Safari Cuisine

Safari Cuisine

Africa is not generally considered a foodie holiday destination, not even on safari. However this is not true for those of us in the know. Not only is Africa home to a mouth watering culinary offering inspired by its rich cultural heritage but boasts some of the most spectacular settings on earth for you to enjoy breakfast, lunch and supper.

Bush breakfast

Breakfast cooked in the bush, away from camp, is a fantastic way to have a pit stop or to end a morning wildlife drive. Despite the lack of a permanent kitchen, and maybe even cooked over an open fire, a typical breakfast will nonetheless be substantial to set you up for the day. These elaborate affairs might include cereals, yoghurt, fruit, juice, eggs, bacon, toast, fried tomatoes and tea & coffee.

On a mobile safari every breakfast is a bush breakfast and chefs are used to minimal equipment, but can still conjure up treats like freshly baked bread.

Snacks for morning break and afternoon break

Long wildlife drives seeking out elusive animals, or waiting and watching by a waterhole, can lead to a thirst and perhaps even rumbling stomachs. Luckily guides will have generally packed teas and coffees for the morning stop and some beers and G&Ts for the ‘sundowners’ to enjoy at a pretty spot around sunset. Chefs will have normally included some yummy snacks as well to soak up the drinks.

Back at camp you can relax for a couple of hours before lunch – usually the lightest meal of the day with fresh bread, salads, meats, cheeses and dips.

Three Course Supper

Returning to camp, you might change before dinner – though safaris are a pretty casual affair. Depending on the country and camp, you’ll either dine individually (South Africa safaris especially and everywhere at the beach), or shared dinner-party style meals with your fellow guests hosted by the camp managers (most other safari areas).

Taking advantage of Africa’s dry weather most suppers are taken alfresco under star-strewn skies with mouth-watering dishes such as “crisp bass with porcini mushrooms and oxtail crust on wilted greens with red wine mushroom sauce”.

Africa is famous for its BBQs (or braai to the South Africans) and there’s a good chance that you’ll encounter one either on safari or during your stay on the beach. Unlike the typical British version there’ll be no sign of single use charcoal filled foil trays and badly cooked sausages!

African seafood

The Indian Ocean laps at Africa’s balmly eastern seaboard, which is home to gorgeous archipelagos, islands and atolls. This coastline offers sun-drenched days, star-lit seafood feasts along with a choice of desert island picnics, and romantic, toes-in-the-sand dinners. With the natural abundance of seafood, you may be forgiven for thinking there won’t be much apart from fish dishes on your plate, but the Indian Ocean islands and coastlines are famous for fusion cuisine from aromatic French-Creole in Mauritius and the Seychelles, to Mozambique’s Portuguese-inspired peri-peri chicken and delicious vegetarian curries.

A 6-Step Guide to Hosting the Ultimate Safari-Inspired Dinner Party

Above is a photo of my family enjoying a traditional South African barbecue!

Nothing is more special to me than celebrating my love for Africa’s enchanting spirit, fantastic cuisine, and exceptional wines with my friends and family. I have so many wonderful memories of hosting backyard safari-inspired barbecues (which are called braais in southern Africa) and rustic Cape Winelands -inspired dinner parties; and I want to share my safari-themed dinner tips with you!

Below is my step-by-step guide for hosting an authentic and beautiful dinner party with some African flair:

1. Spread the word with invitations: Whether you want to buy invitations, create your own, or send them out online, the possibilities are endless. I personally love making my own invitations, using a paper punch (such as the elephant-shaped paper punch from Martha Stewart’s collection ), nice card stock in earth-tone colors, and some ribbon.

And no matter which way you wish to send out your invitations, remember to inform your guests of the theme, and encourage them to go a little “wild” when choosing their attire for the evening.

Below is an example of a card that the Hills of Africa team made as a gift tag (you can use this same idea for creating your invitations):

wine tags

2. Select savory menu items: Influenced strongly by European settlers, cuisine from southern Africa is extremely diverse and full of unique flavors from around the eastern hemisphere.

Some of the staple produce found in traditional southern African cuisine include corn, squash, sweet potatoes, cabbage, and green beans. Africans on the coast incorporate lots of seafood into their diet, which include hake, rock lobster, mussels, and cod. The main cuts of meat found throughout the southern regions of Africa include meat pies (which were inspired by English and Dutch settlers), Boer chicken pie, bobotie, sausage, lamb, ostrich, beef, pork, and frikkadels (which are hamburgers). Many of their dishes are also categorized as bredies, which are stews.

To learn more about the history of South African cuisine, click here .

So, as you can see, there is a wide variety of cuisine you can serve at your safari-inspired dinner party. But to help you whittle down your menu choices, click here for a few of my favorite homemade dishes to cook for friends and family. Below is a photo of one of my husband’s favorites, Chakalaka ( click here for this recipe ).

3. Choose from the best South African wines:  Because South Africa is one of the world’s top wine-producing regions, most wine stores and grocery stores in the United States carry a wide range of South African wines at varying prices.

I have so many favorite South African wines, it’s hard for me to select my favorites (some are actually not exported, so they can only be tasted locally in South Africa ). But, if I had to choose some of my favorite South African wines that can be purchased in the United States, I would have to say Ken Forrester’s Chenin Blanc, Winery of Good Hope’s Bush Vine Pinotage, Bradgate’s Syrah, and Cederberg’s Cabernet Sauvignon (just to name a few!).

4. Decorate with earth tones and textures: The use of stones, wood, burlap, and other rustic materials and fabrics with natural coloring is a great way to add some African inspiration to your décor. And don’t be afraid to add a pop of color using colors inspired by the Maasai people of Kenya . These colors include deep reds, blue, and yellow. Below is a photo of the Maasai to give some inspiration to your color palette!

masai mara

5. Set the mood with music: Almost all African music has a motivational beat that is sure to get your guests moving and shaking. From African pop to Afrobeat and gumboot styles to jazz, Africa is home to some exceptional musical genres that will add some zing to your dinner party. After all, the best way to entertain guests is to engage all five of the senses.

National Geographic has a great list of featured African artists to include on your playlist. Click here to see them .

6. Always add little personal touches:  Create fun wine tags so people know which glass is their glass. You can use the elephant paper punch mentioned above in the invitations section to punch out little elephants and write names on each elephant. You can then attach a string or ring to them so that guests can place them on their wineglass stem.

I also suggest using a traditional African fabric to make napkins, such as batik fabric. You should be able to find some African-inspired fabrics at your local fabric store.

Planning the perfect party doesn’t have to be exhausting! Choosing a theme is half the battle but once you find inspiration for your theme you’ll find your idea will quickly come together. Safari themed birthdays are a great way to get your child’s and their guest imagination moving.

You can make a big impact in a space with decorations that make your guest feel like they just stepped into a jungle. Many kids love animals which makes this such a fun party theme, not to mention it is extremely gender neutral. We have composed 20 ideas and recipes so that you can plan the perfect safari themed party. So grab your binoculars, put on your safari vest and let’s go on this adventure together.

1. DIY Balloon Centerpiece

These balloon centerpieces were initially designed for a pineapple themed party but their tropical themed arrangement would work perfectly for a safari theme too. This step by step tutorial is super easy you’ll have a big impact arrangement in no time at all.

It seems like slime is the latest craze with the kids these days. Glitter slime, neon slime, you name it and there is probably a slime variation of it. The texture alone is probably the most fun part of slime, you can stretch it, pull it, twist it and form it into anything you want.

Why not impress all the kids at your party with sand slime. You could consider making this sand slime to use as an activity in a sensory box depending on the age group or you could make this slime to send home as part of thank you gift to your guests.

Place a secret treasure in the middle and let the kids go on a safari hunt to find the treasure stones in your yard. You could even have them use the binoculars you made in the previous tutorial to scout for their treasures. The rocks are hard enough to keep the trinket inside but are easy enough for younger kids to break open.

Shop SAFARI in my Etsy Shop!

I have no intention of passing myself off as a caterer or master chef at anything, so do not be deceived. None of my parties ever have gourmet food. But, what they ALL have are clever names for everything. Ask anyone, it’s my favorite item on my party checklist: Cleverly Name the Food…

I’m not that excellent at cooking/baking but I excel in punny humor. My ideas for the Safari Party Food was no exception. I also excel in making everyday things that are simple, like cutie oranges fill up an entire food display. Feast your eyes, party animals…

Safari Party Food Ideas | Snacks

We’ll start small and cover the snack first. I went for the whole Market Place theme with good in paper bags. I’ve always loved those scenes in Disney’s Aladdin where the Marketplace vendors offer Jasmin dates and pistachios. I suppose I was channeling my inner Disney with this party setup. The names for the food were fun to do too. Most of the snack food is very simple and can be bought in the bulk foods section of Winco.

Here is my list:

  • Banana pies – Banana Moon Pies
  • Monkey Chow – Banana Chips
  • Snake Eggs – Green Grapes
  • Gorilla Poop – Chocolate covered raisins
  • Giraffe Spots – Rye Chips
  • Banana Treats – Runts Bananas {I bought on Amazon!}
  • Beetle Wings – Lays Potato Chips
  • Tree Roots – Pretzel Sticks
  • Elephant Snacks – Peanuts
  • Zebra Cakes – Zebra Cakes
  • Jaguar Claws – Bugles
  • Grubs – Gummy Worms
  • Animal Crackers – Animal Crackers
  • Lizard Eyes – Hummus

You can find all of my labels available as a digital download on Etsy .

Safari Party Food Ideas | Appetizers

There were a few bigger items that we ate with our Snake Subs. These 2nd level foods took a little more work than just emptying them into a bowl and slapping a cute label on it. So naturally, I recruited my mom, the Original Party High Priestess and Captain of the Pun Team to assist. She made these food items:

  • Lion’s Main – Veggie tray with ranch dip
  • Ladybugs – Caprese Skewers
  • Tiger Cub Cuties – She also drew all these tiger faces!

Safari Foods Ideas | Snake Sub Sandwich

Now for the main course. My entire plan for this food table centered around this giant Snake Sub Sandwich I just had to make. The tricky part was getting it all cut and out the door, then on the table and everyone through the line before the bread got hard. I bought those super soft loaves of fresh-baked bread from Safeway and we cut it up.

I used my acrylic cupcake tower as an elevation and made the snake coil around it. The same roll of brown craft paper I used to make the vines came in super handy! I premeasured my space and rolled up the serving paper for the Snake Bread the day before the party. This way I knew where everything would go and fit.

The snake is all bread {+ a face} and the fixings were brought out last since they’re not on the ice. Here is my list with the Food Names:

  • Provisions – Cheese Slices
  • Too Talky Toucan – Lunchmeat {Roasted Turkey}
  • Wild Boar – Lunchmeat {Ham}
  • Defiant Parrot – Lunchmeat {Rotisserie Chicken}

The Defiant Parrot making a repeat appearance from Cash’s 2nd Pirate Party . Even more fun food names over there! Including Seagull Poop… hmmm… seems to be a theme for the boys’ parties…

Safari Party Food Ideas | Desserts

The look on this little Grub-Eater’s face makes it all worth it. His “Cash is King” Custom Cake Topper from my Etsy Shop is his own design. Roth’s Bakery once again did an amazing job for me on the cake and cupcakes. I always walk in with a list of expectations and they have pulled through every time. We went simple this year with a grassy area for his toy Lion who is also King.

safari menu ideas

For many of the cupcakes, we used a large polka dot circle cupcake Topper in the themed paper. Honestly, I just made as many I could from the scraps of the WILD Banner .

Finally, after the kids located the Elusive Leopard Torch we were able to cut cake and serve the cupcake toppers. You can find these glitter Safari Cupcake Toppers in my Etsy Shop . I offer them in 28 Glitter choices.

safari menu ideas

After all the delicious desserts listed in Part I of my Safari / Jungle Themed First Birthday Party post, it’s time for some appetizers, finger foods and snacks ideas now! As I mentioned in my previous post I wanted to share all food ideas and party decorations in a single post but it got ridiculously long so I split it into four parts:

  • Part I – Dessert Ideas
  • Part II – Appetizers, Finger Foods & Snack Ideas
  • Part III – DIY Decoration Ideas + FREE Printables
  • Part IV – Cheap Party Supplies & Decorations

Going back to this post’s topic now… we served HUNGRY TIGER BITES which were actually my 4-Ingredient Smoked Salmon Cream Cheese Roll-Ups ! Ready in just 10 minutes!

Safari / Jungle Themed First Birthday Party Part II – Appetizers, Finger Foods & Snack Ideas - Hungry Tiger Bites / Tortilla Roll-Ups

I saw a LION FACE MADE OUT OF VEGGIES on Pinterest, showed my husband the photo and asked for his help and this is how it turned out (after taking a few bites of cauliflower) :).

Safari / Jungle Themed First Birthday Party Part II – Appetizers, Finger Foods & Snack Ideas - Lion Face Made Out Of Veggies

The hippos were getting a little hungry so I made a HUNGRY HIPPO DIP. That would be my 5-Ingredient Spinach Sweet Potato Dip that we enjoy as a dip and Daniel as a full meal! We served it with baked pita chips but tortilla chips or crackers are another option.

Safari / Jungle Themed First Birthday Party Part II – Appetizers, Finger Foods & Snack Ideas - Hungry Hippo Dip

And lastly, we had some store-bought snacks:

Safari Theme Party

Mar 25, 2022 by Amber · This post may contain affiliate links · 6 Comments

Planning a Safari Theme Party? I've got all you'll need right here! From the menu, to the cake, to the invitations, I've got all the ideas you'll need for a super fun safari birthday party!

Baby boy in a purple buggy with a green shirt and a huge smile

Please excuse me while I crawl into a cupboard and cry my face off because my sweet little miracle baby is already a year old!

My husband chose the safari birthday party theme, gave me a budget, and away I went planning, preparing, and pinning like cray-zay. Everyone at the party inflated my ego like whoa, swooning about the food, decor, and paying me off for all of my hard work.

Today I'll pay it forward by giving you all of the deets and links I used to make this safari theme party all I wanted it to be. We had somewhere between 40-45 people at the party, and we had the perfect amount of food with zero leftovers.

I will add all of the recipes on one card at the end of the post so you can print them all at once so your own safari theme party will be a super success!

safari theme birthday invitation orange orange background with black animal shadows

  • Invitation Design: You can't have a party without a great invitation. I designed Owen's in Photoshop by downloading a free  African tree brush  pack and a free animal font  as well as a safari-esqe  font. However, this is an older post, so nowadays you can easily design your own invitations on Canva for free or order super cute editable printables from Etsy that you can print from home or have printed professionally.
  • Printing: I had mine printed  for a great price (also try here ) and shipped to me. Try to allow at least 2-3 for shipping if you don't want to pay outrageous shipping charges!
  • Envelopes: You can get envelopes  in an array of colors to match whichever safari party design you choose.

Safari Birthday Party Menu

Planning this safari theme party menu was so much fun! I have some serious back issues so I tried to plan things that were quick, easy, and delicious. I also made myself a strict timeline so I could make and freeze some of the food ahead of time in order to just throw them in the oven the day of the party.

The menu was completely safari themed, and I had such a blast putting everything together. The menu included:

  • Snake Sandwich: Ham & provolone w/ brown sugar mustard & poppy seeds
  • African Meatballs: Asian inspired w/ an African flair
  • Simba's Veggie Tray: Veggie tray made to look like a lion's made
  • Guano Funfetti Dip Funfetti w/ Animal Cookies
  • Elephant Ears Palmiers
  • Deviled Eagle Eggs
  • Fried Ostrich
  • Hippos in a Blanket
  • Gorilla Grape Fruit Tray
  • Chocolate Cat Tails
  • Zebra Cakes
  • Safari Sangria
  • Green Apple Jungle Juice

Yes, it seems like a lot, but remember this safari party menu is really nothing, but finger foods. We had a huuuuuuuge guest list and we had ZERO leftovers. NONE-ZO.

Close up of safari party snake sandwich with olives as eyes and peppers as a tongue

The snake sandwich sliders slithered their way into the stomachs of my guests, and they were an absolute smash.

The recipe is a cinch and you may have even seen them called funeral sandwiches at some point because the original recipe blew up Pinterest several years ago. I've made them a ton, and they are always the first thing to go at a gathering.

African meatballs in a crockpot sprinkled with sesame seeds

The next biggest hit were the meatballs which I adapted from this recipe from Gimme Some Oven as well as this one from The Crockpot Ladies.

These things were incredible!!! I probably ate about 457 of them before I ever served them to my guests. They were more like Asian meatballs rather than Afrian, but whatevs. They were the bomb diggity.

carrots, yellow peppers, and celery surrounding hummus made to look like a lion

Next up was Simba's lion veggie tray. People were so impressed by it , but it really couldn't have been simpler. Some people even commented that they didn't want to eat it because it was a work of art.

funfetti dip topped with blueberry pie filling served with animal crackers

The "guano" funfetti dip was my husband's idea, and I thought it was disgustingly hilarious. Y'all know what guano is, right? #googleit

With our over abundance of blueberries , I couldn't resist, and it ended up being pretty good. Serve them up w/ animal crackers, and it just added to the awesomeness of the safari theme party!

safari menu ideas

Next up were the "elephant ears" or savory palmiers which are a recipe from Ina Garten on the Food Network. These were made with puff pastry, pesto, sun dried tomatoes, and goat cheese. This recipe was one that I made in advance, cut, froze, then baked on the morning of the party.

SAFARI-PARTY

The remainder of the menu was just some basics: deviled eggs , fried "ostrich" (aka fried chicken) from our favorite chicken joint, chocolate covered pretzel rods that looked like tiger, zebra, leopard, and giraffe tails, a fruit tray, and "hippos" in a blanket that I made several days in advance, froze, then reheated on the day of the party.

Owen's 1st Birthday Safari Party-1

For the adults I had a Safari sangria that was completely swoonworthy. I soaked kiwis, watermelon, grapes, strawberries, peaches and plums overnight in half a bottle of Smirnoff Sorbet Light  mango passionfruit vodka then added that to the rest of the drink, and dear heavens I could swim in that stuff all day long.

Owen's 1st Birthday Safari Party-12

Last but not least were the cupcakes! I was so happy with them. First off, the cupcake stand is nothing but cardboard boxes wrapped in dollar store wrapping paper, stacked, and taped together with duct tape. I also hot glued a ribbon around the bottoms of each box.

I got the cupcake toppers (along with the majority of the decorations) from this website and the cupcake wrappers from Walmart.

I made one double batch of my go-to  chocolate lover's cupcakes   (cake only) using Jessica's recipe from How Sweet Eats , and I also made one large batch of vanilla from The Little Kitchen. In total I ended up with about 65 cupcakes.

Owen's 1st Birthday Safari Party-26-2

Owen had a gluten-free, grain-free, refined sugar-free smash cake with coconut whipped cream frosting.

Since Owen has been feeding himself from the beginning, he didn't really go too crazy over his cake. He didn't really smash anything, but we're going to give him the real deal (probably using Jessica's funfetti cupcakes this time) on his actual birthday so maybe he'll tear that one apart instead.

Owen's 1st Birthday Safari Party-91

Owen got a ton of wonderful gifts, but his absolute favorite was the giant teddy bear that is bigger than I am. This teddy bear was given to him by his great aunt who has given one of these to each of the great grandchildren in the family.

Owen can't get enough, and he likes to bite the bear's nose.

Well, I think that's it! I know it's a ton of information, but I'm hoping this post will help a mom like me who wants to throw an amazing safari party without having to scour the internet for every single little detail.

You can just bookmark this page and have all the links, recipes, and ideas stored in one place and make things a little bit easier for yourself.

  • 1 plum sliced
  • 2 kiwis peeled & sliced

  • 1 magnum bottle 1.5 liters Yellowtail Pinot Grigio
  • 1 750ml bottle Yellowtail Moscato
  • 3-4 cans Sprite zero

Instructions

For the snake sandwich sliders:.

  • In a small bowl whisk together the butter, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire, onion powder, and poppy seeds until well combined. Set aside.
  • Place the bottoms of the rolls on a large baking sheet(s) lined with parchment NOTE: IT'S FINE IF THE SANDWICHES TOUCH.
  • Add one small slice of provolone to each bottom, then add two slices of ham on top of the cheese, follow up with another small slice of provolone, then sandwich each slider with the tops of the rolls.
  • Liberally brush the brown sugar mustard on top of each slider, cover with tin foil, then refrigerate for a minimum of 4 hours, but 24 hours is best. Refrigerate the brown sugar mixture in a sealed container.
  • To serve, pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees (F).
  • Re-melt the brown sugar mixture, remove the foil, then liberally brush the tops of each roll again. Pour any remaining sauce over the tops of the rolls, recover with the foil, then bake for 10 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 10 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  • Using one of the rolls from the corner of a package, secure two black olives with toothpicks for the snake's eyes and add one slice of red pepper for the tongue.
  • Place the remaining sliders behind the snake's head in a slithering shape and serve.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine beef, onion, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and breadcrumbs in a large bowl. Using your hands, mix together until well combined. NOTE: DO NOT OVER WORK THE MEAT OR THEY'LL GET TOUGH.
  • Using a small cookie scoop or spoon, shape the mixture into 60-65 balls and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until cooked through. Allow to cool completely.
  • Put baking sheets directly into the freezer and freeze the meatballs for 2 hours then transfer to large freezer bags until party day.
  • On the day of the party, add meatballs to a large crockpot, whisk together pineapple preserves, hoisin sauce, ginger, and sriracha then pour over the meatballs. Cook on low for 4-5 hours, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and cilantro right before serving.

For Simba's lion veggie tray:

  • Spoon the hummus into the middle of a large serving platter and smooth into a circle.
  • Starting from the outside edges of the platter and working in, arrange the celery in a large circle, followed by the bell pepper, and finally the baby carrots.
  • Use two whole olive rings for the eyes, a cherry pepper or tomato for the nose, and sliced olive rings for the mouth and whiskers.
  • Add blueberries and sugar to a large heat safe bowl and microwave for 4 minutes or until hot and bubbly and sugar is dissolved. Cool completely.
  • Pour whipping cream into the bowl of a stand mixer (or use a hand mixer) and beat until stiff peaks form. Stir in the cake mix until there are no lumps left then fold in the yogurt.
  • Transfer to a serving bowl, top with half of the blueberry mixture, and serve with animal crackers of choice.
  • Add kool aid packet and monk fruit to a large pitcher, top with water, and stir until monk fruit is dissolved.
  • Add pineapple juice and lemonade concentrate and stir.
  • Right before serving, pour in gingerale.
  • Add the fruit and vodka to a large plastic container and refrigerate overnight, stirring occasionally.
  • In a large drink dispenser, combine wine, guava nectar, and sprite and stir.
  • Stir in fruit and half of the vodka (or more if you want it super strong) and serve.

Planning a Safari Party: The Food

March 2, 2023, celebrations.

safari menu ideas

I  had so much fun planning Lucy’s 5th birthday party and wanted to share some deeper dive blog posts about different elements of the party. Today, I’m sharing all about the food ! You can find more about the party theme/decor HERE and party activities HERE .

SAFARI PARTY FOOD

My mom and mother-in-law handled all the food for the party and it was great! My mother-in-law blew it out of the park with these creative platters! She created a delicious berry tray with a watermelon elephant , and also lion-shaped veggie and hummus tray . They were SO festive and adorable! My mom also made an animal cracker funfetti + greek yogurt dip , topped with colorful sprinkles. We also had these yummy cheese sliders, plus chips, pita chips, guacamole, and applesauce pouches.

On the food table, I had these Safari Dinner Plates  (featuring so many cute and colorful animals!) and matching Safari Large Napkins .

safari menu ideas

For every birthday, we grab a cake from Whole Foods. In the past (for Winnie’s 1st birthday and Lucy’s 1st birthday party ), I’ve ordered custom cakes, but this time we just picked up a small, simple (but super delicious) cake for singing happy birthday / blowing out candles. I also ordered mini cupcakes from Baked by Melissa. They are bite-sized and perfect for big parties! I used these little animal party toppers to decorate the cupcakes and cake ( here’s another similar option ).

On the dessert table, I set out these adorable Safari Cheetah Plates and small Safari Animal Print Small Napkins .

A Night Safari Dinner Party

Why not plan a dinner party around a safari theme?  I had been to a wedding shower in an event space at a zoo and they did not tie the theme to the zoo at all, despite the fact that we could view the elephants from our location.  I thought how fun it would have been if they had themed the shower as “Suzy is wild about Bob”.  The following year I was asked to plan a thank you event for clients of my husband.  I immediately thought of “we are wild about our clients”.  Unfortunately that event never came to fruition.

Finally the time came when I was planning to host a dinner party for some special friends and I really wanted to do something out of the ordinary.  I don’t really have enough room at my inside dining table for six, so this would be a dinner party out on the lanai.  I decided to set the whole party around a safari theme and spend our entire evening outdoors.

This would be a great place for a few friends to relax together and enjoy the company and the food.  To get inspired I took a trek around Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park.  Disney, of course did such an incredible job not just building, but creating what appears to be a little bit of Africa and Asia right out of the swampy lands of Florida.

I had a basic space that served us well, but I wanted to give it the feeling of one of the exotic African safari resorts you see where guests fall asleep to the sounds of the animals in the jungle.  I looked around my house and began to find elements that I could move outside to give the space more of a feeling of an indoor dining room.  I brought out this bookshelf (yes, I had to hide all the books in a closet for the evening) and began dressing it with appropriate knick knacks.  I arranged this in the corner by the seating area.  This is where we would gather for drinks and appetizers.

At the other end of the lanai I brought out this piece of furniture we use as a bar and created this large, showy arrangement to be a focal point.  I mixed in a few artificial leaves and flowers I had on hand with ferns and palmettos cut in the wilds of Florida and added some of the feathers I have used in Fall arrangements.

I picked up the elephant painting from World Market and hung it on the wall with Command Strips for outdoor use between my piece of furniture and my outdoor lamp which I elevated on a outdoor end table.  Hanging a piece of art really made the outdoors seem like a room within my home.

A piece of a palmetto was also stuck up on the wall with outdoor Command Strips for a little more interest.

For the table centerpiece I used these four black and leopard placemats which I laid out on the table like a runner.  I placed river rocks down the center as if they were a river flowing down the table.  Next, I took five variegated Liriope plants, tied Spanish moss around the pots with raffia and sat them down the center of my table.  I additionally dressed them up with bamboo.  Next I nestled some stately giraffes, an elephant and zebra wooden animals and finished with lots of votive candles.

My table setting was easy to put together with these plates I found at Home Goods.  I saw these and thought they looked very much like the pattern of giraffe fur.  I used chargers which were a nice burlap texture.  The green textured glasses also came from Home Goods.  Black napkins were an easy choice, but I kind of skimped on my napkin rings, using a paper towel tube cut into pieces and covered with animal print duct tape.

When dusk set in, the whole feeling I wanted really enveloped us all as we settled in at the dinner table by candlelight.  I have shared the incredibly easy, yet very delicious  Chicken Curry and Rice  dish I prepared for my guests this evening.  Click on that link for the recipe.

Thanks Lysa. I have had a British Colonial theme in the past which gave me lots of pillows and other figurines to use!

Thanks Karren, You are so right, it truly was beautiful after dark!

You have seriously thought of everything! I love all your sophisticated safari details!

Thanks so much Christine! I have wanted to do this for so long, I had a lot of time to think about the details!

You are so talented! How creative and adorable! Thanks for linking up at OMHG WW this week!

Thank you Alyssa! I will try and stop by again soon!

I love the safari theme for a dinner party! The table runner out of place mats looks great.

Thank you Valerie! At first I was disappointed I didn’t have 6 of the placemats to use, but I think it turned out better using them for a runner, too!

This is fantastic! I would love to go to a party like this and maybe I will host one someday! I love how you found a lot of it at your own house. Thanks for sharing this on Oh My Heartsie Girl Link Up.

I want to be invited to a party like this too, but I have to say, I loved hosting it! I am still holding out for hosting a “Bride is WILD about Groom” bridal shower at the zoo!

Dawn, My guests enjoyed it all! Yes, my secret is out, my husband owned a flower shop when I married him and I went to work with him! I haven’t done it professional for years (and years)! Yes, Home Goods can be dangerous!

I love those plates! They are so cute! Thank you for linking up to Party Time and we hope to see you again next week!

Chloe, I’m a new admirer of your safari setting. Kudos!!! Love it! I have been searching and searching for inspiration to do a safari setting, comfy and cozy in a home and not in a themed wedding space. “Your entire atmosphere is right on” I know yours was for a dinner party but it does not look “planned,” it gives the feeling of everyday living. I love this. Hope you don’t mind but I’ll have to adopt your ideas with credit to you of course. Thanks for sharing.

Linda, I am so honored by your kind compliments. I appreciate that you want to adopt my ideas into your own party! Have fun and make sure you share the pictures with me! Hugs! Chloe

Thanks for stopping b y Chanel. I have had these for several years. I think I bought them at Home Goods, but I could be wrong about that. Good luck for your search!

I’m hearing jungle drums as I write. Chloe, WOW I really felt in the jungle. Just beautiful and so creative. You thought of everything.

What fun Chloe! You really went all out and really created a safari feeling experience! Love the focal point arrangement, beautiful! I know you’re guests were completely charmed, and that you all had a wonderful time!

Wow, Chloe, your creativity never ceases to amaze me. The entire scene looks authentically safari-like. The details are crazy good, and relatively simple as you described them. I’d feel pretty special if that atmosphere had been created for a dinner party for me!

Chloe, I have always loved safari themes. Who wouldn’t love to have dinner at this beautiful and well execute tabletop?!!

Usually I am always appreciating the talent that goes into executing a beautiful tablescape. However, this time I was taken mostly by the decor. The details that went into turning the place into an indoor/outdoor exotic setting. I particularly loved the evening pictures. When I saw the final product all I could think up was: ” At what time is dinner.” I know that your guests must have gain an enjoyable experience. It was a fantastic job .

Thank you so much Edmee! It was a lovely evening with friends. My favorite thing is setting a theme for my dinner parties and this one was particularly fun!

Food on Safari

Product Manager, Africa

When most travelers think of safari, wildlife takes center stage. Whether you are on a mission to witness the Great Migration, see the Big 5, or spot a species you’ve never seen before, you are excited for the animals that await.  But there is much more to a safari than wildlife and it is these experiences that make the journey truly unforgettable.

One particular component that is often overlooked but greatly contributes to one’s overall experience is the cuisine. Initial assumptions are that food on safari is very basic when in fact it’s the complete opposite and for most, some of the best food they’ve ever eaten. Even in the remote wilderness, there are classically trained chefs serving meals that could be on the menu at a 3-star Michelin rated restaurant.

safari menu ideas

While the food is different from camp to camp, there are generally similar mealtimes and styles. For example, a typical day on safari would include the following:

  • Coffee and/or tea with biscuits or cookies brought to your tent as part of your wakeup call.
  • A continental breakfast (cereals, granola, fresh fruit, yogurt, and baked goods) offered before leaving camp for the morning.
  • A coffee/tea stop during your morning activity, also accompanied with biscuits or cookies.

safari menu ideas

  • Hot breakfast/brunch served upon returning to camp, which usually includes a choice of eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes, and toast.
  • High tea, complete with iced tea & coffee and both sweet & savory baked items, offered before your afternoon activity.
  • A sundowner stop for drinks and a few small appetizers.
  • Dinner, back at camp, which is generally a three-course meal including dessert.

Needless to say, you will never go hungry on safari!

safari menu ideas

It may be surprising due to the camps’ remote locations,  but I’m consistently impressed by the food’s freshness, along with the quality and care that goes into its preparation. Not only is everything, even down to the bread served, homemade, but much of the produce comes directly from camp gardens, where a wide variety of vegetables and herbs are grown. Some properties even have their own chickens and cows to provide fresh eggs and milk. For those items that cannot be harvested on site, camps try to buy local products as much as possible.

These decisions and the effort put into creating every meal is so thorough and can truly be tasted in the finished product. Similar attention and thoughtfulness are paid to those guests with food restrictions & allergies, and safari camps can accommodate many different dietary needs.

safari menu ideas

What makes the cuisine on safari so interesting is that even though there is a basic outline for meals, every camp puts their own spin on it and some even offer special dining experiences. One I would highly recommend is an interactive chef’s table. I was able to enjoy this for dinner one evening on my most recent trip to Africa and it was truly a highlight. The meal was served in an outdoor kitchen where the chef stood front and center preparing a six-course tasting menu, with wine pairings for each course. Even if you don’t consider yourself a foodie, being able to interact with the chefs (who you normally don’t even get the chance to meet) and learn more about them, as well as the food, is a memorable experience (not to mention the six-course meal I enjoyed was hands down the best I’ve ever had on safari!).

safari menu ideas

Another special dining encounter available at some camps is cooking a meal with culinary students at an on-site cooking school. Locals between the ages of 17 -27 in the nearby community can apply for the training program, which is funded by the camp. Those who are accepted then attend classes at the test kitchen. Following graduation, the camps work with the students to find them job placements, ideally as employees in their own kitchens. While participants are still going through the program, guests have the chance to cook a meal and learn from these chefs in training. Afterwards, you sit down and enjoy the meal you prepared together. This is a great way to experience the culinary side of safari while also learning about the neighboring communities and local people.

Most of these interactive dining experiences are limited to certain properties, so if any are of interest to you, I recommend speaking to your consultant about which camps offer them.

safari menu ideas

Finally, there are even options to dine out in the bush, appreciating the breathtaking views and sights with each bite. Whether it’s a champagne brunch after an exhilarating sunrise hot air balloon flight, or a peaceful starlit dinner under the canopy of a baobab tree with the sounds of Africa in the background, bush meals are a must during your stay. There are also some lodges that offer a similar dining experience right in camp, from within a boma, or large outdoor dining area where guests gather to enjoy a meal together. This is usually set up for dinner with tables surrounding a roaring campfire and more traditional African dishes are prepared. It’s the quintessential safari dining experience.

Food on safari really is anything but basic and no matter which dining experiences you have, I promise you are in for a treat!

Jungle Fruit and Veggie Trees Snacks – Safari Themed Food

These jungle fruit and veggie trees are such a fun snack to make for your safari party theme food, and also for watching Jungle Book movies! If you are looking for Disney’s Jungle Book food ideas, this is the perfect one.

Disney's Jungle Book Food Ideas - Fruit and Veggie Trees Snack

Fun jungle-themed snacks

Disney's The Jungle Book Diamond Edition BluRay DVD Movie

What classic film combines adventure, fun, a jungle, and teaches the ‘bare necessities’ of life in a Disney fashion? Yep, it’s Disney’s The Jungle Book ! The 1967 favorite has been re-mastered in high definition, and is available now on Blu-Ray and DVD!

Jungle Book Food Ideas – Fruit and Veggie Trees Snack

The kids are pretty excited, I jazzed up the movie a bit, explained the film’s story as one of my childhood favorites and they couldn’t wait to see it! We stopped by Walmart to grab a copy of the film, the Blu-Ray combo pack Diamond Edition has both DVD and Blu-ray discs and Walmart is the only place that you can receive a free Jungle Book lunch box with purchase. It’s gonna be a jungle movie night!

Disney's The Jungle Book in Walmart stores

Jungle fruit and veggie trees snack

For a little jungle safari snack during the movie, I decided to put together a fun, healthy recipe that is themed for the Jungle Book movie. We grabbed some fresh produce and supplies while we were at Walmart. Sure, popcorn and soda are good, but can we get something with a little less sugar? Make these fun jungle trees with fruits and vegetables for your Jungle Book movie night!

How to make these jungle-themed snacks

Ingredients you will need:

  • Mini plastic cups
  • Jungle safari printed paper (I chose leopard)
  • Blueberries

Jungle Party Decor, Small cups with leopard wrap

Step 1: Make the jungle-printed party cups

Making these fruit and veggie trees was pretty simple. Start by cutting out a few strips of your safari jungle printed paper, wrapping them around the mid-section of each plastic cup. Secure each strip of paper with a dot of glue. I decided to cut mine a little curved, like cupcake wrappers, so they’d fit nicely.

Jungle Party Ideas, how to make vegetable jungle trees

Step 2: Assemble the tree trunks in each cup

Wash all of your fruits and veggies, cut your apples into thin slices, and soak them in cold salted water to prevent browning. Next, cut 3 – 4  inch pieces of carrots and celery to use as tree trunks. Put them into the center of the cup, then add blueberries surrounding the tree trunk to secure it, a little over halfway full.

Step 3: Add the jungle tree leaves on top

Insert a toothpick down the middle of the tree trunk, leaving the top half of the toothpick out and exposed. Take your thin apple slices, blot them dry, and arrange about 6 – 7 onto each tree, pressing the ends of them into the toothpick one by one and fanning them out evenly.

Safari Party Ideas, Fruit and Vegetable Jungle Trees

That’s it! Simple, isn’t it? We had a great time watching the movie and devouring these jungle trees. This is one snack that I don’t mind them indulging in! We hope this becomes one of your favorite jungle party food ideas.

Jungle Party Food Ideas, Jungle Fruit and Veggie Trees

Enjoy this Jungle Book-themed food!

Whether you are watching the Jungle Book movie or having a jungle safari party, these jungle book fruit cups are tons of fun to make, and healthy to eat. This tropical honey pineapple fruit salad might be another fun fruit idea to serve at your safari parties.

Pick up the Diamond Edition of Disney’s The Jungle Book Diamond Edition Blu-ray and DVD , recently released from the Disney movie vault. I am thrilled that my kids can grow up with the same classic movies that I did as a kid. They just love Baloo and the ‘bare necessities’ song. We had a great movie night together, I live for these family moments!

Deanna, these are so clever! A perfect #junglefresh snack! #client

These are so cute. It is a surefire way of getting picky kids to try their fruits and veggies and eat more!

How to Throw a Progressive Dinner

How to organize and throw a progressive dinner party! A progressive dinner, also called a safari supper, is a great way to get to know your neighbors.

Last weekend, I participated in our annual neighborhood progressive dinner. Today I’m sharing how ours is organized, what we served, and the recipes I used.

How to throw a progressive dinner

Ice Breaker

Cranberry orange pineapple punch, what is a progressive dinner.

A progressive dinner is a fun and interactive way to enjoy time with friends and family. It involves going to different houses for each course of the meal – starting at one house for an appetizer, then progressing to another for the main course, and finally ending at another for dessert.

Often, each person or family will bring a certain dish, or everyone can contribute food from their own homes. This allows guests to sample new dishes from different people and make new connections among peers through cooking and bringing traditional recipes.

How to Plan and Execute a Progressive Dinner

Recruit hosts.

Our neighborhood has a social committee, so the social chair put a call out for progressive dinner hosts in our private neighborhood Facebook group. Those interested replied, and from there those who were serious met to discuss potential dates and themes.

The way we did it last year and this year was that the host of the course also makes the food. But we’re thinking of changing this for next year because it’s expensive and a lot of work for one household to take on.

Let’s say you want to participate, but you hate cooking, you could volunteer to host a course at your house, while another neighbor or two makes the food and brings it over. Or maybe you don’t want to host or cook, but want to contribute in some way. You could give money for or provide the plates and napkins.

Progressive dinner - appetizer house.

Pick a Date

Last year, a poll was put up in our neighborhood group for everyone to vote on the best days that worked for them. This year, the progressive dinner hosts selected a day that worked for all the hosts, not the guests.

I’d suggest having a progressive dinner during warmer weather. Spring, summer, or fall would be great. There’s a greater chance for better weather in those seasons (i.e. no snow), people are less likely to wear big coats, and if you have an outdoor space, you can utilize that instead of having a bunch of people inside your house.

Choose a Theme

When it comes to the food, it’s good to pick a theme. Last year, the progressive dinner theme was Italian. (My antipasto skewers would’ve been perfect.) This year, it was southern comfort food. Be creative! Around the World would be a fun theme. There’s also Mexican, American, Asian, Mediterranean, Indian, German, French, British, Irish, American comfort foods, etc.

Invitations

The neighborhood social chair created a post announcing the progressive dinner in our neighborhood Facebook group. This year, a progressive dinner Facebook event was also created so people could RSVP, giving us a head count. We also create and distribute paper invitations in everyone’s mailboxes because not everyone is on Facebook or in the Facebook group. We had around 36 people RSVP and attend the progressive dinner.

Kids or No Kids?

In our neighborhood, the progressive dinner is an adult-only event. Last year and this year, one of our amazing neighbors has organized group babysitting at her house. She gets a headcount and hires 2-3 babysitters to watch the kids. She also orders pizza and gets drink for the kids. When the kids arrive, they each get a name tag on their back to help the babysitters identify them. A flat rate is paid per child for the pizza, drinks, and babysitter. Parents can add in extra money for the babysitter if they want.

Progressive Dinner Schedule of Events

Last year, there were four stops– appetizer, salads, entree, and dessert. This year, there were three official stops– appetizer, entree, and dessert. We also have an after party at the babysitting house (we play games and drink adult beverages).

The schedule went like this:

6-7 PM … appetizer 7-8 PM … entree 8-9 PM … dessert 9-??? … after party

When everyone arrives at the appetizer house, they write their name on a name tag and stick it onto their shirt.

At the appetizer house, we do an ice breaker activity. Since our neighborhood is newer and smaller, the host printed out a blanket lot map of our neighborhood and provided pens. We went around meeting our neighbors and asking what lot they lived on. Then we’d write their names on that lot. This was a great activity and allowed us to find out where everyone lived and make small talk (i.e. “Oh, you live in the same model of house as us! How are you liking the layout?”).

This year, the ice breaker was writing celebrity names on large labels, putting one on each person’s back, and then the person had to ask neighbors yes or no questions, attempting to figure out who their celebrity was.

The Food & Drinks

This year’s theme for our neighborhood progressive dinner was southern comfort food so our menu reflected that.

Progressive dinner. Various foods in white serveware on a kitchen island.

Appetizer / Starter

I wanted to stick to finger foods to decrease on the amount of utensils needed. Although I did put out some plastic forks. I made southern-style deviled eggs, pimento cheese with assorted crackers and raw vegetables, and jalapeño cheddar cornbread with butter. Each house also serves drinks, so I made an alcoholic Southern Comfort punch, a nonalcoholic cranberry orange pineapple mocktail, and I also put out a pitcher of water.

Entree / Main Course

The entree house served chicken as the main dish with mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and biscuits with butter and assorted jams. They also had 3-4 boxed wines and water.

The dessert stop served peanut butter pie, mixed berry cobbler, and peach cobbler with ice cream. They served coffee. There was also a mini bar set up with some alcohols and mixers.

If you’re looking for a cobbler recipe, I highly recommend my peach cobbler .

Progressive dinner desserts in individual cups

Labeling the Food & Drinks

I’m very pro-food tent cards. It’s so much easier for people to read what food is in front of them instead of guessing or asking the host.

I quickly designed my food tents in Photoshop (you can use Word if you don’t have PS), printed them on card stock, and cut and folded them. These are especially important when it comes to the drinks.

If you’re serving an alcoholic punch, note that on the food tent. At the progressive dinner last year, the appetizer house had a punch. I didn’t think it was alcoholic because I couldn’t taste the alcohol and had taken a couple sips when, in front of everyone during the welcome and introduction, the host announced that the punch was spiked. I was 7 months pregnant so I casually, and not awkwardly at all, handed my punch over to Brad.

Southern Comfort Food Appetizer Recipes

When I posted about the neighborhood progressive dinner on Instagram, people asked me for recipes. So here are the recipes I used, along with the modifications I made.

To save money on food, I shopped at Costco and Aldi.

Pimento Cheese

I used this recipe . I cut the red pepper flakes in half because I didn’t want to make it too spicy for people. In order to serve 36 people, I doubled the recipe. I also bought a 2 pound block of cheddar cheese and hand shredded the pound of cheese I used in the pimento cheese recipe. I patted the pimentos dry before adding them to the rest of the ingredients. Then, I pulsed all the ingredients together in my food processor.

pimento cheese in a large bowl with bowls of vegetables and crackers

Jalapeño Cheddar Cornbread

I used this recipe . Instead of 1/3 cup green onions, I used 1/2 cup. I used 3 large eggs instead of 3 extra large eggs. Instead of 2 cups of milk, I used one cup of whole milk and one cup of low fat buttermilk. I was afraid the cornbread would be too spicy with 3 tablespoons of jalapeños, but it turned out fine. I hand shredded the other pound of cheddar cheese and used it to top the two pans of cornbread.

jalapeno cheddar cornbread

Southern Style Deviled Eggs

I used this recipe . I patted the sweet relish dry to keep the filling from getting too runny. I tweaked it a little to taste because I had to multiply it by 4 since I used 30 eggs. Since I was cooking so many eggs, I used my Instant Pot. I put the eggs on the grate that came with the Instant Pot, filled the pot with 1 cup of water, cooked on manual for 5 minutes, let them sit in the Instant Pot for 5 minutes while the pressure released (I set a timer), and then I let them soak for 5 minutes in an ice water bath. I cooked 10 eggs at a time in the Instant Pot.

southern style deviled eggs

Southern Comfort Punch Cocktails

Everyone LOVED this punch! I used this recipe . I modified it by adding ~10 maraschino cherries and about 1/3 cup of the juice. To keep the punch cooler, I threw my oranges and lemon in the freezer for a few hours. Right before the dinner started, I added the 7Up, and then I sliced the fruits and put them in the punch.

southern comfort alcoholic punch in a drink dispenser

I received a lot of compliments on this punch as well. There were just more boozers than non-boozers who attended the progressive dinner.

4 cups cranberry juice 4 cups orange juice 4 cups pineapple juice 2 liters 7Up or Sprite 6 oz grenadine garnish with sliced oranges and/or cranberries

Looks like lots of fun! What did you use to make the little signs with the name of each dish? I’ve always wanted to do that when I host a buffet.

I created them in Photoshop– turned the page horizontal and laid out two food tents on each page. I used my paper cutter to cut them to size. Then, I folded them in half. 🙂

Thank you for bringing back grand memories for me. My Grandmother who lived in a cul-de-sac in Davenport Iowa threw parties just like this and I’m talking 1950s. There were 8 houses and all of them participated. Grandma had the biggest yard for summer dinners and a huge basement converted into a bar/dance room for winter and of course her house was the “after” party.

That sounds like so much fun! I hope you have some photos of those parties because I’m sure everything was fabulous.

My Mom’s family is getting together this spring. We rented some cabins all on the same street and we’re going to have a Progressive Dinner one night. Our house is salads and the theme Italian, so sadly I can’t use any of your recipes here for it. But I do want to try that Southern Comfort punch!

The antipasto skewers are basically salad on a stick! Hah! 🙂 The SoCo punch was so good! It’s kinda dangerous though because you can’t taste the SoCo, but there’s a 750mL bottle in there.

That sounds like so much fun! Would you like to adopt me?

For the punch what alachol do you use?

The recipe is linked.

Safari Snack Ideas: Healthy and Delicious Options for Your Adventure

Venture into the wild world of safari snack ideas, where taste meets adventure in every bite.

Embarking on a safari adventure calls for the right kind of sustenance. Whether you’re spotting the Big Five in Africa or exploring the wilds of the Australian Outback , having the perfect snacks on hand can make all the difference.

This article will guide you through a selection of tasty, nutritious, and travel-friendly snack ideas that are perfect for your next safari. From protein-packed treats to keep you energized, to light bites that won’t weigh you down, we’ve got you covered.

So, let’s dive in and discover how to make your safari a delicious experience as well as a thrilling one. Stay tuned for all the details.

mixed nuts

High in protein, fiber, and healthy fats, mixed nuts are the ideal compact and mess-free snack. They come in a variety of combinations — almonds, cashews, pecans, pistachios, and walnuts, among others — providing a range of flavors and textures to keep your palate interested.

Besides, they’re rich in antioxidants and beneficial nutrients, making them not only a tasty, but also a healthful choice for a safari snack . Portioned correctly, they can provide sustained energy, without taking up too much space in your snack pack.

If you prefer a bit of sweet or spicy kick, options with honey-roasted or chili-flavored varieties are available. Just remember to keep an eye on portion sizes, as the calories can accumulate fast.

Dried Fruits

dried fruits

Smithsonian’s National Zoo asserts that dried fruits are an ideal choice for safari snacks. Why? Let’s explore their magic.

1. Naturally Sweet : They contain the same nutrition as fresh fruits but in a compact package. Sweet, chewy, and flavorful, they can calm your sweet cravings in healthier ways.

2. Long Shelf Life: A key advantage is that they don’t spoil easily. They can survive through heat, making them a fitting option for hot safari days.

3. Easy to Carry: Lightweight and non-messy, they fit perfectly in your safari snack bag.

4. Nutrient-Dense: Bursting with essential nutrients like vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants, they provide a quick source of energy during long safari treks.

Try mixing varieties like apricots, raisins, pineapple, banana, and cherries for a diverse and tempting snack pack. Remember, moderation is key due to their high sugar content.

jerky

Crafted typically from beef, although varieties made from turkey, salmon, and other meats are increasingly common, jerky emerges as a quintessential snack for a safari adventure. The low-moisture content of this food item makes it long-lasting, resisting spoilage for extended periods, thereby making it ideal for packing on an outdoor expedition.

For the health-conscious traveler, the low-fat, high-protein composition of jerky is certainly a bonus. One ounce can deliver up to 10g of protein , keeping energy levels high and sustaining the body through long safari days.

Jerky also comes in a wide variety of flavors, with options ranging from smoky barbeque and rich teriyaki to spicy chili . Falling short on taste is not an option here. Compact and easy-to-pack, it is designed for road trips, hiking, or that next African safari. Do remember, however, balance is key. Consume jerky in moderation due to high-salt content .

With a plethora of brands offering their own twist on this beloved snack, your travel snack bag just gets more exciting. Choose one that aligns with your dietary preferences and don’t forget to enjoy the savory taste of jerky as you admire the majestic wildlife on your safari journey.

Granola Bars

granola bars

Renowned for their long shelf life and easy portability, these compact snacks are loaded with oats, nuts, and dried fruits offering a balanced blend of carbohydrates, protein, and fiber.

They can be made at home, enabling control over ingredients for dietary restrictions or preferences.

Opt for granola bars with low sugars and high protein for sustained energy, perfect for those long safari treks.

Making sure to seal them in airtight containers or ziplock bags keeps them fresh and prevents them from getting crushed in your bag.

rice cakes

Light, airy, and low in calories , rice cakes are a fantastic snack choice.

These puffed grains come in various flavors, providing a versatile base for many nutritious add-ons.

Spread a layer of natural peanut butter atop for a protein-packed snack , or perhaps a dollop of low-fat cottage cheese sprinkled with chia seeds to make a fiber-filled safari delight .

With their long shelf life and ability to withhold the warm temperatures, rice cakes stand as an optimal choice for long days in the wild.

Delight in their crisp texture and subtle flavor, perfectly satisfying without overwhelming the palate.

Fresh Fruits

fresh fruits

When it comes to an on-the-go snack, nothing beats the delightfully sweet and hydrating nature of fresh fruits. They are lightweight, easy-to-carry, and require no preparation or refrigeration.

Apples and oranges , with their protective skins, make perfect choices. Not to mention, bananas are conveniently pre-packaged in their peels and can curb hunger pangs effectively due to their high fiber content.

Berries packaged in a sturdy container not only tantalize taste buds but offer a delicious dose of antioxidants.

Lastly, stone fruits like peaches or plums bring diversity in flavor while being equally nourishing. Mildly acidic, they refresh the palate and complement other snacks wonderfully.

Crackers and Hummus

crackers and hummus

Packaged in separate, small containers, these two go hand-in-hand. The creamy, nutrient-rich hummus , woven with rich flavors of garlic and tahini , contrasts delightfully with the crunchiness of the cracker .

Opt for whole grain crackers for a boost in fiber and essential nutrients .

Are you seeking variety? Consider flavored hummus such as roasted bell pepper or pine nut .

This snack won’t just appease your hunger, but will also maintain healthy blood sugar levels throughout your safari.

pretzels

With their delightful crunch and a pleasant hint of salt, pretzels offer an ideal combination of convenience and taste. Available in countless shapes and sizes – traditional knotted, sticks, pretzel thins or even filled with peanut butter – there’s a variant to suit every palate.

They’re not just a tasty nibble, but also a source of enriched grains. Packing them up for a safari ensures you have an easy-to-carry, non-perishable, and nice-to-share snack.

For those wanting a twist, whole grain versions or spiced options can add a dash of gourmet to your safari snack stash, while still maintaining their core virtues of practicality and longevity.

Just remember to balance the salt intake with sufficient hydration to keep yourself refreshed throughout the adventure!

Cheese Sticks

cheese sticks

Appealing in their simplicity and portability, these protein-packed delights are an ideal snack option during safari expeditions. The beauty of cheese sticks lies in the variety available. You might opt for a classic mozzarella stick, or branch out to a more robust cheddar.

They are compact, lightweight, and require no additional utensils, making them an extremely convenient on-the-go snack. Equally vital, they offer a substantial protein hit, keeping energy levels high during your exploration.

Importantly, consider the type of cheese and temperature conditions to ensure the sticks remain fresh and enjoyable throughout your safari adventure. Avoid soft cheeses that can spoil quickly; harder cheeses typically fare better in warmer environments.

trail mix

Packed with energy-dense ingredients, a trail mix can keep you fueled for your safari adventure. The beauty of this snack is its customization – you can toss in your favorite nuts such as almonds , cashews , or peanuts for a protein punch.

Seed varieties like sunflower or pumpkin seeds add a unique texture while boosting the nutritional profile. Dried fruits like raisins , cranberries , or apricots offer a sweet and tart counterpoint.

Chocolate or yogurt-covered items provide a dessert-like treat, but remember, moderation is key to avoid excess sugars. Similarly, a sprinkle of granola or a handful of popped popcorn can bulk up your mix while adding a wholesome, satisfying crunch.

It’s recommended to avoid overly salty or spicy items, as these can lead to increased thirst. Pre-portioning your trail mix into small bags or containers can prevent overeating by providing controlled, satisfying servings.

Dark Chocolate Bars

dark chocolate bars

A favorite among adventurers and epicureans alike, dark chocolate bars boast a wealth of benefits. When consumed in moderation, this rich, bittersweet treat can satiate sweet cravings while providing a quick energy boost, perfect for those long safari treks. Thanks to its high antioxidant content, it’s not only delicious but also offers potential health benefits.

Its durability makes it a top choice for safari goers. No need for refrigeration, accessible, and compact; it’s an item that easily fits into any snack pack. For an added twist, consider varieties infused with nuts or fruits. These versions pack in additional nutritional punch, making them an even smarter choice for sustained energy.

Remember, the higher the cocoa content – ideally above 70% – the more health benefits you can garner. However, due to its strong flavor, it might be an acquired taste for some. But for chocolate lovers, it’s the perfect pick-me-up during a day full of wildlife spotting and adventure.

Mini Sandwiches

mini sandwiches

Their versatility is what makes them such a top choice for safari snacks. Opt for whole wheat bread to keep satiated for longer.

Combine lean meats like turkey or chicken with a slice of low-fat cheese for a delicious protein-filled snack.

For a vegetarian option, try peanut butter with banana or cucumber with cream cheese .

Remember to pack these bite-sized delights in an insulated cooler bag to ensure freshness throughout your safari adventure.

Hence, they are not only convenient and easy to eat, but also provide nutritional benefits to keep you energized on your trip.

Protein Bars

protein bars

Packed with essential nutrients and available in a variety of flavors, protein bars serve as a delectable and convenient snack for on-the-go adventurers. Take note of these points:

  • They offer a quick energy boost: Due to their high protein content, these bars provide a much-needed burst of energy, vital during an intense safari.
  • Portability is key: Chunky yet lightweight, they are simple to pack and don’t take up much room.
  • Variety: From chocolate to fruit, peanut butter to café mocha, the range of flavors ensures there’s a bar to suit every taste.
  • Satiety: Protein bars keep hunger at bay for longer periods, reducing the temptation to snack incessantly.
  • Dietary considerations: Many are also available in gluten-free, nut-free, vegan, and low sugar varieties, catering to all dietary requirements.

Veggie Sticks

veggie sticks

Rich in essential vitamins and nutrients, these crunchy delights are both colourful and refreshing. In terms of convenience, they’re unbeatable!

Simply cut your favorites like carrot , cucumber , red or yellow bell pepper , and celery into stick shapes and you’re ready to go.

For longevity during your safari, consider blanching harder vegetables like the carrots and broccoli .

This simple process involves briefly boiling the veggie sticks, then immediately plunging them into ice water.

It helps to retain color and nutrients while making them a touch softer for easier snacking.

To keep them crisp, pack a cooler or insulated bag.

Paired with a dip such as peanut butter or hummus , they provide a perfect balance of crunch and creaminess, combining for an enjoyable snack experience during your adventurous day out.

Seaweed Snacks

seaweed snacks

Packed with an abundance of nutrients including iodine , calcium , and antioxidants , seaweed snacks offer a healthy nosh choice for your safari trip.

These lightweight, biodegradable packets are easy to carry and require no refrigeration.

For the adventurers with a discerning palate, they offer an astounding umami taste , a delightful flavor associated with rich, savory foods.

Whether you prefer them seasoned or plain, these crunchy snacks satiate your munching needs and contribute to a balanced diet.

Despite their novelty, they uphold the tradition of convenient, travel-friendly food quite impressively.

Energy Balls

energy balls

Packed with nutrients, these small yet mighty snacks are ideal for on-the-go noshing. Combining ingredients like oats , cashews , dates , chia seeds , and flaxseeds , they provide a well-rounded mix of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats.

The natural sugars from the fruits coupled with the sustained energy from the nuts make them a longer-lasting energy source than processed snacks. Plus, their size makes them incredibly travel-friendly.

Most recipes require no baking, only a food processor to combine the ingredients until they form a sticky mixture. Rolled into bite-sized balls, they require minimal storage space in your safari bag.

Notably, they are customizable to suit individual preferences – add some cacao powder for a chocolatey twist or a dollop of peanut butter for added creaminess.

Banana Chips

banana chips

Adding a tropical twist to your safari adventure, these crunchy, sweet treats are not only portable but also a fine source of essential nutrients like potassium , fiber , and even some Vitamin C . Typically made by frying or dehydrating slices of banana, they tend to retain much of their original fruit’s nutrition while adding a satisfying crispness.

Their lightweight, non-perishable nature makes them effortless to pack and transport in your snack bag. Not to forget, they’re a great option for those with dietary restrictions: gluten-free , vegan , and nut-free . For an extra punch of flavor, you can find varieties dusted with cinnamon or dipped in dark chocolate. Just be conscious of the sugar content, particularly in commercially packaged chips. As a top tip, look for those labelled “unsweetened” or make your own at home for a healthier version.

Perfect for a quick bite or as part of a trail mix, banana chips are a refreshingly sweet crunch amidst the exciting wildlife encounters.

Sunflower Seeds

sunflower seeds

Laden with magnesium to help ease stress, and brimming with heart-healthy fats, these small seeds can be a nutritional powerhouse. Apart from being a source of Vitamin E , sunflower seeds also contain a good amount of fiber that can help keep you full for longer.

They are also easily portable and lightweight, perfect for an on-the-go snack during a safari. You can munch on them raw or roast them with a dash of salt to bring out a delectable toastiness. With the variety of flavors available in stores today, ranging from spicy to sweet, there’s a type of seed to suit every palate.

Additionally, as a bonus, their shells can be discarded as biodegradable waste, leaving minimal trace of your snack on the beautiful safari terrain. The fact that they’re compact and require no refrigeration makes them one of the ideal snacks to carry on your adventure.

So, pack a bag of sunflower seeds on your next safari, enjoy the crunch, taste, and the health benefits they offer. Not only are you nourishing your body with essential nutrients, but you’re also respecting Mother Nature by choosing a snack that leaves no trace.

popcorn

Light, airy, and easy to pack, popcorn is a satisfying snack option on safari trips. It’s an excellent source of whole grains that provide long-lasting energy.

Being low in calories, it also ensures you’re not heavy on your feet during those in-depth exploration treks. Popcorn also comes in an array of flavors; sweet , salty , or even cheese , you can find one to satisfy every palate.

Not only is it delicious, but also it’s convenient to eat on-the-go. Its minimal packaging waste makes it an environmentally friendly choice. Just remember, avoid the extra buttery kinds as they might leave a greasy residue and result in unwanted attention from wildlife!

Oatmeal Cookies

oatmeal cookies

Perfect for those with a sweet tooth, oatmeal cookies are a great pick. They’re versatile, allowing for a mix of ingredients such as raisins , nuts , or chocolate chips . The primary ingredient, oats , is a well-known source of fibre that aids in digestion and keeps you full for longer.

In addition to being delicious, these cookies are relatively easy to pack and carry without much hassle.

For a healthier twist, choose oatmeal cookies made with whole grains and low sugar content . They should still give you that much-needed energy boost during a safari adventure without the worry of a sugar crash.

Pre-packaged or homemade, both are suitable choices with their own advantages; pre-packaged cookies offer convenience, while homemade ones give you control over what goes into them.

Just remember to pack them in a sturdy, airtight container to maintain their freshness throughout your safari.

Come dine with me: the return of the safari supper

safari menu ideas

Share the love

safari menu ideas

It was big in the 50s and 60s but cooking at home for groups of friends, neighbours and strangers has made a comeback.

The past few years have seen a number of food revivals – offal, gleaning, baking. And you can add the safari supper to that list now.

Safari suppers were popular during the 1950s and 60s but then died something of a death. The success of TV show Come Dine With Me has almost certainly played a part in this renaissance.

The revival seems to have happened in two very different ways: in rural areas as a charity fundraiser, and in cities as a way for young, career-focused singletons to meet new people.

Having not been a young singleton for a while, I signed my wife and I up for a rural fundraiser.

How it works

A safari supper is a complex beast to organise and the rules can vary according to who’s organising it.

The way it worked on my evening was that all the participants gathered first at a house for a pre-dinner drink. Envelopes were then dished out, giving each pair the address where their starter course would be served.

After the starter (baked camembert with a cranberry sauce accompaniment, in case you’re wondering), envelopes were then dished out with the location of the main course.

Now this is where it gets complicated for the organisers, as the ultimate aim is for no two pairs to eat more than one course together, so you eat with a new batch of people each time.

As it turns out, we were on main course duty (a beautifully tender slow-cooked beef casserole courtesy of my wife, no bias at all) so we had to dash off to get our house ready.

Following the main, you’ve probably guessed that it’s envelope time again and on to dessert (an extraordinarly lavish spread of apple pie, cheesecake, chocolate mousse and cheese). Finally, everyone reconvenes at a fifth location for coffee. All that for £10 a head – bargain! And I met some very interesting new people.

Here’s what a safari supper looks like in diagrammatic form:

A safari supper in diagram form

I spoke to Lesley, one of the organisers, and she told me that not only did they try to ensure no two pairs sat together on one night, but they also tried to separate people who had been sat together on the last supper evening. Now that’s organisation…

A more modern twist

Several companies now organise safari suppers for young singletons. Safari Supper Club , based in South-West London, offers the chance to “spend the evening with your mates but also meet new people in an environment that isn’t the same pub/bar as usual”.

Their concept is slightly different. They take six groups of four people: three male and three female. The three male groups all prepare a three-course meal at someone’s house. The female groups move around the three houses, having a different course at each house.

Safari Supper Club organises the taxis for the ladies and at the end of the night everyone meets up at a club for drinking, dancing and who knows what else…

A great way to eat out for less

I have to confess I had some misgivings about how good an evening I would have, but I was proved utterly wrong on all counts. The food was fantastic and everyone had clearly gone the extra mile to cook up something special. The wine choices were also very good and there was a real sense of community and camaraderie around the tables. It was also extraordinarily good value. I’ve signed up for the next one already.

Top tips for hosting a course

If you're hosting a course, you really need to have something prepared in advance; either a cold dish or something you can warm in the oven. You're on a fairly tight schedule so cooking for even 20 minutes isn't really an option. For some inspiration, take a look at our quick dinner party menus article.

Why Apple’s iPhone Browser-Choice Option Sucks

iPhone displaying a list of internet browser apps

You just bought a new iPhone in Europe and finished setting it up. You’re excited to start planning a much-needed vacation, so you tap on the Safari browser to search for upcoming flights. Oh, you suddenly see a pop-up asking you to choose a default browser. You quickly scan the list of options, only recognizing one or two, then decide to keep Safari and move on with your hunt for travel deals.

With the iOS 17.4 update , Apple now includes a default browser selection pop-up screen for European iPhone users. It’s part of the company’s response to the Digital Markets Act , which EU lawmakers enacted earlier this year to encourage competition on the internet. (The browser choice screen is not currently rolling out to iPhones in the United States.) While browser choice screens are, in theory, meant to level the playing field in markets dominated by a handful of gatekeepers , their effectiveness is determined by the quality of the user experience.

Many of the competitors appearing on Apple’s browser choice screen are dissatisfied with how it’s been implemented in European markets. Brendan Eich, CEO and cofounder of Brave , compared powerful companies that control the defaults on smartphones to street magicians who fan out cards to pick from but hustle you by forcing a specific card to the top of the deck.

An Apple spokesperson requested to speak off the record about browser choice screens. When WIRED declined and asked for an on-the-record comment, all further requests for an interview went unanswered.

Whenever someone updates their software to iOS 17.4 in Europe, they may see the browser choice pop-up the first time they tap on the Safari browser. After a short introductory screen about the default browser choice, a list of 12 browser options are displayed in a random order. The browsers that appear on the list vary slightly by country. Safari is automatically included, and the 11 other picks are browsers with the most iPhone downloads in a particular country that also adhere to Apple’s configuration requirements for defaults.

“It starts from you clicking Safari,” says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO and cofounder of Vivaldi . “Which, I think all of us agree, that’s the wrong spot.” Tetzchner said he prefers Google’s implementation of its new browser choice screen that guides Android users to select a default while setting up their phone.

Google actually has some experience implementing a choice screen to appease European regulators. When it was forced to add a search engine default selector to Android in 2019, many of the developers behind alternative options initially criticized the design and denounced Google’s practice of selling slots on the screen through auctions. The company responded by rolling out an updated pop-up without slot auctions in 2021. Google did not respond to multiple requests for comment on this story.

The slow speed of enforcement from European regulation means any changes mandated by lawmakers only arrive after a drawn-out process. “Google had implicit permission to implement a bad version of it and run out the clock. In the process, it makes the entire remedy of a choice screen look bad,” says Kamyl Bazbaz, a vice president of public affairs for DuckDuckGo . “If you can only judge the effectiveness of a thing based on a bad version of it, you're gonna think it sucks.”

A few representatives from smaller browser companies also expressed that they wanted more information included with Apple’s choice process, like definitions of what a browser is for less tech-savvy users and descriptions of the different browsers’ specialties. “Giving people information about the choice, and also information about what they're choosing is really, really important,” says Kush Amlani, a global competition and regulatory counsel at Mozilla , which makes the Firefox browser.

Sophie Dembinski, a head of public policy and climate action at Ecosia , mentioned how Apple’s pop-up appears for all iPhone users even if they’ve already gone into their phone’s settings and set an alternative browser as their default. In comparison, Google’s browser choice screen for Android users won’t show up if you’ve already gone through the steps of setting a preference for a third-party option.

While many developers are unhappy with Apple’s implementation, not every company with a browser on the choice screen expressed frustration. “We believe that Apple's approach to presenting the browser choice screen is fair and acceptable,” says Andrew Moroz Frost, the Aloha Browser founder. He pointed out the randomized order of the browsers shown on the pop-up as one example of Apple designing it in a fair manner.

Richard Socher, the founder and CEO of You.com , seemed more encouraged by there being a browser choice screen that includes the search-focused startup rather than frustrated by Apple’s implementation. “I think it’s great that there’s not the default already preselected,” he says. Socher highlighted the randomized order as a positive sign as well.

Is this choice screen a true turning point for alternative browsers to grow their user base? “We’re expecting to have a clear picture on user uplift within months, not weeks,” says Dembinski. While some browsers reported initial upticks in downloads , it still seems too soon to make sweeping generalizations about the long-term efficacy of Apple’s choice screen.

“We would like to encourage platform providers to also level out the playing field for app developers around the world, not just in the EU,” says Jan Standal, a vice president of product marketing at Opera . Some of the companies WIRED spoke with remain hopeful that the precedent of browser choice screens set by the DMA will inspire international software changes.

Shortly after Apple’s choice screen launched, the European Commision announced that the screen would be part of its wider investigation into how Apple, Google, and Meta might be breaking these updated regulations: “The Commission is concerned that Apple's measures, including the design of the web browser choice screen, may be preventing users from truly exercising their choice of services within the Apple ecosystem, in contravention of Article 6(3) of the DMA.” In keeping with its slow-moving tradition, this investigation may take up to a year to complete.

New AI Features Reportedly Coming to Safari in iOS 18

Safari will gain a series of AI-powered features and UI enhancements in iOS 18 , AppleInsider reports .

safari icon blue banner

  • An "Intelligent Search" browser assistant tool that leverages Apple's on-device AI technology to identify key topics and phrases on webpages for summarization purposes.
  • A "Web Eraser" tool that allows users to remove unwanted portions of webpages easily. Erasure is persistent, remaining even when revisiting a site unless changes are reverted.
  • A new, quick-access menu emerging from the address bar that consolidates page tools, bringing over some functions that currently sit in the Share Sheet and placing them alongside the new tools.

The iPadOS and macOS versions of Safari are also expected to align further. These new features are purportedly undergoing evaluation alongside internal builds of ‌iOS 18‌ and macOS 15 ahead of their unveiling at Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) in June. Earlier this month, backend code on Apple's servers suggested that a new Safari browsing assistant is in the works, corroborating this report.

Farther in the future, Apple is said to be working on a more powerful version of Visual Look Up that allows users to obtain information on products when browsing through images. The feature is expected to be released sometime in 2025.

Last week, Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman said that ‌iOS 18‌ will "overhaul" many of Apple's built-in apps , including Notes, Mail, Photos , and Fitness. Apple's next-generation operating systems are almost certain to be previewed during Apple's WWDC keynote on June 10, and the updates should be widely released in the fall.
