Rount-Trip Trading Definition, Legitimate & Unethical Examples

Gordon Scott has been an active investor and technical analyst or 20+ years. He is a Chartered Market Technician (CMT).

round trip definition it

What Is Round-Trip Trading?

Round-trip trading, or "round-tripping," usually refers to the unethical practice of purchasing and selling shares of the same security over and over again in an attempt to manipulate observers into believing that the security is in higher demand than it actually is. By creating fake trading volume , round-tripping can also interfere with technical analysis based on volume data.

This sort of churning behavior differs greatly from the legal open and close transactions of day traders or ordinary investors. After all, every investor ultimately completes a round trip when they buy and later sell a security.

Key Takeaways

  • Round-trip trading generally refers to an unethical market-manipulation technique involving a series of wash trades.
  • Repeatedly buying and selling securities will inflate trading volume and balance sheet figures to game the activity and interest in a stock.
  • Round-trip trading has been seen in several high-profile scandals, including the Enron collapse.

Understanding Round-Trip Trading

Round-trip trading is an attempt to create the appearance of a high volume of trades, without the company behind the security experiencing an increase in income or earnings . These types of trades can be carried out in several ways, but most commonly are completed by a single trader selling and purchasing the security on the same trading day, or by two companies buying and selling securities between themselves. This practice is also known as churning or making wash trades .

Round-trip trading can easily be confused with legitimate trading practices, such as the frequent round-trip trades made by pattern day traders. These traders typically execute many transactions on the same day . However, they do have minimum standards they must practice, such as keeping at least $25,000 of account equity before completing these types of transactions, and reporting their net gains or losses on the transactions as income, rather than pretending gains are investments and losses are expenses.

Another instance of acceptable round-trip trades is a swap trade, where institutions will sell securities to another individual or institution while agreeing to repurchase the same amount at the same price in the future. Commercial banks and derivative products practice this type of trading regularly. But the dynamics of this kind of trading do not inflate volume statistics or balance sheet values.

Example of Round-Trip Trading

One of the most famous instances of round-trip trading was the case of the collapse of Enron in 2001. By moving high-value stocks to off-balance-sheet special purpose vehicles (SPVs) in exchange for cash or a promissory note , Enron was able to make it look like it was continuing to earn a profit while hedging assets on its balance sheets.

These transfers were backed by Enron’s stocks, making the illusion a veritable house of cards waiting to collapse. And collapse it did. In addition to other poor and deceptive bookkeeping practices, Enron was able to fool Wall Street and the public into believing that the company was still one of the largest and most profitably secure institutions in the world when, in fact, it was barely treading water.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) opened an investigation into the activities and several people were prosecuted and imprisoned. The accounting firm that handled Enron’s bookkeeping also went under because of its participation in the deceit. The firm was found guilty of obstruction of justice by shredding paperwork that would implicate members of the board and high-ranking Enron employees.

Kieran Trippier slams Newcastle’s Australia trip for Tottenham friendly

Trippier’s sentiments were shared by Southgate, the England manager

Kieran Trippier has criticised Newcastle United’s decision to go to Australia three days after the Premier League season ends to play two friendlies against Tottenham Hotspur and the A-League All Stars, calling the timing “not ideal”.

The England defender has questioned the amount of travel involved at the end of a gruelling 51-game campaign for Newcastle and with the European Championship finals and the Copa America international tournaments set to start in June.

Trippier will be among a number of players — including his club-mates Anthony Gordon, Joelinton and Bruno Guimarães, and Spurs’ James Maddison, Richarlison, Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero — who will be expected to link up with their international squads on the back of a 21,000-mile round trip for the matches.

Fly business class to Spain from Los Angeles and San Francisco from $2,599 round-trip

Turkish Airlines is joining the growing list of carriers offering steep discounts on business-class travel to Europe . Right now, you can book business-class seats from major West Coast departure cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco to iconic Spanish destinations like Barcelona and Madrid for less than $2,600 round-trip.

The travel window for this sale runs from November through March of 2025 — if you want to spend Thanksgiving in Spain, the sale includes the holiday. The flights all involve layovers in Istanbul, with some options including stops as long as 17 hours. The good news is almost every itinerary we saw involved an individual business-class suite for the longest portion of the flight. If you book this deal, you may want to consider planning a daytrip in Istanbul to get the most out of a potentially long stop in one of the world's most exciting and historic cities.

Deal basics

Airlines : Turkish Airlines

Routes : Round-trip business-class flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Barcelona and Madrid

How to book : Browse Google Flights, then book directly with the airline

Travel dates : From November through March 2025 (Thanksgiving holiday included)

This deal was originally sent out by the deal alert company Going. Sign up for Going to get up to 90% off select flights via its Premium membership , which users can try for free for 14 days and then $69 per year. You can also upgrade to the Elite tier for $199 per year for access to all the Premium deals, plus premium economy, business-class and first-class alerts.

You can also sign up for a free trial through this link .

Sample flights

We found flights in November from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) for as low as $2,809 round-trip. That's an excellent price for business class, especially considering you're getting an individual suite for the journey from LAX to Istanbul Airport (IST).

Look at how much you're saving with these fares, according to Google Flights .

We found the same discounted price for routes in March from LAX to BCN. Note the extended layovers each way.

The deals are even better in March on travel from Los Angeles to Madrid. You can book Turkish Airlines' business class out of LAX to Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) for only $2,599 round-trip.

Related: How to travel to Madrid on a budget and still have a great time

The best option we saw for travel over Thanksgiving was this itinerary from LAX to MAD that gets you into the capital the day before the holiday. It's available for $2,705 round-trip, yet another solid deal.

November has good availability for flights from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to BCN. Here's one mid-November itinerary from San Francisco to Barcelona for less than $2,800 round-trip.

The same route is available for a slightly higher price in January.

If Madrid is your preferred destination, we suggest searching in February and March. We found good availability from SFO to MAD for $2,809 round-trip.

Maximize your purchase

When you book this deal or any other flight, be sure to use a credit card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, such as:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : 2 points per dollar spent on travel
  • American Express® Gold Card : 3 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through amextravel.com
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express : 5 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 of these purchases per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar)
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® : 3 points per dollar spent on travel

Bottom line

Not all business-class cabins are created equal, so remember to check the model of the airplane that will be flown on the routes you're interested in. Most options we saw in this deal are for business-class suites, and Turkish Airlines is still in the process of updating its business-class product. However, the carrier does have a reputation for serving the best on-board catering in the industry , so you'll be in for a culinary treat if you book this deal.

Coombes starts as Rowntree makes five alterations for Edinburgh trip

STARTING BERTH: Munster's Gavin Coombes. Pic: Morgan Treacy, Inpho

Munster boss Graham Rowntree has freshened his matchday squad as the URC champions go in search of an eighth league win in a row by making five changes for Friday’s visit to Edinburgh in the penultimate round of the regular season.

Munster, third in the table with two games remaining before the end-of-season play-offs next month, will travel to the Scottish capital on the back of six bonus-point victories from their last seven, including last Saturday’s 47-12 derby demolition of Connacht at Thomond Park.

There are significant alterations to that match-winning 23 while fly-half Jack Crowley and replacement lock Tom Ahern have both shaken off knocks sustained in the last round to keep their places to take on an Edinburgh side looking to hang on to seventh place in the standings and secure their play-off spot and qualification for next season’s Champions Cup with a top-eight finish.

Mike Haley returns at full-back having been rested last weekend and replaces Simon Zebo in a back three with wings Calvin Nash and Shane Daly retained.

Antoine Frisch comes off the bench at outside centre as last Saturday’s man of the match Alex Nankivell switches back to number 12 with Sean O’Brien missing out, and Crowley, recovered from a foot injury, once again partnering Craig Casey in the half-backs.

There is a change at tighthead prop with Oli Jager set to make his first start since returning from minor knee surgery three weeks ago, replacing stalwart Stephen Archer while in the second row, RG Snyman moves to the bench as Fineen Wycherley returns to partner team captain Tadhg Beirne.

The final changes come in the back row where Jack O’Donoghue moves from No.8 to blindside flanker in place of Peter O’Mahony with Gavin Coombes coming off the bench at the back of the scrum.

There is a move from a five-three split on the replacements to a six forwards and two backs with academy and Ireland Under-20 back-rower Brian Gleeson returning from injury to take the number 23 jersey as the extra back-five forward alongside Snyman and Ahern, who was removed with a shoulder problem against Connacht having scored a try form the bench.

John Ryan returns as tighthead replacement as Archer is given a weekend off with Conor Murray and Rory Scannell the replacement backs.

Former Munster fly-half Ben Healy starts for Edinburgh in his first meeting with his native province since a summer move to Scotland, with their head coach Sean Everitt making just one change to his starting line-up for their final home game of the season.

Scrum-half and co-captain Ben Vellacott, who scored a try having come off the bench in last weekend’s win over Zebre Parma, replaces Ali Price at number nine, with the British & Irish Lion moving to the replacements.

EDINBURGH: W Goosen; M Currie, M Bennett, J Lang, D van der Merwe; B Healy, B Vellacott – co-captain; P Schoeman, E Ashman, WP Nel; S Skinner, G Gilchrist – co-captain; J Ritchie, H Watson, V Mata.

Replacements: D Cherry, B Venter, J Sebastian, M Sykes, L Crosbie, A Price, C Scott, C Dean.

MUNSTER: Mike Haley; Calvin Nash, Antoine Frisch, Alex Nankivell, Shane Daly; Jack Crowley, Craig Casey; Jeremy Loughman, Niall Scannell, Oli Jager; Fineen Wycherley, Tadhg Beirne - captain; Jack O’Donoghue, Alex Kendellen, Gavin Coombes.

Replacements: Eoghan Clarke, Mark Donnelly, John Ryan, RG Snyman, Tom Ahern, Conor Murray, Rory Scannell, Brian Gleeson.
