This reef system in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in northeast Australia is composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for 2,600 kilometres over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres.

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park authority patrols and polices the area for any illegal activity. There are fishing closures during the year to preserve the fish stocks, so check with a local fishing guide for when the reef is closed to fishing. They also provide free maps so you can see where to fish and where not to fish.

This great natural monument has now been named a state icon from the The Queensland National Trust. There are number of boat tours leaving from Port Douglas to The Great Barrier Reef each day, on either a day trip or an extended overnight trip.

These tours cater for diving, snorkelling, fishing, jet skiing or just sitting back on a yacht and sailing the Coral Seas.

If you get the chance to go to outer space, look out for The Great Barrier Reef as you can see it from there.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms.

It is built by billions of tiny organisms, called coral polyps. The Great Barrier Reef supports a wide diversity of life, and was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981.

Best Time Of Year To Visit The Reef

snorkeling on the reef

Port Douglas offers a fantastic getaway throughout the year, thanks to its warm tropical climate and a variety of outdoor activities. The region experiences two distinct seasons: the 'wet' and the 'dry', which are often referred to as the 'green' and the 'dry' due to the lush rainforests that surround the area. Don't be discouraged by the 'green season,' as it has its own unique beauty.

The Green Season | December - April The green season typically begins with the first monsoonal rains in December and lasts until April. During this period, 75 to 90% of the annual rainfall occurs, accompanied by high humidity. Average temperatures range from 24°C to 33°C (75°F to 91°F).

The green season is a dramatic and stunning time when the flora and fauna of the tropical rainforests come alive. The rainfall is vital for the rainforest's existence. This period is particularly exciting for nature lovers and photographers as the tropics are at their most beautiful, with waterfalls flowing abundantly.

Great Barrier Reef tours welcome the gentle winds at this time of year. You are more likely to experience a “glass out conditions” in the green season due to the low winds. Glass out conditions offer optimal visibility and make for ideal snorkelling & diving on the reef. The calm waters allow for clear views of the underwater world, making it easier to spot marine life, admire vibrant corals, and appreciate the reef's beauty in its full glory.

The Dry season | May to November The dry season, from May to November, brings lower humidity, clear skies, and pleasant temperatures both day and night. Average winter temperatures range from 19°C to 24°C (66°F to 75°F). Less chance of rain gives visitors more options when planning a Reef Tour. You might even spot whales during their migration on your way to and from the reef.

This period corresponds to the peak tourist season, attracting visitors seeking a respite from the colder southern states. Families, especially during school holidays, are advised to book tour to the reef in advance as we have up to 50% more visitors during this time of year.

Geoffrey Dale

Great crew, looked after everybody extremely well, brilliant day out!

Ryan Turner

I had a great time on the Poseidon. The thing that stood out to me most was the excellent staff. They were incredibly friendly, funny, helpful, knowledgable, and fun to be around. The gear they give you is great, the spots they take you to are beautiful (not too much bleaching), and the food is tasty. I went on a day when the boat was at less than half capacity (only 30-something passengers) so it made for easy communication between crew and passengers along with short food and drink lines. I definitely recommend the Poseidon Cruise.

Maxine Schofield

One of the best experiences of my life. The snorkelling was sensational. The small number of people on the boat made this trip very special, we had personal interaction with Steve and Charlotte. Bernard Doughty

Need to be active and fit with good swimming to get best from visit by snorkelling. Sub was very good as was underwater view. Buffet was good but a bit rushed. Too much hard sell on trip. Take lycra suit option for water.

Hello, hello. We're back on the job and things are as hectic as ever, but we're able to cope again after our wonderful holiday. Thank you so much Carolynne for all your advice and arrangements. It was terrific to meet you and the highlight of the holiday for me, will always remain eating the freshest, most deliciously sweet muddies, with a bottle of champagne, on the verandah at Port Douglas.

Dear Carolynne, we wanted to thank you for your great advice you have given us during our time here.

On boarding the boat you can choose from tea or coffee with pastries and focaccia.

Kick back and relax and enjoy as you speed over the Coral Sea to the outer section of the Great Barrier Reef on our wave piercer catamaran.

Outer Barrier Reef Activity Platform

Once you arrive at the Agincourt Ribbon Reef activity platform, you will have an amazing 3.5 hours of exploration and adventure on the Great Barrier Reef.

Your tour price includes all of your snorkelling equipment (masks, prescription masks, fins, snorkels and buoyancy aids).

A marine eco presentation is also included in the reef tour ticket price.

This is a great opportunity for children and adults to learn about the wealth of marine life that will be brought to life, when you see it all close up and personal on your day.

There are even more free in-water activities you can choose from that will have you eye-to-eye and fully immersed in the amazing underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef.

Snorkel Tours Port Douglas

Snorkeling instructions and guidance will be given, allowing you to be more comfortable in the water and so enable you to enjoy your Great Barrier Reef trip more.

If you are not a strong swimmer and would like a little more support in the water your reef ticket price does include the use of buoyancy vests and floatation noodles.

There are easy access steps off of the Barrier Reef pontoon for snorkelers, so everything is made as simple and as less stressful as possible.

Disabled or mobility challenged guests can make use of the hydraulic wheelchair lift to access the waters of the reef for snorkeling.

Reef Education and Guided Eco Reef Talk

On this reef trip you will have the opportunity to learn more about the amazing marine life you will be viewing.

Eco presentations are given throughout the day and are included in the tour price.

If you would like a special guided snorkel tour with a marine biologist (extra cost) then this a great way for all the family to have fun learning about the fish and the corals on the reef whilst you are witnessing them first hand.

Semi-submersible Submarine - Great Barrier Reef Tours

The  semi-submersible submarine tour is a comfortable viewing vessel which sits you about one metre under the surface of the water.

Despite being shallow you will feel like you are sitting in a proper submarine.

Enjoy the ongoing commentary, as you cruise around the coral bommies (coral mountains), learning about the amazing shoals of fish and stunning underwater life that will be passing by your viewing window.

The semi-submersible submarine tour is also included in the reef trip price.

Underwater Marine Observatory

This is a unique viewing platform that is located at the front of the platform between all the “action”.

You can sit in the auditorium and watch the Helmet Ocean Walkers and the fish feeding and see novice introductory scuba divers experiencing their first time diving underwater.

You will see in the distance the exotic formations of the coral gardens of the Great Barrier Reef, the shoals of reef fish, parrotfish and butterfly fish and realise just how stunning the underwater world is and all from standing by this underwater viewing window.

Ocean Walker Helmet Platform Diving

Helmet Walking is a great extra activity option if you would like to view the amazing underwater world without getting your hair wet and still wear your glasses.

A briefing will be given before you Helmet ocean walk for your safety and comfort.

Your ocean walk will take you along an underwater viewing platform where you will see the amazing array of fish in underwater presentations.

You will be shown amazing corals, sea cucumbers and fish feeding with groupers, snappers and shoals of reef fish.

A certificate will be given on completion that you can frame and put on your wall as a holiday souvenir of the Great Barrier Reef of an amazing experience you will never forget.

This is another perfect activity for the non-swimmers.

Introductory Scuba Diving

You will join a small group and after completing some basic skills you will be taken by your dive instructor to explore the underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef.

Your dive instructor will take you down slowly on guide ropes to a depth of maximum 12 m where they will then take you on a dive tour and show you the colours of the many fish and the various corals that are home to many marine creatures we may have never seen before whilst snorkelling.

Your introductory scuba dive will last approximately 30 minutes.

Certified Scuba Diving

You can choose how many certified scuba dives you would like to do (up to 3) all from the activity platform.

All dives are gentle and relaxing with maximum depth 18 m (60ft).

Despite diving from the one pontoon, there are various dive sites that can be accessed, so you don’t have to worry that you will be seeing the same sights on all dives.

Your dive will be led by an experienced dive instructor or dive master that know the dive sites well.

These professionals can find all the best marine life and show you the best of the Great Barrier Reef.

This trip is ideal if you wish to go for a dive, yet worried about leaving behind your family members who aren’t divers.

Great Barrier Reef Scenic Helicopter Flights

The ultimate way to see the Great Barrier Reef is by booking a helicopter fly and cruise tour.

Leaving Port Douglas enjoy a low level scenic helicopter flight across the coral reefs and out to the Agincourt Ribbon Reef Platform where you may then snorkel and dive the same and see it in every other way possible.

You will simply be stunned at the site of this beautiful place from the air in your helicopter seat.

Your helicopter will be flying at 500 ft (150 m) above the Agincourt Reef system.

The natural beauty of the place will take your breath away.  You might even see shadows of sharks, whales , turtles, dolphins and rays as they go about their business below.

Helicopter flights must be pre-booked beforehand as seats and helicopters are limited.

Note: Infant age 3 must pay for a seat

If you wish to avoid the catamaran journey back to Port Douglas, you can also book a return helicopter flight back to Port Douglas or Cairns !

Guided snorkel tour with marine biologist

If you wish to make your snorkelling experience more alive and more meaningful, then understanding and learning about the marine life you are seeing on a tour with a guided marine biologist can add to your Great Barrier Reef experience.

Your marine biologist is a qualified university degree scientist and they will share their love of the marine kingdom with you on this snorkel tour.

You will be in a small group so it will be a highly personal learning experience.

There are two different snorkel tours offered to enable all visitors, regardless of their skill levels to enjoy and learn about the amazing Great Barrier Reef.

Great tour. Too bad we had heavy rains but didn't stop us from enjoying and snorkelling. Not enough shrimp on lunch for everyone. Some people took large amounts before everyone ate and they ran out. Shouldn't advertise them if you are going to run out.

Thanks for your feedback Richard, sorry about the prawns - it must have been a hungry crowd at he Outer Reef that day as the buffet on board Quicksilver is certainly large! We are pleased you enjoyed your time on the Reef and made the most of the snorkeling. The Tour Specialists look forward to welcoming you back again to enjoy all the Far North Queensland has to show!

What they’ve said about us

“ Liza Robbins “ We regularly visit Fitzroy Island as it is one of our favourite places for a family day out! The boat, food and staff are also fantastic and I can highly recommend a hike to the summit to take in the incredible views with a snorkel afterwards to cool off! ”
“ Wendy Woo “ Stunning island, lots of activities, the crew from Fitzroy Island Adventures were fantastic. Lunch was more than ample and delicious. Highly recommend for a fun filled day out. We will be back. ”
“ Pierre Lagadec “ Highly recommended! We did the Fitzroy Island full day tour including glass bottom boat. It was great, we had plenty of time to hike around all the walking trails, have a swim at the beach, have some lunch and enjoy the glass bottom boat tour. We didn't take the picnic option offered with the tour but found a nice pub/restaurant with reasonable prices and nice food options. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful too. ”
“ Andrea Bradley “ We had a wonderful day. Lots of good snorkeling - nice reefs toward the rocks, a lot of fish at Nudey beach. We enjoyed the turtle rehabilitation center. A little hike to Nudey beach - wish we made more time to spend there. What I liked about Raging Thunder are their times of departure and arrival. Very convenient for us. Also, their staff was extremely friendly with great service. ”
“ Liraz “ Beautiful place, the staff was very kind, excellent snorkeling gear and beach gear (kayaks and sups), good lunch, had a great time. ”
“ Deirdre Shiels “ Brilliant day spent on the island. My trip included snorkelling gear. You can hire kayaks and paddle boards on the island. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout the day. The map given on check-in was helpful to show you where everything was. The island itself is absolutely stunning the day trip definitely worth it. Would definitely book again with Fitzroy Island Adventures. ”

Port Douglas Reef Tours operate 365 days of the year taking visitors to the best outer Barrier Reef site known as the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs for a day of snorkelling and adventure on an interactive floating pontoon.

Considered as the best reef from Port Douglas this part of the Great Barrier Reef is said to be the most pure body of water in the world free of pollution and home to some of the most spectacular snorkelling and scuba diving in the world.

With the crystal clear water you can see the myriad of fish species, colourful and not so colourful corals in all shapes and sizes.

The Quicksilver catamaran is specifically designed to cut thru the waves and offer guests a much smoother transfer out to the activity platform that is permanently anchored on the reef - making this Pontoon Day Tour a popular Port Douglas reef tour!

Once on the pontoon activity platform you can then go off and begin your days adventure that may combine, optional scuba diving, an Ocean Walker Helmet diving experience, a scenic helicopter flight or a snorkel with a Marine Biologist who will teach you all about the reef.

Foating pontoons or activity platforms are great for families with children as they can move around on the platform and they can also snorkel in a safe environment, it's also a popular option for non-swimmers.

A Port Douglas reef tour on a pontoon offers so many activities including a semi-submersible submarine tour, fish feeding displays, plus the underwater observatory located under the platform for viewing the range of tropical fish and marine life.  You can even choose to take a scenic helicopter flight from the pontoon to watch it all from above (to be pre-booked).

For those guests that may have some disabilities this is the perfect reef day tour for you also. For the utimate end to the day imagine flying back to Port Douglas by scenic helicopter over the reef - choose the Cruise/Fly option and for those who do not like boats at all then you can fly out and back by helicopter which offers spectacular views in both directions - choose the Fly/Fly Port Douglas Reef tour option.

Port Douglas Reef Tour - Snorkel & Dive Silversonic

Port Douglas Reef Tour - Snorkel & Dive Outer Great Barrier Reef day tour

Departing   Port Douglas to the Agincourt Ribbons Reefs this Port Douglas Snorkel & Dive tour visits 3 exclusive reef sites in one day offering 5 hours on the reef and an opportunity to experience some of the best snorkelling and dive sites on the Great Barrier Reef.   Experience a day of adventure with a guided snorkel tour plus snorkel briefs at each reef site to ensure you see a variety of coral and marine life on your Great Barrier Reef day tour.

The skipper chooses these 3 locations based on the weather, winds, tides and currents along with the current marine activity specifically the giant Humpback Whales and the inquisitive Dwarf Minke Whales that come to the Great Barrier Reef to calve during the months of July to September.

This Port Douglas reef tour is one of only 7 boats in the world with a permit to swim with the Dwarf Minke Whales so as you can imagine this boat is very much in demand by visitors over these months.

Another special feature of this boat is the smooth control ride system which makes the boat move similar to a hover craft along the water in rougher conditions providing a lot more comfort for guests. There are also hot showers on board and the buttet lunch includes hot & cold food to refuel after the morning in the water.

If you are a certified mad keen scuba diver then this is a boat for you, if you are a snorkeler wanting to see the best the reef has to offer then this day tour is also for you and if you are ready to try an introductory open water dive then this is one place you really want to give it your first go. Certified scuba divers can enjoy up to 3 dives and intro scuba divers can enjoy up to 2 dives. For keen snorkellers and scuba divers make sure to check out the Great Barrier Reef Tour Pas s - this offers 3 different reef tours during a 7 day period!  Offering a great way to experience the Great Barrier Reef in three different ways, plus great savings!

If you are taking your family out the reef we would not recommend taking young children on this reef tour as you do not visit any island or any land during the day. Families may prefer the Pontoon Reef tour , or to Low Isles . For all water activities you enter the ocean from the rear of the boat from the hydraulic deck.

Port Douglas Great Barrier Reef Tours - Poseidon

Port Douglas Reef Tours - The Great Barrier Reef

This much loved Port Douglas reef tour that departs from the marina in Port Douglas on a daily basis taking visitors to snorkel and dive only the best locations on the outer Barrier Reef in and around the Agincourt Ribbon Reef systems.

This Port Douglas reef tour also has a roving permit allowing its skipper to plan the days cruising destinations based on the weather and marine activity as they too have one of the rare swim with whale licences that allows the guests to hop in the water 10 minutes at a time holding onto a rope whilst the Dwarf Minke Whales swim all around you.

The swim with whale’s season occurs in the months of July to September and as they are wild animals the interaction is of course at their discretion and the visitors and boats are not allowed to actively pursue them the whales have to approach you on their terms only.

Visiting 3 snorkelling and scuba diving locations giving the guests the full Great Barrier Reef experience - great for keen snorkellers and scuba divers.  This reef tour is perhaps not the best for families with young children as there is no mooring near land or a pontoon and young children need space and plenty of things to do to keep them occupied and happy.               For keen snorkellers and scuba divers make sure to check out the   Great Barrier Reef Tour Pas s  - this offers 3 different reef tours during a 7 day period!  Offering a great way to experience the Great Barrier Reef in three different ways, plus great savings!

Port Douglas Snorkel & Dive Reef Tour - Calypso

Scuba Dive and Snorkel Port Douglas Reef Tour

a close up of a sign

"I was super impressed with the explanation given and felt totally at ease getting in the water. The crew were friendly and the boat is the speediest way to get to the Low Isles. Visibility was incredible. Thanks Reef Sprinter for such an unforgettable experience."

"Kids loved it. We will definitely come back and use this business again. So easy, no fuss. Just beautiful reef time and snorkelling in one of the most beautiful places! So lucky to have experienced this today! Thanks so much"

"Fun trip but a bit bumps along 5e wat. We snorkelled and also got in the glass-bottom boat. Our boat captains were fantastic and so knowledgeable about the reef life. Very highly recommended. Loved the Reef Sprinter experience."

"Excellent equipment and organisation with handing out stinger suits, flippers, masks and snorkels. Kindly slowed down the boat when someone spotted a turtle or shark so we could investigate. A thoroughly enjoyable experience."

My question is:

* Is there any tour companies that offer and allow more than two intro dives on the one full day on the GBR?

I would like to do at least three intro scuba dives if possible and preferably out of Cairns, only because I will be already snorkelling out of PD at least once or maybe twice, but I am happy to do the intro scuba dives from PD if that's the best and only option available.

Thanks in advance for any help and information.
