s aboslutely stunning and the views are unbeatable.

Starting at One Vanderbilt’s 91st floor, you’ll walk through 3 stories of immersive art installations and observation decks with unobstructed views of the city. Without a doubt, you have the best views of the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building from here!

Each space features concepts and art installations by contemporary artists. They involve digital art, reflective mirrors, floor-to-ceiling windows, sculptures, and more. You can also ride the world’s tallest external glass elevators, pier down from glass ledges 1100 feet over Madison Avenue and walk an outdoor observation deck. Your tour is 90 minutes long with allotted times in each space.

You can visit Summit One Vanderbilt every day but Tuesday from 9 AM to midnight (last entry at 11 PM). And if you can go at night, do it! It’s without a doubt, one of the best things to do in NYC at night . The lights shift to complement the sunset and the lights of the city. The official entrance to the Summit is through the Grand Central Station Concourse but you can also enter along Vanderbilt Avenue.

12. Eat Your Way through Koreatown

You’ll find Koreatown covering W 31st Street to W 33rd, between Greeley Square Park on Broadway and 5th Avenue. This tiny neighborhood is packed with Korean cuisine at it’s many restaurants, shops, and more.

Having lived in Seoul for 2.5 years, one of our favorite things to do in Midtown Manhattan is enjoying all the quality places to eat here.

You’ll find everything here, like Korean BBQ, karaoke bars, Korean fusion, and authentic hard-to-find dishes like dak galbi at Hong Chun Cheon Dak Galbi. If you’re craving Korean fried chicken, Turntable Chicken Jazz W 33rd is exactly what it sounds like. Enjoy the cool atmosphere and live jazz played on vinyl while you eat amazing Korean-style wings.

Jongro BBQ is our favorite BBQ in Midtown! It’s not the only Korean BBQ place in Koreatown, by far. But the cuts of meat you get melt in your mouth, and the service is amazing. Most of the Korean BBQ places, including Jongro, line both sides of W 32nd, along with a handful of fun karaoke bars. Miss Korea also has great BBQ.

Itaewon Gastropub is great if you like K-Pop and soju. This place is loud and lively with live DJs and neon lights everywhere. Come here for creative Korean fusion dishes and fun drinks. KOKU RAMEN serves both Korean- and Japanese-style ramen and the décor is a lot of fun with comic book themes.

Just passing through Koreatown? You can still enjoy the amazing food! Woorijip is a hidden gem with classic dishes prepared as grab-and-go meals and a hot Korean buffet.

13. The Morgan Library and Museum

Located on Madison Avenue between E 36th and E 37th Streets is the Morgan Library and Museum , a true treasure in the heart of New York City. This institution started out as the personal library of prominent New Yorker, Pierpont Morgan. Today, it’s a private library and museum where you can see some of the most precious materials in the world.

Morgan built the library in 1902 to store his ever-growing collection of rare materials. There are personal notes from George Washington, handwritten drafts by Jane Austen, a first edition of Leaves of Grass by New Yorker Walt Whitman , and more!

The building was fashioned as an Italian Renaissance-style palazzo and is itself a work of art. The campus includes the original library, an annex, Morgan’s private residence, and a modern event space.

The Morgan Library and Museum is known across the globe as a research library and restoration center. You can walk through the different rooms, see art exhibits, and attend programs for adults and children. There are regular performances by world-famous musicians. And visitors come just to dine in the Morgan Dining Room, a fine-dining American restaurant.

14. Flatiron District

Another important commercial hub in Midtown NYC is the Flatiron District. It’s a small neighborhood that centers around the immediately recognizable Flatiron Building at the intersection of Broadway and 5th Avenue. This iconic landmark is a must-see (when it’s not under scaffolding) and some of our favorite restaurants are all around.

While you can’t go in the 121-year-old building, it’s a beautiful site to see in person. Madison Square Park is always great for a stroll around the fountain or a visit to the dog park. Grab some food at Shake Shack in the park and sit at the tables under the trees.

Or for something more substantial, Eataly Flatiron has a ton of options just across Broadway, we also really like La Pecora Bianca for their pasta dishes in the Flatiron District too. Oscar Wilde is a unique Victorian-style bistro bar on W 27th Street that goes all out during the holidays throughout the year and is one of the best Christmas bars in NYC during that special time of year too!

And we love Old Town Bar on E 18th Street for a drink. It’s been an NYC mainstay since 1892 and has a lovely old-timey feel, probably because it’s also one of the oldest bars in NYC !

15. Macy’s Herald Square

An institution and a must-see in Midtown, Manhattan is Macy’s Herald Square, their flagship store that has been on W 34th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues and Herald Square for over 120 years!

It quickly earned the title of the World’s Largest Department Store and takes up the entire block. The building is also a National Historic Landmark. Inside Macy’s, there are 9 floors of retail space! There are elevators, but taking the original wooden escalators is a neat experience.

The famous department store has many things it’s known for. At the top of the list is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade that ends in front of the store. It’s the world’s largest parade and has been an annual event since 1924. Other annual attractions are the holiday windows and the Macy’s Flower Show in the spring.

Not to mention, this is what to do in Midtown if you’re looking to do some shopping!

16. Union Square

The neighborhood of Union Square is a commercial area surrounding Union Square Park. Union Square Park is quite beautiful and visiting is one of the best things to do in Midtown. There’s a year-round  Green Market  open several days a week, food kiosks scattered about, and points of interest like bronze statues and a garden.

There’s a subway station inside the park and there are always interesting characters that gather there. You can also see street performers and art vendors selling their work. And during the holidays, don’t miss out on the massive Union Square Park Holiday Market! It’s definitely one of the best holiday markets in New York City during the holiday season.

And when FREEHOLD in the Park is open, this is an excellent place to take a walking break and grab a drink.

Or, if you’re looking for a cool spot to enjoy a cocktail, light bites, and great music, head to Another Country down 16th Street just a block off the park. This cozy cocktail lounge has a great ambiance and plays music at the right volume to carry a conversation from the owner’s personal vinyl collection. We love it here.

Moving out from the park a block or 2 in any direction, there are all kinds of retail options. Grab a bite at ABC Kitchen or check out a local New York institution at Fishs Eddy where you can find American-made kitchenware, some of which date back to the early 1900s.

Along 5th Avenue, you can find brick-and-mortar locations for big retailers like Zara, J. Crew, Madewell, and more.

And the dining options are also superb. Boucherie is nearby, and Pokeworks is perfect for taking to the park. Old Town Bar is one of the oldest taverns in the city with great burgers and a historic dumbwaiter that brings food down from the kitchen!

17. Chelsea Market

If you’re a fooding looking for what to do in Midtown, you’ll want to head to Chelsea Market! Chelsea Market is a must-see in Midtown, whether you come for the food, the shopping, or the NYC history! This busy modern marketplace takes up a whole block between 9th and 10th Avenues and W 15th and W 16th Streets. It’s the old Nabisco factory that sits in an old industrial area on the boundary line between Chelsea and the Meatpacking District. (Fun fact, this is where the Oreo cookie was invented!)

The building dates by to the 1890s, and it almost feels like a museum in some places with displays of many of the building’s original features and factory parts, including Oreos! You walk down a main corridor lined with boutique shops, trendy eateries, art installations, historic plaques, and more.

Enter near the W 10th Street side and you’ll see sandwich shops, Fat Witch Bakery, Li-Lac Chocolates, Mokbar, and more. Further down are great markets to peruse like Pearl River Market and its neighbor, Buon’Italia. And at the W 9th entrance is the Artist and Fleas Chelsea which is a destination all on its own!

Come hungry. There are so many different options to eat here whether you’re looking to snack or sit down for a full meal. Los Tacos No. 1 are probably some of the best tacos in the city and our absolute must have when visiting here.

18. The High Line

If you’re strapped for time and looking for what to do in Midtown, we suggest making a beeline for The High Line. An NYC wonder, it’s an elevated park made from an old railway line running 1.45 miles through lower Manhattan. It’s a great way to enjoy NYC’s beautiful outdoor spaces. You can see the city from above and only takes about 30 minutes to walk.

There are different places to stop and enjoy the views along the way. Sit on the step stairs of the Observation Deck that turns the intersection of 10th Avenue and 17th Avenue into a work of art. Or walk through buildings like the Chelsea Market and the 14th Street Passage which always has fun things going on in the breezeway.

There High Line hosts art installations all along the length of the park. And there are different gardens featuring native grasses, flowers, trees, and insects. During the warmer months, the Sundeck is a popular destination for all ages with loungers for sunning and water features that are fun for all ages.

19. The Galleries of Chelsea

If you’re an art lover and looking for what to do in Midtown, look no further than the neighborhood of Chelsea. Art lovers will want to spend a day exploring and moseying around the many galleries that cover 10 blocks in Chelsea, mostly all between 10th and 11th Avenues.

Chelsea is known for its influential art scene and has the most galleries, including big names like David Zwirner and Larry Gagosian.

In fact, David Zwirner is a must with breathtaking immersive installations that will impress even the least interested viewer.

And Microscope Gallery is always exciting because they feature collections that other galleries shy away from!

You can see works by Jeff Koons, Banksy, and other big names in pop art when you visit Taglialatella Galleries. And Guy Hepner has curated an impressive collection of post-war and contemporary art. It’s a great place to see current and older artists, as well as pick up prints.

20. Visit a Rooftop Bar

One of our favorite things to do in Midtown on a clear day is checking out all the amazing rooftop bars! Enjoy the patchwork skyline with a mix of glass, brick, and concrete buildings from every era.

Enjoy the enchanting views from some of the best rooftop bars in New York City located in Midtown. There’s something for every vibe, whether you want to lounge and sip on a cocktail or enjoy some good music.

These are just a few of the best rooftop bars in Midtown for great views of the skyline!

Magic Hour is a whimsical cocktail bar at the Moxy Hotel on W 7th. It’s got a fun carnival theme, lawn games, and great spots to take a photo.

For a friendly NYC feel, head to 230 Fifth near Union Square. Enjoy cocktails and all kinds of small plates NYC water towers, string lights, and rooftop plants.

Spyglass Rooftop on W 38th is a chic rooftop bar with some of the best views of the Empire State Building.

And Cloud Social is the perfect place to spend the evening with cozy booths while you stare up at the skyscrapers all around you.

21. Radio City Music Hall

Sharing a block with Rockefeller Center, you’ll find the famous Radio City Music Hall on 6th Avenue between W 50th and W 51st Streets. The theater actually opened in 1932, hosting live events, movie premieres, and even religious services. But Radio City reached its iconic status in the late 20th century when it launched its Christmas Spectacular, featuring the Rockettes.

Today, people come from all over the world to see the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall, which runs from mid-November through early January. You can also do a behind-the-scenes tour. The rest of the year, you can see a variety of live concerts, comedy shows, and live television recordings.

22. Ellen’s Stardust Diner

Ellen’s Stardust Diner  on the corner of Broadway and W 51st Street couldn’t be anywhere else other than in the middle of NYC’s Theater District! It’s a 50s-themed diner with multiple levels known for its fabulous singing waitstaff. Check out the extensive menu full of American classics, you’ll enjoy a show with musical performances you won’t forget.

There are 50s memorabilia all over the walls, screens playing all kinds of performances from the 50s, and you’ll often see one of the waitstaff will climb onto a table with a mic! The diner’s waitstaff includes talented stage actors who have gone on to have amazing careers on Broadway and in music and film. There was even a former waiter who performed on American Idol!

This is without a doubt one of the best experiences for a first timer and one of the best old-school diners in NYC to check out!

23. Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises

One of the best things to do in Midtown is taking in the skyline from the water on a sightseeing cruise.  Circle Line  has several different cruise options, many of which leave from Pier 83 in Midtown.

One of the most popular is the July 4th Fireworks Cruise. This nighttime cruise includes dinner and drinks, as well as live DJs for your fireworks-viewing enjoyment. Or you can see the Statue of Liberty on the hour-long Liberty Midtown Cruise.

The Harbor Lights cruise is a personal favorite. You’ll love seeing the city skyline at night while you look out over the water and sip on cocktails. And Circle Line’s signature tour, The Best of NYC, leaves from Midtown to take you past all the most iconic landmarks around the island of Manhattan.

24. Hudson Yards

Hudson Yards is a younger New York City neighborhood in Midtown, featuring Hudson River views, glossy skyscrapers, and snazzy attractions. This is where you’ll find sleek structures like The Edge Observation Deck , which is home to the highest outdoor observation deck in North America.

And The Vessel next to Bella Abzug Park is one of NYC’s newest landmarks. It’s been described as interactive artwork, featuring a honeycomb structure made up of landings and interconnecting staircases. You can visit this outdoor space in Manhattan for free any day of the week and look up from the base of the honeycomb structure. (Visitors are no longer allowed to enter the staircase).

For great shopping, head to the massive Hudson Yards Mall across from the Vessel. Also, the Mercado Little Spain is one of our favorite food courts in NYC. It features restaurants, kiosks, and bars. a wide range of both trendy and authentic Spanish meals. Try decadent churros and plates of Spanish jamón or pick up empanadas and paella.

This is definetely what to do in Midtown if you need a great break as there are plenty of sitting areas, places to eat, restrooms inside the mall, and you can even access the High Line from here too, another one of the top Midtown attractions!

25. St Patrick’s Cathedral

Across from Rockefeller Center on 5th Avenue is the breathtaking St. Patrick’s Cathedral, one of the most popular destinations in NYC. The 140-year-old Neo-Gothic structure is a Roman Catholic church and the largest cathedral in North America.

You can visit, attend mass, and take tours of the stunning interiors. St. Patrick’s is also a highlight of the infamous NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade . This is where the parade grandstands are located, and the church hosts a special St. Patrick’s Day service.

Midtown is known as the heart of Manhattan featuring iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, world-class museums, shopping, and bustling entertainment options in the Theater District. Millions of people each year visit and stay in Midtown as it’s a great base for exploring New York City’s most famous attraction

Midtown Manhattan is very walkable, although it’s the largest neighborhood in Manhattan, the best way to get around from Midtown attractions is to do so by foot so you don’t miss famous landmarks like vantage points of the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Theater District, Rockefeller Plaza, New York Public Library, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and more! Just wear good walking shoes, which is a good rule of thumb for any visit to New York City as you’ll do more walking than you realize.

Midtown Manhattan is the best area to stay in New York City for visitors wanting to see the city’s best highlights. Not only are you walking distance to many popular attractions from the Theater District to the Empire State Building, but you’re also close to great transportation hubs to help you access any other part of the city as well. There are plenty of hotel options, restaurants, and shopping in Midtown too.

Museum of Modern Art

2. New York Public Library

Sure, you can’t check out a book. You’re in New York, why go to the library? 

You don’t want to miss another great photo op with Patience and Fortitude, the iconic twin lions who stand guard over the library. You can also pose in the library’s Rose Main Reading Room.

3. High Line

4. Morgan Library & Museum

The conviction of former President Donald J. Trump on Thursday is just the latest step in his legal odyssey in New York’s court system. The judge, Juan M. Merchan, set Mr. Trump’s sentencing for July 11, at which point he could be sentenced to as much as four years behind bars, or to probation.

It won’t stop him from running for president, though: There is no legal prohibition on felons doing that . No constitutional provision would stop him even from serving as president from a prison cell, though in practice that would trigger a crisis that courts would almost certainly have to resolve.

His ability to vote — for himself, presumably — depends on whether he is sentenced to prison. Florida, where he is registered, requires felons convicted there to complete their full sentence, including parole or probation, before regaining voting rights. But when Floridians are convicted in another state, Florida defers to the laws of that state, and New York disenfranchises felons only while they are in prison.

Former President Donald J. Trump faced 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, related to the reimbursement of hush money paid to the porn star Stormy Daniels in order to cover up a sex scandal around the 2016 presidential election.

“Because Florida recognizes voting rights restoration in the state of conviction, and because New York’s law states that those with a felony conviction do not lose their right to vote unless they are incarcerated during the election, then Trump will not lose his right to vote in this case unless he is in prison on Election Day,” said Blair Bowie, a lawyer at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit watchdog group.

Mr. Trump will almost certainly appeal his conviction, after months of criticizing the case and attacking the Manhattan district attorney, who brought it, and Justice Merchan, who presided over his trial.

Long before that appeal is heard, however, Mr. Trump will be enmeshed in the gears of the criminal justice system.

A pre-sentencing report makes recommendations based on the defendant’s criminal record — Mr. Trump had none before this case — as well as his personal history and the crime itself. The former president was found guilty of falsifying business records in relation to a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who says she had a brief sexual tryst with Mr. Trump in 2006, in order to buy her silence.

At the pre-sentence interview, a psychologist or social worker working for the probation department may also talk to Mr. Trump, during which time the defendant can “try to make a good impression and explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” according to the New York State Unified Court System.

The pre-sentencing report can also include submissions from the defense, and may describe whether “the defendant is in a counseling program or has a steady job.”

In Mr. Trump’s case, of course, he is applying — as it were — for a steady job as president of the United States, a campaign that may be complicated by his new status as a felon. Mr. Trump will likely be required to regularly report to a probation officer, and rules on travel could be imposed.

Mr. Trump was convicted of 34 Class E felonies, New York’s lowest level , each of which carry a potential penalty of up to four years in prison. Probation or home confinement are other possibilities that Justice Merchan can consider.

That said, Justice Merchan has indicated in the past that he takes white-collar crime seriously . If he did impose prison time, he would likely impose the punishment concurrently, meaning that Mr. Trump would serve time on each of the counts he was convicted of simultaneously.

If Mr. Trump were instead sentenced to probation, he could still be jailed if he were later found to have committed additional crimes. Mr. Trump, 77, currently faces three other criminal cases: two federal, dealing with his handling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election , and a state case in Georgia that concerns election interference.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers can file a notice of appeal after sentencing, scheduled for July 11 at 10 a.m. And the judge could stay any punishment during an appeal, something that could delay punishment beyond Election Day.

The proceedings will continue even if he wins: Because it’s a state case, not federal, Mr. Trump would have no power as president to pardon himself .

Looking to see the planetary parade June 3? NASA says you may be disappointed. Here's why.

If you're wanting to see a parade of planets, experts say later this month may be better for viewing an actual celestial show..

Folks who are expecting to see a dazzling parade of planets on Monday June 3 may be disappointed by what they end up seeing in the sky and, instead, experts are saying they should manage their expectations and wait until the end of the month to see the planetary alignment .

The past couple of months have been pretty eventful for backyard astronomers. First, the solar eclipse in April, then the northern lights made a rare appearance in May, and now a parade of planets will make its 2024 debut.

Stargazers are supposed to be able to see six planets, Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus, Mars, Neptune and Saturn, aligned.

However, experts from NASA and Astronomers Without Borders both agree that it won't be the best time to see the planetary parade. That's because Uranus, Mercury and Jupiter will be swallowed up by the sun's light and be too close to the horizon to be visible.

Experts say be patient: Planet parade will be more of a show later in June

"To me, the closest thing to a planet parade is June 29th, when you’ll have Saturn, the third-quarter Moon, Mars, and Jupiter arrayed across the sky at dawn," Preston Dyches, a public engagement specialist for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory told USA TODAY. Dyches has a background in astronomy and hosts NASA's " What's Up ," a monthly video series that describes what's happening in the night sky.

Andrew Fazekas, the communications manager for Astronomers Without Borders, says that when it comes to the planetary parade on June 3, it will be nearly impossible to see all the planets with the naked eye.

Both Fazekas and Dyches agree that it's better to see the planetary parade on June 29, instead.

On June 3, Jupiter, Mercury and Uranus are going to be "way too close to the sun," said Fazekas. So, it will be difficult to see those three planets.

So, folks who do decide to rise before the sun does on Monday morning just to get a glimpse at this celestial phenomenon could be setting themselves up for disappointment.

In this case, good things come to those who wait. And waiting until the end of the month will give stargazers a better chance at viewing the planets.

"If you're patient and you wait until the end of the month, these planets will move farther away from the sun higher up in the early morning sky," Fazekas told USA TODAY "So, that you will get an easier chance to pick them out in the sky.

Folks will not only get a better view of the planetary parade if they wait until June 29, but they'll be able to gaze at the stars on Friday night into Saturday morning, instead of having to view it during the work week like they would this Monday morning.

People are expecting to see something amazing the morning of June 3, said Fazekas. But, he's worried the expectations set by two very viral celestial events, the solar eclipse and northern lights, and sensationalization on social media could raise people's expectations a bit too high and lead to a lackluster experience.

He adds that he's concerned one bad experience that was overhyped online could steal people's enthusiasm about astronomy.

"What worries me is that we set people up for disappointment," said Fazekas "And then they won't want to do it again."

According to Fazekas, he's never seen so many people interested in sky-watching, and he doesn't want the excitement to end.

According to a program called SkySafari Pro, you will be able to see the following during the planetary parade on June 29:

• Jupiter, which will be closest to the horizon.

What is a planetary parade?

Basically, it's when the planets form a straight line and look like they're marching across the night sky and form a sort of space parade.

It's also known as a large planetary alignment, states Delaware Online , a part of the USA TODAY Network.

What equipment do you need to view a planetary parade?

According to Fazekas, you will still need binoculars and telescopes to see some of the planets.

"Neptune is a planet that you need strong binoculars or a small telescope to be able to see," said Fazekas. "And it's not easy to find either."

Folks who go out to stargaze on June 28, will be able to see Neptune right next to the moon. On June 29, it will be farther away from the moon, and be above it instead.

Apps, like Skyview on the Apple app store, can turn people's phones into a tool that helps them identify celestial bodies in the night sky.

Where will you be able to see the planetary parade?

According to Fazekas, people will need to do the following to get a view of the planetary parade:

• Get up early, before sunrise.
• Find a spot with a clear view that faces the east or southeastern sky.
• Have your binoculars or telescope ready to view planets that aren't visible to the naked eye.
