St. James Park and the Mall

This luscious 57-acre park is such an oasis in the bustling concrete jungle of London. But there’s more to it than just serenity. It’s known past dates back to a 13th-century leper colony. Fast forward to the 16th century and King Henry VIII fortified the area against repeated flooding so he could use it for his hunting lodge.

The Mall, which is the main road used by the Changing of the Guard and the Royal Family during public processionals, also has an important role from history. The transformation of this whole area as an important part of the Buckingham Palace property will come to life as your guide explains its unique history.

The palace waiting for you at the end of the Mall is what you came to see. Your guide will lead you to the correct entrance and verify your entry tickets, so you don’t have to worry about getting inside. Since no tour guides are allowed inside Buckingham Palace, they’ll make sure you’re set with your audio guide and bid you farewell.

While most of the palace is not open to the public, for a few weeks out of the year you can explore some of the most palatial rooms of the British monarchy. This part of your self-guided tour of Buckingham Palace will lead you through the ornate State Rooms. These are where the Royal Family entertain or meet with private guests.

You’ll see rooms like the White Drawing Room, the Ballroom, and the Throne Room. All of which have world-class paintings and vintage furniture—some of which have existed since the 1800s!

The room that interests most guests at Buckingham Palace is the Throne Room. Your audio guide will help you understand the importance and history of those stately chairs (Chairs of Estate) that were even used by Queen Victoria! It’s an incredible room to stand in as you feel the centuries of history and tradition that built a lasting empire.

The Best Tours of Buckingham Palace

A tour of Buckingham Palace is a must-do on your next London vacation.

On a visit to London , some of the top attractions are linked to the royal family. But nothing is quite as iconic as a visit to the one of the three official residences of the monarchy – Buckingham Palace . While it's only open to the public on select dates, you can relish in its beauty from the regal gates, snap a selfie and catch a Changing the Guard ceremony.

How to Tour Buckingham Palace

For about 10 weeks every summer (select dates from July 11 to Sept. 29, 2024), Buckingham Palace opens its elaborate gates, welcoming visitors to explore its lavish State Rooms, grounds and Royal Collection artworks. The Royal Mews is also open to visitors from March to October, showcasing the Royal Family's real working stables and ornate, historic carriages – including the Gold State Coach used for Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Coronation in 2022.

The Best Sightseeing Tours of Buckingham Palace

If you aren't here at the right time, fear not; this extravagant, 18th-century royal residence is just as impressive from the outside, making it worth a visit any time of year. Come on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Sunday morning to see the Changing the Guard ceremony – when the red-and-black-clad Royal Guard marches toward the palace, accompanied by striking military music – and see a tradition that's been running for more than 300 years. Combine it with explorations in the surrounding area of Westminster to see London at its most quintessential.

You can explore all of this independently, of course – but if you're looking to dig a little deeper, hear about the king's coronation and uncover local secrets, consider a guided London tour . Insider experts can point out the best photo spots, take you to the must-see sights and show you the ins and outs of the area while sharing  knowledge of the country's royal history along the way.

There are tons of options out there, so where do you start? Based on local knowledge and traveler review sites, here are some of the most highly rated tours.

Changing of the Guard Walking Tour

Tourists and domestic visitors at Buckingham Palace watch in huge numbers as Changing of the Guard takes place. (Photo by Mike Kemp/In Pictures via Getty Images)

Price: From $13

Duration: 2 to 3 hours

Standout perk: Witness the pomp of the iconic Changing the Guard ceremony.

Watch the Royal Guard march toward Buckingham Palace as you witness this historic, quintessentially British spectacle on a two-hour tour of Westminster's highlights. Accompanied by a military band, you'll see the Old Guard (soldiers on duty) switch to the New Guard as they arrive at the palace from Wellington Barracks. Your guide will explain which regiment is which, before taking you on a guided walking tour past other world-famous, attractions, including Big Ben, Clarence House, the Houses of Parliament , St James's Palace and Westminster Abbey .

Recent travelers gave high ratings to the tour, saying guides were able to take them to the best photo spots for the ceremony, while offering a wealth of historical and entertaining insight.

Tours leave at 10 a.m. and depart from the corner of Piccadilly and Arlington Street (between The Ritz and The Wolseley), ending at Parliament Square.

Local tip: Look at the Horse Guards Clock on the Horse Guards Parade – the official entrance to Buckingham Palace and St James's Palace – to see a dark stain above the 2 (II, in Roman numerals). It marks the time King Charles I was executed outside the Palace of Whitehall in 1649, after being charged with treason.

Windsor Castle & Buckingham Palace Tour

Aerial view of Windsor Castle and the surrounding area. (Photo by Samir Hussein/Getty Images)

Price: From $164

Duration: 8.5 hours

Standout perk: Get a rare chance to explore the State Rooms with Buckingham Palace tickets, and tick off two of the United Kingdom's grandest royal residences in one day.

This twin-castle tour offers the opportunity to enter Buckingham Palace and see its State Rooms, Royal Collection artwork and other treasures, with commentary from an audio guide. After you've toured the palace, you'll travel by coach about 25 miles west of London to Windsor Castle – the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, and the family home of the monarchy for more than 900 years. Explore the castle's lavish State Apartments and grounds, and visit St George's Chapel – the burial place of Queen Elizabeth II alongside many other monarchs, and the spot where Prince Harry married Meghan Markle. Recent travelers said the tour was a great opportunity to see inside both palaces. Several commented on the extensive art collection at Buckingham Palace, and many enjoyed hearing insights from the guides, although some complained about long lines. The tour takes place from July through September on select Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and leaves from Victoria Coach Station at 7:45 a.m. Local tip: Windsor Castle has its own Changing the Guard ceremony, as well as its own extensive art collection – the ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. on select days of the week.

Full-day London with Changing of the Guard and Private Cruise

The illuminated Millennium Wheel (or London Eye) at night.

Price: From $158; with optional London Eye or Harrods cream tea for an additional fee

Duration: 9 hours

Standout perk: You'll see many of London's key attractions in one day, and enjoy a river cruise thrown in for good measure.

If you want to combine a visit to see Buckingham Palace's Changing the Guard ceremony with stops at several other London spots, this is a great choice. The full-day trip begins at the UNESCO listed Tower of London where you'll have the chance to see the crown jewels.

From here you'll visit Buckingham Palace to witness the famous pomp and pageantry of the ceremony, and get the chance to admire the palace's impressive architecture from the outside. The day includes a tour of the elaborate St. Paul's Cathedral (not available on Sundays), before embarking on a boat tour of the Thames, passing key attractions including Tower Bridge and Shakespeare's Globe. The day also includes a photo stop at Westminster Abbey, where Prince William and Kate Middleton married in 2011, and a brief walking tour of Parliament Square. Travelers can choose to add a ride on the famous London Eye observation wheel (or opt for a quintessentially British cream tea at Harrods instead).

Recent travelers loved the tour and praised the guides as highly knowledgeable and entertaining. Many were impressed with how much they saw in a day and said it gave them a great introduction to London (although it's worth noting a few felt there was quite a bit of walking involved).

Tours leave from Victoria Coach Station at 7:45 a.m. and finish at the London Eye.

Local tip: If you fancy delving deeper into the Tower of London in your own time, book a ticket to see the Ceremony of the Keys. Dating back seven centuries, this nightly ceremony is when the castle gets locked up for the night, with a special exchange between the sentry and Yeoman Warder taking place at 9:30 p.m. between the atmospheric battlements – both eerie and magical.

The London Essentials Bike Tour

The exterior of Kensington Palace with the bronze statue of William III of Orange. (Photo by Peter Dazeley/Getty Images)

Price: From $38

Duration: 3.5 hours

Standout perk: Get active on two wheels, and combine a Buckingham Palace stop with a visit to Kensington Palace and other royal sights.

This half-day guided cycling tour is a great option to get active on your London trip. You'll start at Kensington Gardens – the home of Kensington Palace, where Princess Diana lived with the now King Charles, and Queen Victoria's birthplace. From here, pedal to the Royal Albert Hall to check out this elaborate concert hall, opened by Queen Victoria in 1871. Afterward, cycle through Hyde Park and on to Green Park to reach Buckingham Palace, where your guide will regale you with little-known stories about the palace. Continue on to Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben as you take in some of the capital's key highlights, before returning to the Royal Parks.

Recent travelers raved about the tour and were really impressed by the knowledge of the guide. Many enjoyed the small group size and said the cycling was a good, leisurely pace, with plenty to see along the way, and iced tea and snacks included as a bonus.

The tour leaves from outside the main entrance at Hilton London Hyde Park. The recommended minimum age is 9 – you can pre-book junior bikes and child seats. While the bicycle and helmet for use during the tour are included, attraction entry fees are additional.

Local tip: If you've got time after the tour, it's well worth exploring Kensington Palace a bit more. Admire the elaborate, Georgian-era King's Staircase and the King's State Gallery with its fine art collection, see the Queen's State Apartments where Mary II would come to relax or welcome guests, and visit the Sunken Garden, once a favorite spot of Princess Diana's. After, enjoy afternoon tea or lunch at the Kensington Palace Pavilion amid the gardens.

The Premier Classic London: Private 4-Hour Tour in a Black Cab

The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben across the River Thames at sunset.

Price: From $461

Duration: 4 hours

Standout perk: You'll see many of London's must-see attractions, and as it's a private tour, you can tailor the trip to your liking.

If you're after a private tour, this half-day trip in a classic London black cab is just the ticket.

You can choose to align your visit to Buckingham Palace with a Changing the Guard ceremony, and you'll get expert commentary from your personal taxi driver, who's also a registered tour guide. Alongside the palace, you'll pass must-see points including the Houses of Parliament, Downing Street, St James's Palace, the Tower of London, Piccadilly Circus, Shakespeare's Globe, Borough Market and Covent Garden , with options to stop along the way.

Recent travelers loved the tour and said guides were able to tailor the trip, stopping at spots both on and off the tourist trail and offering plenty of historical insight.

Your driver-guide can pick you up and drop you off at your hotel; or a central London location.

Local tip: Make a stop at Borough Market to try some of the best food in the city, with more than 100 stalls offering everything from Persian to Italian, alongside plenty of fresh produce.

Kate Middleton and Prince William's Caribbean Royal Tour Details Revealed!

The couple will set off on their eight-day tour of Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas this weekend

royal family tour

Kate Middleton and Prince William are following in Queen Elizabeth 's footsteps with their upcoming tour of the Caribbean.

During the couple's eight-day tour, which kicks off on Saturday, the couple will visit Jamaica, echoing the Queen's first visit to the island country when she was a new Queen almost 70 years ago.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's tour will start in Belize on Saturday. They will stay for three nights and then move on to Jamaica on March 22, followed by the Bahamas from March 24 to the 26th.

The tour — their first joint official overseas tour since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic — is being conducted on behalf of William's grandmother the Queen and will see them bringing sentiments from the monarch to the people of the Caribbean, a royal source says.

And the Queen will be watching with interest from her home at Windsor Castle. William has been talking with his grandmother about their upcoming trip, and she's shared some of her memories of visiting the Caribbean countries, a source confirms.

As they embark on their international tour, the couple's thoughts are also with the people of Ukraine. The conflict in Ukraine was very much front of mind for the couple and their staff as they planned the tour — especially as they made a visit to the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in London last week.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their staff are keeping a close eye on developments in Ukraine and will make adjustments to their tour schedule accordingly if the situation warrants it, PEOPLE understands.

As the tour begins in Belize, William will "take a trip down memory lane," as the palace puts it, when he takes Kate to see an army training unit in the jungle, where he spent a period of time alongside the Welsh Guards when he was in the army.

During their visit to the Bahamas, the competitive couple will take part in The Bahamas Platinum Jubilee Sailing Regatta at the Royal Sailing Club in Nassau, a place — and a sport — that was close to the heart of William's late grandfather Prince Philip .

The couple will also champion some of their favorite causes. Zeroing in on environmental issues, they will visit one of William's Earthshot Prize winners, Coral Vita, on Grand Bahama Island, and see their ground-breaking ideas for restoring and preserving reefs . It will be the first time that the couple has visited an Earthshot finalist.

Kate will bring the work on behalf of early childhood development to Jamaica when they head to Shortwood Teacher's College, where they hope to highlight the country's work on behalf of children. The college conducts research in the field and trains students to become early childhood education practitioners. It is the second time that Kate has brought the work of her R oyal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood abroad, after her trip to Denmark last month.

In Jamaica, William and Kate are set to celebrate the "seminal legacy of Bob Marley," the palace says.

"These are three countries with which Her Majesty has had an extremely warm relationship following multiple visits throughout her reign," a palace spokeswoman says. "Those trips have helped to provide inspiration for many of the engagements that Their Royal Highnesses will carry out during their tour."

"As well as thanking the people of Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas for their support, across this eight-day tour, the Duke and Duchess's program will focus on celebrating the rich cultures that are unique to these three countries," the spokeswoman adds.

There will also be glittering evening receptions in each country — though no tiaras for Kate — as the couple meet prominent locals and take part in community markets, such as the quintessentially Bahamian "Fish Fry." The Duke and Duchess will meet vendors who will be preparing local cuisine, including a conch salad.

The couple hopes to "meet as many local people as possible," the spokeswoman shares. "Over the course of their time in the Caribbean, Their Royal Highnesses will meet a wide variety of groups, including children, young people and families, frontline workers, service personnel, leaders from government, business and the charity sector as well as inspiring conservationists and early years professionals."

The trip through the Bahamas will also take them to see the effects of climate change on the fragile eco-system and extreme weather. They'll see firsthand how people in Abaco coped in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian in 2019.

On Monday, the royal couple joined Prince Charles , Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Queen Elizabeth 's cousin Princess Alexandra at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey.

King Charles opens Balmoral Castle to the public for the first time amid cancer battle

royal family tour

King Charles III is making a royal move that's never done before: opening the doors to Balmoral Castle .

For the first time since the Aberdeenshire, Scotland, castle was completed in 1855, guests will be granted behind-the-scenes access to the landmark. Queen Elizabeth II , the United Kingdom's longest reigning monarch, died at the private estate at the age of 96 in September 2022; the residence was where the queen and her family would spend summer holidays.

Tickets for the historic event – with tours scheduled between June 1 and Aug. 4 – sold out this week within a day of being released, according to the BBC .

According to its official website , Balmore is the Scottish castle that serves as a beloved home for the royal family, which was purchased for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert in 1852.

Historic opening of royal residences to the public comes amid royals' health battles

The monarch's unprecedented decision to open up royal residences comes amid changes within the monarchy.

The East Wing of Buckingham Palace is set to open to the public for the first time this summer, like Balmoral Castle. Guided tours of the palace's principal floor are scheduled from July through August, per the BBC .

The guided tours also come as seniors members of the royal family are battling health issues . After Catherine, the Princess of Wales, was notably out of the public eye for several months, Kensington Palace  shared a video  of Princess Kate in which she revealed she had been diagnosed with cancer .

"In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful; however, tests after the operation found cancer had been present," Princess Kate said. "My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment."

The princess said she was "well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal in my mind, body and spirits."

Looking back at the last century: A timeline of the royal family's biggest moments

Prior to this revelation, in early February, Buckingham Palace announced King Charles III's cancer diagnosis .

"During The King's recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have  identified a form of cancer ,"  Buckingham Palace said  in a Feb. 5 statement.

Before his diagnosis was revealed, Charles underwent a "corrective procedure" at The London Clinic after the palace had previously announced that the monarch, 75, was seeking treatment for an enlarged prostate.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

Footsteps of a Queen, Tudor England

Before radio, TV or internet, how was an English Monarch to stay in touch with the people?

Queen Elizabeth I went on tour each summer. During this Golden Age of England, Elizabeth’s reign brought wealth and stability to the nation and she enjoyed a special relationship of adoration and respect from her subjects. Each summer, Elizabeth went on her tours, or ‘progresses,’ to stay in tune with the needs and wants of the people. One of her more famous trips took place in 1575 and we will loosely follow in the “footsteps of the Queen” to discover some of the rich heritage of Tudor England.

Our explorations will feature the quaint villages, beautiful stately homes/castles and gardens throughout the Heart of England and around the capital, all stunningly beautiful in their own right and many of which have Tudor connections. See Stratford-Upon-Avon, Hampton Court Palace, Oxford, Windsor Castle and charming villages around the Heart of England. The Highlights of Tudor England. This is an itinerary we hope is a fun twist to the usual ‘homes and gardens’ tour!

The tour will feature quaint villages, beautiful stately homes, a castle and gardens throughout the Heart of England and around the capital, all stunningly beautiful in their own right and many of which have Tudor connections, some which would have been known to the Bard. Go backstage to 3 of the UK's top theatres, experience a theatre workshop and have opportunity to attend a variety of performances.

Maritime Britain

"Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves..."   This sceptred isle, set in a silver sea, has long depended upon its prowess as a maritime power. History records that, in the context of its time, it was the greatest maritime power ever. But in addition to the great fighting ships and traditions established by Nelson, Penn and Jellicoe, Britain's maritime past is rich with other seafaring traditions. It has been a nation of sea going explorers - Cabot, Raleigh, Drake and Cook. It has been a nation of pirates and privateers, real and imaginary - Captain Kidd, Henry Morgan and Long John Silver. It's also been home to unnamed smugglers and 'wreckers'. It once boasted the world's largest commercial marine fleet. It was, and still to some extent is, a nation of fishermen plying their trade from a hundred ports and harbours.

Preparations Begin On The Stands That Will Hold Members Of The Press During The Royal Wedding

Tired of being cooped up at home? Perhaps you'd like to imagine life someplace a bit bigger, a bit grander, and a bit more, well, royal? You're in luck, because many of the British royal family's palaces and castles now offer extensive virtual tours. Whether you want to traipse around Buckingham Palace or peek down the corridors of Windsor Castle, you can get a bit closer to achieving your dreams through these interactive online resources. Test them out and remember that there's nothing wrong with a bit of escapism.

Buckingham Palace

Queen Elizabeth II Views Summer Opening Exhibition

The Palace's virtual tour includes the opulent Grand Staircase, the White Drawing Room, the vibrant red Throne Room, and the Blue Drawing Room.

Windsor Castle

The Amir Of Kuwait On His State Visit To The UK

While you may not have been invited to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding , you can imagine being there while touring the venue. Windsor Castle has been a royal home and fortress for more than 900 years. When royal weddings are not occurring, the castle acts as the Queen's home—where she usually spends the weekend—and as a royal residence where she performs certain official duties.

With this virtual tour , you can start by going inside a traditional State Banquet in St. George's Hall. Then visit the Waterloo Chamber and the Crimson Drawing Room. Make sure to click on the "i" icons for even more information about each space.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse

Holyrood House

If you want something with a bit of Scottish flair, take a look at the Queen's official residence in Scotland: The Palace of Holyroodhouse. Located in Edinburgh, the Palace was the principal residence of the Kings and Queens of Scots starting from the 16th century. This Palace hosts visitors throughout the year, and is available for your own personal viewing online through this virtual tour .

The Tower of London

Tower Of London

While no one currently lives in the Tower of London, the building is technically a castle and is officially known as Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London. Founded in the eleventh century by William the Conquerer, the Tower has been used as an armory, a treasury, a menagerie, a public record office, the home of the Crown Jewels of England, and, most commonly, a prison. The Tower is now mostly a tourist attraction and a place to display the Crown Jewels.

Take a virtual tour, which includes photos of many of these precious jewels, here .

10 Downing Street

Polling Stations Open For The General Election

If you're in the mood for something more castle-adjacent (i.e. a MASSIVE house), Google Arts & Culture offers a virtual tour of 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Casually referred to as Number 10, the home is over 300 years old and has approximately 100 rooms. Number 10 was first used when King George II offered it to Sir Robert Walpole, the de facto first British Prime Minister, in 1732, so it certainly has royal ties.

On your virtual tour , you can explore the Cabinet Room, the Study, and the Grand Staircase. Each area also has accompanying informational videos, so you can really brush up on your British political history as you peruse.

A Full Guide To To The Royal Family Homes (That You Can Tour)

One of the greatest attractions to the UK is the many royal palaces and residences — many of which are open to the public.

Quick Links

What to know about the royal residences of the united kingdom, buckingham palace - the official royal residence of london, windsor castle - the official royal country residence, palace of holyroodhouse - the official royal scottish residence.

Following the passing of the beloved long-reigning Queen Elizabeth II, there is likely to be renewed interest in the Royal Family and Royal residences of Great Britain. There are a large number of palaces, castles, and houses occupied by the Royal Family around the United Kingdom and many of them are open to the public.

Queen Elizabeth II was Britain's longest reigning monarch in history and was the first to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee just earlier this year . She was perhaps the most loved and respected monarch of modern times and will be sorely missed. Later, King Charles will be officially coronated as King Charles III and Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and more will proclaim "Long Live The King, God Save The King."

Prospective visitors should note that following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and with the coronation of King Charles III coming up, many of these residences are closed to the public until further notice.

Anyone planning to visit any of the Royal residences should check their websites or the Royal Collection Trust for current opening information.

Perhaps the most famous Royal residences are Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland. These are also the three official residences of the reigning monarch (formerly the Queen and now King Charles III).

  • Official Residences: Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Palace of Holyroodhouse

While they are the official residences, they are far from the only Royal residences. For example, Balmoral Castle is not an official Royal residence but is where the Queen was residing and passed away in September 2022.

It is not possible to list out all the Royal residences open to the public in this article — there are 12 residences open to the public in London alone (some of which are former Royal residences).

This article will only discuss the three official residences. Other notable residences include Balmoral Castle, Sandringham House, Palace of Westminster, and Hillsborough Castle.

Buckingham Palace is perhaps the most famous and most visited of all the British palaces . It is here that everyone flocks to see the iconic Changing of the Guard.

Buckingham Palace has been the official monarch's London residence since 1837. It is used for many official events and receptions held. The State Rooms at Buckingham Palace are open to the public every summer.

  • Rooms: 775 Rooms (19 State Rooms, 52 Royal & Guest Bedrooms)
  • Famous For: The Changing Of The King's Guard (Formerly Queen's Guard)

Even though Buckingham Palace may be closed to the public due to the death of the sovereign, it may be viewed from outside for free.

Windsor Castle is located just out of London and is easy to visit on a day trip from London and is reachable by train.

Windsor Castle is the longest-occupied Royal palace having had a castle there since William the Conquerer around 1,000 years ago. It has been continuously used by the English (later British) monarchy since King Henry 1 in the 1100s.

  • Largest: It Is The Largest Occupied Castle In The World
  • Longest: Occupied Royal Palace

Ordinarily, it is also open to the public and visitors are welcome to visit much of the complex. It is normally open from Thursdays to Mondays (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays).

The admission price is £23.50 ($32) per person.

Related: Westminster Abbey: Why Visiting Is A Must For History Buffs

As it is an official residence, the iconic King's (Queen's) Guard is also stationed there with their iconic red tunics and their bearskin tall fur caps.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse is located in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh at the opposite end of Edinburgh Castle. It has been the main royal residence in Scotland since the 16th century.

The 16th century dates back to the times of the Scottish Kings and Queens (predating the Union of the Scottish and English crowns in 1603).

Related: Visit Windsor Castle: The Longest Occupied Royal Palace

Ordinarily visitors can visit the Palace of Holyroodhouse and explore the 14 magnificent historic and State Apartments, the ancient ruins of the 12th-century Holyrood Abbey, and the royal gardens. The palace is famous for Mary, Queen of Scots and her short reign.

The palace is normally closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays but is open on other days. The admission fee is £18.50 ($21.50) per adult.

The Princess Royal will travel to Canada from May 3 to 5 on an official visit to the Commonwealth country.

Prince Harry is also expected to return to the UK only a few days after his aunt returns from her tour for an Invictus Games event.

The Invictus Games 10th Anniversary Service was listed on St. Paul’s website for May 8, and on the official running order, the prince is set to speak at the service.

Princess Anne is returning from a trip to Canada when Prince Harry arrives to the UK

Harry’s wife, Meghan, is “rethinking” the trip as she doesn’t feel safe returning to the UK after Harry lost a court case over his police protection in Britain, according to a source.

Anne last visited Canada in 2023 when she visited the country twice within one month.

Apart from the date and country, the Palace has not released any further details of the princess’s visit.

In May 2023 the princess travelled to Canada to mark the 175th anniversary of the 8th Canadian Hussars.

Only a few weeks later in June 2023, Anne returned to attend a conference in Banff, Alberta in her role as President of The Duke of Edinburgh Commonwealth Study Conferences.

Princess Anne, who is widely regarded as the hardest-working royal, will be undertaking royal engagements two days before her royal tour and will get back to work on May 8.

On her trip to Canada last year, the Princess Royal was greeted by hundreds of people lining the streets hoping for a glimpse of the royal.

The princess has already undertaken an overseas tour to Sri Lanka and Dubai this year.

On their trip, the couple visited the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery in Colombo and concluded the trip by making a speech about the relationship between Sri Lanka and the UK.

Last year, the princess undertook between 12 and 14 engagements in an average week.

Royal Family Reunion Shattered: Prince Harry 'May Never' Return to Britain Thanks to 'Permanent' U.S. Residency

Prince Harry decided to reportedly switch his permanent living status to the United States, which has dashed the hopes of many royal watchers hoping for a family reunion.

"Harry renouncing his British residency in favor of the U.S. effectively crushes the hopes of anyone expecting the prodigal son to return," PR expert Ryan McCormick dished.

"Psychologically, it must be hard on those who view Harry as a symbol of Britain itself being of origin from the royal family," he added.

The Duke of Sussex decided to change the wording of his travel initiative Travlyst in paperwork related to the company. The fifth in line to the throne no longer recognizes himself as a subject of his father, King Charles III , and one insider claimed this change on the paperwork is "a sign of what's to come when Harry renounces his homeland in favor of America."

But the royal rebels' new projects, such as his polo show for Netflix , could be the one barometer of how the prince judges his success in the States. "For now, Harry may feel welcome in the U.S.," McCormick continued. "However, that could change if his upcoming projects aren't successful or his popularity wanes."

Harry's show will be produced by Boardwalk Pictures, who have also released shows such as Chef's Table and Pepsi, Where's My Jet? Miloš Balać , who has previously worked on Welcome to Wrexham , will serve as showrunner for the polo series, according to Daily Mirror .

This insight follows Harry and Meghan Markle sharing a kiss on a polo field in Florida on Friday, April 12, as both supported the Duke of Sussex's charity, Sentebale — and Harry's upcoming Netflix series .

"Known primarily for its aesthetic and social scene, the series will pull the curtain back on the grit and passion of the sport, capturing players and all it takes to compete at the highest level," a Netflix press release read about the fifth in line to the British throne's new show.

The Duchess of Sussex is also reportedly "busy at work" filming her very own solo Netflix program as well. "The first series is curated by Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and celebrates the joys of cooking , gardening, entertaining, and friendship," the streamers' statement continued. Some analysts are reporting this program will tie into the ex-actress' new lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard .

The statement added: "The second series offers unprecedented access to the world of professional polo, shot primarily at the US Open Polo Championship in Wellington, Florida. The series will pull back the curtain on the sport." This project is reported to be all about Harry, who has played the sport ever since he was a teenager.

Harry's previous venture with the entertainment company was the documentary, Heart of Invictus , which flopped upon its August 2023 premiere.

The Duke of Sussex has cited his 'permanent' U.S. residency status. MEGA
