It’s easy to screenshot photos you or others share on the app, but WhatsApp makes it slightly harder to save videos. In this tutorial, I’ll show you a simple way to save anyone’s video . Here's what you'll need to do:

Open WhatsApp on a computer
Open the Status Video you want to save
Right-click and save it to your computer

Note: we urge you to ask permission before saving someone else’s video. Stealing content or exposing someone’s private moments isn’t cool.

How to download your own video

First, open WhatsApp and select the Status tab . Next, select the status you want, tap the three dots and choose the Share option.

Depending on your device, the share options might differ . Nonetheless, choose ‘ Save Video ’ or a similar option. Now, the video should save to your default photo storage app.

How to download someone else’s video

4 Ways to Download WhatsApp Status

WhatsApp doesn’t offer a direct way to share WhatsApp status AKA stories. What if you like someone’s status and want to share it with your friends? For that, you will need to download and save the picture or video from WhatsApp status in your phone’s gallery. Thankfully, you can download WhatsApp status in four ways. Let’s check the methods.

How to Save WhatsApp Status

The other person won’t be notified when you download the WhatsApp Status photo or video using any of the methods. However, if read receipts are enabled, they will know that you have seen the status.

1. Take a Screenshot

One of the easiest ways to save a picture from WhatsApp status is to take a screenshot. And that’s possible without downloading any extra app since both Android and iPhone support the screenshot feature. To take a screenshot, either press the Power and Home button or the Power and Volume down button simultaneously.

2. View WhatsApp Status in File Explorer (Android)

Interestingly, WhatsApp automatically downloads the status pictures and videos that you have viewed in the past 24 hours to your phone’s file explorer. So you don’t need any third-party app. However, the folder where the WhatsApp status’ media files are saved is hidden by default. You will need to make it visible first. Here are the steps in detail to save WhatsApp status to your phone’s gallery on Android phone.

Note: This method only works on Android phones.

1. Open any File Explorer app on your phone. I am using the Files by Google app . It’s a free app with a user-friendly interface and no ads.

2 . In the Files app from Google, tap on the three-bar to open the menu. Select Settings .

3. Enable the toggle next to Show hidden files . If you are using any other File explorer app, look for a similar setting that allows you to view hidden files.

You need to perform the above three steps only once. When you have enabled hidden files, you can directly download WhatsApp status using the following steps.

4. Launch WhatsApp and open the status that you want to download.

5. Open the Files app and navigate to the WhatsApp folder. You will find it under Internal storage > WhatsApp. If the WhatsApp folder is missing in the internal storage, don’t worry. Simply navigate to Internal storage >Android > Media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp .

6. Tap on the Media folder and go to .Statuses folder. You will notice that the color of the .Statuses folder is slightly different as it’s a hidden folder.

7. Inside the .Statuses folder, you will find the recently viewed status from the past 24 hours. Open any photo or video to view it.

Save WhatsApp Status in Gallery

Do note if you want to keep the status for future use, you will need to move or copy the picture or video out of the .Statuses folder. Otherwise, the files will be deleted after 24 hours automatically from your File Explorer.

To do so, tap the three-dot icon next to the photo or video and select Copy to . Choose a folder outside of the WhatsApp folder and paste it. Similarly, repeat the step for other files that you want to copy. Once copied, the status photos and videos will appear in your Android phone’s gallery as well.

How to Download WhatsApp Status Without Viewing It

If you want to save a WhatsApp status without being seen or viewing the story, the above method will come in handy. Basically, WhatsApp automatically downloads some status to your phone’s File Explorer even if you don’t view them. From what I noticed, WhatsApp usually downloads the status of the people before and after the current status.

So if you want to download the WhatsApp status of someone without letting them know, you should view the status of the people before and after the concerned person. Then open the .statuses folder in the File Explorer. Hopefully, you will see the status of the actual person over there without viewing it.

3. Use Third-Party Status Saver Apps for WhatsApp

If the above method doesn’t work in the future or it feels a bit troublesome, you can take the help of status saver apps to download status on Android. You simply need to view the WhatsApp status and the same would appear in status downloader apps. It’s just a matter of two-three taps. Let’s check the steps in detail.

1 . Install any WhatsApp status downloader app on Android. I use Status saver . It’s a small app and also lets you split long videos and send a WhatsApp message without saving numbers to contacts.

2. Open WhatsApp and view that status that you want to download.

3. Open the Status saver app. You will find the recently viewed status in the app. Tap on the photo or video that you want to download to your phone’s gallery and hit the Download icon. That will download the picture or video to your gallery.

4. Take Screen Recording (Android and iPhone)

Similar to taking a screenshot to download status photos, you can download status videos by recording the screen. Again, you don’t have to download anything. Both Android and iPhone offer a native feature to capture screen recording.

To take a screen recording on iPhone, open Control Center and look for the Screen recording option. It looks like a dot inside a circle. Long touch the Screen recording option and tap on the Microphone icon to enable it. This is done so that audio is also recorded along with your video.

Tip: If you don’t find Screen Recording in Control Center, go to Settings > Control Center and enable Screen recording.

Now open Control Center again and tap on the Screen recording option to start recording. Open WhatsApp status video and view it completely. Your phone will be recording in the background. When done, tap on the red bar at the top of the screen and hit the Stop button. That will stop the recording.

Launch the Apple Photos app and you will find the downloaded video. Open and edit it to trim it in a way so that only the status is visible.

On Android, you will find the screen recorder in Quick settings. Simply tap it to start recording the WhatsApp status. If your Android phone doesn’t offer a native screen recording tool, you can use third-party screen recorder apps .

However, you won’t be able to download WhatsApp Status Photos and Videos of your Contacts, as WhatsApp does not provide an official way to Download WhatsApp Status Photo or Video.

Luckily, if you have an Android Phone or Tablet, WhatsApp automatically downloads Status Photos and Videos of your Contacts to a hidden “ .statuses ” folder, right on the hard disk of your Android device.

Hence, all that is required to Download WhatsApp Status Videos and Photos on an Android Phone or Tablet is to unhide “ .statuses ” folder and copy the Status Video or Photo to another location on your Android device.

1. Save WhatsApp Status Videos Using File Manager

In case of most Android Phones, the hidden “ .statuses ” folder can be accessed by using File Manager or My Files as available on Samsung and other Android Phones.

Depending on the manufacturer, the File Manager can either be accessed from the App Drawer or by going to Apps > Tools > My Files (or similar paths).

Open File Manager > navigate to Android > Media > com.whatsapp > Whatsapp > and open the Media Folder by tapping on it.

Once you are in Media Folder, tap on 3-dot icon located at top-right corner and select Show Hidden Files option in the drop-down menu.

Next, open .Statuses Folder by tapping on it.

In “ .Statuses ” Folder, select and copy the WhatsApp Status Video that you want to save and paste it to WhatsApp Video Folder on your device.

Note: If the WhatsApp Status is a Photo or Image, you can copy it to WhatsApp Images Folder.

2. Save WhatsApp Status Video Using Any File Explorer App

If File Manager is not available on your device, you can save WhatsApp Status Video by using File Explorer Apps like ES File Explorer, Files By Google or Solid Explorer, which are available on Google Play Store.

1. Download and Install ES File Explorer from Google Play Store on your Android Phone.

2. Open ES File Explorer App > tap on the Menu icon located at top-left corner and move the toggle next to Show Hidden Files to ON position.

The first method uses the fact that when you see someone else status, then that status is temporarily stored in a hidden folder on your internal storage.

So, to view the hidden folder, you need a file explorer. Most of the smartphone does come with a pre-installed file explorer. But if not, Files By Google is an excellent choice.

So follow these steps to download WhatsApp status videos and photos.

1 . First of all, open WhatsApp and view the status which you want to download or save. As already explained, it will temporarily store that status media on your internal storage.

2 . Now open your "File explorer" and open its settings.

3 . Now open the setting of file explorer and enable "Show hidden files" option. If your file explorer doesn't have any option to show hidden files, then install other file explorers like Files By Google .

4 . Once you have enabled that option, now navigate to Internal storage > WhatsApp > Media >.Statuses .

All the status which you gave viewed will be saved in ' .Statuses ' folder. Now you can copy the desired video or image to other locations.

Now with this simple method, you can access all the status. Please note that the option to show hidden files may be different for different file explorers.

Method 2: Save WhatsApp Status Using a Third-Party App

Android is the most popular operating system for smartphones. And because of its popularity, you will find thousands of app for almost everything.

To avoid changing file explorer setting and navigating inside internal storage, you can use a fast and straightforward method to download WhatsApp status videos and photos using a third-party app called Status Saver.

This app also uses the same fact that the first method uses. But you don't need to enable 'show hidden folder' option and navigate to .statuses folder manually. It displays all the WhatsApp status automatically.

This method is by far the most straightforward and easy way to save WhatsApp status videos and images. To get started, follow these steps.

1 . Install Status Saver .

2 . Now open WhatsApp and view the desired status.

3 . Now open Status Saver app, and you will all the saved statuses there. You can click on any of the images or videos and save the photo or video. The image or video will be saved to your gallery.

The method is fast and easy and doesn't require any complicated steps.

If you don't find any status in the Status saver app, then you might not have seen the status in your WhatsApp.

Remember, you need to view the status in your WhatsApp before you can view it in the Status saver app.

Method 3: Save WhatsApp Status By Taking a Screenshot or Recording Screen

The last and most time-consuming way which most of the users will not like is by taking a screenshot or recording screen to save WhatsApp status videos and images.

This method involves taking a screenshot for saving status images and recording screens for video status.

You can use built-in shortcuts to take in a screenshot like swiping three fingers downward or pressing the volume down and power button simultaneously.

The shortcut to take a screenshot may vary depending on your smartphone.

And for the recording screen, you might have a pre-installed screen recorder, and if not, you can use DU recorder app.

Sadly, Status Saver is not available on the App store. And you might not have the option to show hidden files and folder in your file explorer.

The only way is to save WhatsApp Status is by taking a screenshot or recording screen .

Well, if you own an Android smartphone, then you'll be delighted to know that you can save WhatsApp Status videos and photos by following these simple steps listed below.

We've often found many hilarious WhatsApp Status videos that we've saved using this method, so it is a useful thing to know. However, if you want to save someone else's WhatsApp Status , then we urge you to take permission from the person before doing so.

How to save WhatsApp Status video on Android

The whole process requires a file manager on your Android smartphone. You can use any file manager of your choice but the steps may vary. To keep things simple, we used the Google Files App , which is a free file manager app for Android, for this tutorial. It comes pre-installed on Google's Pixel smartphones and you can easily download and install it via Google Play .

Now, follow these steps to save WhatsApp Status video on your Android smartphone:

Open Google Files app on your Android smartphone, and click on the hamburger icon present on the top-left and tap Settings .
Similarly, if you're using a Pixel smartphone, then open the Files app, click on the three-dots icon on the top-right and tap Settings .
On the next screen, enable Show hidden files . On Pixel smartphones, you need to enable Show internal storage .
Now go back to the Files app's main menu and tap Internal storage .
Now go to the WhatsApp folder > Media > ‘.Statuses' .
To save a photo or a video, long-press on it and tap Copy . Now paste the file in any folder of your choice in the phone's internal storage.

By following these steps, you'll be able to save any photo or video that was set as a contact's WhatsApp Status. This method allows you to save any WhatsApp status you've opened even if it's been more than 24 hours since the status was posted.

Add Background Music To WhatsApp Status

You can easily add music and MP3 songs to WhatsApp status videos and photos using video editing tools available in the market. Here, we’ll be using the InShot video editor, which has all the necessary features and available for both Android and iOS.

1] To start with, download and install InShot Video Editor on your Android or iPhone through the links given below.

2] Open the app, grant the storage permission.

3] Click on Video and select the clip you want to post on WhatsApp. If you wish to post photos with music, use the Photo option to import the pictures from the gallery.

4] Now, select the Music tool and click on the Add Track option.

5] You can now either select music from the featured library or import downloaded MP3 music files from your phone’s storage. You can even extract audio from other videos on your phone.
