Giro d'Italia stage 5 Live - Will Jonathan Milan win again?

Uno-X rider survives uphill finish to beat Milan and Bol

Søren Wærenskjold (Uno-X) claimed the first victory of his pro career with a powerful sprint on a punchy finale to stage 3 of the Saudi Tour.

The final 2km, with a series of short steep ramps, was too difficult for the purest of sprinters like Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco-AlUla), who gave up the overall leader's jersey.

But Wærenskjold, who won the U23 time trial world title in September, survived and made use of a strong lead-out before getting the better of stage 2 winner Jonathan Milan (Bahrain Victorious).

Cees Bol (Astana Qazaqstan) claimed the final spot on the podium for a second day in a row.

With Groenwegen dropped, Milan inherits the green jersey as overall leader, with Bol moving up into second at eight seconds. Max Kanter (Movistar) is now third at 16 seconds.

"I have waited for this for some time," said Wærenskjold. "I've been good in the under 23 class but hadn't managed to take a pro win, so this is really fantastic."

The 159km stage started in Al Manshiyah and headed to the hilltop finish of Abu Rakah, though tracking a different final road than the corresponding stage from last year.

Although there was a vague threat of crosswinds throughout another ride through the desert, a near full peloton arrived for the uphill final few kilometres.

After an initial false flat, the road kicked up with two kilometres to go, with Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) launching a speculative attack. Zdenek Stybar (Jayco-AlUla) countered and went solo but was tracked down by Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious), who won here last year. The pair came together for the final kilometre but didn't work together and a bunch of around 30 riders regrouped to contest the sprint.

Uno-X formed a two-man lead-out for Wærenskjold but Milan looked to repeat his trick from 24 hours previously with another ambitious long-range sprint.

Wærenskjold hit out and set about dragging Milan back, drawing level with 50 metres to go on the false flat finish before moving clear to celebrate a breakthrough moment.

"I knew when the guys went really hard on the bottom of the climb I couldn't follow. So I surfed a bit on the peloton to save myself for a sprint," Wærenskjold said.

"We did it perfectly. Today we took the right-hand side [of the road]. Finally we got the wind from the left so we got less wind compared to yesterday when we did really bad at the end. We learned from that and today we did it."

The inaugural edition of the Saudi Tour will see a number of big-name riders begin their seasons in the Middle East.

Mark Cavendish will make his first appearance in Bahrain McLaren colours following his transfer from Dimension Data, while Niki Terpstra (Total Direct Energie) and Nacer Bouhanni (Arkéa-Samsic).

2018 British Road Race Champion Connor Swift will also line up for Arkéa-Samsic, alongside compatriot Daniel McLay.

Brit James Shaw will have his first outing with Riwal Readynez while 2013 World Road Race Champion Rui Costa will lead UAE Team Emirates.

The race consists of five stages between February 4-8, centred around the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh.

The peloton returns to the Middle Eastern country after a 17-year break. The previous Tour de Saudi Arabia last ran in 2002.

The Movistar Team reinforces its presence in the 2023 Asia Tour as they start a long Middle East tournée in February with the third edition of the Saudi Tour, which will cover several areas from the Kingdom’s western zone over five stages predominantly suited to the sprinters.

The roads, hillier and slightly cooler than other races in the area, include  two difficult finishes: those in   Abu Rakah (Wednesday 1st), over a 800m, 7% slope right before the end, and especially the one at  Harrat Uwayrid (Thursday 2nd), with a brutal ascent (2.8km at 12%; last 1.5km at nearly 17%) just 9km  before the end. The last finish line in Maraya on Friday 3rd is also an uphill one.

Rory mcilroy, tiger woods and adam scott join pga tour subcommittee that will negotiate with saudi arabia's public investment fund, share this article.

An AP report on Wednesday night cited Tiger Woods as the lone player on the five-person PGA Tour Transaction Subcommittee that will further the discussions with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

After shooting a 4-under 67 to sit T-2 at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship on Thursday afternoon, Rory McIlroy refuted the report and said both he and Adam Scott were also on the seven-person subcommittee that includes Woods, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, former Tour player and current liaison Joe Ogilvie, Fenway Sports Group’s John Henry and Valero CEO Joe Gorder. The latter are also part of the Strategic Sports Group that was formed to develop PGA Tour Enterprises , the for-profit entity that was initially slated to be created by the Tour and Saudi PIF as a result of last summer’s shocking framework agreement. The subcommittee will report to the Tour board.

Earlier in the day on Wednesday, McIlroy said he wouldn’t be taking Webb Simpson’s place on the Tour’s policy board because players were “uncomfortable” with his potential return. He did, however, insist that he was still interested in helping with the PIF discussions however he was able.

McIlroy is one of few players who has a relationship with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan that dates back to 2022. Woods and the other player directors on Tour met with Al-Rumayyan back in March in the Bahamas . Said Woods of the meeting at the Masters, “I don’t know if we’re closer, but certainly we’re headed in the right direction. That was a very positive meeting, and I think both sides came away from the meeting feeling positive.”

The PGA Tour’s Chief Competitions Officer Tyler Dennis told media at the Wells Fargo Championship that there were no material updates at this point on the discussions with PIF, but if we’ve learned anything this week, there’s plenty going on behind the scenes.

McIlroy says he and Adam Scott also involved in Saudi meetings

Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott are joining Tiger Woods on the subcommittee directly involved in negotiating with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf, an addition to what the PGA Tour previously disclosed even though McIlroy says he’s been involved in discussions.

McIlroy said Thursday at the Wells Fargo Championship that while he is not on the PGA Tour Enterprises board, “I’m in some way involved in that transaction committee.”

It was yet another twist in the players’ involvement on the board. McIlroy resigned in November, and the other player directors voted to replace him with Jordan Spieth. Then, Webb Simpson said he would resign his seat but only if McIlroy would replace him.

McIlroy was willing, but he said there was “a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason.”

The PGA Tour sent out a release Thursday night confirming Joe Gorder, the chairman and CEO of Texas-based Valero, would be the inaugural chairman of PGA Tour Enterprises. It also listed McIlroy and Scott on the transactional subcommittee — along with Woods, Gorder, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, John W. Henry of Fenway Sports Group and Joe Ogilvie, the director liaison.

McIlroy said he was on a call with the group Sunday that last 1 1/2 hours as it went over a 150-page document on a future model, among other things.

“I’m not on the board, but I’m in some way involved in that transaction committee,” McIlroy said. “I don’t have a vote so I don’t have I guess a meaningful say in what happens in the future, but at least I feel like I can be helpful on that committee.

“And that was sort of a compromise for I guess not getting a board seat.”

A person directly involved with the PGA Tour Enterprises board was surprised Thursday to hear Woods was the only player involved because the person thought McIlroy and Scott were supposed to be part of the subcommittee. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because board matters are to be kept private.

Simpson suggested as much Wednesday when he spoke of player directors supporting McIlroy being involved based on his ideas and experience.

“I just think his views are important, and the other guys feel the same,” Simpson said. “We kind of had to figure out, ‘OK, where is his place? How can we hour our role as board members ... but also bring in a guy at least to voice his ideas and just see how he can help us.”

Monahan had said McIlroy not returning to the board was “in no way a commentary on Rory’s important perspective and influence.” He said it was more sticking to the process of how a player becomes a board member.

Scott joined the PGA Tour in January. Other players on the board are Woods, Spieth, Simpson, Patrick Cantlay and Peter Malnati, with Ogilvie — a former player — as a liaison director.

The PGA Tour already has Strategic Sports Group as a minority investor, and is working on a similar deal with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

The drama surrounding the PGA Tour Policy Board continues as Rory McIlroy revealed his role in the PGA Tour’s talks with the Saudi PIF.

Rory McIlroy will play somewhat of a role in the PGA Tour’s negotiations with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) after all.

Following his opening round at the Wells Fargo Championship , where he carded a 4-under 67, McIlroy revealed that he had joined the PGA Tour Enterprises Transaction Subcommittee.

“I’m not on the [PGA Tour Policy] Board, but I’m somehow involved in that transaction committee,” McIlroy explained.

“I don’t have a vote, so I don’t have a meaningful say in what happens in the future, but at least I can—I feel like I can be helpful on that committee, and that was sort of a compromise for not getting a board seat.”

Late Wednesday, a report indicated that Tiger Woods would serve as the lone player on this subcommittee, joining PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan , player liaison Joe Ogilvie, Fenway Sports Chair John Henry, and PGA Tour Enterprises Chair and Valero Energy Executive Joe Gorder.

But now it appears McIlroy and Adam Scott will join this subcommittee, which will guide negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Saudi PIF—the beneficiary of LIV Golf .

“I’ve already had calls with that group,” McIlroy added.

“I had a really good hour and a half Zoom with those guys on Sunday; we went through a 150-page doc about the future product model and everything.”

Reports earlier in the week indicated that Woods, Jordan Spieth, and Patrick Cantlay did not accept McIlroy’s plea to rejoin the PGA Tour Policy Board, from which he resigned in November. A report also indicated that Woods and McIlroy’s relationship had strained , a point the four-time major winner shot down after his round at Quail Hollow Thursday.

“I think friends can have disagreements or not see eye to eye on things but have disagreements on things. I think that’s fine,” McIlroy said when asked about his relationship with Woods.

“We had a really good talk last Friday for 45 minutes just about a lot of different things. No, there’s no strain there. We might see the future of golf a little bit differently, but I don’t think that should place any strain on a relationship or on a friendship.”

McIlroy said on Wednesday that he has grown “impatient” with the delay in negotiations between the Tour and the PIF. Professional golf remains divided, with dozens of major champions playing on separate tours. Hence, the Northern Irishman expressed a desire to jump back on the board to help aid discussions and hopefully unite golf once again.

But to do so, McIlroy would have had to replace board member Webb Simpson .

“I don’t necessarily think or believe that people didn’t want me involved. It was more just the process of how I could get involved again, right? The board has gone through this massive eight-month governance review, and what happened with Webb and I and that whole thing was outside of the scope of the governance, right? So, what’s the process for trying to bring me back in? That was really the sticking point with it all,” McIlroy further explained.

“We tried to get to a compromise where I stuck my hand up and said, ‘Look, I can be helpful if this is what Webb wants to do.’ It was really tricky to do that, so I’m involved in the transaction committee, and that’s basically to try to get this deal done with PIF. I feel like I’ve got good relationships on both sides there, and hopefully, I can bring something to the table and try to provide some insight and value and see if we can get this thing done.”

The PGA Tour and the PIF struck a framework agreement on June 6, 2023, nearly one year ago. That bombshell deal signaled a possible unification between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, but a finalized agreement remains abstract.

Perhaps McIlroy’s inclusion within the subcommittee could make this concept a reality. Or professional golf will continue as a soap opera like it has this week in Charlotte.
