Adventure and Action Punta Cana Excursions

Some of my favorite Punta Cana excursions are in this section. They’re a great way to break the lazy beach days by adding some adrenaline-infused activities to your vacation.

You don’t need to be a fitness maniac to join these tours. However, your physical level should allow you to trek for half an hour in the sweaty tropical jungle and climb a flight of stairs for most of these Punta Cana activities.

Are you ready to get a little dusty? Then, let’s explore the best adventure and action Punta Cana tours !

1. Zip Lining over the Jungle

Zip Line over the Jungle

Wanna see the jungle like Tarzan?

The zip-lining Punta Cana excursions allow you to fly over the treetops of the Dominican jungle. The best place to soar above Punta Cana’s lush tropical forests is the island’s first zip-lining course.

The expert canopy guides will not only ensure your safety. They’ll also provide fascinating insights into the surrounding jungle as you navigate from one platform to the next.

The longest cable extends 800 m / 2,600 ft. above a river, giving you 50 seconds of pure thrill.

The whole course features 16 platforms and 12 zip lines, including the two longest lines in the Caribbean.

Raise your adrenaline levels and enjoy the incredible views of the Cordillera Septentrional mountain range from platforms built within centenary trees. All while securely clipped to the lines.

🎒 What to Bring : Mosquito repellent to keep those nasty bugs away.

📍 How to Book : Join the tour of the awesome 12 zip-line cables course via this link . Pick-up service from your hotel is included.

2. Riding a Buggy

Buggy Tours Are Some Of The Best Things To Do In Punta Cana

Feel the speed of the open buggies or quads , go off the main street and onto the dirt roads through Dominican villages, plantations, and farms.

Reach your destination on a secluded beach, take a dip into the water, and then head back to your hotel to wash off the dust and relax your bones.

✔️ Tip : After a break, don’t try to sit on your seat before cooling it with a splash of water. The dark seats attract the sun and heat up quickly.

🎒 What to Bring : A bandana or a scarf to protect your face from the sand and dust, a pair of (sun)glasses to protect your eyes, and plenty of water.

📍 How to Book : Use this link to book the best buggy tour in Punta Cana .

3. Parasailing over Punta Cana

Parasailing in Punta Cana

Elevate your vacation with a heart-pumping parasailing experience.

You’ll reach almost 60 m / 200 ft. and enjoy a staggering view of Punta Cana’s coastline. Feel the breeze as you look out to the crystal waters and pristine beaches of the Dominican Republic.

✔️ Tip : Try to relax your body into the harness to fully enjoy the flight. Secure your sunglasses and anything that might fall out of your pockets.

🎒 What to Bring : Wear comfortable clothes.

📍 How to Book : Use this link to book your parasailing flight .

4. Learning to Kite-Surf

Opposed to other surf types, you don’t need strong winds or big waves to ride a kite surf.

According to instructors, most people need about 20 hours of training to learn to kite surf.

You’ll start with a smaller kite at the beach and move to a larger one once you’ve learned how to control it. Then, go into the water and feel the waves under your board and the power of the wind in your kite.

When you’re ready, make a few jumps in the air, and don’t forget to ask someone to record it for you.

🎒 What to Bring : Plenty of sun protection to avoid a nasty sunburn.

📍 How to Book : You can book lessons or rent kitesurfing gear at the KBS School .

5. Learning to Scuba Dive

Underwater

A lot of resorts offer courses for scuba diving certificates. You’ll start your practice at the resort’s swimming pool and then go out into the open waters.

Don’t neglect the rules and instructions, as diving can be detrimental to your health when done wrong.

And if you already have a certificate, go directly for a fun scuba dive in Punta Cana !

🎒 What to Bring : You’ll be provided with the gear, so you’ll only need your beach essentials.

📍 How to Book : Check if your hotel offers scuba diving lessons. And if you already have your certificate, join this ocean adventure .

Multiday Trips from Punta Cana

A couple of destinations in the Dominican Republic, such as the amazing Samaná, call for a multiday trip from Punta Cana .

You can either join an organized tour or take care of the logistics yourself. I’ve done both, and I’ve enjoyed the self-paced option way more.

Let’s see what multiday Punta Cana excursions are available.

7. Taking a Road Trip

Road Tripping Dominican Republic

If you’ve read this post carefully now, you might already have a plan for what you want to visit and explore.

So should you rent a car and just do it?

Hell, yeah!

There are no Punta Cana excursions that will fit everything you want to see and do on your visit to the tropical paradise.

Don’t limit yourself to just the things to do in Punta Cana. Venture away from the crowds and create your own adventure. My best suggestion is to visit Samana Peninsula at your own pace.

🎒 What to Bring : Navigation, cash, and a tank full of gas. Some Dominican roads are in poor condition, so my advice is to rent an SUV with full coverage.

📍 How to Book : The best way to explore any destination on a road trip is by renting your own wheels. Compare the best deals from Discover Cars .

Beach and Sea Tours in Punta Cana

Macao Beach - Dominican Republic

The Punta Cana beaches are the top reason you came to the Dominican Republic, right?

So, leave your resort and visit more than just the sand stretch in front of your hotel! These beach and sea Punta Cana excursions are worth leaving your comfy sunbed.

Let me prove that to you in this section.

8. Visiting Saona Island

Sailing to Saona Island

Embark on a catamaran adventure to Saona Island. This is the Dominican Republic’s best-selling tour. When you arrive at the idyllic Saona Island with its palm-lined, white-sand beaches and mesmerizing turquoise waters, you’ll quickly understand why.

Spend the day chilling on the lounge chairs, splashing in the natural swimming pool, or sunbathing on the pristine beach. Enjoy the delicious local cuisine and unlimited drinks from the bar before heading back.

🎒 What to Bring : Pack your beach essentials and don’t forget to apply sunscreen.

📍 How to Book : Catamaran tour to Saona Island .

9. Sailing to Isla Catalina

Sailing to Catalina Island

Embark on a full-day snorkeling adventure to Catalina Island. Explore the vibrant underwater world with a Padi-certified dive team. Snorkel at The Wall , a mesmerizing site suitable for both beginners and seasoned snorkelers.

Encounter vibrant sea creatures like corals, octopuses, and lionfish. After snorkeling, head to Catalina Island’s private beach for a feast. Try the catch of the day and lounge on the beach with a drink from the open bar.

On the way back, enjoy the stunning sunset.

✔️ Tip : Apply sunscreen before diving into the turquoise waters to avoid sunburns.

🎒 What to Bring : Don’t forget essentials like sun protection and a towel. Bring a waterproof camera to capture the spectacular underwater world.

📍 How to Book : Book your Catalina snorkeling tour here .

10. Beach Hopping near Punta Cana

Secluded Beach - Playa Limon

Punta Cana and Bavaro offer two of the most amazing, long-stretched Dominican Republic beaches . However, they are quite touristy and crowded in the peak season.

So, my best tip for your beach vacation is to rent a car and explore the coastline north of Punta Cana. You’ll discover several breathtaking, secluded Dominican beaches that feel surreal to explore.

Arm yourself with enough adventure spirit, pack plenty of water and snacks, and don’t forget your beach essentials! Keep in mind that not all beaches you’ll encounter will have a lifeguard or any facilities.

🎒 What to Bring : Sun protection, water, and snacks are a must for a beach-hopping day.

📍 How to Book : The best way to explore as many awesome Dominican beaches as possible is by renting your own wheels. Compare the best deals from Discover Cars .

11. Offshore Snorkelling in the Caribbean Sea

The coral reefs around Hispaniola Island are spectacular. Hop on a boat that will take you to one of the amazing underwater spots.

Watch, but do not touch, the colorful corals and fishes.

✔️ Tip : Be careful when choosing your tour. Some of these Punta Cana excursions consist of more drinking and partying than snorkeling.

🎒 What to Bring : Pack plenty of sun protection and your beach essentials. The best way to prevent a nasty sunburn is to wear a swim T-shirt and a bandana.

📍 How to Book : I recommend this awesome private catamaran cruise if you’re traveling in a group.

12. Taking a Boat Tour

Wondering what to do in Punta Cana? Take a Boat Tour - Snorkelling and Party

In Punta Cana, you’ll find boat tours for every taste.

You can party, drink, and meet other vacationers. You can watch the coral reef from the safety of your boat through a glass bottom. You can go fishing. Or even sailing.

Whatever your perfect day at sea looks like, I’m sure you’ll find a boat tour to make it happen :-)

🎒 What to Bring : Sun protection is a muse but also bring a long-sleeved shirt or a hoodie. The wind at sea may bring you chills even in the tropical heat.

📍 How to Book : My recommended boat tour includes swimming with sharks and stingrays! You can book it here .

13. Doing Some Sports

Kite

A lot of hotels and resorts offer a variety of sports at their beaches for free or for a small fee.

These might include bodyboarding, beach volleyball, kayaking, football, yoga, or exercising.

You can also do exercises on your own, take a long beach walk, or jog at the beach at sunrise.

And in the evenings, don’t miss the chance to learn some Bachata and Merengue moves, so you can impress your friends back home the next time you go dancing.

The Dominican Republic is also known for its perfect golf courses. If that’s your sport, you’ll surely find a perfect spot to practice your shots around Punta Cana.

🎒 What to Bring : Whatever sport you decide to do, make sure to put on enough sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

📍 How to Book : Ask at your hotel’s reception for the available options or wander the beach looking for local vendors.

Breathtaking Nature Excursions near Punta Cana

Nature Excursions Punta Cana

Deep caves with incredible limestone formations, wildlife-rich lagoons, and mesmerizing views over the coast are just a stone-throw away from Punta Cana.

If exploring on your own, these Punta Cana excursions in nature might take a little bit of planning and research, but the effort is well worth it. You’ll have the advantage of admiring nature’s beauty without other tourists.

14. Watching the Wildlife at the Lagoons

Visit the mangroves at Laguna Limón or Laguna Redonda to watch the birds in their habitat. Both lagoons are protected reserves.

You can hire a boat or rent a kayak on the spot. Explore the mangroves slowly to avoid disturbing the wildlife.

Local guides will give you all the information you need about the rural fishing communities, the lagoons, and the surrounding flora and fauna. They’ll also help you spot tropical birds, like herons and egrets, to make this a unique experience.

🎒 What to Bring : Pack a mosquito repellent to keep the feisty bugs off your skin. Use sun protection and stay hydrated.

📍 How to Book : Arrange your transportation by hiring a taxi or renting a car . Book a tour of the lagoons when you get there.

15. Viewing the World from above at Montaña Redonda

Montana Redonda - Hiking in Punta Cana

Did you know that you can go hiking in Punta Cana? Well, not exactly  in but just a few kilometres away.

If you’ve rented an SUV , you can drive right to the top of the 600 m / 1,969 ft. high Montaña Redonda . If not, you’ll have to climb all the way up. The ascend is not an easy one, as the road is very steep.

However, the 360° view from the top is extremely rewarding. On one side you’ll see Laguna Redonda and on the other – Laguna Limón and Playa Limón in the distance.

🎒 What to Bring : You’ll find a small picnic area at the top, so make sure to bring some provisions for a picnic.

📍 How to Book : You can enjoy the best panorama of the Punta Cana coastline by joining this tour .

16. Exploring Limestone Caves

Los Tres Ojos Cave Dominican Republic

The limestone caves Cueva de las Maravillas and Los Tres Ojos are both close to Punta Cana and Bavaro.

In Cueva de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders), you’ll see around 500 Taino wall paintings and engravings in black and red. The highlight of the cave is the Water Mirror Gallery, where the waters of the artificial lake reflect the beautiful ceiling of the cave.

The other cave close to Punta Cana, Los Tres Ojos , is an open-air cave formation. As the name suggests, it consists of three lakes, called eyes.

An underground river supplies water to the lakes. Stalactites and stalagmites surround them. Their depth remains unexplored.

✔️ Tip : Swimming in the lakes is not allowed.

🎒 What to Bring : Sturdy shoes with good grip will come in handy.

📍 How to Book : Some tours to Santo Domingo offer a stop at one of the caves. But if you want to visit them independently, I suggest you rent a car .

17. Getting Wet at the Waterfalls

Punta Cana Waterfalls - Salto De Socoa

There are no Punta Cana waterfalls directly located in the tourist area.

The nearest waterfalls from Punta Cana are around 2:30 h drive away. Still, if you decide to visit Salto De Socoa or Salto La Jalda , you’ll be rewarded with a magnificent view and a refreshing dip in the waters.

🎒 What to Bring : You’ll need water shoes and mosquito repellent for this tour.

📍 How to Book : The best way to explore these waterfalls is on your own. You can do so by renting a car .

Exploring Dominican Everyday Life in Punta Cana

One of my favorite activities when traveling is observing the everyday life of the locals. Unfortunately, not many Punta Cana excursions offer an authentic glimpse into Dominican life.

Organized tours from Punta Cana usually include a visit to Santo Domingo, La Romana, or a short stop at a plantation. But if you want to experience these places deeper, you better don’t join a group.

Instead, hire a taxi or rent a car, talk to locals on the street, sit at a cafe, and observe the routine of the Dominicans.

Below, you’ll find my recommended authentic experiences near Punta Cana.

18. Roaming the Vibrant Capital Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo Dominican Republic

Walk the cobblestoned streets of Zona Colonial , the old town. Visit a museum or two, and enjoy medieval and Renaissance art.

Admire the 16th-century buildings and the city’s architectural gem – the cathedral Santa María la Menor. One of my favorite facts about the Dominican Republic is that it was the first built in the New World.

Discover the Alcázar de Colón, the former residence of Christopher Columbus’ son. Don’t miss the captivating exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art, showcasing contemporary Dominican art, and providing a glimpse into the city’s cultural heritage.

🎒 What to Bring : Wear sturdy, comfy shoes as you’ll be walking on cobbled streets a lot.

📍 How to Book : The best way to explore Santo Domingo is by joining this awesome tour from Punta Cana .

19. Visiting the Laid Back Higuey

Higuey was founded in the 16 th century. The Cathedral Shrine of Our Lady of Altagracia dominates the city’s landscape and can be seen from afar.

Experience the vibrant local culture by exploring the bustling market. Colors, aromas, and lively exchanges will show you the everyday life of Higuey.

Don’t forget to visit the Museo de La Altagracia to dive into the city’s cultural heritage and artistic legacy. Wrap up your day in Higuey with a stroll through its charming streets, and observe colonial-era architecture and vibrant local life.

20. Exploring the Diverse Hato Mayor

Hato Mayor

Hato Mayor del Rey (King’s Great Herd) is a rural city, founded in 1520.

The road to the city will take you through small villages, plantations, and farmland. Watch everyday life as you pass by simple and colorful houses with the laundry hanging directly on the house fence.

Once you reach Hato Mayor, find the beautiful city center and mingle with the locals in the gorgeous park.

21. Visiting the Surprising La Romana

Immerse yourself in the unexpected charm of La Romana, the heart of the sugar industry.

Wander through the downtown area, where the striking Art Deco tower of the town hall stands tall. Just a short stroll away, encounter El Obelisco, a captivating miniature reproduction of the Washington Monument. Vibrant murals depicting the rich tapestry of Taino culture and contemporary Dominican themes adorn its sides.

Continue exploring, and you’ll uncover La Romana’s unique blend of history, art, and culture at every corner.

22. Driving Through Picturesque Dominican Villages

Village Life - Laundry

Start the day early in the morning in a rental or a taxi and try to visit as many Dominican villages as possible. Take the highway, and every now and then exit it to follow the bumpy roads through the countryside.

Most buildings you’ll see are colorful simple sheds with laundry hanging in front of the door. Small yards with several plants and trees, and the friendly faces of the Dominicans round the picture.

Try to order lunch in Spanish, as outside the resorts and tourist areas most people don’t speak English. Sit and enjoy the simple but delectable food while watching the everyday activities of the Dominicans.

Note that none of the organized tours I’ve seen include this kind of experience. However, you can easily build your own Punta Cana itinerary .

🎒 What to Bring : Take some cash and fill up your tank. Pack enough water and some snacks. Bring your beach essentials if you decide to visit a beach after seeing the countryside.

📍 How to Book : Renting a car from Discover Cars is the best way to explore the vibrant Dominican villages.

23. Visiting Plantations in the Countryside

A visit to the countryside to see the plantations is one of the coolest Punta Cana excursions to make.

The tour will take you to coffee, cacao, and sugar cane plantations. Taste sugar cane, fresh fruits, mamajuana, and try handmade cigars. Learn about the importance of these plantations for Dominicans.

Afterward, you’ll meet a local farmer’s family, see their home, learn about their work, and try typical dishes. Finally, you’ll pass by a rural school, greet kids, and learn about the Dominican educational system.

📍 How to Book : You can book this immersive tour and explore plantations, farms, and country life .

24. Enjoying the Nightlife of Punta Cana

Punta Cana is packed with nightclubs and bars.

  • Learn to dance Merengue and Bachata or simply watch the Dominicans do it.
  • Go to a show or visit the one-of-a-kind  nightclub in a cave – Imagine Punta Cana .
  • Join a bonfire beach party with live music.
  • Enjoy the Caribbean Pride. The hottest and most luxurious pride celebration in the Caribbean takes place in September. During the rest of the year, you can check what other colorful events you can join in this comprehensive gay Punta Cana travel guide .

25. Shopping for Local Goods

Cigars Factory

You can bring home several great souvenirs from Punta Cana. Here are some ideas.

  • Cigars : even if you’re a non-smoker like me, puffing a flavored cigar is a great experience.
  • Rum : the best brands, according to locals, are Ron Barceló and Brugal. Ask for the extra añejo (aged). You’ll thank me ;-)
  • Coffee : quality and price ranges vary. I was happy with the supermarket coffee, but I’m sure the super-expensive gourmet brands are even better. Not sure if their price is worth it, though.
  • Cosmetics : natural cocoa butter face creams for a couple of cents each are a great bargain and something both useful and good for your skin.
  • Jewellery with amber or larimar stones : while you can find amber elsewhere, the Dominican Republic is the only producer of larimar stones. If the sky blue stones are your color, get a nice piece of jewelry to remember your trip.

As in other touristy destinations, avoid shopping at souvenir shops. You can find coffee, rum, and cosmetics at supermarkets. For cigars and jewelry, find a factory tour. This way, you’ll be certain to buy from the source and avoid scams.

Keep in mind that proper storage is extremely important, especially for cigars. Don’t ever buy from someone at the beach. Even if the quality of the cigars is good, they weren’t stored properly and are way too dry, making them a total waste of money.

📍 How to Book : Your accommodation will most probably have contacts with factories near you. The tour of that factory is usually complimentary. You’ll learn a lot about the production process and can purchase souvenirs at manufacturer prices.

Travel Tips to Best Enjoy Your Punta Cana Excursions

Secluded Beach - Playa Limon

How to find the best excursions in Punta Cana and what is the most convenient way to book them?

Here are a few tips:

  • Check what activities your hotel offers for free . Usually, these are factory and shopping tours.

  • Ask other vacationers what they paid and if they recommend a tour.
  • Ask the hotel staff, e.g. your favorite bartender or waiter , for recommendations.

The Best Excursions in Punta Cana

author image

See recent posts by Lara Grant

An array of all-inclusive hotels , some of the nicest stretches of sand in the Caribbean , and practically perfect weather make Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic a popular getaway. While many tourists are content to relax at their mega-resort's swim-up bar and lounge on the beach, there are several tours worth leaving the hotel for. Read on for our picks of the best excursions in Punta Cana .

1. Sailing and Snorkeling Catamaran Tour

Majestic Colonial Punta Cana

Punta Cana’s fine white-sand beaches are breathtaking, but you’ll want to head offshore for this excursion — a sailing and snorkeling catamaran tour. Sail the stunning blue Caribbean waters with a dozen or so other travelers, stopping at the Cabeza De Toro Natural Reserve for snorkeling. Snorkeling equipment is generally included and swimmers will likely spot tropical fish and sea urchins. Happy Fish Catamarans offers sailings that pass natural beaches without hotels for a look at the D.R.’s unspoiled beauty. You’ll also stop to enjoy drinks at a floating bar. The three-and-a-half-hour excursion with free round-trip hotel transport is a great value.

2. Monkeyland and Plantation Safari Tour

Monkeyland and Plantation Safari Tour/Viator

You may think you need to go to Costa Rica for some quality time with monkeys in a jungle setting, but the Dominican Republic actually has a lush interior landscape with adorable squirrel monkeys. Visitors who book the Monkeyland and Plantation Tour take a safari-style truck through coffee and cacao plantations to sample local fruit and learn about organic farming methods. The adventure caps off with a guided tour of a five-acre squirrel monkey habitat in a botanical garden setting. The mountain vistas act as a backdrop to monkeys eating from fruit bowls and climbing around. Round-trip transportation from Punta Cana hotels is included in this five-hour excursion.

3. Santo Domingo City Tour

punta cana excursions reviews

Composed of a series of tunnels and passages, Fun Fun Cave is reportedly the largest cave in the Caribbean. The all-day tour offered starts with breakfast and a 30-minute horseback ride through Los Haitises National Park, followed by a hike through the rainforest area of the park. Once halfway up the mountain, participants will rappel 65 feet (20 meters) down to the cave. Swimming, exploring stalagmites and stalactites, and observing dramatic rock formations are all part of the cave tour. The tour will end with a horseback ride back to the starting point for a traditional Dominican lunch of rice, beans, roasted pork chops, stewed goat or chicken, green salad, and steamed vegetables. The cave is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Punta Cana and transport is included.

5. Scape Park and Hoyo Azul Tour

Scape Park and Hoyo Azul/Viator

A suitable excursion for the whole family, this tour combines zip-lining through the rainforest with a dip in a pretty lagoon. An adventure park located a 30-minute drive from Punta Cana, Scape Park has it all: 12 zip lines stretching 1,500 feet (457 meters) — the last of which ends in a pool — suspension bridges, scenic trails, and the turquoise water-filled Hoyo Azul lagoon. One tour includes admission to the park’s many offerings, a guide, a lunch of typical Dominican fare, and hotel transportation.

Our Punta Cana Hotel Pick: Majestic Colonial Punta Cana

Majestic Colonial Punta Cana/Oyster

The property closed completely for two months in 2017 to thoroughly renovate the lobby and restaurants. Hi Nish, Thank you for your review! We look forward to your next visit and appreciate your recommendation. Saludos, Gianni, from Punta Cana Adventures

Dont speak English

Overall it was a good excursion. They showed us what they’re advertising, however they don’t speak English. So for the company if you’re advertising something saying the trip is running in English either don’t have an attitude towards someone who doesn’t speak Spanish and be rude or have someone who speaks English. The tour guide made me feel completely unwelcome.

Date of experience : April 19, 2024

Sorry to hear that, Laura. I'm pretty sure the intention was not to make you feel unwelcome—that is not what we stand for. It's possible that the staff member was not fully fluent in English. We appreciate your feedback and will use this as a learning opportunity. Best regards, Gianni, from Punta Cana Adventures

Zero stars worst avoid!!!

If I could give zero stars I would. My aunt fell during the trip because they poured soap and water on the boat and she slipped. After she fell they didn’t have the proper tools to get her off the boat. In fact they had no tools they got a boogie board and tied her down. An ambulance wasn’t called they took her to hospital in the owners car. They were the absolute worst and didn’t even return us the trip money. Please don’t book through this company save yourself the trouble. My aunt had to pay thousands of dollars at the hospital over broken femur.

Date of experience : April 12, 2024

Hi there, I’m truly sorry to hear about this incident. It appears there might be some confusion regarding the company involved, as the details do not align with our strict safety protocols and the overwhelmingly positive feedback we typically receive. Our selves and our partners take the safety and support of our customers very seriously and address all concerns with the utmost care and professionalism. As you have chosen to remain anonymous...we're unable to verify the details of your booking. If you feel comfortable providing more specific information, it would greatly assist us in resolving this matter effectively. Best regards, Gianni, from Punta Cana Adventures

Full day Tour to Santo Domingo

Our full day tour to Santo Domingo was excellent! Nathan was an amazing tour guide and continually impressed us with his knowledge and use of multiple languages. The colonial zone was very interesting and the lunch was fine. Loved the Cathedral and the opportunity to make our own chocolate bar.

This was exactly what I was looking for…

This was exactly what I was looking for in a snorkeling excursion. The boat was very nice, clean, in good shape. Not too many people. The crew was a blast! They had me dancing on the way to and from the Island. It was a little tricky for me to get from the boat to the dingy but the crew made the transfer safe. The island lunch was excellent authentic food. My son and his soon to be wife were with us. The photographer took photoshoot of them. They sure had some fun shots. Excellent job.

Date of experience : March 27, 2024

Hi Colleen, Thank you for sharing your experience! We're thrilled you enjoyed the snorkeling excursion, the crew’s hospitality, and the authentic island lunch. It's wonderful to hear that the photos captured fun moments for your son and his soon-to-be wife. We look forward to welcoming you back for more adventures! Best regards, Gianni, from Punta Cana Adventures

A Must do when in Punta Cana

A Must do when in Punta Cana. Good way to do many activities. Be prepared to spend or walk with goodies, water shoes etc

Date of experience : April 10, 2024

Hi Janeel! Thank you for highlighting Scape Park as a must-do in Punta Cana! We're glad you enjoyed the variety of activities, from zip lines to exploring caves. Your tips on coming prepared are invaluable for future visitors. We look forward to your next adventure with us! Best regards, Gianni, from Punta Cana Adventures

The tour was great

The tour was great! Communication and transfers was amazing and spot on. We were lucky enough to see 2 whales a few times. Only 1 downfall, even though the whales are in a national park the rules of 3 boats at a time wasn’t adhered to which made it feel as though we were bothering the whales too much in the natural habitat. Apart from that everyone else was amazing and our tour guide was brilliant.

We highly recommend this place

We highly recommend this place, the staff made this a great adventure, many added bonuses that wew were not expecting, cigar making, sugar cane display. History of the country, etc, etc. Very entertaining for all. Would go back again.

"Booking with Punta Cana Adventure was…

"Booking with Punta Cana Adventure was easy and well-organized. However, the tour itself was less enjoyable. The tour operator in Punta Cana subjected us to a 15-minute sales pitch by a local vendor who boarded the bus before our return to the hotel to sell us a local drink. I found this intrusive as I did not consent to being held captive to listen to a vendor I had never authorized. This was not indicated anywhere in the tour description. Be cautious if you wish to avoid a similar experience."

The staff on the catamaran made it…

The staff on the catamaran made it really fun dancing with everyone. It was a beautiful island. All of the staff was so nice. It was a really long day though as we were one of the first to be picked up at 7am and we didn’t get home until 7:30pm but all in all I would definitely recommend your company and this tour.

So much fun!

We had a great time with Punta Cana Adventures! We were taken great care of, the experience was very nice. Great transportation, guided us to the boat off the bus, and got us back safely. The energy was great on the boat too, and everyone had an amazing time.

Date of experience : March 10, 2024

We had the best, most exhausting, day!!

We had Angel as our guide and Pina as our driver. Both were wonderful, but Angel made this excursion fantastic!!! He had a great personality, made us all laugh and shared so much knowledge about the DR and the culture. We were absolutely exhausted by the end, but in the best way! All 6 of us in the our group had an absolute blast!! I highly recommend!

Deafening Music Literally - Good Time and Nice Crew

Catamaran was powered by motor vs. sail. The snorkeling took place not very far from the starting point and actually all activities happened within a relatively short distance from where we started. The only negative I have to share is that the music was deafing and you couldn't talk. I had to stop trying to talk to someone because I was coughing after trying to be heard and yelling. I've had an operation in my ear to correct hearing loss, and loosing hearing in the other ear also now, and I did use ear plugs for the last 1/2 hour and wish I had kept them in for the hours spent on board.

Dolphin Royal Swim

We did the dolphin royal swim and it was excellent- all ran smoothly and went without a hitch. My only (very small) complaint was that it would have been good to know how much the pictures are ahead of time, but I probably should have asked. They were very expensive and we didn’t end up getting any. Gianni and team were flexible and understanding when my son was sick the evening before our tour. They rescheduled it with no issues and were always very responsive.

Profesional and caring team!!!

Having such as experienced, caring, and fun team on our side made a huge difference during our Dominican Republic trip last October 2023! The experience from booking the trip to getting back to the hotel was nothing but exceptional. Punta Cana Adventures is the only way to go if you want to have a fabulous time! 100% recommended!-Nydia & Eduardo

I scheduled a group boat snorkeling trip and I have to say it was incredible. The staff was extremely hospitable and treated us like royalty. If you happen to take a boat trip in Punta Cana this is your crew!

Punta Cana Adventures Horseback Ride

Punta Cana Adventures was an awesome company to deal with, their customer service was top notch, we booked a Horseback Ride for 3 and 2 days later needed to add an extra person the actual morning of the ride. I text/chatted the company and they immediately updated our reservation with no issues. The whole excursion process with them was seamless!! I highly recommend using this company, there are alot of sketchy companies on the island. It's worth it to use the BEST. Mark

Trip great, but avoid shop recommendation

Had absolutely no problem with this tour provider. However, the guy working for the operator took us to a shop recommended, after our trip where we sadly got got ripped off. He was standing with us when we were overcharged and 100% knew. So, go on the trip, but when it comes to shops, avoid.

Personalized service- exceeded our expectations!

Hired PuntaCanaAdventures for a half-day private powerboat excursion January 2024. My family of seven adults was picked up in Cap Cana and then taken to Bavaro Beach for our adventure. We started the day with great snorkeling not too far off the beach. We were adjacent to a reef and were swimming with lots and lots of colorful fish! More fish than we have ever encountered while snorkeling elsewhere in the Caribbean! We then went to a sandbar where other boats were also anchored for some swimming and mingling. The captain and his crew barbequed a delicious lunch of a variety of kebabs with fresh vegetables and shrimp, chicken and beef. Finally Punta Cana Adventures accommodated our extra request which was to go tubing off the back of the boat! The customer service provided by Gianni and Modesto was personal, very responsive and just what we wanted! I usually don't write reviews but I submit this one to guide other visitors to Punta Cana and Cap Cana who want to find a super company that delivers just what they promise!

How to Get to the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is the second-largest island in the Caribbean. It offers several international airports. After several trip to DR over the years, I am sharing the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

The Punta Cana International Airport

With service from several international carriers, including direct flights from Britain, France and South America. U.S. travelers will find American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.

WiFi is available, and restrooms are located near the immigration line.

A valid passport with more than six months before expiration is required for your trip is required. e aren’t required to enter the country. A 30-day tourist visa will be stamped into your passport upon entry. The Dominican Republic Entry fee is included in your flight.

The Dominican Republic requires U.S. Passengers to fill out an online Immigration form before they arrive. Before my last trip in December 2023, my airline sent me a link (Delta Airlines).

On departure, U.S. residents can opt for the automated immigration lines. You will just scan your passport and pass through a gate.

The Punta Cana Airport features enhanced security measures with pat-downs. A TSA pre-check line isn’t available.

The departure area is fully air-conditioned and features a duty-free shop and another shop specializing in Dominican Republic products, like rum and cigars.

Find American fast food in the departures area, like Wendy’s, Sbarro, Nathan’s, Cinnabon and Baskin-Robbins. Also find a bar for pre-departure cocktails.

Find a small play structure for younger kids. The Punta Cana International Airport also features a nursing room.

When leaving the arrivals hall at the Punta Cana International Airport, a line of cab drivers will greet you. I recommend arranging transportation with your resort or hotel before arriving. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

There are several transportation and tour counters in the area. I usually check in with my transportation company to find my driver. Often they are waiting a short distance from the airport and pull up after you arrive.

Most cars in the Dominican Republic are air-conditioned.

What Language is Used in the Dominican Republic

The Dominicans speak Spanish though most understand and speak some English. Knowing some basic Spanish is helpful, especially the basics.

Hola = Hello

Buenos Días = Good Morning

Buenos Noches = Good Night

Muchas Gracias = Thank you very much

What Money is  Used in the Dominican Republic

The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (RD$). Though the U.S. Dollar is widely accepted. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Change will most likely be given in U.S. dollars. For those who want local currency, ATMs are located in hotel lobbies as well as the airport.

Credit Cards are widely accepted throughout the Dominican Republic. It’s advised to use a credit card for large purchases like lodging. Though use cash for souvenirs and small purchases. Tips are accepted and appreciated in DR from spa services to daily maid service.

Phone Service in the Dominican Republic

Since I travel internationally, I have a global plan through my U.S. carrier. When I land I just switch over to the local service provider. I just use my data to check email and messages. The provider I used throughout my trip to DR was Altice.

Most all-inclusive resorts offer extensive WiFi for their guests. Most of the time this service is included. This is one of the top things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Where to Stay in Punta Cana

Most resorts in the Punta Cana area are all-inclusive resorts. Travelers will find everything from luxurious and laid-back adult all-inclusives to family resorts with waterparks.

Some resorts are divided into an adults-only side with an adjoining family side, each with separate restaurants, pools and gathering places. Other resorts offer buildings dedicated to adults or families.

With several different resort areas in Punta Cana, visitors will choose from laid-back La Romana to buzzy Bavaro. Cap Cana boasts Juanilla Beach, one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean.

Near Punta Cana, Cap Cana boasts wide white sand beaches with lots of palm trees. A resort community, Cap Cana features the Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana and the Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana. Both of these properties opened in 2021 and offer a luxurious all-inclusive resort experience.

Nearby is Sanctuary Cap Cana, another luxury all-inclusive resort. Located on Juanillo Beach, it offers pristine white sand with mature palm trees.

Cap Cana is located just south of the Punta Cana International Airport. The Cap Cana Marina offers boat excursions. This area is ideal for watersports like kayaking, SUP boarding and sailing.

La Romana offers a quieter resort experience. It’s located west of the Punta Cana International Airport and along the Chavón River.

I stayed at the Hilton La Romana, an all-inclusive resort with tropical landscaping. It is close to Bayahibe, a resort town with shopping and dining. It is also the departure point for boat excursions to Isla Saona, part of the Parque National Cotubanama.

Bavaro features the largest concentration of all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic. It’s north of the Punta Cana International Airport and on the Atlantic Ocean.

Along this strip of beach, often called the Coconut Coast, resorts are shoulder-to-shoulder. The white sand beaches are the draw though some resorts offer bigger beaches than others so research is key.

Bavaro is quite busy. The resorts tend to be louder and the beaches busier.

Best Beaches in Punta Cana

With about 200 beaches in the Dominican Republic, it can be hard to choose. DR boasts 25 Blue Flag Beaches (more than the U.S.), known for their conservation and recycling efforts.

Macao Beach –Known for its surfing area.

Bavaro Beach –This beach extends for 30 miles and features many all-inclusive resorts. It is a favorite.

Juanillo Beach- -Exceptionally wide beach with mature palm trees. Since there are fewer resorts and many are gated, this beach is less crowded.

Bayahibe Beach –Located in the village and a frequent departure point for excursions to Soana Island.

Note : Nude sunbathing isn’t a common in the Dominican Republic. Even topless sunbathing isn’t a thing in DR. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Saona Island

Part of the Cotubanama National Park, Saona Island is a pristine tropical escape. With a lack of development, including hotels, it is an ideal day trip.

Christopher Columbus discovered the island and named it after a friend. It was the location for the Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

The easiest way to reach the island is via a catamaran tour. Most trips stop at Palmilla Swimming Area, a shallow area that adults can touch the bottom in the turquoise water.

Most trips depart from Bayahibe and take 8 to 10 hours. Lunch and drinks are usually included in the tour.

Popular Punta Cana Excursions

Arrange for a tour during your visit to the Dominican Republic to learn more about its agriculture and animals.

Feed a Spider Monkey.

Learn about the chocolate production.

Watch a cigar rolling.

Walk through a sugar cane field.

Take a Zipline through the tree canopy.

Learn about coffee production.

Is the Water Safe in the Dominican Republic

While visiting the Dominican Republic, drink bottled water. The tap water is NOT safe to drink. So drink bottled water exclusively during your visit. I even brush my teeth with bottled water or mouthwash. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stay away from the following:

  • Tap or well water
  • Ice made with tap or well water
  • Drinks made with tap or well water (such as reconstituted juice)
  • Unpasteurized milk

Complimentary bottled water should be available in your room during your entire stay. Water fountains are not the norm in the Dominican Republic.

What to Wear in the Caribbean

Need some help with what to wear? Here are all the best tips and products for your trip.

Beach Packing List

Liquor safety.

Practice some basic precautions during your stay. The drinking age in the Dominican Republic is 18.

  • Make sure all bottled beverages are sealed with their factory seals in your mini fridge.
  • Don’t drink from open liquor bottles in your room.
  • Watch bartenders make your beverages.
  • Before drinking, smell your cocktail.
  • Drink slowly.
  • Eat before and while you are drinking.
  • Drink bottled water while drinking alcohol.

Food Safety

According to the CDC, stay away from the following:

  • Food served at room temperature
  • Food from street vendors
  • Raw or soft-cooked (runny) eggs
  • Raw or undercooked (rare) meat or fish
  • Unwashed or unpeeled raw fruits and vegetables
  • Unpasteurized dairy products
  • ”Bushmeat” (monkeys, bats, or other wild game)

Insect Safety in DR

According to the CDC, protect yourself by doing the following:

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on your skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

I recommend the following product to treat your clothes before departure, available from Amazon.

Make an Appointment at Travel Clinic

I headed to CDC.gov for Caribbean travel information, including required immunizations. My family practitioner advised me to make an appointment at a travel clinic.

At the travel clinic, my nurse practitioner advised a Typhoid vaccine, along with Hepatitis A and a booster vaccine for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis since it had been five years since my last shot. I was covered for the MMR vaccine, or measles, mumps and rubella.

The nurse practitioner also discussed mosquito safety since dengue fever is sometimes an issue for the Caribbean. I packed a 3 oz. container of insect repellant and used it when I walked through a shady area and in the evenings.

Along with vaccines, she discussed traveler’s diarrhea (TD). She advised I start taking probiotics before and during my trip. I also drank a dose of Emergen-C daily, especially after long international flights. I packed some over-the-counter medications for TD symptoms since it’s the most common illness during travel.

Fear of TD–Traveler’s Diarrhea

I have a fear of TD. Who has time for that? I didn’t want to find a Dominican pharmacy, so I packed all the supplies I might need. Here’s what the CDC recommends.

  • Antiacid—like Tums
  • Pepto-Bismol tablets
  • Imodium tablets
  • Oral Rehydration Salts—available at REI
  • Prescription Antibiotics—prescribed by a doctor or nurse practitioner based on your itinerary.

If you get seasickness, here are the top tips and products to reduce the effects .

First Aid Supplies

Accidents happen so pack a basic first aid kit to be prepared, even for minor scrapes and blisters.

  • Pain Reliever
  • Motion Sickness pills, like non-drowsy Dramamine
  • Cough Drops
  • Cold Medication—I prefer a separate Day and Night version.
  • Anti-Histamine—like Benadryl
  • Triple antibiotic cream—like Neosporin
  • Anti-Itch Cream
  • Anti-septic wipes
  • Inspect Repellent

Restroom Supplies

When traveling away from resorts, pack some restroom supplies. You will need them outside restaurants and hotels.

  • Toilet paper, off the roll in a plastic bag
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Bleach wipes

Note: I left all medications in the original container to avoid issues with security or customs.
