Cartagena, Colombia

Description.

One of the more interesting cities on your itinerary steeped in history. This was the transit port for all the wealth Spain derived from South America. The famous "Old City" is comprised of 12 square blocks filled with attractions, boutiques and restaurants. Throughout Colombia, the Spanish Empire's influence in the New World is self-evident. Its fortress walls, quaint narrow streets, and balconied houses are all vivid reminders of Spain's hold on Cartagena and throughout the Caribbean and South America. This is the land of El Dorado and flamboyant adventurers in search of the ever-elusive gold. Cartagena's well-constructed fortifications defended its borders against seafaring pirates whose attacks lasted for more than 200 years. Today this modern and bustling city, seaport, and commercial center still boasts much of its original colonial architecture. Your journey here will provide you with a significant link to the region's grand past. **Please note that passengers may encounter numerous local vendors at various tourist locations and may find them to be persistent in their sales offers.

More about Cartagena, Colombia Points of Interest

The walled historic center of Cartagena is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its winding streets lined with Spanish Colonial architecture display colorfully painted buildings, local bars and restaurants.

Considered by many the most impressive city walls in the world, Las Murallas began construction after an attack by Sir Francis Drake at the end of the 16th century.

Majestically standing guard on a hillside overlooking the city and harbor is Castillo de San Felipe, a fortress built by the Spanish for protection against pirates while shipping gold out to Europe.

Behind a charming, colonial facade, the palace museum displays instruments of torture from the Spanish Inquisition, pre-Columbian, colonial and independence-era art.

The cathedral is one of the largest in a series of fortresses with a massive exterior and simple interior. Partially demolished by Sir Francis Drake's cannons, it was completed in 1602.

Gold and pottery collections of the Tayrona, Calima and Sinú people are on display, as well as panel exhibitions about the Atlantic coast cultures.

Built atop a hill, this 17th-century monastery features a chapel, a colonial museum and a spectacular view of the city, and remains inhabited by monks even today.

This presentation of music and dance takes place at the historic Heredia Theater. Five distinct dances from three important regions of Colombia are performed by a professional dance company, from the Atlantic Coast (Cumbia), the Pacific Coast (Currulao and Abosao), and the Los Andes region (the Market Place and the Indian Legend).

Three Must-try Cartagena Shore Excursions to Historic Attractions

princess cruise cartagena excursions

With so many things to do at every port, and never enough time to do it all, seeing the best of every location is easier said than done. When your Panama Canal cruise docks in Cartagena, Colombia, consider these excursions that are rich in history and beautiful in nature.

  • The Walled City of Cartagena As one of the most beautiful cities across South America, the Old City of Cartagena is nicknamed "The Walled City" because of its amazingly tall walls, known as Las Murallas , which protect the city from every angle. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic centre remains a popular hub, featuring restaurants, colourful colonial buildings, and winding streets. This historic attraction was founded in 1533 and much of its architecture, such as the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas and the strong forts of San Fernando and San Jose, still stands tall.
  • Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas This historic attraction is a great fortress that was built by the Spanish for protection, in particular to prevent pirates from stealing the city's gold. Many enemies and thieves tried to break it down, destroy it, and turn it into ruins, but all have failed. Today, the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas (Fort of San Felipe) is a prominent aspect of Cartagena's skyline, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Deemed the largest Spanish fort in the New World, a visit to the Fort of San Felipe will leave you impressed. Marvel in this testament to Spanish military engineering — or just enjoy the panoramic views it affords.
  • La Popa Monastery Still inhabited by monks and built in the 1600s, La Popa Monastery sits atop a hill, the highest point in the city, offering a stunning 360 degree view of Cartagena from above. You’ll want to bring your camera, especially if the weather permits. There is also a colonial museum with exhibits, and a beautiful chapel and courtyard.
  • A Gruesome Historic Museum: The Palace of Inquisition Those who can handle a little horror might enjoy the Historical Museum of Cartagena . While this historic site is both attractive and welcoming from the outside, with its colonial-style façade, inside lurks terrible remnants from the Spanish Inquisition. Visitors to the museum can observe torture equipment and historic artefacts from the Spanish Inquisition, which will forever alter their perspective of the event. Despite its dark past, the city is now a place of great beauty and serenity. These Cartagena shore excursions will enhance your visit to this fascinating city on your next Panama Canal cruise , and invigorate your sense of adventure. Princess cruise excursion. Hop on Hop off bus.

The time allotted for this excursion was not enough. There is no way you can stop at the 9 designated stops and get off to look around. The bus drops off and picks up from each stop every 30 minutes. We only walked around the old walled city. Be forewarned that you will be constantly badgered by local people selling goods on the street. It is extremely crowded and hot. Bring bottled water with you to stay hydrated.

Even though Cartagena is a small city but it would much more enjoyable and easy to take the City Sightseeing hop on hop off bus due to the heat and humidity that make it unbearable for walking. It is a saving to buy online for $24 than paying at the booth for $36 but with one inconvenience thing is you have to print out the voucher, they do not accept the mobile voucher.

Most disorganized thing i have every been a part of in all my years of travel. Done this tour off of a NCL cruise they should not sell this tour. Don’t do it.

The sights were good , but the audio was not working and we could not hear the dialogue. Trying to find a copier in Cartegena was not easy. We stayed at a AirBNB the did not have a printer, and decided to take the tour which was purchased online. But bus only accepted printed vouchers. Finally a hotel allowed us to use their printer. A scanner should be given to drivers to use! Paper should be obsolete.

Great combination of a knowledgeable and approachable guided tour by foot (great tour guide!!) through the old centre and a hop-on hop-off bus. Recommended if you are in Cartagena and want to get to know the city.

Cartagena was one of the stops on a cruise of the Panama Canal. Did the hop on and hop off bus. Really worth it. You see allot of Cartagena and the bus guide well informed and friendly. He knew much about the history of the city, the residents, the culture and kept the “ solicitors” at bay. The city itself vibrant and exciting. It was very hot when we arrived in early October. So glad to went. We loved the culture, the colors, the people and the food. If you get the chance, it’s worth it!

Which Princess excursion in Cartagena?

By Tobermory , November 26, 2007 in Colombia

Recommended Posts

Cool Cruiser

We will be in Cartagena, Columbia, on a Princess cruise in January.

We are undecided about which of two Princess excursions to take. The two excursions are "Best of Cartagena and Fortress" and "Scenes of Caragena."

The descriptions of each of the two tours are:

Best of Cartagena and Fortress - Pass through Manga residential area where some of the mansions have been restored to their original splendor. Continue up the winding road to the Convento de la Popa, with its breathtaking view of the harbor and city. Visit the monastery with its ornate, 22-karat gold foil altar and a lovely, flower-filled courtyard. Continue to the Fort of San Felipe de Barajas, a 17th-century construction which is the most important work of Spanish military engineering in South America. Next, visit Las Bovedas (The Dungeons) for approximately 20 minutes of handicraft shopping. Pass through Sim?n Bolivar Square and the Inquisition Palace before continuing on to the Church of San Pedro Claver, the patron saint of slaves, for a short visit. Before departing the walled city, enter the Navy Museum and learn about Cartagena's naval history. Drive to the modern residential area of Bocagrande, renowned for its wide variety of shops. Here, you will find Colombia?s famous native gem, the emerald, along with handicrafts, leather goods, and coffee at the Pierino Gallo Shopping Mall.

Scenes of Cartagena - Board your air-conditioned transportation for the narrated drive to La Popa Monastery. La Popa sits atop Cartagena's highest hill and offers spectacular panoramic views of the city and harbor. Stop for a photo of the impressive Forteleza de San Felipe before entering the old walled city. On the way to San Pedro Claver Church marvel at the collection of old buildings, fortifications, and homes with their colorful balconies. A short stop will be made at the church which was constructed in 1603 and later dedicated to this patron saint of Columbia. Next head to the Navy Museum and learn about Cartagena?s naval history. Finally, drive through the residential area of Bocagrande where a stop will be made for shopping prior to your return to the ship.

As far as we can see, the difference between the two excursions is the stop at the Fortress de San Felipe. Otherwise, does anyone know if the two tours are identical? We would like an opportunity to walk in the old part of Cartagena -- do either of these tours provide such an opportunity? We had been considering the walking tour of the old city, but it appears that the other two tours provide more opportunities for sightseeing and seeing more than the walking tour would.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Looking forward to your comments. Thank you.

We did the Fortress & Best of Cartagena by Princess. I think it was tour #100A. It was only $49 pp, I think I recall, and was quite extensive. We thoroughly enjoyed it, and we did get about a 2-3 block walk thru the old city streets (reminded us of Sevilla, Spain) to the Cathedral.

Choose the one that includes the fortress - it was very interesting and some good views as well. The best views of the city are from La Popa, which sits high atop the tallest hill. When your ship enters the bay, look to the right and the little white building on top of the highest point is La Popa.

We were very surprised at the size of Cartagena! There must be 100 skyscrapers along the waterfront with more being built.

I would not want to be on my own in Cartagena, but it is a beautiful city.

If you would like to read it, a link to my review is in my sig below.

Thank you, Glorida F, for the recommendation and description of the tour. Your posting was useful to us. I believe that we are now leaning towards the Best of Cartagena & Fortress excursion. It seems that it provides an opportunity to see a variety of places in Cartagena and also includes a short walking tour of the old part of the city.

Thanks again.

Just off the 10 day RT Panama Canal cruise on the Coral Princess.

This tour is fast paced, lots of walking, and very hot while in the sun. That said it is a great tour. You see a lot of Cartagena and it is a wonderful city. Our guide was fantastic - very informative and had a great personality.

Street vendors? Yes there are many, many of them. Just walk by with a polite "no thank-you" and they will not bother you. I was so worried before we went having read posts about drugs & how insistent the vendors were. My husband & I were traveling with our two sons (23 & 19) and we had no problems at all. Just know that if you show interest in something the vendors are selling they will become more persistent. Remember - they are only trying to make a living and what better way - with tourists who have money to spend. Do not be afraid to get off the ship in this port - you will miss a very interesting port of call.

Cartagena de Indias is a major port city in Colombia and also one of the country's oldest settlements. The port is usually included in Southern Caribbean itineraries (leaving roundtrip from Florida USA) and often in Panama Canal transition itineraries . The city has population around 920,000 (metro around 1,3 million). Namesake is the Mediterranean Port of Cartagena in Spain .

Puerto de Cartagena (locode COCTG) has the capacity to serve all types of marine vessels, including large container ships , cargo carriers (dry, liquid, breakbulk), Ro-Ro ships, tankers and passenger ships (cruisers and ferries ). The Port handles annually ~1400 vessels, ~3 million TEU containers, ~7,2 million tons of cargo.

Columbia's principal port (and the country's largest by annual shipping volumes) is Buenaventura .

For season 2023-2024, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 190 cruise ship calls/booked berthings (including 12 maiden/first-time visits) with expected 470,000+ tourists (~320,000 passengers plus ~150,000 crew). The bookings were from 30 different cruise line brands , including CCL-Carnival, Princess, HAL-Holland America, AIDA, Silversea, RCI-Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, MSC (and Explora Journeys), NCL-Norwegian, TUI, Marella UK, P&O UK, DCL-Disney, Oceania, Windstar, RSSC-Regent Seven Seas, Crystal, Viking OCEAN. The Port's annual economic impact from cruise shipping (2023-2024 season) was estimated at USD 50+ million.

During the Spanish colonial period, the city played a key role in the expansion of the Spanish Empire (1492-1975) and was also a center of political and economic activity. In 1984, the city was listed as a UNESCO Site. Cartagena is one of South America's most impressive colonial cities featuring cobbled streets, well-preserved fortifications (including 7 shoreside forts) and stone-made city walls. Castillo San Felipe de Barajas (1639-built) was the biggest Spanish fort in the Americas. The historic downtown is marked by narrow streets, grand colonial buildings and arcaded plazas.

Best-known buildings include the Palace of the Inquisition, the Cathedral, the Gold Museum (all located around Plaza de Bolivar), several churches and monasteries (including San Agustin, Santo Domingo, San Francisco, Santisima Trinidad). Tourists can also explore the Islas del Rosario's surrounding coral reefs or take a mud bath close to El Totumo volcano.

In 2020, RCG-Royal Caribbean Group 's subsidiary company Pullmantur Cruises had ~50% market share of Colombia's ship cruising market. Pullmantur started operations here in 2014, and in 2019 Colombia was its 3rd-largest market (after Spain and Brazil) operated year-round with 1 liner ( Pullmantur Monarch ). The ship was homeported in Cartagena and Colon Panama for roundtrips to Southern Caribbean port destinations. Colombia is currently ranked South America's 3rd-largest market - after Brazil and Argentina.

  • May 5, 2024

Total Solar Eclipse

Princess Cruises is inviting guests to witness the next total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, while sailing onboard the Sky Princess.

The Sky Princess will depart Southampton on August 8, 2026, for a 14-day Mediterranean cruise, highlighted with total eclipse viewing while the ship is at sea, off the coast of Spain.

It’s truly a special opportunity.”

During the two minutes and 18 seconds of the total eclipse, passengers will gather on the top decks with Princess safety glasses for viewing. Travelers will also enjoy lectures from astronomy experts, themed treats and drinks, solar system trivia and more.

The Total Eclipse Sky Princess Voyage goes on sale May 23, 2024, with rates starting at $2,199 per person. Ports of call include Cherbourg, France; Bilbao, Spain; Malaga, Spain; Cartagena, Spain; Gibraltar; Lisbon, Portugal and La Coruña, Spain.

“Our recent solar eclipse cruises were completely sold out so interested guests should book this Sky Princess cruise as soon as it opens on May 23. It truly will be an experience to remember,” added Padgett.

Princess Cruises to Launch Voyages Out of This Caribbean Destination for the First Time in 10 Years

Starting October 2025, the cruise line will sail from San Juan, Puerto Rico on seven-day voyages on board the Grand Princess.

Princess Cruises will return to San Juan, Puerto Rico, next year for the first time in more than 10 years, sailing week-long voyages from the U.S. territory.

Starting October 2025, the cruise line will sail from the capital of Puerto Rico on seven-day voyages on board the Grand Princess . Princess will plan to sail these southern Caribbean voyages through March 2026, the company shared with Travel + Leisure.

The Grand Princess will sail two alternating itineraries, both roundtrip from San Juan. The first will include stops in Tortola, St. Kitts, Dominica, Grenada, and Barbados, while the second will include stops in St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Vincent, and Barbados. Each will include a day at sea.

“Our return to San Juan after more than a decade not only reconnects our guests with a port rich in history and charm, but further expands the variety of departure points across North America that our guests can sail from,” Terry Thornton, the chief commercial officer for Princess Cruises, said in a statement shared with T+L. “Puerto Rico remains one of the fastest-growing destinations in the Caribbean and continues to attract new airlift from source markets across the U.S. as well as markets in Europe and South America, which makes it a great fit for Princess. Plus, there are many outstanding options to choose from for a great pre- or post-cruise stay.”

While on board the 2,600-guest Grand Princess ship, passengers can enjoy a mini golf putting course, indulge in afternoon tea, relax in the adults-only The Sanctuary, and more. The Grand Princess is the oldest in the company’s fleet , but underwent a major renovation in 2019.

Cruises from San Juan will go on sale on May 16, according to the company.

While Princess is making plans to return to San Juan next year, the company was forced to delay another 2025 debut when it pushed back the delivery of its newest ship , the Star Princess , by about two months. That ship is now expected to sail in the fall of 2025.
