Animal Attractions

The Springfield area offers an array of opportunities to get up close with animals from around the world thanks to attractions that educate while they entertain.

Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium

Wonders of Wildlife Museum & Aquarium was voted America’s Best Aquarium and Best New Attraction in “USA Today” reader polls. Featuring an immersive design with more than 35,000 live fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. The attraction is home to 1.5 million gallons of saltwater and freshwater aquariums along with the immersive wildlife galleries that bring visitors eye-to-eye with the greatest collection of record-setting game animals ever assembled.

Parent and daughter feeding giraffe at Dickerson Park Zoo

Dickerson Park Zoo is a self-guided walking tour with a wide variety of animal exhibits. The zoo is organized geographically with animals from Asia, South America, Australia, Africa and other parts of the world. The Missouri Habitats area features animals native to the Ozarks, including playful otters, white-tailed deer, wolves and black bears. A reptile house, elephants, special events and more provide hours of fun. There’s even a miniature train ride, a gift shop, playground and cafe.

Wild Animal Safari

Wild Animal Safari includes a small walk-through zoo featuring a petting area, monkeys, a giraffe and other creatures along with a reptile house. The attraction has a ride-through tour where patrons can see - and feed - dozens of animals and learn about them from a well-versed tour guide. Another option is to drive through in your own vehicle but USDA regulations prohibit feeding the animals without a guide present and windows must be rolled up.

National Tiger Sanctuary

At National Tiger Sanctuary , home to several exotic felines, only guided walking tours are allowed with feeding tours and other special tours as options. During the tours, guides provide information about each feline and what brought them to the sanctuary, such as owners that no longer wanted the animals or rescues from situations where the animals’ lives were in danger or they had poor quality of life. Along with tigers, the sanctuary has African lions, mountain lions, leopards and pumas, and don’t be surprised to see domestic animals, such as dogs and cats, on the grounds.

Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park

Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park allows kids to explore the rich agricultural heritage of the Ozarks thanks to a red barn that’s home to hoofed livestock, such as miniature horses and donkeys, goats and sheep. A cattle barn houses beef and dairy animals. Fowl and other livestock are also on hand for hands-on experiences. Be sure to check out Irene the Dairy queen, a life-sized fiberglass bovine that allows visitors the opportunity to see what it’s like to milk a cow.

We had so much fun! I've never been this close to a giraffe and he kept us entertained to say the least. The drive thru portion was way longer than I expected and the animals were fun!

safari drive through springfield mo

One of the best day trips we have done so far. We had the best experience there. Our 3 year old loved it!

safari drive through springfield mo

This park was so much fun. The drive through safari was awesome! We got to feed so many animals, including a white buffalo and zebra. The drive is about 1.5 hours and absolutely worth it! We were passing through and decided to check it out so glad we did. We live 5 hours away and my daughter wants us to take a weekend trip to go back for her birthday!

safari drive through springfield mo

A great place to stop at least once. Especially if you have animal lovers in your family. The walk around has lots of animals who come up for food. The drive thru has triple the amount of animals that come to your car windows and try to hitch a ride with you. Awesome experience! The restrooms are clean, the gift shop has some monkeys who are entertaining. There's a snack bar and dip n dots for sale if your hungry or need a cool place to relax.

safari drive through springfield mo

This place is amazing!!! We been to several drive through encounters and other states like Oregon. By far this is the best one. We even showed up on our rainy day. Lot of the wild animals behind the cage we were able to get up really close like 3 ft away. The gift shop has few cute monkeys. And there's also a small indoor reptile place to look at. It was the longest drive through. Lot of the animals we engage with we're very human and imprinted. I saw emus, ostrich, zebras, bison, several types of deers donkeys pigs, camels and llamas. The zebras were my favorite when I was feeding them from my hand. But when I seen them nibble on my car mirror it was time for me to go lol!! This establishment spins millions on feeding these animals and taking care of them. I recommend buying two or three bags to help feed animals. This looks like it's going to be my monthly Hangout to visit. Now one of my favorite places and best places to visit in Missouri.

We always have a great time here! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable on the animals. We have done 3 different encounters with animals and they have all been amazing!! My girls insist on season passes each year!

This was the best birthday I have had in along time. Was so much fun getting to feed and interact with all the animals. Some of the animals can get a little ornery but funny at the same time. Add the sloth interaction and had such a great time feed them. All the staff were awesome. I will definitely be back.

Don't waste your money unless you want to see a lot of deer. $175.00 for rental of their jeep, 6 people and 5 bags of food and still had 2 full bags left over not worth it

Photo of Johnny C.

The kids loved the experience of the drive thru zoo and seeing animals up close and feeding most of them! The moms did the extra sloth experience and loved it!

The "safari": Well worth the hour drive if you're staying in Branson. We went first thing in the morning to avoid the heat. Even on a 100* day (90s when we were there) the bus with the windows removed had plenty of airflow and we did not find ourselves to be too hot. We purchased two bags of food, one for each kid, and had plenty. We did save some for the giraffe in the walk through area. (More on that later.) We chose to ride the bus vs take our vehicle so I could enjoy the ride as well instead of having to focus on driving. The bus driver was friendly and knowledgeable. He seemed to really enjoy his job! The animals were fun to see, and the kids had a blast feeding them. I want to say the bus ride took approx 1.5 hrs. The walk through part: As others have said, the walk through area was kinda sad. The lion had a tiny little enclosure. There were other animals too, and they also had small enclosures, but really the lion was the saddest part. No room to roam. The giraffes were near and one of them did come over to the fence once he realized there was food to be had. A few people were able to feed and pet him, so that was neat. The giraffes seemed to have a decent amount of grassy area to stretch their legs. Dining facility: Exactly what you'd expect. $10 for a 7" pizza and other prices that were in line with that. We didn't eat anything there but I'm sure if you're starving and didn't bring snacks it would suffice. They did have dippin dots ice cream available for typical zoo pricing. They offer a military/first responder/AAA discount of ~10% I believe.

safari drive through springfield mo

Yellowstone Bear World – Rexburg, ID

Idaho’s most popular wildlife attraction is Yellowstone Bear World . This wildlife safari is often visited by travelers from West Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. As you drive your own vehicle through the park, you’ll encounter the very best Rocky Mountain animals including, elk, bison, moose, mule deer, white-tailed deer, mountain goats, and of course, both American black bear and grizzly bear.

One nice characteristic about this particular safari is that large vehicles, such as RVs and motorhomes are welcome to drive the route. Safaris Near Me >> Midwest

Surprisingly, Ohio hosts some of the most authentic safari experiences that travelers can find in the USA. Just be aware, many parks and outfitters work seasonally.

The Wilds – Cumberland, OH

If you’re an American who will never be able to check an African safari off your bucket list, then this is the travel experience you’ve been looking for. The Wilds is probably one of the most authentic safari experiences available in the USA.

safari drive through springfield mo

Knowledgeable guides take guests on a two-hour adventure through open habitats to see cheetahs, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and much more. The conservation center also has opportunities to make your safari complete, with overnight yurt stays, 3-course dinners, and specialty off-roading drives to scout for animals. For family vacations, there are cabins and a 12-person lodge is also available.

safari drive through springfield mo

Other than hand-feeding the animals, most guests agree that the highlight is sitting around the campfire as night falls, watching the watering hole for wildlife enjoying a bottle of wine.

Generally, safaris operate from May through October, however, there are winter tours too. This would be an amazing honeymoon, engagement, or anniversary trip idea because overnight yurt stays are 21+ only.

African Safari Wildlife Park – Clinton, OH

With the warning of “not for those who like pristine vehicles,” the 100-acre African Safari Wildlife Park offers a chance to come face to face with various hoofed animals. Visitors can self-drive the route as many times as they’d like but the journey is expensive, so be sure to bring a heavy wallet.

Unfortunately, the park only provides one cup of animal feed per group (not per individual) and all other attractions or cups of feed are an additional charge. Visitors can’t help but notice the placement of the car vacuums at the exit for an additional fee of $2.00.

Buffalo Safari Jeep Tours – Custer, SD

One reason travelers decide to take a Buffalo Safari Jeep Tour is to give themselves a break from driving and let someone else play tour guide. Many families appreciate the opportunity to sit back, enjoy the ride, and listen to narration from a local guide.

safari drive through springfield mo

On this 1.5 to 2-hour safari, guests set out in search of buffalo, deer, longhorn sheep, prairie dogs, elk, and pronghorn. Take note, going off-road seems to depend on where the animals are congregating. Therefore, off-roading is not a guarantee. If wildlife is along the main road, that’s where you’ll spend the majority of your time.

Budget Tip: Pair this safari with the Mount Rushmore and Black Hills Tour with Two Meals and a Music Variety Show tour. Stay at the Bavarian Inn , a European-inspired boutique mountain resort.

Eureka Springs Safari Park – Eagle Rock, MO

Offering a 4-mile drive-through safari and a petting zoo, Eureka Springs Safari Park is home to over 500 animals from all over the world, representing 56 species. Simmons Wildlife Park is open from April through October.

The #1 Animal Attraction in Branson!

sloth

Pay a little extra and get a VIP animal encounter, it's worth it! We got to hold a baby kangaroo, baby python and a striped possum. The tram ride was lots of fun getting to feed emus and ostriches, bison, camels, llamas and alpacas. The Tram driver was great. We really enjoyed the entire experience!

tiger

We had the most wonderful experience at Promised Land Zoo. This zoo allows more interaction with the animals. The VIP is worth the extra money. We had the sloth encounter and absolutely loved it. We enjoyed this zoo much more than the large Memphis Zoo. We will definitely be visiting again soon!

Zebra

We had a guided tour ride through the center of the zoo. During the ride, we fed various animals through the window, allowing an up-close view! Near the end of the drive, be sure to stop and get out to see more animals indoors and out. We will definitely go again. The staff are helpful and very friendly!

Giraffe

We took my teenage son to Promised Land Zoo for his birthday and everyone had a fabulous time. The kids enjoyed several hands-on animal experiences. The zoo is very well maintained. We easily spent 2-3 hours there. It is well worth your time and money. We cannot wait to go back!
