College Rep Visits

  • NCAA Eligibility Requirements
  • College Information Night
  • College and Career Newsletters
  • Post-Secondary Planning

Did you know that each fall, dozens of colleges from around the nation send representatives to visit Penncrest High School, many of whom are admissions officers? This is an excellent opportunity for you to learn more about a college without traveling to visit it and to interact with a person who may be reviewing your application in the future.

  • Visits are listed in Naviance  under the “Colleges” tab and "What's New" on the home page.
  • You must sign up for a visit in Naviance in advance.
  • On the day of the visit, the Zoom link will be sent to you via RTMSD Gmail.
  • Visits are open to all students in 12th, 11th, and 10th grades.

Important Resources

Tips for meeting with college reps.

  • Listen and ask questions! Reps will usually go over the admissions requirements, housing, student life, and financial aid.
  • Remember, the reps are often admissions officers so take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions and get answers straight from the source.
  • Take notes and make sure you write down the rep’s name.
  • Many universities consider a student’s “demonstrated interest” when reviewing applicants. Attending a college rep visit is a great way to show your interest in a school. What’s even better? Follow up with that rep after the visit by calling or emailing him or her to say thank you.
  • Have a question? Now you have a direct contact at the university who can help you. Shoot him or her an email.
  • Keep in touch. If you accomplish something really awesome after you submit your application, send the rep an email to let him or her know.

Questions to Ask College Reps

  • What makes your college unique?
  • What academic programs is your college most known for?
  • How would you describe the kids that go there? Where do most of them come from?
  • Where do kids hang out on campus?
  • What happens on weekends—are there things to do on campus or in town, or do most kids go home?
  • Are fraternities and sororities a big part of campus life?
  • What are the housing options for freshmen?
  • Do many students live off campus?
  • Is there a sports complex or fitness center?
  • What are the most popular clubs and activities?
  • What’s the security like on campus?
  • What’s the surrounding area like? Is it easy to get around?
  • What are the most popular majors?
  • How would you describe the academic pressure and workload?
  • What support services are available (academic advisers, tutors, etc.)?
  • Do I need to bring my own computer?
  • What’s the faculty like? How accessible are they outside of class?
  • Are there opportunities for internships?
  • Is there job placement help for graduates?
  • Are any big changes in the works that I should know about?

Naviance is a web based program that enables counselors to offer comprehensive college and career counseling resources to students. The information below provides a general outline of how Naviance is utilized with each grade level.

Freshmen are introduced to Naviance in a group workshop prior to the end of the school year.  Students  will register with the program and have an introduction to the basic features of Naviance.  This will include how to research careers/colleges and building a resume.

Sophomores will attend a career workshop with their counselor.  Students will complete a personality inventory and results will allow for brainstorming and researching potential careers and interests.  Sophomores will continue to build their resume and complete a comprehensive college search.

Juniors will attend two Naviance workshops and utilize the program during individual meetings with their counselor.  Students will research colleges, compare GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and other CHS specific admissions statistics.  Students will utilize the program to communicate with their counselor regarding colleges they are considering and can register for college representative visits via the program.

Seniors will utilize the program to finalize college research and determine if the schools they are applying to are in their target, safety, or reach zone.  They will request transcripts and teacher recommendations via the program and it will be an integral part of individual counselor meetings.  Seniors will use the program to register for college representative visits.

Naviance offers a vast array of resources and is an incredibly valuable tool in the college planning process.  Below are some of the counselor's favorite features.

College Lookup:

This is one-stop shopping for comprehensive information on any college.  It provides information on admissions, deadlines, majors, financial aid, student activities and more.  Students can link directly to the college's website and view historical admissions data from past CHS graduates.

College Search:

Students can prioritize specific criteria to generate a list of colleges that may be of interest.  Search characteristics include Size, Location, Major, Athletics and much more.

Scattergrams

Scattergrams provide a graphical view of application outcomes for students who have graduated from CHS during the past four years.  GPA and standardized test data is displayed in a confidential manner and will assist students in determining their chances of admission at a particular college.

College Visit Schedule

Naviance outlines a calendar of college representatives scheduled to visit CHS.  Students register for these sessions directly through Naviance.
