Back in 2017, South Korean media machine JYP Entertainment put on a reality survival show that would change the world of music forever. Along the same lines as American Idol or America’s Got Talent, the series would group together contestants to become the next big boy band.

The idea was to put together the most talented kids in the country to create a brand-new band. The show was called Stray Kids — and once the final nine contestants made the cut, that became the name of the band itself.

Proving that the band could work together to make awesome music writing all of its own songs, JYP launched its career with album production and the video release for the song “Hellevator.” From there, the band came out with its first EP, Mixtape. Since then, Stray Kids has taken the world by storm, becoming one of the hottest international acts of the 2020s.

Currently, there are eight members of Stray Kids. Bang Chan is the leader of the group, singing, rapping, dancing and producing tracks. Han and Changbin also produce and rap, with Han also providing vocals. Lee Know, Felix and Hyunjin are all top dancers, adding vocals and rap licks as well. Seungmin and I.N. are focused on vocals. The ninth member who made it to the end of the show, vocalist Woojin, left Stray Kids in 2019 due to personal reasons.

While mostly born and raised in South Korea, two members, including leader Bang Chan, are actually natives of Australia. That comes in handy when the rest of the band need their press interviews translated into English, as the two Aussies do the honors.

Each of the members have their own individual personalities, allowing fans to focus on the ones they feel they have the most in common with, but they’re known to be introverted offstage. This is pretty much the opposite of their well-worn onstage personas, making them even more intriguing to fans. For example, Changbin is known for being “dark” on stage, but in his own life, he’s known to be a little more easygoing and even funny.

Since its debut in 2017, Stray Kids has made hundreds of appearances on other South Korean reality shows, often to support other aspiring artists competing for the limelight as it once did. The band has also shown up on popular Korean drama series, delighting the nation’s TV audiences, and making lots of music every step of the way.

In that time, it dropped two full-length LPs: 2020’s Go Live and 2021’s Noeasy, supporting the records with two world tours from 2019 to 2022, with another one on the horizon for 2023.

When the band is not busy making music and appearing on TV, it gets busy racking up loads of awards. It won dozens of official accolades for everything from best rookie band to best male artist to best video in top competitions like the Asian Artist Awards, Genie Music Awards and MTV Europe Music Awards. The time is now to find out what all the buzz is about because the Stray Kids have definitely been discovered.

Omg! Stray kids was amazing! We got really nice seats for a reasonable price and has a blast all night. It was actually a surprise for me. My mom and sister planed it. We drove past the Watsco center and of corse being the hard core stab that I am I knew stray kids was performing there. I started screaming and then they turned around and handed me the tickets. It was such a great experience and the group was absolutely amazing. The concert was so great and I am looking forward to attending more.

Stray Kids is one of my top three kpop groups so finally being able to see them was a dream come true. The performance being in an actual theatre means that everything echos, even the screams which got annoying but other than that it was an amazing experience. They are so loving and caring towards their fans and they love having fun with us. I love them so so much, if you have a chance to see them please do.

Absolute best concert I've ever been too. Stray Kids are my bias group so it was more than amazing to see them, and my friend bought us really close P2 seats so we could see all of the members clearly. It was an amazing show, they performed a lot of my favorite songs and it was super hype. Definitely worth getting closer up tickets and I highly recommend stanning Stray Kids and going to their concert.

AMAZING CONCERT. It was really really fun I’m sure I lost a few pounds during that time. It was very interesting to see the performances and all the little things put together for us during the show. everyone was respectful and there was even a random dance play before it started. No one fought over seats if they weren’t sitting in the right one and it all went very smooth. Best night of my life!

Stray kids are amazing. They’re all so talented, hardworking, humble, and generous. They really deserve WAY more recognition! Their concerts are amazing. They don’t even lip sync but i legit though they were because they were dancing really difficult moves, singing perfectly on key, and didn’t miss a single beat. Next thing on the list is to meet them in person 100% #STAN STRAY KIDS STAN TALENT

They sound amazing live! Also, there was a ton of interaction with fans and they even played some games with us. It made everyone in the stadium feel involved. They kept telling us how much they appreciated us. Felix lifted up his shirt and did a belly roll. Bang Chan went sleeveless. What more can you ask for? The sound quality was awesome. It was perfect.

It was super great. The energy was amazing from the artists and the fans. Everyone was really friendly. It was so wonderful I loved it. The only thing is that I wish there was more merch being sold because it sold out fast. Still though, best concert I've been to so far. Can't wait to see them again.

Really enjoyed the concert!! They didn’t take many breaks like usual groups do so it was packed full of performances! This is a really talented group and you will be blown away with their live vocals. I really liked how they treated the back up dancers, too! So kind and energetic.

In Tokyo, some public toilets inspire wonder

In Shibuya, a busy ward in Tokyo, Japan, officials want public toilets to inspire wonder. They’ve recently started a tour of 17 bathroom facilities designed by world-class artists and architects. The World’s Patrick Winn reports.

Public toilets. At best, they’re functional. At worst, dirty, dark and unsafe. But in Shibuya, one of the busiest wards in Tokyo, officials want public toilets to inspire wonder.

On a new tour, they’re showing off 17 bathroom facilities designed by world-class architects. One is housed inside a glowing cube. Another resembles a fairy-like woodland dwelling. And yet another toilet, operated by voice, will clean your backside on command. All the toilets are free to use, and many are sited next to hectic roads or train stations.

Officials in Shibuya claim the “iconic” toilets give a “new face” to Tokyo.

The project’s first toilets were unveiled in 2020, but the latest installations debuted late last year.

Only recently has the local government corralled Japanese volunteers to present the toilets to tourists willing to pay a $30 fee.

Architect Sou Fujimoto — who designed a toilet partly inspired by ancient Roman fountains — told The World he hoped to redefine street-side bathrooms and create something “beyond the normal, dirty public toilet.”

Local News | Ellicott City violinist to join National Youth Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, tour South America

It was the 18-year-old Ellicott City student’s final music lesson before she joins the National Youth Orchestra this summer at Carnegie Hall, where she will perform under the baton of former Baltimore Symphony Orchestra music director Marin Alsop and tour South America.

So Mutchnik wanted Cai to be at her best in such impressive company. He thought she might have a shot at being selected as the orchestra’s concertmaster, the player who helps the conductor guide the orchestra through the music.

“Even though ‘Scheherazade’ is imploring the sultan, don’t be too emotional at first,” Mutchnik told Cai. “Take that passage a little bit slower. Change the color so that it is a little thicker and less brilliant.”

Cai began the passage from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade” again at a more stately pace. The music emanating from the violin was still lush and full of magic, but now it sounded more self-possessed. This was a violin in full command of its considerable powers, a violin capable of enchanting the most powerful potentate in the land and persuading him to do its bidding.

“Very good,” Mutchnik told Cai. “You’ve got it now.”

This will be quite a summer for Cai, a recent graduate of Marriotts Ridge High School. Following a family trip to China in June to visit relatives, she will perform in New York’s Carnegie Hall in July and play alongside the famed French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Then, she will join other members of the youth orchestra traveling to Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, and meet with Gustavo Dudamel, who will become music director of the New York Philharmonic in 2026.

And after that, she will begin college as a freshman at the University of Maryland.

That lineup would be enough to make anyone’s head spin. But for Cai, her violin has always been a stabilizing force.

“Music’s always been a huge part of my life,” Cai said. “When I’m trying to tell a story through music, I get into a kind of flow state. I try to really feel it and to bring my emotions out.”

The National Youth Orchestra was created in 2013, the brainchild of Clive Gillinson, Carnegie Hall’s executive and artistic director, who wondered why the U.S. didn’t have a youth orchestra similar to the one he had been part of in his native Great Britain.

Each summer, Carnegie Hall trains and tours three ensembles for students ages 16 to 19: the main classical orchestra in which Cai will participate, a junior orchestra for students ages 14 to 17 known as “NYO2” and a jazz ensemble.

Douglas Beck, director of artist training programs for the organization, said about 200 teens were selected for the three ensembles this summer, or about one-fifth of the roughly 1,000 young performers who auditioned.

In addition to Cai, other Maryland teens participating in the main youth orchestra include violinist Anna Hilderbrand from Mount Savage, oboist Kyle Cho from Potomac, and violists Katherine Eunbee Song from Potomac and Katie Hwang from Rockville.

The young musicians will have an opportunity to interact with their South American counterparts while on tour. After they return to the U.S., they will meet teen musicians from around the world during the first week of August as part of the new World Orchestra Week, which will bring five youth orchestras to New York from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

Beck said he can’t wait.

“What happens over three or four days with young people can be transformative,” he said.

“These are orchestras that will play their hearts out with joy and energy and who are so responsive to feedback. They soak up everything that their teachers and conductors have to offer.”

In a way, Cai has been preparing for this summer for her entire life.

She comes from a musical family; her mother and grandmother teach piano, her older sister, Gloria, plays the cello, and her twin sister, Sophia, is a pianist who served as the accompanist for Olivia’s Carnegie Hall audition.

Like her twin, Cai started out on the piano at age 4. But when she was in the third grade, she switched to violin, began studying with Mutchnik and never looked back.

“The violin is so expressive and beautiful and you can do so much with it,” she said.

Cai participated last summer in NYO2, where she formed friendships with other gifted and passionate young musicians. But she said the part of the summer she’s looking forward to the most is performing under Alsop’s baton.

“I grew up going to concerts at the BSO when she was music director,” Cai said. “She’s so inspirational. I’m excited about having the chance to play under her.”

Alsop wrote in an email from Hamburg, Germany, where she was conducting North Germany’s radio orchestra, that she didn’t hesitate to interrupt her busy international career to work with the young performers at Carnegie Hall. This will be Alsop’s second appearance with the national youth orchestra, which she previously led in 2017.

“As you know, I am deeply committed to giving back,” wrote Alsop, who created the BSO’s acclaimed OrchKids program that uses music instruction to bring about social change.

“NYO is another manifestation of Carnegie’s unwavering commitment to future generations. I’m thrilled to be able to join for this anniversary tour.”

Noting that Cai won third place in the Radda Rise International String Competition last summer, Mutchnik said he has no doubt that his student could be a professional musician if she chose.

“Olivia has always been very precocious,” Mutchnik said.

“Many people can play the notes, but they don’t know what to do with them. But Olivia seems to innately understand how to express the subtlety of music. She plays with a depth that is equal to advanced college students.

“When I work with Olivia, I feel like I’m coaching and giving advice to an experienced adult. I’m not building her from scratch, I’m just putting on the finishing touches. Teaching her has been a total joy really.”
