All 16 Princess Cruises Ships, From Newest to Oldest
Here’s everything you need to know about the Princess Cruises fleet.
Courtesy of Princess Cruises
Sailors of all ages love Princess Cruises for its quality, service, value, and serene style of cruising. What’s more, the 2023 T+L World’s Best Award-winning mega-ship line — which is also a WBA Hall of Fame Honoree — tends to steer clear of splashy entertainment (for example, you won’t find go-karts, water slides, or ziplines on board most ships) in favor of more refined activities. Discovery at SEA programming is a standout offering: In partnership with Discovery and Animal Planet, guests can partake in nature-centric onboard activities and shore excursions. Most Princess ships boast a majestic atrium modeled after an Italian piazza, and it’s here where you’ll find some of the best drinking, dining, and shopping venues on board.
According to travel advisor and cruise specialist Jennaca Boose of Marvelous Mouse Travels , Princess’ fleet of 15 ships — 16 if you count the upcoming Sun Princess , which will make its long-anticipated debut this year — is family-friendly, and each vessel is “equipped to entertain all ages;” however, some cater towards specific age demographics better than others. For example, she says, travelers sailing with younger children will especially love Royal Princess and Regal Princess , which “have even more to offer” beyond the kids club, such as “outdoor play areas with jungle gyms and a separate teen space with a hot tub.” Meanwhile, says Boose, cruisers craving an intimate onboard experience may consider sailing aboard Coral Princess or Island Princess , which are two of the line’s smaller ships.
Finally, it’s also worth noting that the line offers dozens, if not hundreds, of itineraries across the globe, including Alaska, Mexico, Japan, the Mediterranean, and many more. “Whether you’re looking for a quick getaway or an immersive cultural itinerary,” says Boose, “Princess has a ship for you.” Without further ado, keep scrolling for a breakdown of each ship in the Princess Cruises fleet to help you narrow down which vessels would be best for you.

Finally, for the best ocean views, book one of the Sky Suites.
Majestic Princess
Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Ship Capacity: 3,560 guests
This Royal-class ship was initially designed for cruises from Shanghai, which means passengers can expect Chinese-inspired decor along with the fantastic specialty restaurant, Harmony, which features mouthwatering Asian menu items like wok-fried lobster, spring rolls, and more. Meanwhile, don’t miss the dazzling casino and incredible SeaWalk, where panoramic ocean views await.
Regal Princess
Inaugural Year: 2014
This 2014 mega-ship definitely delivers in terms of onboard attractions. A few fan favorites include movies under the stars (best enjoyed with popcorn and candy in hand, of course), original productions, an outdoor musical fountain show, and Princess Live!, where passengers will find interactive culinary shows along with late-night comedy and game shows that can be viewed in-person or from the comfort of one’s stateroom. Last but not least, don’t forget to snap a selfie on the SeaWalk.
Royal Princess

Prepare to receive the royal treatment (pun intended) aboard the 3,560-passenger Royal Princess . The ship’s dazzling common spaces, including the grand atrium and the SeaWalk, are sure to impress design lovers, while the drinking and dining options, including the extravagant Chef’s Table Lumiere — available only on Royal-class ships — will delight culinary connoisseurs of all ages.
Ruby Princess
Inaugural Year: 2008

Ship Capacity: 3,080 guests
Entertainment options abound on the 19-deck Ruby Princess , from movies under the stars and basketball to golfing and (hopefully) winning big at the casino. While party-going cruisers can dance ‘til the wee hours of the night at Skywalkers, serenity-seeking travelers may choose to hit the sack early before waking up to enjoy the spa or The Sanctuary.
Emerald Princess
Inaugural Year: 2007
Last refurbished in 2019, Emerald Princess features something for families of all ages, including reimagined Camp Discovery youth and teen centers and the serene Sanctuary, a kid-free slice of paradise in the middle of the sea. Passengers can also perfect their swing at the putting course, enjoy poolside movie screenings, unwind at one of several swanky bars and lounges, including the Speakeasy Cigar Lounge, hit the spa, or dance the night away at the onboard club. In summary, it’s pretty much impossible to be bored on this ship.
Crown Princess
Inaugural Year: 2006
Despite its 3,000-plus passenger capacity , Crown Princess never feels super crowded thanks to abundant onboard amenities and activities. Highlights include three main dining rooms, a three-story atrium, and, of course, ample activities and programming, which run the gamut from basketball courts and pajama movie nights for kids to karaoke and an onboard nightclub.
Diamond Princess
Inaugural Year: 2004

There’s also the adults-only Sanctuary sun deck, Broadway-caliber entertainment, ample restaurants (including five main dining rooms), a nightclub, and so much more.
Caribbean Princess
Ship Capacity: 3,140 guests
This massive 18-deck ship was last refurbished in 2019 to bring it up to par with the line’s latest vessels. The European-inspired piazza , boasting street performers, eclectic boutiques, restaurants and bars, and a striking spiral staircase, is the beating heart of the ship. Plus, as part of the line’s partnership with Discovery, guests can enjoy nature-filled activities and lectures.
Sapphire Princess
Ship Capacity: 2,670 guests
Those craving a traditional cruising experience need not look further than the 20-year-old Sapphire Princess . With an onboard nightclub, five main dining rooms (plus many other bars and lounges, including a cigar lounge), this 2,670-passenger ship is among the line’s buzziest. After dancing the night away, adults can spend the day relaxing at The Sanctuary, while families will surely appreciate the dedicated spaces for kids, tweens, and teens.
Island Princess
Inaugural Year: 2003
Ship Class: Coral
Ship Capacity: 2,200 guests
Island Princess was purposefully built to sail through the Panama Canal. This 2,200-guest, 20-plus-year-old ship offers a more refined onboard experience compared to the line’s newer, flashier vessels. Sea days are well spent at the spa, in swimming pools, or sipping cocktails in the massive atriums; come nighttime, watch movies under the stars (a Princess staple) or catch live musical performances before hitting the sack — and getting ready to do it all again the following day.
Coral Princess
Ship Capacity: 2,000 guests
Coral Princess is Princess’ smallest ship; however, there is still plenty to see, do, and experience on board. Guests can make themselves right at home in the piazza-style grand atrium, where prime people-watching awaits. For some R&R, grown-ups can head to the tranquil, adults-only Sanctuary while the kids are at play at the children’s centers.
Grand Princess
Inaugural Year: 1998
Ship Capacity: 2,600 guests
Princess’ oldest ship underwent a major renovation back in 2019, adding fan-favorite restaurants like Alfredo's Pizzeria, Salty Dog Grill, and Coffee & Cones. What is the newest Princess cruise ship?
The newest Princess cruise ship is Discovery Princess. As noted above, it debuted in March 2022.
Measuring 145,000 gross tons, Discovery Princess is the biggest Princess cruise ship ever built and has more restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top pool space than many older Princess ships.
Discovery Princess is part of Princess Cruises' six-ship Royal class of vessels, which is comprised of bigger ships than the line's earlier classes of vessels. The Royal class began debuting in 2013 and also includes Enchanted Princess, Sky Princess, Majestic Princess, Regal Princess and Royal Princess.
For more details on Discovery Princess, including what venues are on board and what it's like to sail on the vessel, see TPG's first impressions of Discovery Princess after an early sailing.
What is the oldest Princess cruise ship?
The oldest Princess cruise ship is Grand Princess. Unveiled way back in 1998, it's the namesake vessel for the line's Grand class of vessels, which remain at the core of the Princess fleet.
There are seven Grand-class vessels in the Princess fleet in all, making it the biggest grouping of ships at the line. Unveiled between 1998 and 2008, the Grand-class vessels are smaller than the Royal-class vessels at around 107,000 to 116,000 tons in size. This smaller size allows them to operate a wider range of itineraries than the Royal-class ships, as the vessels can access some smaller ports that aren't as accessible to the bigger ships.

Still, the Grand-class vessels are big enough to offer a lot of onboard venues. The Grand-class ships carry between 2,600 to 3,100 passengers at double occupancy.
What new Princess cruise ships are coming?
Princess currently has two new cruise ships on order. The first to arrive will be Sun Princess in February 2024. As noted above, it's the first of all-new Sphere-class series of vessels for the line that, as of now, will be made up of two ships (Princess could order more Sun-class ships in coming years — we'll see).
The second ship in the Sphere-class series, to be called Star Princess, is due to begin sailing in 2025.
The Sphere-class vessels are being built at the Fincantieri shipyard near Monfalcone, Italy.
TPG recently got a sneak peek at the most notable new features under development for Sun Princess during a visit to the partly completed vessel at the Fincantieri shipyard. They include The Dome, a glass dome-covered pool area with tiers of seating facing the bow that will turn into a nighttime entertainment zone with a stage at night.
What is the newest Princess cruise ship available for booking?
Sun Princess is the newest Princess cruise ship you can book right now. While the vessel isn't yet in operation, its initial sailings scheduled for February 2024 already are on sale, as are future voyages through March 2025. The one other Princess ship on order, Star Princess, has yet to open for bookings.
What is the newest class of Princess cruise ships?
The Sphere class is the newest class of Princess ships. It'll be made up of at least two vessels, the first of which (Sun Princess) is due to debut in February 2024.
At 175,500 tons, Sun Princess will be about 21% bigger than the biggest ships currently in the Princess fleet — a significant jump in size for the line. And yet, while it's 21% bigger, it's designed to hold just 17% more passengers.
In other words, its space-to-passenger ratio will be greater, making the ship feel roomier — if only modestly.
Related: Everything to know about Princess cabins and suites
In addition to being significantly bigger than past Princess ships, Sun Princess will also be the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — a sign Princess hopes to draw more upmarket travelers.
In all, the vessel is designed to hold 4,300 passengers at double occupancy.
What's the difference between newer and older Princess ships?
Newer Princess ships generally are bigger than older Princess ships and thus have more and bigger onboard venues than the line's older vessels.
On the newest Princess vessels, the Royal-class vessels, for instance, you'll find the largest piazza-like central atriums in the Princess fleet surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants; multiple entertainment venues for live shows, comedy acts and more; and expansive pool decks with more space for sunning than you'll find on smaller Princess vessels.
You'll also find some only-on-the-Royal-class-ships extras, including, on some of the ships, a glass-floored "SeaWalk" that extends over the side of the vessel.
Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Princess ship
Princess' oldest cruise ships are significantly smaller than its newest ships and lack some of the above features. They have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold fewer people. While Royal-class ships can hold more than 4,500 passengers with every berth full, the line's oldest vessels (particularly the relatively small Island Princess and Coral Princess) often sail with just 2,000 or so passengers on board.
That makes them a good choice for someone who wants to try Princess Cruises but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The oldest ships in the Princess fleet thus appeal to a subset of Princess fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

In addition, because of their size, the oldest ships at Princess Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Discovery Princess.
Note that all Princess Cruises ships are renovated and upgraded on a regular schedule every few years, so even the oldest Princess vessels have newer carpeting, updated furniture, modern decor in cabins and other updates. In many cases, they also have had entire eateries and bars renovated over the years with concepts that first debuted on newer vessels.

Princess Cruises Ships by Size, Age and Class (2022)
Princess Cruises has an active fleet of fifteen cruise ships with a further two ships on order (due 2023 and 2025).
In this guide, we will cover all the different ships in the Princess Cruises fleet and how they compare to each other.
Introduction to Princess Cruises
Princess Cruises is an American cruise line which is part of the Carnival Corporation and sister to other brands such as Cunard Line , P&O Cruises and Holland America Line .
Its headquarters are based in Santa Clarita, California, however, some marketing activities are also carried out at Carnival House in Southampton, England.
The company itself was made famous by the television series, The Love Boat, however, it was founded in 1965 when Stanley McDonald chartered the original ship Princess Patricia to sail Mexican Riveria cruises when traditionally the ship would have been laid up for the winter.
Eventually, P&O Cruises acquired Princess in 1974, at that point the line had two ships – Island Princess and Pacific Princess .
Much later on, in 2003 when Carnival acquired P&O Princess Cruises (as it was then called) Carnival transferred operations of Princess Cruises over to America back from the UK.
Princess Cruises operate cruises worldwide – with many of their ships offering Alaskan itineraries and more recently several more of their ships now sailing from Southampton to Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean.

Princess Cruises Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)
What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.
GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.
How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?
You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.
Princess Cruises Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)
Are all of princess cruises ships new builds.
Yes. All of the Princess ships are built specifically for the line. However, two of the design classes (Grand-class and Royal-class) have been used across sister brand P&O Cruises .
These include:
- Ventura and Azura for P&O Cruises (Grand-class)
- Britannia for P&O Cruises (Royal-class)
Princess Cruises Ships by Class (from newest to oldest)
Final thoughts.
Princess Cruises is a family-friendly cruise line with a reputation for great service and beautiful looking ships. Out of all the Carnival brands, Princess generally is first with new technologies (such as the Sea Medallion – a small device you wear that allows you to enter your cabin, pay for services and locate your family anywhere on the ship).
Princess has proved very popular in their Alaskan itineraries and also cruises from Australia and New Zealand. Recently, they have been offering near year-round cruises from Southampton over multiple ships as the market for new cruisers hots up in Europe.

Which Princess Cruise Ships Have Medallion Class?
Princess Cruise Line recently announced that all Princess ships are now officially Medallion Class ships. This is excellent news as the app has been rolled out across the fleet to make checking in a booking a seamless process.
And as we are soon embarking on a Princess Sea-cation, I can assure you the app is easy to use and understand when you get your head around it; it allows you to book in and upload all of your details to the app. Thus enabling quicker embarkation onto the ship; that has to be better, right? I don’t know about you, but I want to get on the ship and not mess about.
What Is Medallion Class
Ocean Medallion is a small Medallion which is replacing the sea card ( If you don’t own a smartphone, you can use the Medallion, which comes with a lanyard in precisely the same way as the sea card) This guide tells you a little more about the Ocean Medallion and how it works.
What Are The Newest Princess Cruise Ship?
The Discovery Princess was launched in 2022, and Enchanted Princess in 2021. The ships are stunning with features such as a fresh and modern feel, deep-tank pools linked by sunken, communal seating adjacent to dancing fountains and a top-deck bar. The infinity-style wake view pools and bar offer spectacular horizon views at the ship’s aft end.
Which Cruise Ships Are Princess Launching next?
The next Princess Cruise Ship to launch is the Sun Princess in 2024, the first in the new Sphere class—followed by Star Princess in 2025 to join the sister ship Sun Princes.
What Is The Difference Between The New And Old Princess Cruise Ships?
In terms of quality none what so ever, Princess has worked hard to keep the ships up to date, as reflected in the refurbishment programme; the newer ships are bigger; however, more space comes with more passenger numbers.
Saying this, we have sailed on older Princess ships and one thing you can expect as standard is excellent food, outstanding quality and consistency across the fleet.
Princess Cruise Ships By Age, Size, Weight, Passengers, Crew And Refurbishments, Newest To Oldest 2022

Coral Princes is the smallest Princess Cruise Ship, which was last renovated in 2003. Being 91,627 tons, it is almost half the weight of her newest sisters in the fleet. Coral Princess holds 2000 passengers, making it a much more intimate ship with a crew of 895, which has a crew ratio of 2.2.

Princess Cruises ships from newest to oldest — a complete list
What is the newest Princess Cruises ship? If you’re in the market for a Princess cruise, it’s something worth knowing.
The newest Princess cruise ship is typically also the Princess ship with the most up-to-date restaurants, bars, attractions and cabins. It’s the one to choose if you want the very latest and greatest in a vessel for your Princess cruise vacation.
As of this year, the newest Princess cruise ship is Discovery Princess. It sailed on its maiden voyage in March 2022.
That said, Discovery Princess soon will be supplanted as the newest Princess Cruises vessel by Sun Princess — the first of a new class of vessels for the line. Sun Princess begins sailing in February 2024.
For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .
Other relatively new Princess ships include Enchanted Princess, Sky Princess and Majestic Princess. All began sailing in the last six years.
In all, Princess Cruises operates 15 vessels. On average, the line comes out with one new ship every two years or so, and it typically keeps vessels in its fleet for around 20 to 30 years before retiring them. The oldest Princess Cruises ship, Grand Princess, is 25 years old.
In general, Princess Cruises’ newest ships are bigger and more venue-packed than its older ships. If you crave a lot of options for restaurants, bars and pool areas for your Princess cruise vacation, you’ll want to stick to vessels built in the last 10 or so years.

Discovery Princess is part of Princess Cruises’ six-ship Royal class of vessels, which is comprised of bigger ships than the line’s earlier classes of vessels. The Royal class began debuting in 2013 and also includes Enchanted Princess, Sky Princess, Majestic Princess, Regal Princess and Royal Princess.
For more details on Discovery Princess, including what venues are on board and what it’s like to sail on the vessel, see TPG’s first impressions of Discovery Princess after an early sailing.
What is the oldest Princess cruise ship?
The oldest Princess cruise ship is Grand Princess. Unveiled way back in 1998, it’s the namesake vessel for the line’s Grand class of vessels, which remain at the core of the Princess fleet.
There are seven Grand-class vessels in the Princess fleet in all, making it the biggest grouping of ships at the line. Unveiled between 1998 and 2008, the Grand-class vessels are smaller than the Royal-class vessels at around 107,000 to 116,000 tons in size. This smaller size allows them to operate a wider range of itineraries than the Royal-class ships, as the vessels can access some smaller ports that aren’t as accessible to the bigger ships.
Related: The ultimate guide to Princess Cruises
Still, the Grand-class vessels are big enough to offer a lot of onboard venues. The Grand-class ships carry between 2,600 to 3,100 passengers at double occupancy.
What new Princess cruise ships are coming?
Princess currently has two new cruise ships on order. The first to arrive will be Sun Princess in February 2024. As noted above, it’s the first of all-new Sphere-class series of vessels for the line that, as of now, will be made up of two ships (Princess could order more Sun-class ships in coming years — we’ll see).
While the vessel isn’t yet in operation, its initial sailings scheduled for February 2024 already are on sale, as are future voyages through March 2025. The one other Princess ship on order, Star Princess, has yet to open for bookings.
What is the newest class of Princess cruise ships?
The Sphere class is the newest class of Princess ships. It’ll be made up of at least two vessels, the first of which (Sun Princess) is due to debut in February 2024.
At 175,500 tons, Sun Princess will be about 21% bigger than the biggest ships currently in the Princess fleet — a significant jump in size for the line. And yet, while it’s 21% bigger, it’s designed to hold just 17% more passengers.
What’s the difference between newer and older Princess ships?
Newer Princess ships generally are bigger than older Princess ships and thus have more and bigger onboard venues than the line’s older vessels.
On the newest Princess vessels, the Royal-class vessels, for instance, you’ll find the largest piazza-like central atriums in the Princess fleet surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants; multiple entertainment venues for live shows, comedy acts and more; and expansive pool decks with more space for sunning than you’ll find on smaller Princess vessels.
You’ll also find some only-on-the-Royal-class-ships extras, including, on some of the ships, a glass-floored “SeaWalk” that extends over the side of the vessel.
Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Princess ship
Princess’ oldest cruise ships are significantly smaller than its newest ships and lack some of the above features. They have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold fewer people. While Royal-class ships can hold more than 4,500 passengers with every berth full, the line’s oldest vessels (particularly the relatively small Island Princess and Coral Princess) often sail with just 2,000 or so passengers on board.
That makes them a good choice for someone who wants to try Princess Cruises but isn’t eager to travel with huge crowds. The oldest ships in the Princess fleet thus appeal to a subset of Princess fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don’t mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

In addition, because of their size, the oldest ships at Princess Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren’t as easy for big ships to visit.

Princess Cruises Ships by Age: Newest to Oldest
Starting its journey in 1965, Princess Cruises has grown to become a major player in the cruise industry with a fleet of 15 ships. Over the years, they’ve introduced vessels that cater to different tastes and preferences. The newer ships offer state-of-the-art amenities, reflecting the latest in cruise innovations. These are ideal if you want all the comfort and the latest tech. On the other hand, ships like the Grand Princess, sailing for over two decades, carry with them a rich history and tales of countless voyages.
The age of a ship can dictate its onboard features, dining venues, and even the attractions you’ll see. That’s why it’s important to consider the age of your ship for your next cruise vacation. In this guide, we rank Princess ships by age, helping you understand the evolution of their fleet and what each ship uniquely brings to the table.
Table of Contents
Princess Cruises Ships by Age
Princess Cruises typically introduces a new ship every two to three years. On average, each vessel serves for about 20 to 30 years before it’s retired. Here’s a table that ranks the Princess Cruise ships by age from from newest to oldest:
* Upcoming Launch
Terms used in the table:
- Passenger Capacity at Double Occupancy: This refers to the number of passengers a ship can accommodate when two people share each cabin. The actual maximum capacity can be higher when more than two people occupy cabins designed for additional guests.
- Gross Tonnage: This measures a ship’s overall internal volume. One gross ton equals 100 cubic feet. It reflects the ship’s size, including areas like cabins, dining, entertainment, machinery, and storage.
Newest Princess Cruises Ship
The Sun Princess is the latest addition to the Princess Cruises fleet, scheduled to set sail in February 2024. As the inaugural ship of the Sphere-class, it’s designed to accommodate over 4,300 passengers, making it one of the larger vessels in their lineup.
The ship has a majority of cabins with balconies, which means you’ll have beautiful views of the seas. For dining, the Signature Collection introduces the Signature Restaurant, a premium dining venue offering gourmet dishes crafted by renowned chefs, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. When it comes to entertainment, the Park19 offers a range of activities, including the Sea Breeze, the first-ever roll-glider at sea. Additionally, the ship is powered by liquefied natural gas, which is a cleaner fuel alternative. We’re happy to see that the cruise line is taking steps towards a greener future.
Another Upcoming Princess Cruises Ship:
The Star Princess is another upcoming ship set to join the Princess Cruises fleet in 2025. This ship, the third to carry the “Star Princess” name, can hold over 4,300 passengers. With a tonnage of 175,500 and a length of 1,133 feet, the Star Princess is among the larger ships in the Princess lineup.
With over 1,500 balconies, you’ll likely have a sea view right from your room. It’s the sister ship to the Sun Princess, and it also features the Signature Restaurant. For fun, you can head to The Piazza, The Dome, or the Princess Arena. Plus, it will also run on Liquefied Natural Gas.
Newest Princess Ship That’s Currently Sailing
The “Discovery Princess” is currently the newest ship from Princess Cruises that’s sailing the seas. While it was initially planned to launch in November 2021, its maiden voyage took place on March 27, 2022, departing from Los Angeles.
It’s designed to accommodate 3,660 passengers. Like other Princess ships, it’s also equipped with the signature MedallionClass technology. This tech offers cruisers touchless experiences, such as contactless payments, and even food and beverage delivery anywhere on the ship.
Oldest Princess Cruises Ship
The Grand Princess is the oldest Princess Cruises ship, and it has been sailing with Princess Cruises since 1998. It can accommodate 2,600 passengers. In March 2019, the ship went through a renovation, adding new dining spots on the top deck like Alfredo’s Pizzeria and Salty Dog Grill. The Princess Theater also got an upgrade for a better audio experience.
Onboard, you have a variety of dining choices, from the main dining room to specialty places and quick bites. In the evenings, there are several lounges to relax and have a drink. The Grand Princess offers the Discovery at SEA program, which gives educational experiences to passengers. With a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio, the service on the Grand Princess is often described as attentive and friendly. The ship sails to various destinations, including Alaska, Hawaii, Australia, the California coast, and the South Pacific.
What is the Biggest Princess Cruises Ship?
The biggest Princess ship currently sailing is the Discovery Princess. But this title will soon be taken by the Sun Princess, set to launch in 2024, becoming the largest ship in the fleet. This upcoming Sphere class vessel is designed to accommodate over 4,300 passengers.
What is the Smallest Princess Cruises Ship?
The Coral Princess is the smallest and one of the best ships in the Princess Cruises fleet . With a passenger capacity of around 2,000 guests, it offers a more intimate cruising experience compared to the larger vessels.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Scott Zalewski (@scottzed)
Despite its smaller size, Coral Princess doesn’t skimp on amenities and features. It offers multiple dining options, entertainment venues, and recreational activities. The ship’s design emphasizes spacious decks and balcony staterooms, ensuring guests have ample space to relax and enjoy the views.

Difference Between Old and New Princess Ships
It’s important to understand that newer ships aren’t necessarily better. It’s all a matter of personal preference, but here are some key differences:
Size and Structure
The newer Princess Cruises ships, especially those from the Sphere-class, are generally larger in terms of physical dimensions. This increased size allows for more expansive public areas, larger entertainment venues, and more spacious deck areas. In contrast, the older ships in the fleet, while smaller, often provide a more intimate setting, with cozier lounges and public spaces.
Passenger Capacity
With the increase in physical size, the newer ships naturally accommodate a larger number of passengers. For instance, the upcoming Sun Princess is designed to house over 4,300 guests. On the other hand, older vessels like the Coral Princess cater to a smaller crowd, with a capacity of around 2,000 guests. This difference in capacity can influence the overall ambiance onboard, with larger ships feeling more bustling and vibrant, while smaller ships offer a more relaxed and intimate atmosphere.
Decor and Ambiance
The older Princess ships often showcase a traditional American-style decor, characterized by dark woods, classic artworks, and warm-toned fabrics. It’s reminiscent of the classic era of cruising. In contrast, the newer ships lean towards a contemporary design, featuring neutral color palettes, modern art installations, and minimalist furnishings.
Dining and Entertainment
Across the Princess fleet, the dining and entertainment options remain relatively consistent in terms of quality. However, while older ships maintain classic dining rooms and entertainment venues that have been favorites for years, newer ships might introduce a few modern twists or specialty dining venues. It’s worth noting that, unlike some other cruise lines, Princess Cruises doesn’t drastically change its onboard offerings based on the ship’s age.
Technology and Sustainability
One area where newer ships often have an edge is in the realm of technology and sustainability. For example, ships like the Sun Princess are equipped with advanced environmental technologies, such as being powered by liquefied natural gas. While older ships might not have been built with these features, many receive upgrades during refurbishments to incorporate more sustainable practices and modern guest conveniences.
Whether you’re drawn to the modern amenities of the newer vessels or the classic charm of the older ones, each Princess ship promises a memorable experience. It’s essential to consider factors like size, decor, and onboard facilities when choosing your next cruise. Ultimately, regardless of the ship’s age, Princess Cruises consistently delivers quality on the high seas.

Princess Cruises' Star Princess ship delayed, 9 sailings canceled
Travelers will have to wait longer than planned to sail on Princess Cruises’ upcoming ship.
The delivery of Star Princess, which was set to debut next summer, will be pushed back by about two months. The cruise line said the delay was a “mutual” decision with shipbuilder Fincantieri.
“Following a comprehensive review of the remaining construction milestones, both parties have elected to adjust the ship's delivery date from July 29, 2025 to September 26, 2025, which will result in the cancellation of the nine inaugural sailings,” Princess said in a news release .
Guests whose cruises are impacted will be able to rebook on any Princess ship and, depending on which sailing they pick, receive future cruise and onboard credits. They will also be able to opt for a full refund of their fare instead.
“Despite our collective dedication and relentless pursuit to deliver the ship in late July, it has become evident that additional time is required to ensure the Star Princess is delivered to the highest standards expected by our guests,” Princess Cruises President John Padgett said in the release.
Your cruise was canceled: Now what?
The ship’s new inaugural itineraries will include 11 and seven-day Mediterranean cruises on Oct. 4 and 15, 2025, respectively. Those will be followed by a two-week transatlantic voyage to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Oct. 22, 2025.
Those sailings will be available to book on April 30.
Star Princess will be the second in the line’s Sphere Class. Sister ship Sun Princess was also delayed ahead of its launch earlier this year, with Princess citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard.

Princess Cruises is taking a page out of the ultra-luxury cruise industry with new all-inclusive, $3,000 cabins
- Princess Cruises says its new Sun Princess and upcoming Star Princess will have all-inclusive cabins.
- Guests who've booked the new Sanctuary Collection category would get an inclusive package and private lounge.
- It's a move that could appeal to ultra-luxury cruisers .
If you want to go on an all-inclusive vacation at sea, you no longer need to book an ultra-luxury, ultra-expensive cruise line .
Just sail on Princess Cruises' new ship instead.
In October, Princess says its two-month-old Sun Princess will debut in the US with the company's first-ever Sanctuary Collection, an adult-only lounge exclusive to guests who've booked one of the collection's high-end cabins. These luxurious accommodations comprise 10% of the ship's 2,157 staterooms, including all its suites.
But the Sanctuary's biggest perk arguably isn't the lounge's private pool and restaurant — it's the all-inclusiveness , a rarity among mass-market cruise lines.
It's the Carnival Corp. brand's latest appeal to ultra-luxury cruisers
Mass-market cruise lines like Princess, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian typically follow the " budget airline " strategy: charge a cheap base fare and offer plenty of irresistible up-charged amenities (like specialty restaurants, as is the case of Sun Princess).
It's a stark contrast to the high-end cruise industry, where all-inclusivity is often considered the standard.
For example, luxury cruise line Explora Journey's fare includes alcoholic beverages, WiFi, and access to the spa — amenities that would typically cost extra on ships like Sun Princess. On Regent Seven Seas , all this, plus excursions, pre-cruise hotels, and roundtrip flights are also included in the cost to sail.
Over the last few years, Princess has begun following in these high-end cruise lines' foosteps.
In 2022, it launched Princess Premier, an optional inclusive package covering amenities like WiFi, drinks, some upcharged restaurants, and workout classes. It's the same package Sanctuary Collection guests would get, along with the private restaurant and adult-only lounge with cabanas, a pool, and private events.
The exclusive lounge concept is nothing new. Royal Caribbean's two largest cruise liners have a "neighborhood" exclusive to suite guests. The same applies to Norwegian, Celebrity, and MSC Cruises' vessels.
However, while these competing retreats offer perks like drink packages, WiFi, or private restaurants, none are as "inclusive" as Princess'.
In 2024, Sun Princess' Sanctuary cabins start at more than $3,000 per person for a weeklong Caribbean cruise in mid-December. To compare, the cheapest interior cabin for the same itinerary starts shy of $700 per person.
The cruise line says its next ship, Star Princess, which will debut in late September 2025, will also carry the Sanctuary Collection.
Following in the footsteps of high-end, all-inclusive cruise lines could be a wise decision for Princess. These luxury vacations at sea have become increasingly popular as travelers continue to spend big on their trips.
Like Princess, expedition cruise company HX recently shifted to an all-inclusive model as well.
Back on dry land, hotel giants like Hyatt and Marriott have also seen a boom in these "everything free" resorts .
Apparently, every vacationer — whether on water or solid ground — just wants one thing: stress-free poolside lounging with bottomless drinks.
