Do I Need to Book?

We recommended booking a few days ahead as our boats are often full and you may be disappointed if you chance to just turn up on the day. We are flexible with bookings so it is not a problem if you decide to change to another day or cancel, whatever the reason. No fee is charged for cancellations before the cruise date (so long as you contact us).

What about the weather?

Our boats are designed to suit the coastline along which we travel and we will certainly make the most of any weather conditions. Our bookings are fully flexible so if you decide the weather on the day is not for you, you can give us a call and we can change your reservation to a different day. Our staff are upfront about the weather and you are welcome to contact us a day or two ahead to get an honest indication of the forecasted weather. Of course, in Tasmania the weather can at times be a little surprising and so a forecast is exactly that, a forecast!

What about sea sickness?

Being in open ocean, sea sickness can be an issue for a small number of people. We have had 13 years experience in dealing with this and have developed some very effective techniques to minimise the chance of sea sickness occurring.

We offer all-natural Travel Calm Ginger tablets to everyone when they step onboard. This product has proven extremely effective in preventing sea sickness in most people. Our staff can also suggest a number of things to further assist in minimising the chances of any sea sickness symptoms:

  • Selecting a seat in the back third of the boat (there is a lot less movement up the back of the boat)
  • Keeping your body temperature on the cooler side
  • If you wear glasses or sunglasses keep the lenses clean at all times
  • Avoid looking through cameras, binoculars etc
  • Stay away from acidic foods before the cruise such as Orange Juice and coffee

We do emphasise that communication is the key - if you have any concerns please let our staff know.

What do I need to wear?

It is important that you are adequately dressed because it is cold on the boats, even in summer. Warm jackets gloves, scarves & beanies are a good idea. We provide wet weather jackets which go over the top of your clothing, but we encourage you to bring a few warm layers of your own.

Can hire cars go onto Bruny Island?

Generally Yes. The road from the Ferry Terminal to our Booking Centre in Adventure Bay is fully sealed - there is no need to travel on any gravel roads. There is a short ferry crossing, which is not normally a concern for hire car companies. If you are concerned, we suggest confirming with your hire car company whether there are any restrictions. Alternatively, you can always join our Kettering Bus Pick Up Service.

Are young children OK?

Children of all ages are welcome aboard our boats and we take many children along on our cruises. As parents you are probably the best judge as to how your children will cope with being out on the water for 3 hours, but we have found that the majority of children enjoy the experience and love seeing the amazing wildlife, huge cliffs and caves along the Bruny coastline.

Is the cruise OK while pregnant?

For the majority of days the cruise is quite suitable for pregnant women and we have had lots do our trip. Our boats are custom built for the coastline that we cruise along. They are able to cut through chop and therefore we can avoid the bumping of waves that some boats experience. It is a good idea to take into account the weather conditions on the day of the cruise as this will effect comfort levels for someone who is heavily pregnant. You can contact us a day or two ahead to get a weather report for the day of your cruise and we are happy to move or cancel bookings if it is not looking suitable for you.

About Bruny Island Tours

About bruny island.

About Bruny Island

Bruny Island, a 362-square-kilometre island located off the south-eastern coast of Tasmania, is one of the most beautiful and pristine locations in Australia. Roughly 100 kilometres in length, the Island is tied together by a narrow strip of land called The Neck. Access is via a twenty minute car-ferry chug from the mainland of Tasmania Kettering to North Bruny.

Bruny Island is famous for beautifully preserved natural environments with world class beaches, national parks, stunning cliff top views and abundant wildlife matched with the finest local produce. If you have a taste for the freshest of oysters, incredible cheese and premium quality wine then you will not be disappointed. The Island is also home to plenty of unique wildlife such as the White Wallaby, penguins, fur seals, dolphins and whales off the coast.

Exploring and immersing yourself in nature. Climbing to the top of the sand hummock and looking out across the Neck, bushwalking around South Bruny National Park and Lighthouse, surfing at Cloudy Bay Beach, and observing seabirds in the shallows of Daniels Bay at Lunawanna.

Make sure you bring your camera, book a multi-day trip and make the most of an incredible place.

Attractions

Attractions

The Neck This narrow stretch of land joining North and South Bruny is one of the most scenic points on the entire island. Park in the small car park and take a quick hike up the staircase to Truganini Lookout, you will be rewarded with spectacular 360-degree views. The beach on the eastern side of The Neck is home to penguins.

Cape Bruny Lighthouse The Cape Bruny Lighthouse is located on the southernmost point of the island. It is a very scenic drive to get here, taking approximately 45 minutes from The Neck. The Bruny Island Lighthouse was first lit in 1838 and is the second oldest lighthouse in Australia. Windswept coastlines, wild birds, rolling hills, and wide beaches…this is a beautiful spot that is definitely worth visiting.

South Bruny National Park South Bruny National Park encompasses most of the southern island of Bruny Island. The national park includes the Cape Bruny Lighthouse, Cloudy Bay, Adventure Bay, Fluted Cape, and more. Adventure Bay and Jetty Beach provide safe, sheltered areas for swimming, while Cloudy Bay is a popular spot for experienced surfers. One of the best places to spot whales is at Adventure Bay during June to October. There are numerous walking trails just waiting to be explored. From the short stroll to the remains of an old whaling station at Grass Point, to a two hour walk to visit Fluted Cape, where you will have views out to the Tasman Peninsula and the coastal cliffs on Bruny Island.

Bruny Island Weather

Bruny Island Weather

For many people, the best time to visit Bruny Island are the driest, warmest months, September–February as your chances of seeing the penguins are higher. But Bruny Island is open all year round. This part of Tasmania you will find that January is the hottest month with an average temperature of 18°C (64°F) and the coldest is July at 8°C (46°F). The wettest month is March with an average of 50mm of rain. The Bruny Island weather can be ever changing so pack accordingly.

If you want to see southern right and humpback whales, the best time to visit Bruny Island is when their migratory path passes the east coast in May, June and July, and back again in September, October and November. The winter months are still wonderful for hiking, with temperatures between June and August an average maximum of 12°C.

#30 Tasmania’s Surf Safari

Though the mention of surf lifesaving usually conjures up images of golden Queensland beaches, this iconic Australian movement is alive and well right here in Tasmania. Whilst the conditions faced at 42 degrees south are certainly different than those experienced by our northern counterparts, the passion and dedication for the sport here in Tassie remains unwavering.

The opening of the 2018/19 surf sports season in Tasmania was marked as it has been for half a century, by the Mercury Surf Safari. This season saw the event celebrate its 50 th anniversary – a milestone representing decades of sweat, challenge and mateship.

The 1968 Surf Safari was the brainchild of the late Eoin McDonald, inaugural president of Park Beach Surf Life Saving Club and a legend of the sport in local circles. An endurance event on the Derwent River in the heart of Hobart, the Surf Safari has stood the test of time to remain a firm fixture on the annual surf sports calendar. It continues to signal the time to dust off boards and paddles and find out who’s kept their training up over Tassie’s cool winter months.

The original course was a tortuous 42km journey that saw surf boat rowers and ski paddlers race from Hobart’s Domain to the seaside township of Lewisham via Ralph’s Bay Canal. The canal, a short channel that links the city’s eastern shore suburbs to Frederick Henry Bay, acted as a shortcut to the competitor’s final destination. In an amazing twist, upon reaching the canal, crews and paddlers had to carry their craft across the land in order to reach the bay beyond. The celebrations at the old Lewisham Hotel are legendary and hold a special place in the hearts of many.

John Spooner standing outside a building in Hobart Tasmania

John Spooner recalls his role in some of those early races. “I was roped into the club as a swimmer but got involved in boats pretty quickly. Back then our club was Hobart Carlton…we later merged in 1975 with Park Beach to form what’s now known as Carlton Park.” John grins as he remembers the friendly but fierce rivalry in those early days, “I swept in one of the early Surf Safari’s and have great memories of those times. My retirement from the boats came in 1972 after winning the ‘A’ boat state title from Park Beach.”

A surf boat crew consists of four rowers and a sweep, whose primary role is navigation. “I rowed until ’65,” explains John, “Then I turned my hand to sweeping. I remember in the ’71 race we got to Seven Mile Beach and there was a really hot northerly blowing. I took over for a row for a while as one of our guys had had the flu and wasn’t so good. You just did what you needed to do in order to get through the race.”

John recalls the early days of life saving in Tasmania and the hot competition that existed between rival clubs. “We loved rowing at Park Beach. The waves could be really beautiful, but most of all we loved beating them,” he laughs. “It was always a joy to beat the Park Beach boys and the competition for things like the Pembroke Trophy was always fierce.”

“There were some real characters in the sport back then,” John remembers fondly. “The conditions could be terrible and you just never knew what some of the guys would get up to. There was always lots of controversy and even the occasional punch up,” he laughs.

“We trained a couple of times a week and used the sea breeze to test ourselves. We’d row into the wind to help build up our strength, then run the waves down and row back to the shed.”

John talks openly about the lifelong friends made through surf lifesaving in Tasmania. “I’ve got great memories of the old Musset Hut clubhouse at Carlton, and then a group of us building the new weatherboard one. Competitions were always fun and I made mates for life. Even today when we catch up…you just pick up where you left off. We always enjoy a beer and a chat.”

The Surf Safari course has been altered numerous times throughout its colourful history. In 1975, to allow for greater spectator involvement on the river and to account for the Tasman Bridge being down, the start was moved to Long Beach in Sandy Bay and competitors hugged the western shoreline as they raced to Kingston Beach before returning to the finish at Nutgrove Beach. A further change was made in 1979 to see boat crews and paddlers travel to both sides of the river. This period also saw the introduction of a run along Bellerive Beach on the eastern shore.

Various other course changes have been made over the years, morphing into the event enjoyed today – a 21km endurance event that continues to attract competitors from across the country. Its honour boards are adorned with some of Australia’s most decorated life savers as well as Olympic, World and Australian Champions. In more recent times, the Surf Safari has expanded to include sea kayaks, multisport craft, boards, outriggers and stand up paddleboards to become a true festival of paddling and rowing.

Gold medals were hotly contested in the special anniversary year. Taking out the Men’s Open Boat race was a crew of southern favourites from Carlton Park. Crew sweep Paul Chamberlain says, “It’s a long, challenging race. It can be mentally very tough on the rowers, maybe even more so for my rowers as I don’t think I talk as much as other sweeps do.”

Paul Chamberlain standing outside Carlton Park Life Saving club with sweep oar

Paul and his crew’s success comes off the back of an extra level of difficulty. Paul has been deaf since birth. Relying on his hearing aids he can make out about 23% of a standard conversation, however without them this is reduced to zero. “I don’t wear my hearing aids in the surf,” Paul explains. “Even though I don’t have any hearing without them, the guys and I can still communicate. We work around it and it’s fine.”

This extra challenge does nothing to dampen Paul’s passion for his sport. He loves the camaraderie of life saving and is no stranger to stepping in wherever he’s needed. With a reputation for loving the spotlight, he’s particularly prone to delivering long and thoughtful speeches to mark special victories. Ironically, despite his hearing impediment he’s often the first to be called upon to say a few words on his crew’s behalf.

Paul’s hearing has proven no barrier on the water. “I can lip read extremely well so I can understand what the crew are saying to me. They are all facing me in the boat so that’s obviously useful. I can keep things on track by talking to them, indicating direction with my head movements and by using eye contact. We all know each other pretty well so it works fine.”

Getting into swimming at just four years of age, Paul’s prowess as a pool swimmer saw him hunted down by Carlton Park over twenty years ago. “My grandfather got me into swimming,” Paul explains. “He lived just near the Clarence Pool and used to take me over there all the time. I turned out to be pretty good in the pool and swam in competitions right through until I turned 18, and then got into surf swimming. My hearing has never slowed me down in the water.”

Originally recruited to boost the club’s swimming ranks, Paul quickly found himself drawn to the boat arena. “It’s such a spectacular event to watch when the surf’s up,” Paul describes. “I jumped at the chance to get in the boat and have a row.”

Surf boat coming into the shore through the waves

After serving five years of a ‘boatie’ apprenticeship, Paul was approached to take charge of a crew and try his hand at the role of sweep. “At the time we were short of sweeps…it’s a hard role to fill. It’s probably turned out really well for me as I don’t really have the traditional build of a surf rower, as I’m more of a lightweight. I’ve really enjoyed sweeping and I love the challenge of navigating the ocean,” Paul says thoughtfully. “It can get pretty tricky out there when the swell’s up.”

Whilst boat rowers are prone to hands full of blisters, the challenges differ for the sweep. “Particularly in an endurance event, things are different for me than for the rowers. My job is to navigate and hold the boat steady. Whilst a 20km event doesn’t give me blisters, I am prone to muscle cramps and also the cold. It’s a long way, especially with the wind chill factor thrown in.”

With numerous state surf boat rowing titles under his belt, Paul cites his biggest accomplishments as a silver medal in the Australian Surf Rowers League at Shellharbour in NSW, and making the finals at the Australian Championships in 2016 and 2017.

“By nature of the conditions, surf sports are unpredictable…that’s part of the attraction. There’s always something that goes a little wrong in the Safari,” grins Paul. “This year we got a turning buoy muddled and actually ended up rowing an extra few kilometres. It’s not called Australia’s toughest endurance event for nothing!”

“It’s pretty amazing to think the Surf Safari has been going for 50 years,” muses Paul. “Although the course has changed, what brings people to the race hasn’t. It’s about testing your endurance, the mental challenge and about great teamwork.”

It’s clear Paul is deeply entrenched in surf club culture. “Our club has become an extended family to me,” he explains. “I have so many mates and everyone looks out for each other. It’s given me so much.” Training multiple times a week and spending hours patrolling southern beaches in the summer months, Paul’s no stranger to teamwork, “It’s great being part of a team and working together. We all do our bit and have a lot of fun along the way. I’m really proud of what our club has achieved, it’s pretty special.”

Paul’s enthusiasm for all things surf related is now being passed onto his younger club mates. “I’m sweeping for a young crew at the moment,” he explains. “It’s great to see more young guys coming through the ranks. Hopefully we’ll see them in multiple Surf Safari’s too.” Pausing to reflect upon the tradition that has spanned half a century on the Derwent River he says, “I’d love to see the Safari still going in another 50 years.”

Broker's comments.

Another rare opportunity to own one of the best tough sailing yachts in the world on short notice. This immaculate, hardly used 2014 Bestevaer 49ST is one of the favourite models built by KM Yachtbuilders. This beautiful, complete, modern Bestevaer 49ST " Mate " is clearly the little sister of the “Bestevaer II”, from the famous designer Gerard Dijkstra has built for his own use. The sailing characteristics are excellent and, also due to the presence of the pilot house, make this boat a very comfortable boat for long trips. Now ready to be admired and inspected.

Bestevaer 66, ANABEL

KM Yachtbuilders, Bestevaer 66 Built 2014 / €1,450,000, + VAT

Bestevaer 66, ANABEL 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

Bestevaer 66, ANABEL is an extraordinary world cruising yacht that was built for her current owner. She has taken him around the world in safety and with total reliability. He was closely involved with her build and she is very much a custom yacht. An enormous amount of care has gone into every aspect of her design and build, providing built in redundancy of her systems and safety for her crew and longevity for her. She has a powerful and easily handled sail plan and a secure cockpit. Her pilothouse is the perfect place for navigating and her pilot house windows were recently replaced with laminated glass which is super strong. She has a comfortable main saloon for living well and 3 good sleeping cabins which are comfortable and safe for her crew in a seaway. Her lifting keel (with 9000kg lead bulb) gives her enormous flexibility and ultimate stability. With her metal construction and robust design profile she is perfect for all oceans and would be secure and safe for high and low latitude sailing as well and for cruising in warmer waters.

ANABEL has been meticulously maintained by her owner with a series of works when laid up in New Zealand. Recently her underwater profile has been taken back and re-coated and she has new standing rigging.

Yachts with this level of capability and also those that are so well proven, rarely come to the market and ANABEL is very special. Everywhere you look there are design touches that are unique to her and very smart. She is a great alternative to commissioning new build if you have a very serious cruising programme in mind.

Owner’s Comments

ANABEL has many admirers around the world. In every port I have been to, people have come by to have a look and express amazement. Many old salts have been on board, and all of them liked the yacht (even the Coastguard).

The yacht is quite a machine, and the new owner will get in depth explanation of all the details. Since I am the only person to know the yacht in detail, I am willing to spend a week or more, to transfer all knowledge to the new owner.

Since I have very much built this yacht, and lived aboard for some years, I wish her to pass into good hands and for her to sail the oceans of the world for many years to come.

During her 7 years of ownership various equipment has been replaced, added or modified (partly in New Zealand).

  • New diesel pumps for better diesel transfer.
  • A hydro generator.
  • Windlass set up modified for smooth chain operation.
  • Anchor re-galvanized.
  • Improved boom with 4. reefs fitted.
  • Keel lift cylinder overhauled and 2. seal + scrapper added.
  • Keel guides replaced.
  • Various ropes and sheets replaced.

Recently Changed or Replaced Equipment

  • New anchor chain.
  • All old anti fouling sanded off to the base coat.
  • Yacht will go into the water with fresh Antifouling.
  • Rudder bearings replaced.
  • CPP prop shaft demounted, new seals, cutlass bearing, greased.
  • New pilot house windows from laminated glass.
  • Re-caulking of the teak in cockpit.
  • New upholstery in the salon.
  • 500m new rope as needed.
  • Paint repairs.
  • Toilet rebuild.
  • New standing rigging.

Attention to details during build and the consideration of every design element combine to create the best aluminum sailing yachts in the world. Not only can every Bestevaer carry her owners as safely in cold climates as the tropics, they are also a joy to sail in every condition.

BESTEVAER 45 S/Y

An aluminum sailboat that can be sailed anywhere short-handed. A pilothouse sailboat designed by Gerard Dykstra and crafted by KM Yachtbuilders without compromise.

BESTEVAER 49 S/Y

The 49 is the perfect fit between the 45 and the 53. She is a very capable world cruising sailboat that can be customized to suit her owner’s needs.

BESTEVAER 53 S/Y

The 53 is perhaps best described by owner and designer Gerard Dykstra; “Designing any boat is a balancing act between many desirable characteristics and inevitably the end-product is a compromise, never perfect in all aspects. However, the Bestevaer comes close to my ideal. The past voyages proved this right.”

Opening yourself up to the world’s extremities and the unknown is easier when you’re at ease. That’s why comfort is a key element. Even the most rugged off-grid adventurer sailboats from Bestevaer offer smooth sailing and comfortable interiors.

BESTEVAER DESIGN

No frills, aluminum, rugged pilothouse vessels designed for adventuring. Designed by world-renowned sailor and naval architect Gerard Dykstra from Dykstra Naval Architects, the Bestevaer family combines high performance with gorgeous functionalist design. Aluminum From A to Z

Bestevaer sailboats are built with the highest grade aluminum available. Hull, pilothouse, superstructure as well as interior elements are built with hand shaped aluminum by some of the best craftspeople on the planet. Continuous welds, additional plating, and no FRP are hallmarks of the Bestevaers.

Fully Ballasted Keels

Flexibility in build choices without sacrificing strength is another Bestevaer trademark. Keel choices include a fixed keel or a centerboard keel for serious shoal cruising. Both have nearly a 40 percent ballast ratio, ensuring excellent sailing qualities.

The benefits of a pilothouse are well known, but Bestevaers provide unrivaled security and comfort. These insulated aluminum houses have excellent visibility, keep owners dry underway, and make excellent living spaces while on the hook.

The new Bestevaer 36 from renowned naval architect Gerard Dijkstra is the smallest ever boat in the history if the Besteaver brand

bestevaer sailing yachts for sale

Product Overview

In a world in which yachts are constantly becoming larger, this Dutch brand is bucking the trend, with the smallest-ever model in its 20-year history. It’s intended to offer performance along with shoal draught and the ability to safely dry out on a beach.

These rugged aluminium pilothouse cruisers have always reflected what former professional skipper and renowned naval architect Gerard Dijkstra wants in a boat of his own: a safe, comfortable, and good-looking yacht for unrestricted, short-handed sailing. It has proved to be the perfect formula for a lifetime of ocean sailing, high latitude work and solo racing.

The Bestevaer 36 follows in a similar spirit, but is also intended as a boat in which Dijkstra can spend extended periods in the shallow waters, lakes and coastlines close to home that he has not previously had time to explore in detail.

“The Bestevaer 36 is a high-performance little yacht. It’s a very easy boat to sail and versatile as well,” he says. “It will easily take you around the world but is also ideal for cruising the local wetlands.”

This vessel therefore needed to be a sufficiently compact yacht to easily fit in small harbours and marinas, with the ability to dry out when sailing in the beautiful Wadden Sea nearby. Yet it still retains all the distinctive features of the brand’s larger yachts including aluminium construction, watertight fore and aft bulkheads, plumb bow, practical pilothouse and deep bulwarks.

Galley is to port, heads and diesel heater to starboard of the companionway. Light comes from overhead hatches and strong hull portlights

The two tonne ballasted centreboard provides a generous 2.4m draught when lowered. This is combined with a big rig to give good sailing performance on all points of sail, including close-hauled and light airs. Yet the board retracts fully into the canoe body, reducing draught to only 0.7m and creating a flat surface on which to dry out safely on the hull’s thick bottom plating.

Like the larger Bestevaers, this boat was conceived at the outset to offer crew plenty of protection. In addition to seats each side of the pilothouse, which has a 360˚ view, the coachroof extends over the cockpit, creating a very sheltered area. All lines are led aft for easy single-handed operation.

Generous beam helps to provide good form stability, as well as increasing accommodation volumes. The interior has a flexible semi-open plan layout, with three different style options.

The first boat, which will be the designer’s own, is currently in build and scheduled for completion this spring. This example is also being used as a case study for a transition towards more sustainable production processes at KM Yachtbuilders. For instance, 70% of the aluminium is recycled, as is the insulation, while environmentally friendly and largely recycled materials are used for the interior. It has a 15kW OceanVolt electric drive with sufficient battery capacity for four hours of autonomy. This is supplemented with regeneration and a large solar panel array on the pilothouse roof.

A couple of interesting options are offered for sail plans, including a 95% jib on a Hoyt boom, which makes for an enticing combination of very easy handling and excellent sail shape on all points of sail.

To help make up for loss of headsail area a square-top mainsail with 14% more area than the standard pinhead version can be specified.

The standard specification has a very high level of equipment, including the solar panels, electric propulsion package, antifouling wrap and a traditional style floor mounted with a Dickinson Alaska diesel heater.

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision

For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.

It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.

Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.

His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.

"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.

Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'

The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.

Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.

"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.

"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.

"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."

Tough decision to sell

Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.

Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.

"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.

"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."

a picture of a scrap book with photos of a boat and cursive writing

Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.

"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.

He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.

"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.

"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."

'Next phase' for the boat

The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.

When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.

"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.

"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.

"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."

a black and white photo of a little boat in sail on a river

Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.

"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.

Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.

"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.

"It's always been a part of his life."

renderings of Vitruvius Palm Beach superyacht

Vitruvius Yachts reveals 46m superyacht designed for the Bahamas

British design studio Vitruvius Yachts has revealed a new superyacht concept known as the Vitruvius Palm Beach. The 46-metre project is available for sale with Worth Avenue Yachts and has been tailored specifically for the North American market.

Several prominent shipyards are "currently bidding to bring this vision to life," according to the broker, with construction expected to begin next year.

The superyacht is designed with a low draft of two metres, making it best suited to shoal draft locations such as the Bahamas, Florida and The Chesapeake.

Accommodation is across five lower deck cabins, plus quarters for nine crew. The owner's cabin would be full-beam and features an office, dressing area, his and hers bathrooms and fold-down balcony.

While the interior designer is unconfirmed, preliminary renderings reveal a pared back, contemporary aesthetic. The main saloon benefits from full-height windows, a "convertible" lounging and dining area for 10 guests as well as a dedicated lounge starboard.

The main deck is fitted with a formal bar and second convertible seating area aft. Another major convivial space is the sundeck, which has a large sunbathing area, a bar, barbecue and a Jacuzzi.

Meanwhile, the beach club features a pool that can operate with freshwater or saltwater. Bulwarks open either side to form a larger lounging area, which is arranged with several sunpads.

The concept also includes a tender garage able to accommodate a six-metre and two jet skis, thanks to a Solas-compliant sliding beam crane and fold-up shell door for launching and loading.

Vitruvius Palm Beach would be powered by twin CAT 32 engines for a maximum speed of 15.7 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots.

This reveal follows the delivery of Vitruvius Yachts' 65.7-metre Alchemy .

Lines led aft to cockpit

All sail handling operations from one central position in the cockpit, including reefing. No need to go forward on the deck in heavy weather, perfect and safe for single or short-handed use.

Protected rudder stock and engine

The rudder stock and engine are placed above the waterline in a watertight compartment. Ensuring use of the engine should water ingress occur in the aft compartment.

S heltered cockpit

Feel secure and safe under sail and at sea. The deep, safe and sheltered cockpit with a fixed dodger and integral pilot house provides shelter from spray and wind.

Pilothouse with 360° view

Integral to the Bestevaer design is the pilothouse with an all-around view. It enables navigation of the yacht in the coldest of areas from inside a warm and protected environment.

Fully ballasted keels

Safety first

Integrated chainplates, bulkheads, aluminium bollards, diesel tanks, exterior handholds and through-hull fittings. Strength, safety and reliability are what make a Bestevaer stand out.

Watertight bulkheads

Safety is paramount on the water. To avoid ingress of water, the yacht is fitted with 2 watertight bulkheads in aft and bow, equalling 3 watertight compartments. For those looking for extra security an additional masthead bulkhead with watertight door can be fitted.

Ample storage space

With a large sail locker in the bow and deep lazarette's in the aft there’s ample space for bikes, toys, tools and provisions. Additionally, one of the interior aft cabins can be converted to a functional storage room.

You can choose between a fixed keel or a centreboard. The fixed keel has a ballast ratio of 26,5% (5.300 kg). The centreboard keel has a ballast ratio of 23% (4.600 kg). The centreboard keel is fully ballasted to ensure excellent sailing qualities.

First look: Swan 128 – second largest Swan ever

  • Toby Hodges
  • April 5, 2023

We take a quick look at the new Swan 128, due to be launched in 2025. An all-carbon superyacht designed for long ocean voyages

yachtworld swan

Product Overview

Unveiled at last year’s Monaco Yacht Show, the Swan 128 is the second largest yacht ever for the Finnish yard and the largest in its current Maxi range. Construction is at an early stage, with the mould still being built around the finished plug.

The Swan 128 draws on the naval architecture of Germán Frers, exterior design of Lucio Micheletti and an interior by Misa Poggi. And the result is very much part of the Swan family – a familiar, low-profile hull with a semi-raised coachroof.

This is an all-carbon yacht designed for long ocean voyages, but with the pace to hold its own at a superyacht regatta without any dramatic transformation. Frers commissioned a full CFD study from Cape Horn Engineering to optimise the shape of the canoe body in all conditions.

yachtworld swan

ORC (Offshore Racing Congress) velocity predictions for the boat show it matching true wind speed up to 14 knots, and topping out around 17-18 knots – although Frers said the aim was to exceed this with careful engineering and optimisation.

A 6.2m telescopic keel and twin rudders as far outboard as possible offer good performance potential.

A full-beam owner’s cabin and bathroom fills the bow, and there are a further guest double and two twin cabins. A flexible lounge, office or dining area gives way to the saloon, which is raised a few steps with views out of the coachroof windows over low bulwarks.

The deck, coachroof and coaming are decked with wood. Swan’s characteristic long guest cockpit can be covered for shade and upholstery runs to seating and a pair of huge sunpads. There’s independent crew access to the twin helm stations further aft. A 4.5m tender can be carried inside the cavernous fold-down transom, which converts into a large beach club.

The boat is scheduled for launch in 2025.

Swan 128 specifications

LOA: 38.98m / 127ft 8in LWL: 35.94m / 117ft 8in Beam: 8.65m / 28ft 3in Draught: 4.70m / 15ft 3in Displacement: 122.8 tonnes

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Putin taunts the West with 'first ever' visit to remote ice-covered 'frontier region' just 55 miles from the US - as Zelensky tries to drum up war support in Lithuania

  • Chukotka is Russia's easternmost region, sharing a maritime border with Alaska

President Vladimir Putin  has arrived for his first-ever presidential visit to Chukotka in Russia 's Far East - just 55 miles from the US state of Alaska .

Putin arrived in Anadyr, the local capital of the Chukotka region this morning after flying from Moscow some nine time zones away.

Chukotka is the easternmost region of Russia, with a maritime border on the Bering Strait with Alaska.

The Russian president was met in Anadyr by a motorcade and was whisked away in a limousine amid frigid temperatures of -28C.

It's the closest he has come to US soil since he met with President  Barack Obama in New York City in 2015.

Chukotka is so close to Alaska that Roman Abramovich - the ex-Chelsea FC owner - was reported to fly to Anchorage in Alaska for lunch when he was the governor of the region from 2001 - 2008.

Putin's visit comes at a time when US-Russian relations are at their lowest ebb in decades amid the war in Ukraine and a growing East-West divide.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today landed in Lithuania as part of an unannounced trip to the Baltic states to drum up more support for the conflict.

Global war for control of the ARCTIC: Climate change is unlocking untapped natural resources, new trade routes... and a new international conflict that RUSSIA is already winning

The three Baltic states - all former Soviet republics which are now EU and NATO members - are among Ukraine's staunchest allies.

'Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are our reliable friends and principled partners. Today, I arrived in Vilnius before going to Tallinn and Riga,' Zelensky said on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

'Security, EU and NATO integration, cooperation on electronic warfare and drones, and further coordination of European support are all on the agenda,' he said.

The Baltic tour marks Zelensky's first official trip abroad this year.

In Lithuania, a key donor to Ukraine, Zelensky said he will hold talks with the president, prime minister and the speaker of parliament, and meet with the Ukrainian community.

The visit comes as other Kyiv allies waver on fresh aid, nearly two years into Russia's invasion.

Ukraine has come under intense Russian shelling in recent weeks, retaliating with strikes on Russia's border city of Belgorod.

Zelensky has urged allies to keep military support flowing and held in-person talks with officials from the United States, Germany and Norway last month.

But an EU aid package worth 50 billion euros ($55 billion) has been stuck in Brussels following a veto by Hungary, while the US Congress remains divided on sending additional aid to Ukraine.

Following his trip to Chukotka, Putin is expected to visit several regions in the Russian Far East to boost his re-election campaign amid the war with Ukraine, which has seen more than 300,000 Russians killed or maimed.

He is due to stand in March, seeking another six years in the Kremlin.

The only Kremlin leader ever to travel to Chukotka previously was Dmitry Medvedev in 2008.

Putin's trip sees him escape a wave of ugly protests in western Russia over hundreds of thousands of people scraping by in freezing conditions due to breakdowns in communal heating supplies.

In Elektrostal, Moscow region, desperate residents say they have had no communal heating - which Russians routinely expect the state to supply usually through piped hot water - for the entire winter so far.

'We have been without heating since [9 October],' one resident said in a video circulating on Telegram.

'It is impossible to be in our homes… We are freezing! We are freezing! We are freezing!' they said.
