Complete Guide on Kollimalai Tourism – Cottages, Places to Visit 2021

Kollimalai Tourism – A small hill station located in Namakkal district will leave you speechless with kollihill’s beauty and various kollihills cottages to stay. Kollihills has narrow 70 hair pin bends & so kollimalai tourism attracts bike riders from Tamilnadu and Karnataka(Bangalore) as it is located nearby and would only take 5 hours to reach the kolli hill station.

If you are lazy to read about then skip to the end and watch the video on Kollimalai Tourism.

Kollimalai Tourism

Located in Tamil Nadu above 1400M sea level, Kolli malai is also called as mountain of death but not because of any deaths happening over there but it just sounds cool to call that way and because of the thrill of sharp hairpin bends. The meaning of Kolli hills originates from the mythological story of the goddess kolli pavai also known as Ettukkai Amman who helps the siddhas who come to collect medicinal plants and to meditate peacefully inside the kolli hills forest and if there’s some evil spirit tries to distract them then the goddess would kill them.

How to Reach Kollimalai

If you are planning to reach kolli hills by Train or Plane then Salem is the nearest railway station & has the nearest airport.

If you are planning to visit kollimalai by road then you’d be surprised with its beauty and breathtaking views along the hairpin bend. I’d suggest you to take a bike because it’s completely a different ride that every bikers must try in Tamil Nadu(hope you’re not a ladakh fan).

We had pit-stops in many places before reaching the top of the kollimalai and one such place had to be mentioned is 34th hairpin bend. This kollimalai was ruled by the legendary philanthropist valvil ori who’s a great archer and his strength is mentioned as a painting in the walls of 34th bend. If you are a fan of off-beat places then check out Megamalai & Ramakkalmedu tourism.

Places to Visit in Kollimalai (Kolli Hills)

The frequently visited places (also which i’ve enjoyed) are :

  • Aagaya Gangai – This falls is a huge one which is famous in kollihills because of its medicinal values. People here believe that the waters descends from the forest carrying along with it all the essence of the plants it comes across and thus it is said to have few medicinal properties. I have been twice to Aagaya gangai and I’d say the best time to visit this falls is either at the starting of the Monsoon or after the Monsoon season because the water will rush with full flow. There’s a small room to keep your belongings before you go to bath in the falls and during heavy rains you will have to take the support of the ropes attached near the sides to reach the falls. One issue with reaching this falls for older people is that there are 1000 steps that had to be walked down to reach the falls.
  • Kollipavai Temple – How can you miss this place(even as an atheist) you can have a look at the ettukkai amman inside the ettukai amman temple who’s believed to be the goddess saving the siddhars in the forest.
  • Masilla Falls – If you are not planning to visit the Aagaya Gangai for any reason then you can go to Masilla falls. (No water is found in Masila falls during summer days)
  • The Siddhar Caves – There are few caves near the falls where one can visit them if you’re a spiritual person and you might be interested to find some medicinal herbs or medicinal plants on the way.
  • The Arapaleeswarar Temple – This is located next to the Aagaya gangai falls and is opened only during the prayer times, so you plan your visit to this Arapaleeswarar Temple accordingly.
  • Sunday Market – There’s a market in Kollimalai which will open only during Sundays and this is the best place to have a look if you’re planning to buy fruits or vegetables as they’re cheap on those days.
  • Namma Falls – This one is a small falls but worth a visit.

Activities to Do in Kollimalai Hills:

The best activity is already mentioned that is arranged by trekking clubs to the Aagaya gangai waterfalls and be careful inside the reserve forests. Other activities for the nature lovers includes trekking with permission through the reserve forests with  filled with tropical plants and during full moon days locals claim that Siddhars can be seen meditating and visit there to collect medicinal herbs.

Stay in a good resort and have a campfire during night. There are many viewpoints in Kollimalai and tourist spot in Kollimalai along the hairpin bends such as Namma falls, selur nadu, sirumalai view point and seeku parai that you’ll enjoy witnessing the sunsets and sunrise.

You can also know about the history of valvil ori from the locals.

Resorts to Stay in Kollimalai Hills: Kollimalai Cottages

If you are planning for a one day trip then I’d suggest visiting atleast Aagaya Gangai falls but if you’re planning to stay two days to enjoy the tourist spot in kollimalai then you can find the best resort or wood house from Booking.com and other apps. Few good resort which has more review is

We stayed in this beautiful cottage in our Kolli hills trip in 2021. It is located few kms from the Aagaya Gangai falls.

How Safe is Kollimalai?

Well, if you are planning to trek in the forest to reach the kolli hills then it is quite risky. Otherwise for a normal trip with family or friends this is a safe place to come. People here are helpful and humble so solo women travellers need not worry about the safety.

Looks like you visited at the most appropriate climate (just after it rained). The Pictures help everyone visualize the feeling of the climate and make everyone wish they were there to enjoy it. I agree to the earlier comment that two wheeler is the best mode of transport for such a trip. The fun of climbing all the way down to the falls is in getting drenched in the cold waters of the Falls and the stream. Looks like you missed it. It is believed that the water is rich in herbal medicinal qualities as it flows through the forest.

Kolli Hills: Riding Along This Sinuous Road With 70 Hairpin Bends Can Be a Challenge to Avid Bikers!

To reach the top of Kolli Hills, one must brave steep ghat roads and sharp bends, not just 10 or 20 but a total of 70 continuous hairpin bends that mark the nearly 50-km long mountain route! It’s truly one roller coaster of a ride uphill and clearly, it’s not for the faint-hearted. It can even be a nightmare for people with motion sickness, but for avid bikers, this exhilarating motorbike adventure may always be beckoning.

Table of Contents

Where is Kolli Hills?

Kolli Hills, also called Kolli Malai, is situated in the Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu. A scenic mountain range in the Eastern Ghats, it lies at an altitude of 1300 m above the mean sea level. This place remains hidden under the canopy of its dense vegetation and is untouched by commercialization. Despite its unexploited natural beauty, Kolli Hills hasn’t yet claimed its well-deserving place on India’s tourism map. However, this hidden wonder doesn’t escape the notice of avid motorcycle riders rooting for adventurous road trips in India .

How to reach Kolli Hills?

Kolli Hills is situated at a distance of 200 km from Coimbatore, 258 km from Bengaluru and 360 km from Chennai. These cities act as a perfect start for a long road trip over the weekend. The mountainous road begins at Kalappanaickenpatti and leads you through the beautiful landscape (although on a rather windy path) to Semmedu – the hilltop where you find yourself amidst the serenity of the hills.

Trichy Airport and Salem railway station serve the regular tourists arriving from Bangalore, Coimbatore, and Chennai airport s or railway stations. You can hire a taxi from the airport or railway station to the Kolli Hills, if you do not want to ride/drive by yourself. State-run buses are also available from these cities.

What is Riding Up the Windy Route of Kolli Hills Like?

A medley of emotions like that of amazement, excitement, and anxiety can take hold of you as you maneuver your way through the zigzag road that throws continuous challenges in the form of hairpin bends, one at every 650 m or so. The temperature dips with rising elevation and at certain points, the road gets so narrow that it cannot accommodate more than one vehicle (four-wheeler). It indeed takes a lot of mastery over your vehicle to negotiate these dangerous hairpin bends. But the real thrill lies in conquering challenges, isn’t it?

Moreover, the stone markers placed at the end of every turn may cheer you up by displaying the number of hairpin bends that you have successfully crossed, and the cool mountain breeze may sweep over you every now and then as if to refresh you.

Kolli Hills also rewards adventurous travelers with amazing views of nature. You can take them all in by pulling your vehicle up at the vantage points (although lush greenery trails alongside the entire stretch of the curvy road, do not dare to shift your focus while riding as it can be dangerous). Five major viewpoints, namely Selur, Sirumalai, Binnam, Seeku Parai, and Valappurnadu, offer panoramic views of the green hills and valleys against the clear blue skies. You cannot help but gaze in wonderment at the breathtaking scenery!

Kolli Hills Attractions

Though Kolli Hills is infamous for the winding road (Road MDR181) that cuts through it, this is not all it has got to offer to tourists. The hills are home to two temples and five waterfalls. Two of the most popular attractions in Kolli Hills are:

Arapaleeswarar Temple

An ancient Shiva temple is the reason why Kolli Hills is popular as a pilgrim destination in South India. It is believed that the temple has been in existence since the Sangam period. According to folklore, the Shiva lingam enshrined in this temple was found by a farmer while he was plowing the land. When the plow hit something concrete, he noticed blood oozing from the earth. He dug further and discovered the Shiva lingam. The wound on the lingam is said to be visible even today.

Agaya Gangai Falls

A major tourist attraction in Kolli Hills, Agaya Gangai Falls is situated about 1 km from the Arapaleeswarar temple. One has to climb down nearly 1000 steps to reach the falls. The steps are steep and the climb is tiring, but the beauty of the falls is something that cannot be missed. Falling from a height of 300 ft, the silvery cascade is a sight to behold. Get a natural massage under the falls to soothe your tired muscles or take a rejuvenating dip in the pond near the rocks.

Some Facts About Kolli Hills

  • Kolli Hills is named after the local Goddess Ettukai Amman, also called Kollipavai, who is said to protect the hills.
  • The tropical moist evergreen forests that cover the mountains provide shelter to diverse wildlife, including endemic species.
  • Several medicinal plants and herbs grow abundantly in this area.

So, Kolli Hills Road is daring you to bike your way through its 70 hairpin bends. Are you game for this challenging adventure? Spare a day on your Chennai or Bangalore itinerary for this thrilling ride and enjoy an experience of a lifetime. Get your flight tickets booked with Indian Eagle and save huge on airfare!

Kollimalai (Kolli Hills in English) is a hill station located in Tamil Nadu’s Namakkal district, which is less popular among the tourists compared to the likes of Ooty, Kodaikanal, and Yercaud. As a result, the location is less crowded and still upholds its natural charm devoid of the commercial incursion. That is a boon for backpackers as the Kolli Hills offers visitors the best experience possible. As the title suggests, Kollimalai is informally known as The Mountain of Death because of 70 consecutive hairpin bends in its route. Well laid roads and the numerous hairpin bends make Kolli Hills a favorite riding route for Bikers across the state. Here, I am sharing my experience of riding to Kollimalai on a two-day bike trip from Chennai along with a dozen other fellow bikers.

Kollimalai Hills Tamil Nadu

Kollimalai Road Trip – My Journey!

After weeks of discussion in our WhatsApp group, we finalized Kolli Hills as the destination. Finally, the day arrived, and we started our ride from Chennai a bit early around 6 am. We had to beat the traffic congestion caused by the Mofussil buses right outside Chennai Suburbs. After we crossed the Chennai outskirts, we had a group huddle to discuss the day’s travel plan. Our route to reach Kolli Hills was through Tindivanam, Villupuram, Ulundurpet, and Attur. Kolli Hills is around 350 kilometers away from Chennai, and it takes a little above 6 hours to reach. The first half of the route till Ulundurpet is on the National Highway 38, which makes the ride a little monotonous. We broke for breakfast near Villupuram Toll Booth at around 9 am. Then got ourselves prepared for the ride we were all waiting for, as we had to take a right at the Ulundurpet roundabout to join the National Highway 79.

A Scenic Path: The route from Ulundurpet to Kolli’s foothills is an idyllic passage as it passes through the highway that cleaves through rocky hill ranges. After turning right at Ulundurpet, we traveled on the highway for 80 kilometers till Attur. This stretch is a national highway and hence is a four-lane road. But from there on, there are two routes that lead to Kolli Hills.

Kollimalai Hills Foothills

We settled on a shorter but narrower route as it is much more fun and engaging. At Attur, we took a two-hour break, as we needed to check oil levels on a couple of bikes. Also, during the vehicle service, we had Ragi Porridge (Kezhvaragu Koozh in Tamil) from a street vendor for lunch. Always try to have light food on your road trips. After the bike service, we set off from Attur at around 2 pm. The roads from there on were narrow and bendy, but it was the whole purpose of choosing this route. To complement the roads, there were paddy fields on both sides. The rural backdrop and pleasant weather made it an enjoyable ride in the afternoon.

The Thrilling Uphill Ride: Once you near the Kolli Hills Range, you would sense the change in humidity. This is due to the fact that Kolli Hills Range encompasses three important forest ranges in Central Tamil Nadu. The region is famous for rare herbs, which are not available elsewhere. While I rode in a Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 till Kolli Foothills, I switched my bike for a Pulsar 220. So the uphill ride starts at Karavalli, where there is a forest check post. After a few kilometers, you would encounter the first hairpin bend with a signboard mentioning the details.

Kollimalai Hills Kolli Ghat Road Hairpin Bend

It was an absolute joy to ride on the Kolli Ghat Road as the hairpin bends kept on arriving one after the other, and each bend was unique. Midway through the uphill ride, we encountered few viewpoints. We stopped at one of the notable viewpoints which had a panoramic view of the valley below. We spent 15 minutes at the viewpoint clicking pictures and grasping the view of surroundings. After spending ample time, we started to proceed further.

The Overnight Stay: We finally completed all 70 hairpin bends, and it approximately took one hour to reach the town. It was late evening, and unlike other hill stations, it was less populous. Located at an elevation of 1300 meters from the sea level, the weather was pleasantly cold in the evening. I, along with another friend, parted from the group to go scout for a location to set up camp. While we were out looking for a camp spot, it started to rain heavily. So we returned to our rendezvous point and decided to stay in a hotel. Another point to consider is that the town does not have several options to stay. We found a cheap hostel and spent the night playing cards for a while. The rains continued to pour till the dawn, which made us realize that renting rooms was a fortunate decision.

The Solo Return: The next morning, our group decided to go check a few places before returning to Chennai. First, we visited Masila Falls, which was just a few kilometers away from our rooms. Though not as enormous as Aagaya Gangai Falls, Masila Falls will not disappoint you in any way. It is easy to access and will have good water flow to take a bath under. Later, my mates wanted to check out Aagaya Gangai falls. I chose not to visit the falls as I had to return to Chennai by evening. After bidding adieu to my fellow riders, I started my downhill ride while they were on their way to Aagaya Gangai Falls. Midway through the Ghat Road, I found a pathway amidst woods that lead to a hidden viewpoint.

Kollimalai Hills Trail Hidden Viewpoint

This viewpoint was damaged, and I had to climb the broken ladder to reach the cabin, which was standing tall at 20 meters. Climbing the broken ladder turned out to be fruitful as the viewpoint had some of the best views overlooking the valley. After the descend, the ride from Kolli Foothills to Chennai took me around 7 hours with some heavy downpour near Tindivanam. Overall, the two-day trip was considerably spent on the roads. After all, that was the whole purpose of the trip.

Kolli Malai (Kolli Hills) – Things to Know!

How to Travel: Kolli Hills is still an under-developed hill station in Tamil Nadu. As far as public transport is concerned, there are daily buses from Salem and Namakkal Bus Stands. But do not depend on government buses as the service is not up to the mark. The best way to travel to Kollimalai is in your vehicle.

When to Travel: Except for the rainy season, you can travel to Kolli Hills all year round. The Ghat Roads might have mudslides during heavy rains.

What to Do: Aagaya Gangai Waterfalls is the major attraction of the Kolli Hills. It is a 300 feet tall waterfall and hence rightly named as Aagaya Gangai, meaning “Ganges from the skies.” Located near the Arapaleeswarar temple, the silvery cascade is not easy to reach as it takes around 1300 steps to reach. Apart from this, there are few other attractions like Masila Falls, Ettukkai Amman Temple, SikkuParai, etc. Kolli Malai is well-known for the presence of numerous caves scattered around the hills, some of which serve as a meditational abode for sadhus.

Kollimalai – Key Takeaways!

Kollimalai Hills Overlook

Visiting Kollimalai is different from traveling to other hill stations in Tamil Nadu. It is not a commercialized zone, and basic amenities such as hotels, roads, and, eateries are scarce. However, these reasons contribute to its richness and candor. Backpackers and Riders visit Kolli Malai for its desolation, but at the same time, the location offers the thrill and natural beauty. With all these attributes, Kollimalai remains to be a mystery by holding on to its roots.

Kolli Hills Is The Scenic Road Trip You Must Take From Bangalore

Photo of Shwetha

If you’ve been reading my posts, I’m sure you know by now how much we love Bike Rides. Long or short, it doesn’t matter. Like someone once said,

Also Read: Water Parks In Bangalore

“Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul.”

One place that has been high up on our Ride-To list for a very long time was Kolli Hills or KolliMalai. This monster of a ride always intrigued us since we have to ride through 70 consecutive hair pin bends to get to the top. The most we had done until now was 36 which was in Ooty. This was almost double that.So naturally we were excited when we finally decided to check this off of our list.

These spectacular series of curves have also made it to the Limca Book of Records for the Most Number of Consecutive Hairpin Bends (Or so I’ve been told).

Distance from Bangalore: 280 kms Time Taken: Approx 6 hrs.

Bangalore – Kolli Hills:

We started the journey from Bangalore on a cool morning. Watched as the sun rose alongside the road. We have been through this highway (NH7) plenty of times now and it has come to be one of our favorites to ride on. This stretch of 4 lane drive until Rasipuram will keep you longing for more. Pleasant weather, beautiful vistas, and of course the roar of the Royal Enfield. Enough to put me in a better mood any day.

Route: Bangalore – Krishnagiri – Salem – Rasipuram – Semmedu (Kolli Hills)

The road is excellent until Rasipuram. You need to take left from NH7 towards Rasipuram and then ask for directions. A relatively small patch of road just before the Ghat road is pretty bad. But apart from that, we found no reason to complaint.

This ride up the winding roads with beautiful panoramas stretching as far as the eyes can see was mesmerizing. The lush green forests surrounding those monstrous curves added to the beauty of the place. I got to see pine cone trees for the first time ever, oh they are so pretty. The roads are strewn with tiny pine cones. *heart-eyes* We stopped at quite a few places to click pictures and marvel at the beauty around.

Since this quaint hill station is situated about 1300m above MSL, we were hoping the temperature would drop as we ascended the hills. But unfortunately, we were disappointed. The temperature was well above 27⁰C. This was mostly because we visited this place smack in the middle of summer.

Slowly but steadily, we devoured the hairpin bends one by one.The feeling you get when you complete this last stretch is something I cannot put in words. That picture with the last milestone and that smile on everyone’s face was priceless.

Stay: We stayed at Nallathambi Resort. There are very few stay option up there and many of them had very bad reviews on Trip Advisor. We managed to book this place in the last minute and thankfully it was a good choice. The food here was pretty bad, especially for vegetarians. But we had to settle for it since there are not many restaurants to go out and eat.

Few Pointers: Best time to visit would be right after Monsoons. Thoroughly look up the Hotel/Resort before you book in order to avoid an unpleasant situation (It is very hard to find accommodation once you reach there).

SeekuParai View Point (Sunset Point):

It is a perfect spot to enjoy the sun setting in the far distance with spectacular views of the valley below. There is a small watch tower of sorts where you can sit and wait for the sun to slowly descend into the horizon. You get to see the sky changing colors ever so slowly, and just like that all the weariness of the long ride vanishes.

Photo of Kolli Hills Is The Scenic Road Trip You Must Take From Bangalore 6/8 by Shwetha

On our way back to the hotel, we stopped by the market and ate steaming hot Paddus (A south Indian delicacy, much like Dosa). We also had some much needed Filter Coffee. Yum!

Few Pointers: It is hard to find the Sunset Point since most boards are written in Tamil. If you ask around, the locals will guide you to it (though language is a barrier). :|

We planned to wake up super early to visit the temple and the falls today. But surprise surprise, we slept in. We decided to head straight to the falls and then on our way back visit the temple.

AgayaGangai Falls:

This is the most famous falls situated atop Kolli Hills. It literally translates to Ganges of the Sky . It is a 300 Feet waterfall which flows into River Aiyaru and is surrounded by mountains and thick forest.

You need to walk down quite a long flight of stairs to reach this majestic beauty. To be precise 1200 odd steep steps. It is a daunting task. The start to this trek is situated right outside Sri Arappaleeswarar Swamy Temple. Nominal fee is charged at the entrance.

Enthusiastic bunch that we are, we started the descent with high hopes that the waterfalls will be in all its glory. But since it was the middle of summer, this possibility was a little uncertain. 500 steps down the way and my legs start wobbling and you realize how steep these steps are indeed. Now you start worrying about how on earth are we going to climb back up? I turn around and look at the steps and they seem never ending. To add to the dismay, we see people huffing and puffing profusely on their way back up. Worried but determined, we move forward. :|

Photo of Kolli Hills Is The Scenic Road Trip You Must Take From Bangalore 7/8 by Shwetha

When we finally got to the end of the steps, we had to further tread our way through some large boulders. Right about now you hear the falls roaring. Sweaty and tired, but excited to see this beauty. And she did not disappoint. :) Even in the middle of summer, she was flowing rapidly. I can only imagine her might during the Monsoon season. It was so refreshing to just sit by the falls and stare at this amazing white beauty. She looked so delicate in contrast to the surrounding rugged mountains. Truly breathtaking! The water forms a pool of sorts at the bottom where you can take a dip. There are even railings that take you right under the falls for those brave hearts.

After spending quite some time here, enjoying the cool breeze and the occasional spray of water, we started our ascent back. After about 100 steps, I was out of breath. Even with short breaks and sufficient hydration, I had such a hard time. My legs were wobbling well beyond control. My calf muscles had reached their limit and I was panting like crazy. Well, I thought I was going to die there. No, honestly! But, yeeyyyy I made it back alive!! :D

Few Pointers: This place is not for children, pregnant women and the elderly. Carry enough water since you will be needing it the most. There are no shops or washrooms near the falls. So buy water and maybe an energy bar before you start the trek down. Don’t exert yourself too much. Slow and steady does the charm. Also don’t drink too much water, small sips should do. Don’t carry luggage or even hand bags since they will only bear you down. This place seriously needs to put up a sign board warning people that this is not for the faint hearted. A lot of people who visit the temple start down this path with all their luggage and tiny tots running along, which can get pretty arduous.

After successfully making it to the top, we felt too sweaty and dirty and didn’t want to visit a place of worship in that state. So we decided to skip the temple and head back to the hotel. After a long relaxing shower and a hearty lunch, we started our journey back to Bangalore.

Kolli Hills – Bangalore:

The ride down the Ghat section was decent and easily completed. As we reached the bottom, we realized the temperature was soaring above 35⁰C. Riding in that heat with heavy riding gear on was a horrifying task. Even the wind that was blowing was hot. :(

Photo of Kolli Hills Is The Scenic Road Trip You Must Take From Bangalore 8/8 by Shwetha

Since we weren’t interested in riding post sun down, we sped up, taking very short breaks. Enjoying a splendid sunset along the way, we reminisced about completing this much awaited ride successfully. In times when hill stations are infamous for being over populated and polluted, this rustic little beauty is an eye opener.

Kollimalai Hills

Location: Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu , Google Maps   Altitude:  1300 meters or 4,265 feet (approximate)   Famous For :Offbeat Hill Station, Waterfalls, Famous Viewpoints, and Ancient temples   Ideal Duration: 2 to 3 days   Nearest Airport:Trichy   Nearest Railhead: Salem

Origin of the Name:

The Kolli Hills are presented in multiple works of classical Tamil literature such as Silappathigaram, Manimekalai, Purananuru, and Akananuru. The region was ruled by Valvil Ori around 200 CE, who is praised as one of the seven great philanthropists of ancient Tamil Nadu. His valor and marksmanship are sung by several poets, and his exploits are a popular part of folklore. Ori is said to have killed wild animals such as a lion, bear, deer, and a boar with a single arrow. The hills are said to be protected by Kollipavai also called “Ettukkai Amman”, the local deity. According to legend, the sages chose Kolli hills when they were looking for a peaceful place to do their penance. However, the demons invaded the hills to disrupt the penance when the sages began their rituals. The sages prayed to Kollipavai, who according to the myth, chased away the demons with her enchanting smile. The Kollipavai Temple is still worshipped here and her smile is respected by the people. The mountains often come across as an eerie place in contemporary tales due to the unexplored and less traveled terrain. The locals said that even at some places one can hear the presence of Saptha Kannigal, (The Seven Virgin Angels).

Hills And Hairpin Bends:

Kolli Hills is one of the most mesmerizing mountain ranges situated in Central Tamil Nadu and spread over the Namakkal district and Tiruchirapalli district of India. It is also called Kolli Malai in Tamil from the background of the Goddess who protected the entire locality. The mountains are over almost 1000 to 1300 meters in height and cover an area of approximately 280 km. Additionally, these hills are a part of the Eastern Ghats, which is a mountain range that runs mostly parallel to the East coast of Southern India.

If you are planning to visit tourist places around Trichy? Kolli Malai Hills will be one of the wonderful places to visit. Start exploring tourist places by staying at Ramyas Hotels with comfortable rooms, tasty foods & great offers. Book Rooms Here

One must pass the strange Hairpin bends in order to reach the mighty mountains for a spectacular view. Kolli Hills road comprises 70 dangerous yet thrilling hairpin bends. Young people usually prefer traveling by bike with their friends especially for a weekend getaway as it would be an unforgettable experience with enjoying the beautiful sky, the smell of the herbal plants, and the tricky path towards the destination. People can also reach the place by car, bus, and train. Kollimalai Hills is hard to drive due to its numerous hairpin bends, but it’s not too dangerous by ghat road standards. The most tricky section of the road is an ascent that starts from Karavalli and ends at Solakkau. One must have all safety measures while traveling and ensure a safe journey with their family and friends.

Best Time to Visit :

Kolli Hills in Tamil Nadu can be visited all around the year apart from the month of January because the temperatures drop down considering the altitude of this picturesque destination. In all the other months Kolli Hills weather is quite pleasant. Hence, the most effective time to go to Kollimalai is from February to December. Also, since there is a unit of a restricted range of attractions, a perfect period of two to three days would be enough to explore the most effective of the Hills.

The Hidden Herbal Treasure:

Other than the historical significance, the mountains are covered with evergreen forests. The increasing areas of forests have been cleared for farming purposes. Farm products of the mountain ranges include black pepper , jackfruit , banana , pineapple , Oranges , Tapioca , and other spices . Rice and other minor millets (Foxtail, Finger Millet, and Little Millet) form the staple food of the tribal people who inhabit these mountains. The jackfruit grown on these mountains is well known for its taste and fragrance and is often soaked in wild honey that is also harvested from these mountains. The farm is worth visiting, as Kolli Hills is better known for its medicinal plants than anything else. A wide variety of medicinal plants and herbs are used in Ayurveda and Siddha treatments. The Unani medicine is nurtured, cultivated, gathered, and sent from here to various parts of the city. The mountains are covered by green vegetation in the spring and monsoon and are streaked with streams. There are three reserve forests that are controlled by the Government of Tamil Nadu, namely Ariyur Solai, Kundur Nadu, Pulianjolai .

Home for animals:

The forests here are rich and diverse giving importance to both Flora and Fauna. These forests are home to several species of endemic trees and plants. Kolli hills are said to have the largest expanse of evergreen forest in the entire Southern part of the Eastern Ghats . Several coffee plantations, fruit orchards, and silver-oak estates occur in this region. Wildlife such as Sloth bear , barking deer , slender loris , Indian pangolin , jackals , mongoose , palm civet , and many reptiles including endemic species like the lizards and rare non-venomous snake of the family Uropeltidae including the recently discovered Uropeltis rajendrani , Rhinophis goweri , the endangered Python molurus and a number of birds such as Crested Serpent Eagle , Indian Grey Hornbill , laughing thrush are found in Kolli Hills. Among these lizards such as Hemiphyllodactylus kolliensis and Hemidactylus kolliensis are endemic only to Kolli Hills.
