Savonnières, a former river port.

Between Tours and Villandry, Savonnières is one of the top stages on the Loire à Vélo cycling trail. And yet, exceptionally for Touraine, there is no great château in the town. Instead, visitors admire a beautiful picture-postcard landscape, especially from the north bank of the Cher. “Douce France” (“Sweet France”) sang Charles Trenet…

The postcard

A homogenous façade of white houses with slate roofs is the setting for an attractive 12th century church (Saint Gervais Saint Protais), with a beautifully designed porch in Saintongeais Romanesque style. Behind you is a big, green hillside. Before you,  the River Cher, traditional boats, the dam, and not forgetting the birds right in the middle of the river . They seem to like the view, too.

The River Cher, a watery mirror just before the Savonnières dam. A well known step for those who chose cycling holidays in France, on the Loire By Bike. Touraine Loire Valley

The River Cher, a watery mirror just before the Savonnières dam.

But unlike you, they will not be able to visit the  petrified caves of Savonnières  and its concretions, a curiosity seen at 14°C. A temperature that is particularly welcome at the height of summer.

Savonnières: a port, a dam, a bypass river…

The port seems to date back 2200 years. At that time, amphoras of Roman wine were transported all the way here. But down the ages, plenty of other goods came here, including sarcophagi, stones, crops and cattle.

River transport finally declined, but a few enthusiasts had the good idea of relaunching the activity of boat-building and the port. Just upstream from the dam,  a fine fleet of traditional boats calls visitors to sail away . From April to December,  Les Bateliers du Cher (“The Cher Boatmen”) provide trips lasting an hour or two, sometimes enhanced by themed tastings. A popular choice for a hen party or stag party on board La Belle Passante.

At the helm, the guide will be delighted to talk about the features of the boats (the tow boat “La Pucelle”, the pillard boat “Le Gaillard”, etc.), as well as the different fish or the role of the  river bypass . The river bypass was created recently. It enables large migratory animals (eels, allis shad and sea lamprey) to pass, by dividing the height of the waterfall into several smaller waterfalls.

A sightseeing destination

The  Loire by Bike cycling trail will take you along the banks of the Cher (bikes to rent on the campsite) to  Tours or the Châteaux of  Villandry ,  Azay-le-Rideau ,  L’Islette and  Langeais . And the  n°14 bike trail  will lead you  to… the “ends of the earth” . This is the name given to a small beach, where the Cher meets the Loire.

On foot, the trail along  the hundred steps path  (5.9km) is a great way to explore the hillside. A longer discovery trail (13 km) passes through the farming plateau (meadows, forest, cornfields, etc.), the Boire Futembre (a meander of the River Cher), then the alluvial plain.

And please note that the Canoe-Kayak Club of Tours provides canoes to rent near the campsite.

Savonnières

Savonnières - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Indre-et-Loire

Savonnières is a city of Indre-et-Loire , in the Center-Val de Loire region, 15 km southwest of Tours.

The territory of the commune, vast of more than 16 km², is crossed in the north by the course of the Cher which flows in the Loire to 5 km in the west. The village has developed on the slopes overlooking the left bank of the Cher.

Already occupied during Prehistory, the site is inhabited during Antiquity, and the Romans establish a soap mill along the path linking Tours to Chinon .

A Gallo-Roman cemetery dating from the third century was discovered in caves of the town.

During the Middle Ages, a parish is created and the city takes off thanks to the fluvial trade.

In the twelfth century, a seigniorial castle was built and until the Revolution, Savonnières is a chatellenie where justice is done.

The traffic and the trade related to the sailors who sail on the Cher make the wealth of Savonnières until the beginning of the 20th century. At the same time, a viticultural activity that has since disappeared has also contributed to the wealth of the locality.

Savonnières now has nearly 3200 inhabitants and enjoys the proximity of the agglomeration Touraine while highlighting its historic and natural heritage. Belonging to the perimeter of the Val de Loire labeled UNESCO, near many famous tourist sites (castles), it is a step of choice for who visits the region.

Geographical information

Nearest cities & towns, things to see and do.

It is its so-called "petrifying" caves - because the water is transformed into stone - which constitute the jewel of the city. To the west of the village, it was first of quarries used by the Romans as a necropolis and then in the Middle Ages by the craftsmen to extract stone tufa. They were then partially invaded by the waters. Stalagmites and stalactites were formed, but also natural sculptures in the form of draperies or petrified fountains. The caves are now open to the public and offer an amazing sight. Handmade objects made on site are also offered for sale, made in this unusual material. Open every day from February to November. Guided tour: 5.30 and 7.40 euros. Information on +33 2 47 50 00 09.

Listed in its entirety, a historical monument, to be seen next on the built heritage plan, the Saint-Gervais and Saint-Protais church. Succeeding a first building of the eighth century, it was built from the early twelfth stone tufa. We notice his amazing porch style saintongeais with three archivolts (ornaments framing an arcade) carved with foliage and fantastic animals, including. Restored and enlarged in 1812, it was endowed in the late nineteenth century with a cedar altar carved by a student of Rodin, Sergeff. See also, stained glass windows depicting the martyrdom of Saint Gervais and Saint Protais (nineteenth century), a polychrome wooden statue depicting Saint Roch , the patron saint of the sailors (sixteenth) and a painting of the sixteenth also showing Christ blessing.

See also, the House of the Passeur, built in 1580. This inn had an astonishing destiny: from 1613 to the Revolution, the lord of the place used the floor like house of justice whereas the ground floor remained a coffee... In 1850, it also functioned as an office where the right of way was regulated by the ferry when one crossed the Cher. But a bridge was built a few years later. Today, the house houses an art gallery and a shop.

The Maison de l'If, a former religious school now transformed into a restaurant and the town hall, a 19th century building enhanced in 1906 to ward off floods, will also be included in a discovery tour of the historic heritage. Note that the council room houses a remarkable carved fireplace dating from 1908.

Finally, we will not forget the Moulin des Fontaines, located on the site of the soap mill of the Roman era. The buildings and mechanisms of the current mill date back to the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. Part of the building houses guest rooms but the mill can be visited by contacting +33 6 47 72 52 92.

These different sites such as the banks of the Cher and the charming hillsides surrounding the city can be the object of hiking. Two trails are specifically focused on local heritage. Other routes include the surrounding area, such as the village of Villandry and its castle or the banks of the Loire, a few kilometers north of Savonnières (also accessible to mountain bikers). Documentation and information on +33 2 47 50 12 66.

For a walk aboard a traditional boat, on the Cher, and find the feelings of the sailors of the past while admiring the landscape differently, the association of the Boatmen du Cher offers from April to October small cruises of 30 minutes at 2 o'clock. Price: from 5 euros. Information and reservations on +33 6 88 74 57 83.

The Cher can also fill fishing enthusiasts. Learn about the developed sites and the regulations at +33 2 47 05 33 77.

Finally, for athletes, a skate park is available and indoor or outdoor tennis courts can be booked on +33 2 47 53 05 86.

Location of Savennières

Savennières is a commune located in the Maine-et-Loire department in Western France.

History of Savennières Wine Appellation

The area’s outstanding natural conditions were probably first identified during the Roman invasions. Vine growing developed at the time of the large monasteries, and was subsequently continued by landowners and then, in the 19th century, by Angers’ monks.

Terrior of Savennières Wine Appellation

Terroir is an interesting concept, incorporating climate and soil to produce a specific taste based on the grape variety. Here, we can taste the flavors of the land itself and it is easy to identify that Savennières has outstanding natural terroir. Savennières area contains between 100-200 hectares of land. It mostly consists of sandstone and schist, which makes it produce an earthy, fruity wine. One plot within the appellation produces wines with unique character and a strong terroir bond.

Savennières Wine Characteristics

Chenin wines are full of complex aromas, a silky-smooth body, and a smooth finish. Chenin wines have superb flavors both in youth and when aged. The white wines of the Savennières appellation are thus often at their peak after about five years of aging in cellar conditions.

Lyft and Uber in Napa

Another great option if you want more flexibility is to simply take a Lyft or Uber in Napa. There are plenty of Lyft and Uber drivers in the region. And they are happy to pick you up and drop you off at the next winery on your itinerary! This can be your cheapest and most convenient option to visit different Napa wineries in a short amount of time. Especially if you’re traveling with 1-3 other people.

Local Napa Valley transportation

If you’re on more of a budget, you can take the local Napa Valley transportation to get around Napa City. But, you will be restricted mostly to the tasting rooms in and around the city that are near bus routes. The good news for those from the Bay Area is that you can use your Clipper Card. Otherwise, a one-way fare is $1.60. Using local transportation can be a good option to check out some of the non-wine related attractions around Napa. That being said, to get out into the country and the actual wineries, your best options are the above choices.

Planning a trip to Napa can be overwhelming with how big and popular the region is. But, we hope this guide gives you insight into the best ways to get to Napa from San Francisco !
