This New Great Lakes Cruise Will Sail From Niagara Falls to Some of the Most Exciting Islands in North America

It’s time to consider this close-to-home region for your next cruise.

ponant cruise great lakes

If you're thinking about cruising for your next vacation, you're probably considering the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, or maybe even a European river cruise. But have you ever thought about sticking a little closer to home and sailing the Great Lakes?

A new itinerary by Smithsonian Journeys and luxury cruise line Ponant will bring guests on a tour of the Great Lakes — which are far more like inland seas than actual lakes.

The adventure begins in Toronto on Lake Ontario and starts out with the Great Lakes' most famous attraction: Niagara Falls . Then, it sails across Lake Erie toward Detroit, and continues on to Lake Huron, where guests can explore the Thirty Thousand Islands, the world's largest freshwater archipelago. A further port of call is Manitoulin Island, the world's largest freshwater island, where programming includes in-depth cultural experiences with the Ojibwe people.

Then, it's off to Sault Ste. Marie, where you can sail the Soo Locks to quickly venture up to Lake Superior before returning to the Ponant ship on Lake Huron. Up next on Lake Huron is Mackinac Island, a carless island home to the historic Fort Mackinac, the elegant Victorian-era Grand Hotel, and more than 70 miles of biking, hiking, and horseback riding trails. And finally, guests disembark in Milwaukee.

The sailing will take place aboard Ponant's sister ships Le Dumont d'Urville and Le Bellot, 92-cabin, all-balcony expedition ships that launched in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The elegant, yacht-like vessels, which have a maximum passenger capacity of just 184 people, have a French fine dining restaurant, a casual grill, a spa and fitness center, a theater, and several lounges — including the innovative Blue Eye, an underwater lounge that broadcasts the sounds of the sea (or in this case, sounds of the lake). Smithsonian Journeys and Ponant are offering three Great Lakes sailings between August and October — each will host two Smithsonian Journeys experts on the region to enrich the trips. Rates start at $6,790 per person for an eight-night cruise, and you can book your cruise here .

From  Sault Ste. Marie , you will have the opportunity to transit the engineering marvel of the Soo Locks for a foray into  Lake Superior , before continuing to  Mackinac Island  for an exploration of the island’s Victorian past by horse and buggy.

These locks, which date back over 160 years, are considered the most important in the world due to their shipping traffic. Make sure you visit the Museum Ship Valley Camp where you can visit the interior of a former freighter that sailed on the Great Lakes for more than 50 years.

September 3, 2024 - Mackinac Island

Arrival 9/3/2024 early morning Departure 9/3/2024 midday

Close to the banks of Lake Huron in the State of Michigan, Mackinac Island promises a real journey through time. Originally inhabited by Amerindians, then occupied by French and British colonists, this small island measuring only a few km² still retains an atmosphere of yesteryear today, with its Victorian-style buildings and elegant horse-drawn carriages. Fort Mackinac, on the heights of the island, is a reminder of the conflicts that punctuated the history of this strategic place, a former fur trade centre. In addition to this scenery from the past, the island offers magnificent fine sandy beaches and is home to one of the oldest National Parks in the United States.

Sailing Lake Michigan

September 3, 2024 - Sailing Lake Michigan

Arrival 9/3/2024 Departure 9/3/2024

The first colonists settled in the south at the end of the 17th century, on the site of the current megalopolis of Chicago . Wild landscapes of forests with sparkling colours , cliffs, golden sandy beaches and dunes as far as the eye can see stretch along its 2,600 km of shoreline. In the north, magnificent wind-swept islands rise out of the lake’s emerald waters. At 8 km long, the Mackinac Bridge , which spans the straits between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, is one of the world’s longest suspension bridges.

Arrival 9/4/2024 early morning Disembarkation 9/4/2024 at 8:00 AM

Nested on the shores of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee , the largest city in the State of Wisconsin, harmoniously combines tradition and modernity. Industrial long ago, the city, known as Brew City because of its old breweries renowned all over the world, is experiencing a certain renaissance. While warehouses have given way to restaurants, bars, theatres and art galleries in the city centre, the district still retains traces of its manufacturing past. Further south lies Chicago , the economic centre of the Midwest, with an interesting mix of natural and urban landscapes: its immense skyscrapers, diverse architecture, many parks and magnificent beaches make the city a popular destination.

A local representative will be present at the hospitality desk in the afternoon to welcome you and to offer suggestions for dining and independent exploration. In the evening, join fellow travelers for a welcome cocktail reception in the hotel.  Dinner is on your own.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

There is a particular pleasure to strolling in Quebec . The old fortified town is full of historic buildings such as the Château Frontenac and the imposing Citadelle. Sailing down this canal takes an even more impressive turn at Port Colborne where there is one of the longest locks in the world at 420 metres.

Among the 30,000 islands making up Georgian Bay, Flowerpot Island is certainly one of the most extraordinary. It is part of the Fathom Five National Marine Park. The island gets its name and its reputation from two rock formations in the shape of a flower pot that stand over the crystal clear waters. However, people come here more for hiking trails leading to the lighthouse, allowing them to discover rare flora , and for swimming. The water is cold, the bed rocky and steep.

Isolated creeks with sheer drops, lush vegetation clothed with golden tones in autumn... the scenery is exceptional!

Myths & legends

Although dream-catchers have a more decorative function today, they have a real significance for the Ojibwes from the Lake Huron region. Legend has it that the first dream-catcher was woven by a spider, the reincarnation of a young boy's grandmother whose tribe suffered from famine following a curse struck by an evil spirit. Hung at the entrance of his house, it filtered out the nightmares, allowing only good omens to pass through it. From then on, abundance returned to the village, saving the inhabitants from famine.

In the spotlight

Since the 1980s, the USA and Canada have partnered in a common effort to decontaminate the banks of the Great Lakes , especially in the most populated areas, such as Toronto. Purification plans and pollution prevention have transformed these zones from “areas unfavourable to economic growth into residential areas, which are precious economic assets”, as noted the International Association for Great Lakes Research. In a report published in August 2019, the economic benefit was calculated as more than 4 billion dollars.

Boarding conditions and passenger travel abilities

We invite you to read our boarding conditions and passenger travel abilities by clicking here .

Any new reservation implies the acceptance of these conditions.

The evolving COVID-19 health formalities are available in real time by  clicking here .

Please note

Given the particularly changing international sanitary context, this itinerary as well as the land programmes and shore excursions may have to evolve according to port authorisations and governmental regulations in force at the time of your trip.

Therefore, for even greater peace of mind, we strongly recommend that you book your land programmes before and after your cruise with PONANT.

Health formalities related to COVID-19 will be confirmed to you before your departure.

In this exceptional context, your safety remains our first priority. The effectiveness of our procedures, our cutting-edge medical equipment and the smaller scale of our ships means we can offer maximum safety so that you can relax and enjoy your cruise. The revised passenger circuit and our enhanced hygiene measures can be found on this page: https://au.ponant.com/sail-with-confidence .

To guarantee your entry into one or several countries, you must ensure that you comply with the formalities and health requirements specific to each destination. In just a few clicks on our online search engine, find all the formalities you must complete prior to your departure (visas, entry authorisations for each country, vaccinations, etc.).

The international situation can change rapidly, so be sure to check this information regularly prior to your departure. However, please note that we always recommend our guests contact the relevant national immigration and customs and border control authorities directly to find out what rules apply to their specific situation. PONANT is not responsible for any decisions made by guests based on the information provided by the online search engine.

The information below is current but subject to change at any time without advance notice from government authorities. Please consult your respective government agencies for visa and health information.

Passport valid for at least six (6) months beyond the completion of your trip. Passport must contain at least two completely clear, blank, unused visa pages for each visa required, not including any amendment pages. Visa pages with stains or ink from other pages in the passport are not usable. Guests who deviate from the scheduled embarkation or disembarkation port should research the foreign entry requirements for the port country. Due to government regulations, regrettably, Ponant will have to deny boarding to any guest who fails to obtain the appropriate travel documentation for this trip.

Canada : travel by sea - The eTA is not required for US, Australian and British citizens. Other nationalities: a Visa may be required, please contact Canada consulate website for details. http://www.canada.ca/en/index.html

USA : Depending on your nationality, an ESTA or Visa may be required. Please contact USA consulate website for details. A copy of your visa or ESTA must be sent to PONANT at the very latest 45 days prior to your cruise date. In case the ESTA is sufficient to enter the USA, we also ask you to keep a copy of your ESTA with your passport throughout the duration of your trip.

Please note,  if you have travelled or lived in countries such as: Cuba (on or after 12 January 2021), Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, Syria or North Korea, then this constitutes a valid reason for the US Department of Homeland Security to deny your ESTA . In this event, you must apply to an ambassy for a category B1/B2 visa to travel to the United States. The visa processing time is several months.

If you already have an ESTA (valid for 2 years), we ask you to check its status up until the day of departure by clicking on “CHECK ESTA STATUS” on the website https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov . We also ask that you print it out and keep it with your passport throughout your trip.

A “FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS” page is available on the same website https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/faq to help you with your procedures.

List of items prohibited on board

To guarantee the safety and well-being of our guests, certain items are strictly prohibited on board. Should you have one of these products or objects in your possession, they will be confiscated immediately and will not be transported on the ship. When an item transported aboard is considered illegal, the relevant authorities will be notified systematically.

Click here  for the full list of items prohibited on board.

Warning about the use of drones : the use of drones aboard PONANT ships, whether they are sailing at sea, at a port of call or anchored, is strictly forbidden. The use of drones on land in the Arctic and Antarctic regions is also strictly forbidden by international polar regulations. In other regions, it may be possible to use drones on land if permission has been obtained from the relevant authorities of each country and each region travelled through, as well as a pilot’s licence that should be obtained from your home country. Passengers are responsible for obtaining these permits; they should be able to present them at all times. Passengers who do not obtain these authorisations expose themselves to the risk of legal proceedings.

Expedition programmes include activities such as landings in tender or local boats (sometimes with "wet landing"), moderate walks to more active hikes, all accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides.

Ports of call, visited sites, and landings will depend on weather conditions, position of ice, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.

Travelling to polar/isolated regions is an exhilarating experience in remote areas: please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is extremely expensive. Without adequate medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid with your personal funds. We urge you to subscribe to full coverage insurance, choose your insurance company very carefully, be extremely vigilant and ensure your insurance is fully comprehensive, especially if you are insured by your credit card. PONANT offers an insurance contract with extensive guarantees, please contact us for more information.

Ports of Call & Excursions

Milwaukee

24 September 2024 - Milwaukee

Embarkation 24/9/2024 From 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm Departure 24/9/2024 at 5:00 pm

Sailing Lake Michigan

25 September 2024 - Sailing Lake Michigan

Arrival 25/9/2024 Departure 25/9/2024

You will sail the United States’ largest freshwater body, which gave its name to Michigan , one of the four states that border this lake measuring 500 km long and 200 km wide.

Mackinac Island

25 September 2024 - Mackinac Island

Sault Ste. Marie

26 September 2024 - Sault Ste. Marie

Arrival 26/9/2024 Departure 26/9/2024

The oldest city in Ontario and the centre of one of North America’s oldest settlements, Sault Ste. Marie has a rich historical heritage due to its Amerindian, British and French influences. Linked to its neighbouring and homonymous American city by a bridge spanning St. Marys River, the city owes its name to the river’s many rapids, called “les saults de Sainte-Marie” by French colonists. The gateway to the Algoma region, renowned for its wild expanses, Sault Ste. Marie is also known as the home of the National Historic Site of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal , which was completed at the end of the 19 th century and constitutes the final part of a navigation network that connects the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Superior.

Killarney

27 September 2024 - Killarney

Arrival 27/9/2024 Departure 27/9/2024

The historical village of Killarney , in Ontario, is located on the north shore of Georgian Bay , on the edge of Lake Huron . It was founded in 1820, making it one of the oldest villages in Canada. At that time, it was a fur trading post. Indigenous people were already very much present in this area, since its Ojibwe name means “canoe passage”. Dominated by the white quartzite ridges of the La Cloche Mountains , Killarney’s surroundings offer visitors a protected natural environment to discover on foot, in a kayak, or during outings in an inflatable dinghy. The pink granite coast and the sapphire-blue waters of the lake are a real treat for the eyes!

Parry Sound

28 September 2024 - Parry Sound

Arrival 28/9/2024 Departure 28/9/2024

The charming city of Parry Sound enjoys an exceptional natural setting in the heart of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve , east of Georgian Bay. A holiday destination favoured by the province’s inhabitants, the city and its surroundings offer a condensed version of all that the Great Lakes region has to offer: windswept forests of conifers, rocky shores characteristic of the Canadian Shield, beaches of fine sand, clear and calm waters producing magnificent reflections that change with the time of day and luminosity… A real paradise for fauna and flora, the place will delight fans of nature and photography.

Midland

29 September 2024 - Midland

Arrival 29/9/2024 Departure 29/9/2024

The town of Midland is located in the south of Georgian Bay on Lake Huron , near the picturesque Thirty Thousand Islands , an archipelago of granitic islands crowned with pine trees. The historical site of Sainte-Marie among the Hurons is nearby. This fenced community from the first half of the 17th century has been recreated to bring its story to life. Originally, it was the headquarters for the French Jesuit mission to the Huron-Wendat people. A living history museum immerses visitors in the life of the first Westerners to arrive in Canada. The region is ideal for myriad outdoor activities, such as bike riding, canoeing, hiking, and bird watching along the Wendat Trail.

Sailing along Flowerpot Island

30 September 2024 - Sailing along Flowerpot Island

Arrival 30/9/2024 Departure 30/9/2024

In the heart of Georgia Bay , discover the magnificent coastal landscapes of Flowerpot Island . Surrounded by crystal-clear water, the site is reputed for its sheer cliffs, its dense vegetation, its rare flora, its heritage lighthouse, and its two strange rock formations that look like flowerpots. A result of the actions of the wind and rain, these pillars of stone detached from the coast are one of the site’s curiosities and gave the island its name. Your ship will sail along these coasts and give you the opportunity to take magnificent photos of this island belonging to the Fathom Five National Marine Park, which is Canada’s oldest National Marine Conservation Area.

Sailing Lake Huron

30 September 2024 - Sailing Lake Huron

A natural border between the American State of Michigan and the Canadian province of Ontario, Lake Huron is one of the five American Great Lakes and one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. Comprising the main lake, Saginaw Bay, the North Channel and Georgian Bay, and home to around 30,000 islands , it offers varied coastal landscapes and unique views. From your ship, you’ll thus be able to admire the wild beauty of the wooded and at times craggy coastline of Manitoulin Island, or the spectacular cliffs of the Bruce Peninsular.

Sailing St. Clair River

1 October 2024 - Sailing St. Clair River

Arrival 1/10/2024 Departure 1/10/2024

Forming a natural line of separation between the United States and Canada, the St. Clair River , which flows from Lake Huron into Lake St. Clair, is a significant element of the Great Lakes Waterway . Used in the 18 th century for the fur trade by the French colonists of North America who sailed it on small boats to trade with the Amerindians, it was then travelled by freighters transporting lumber, iron ore and copper from the Great Lakes region to the cities of the Rust Belt.

Sailing through Detroit

1 October 2024 - Sailing through Detroit

During your navigation along the Detroit River, an important commercial waterway linking Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair to Lake Huron , you will sail along the largest city in Michigan. You’ll then enjoy panoramic views over the skyscrapers of the former Motor City , jewel of the automotive industry, Fordism and Motown music in the 20th century. You’ll also be able to admire the Ambassador Bridge , which spans the river and enables access to Windsor, on the Canadian shore of the river. This steel suspension bridge, over two kilometres long, was constructed in 1929. This bridge alone carries over 25% of trade between the United States and Canada.

Point Pelee National Park

2 October 2024 - Point Pelee National Park

Arrival 2/10/2024 Departure 2/10/2024

Point Pelee National Park lies at the southernmost point of the Canadian mainland and stretches out over a wooded peninsula extending out into Lake Erie . It is home to one of the few large marshes left in the Great Lakes system. Due to its value in maintaining biological diversity, this rare ecosystem is now protected under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. Located at the meeting point of two migratory corridors, the park is a paradise for bird watchers: more than 350 bird species can be found here. With options ranging from hiking to paddling, and bird-watching in the company of your naturalist guides, the programme for this port of call is very much centred on nature.

Sailing Lake Erie

3 October 2024 - Sailing Lake Erie

Arrival 3/10/2024 Departure 3/10/2024

Located to the south of Lake Huron and connected to Lake Ontario by the Welland Canal, Lake Erie, which owes its name to one of the Amerindian tribes which peopled its banks before the arrival of the French in the 17 th century, is remarkable for its unique ecosystem . Its shallow fish-filled waters make it an excellent fishing spot, while its banks, famous for their many migratory birds , attract photographers and ornithology enthusiasts.

Port Colborne

3 October 2024 - Port Colborne

Port Colborne is a small port city located in southern Ontario , at the mouth of the Welland Canal . It is well-known for one of the longest locks in the world: measuring 420 metres, this lock, the 8 th in the canal, has an observation footbridge and marks the final transit point before the Erie Canal . In addition to the discovery of this tremendous hydraulic infrastructure, this port of call will be your privileged access point to the famous Niagara Falls, renowned all over the world for their spectacular beauty. Located on the river of the same name, which means “water thunder” in Amerindian language, these wonders of nature are among the most powerful waterfalls in the world.

Toronto

4 October 2024 - Toronto

Arrival 4/10/2024 early morning Disembarkation 4/10/2024 at 7:00 am

The largest city in Canada and capital of the province of Ontario, Toronto fascinates as much by its incredible diversity as by its size. Immerse yourself for 4 days in the city's Art and Architecture, discovering its modernist masterpieces, spectacular skyscrapers and world class museums. Take a cruise on the downtown Chicago River and learn about the city and its history. Fine dining opportunities abound as you stroll around the legendary Oak Street. From arts and science to culture and gastronomy, this programme incorporates the essentials Chicago has to offer.

Meet and greet at Chicago O'Hare international airport arrival hall. Look for PONANT sign. You will be greeted by our local representative off the PONANT selected flight or any other flight (provided that you have previously communicated your flight schedule to your travel agent).

Dinner at leisure.

Today, your guide will point out historic areas, incredible photo opportunities and some of the world's most recognizable architecture in Chicago's "Loop." You will have the chance to get off the bus for photos and discover of a few pieces of the city's wonderful collection of public art - including Picasso, Chagall, Miro and Dubuffet. Chicago is a "Sister City" to Paris. The original plan included wide boulevards and many Beaux Arts structures including the magnificent Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park. You will travel on famed Lake Shore Drive where you'll see Chicago's iconic skyline reflected in glittering Lake Michigan.

Next, you will visit the renowned Art Institute of Chicago. Founded in 1879 and located in Chicago's Grant Park, it is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the United States. The collection includes extensive Impressionist works plus Renaissance, American and Asian masters. The new Modern Wing is a stunning building overlooking Millennium Park.

Afterwards, continue to explore the history and beautiful architecture of Chicago. On the Gold Coast near Lake Michigan, you'll see the mansions of early industrialists who built here after the Great Chicago Fire. Continue to trendy Lincoln Park to view the lovely gardens and discover how the city has kept its promise that the lakefront would forever be free and open to all.

Return to your hotel.

Your tour guide will have suggestions for dinner on your own.

Optional activity: Evening at the Jazz club

You will experience a classic Chicago evening! Historically, the city's unique location on the Great Lakes made it the crossroads of America for great food and music. Discover a famous spot for Chicago style BBQ baby back ribs, chicken, seafood and steaks.

Then you will go next door to an intimate Jazz Club. Sit back and enjoy some of the best musicians in the city in this "listening room" environment where jazz is revered. Some of the best known local and national jazz acts perform here. Acts range from standards to contemporary. You will be immersed in the joy that is jazz!

Day 3 - Chicago

Start your day with a trip to the leafy suburb of Oak Park. This is where the architect Frank Lloyd lived and worked. The first homes he designed are found on the lovely streets here. You will visit his Home and Studio for an in depth look at the master who was the forerunner of modern home design.

Return to Chicago to enjoy lunch in a local restaurant.

Next, discover the Wabash Arts Corridor. Discover wonderful murals inserted into the urban setting of the vibrant South Loop. Whether they are humorous, whimsical, or profound, they all tell you something about the artist and yourself. You will also see some stunning, long forgotten architecture on "Motor Row" where automobile showrooms were as beautiful as the vehicles they sold. See how "adaptive reuse" of factory buildings now creates a neighbourhood of loft style homes for the modern era.

In the same neighbourhood, visit Blues Heaven at Chess Records, a small museum honouring the Blues legends that made Chicago famous. Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Etta James, and Chuck Berry all recorded here. The Rolling Stones took their name from a Muddy Waters song and recorded "2120 S. Michigan Avenue" there in 1964 as an homage to this great bluesman.

Experience a private concert with one of the city's best blues artists during your visit!

Return to the hotel in time for dinner on your own.

Day 4 - Chicago/Milwaukee

Start your last day with the visit of Millennium Park, the beautiful centrepiece of downtown Chicago. Millennium Park boasts one of the most impressive collections of public art in the world. First planned in 1997 as a way to create new parkland in Grant Park and transform unsightly railroad tracks and parking lots, Millennium Park has evolved into the most significant millennium project in the world. Here you will find the Concert Pavilion designed by Frank Gehry, the beautiful Lurie Gardens and the beloved "Bean", (Anish Kapoor's "Cloud Gate") an enormous stainless-steel sculpture reflecting the skyline and a favourite spot for photos.

You will continue your city exploration with a Chicago River Architecture Cruise. Specially chartered by PONANT, you will find out how Chicago grew from a small settlement into one of the world's largest cities in less 100 years. You will float down the River discovering Chicago architecture and its history.

Today's skyline includes some of the world's most striking and innovative buildings.

After your lunch, board your bus for a 2-hours transfer to the port of Milwaukee to embark on board your ship.

Designed by French architect Jean-Paul Viguier, the Sofitel Magnificient Mile 5* is one of Chicago's most remarkable modern skyscrapers, located near the famous Magnificent Mile shopping street. There's a sophisticated but comfortable flair throughout the hotel, from the boisterous red-and-white décor at the restaurant CDA to the tidy natural-light-filled rooms with a panoramic view of the city.

  • 3-nights accommodation in Luxury room at the Sofitel Magnificent Mile 5* local standards (or similar), including breakfast.
  • Meals as mentioned in the programme.
  • Beverage package during meals (mineral water + 1 soft drink or 1 local beer or 1 glass of wine + 1 tea or coffee).
  • Other services not mentioned in the programme.
  • If you booked the optional activity: evening at the Jazz Club, it is mandatory to present your passport upon arrival at the jazz club as the entry is limited to adults over 21 years old in the United States.
  • The chartered cruise by PONANT is guaranteed from 50 passengers. If less than 50 passengers are booked, the cruise will be shared with local clients.

Can They Make Me a Moscow Mule?

Cool Cruiser

Dumb question I know, but I've been wondering this for a while, and I don't think I've seen it answered. Obviously not offered in Vintages, the Martini Bar, or World-Class, but what about at the Sunset Bar or in Michael's?

Also, Pimm's Cup, same question.

Yes to the Pimms in Michael's Club.

I was able to get a Moscow Mule at the World Class Bar on Equinox in December.

Yay! Thanks so much.

Ensemble Lounge or Passport bar (I forget) also offered them on Equinox. They now offer Ginger Beer on the ship which you need for the "mule".

The Martini bar, Sunset bar, Passport bar and Ensemble lounge all normally carry both ginger ale and ginger beer, so you shouldn't have a problem (as long as the bartender is somewhat knowledgeable).

so you shouldn't have a problem (as long as the bartender is somewhat knowledgeable).
I don't know about the knowledgeable part...I asked for a Paralyzer in a few bars on my March 2017 B2B Constellation cruise and they had no idea until I finally found a "knowledgeable" bartender midway thru my second cruise. I also asked for a Pain Killer during my 30 days on the ship and no bartender knew how to make one or the desire to google it.

Lived on these on Solstice last October! The barman in Ensemble Lounge made the best one ever. I would often stop by to get one, or he also worked at the Sunset Bar so also got them there during the day. I know Mast Bar also made them but w're not as good IMO.

Same for us...served in the copper mugs!

We're also on the Solstice. Do you remember his name?

I'm not really going on the cruise to drink, but I need a libation or two in evenings.

If you happen to find yourself on Qsine, they make a mighty fine version of the mule as well.

I've never found anyone to have the crystalised ginger but they still taste great

Can you get one on the classic package? They have become a go to of mine here at home!

midwestchick

What is a Moscow mule? Never heard of it.
Vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. Usually served in a special copper mug.
Are they good?

margsipie

On the Solstice now and I've had several in the Passport bar

Never had a problem getting anything if they had the makings, even if you needed to explain how to make it.

I like them because they're not too sweet, and I really love the spiciness of the ginger. I don't really like sweet drinks, but I can do a Pimm's cup because of the cucumber and lemon.

OCA REP

I believe that when ordering more obscure drinks, or something that you might prefer to be made a certain way, you should know the ingredients and be able to communicate that to the bartender. I would not assume a bartender is going to Google a drink recipe. Perhaps a PARALYZER or PAIN KILLER are well known cocktails, but I have never heard of them.

We enjoy a top-shelf margarita made according to a recipe we enjoy at home. A friendly discussion with the bartenders at the Mast Bar and Michael's Club, along with instructions on the proper preparation, got us service with a smile... and a nearly perfect margarita each time.

Enjoy yourself!

miched

The taste depends on the brand of ginger beer. There is Goslings, Bunderberg and Fever Tree to name the brands that they have had on board. Sometimes if you order one they may also use ginger ale. Fever Tree is rare. A 4 pack of 6.8oz bottles at the lowest price is about $5, available at Sur La Table for $8.

As with most drinks if you change the spirit it is a different drink. Use rum instead of vodka and it is a dark and stormy. That is usually made with Goslings Ginger Beer and Goslings rum. I prefer Kraken rum over the Goslings.

I hope not. Ginger ale is too sweet.
