Overview of Shanghai (# shanghai travel blog)

shanghai travel hashtag

Shanghai is located about 1,207 km from Beijing and about 1,450 km from Guangzhou. And this is also an important bridge between the capital Beijing in the North and the economic center Guangzhou in the South. Shanghai is the most populous city in China. Shanghai is located between Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, it takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes by air to travel to the capital Beijing. This city has a special location, located in the East of China, so it has many natural blessings. All of this gives Shanghai favorable conditions for economic development and tourism development.

shanghai travel hashtag

The city borders Jiangsu to the north, Anhui to the west and Zhejiang provinces to the south. Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang form the Yangtze River Delta triangle. This is the world’s largest urban concentration (1/10 of China’s population) and a key economic region of China (1/5 of the country’s GDP).

Shanghai is a magical city, where Eastern and Western cultures blend harmoniously together. The typical Western architecture of the Bund both contrasts and blends with the modern architecture of Lujiazui’s skyscrapers.

If you ask where Shanghai is, surely many people will know that this is a large city in mainland China, but if you ask what area Shanghai is located, not everyone can answer.

Shanghai, also known by the very beautiful and poetic name – The Fragrant Harbour city, is the city with the largest population in China. This city also has a special location on the East coast of China, blessed with nature, so the climate here is extremely mild. All of this creates favorable conditions for The Fragrant Harbour city to develop economically in parallel with tourism development. Come here and experience, this place will definitely not disappoint you.

In Xintiandi, we still see the old buildings of Shikumen area. All the old architecture still exists in the heart of bustling Shanghai. Jing’an Temple is still located next to Nanjing Road, crowded Huaihai Road, People’s Square, Zhongshan Park or the busy Wujiaochang, Xujiahui, Yuyuan Mall, etc. shopping malls.

Coming to Shanghai, you will have unforgettable experiences when you can hear resounding opera songs, enjoy typical dishes in long-standing restaurants, tasting authentic French dishes, and enjoy snacks in the famous Chenghuang Temple, enjoy tea in the old town alleys and find bars in the wooden houses of Hengshan Road.

Why should you visit Shanghai? (# shanghai blog)

Ancient city: Besides that development, Shanghai city also experienced ancient times. This city still retains its ancient beauty, tinged with time such as traditional gardens, water towns, medieval-style architectural houses and buildings…

shanghai travel hashtag

Modern city: Shanghai, no exaggeration, is not inferior to the US cultural capital of New York. This is one of the busiest and most bustling cities in the world with unique, luxurious, lavish buildings, especially the Shanghai Bund, which is a leading financial center.

shanghai travel hashtag

Unique culture: Shanghai is not the capital of China but it is considered the cultural center of this country. The culture here is a combination of Western modernity and Chinese tradition, creating a unique and charming culture that few places have.

shanghai travel hashtag

Easily traveling to other tourist destinations: As a large city, Shanghai possesses extremely modern infrastructure. Coming here, visitors can easily move to other tourist destinations at Shanghai Pudong International Airport or by bus, especially by train.

shanghai travel hashtag

When is the best time to travel to Shanghai? (# shanghai travel blog)

The most suitable time to visit and travel to Shanghai is from from March to May or from September to early November. The climate at this time is spring or autumn, the weather is quite cool and fresh, pleasant, so visitors can explore the city in a comfortable way.

shanghai travel hashtag

However, the remaining months of the year are not a bad time to visit this city. Each month has its own beauty that you cannot miss. Come to Shanghai in the spring to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of traditional festivals, in the summer to watch sunset at the Bund, in the fall to admire the red leaf streets and in the winter to see the white snow or just simply is to tasting spicy hot pot here. Interesting, is not it?

shanghai travel hashtag

Coming to the suburbs of Shanghai in spring, you can see dragonflies flying everywhere creating an extremely gentle scene. Peach blossoms in Nanhui area, cherry blossoms in Gucun park and tulips in Shanghai flower port are also blooming.

shanghai travel hashtag

There is a folk saying “autumn wind, crab legs itch”, meaning that when the weather turns to autumn, enjoying hairy crab is the best. The yellow-legged crabs, thick meat that is both soft and sweet, are also a special feature that you should try when you come to Shanghai at this time.

shanghai travel hashtag

People in Shanghai often have the custom clean their gravesites and make ritual offerings to their ancestors before and after the Qingming time, so traveling between cities is often difficult. In the first half of May and after the National Day, there is a long break, so going to Shanghai is not the perfect choice. Tourists should also avoid the above times to make their trip as convenient as possible.

From the first half of June onward is the rainy season, so it often rains continuously and from the end of August to the end of September there are often sudden thunderstorms. If you come to Shanghai during the above two times, remember to bring a small umbrella with you!

How to get to Shanghai? (# shanghai travel guide)

As mentioned above, Shanghai is one of the large cities in China with leading modern infrastructure and transportation in Asia, so getting here is quite easy. You can visit this city by plane, car or train…

By plane (# shanghai travel blog)

Shanghai has two airports, Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Hongqiao International Airport (SHA), located in the east and west of the city, respectively. Pudong Airport gathers most international flights while Hongqiao Airport mainly serves domestic flights, with the exception of a few flights to Japan and South Korea.

Pudong International Airport

shanghai travel hashtag

Pudong International Airport is located in the coastal areas of Jiangzhen, Shiwan and Zhuqiao. Getting from here to the city center, you have to go about 30 km. Pudong International Airport is divided into two terminals T1 and T2 and there is free bus transportation between these two terminals.

To getting to city center from the airport, you can take railway line 2, maglev train, bus number 10 or take a taxi from Pudong international airport to the city and vice versa.

Maglev train: The Maglev train arrives at Longyang Road station, you can transfer to line 2, line 7 and line 16. The journey takes about 8 minutes, one-way ticket prices range from 50 – 100 Yuan. This is a high-speed train dedicated to the journey from Pudong airport to downtown Shanghai. With a speed of up to 430 km/h, it only takes you 8 minutes to reach the center.

shanghai travel hashtag

Shanghai Maglev Train Ticket

But if you bring a lot of luggage like me, it’s very hard to go this way. Because after stopping at Longyang Road station, you will have to change to the subway line to go back to the hotel. And Longyang station is not very close to the city center where we booked hotel.

NOTE: You can buy Maglev train tickets at the counter in the airport or buy online in advance here .

In my opinion, you should only try the Maglev train, but take a taxi for good.

Taxi: From the airport to the city center is about 40-60 km long. This is the most convenient option, cost around are 150 – 250 RMB during the day and 200 – 300 RMB at night from the city center to the airport and vice versa. You can ask the hotel receptionist to call you for a ride to the airport in advance.

By bus: Airport buses can take you to prominent attractions such as: Hongqiao, Jing’an Temple, Wujiaochang, People’s Square, Century Avenue, Lujiazui, Xujiahui and other urban areas.

shanghai travel hashtag

In addition, you can also take a long-distance passenger bus to nearby cities such as Hangzhou, Jiaxing, Qingtian, Wenzhou, Nantong, Qidong, Kunshan, Suzhou, Wuxi, Zhangjiagang and Huzhou.

Note: When entering at Pudong Airport (and other airports in China), foreign guests will have to do the procedure for taking fingerprints on the machine and fill in the information from entry.

Hongqiao International Airport (# shanghai travel guide)

shanghai travel hashtag

Hongqiao International Airport (mainly serving domestic flights or flights from Hong Kong or Macau) and is divided into two terminals T1 and T2. Passengers need to know the departure terminal to avoid being late for their flight. If you get the wrong terminal, don’t worry too much, just get on the bus to go to the other terminal and it’s free.

By train: Lines 2 and 10 can go to Hongqiao airport terminal (where line 2 only goes to terminal 2, line 10 can go to terminals 1 and 2).

shanghai travel hashtag

By bus: From Hongqiao Airport, you can take a bus to Zizhu National High-Tech Industrial Development Park, Jiading West Railway Station, Pudong Airport, Shanghai Station, East Yan’an Road at the Bund, Lupu Bridge, Qinglan New Village, Shanghai Zoo and other places in the city.

Taxi: There is a taxi pick-up point at Terminal 1 and south of the arrival gate (ground) of Terminal 2.

Long-distance bus: Hongqiao airport has long-distance bus routes to Hangzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, Zhangjiagang and other nearby cities. You can also take a bus to places in the inner city of Hongqiao.

Shuttle bus: There is a free shuttle bus service for passengers going to the wrong station T1, T2  of Hongqiao airport. The waiting station is gate 6 of the departure floor of Terminal 1 (first service starts at 6am and last departure is at 11pm) and the waiting station Terminal 2 arrives at gate 1 (starts serving at 6:30am), last trip is 11pm).

By train (# shanghai guide)

Shanghai is an important rail transport hub with four stations: Shanghai Railway Station (i.e. new passenger station), South railway station, West railway station and finally Hongqiao station. These stations connect Shanghai with most cities in China.

Shanghai Station

shanghai travel hashtag

Shanghai Station is the largest railway station divided into North Station and South Station. Every day, there are many trains from Shanghai to all major cities in China. Shanghai people often call it the new passenger station to distinguish it from the old Shanghai station (ie Laobei Station).

Address: No. 303, Fuling Road, Jing’an District, Shanghai. Transportation: Take subway line 1, line 3, line 4 to Shanghai station.

South Railway Station

shanghai travel hashtag

Shanghai South Station is located at the southern gateway of the city. Most trains are long-distance trains to the south and short trains in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.

Address: 9001 Humin Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai. Transportation: Take Line 1 and Line 3 to Shanghai South Station.

Hongqiao Railway Station

shanghai travel hashtag

Hongqiao Station is an important transportation hub from Hongqiao to the east of Terminal T2 of Hongqiao International Airport. There are EMU trains and high-speed EMU trains transporting passengers.

Address: Shenhong Road, Minhang District, Shanghai. Transportation: Take subway line 2 and line 10 to Hongqiao station.

Shanghai West Railway Station

Shanghai West Station is about 5 km east of Shanghai Station (new passenger station). Basically, this station has quite a few trips.

Address: No. 22, Taopu Road, Putuo District, Shanghai. Transportation: Take metro line 11 to Shanghai West Station.

Getting around Shanghai (# shanghai travel blog)

shanghai travel hashtag

Metro (# shanghai blog)

This is the means of transport I use the most because it can go to many Shanghai tourist attractions and the price is also very cheap (from 3 – 6 yuan / trip). Before entering each subway station, you will be screened and your bags will be checked. Compared to Beijing, the number of people using public transport during rush hour in Shanghai is still much smaller.

shanghai travel hashtag

Currently, 14 metro lines have been opened in Shanghai which are line 1 to line 13 and line 16. There are also transfer points between lines.

Currently, there are several new subway lines under construction. Subway fares are charged at 3 CNY for the first 6km and 1 CNY for every 10km after that. You can buy a one-way ticket at the metro station or use a Shanghai public transport card.

shanghai travel hashtag

All Shanghai Rail Transit stations have 1-day pass and 3-day pass for the convenience of visitors to Shanghai. For a one-day ticket, the ticket price is RMB 18 and is valid for 24 hours. The 3-day pass costs 45 CNY and is valid for 72 hours. All apply to rail transit lines, except maglev train lines.

Subway operating hours usually start from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. and end from 10:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. You can ask the staff on the subway or at stations to know the schedule of each line.

The subway system is spread everywhere, making it convenient to travel to key attractions and bustling commercial streets in Shanghai. To save time, you should learn about the Shanghai subway route map and look it up before traveling. At the subway exits there are signs showing street names and surrounding shopping centers, but if you get lost, you can ask the staff here.

Buses in Shanghai have basically completed the upgrade of the air conditioning system, but the ticket price remains the same at 2 Yuan. Particularly, the suburban districts are quite far away, so ticket prices will range from 1 – 11 CNY depending on each location. In Shanghai, there are many one-way routes, so buses have different itineraries. If you know you won’t be taking the same route as when you go or return, it’s best to proactively find your own get-off point first.

shanghai travel hashtag

Shanghai public transportation is very crowded during rush hour, especially at 7 – 9 am and 5 – 8 pm there will often be traffic jams, so please avoid these times.

The starting taxi price in Shanghai is 14 Yuan / 3 km (for Touran models it is 16 Yuan / 3 km). Every next 3 – 15 km will be charged 2.5 CNY/km and from 15 km onwards will be charged 3.6 CNY/km. Night taxi prices will increase by 30%.

shanghai travel hashtag

Taxi can be caught everywhere in the city. Many people have commented to me that taxis in Shanghai are expensive, but in fact the prices are very reasonable, only about 15 – 20 yuan for one trip.

Unlike Beijing, Shanghai taxis always turn on Baidu Maps for directions. If you don’t know what software Baidu Maps is, you can refer to the review at the following link.

Sightseeing bus

shanghai travel hashtag

Shanghai Bus Sightseeing Tour

In Shanghai, there are 3 bus routes specifically for tourists: Shanghai City Tour (red line), Shanghai Ancient Temple Tour (Green Line), Shanghai Pudong Area (Blue Line). These lines operate 24 hours a day and pass through famous tourist destinations in Shanghai. Visitors can admire the historical, natural and cultural beauty of Shanghai in the shortest and most convenient time.

shanghai travel hashtag

Shanghai has a large tourist area and some roads in the city center ban bicycles, so it is difficult to travel all the tourist areas in Shanghai by this type of vehicle. However, you can choose to rent bicycles at some attractions and the service is quite good.

shanghai travel hashtag

For example, the old horse riding tour in Xuhui district or visiting the old house in Yuyuan Road, etc. In general, the Wukang road, Tianping road and Hengshan road are all good options for cycling.

Where to go and what to do in Shanghai?

If you are a fan of the movie “New Shanghai Bund”, you definitely cannot help but know this famous place. Traveling to this city you will witness the entire scene of the blockbuster and famous around the world. The second reason that the Bund should be on your list of places to visit, this is a famous tourist destination all over the world, a place that any tourist wants to see once when come to this luxurious city.

shanghai travel hashtag

The Bund is located by the beautiful Huangpu River, once a busy trading place, so this area has many high-rise buildings, financial and commercial centers built in 1930 according to quaint European architecture.

shanghai travel hashtag

Shanghai is a blend of classical and modern architecture. Walking along the Bund, you will feel like you are walking between two sides of the world, with traditional houses on one side, typical Western European architecture on the other hand, and high-rise buildings on the other. Lujiazui skyscrapers are racing to rise. All have made this place have a charm that cannot be found anywhere else.

shanghai travel hashtag

Some people say that the story of the Bund represents the entire city of Shanghai. The Bund consists of 52 buildings of different styles and is also known as the “Bund International Architecture Exhibition”. Although the buildings on the Bund are not from the same designer or built in the same period, their architectural colors are essentially identical and the overall contour treatment is remarkably surprised coordinated.

You can walk around the bustling Bund, have dinner watching the romantic Huangpu River or take a boat to see the night view… those are definitely memorable experiences on your trip.

shanghai travel hashtag

If you are knowledgeable about history, you will certainly know that the history of this bustling financial district comes from its past as an area of British settlement. Later, this settlement combined with the United States to become the world’s most famous Shanghai Public Concession area. That is the reason why the architectural works here have a combination of European and Asian beauty. What an interesting place, right?

Nanjing Road

shanghai travel hashtag

Always among Shanghai’s top favorite places to visit, Nanjing road is known as “China’s No. 1 commercial street” with hundreds of famous stores and shopping areas. This place is truly a paradise for shopping addicts with more than 600 stores displayed along both sides of the road, creating an extremely bustling and crowded scene.

At first glance, modern buildings are mixed with old European-style buildings. Advertising lights and neon lights flash throughout the night along the road. Visitors can also find a taste of old Shanghai through miniature versions of old trams.

shanghai travel hashtag

This walking street is very suitable for young people for living virtual purposes, couples walking hand in hand and even tourists who love the bustle of the energetic Nanjing Street.

According to statistics, up to 1.7 million visitors come to Nanjing Avenue every day. Why not hesitate to immerse yourself in the million-tourist street to enjoy the unique atmosphere as well as shop for items for your friends and loved ones after a long trip, right?

Shanghai Disneyland Park

Address: 4MV5+945, Pudong, Shanghai, China, 201205

The first Disneyland park in Mainland China is located in the new Pudong area, Shanghai. It features the world’s first pirate-themed Disney castle and the longest parade among any other Disney park. You will definitely get new experiences when immersing yourself in this magical kingdom.

shanghai travel hashtag

Shanghai Disneyland Park is divided into 6 special theme parks: Mickey Avenue, Garden of Whimsiness, Adventure Island, Treasure Bay, Tomorrowland and Dreamworld. No matter who you are or what age you are, at Shanghai Disneyland park, you will find life in a happy world.

Shanghai Disneyland requires visitors to keep their clothes neat and not to wear long clothes. Tourists 16 years old and above are not allowed to wear cartoon character costumes. Camera stands, selfie sticks, baby chairs and deck chairs are prohibited.

Oriental Pearl TV Tower (Dongfang Mingzhu)

Address: 1 Shiji Blvd, Lujiazui, Pudong, Shanghai, China, 200120

shanghai travel hashtag

The Oriental Pearl Tower is located across the Huangpu River from the Bund. This tower marks the landmark development of Shanghai. Sitting in the elevator for the entire length of 351 meters to see the scenery on both sides of the Huangpu River is something not to be missed when visiting Shanghai. If you want to enjoy the food and enjoy the night view, going to the 267 meter high revolving restaurant is not a bad suggestion.

shanghai travel hashtag

The Oriental Pearl TV Tower 468 meters high includes 11 spheres of different sizes. This design comes from a great artistic concept and offers the most careful investment. On the 3 main spheres you can see the city on both sides of the river from different heights. You can fully enjoy the panoramic view of Shanghai at an altitude of 259 meters in a transparent room. At night, you can also experience the beauty of the “Never sleep City” in colorful neon lights.

In any check-in photo of the city of Shanghai, there will also appear an image of a building with a special shape. That is the Mingzhu Oriental Television Tower, the symbol of Shanghai.

shanghai travel hashtag

When I hadn’t been to Shanghai, I thought this tower was green, pink, and red, and it didn’t look good. But you have to go to the place to see it with your own eyes to see the tower is really beautiful, especially when the lights are on in the evening.

Mingzhu Oriental Television Tower is also a miniature world of entertainment, food, fairs and shopping, etc.

Waibaidu Bridge (the Garden Bridge)

Address: Waitan, Huangpu, China, 200002

shanghai travel hashtag

When looking through tourist attractions in Shanghai, I accidentally came across the image of a steel bridge standing proudly in the heart of the modern city, and that image brought back many memories.

Surely you watch the movie “New River of Separation” and will remember the part where Zhao Wei jumped to her death, and that bridge has the same shape as this Waibaidu bridge. That’s why I call this the bridge for Zhao Wei to commit suicide.

shanghai travel hashtag

Waibaidu Bridge is the first bridge built entirely of steel in China. With the main task of connecting the two districts of Huangpu and Hongkou, Waibaidu Bridge has witnessed many events in the history of Shanghai city.

Shanghai Chedun Film Park

  • Address: 4915 Beisong Hwy, Chedunzhen, Songjiang Qu.
  • Hours: 8:30 AM–4:30 PM
  • Ticket price: ¥80 – The official website of Shanghai Film Park does not sell tickets online. If you want to buy tickets, you can buy them here.

25 quick and helpful Shanghai travel tips (2024)

Shanghai is hands down one of the most buzzing cities in the world and it’s one of my personal favorites.

You probably hear this a lot, but Shanghai really does have everything.

It’s got amazing food, shopping, culture, architecture, history… the list goes on.

But despite all of these amazing features, it’s still different to western countries and can be confusing for first timers and experienced travelers alike.

So, to make your trip smoother, here are the top Shanghai travel tips that I’ve put together after numerous trips to this incredible city.

1. Eat your way around the world

chinese food in shanghai

Eat Chinese food or international cuisine in Shanghai – take your pick. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

The food in Shanghai is so damn good, and has always satisfied my hungry stomach. (I’m not ashamed to say that I travel for the food as much as the sights.)

I ate Mongolian food for the first time while I was in Shanghai. Previously, I hadn’t even known that Mongolian food was a thing.

I still think about the cheesy, meaty goodness at that restaurant!

But if you want to sink your teeth into something local, my favorite kinds of Shanghai dumplings are:

  • Xiao long bao (小笼包), delicate little things that have a soup broth inside
  • Sheng jian (生煎) which are fried pork dumplings with a crispy base.

They’re both so delicious that I wrote an entire article about how good the dumplings in China are  (you can check it out later).

My advice while you’re in Shanghai is to get out of your comfort zone and try everything. Watch where the locals go and what they eat.

2. See if visa-free travel applies to you

To be able to sink your teeth into a Shanghai dumpling, you’ll need to make sure you get here in the first place!

Like most travelers to Shanghai, you’ll probably have to get a visa before you visit.

And depending on where you live, the visa process can be difficult or time-consuming, so I recommend getting started early. Not the week before you leave!

However, if you’re on a short trip (on the way to another country), then it’s worth knowing that Shanghai has a 144-Hour Visa-Free Transit policy.

apps banned in china

Passport holders from a bunch of countries can enjoy 144 hours in Shanghai without having to get a visa.

So, if you’re on your way to somewhere else, you could spend up to 6 days in Shanghai without going through any extra paperwork trouble.

Some of the countries included under this rule are:

  • Germany and many European countries
  • New Zealand

Interestingly, some large countries like India and Malaysia do not enjoy this privilege, and you’ll need to apply for a tourist visa regardless of the length of your stay.

You can check your eligibility for Visa Free Transit by tapping here.

Note that this opens up in a new window (it’s an official Chinese government site).

3. Get a VPN

vpn is needed for shanghai

Access banned websites and apps in Shanghai with a VPN. Image by Privecstasy on Unsplash.

If you’re like most people, then you enjoy sharing images and updates about your trip as you explore. But you’ll have a lot more trouble doing that while you’re in Shanghai.

China’s firewall is real, and it will leave you unable to access sites like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Google.

Basically, the sites that you’re most likely to use to stay connected, share your holiday snaps, and find out the answers to questions (like ‘best dumpling restaurants in Shanghai’), will be completely off limits.

That’s why you’ll need a virtual private network (VPN) during your stay. And you’ll need to download it before arriving in China, otherwise you won’t be able to download it at all.

You can read a review of which VPN is best for Shanghai here or tap on the button below to get the one which The Helpful Panda recommends.

If you’re already in China and your VPN is playing up (that’s normal in China), there’s a troubleshooting guide here .

4. Don’t tip

picking up chinese yuan with chopsticks

People generally don’t tip in Shanghai. Image by AndreyCherkasov on Shutterstock.

If you’re from the United States, you’ll be used to tipping. But please don’t tip in China.

Not only do the locals not tip, service staff may feel awkward if you try and slip them a note.

There are a few little exceptions to the ‘no tipping’ rule, so I suggest you read this article that Mike wrote .

5. Beware the traffic

shanghai traffic on a good day

Shanghai traffic on a good day! Image by Robert Biesewig on Pixabay.

OK, this applies all over China, but I need to put it in this list of Shanghai travel tips.

Don’t expect everyone to obey traffic laws. Red lights, cross walks, they’re more suggestions than hard and fast laws in Shanghai.

So, don’t just step out when the walk sign flashes and expect to be safe.

This applies to walking on the sidewalk too. Back home, I always think of the sidewalk as car-free and much safer to walk on.

But in Shanghai, you’ll find e-scooters and e-bikes driving like maniacs on the sidewalk, and it isn’t unusual for cars to park on the sidewalk. Keep your eyes and ears open!

6. Use a navigation app

maps app icon on phone

Using a map app will definitely help you. Image by Brett Jordan on Pexels.

Now, I’ll be the first one to tell you that Shanghai is easy to navigate.

The tourist areas are generally well-signposted and, if you get lost, the locals can speak some English.

But why rely on the locals, or even your intuition, when you can use a navigation app?

The best China map app , in my opinion, is MAPS.ME but others swear by Google using a VPN.

It’s ultimately up to you, but if you plan on using MAPS.ME just remember to download your Shanghai map before you arrive in China so you can use it offline (and not use expensive roaming data) while you’re there. Awesome.

If you use one of the Chinese map apps, like Gaode, you’ll need to be able to read Mandarin!

7. Prepare for squat toilets

chinese squat toilet

Yep, this is me photographing a squat toilet. Image supplied by Gayle Aggiss.

Shanghai gets a lot of foreign visitors, so it has facilities to match.

But if you go need to use public toilets, like at a local mall, you’ll probably be confronted with the dreaded Chinese squat toilet (boy, was it fun writing that article).

These toilets can be a bigger challenge than you might expect, especially for women. Here’s a few tips to help you survive them:

  • Carry toilet paper with you, as the toilets usually don’t have them
  • Don’t put the toilet paper down the toilet, it goes in the bin
  • Try not to look at the bin as it’s usually quite foul and overflowing
  • Bring sanitizer with you as there’s usually no soap.

If you struggle to squat, then plan your daily trips around places you know have western toilets. Or, if you can, do your business in your hotel!

8. Explore the side streets

Get off the main streets for better, cheaper food. Image by Paralaxis on Shutterstock.

In any big Chinese city, and especially Shanghai, the food is often better (and always cheaper) if you venture off the main street.

I can’t tell you how many amazing meals I’ve had in China down side streets.

9. Pack your adapter

travel adapter is needed for shanghai

This is something you shouldn’t forget to pack in your bag. Image by Edward Eyer on Pexels.

Shanghai’s power points aren’t uniform, and you’ll find A, C, and I plug sockets apparently at random.

So, make sure that you pack an adapter to match. It’s one of the best things to buy for your trip.

Side note: Check out Mike’s incredible packing list for China , which covers a lot more than power adapters!

Depending on where you’re from, you might also need a voltage converter just to make sure your electronics don’t get blown out.

10. Bring your passport on day trips

woman smiling and holding passport

It may sound obvious, but if you forget your passport then you can’t get into the tourist sites. Image by Gustavo Fring on Pexels.

Got a day trip planned for Suzhou or one of the lovely water towns?

If you’re taking the high-speed train, you’ll need to bring your passport to be able to board the train.

The locals use their national ID card to go through the electronic gates, while foreigners like you and me annoyingly have to go to the manual gate and present our passport.

Also, most tourist attractions in China require ID to get in, so even if you stay in central Shanghai, you will need your passport to get into places.

11. Use the Metro or Didi

shanghai metro sign

This is the symbol to look out for to take the subway. Image by TK Kurikawa on Shutterstock.

While we’re on the topic of trains, let’s talk about how good the Shanghai subway is.

It’s prompt, clean, and will take you all over the city (of course). And there’s a whopping 16 lines.

The Metro also connects up with Maglev train, which is the ‘magnetic levitation’ train that you can get to and from the Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

If you’d rather travel in a car while you’re in the city, then download Didi, which is China’s version of Uber.

You can literally get a ride within a few minutes from anywhere in the city.

I suggest you take a look at the other great travel apps to use in China .

12. Explore the shopping malls

Nanjing Road lit up at night

There are shopping centers in and around Nanjing Road. Image by ThewayIsee on Shutterstock.

If you’re cashed up and love shopping, then you’ll love Shanghai.

Check out this website where you can filter for shopping centers and malls based on the Metro stations you’re near.

I’m not a big shopper myself, so wandering down East Nanjing Road is enough for me.

13. Stay near attractions

The Bund with people dancing with fans in foreground

I recommend staying near The Bund as that’s where many of the main attractions are. Image by Adli Wahid on Unsplash.

Although Shanghai is China’s largest city, it’s remarkably walkable.

But this doesn’t mean that you’ll want to walk for miles every day while you’re there, especially if you’re only in Shanghai for a few days.

To avoid this, consider staying near the attractions you most want to see. This will cut down on your transport times and costs as well as shoe leather.

You can check out some great hotels in Shanghai by tapping on the button below.

Obviously if you’re on a packaged tour you don’t need to worry about this. But Shanghai is the easiest place in China to travel solo .

Oh, and fun fact: the population of Shanghai is about the same as the whole of Australia, where I’m from.

14. Use a translation app

chinese and english speech bubbles

A translation app is an indispensable tool for Shanghai. Image by Lars Poyansky on Shutterstock.

There’s more English in Shanghai than in any other city in China, but this doesn’t mean that everyone speaks English or that everyone will understand you.

Taxi drivers in particular often don’t speak English and this can make getting around difficult.

To overcome this issue, use a translation app on your phone. Pleco is a good one, but there are plenty of others.

I like using trusty Google Translate, but just remember you’ll need a VPN in Shanghai to use any of Google’s services.

If you’re a bit old school, or a bit old (sorry mum!), then at least make sure you have the hotel’s address on a business card or written down somewhere in Chinese characters.

That way, you can just hand it to a taxi driver and be on your merry way.

15. Get out of the city

wet tourists standing under umbrellas in zhouzhuang water town

Getting wet in Zhouzhuang Water Town! Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

One of the best Shanghai travel tips that I can give you is to get out of the city if you can.

This will give you a break from the noise and the lights and there are also some absolutely amazing places really close to Shanghai that are well worth seeing.

If you’re not part of a tour group, take advantage of the bullet trains and go!

Here’s where I recommend that you visit:

  • Hangzhou, for lake cruises and tea (1 hour from Shanghai Hongqiao by train)
  • Suzhou, for beautiful gardens (30 minutes by train)
  • Nanjing , where you can experience China’s ancient capital (75 minutes by train).

There are also some picture-perfect ancient water towns within easy reach of the city:

  • Zhujiajiao Water Town (40 minutes by Metro, then walk)
  • Tongli Water Town (75 minutes by car, or take train to Suzhou)
  • Zhouzhuang Water Town (90 minutes by car).

Just remember to bring your passport to board the bullet trains, as I mentioned in tip number 7.

16. Don’t drink the water

bottled drinks at chinese supermarket

Only drink bottled water in China. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

This may seem like an obvious one, but the consequences of forgetting are pretty dire, so I’m including it.

Do not drink the tap water while you’re in Shanghai. Drink bottled water at all times and use it to brush your teeth as well.

You don’t want to spend all of your short time in Shanghai being sick, so don’t risk it.

17. Avoid Shanghai in summer

chinese street vendor wearing protective clothing for summer

Everyone covers up in Shanghai in the summer. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

Autumn and spring are the best times to visit the city as the weather is mostly very pleasant.

But even winter is fairly mild and comfortable for most (there’s no snow in Shanghai).

In contrast, summers can be intense. Between June and August, you can expect temperatures around 86-95°F (30-35°C) or even as high as 104°F (40°C).

Combine these temperatures with all of the city’s glass and metal plus high humidity, and it can lead to a lot of hot, sticky days.

If you have choice over travel dates, I recommend booking your trip for the other seasons.

Check out the page on the best time to visit Shanghai and Beijing .

18. Reconsider that trip to Disneyland

shanghai disney resort castle

Think twice if you want to use your time in Shanghai by visiting Disney Resort. Image by Woshinidayess on Pixabay.

Look, I need to be honest and tell you I haven’t been to Shanghai Disney Resort. I’m not really an amusement parks kind of girl.

But hearing from friends who have been there, all I’ll say is have a big hard think if you want to spend an entire day at Shanghai Disney.

It’s expensive, there are long queues, and in my opinion, plenty of other better places to visit!

Only go there if you’re a massive fan.

19. See the best tourist sights

French Concession outdoor cafe in Shanghai

The French Concession is a lovely area to explore. Image by Robert Mullan on Shutterstock.

Only in Shanghai for a few days?

Then here are the best places where everyone typically goes:

  • The Bund, which is the huge, lovely waterfront and a true Shanghai landmark
  • Pudong skyline, which you can see from the Bund or you can go up one of the towers (see below)
  • Nanjing Road for large stores and malls
  • Yuyuan Garden for traditional Chinese gardens (see below)
  • Jing’an temple for a more peaceful experience in the city
  • Former French Concession , where there are cafes and leafy trees
  • Xintiandi and Huaihai Road for upmarket shopping and dining
  • Puxi District if you’re into nightlife.

Note: Try to avoid public holidays and weekends if you can.

Also, the Chinese are night owls, so if you get somewhere when it opens, you’ll beat the hordes (well, at least for the first hour).

20. Go up a tower

Shanghai World Financial Center covered in fog

There’s so much fog that you can only see the top of the Bottle Opener. Image by Jeremy Zhu on Pixabay.

I say ‘a’ tower as there are so many options!

But if you like observation decks like I do, then you could try a few:

  • Shanghai Tower is China’s tallest building, and one of the world’s tallest buildings
  • Shanghai World Financial Center, the second tallest building in the city which looks like a big bottle opener
  • Jin Mao Tower, which is nestled between the two above
  • Oriental Pearl TV Tower Observation Deck, one of the futuristic buildings on the banks of the Huangpu River.

They’re all in Pudong, so you could literally tower-hop your way through this district.

The Oriental Pearl Tower is the original tall structure in Pudong, but now looks a little dwarfed next to the other monstrosities.

Note: You’ll only get spectacular views on days where there’s no smog or clouds.

Otherwise, you’ll see absolutely nothing (well, except smog and clouds).

21. Beware of strangers at Yuyuan Garden

yu garden pagoda and pond

There’s a known scam that happens near the Yu Garden. Image by Laurette Chapuis on Pixabay.

Shanghai, like the rest of China, is very safe and especially for foreign tourists.

However, there’s a common scam near the busiest tourist attractions in China, that being the Yu Garden in Shanghai and the Forbidden City in Beijing.

Basically, someone (usually a woman) with excellent English will start talking to you, and once she’s built your trust, she’ll invite you to a teahouse.

The only thing is – the tea will cost an astronomical price per cup, and you’ll only find this out once you’ve downed half a dozen of them.

And, you’ll be locked inside the teahouse until you pay! So, never ever accompany a stranger to a teahouse in China.

22. Use mobile payments but carry cash

chinese woman scanning a phone for payment

Everyone in Shanghai uses their phone to pay. Image by Humphery on Shutterstock.

Shanghai is mostly a cashless city, with most hotels, shops, and attractions relying on mobile payments.

Lots of shops may even refuse to take large bills because they can’t give you change. This means you should prepare other ways to pay other than cash.

Download WeChat Pay or Alipay and set it up with your card before you go.

Seriously, no one uses cash anymore in China!

23. Get your coffee fix (hopefully)

holding a cup of Luckin coffee outside the coffee shop

Some coffee shops don’t accept cash or even have customer service. Image by Sarunyu L on Shutterstock.

While I’m on the topic of payment apps, you’ll find that some of the coffee shops in Shanghai (I’m looking at you, Luckin Coffee) only take app orders.

The apps are only in Mandarin, and you’ll need a Master’s degree on how to order. And that’s assuming you’ve already set up your foreign card on WeChat Pay or Alipay.

You might need to ‘shop around’ for a coffee shop that will take your cash order, otherwise head to a Starbucks.

At least you won’t go thirsty in the country’s biggest city. Shanghai has the most coffee shops in the world (you can see more crazy facts about China here .)

24. Take a boat ride on the Huangpu

tourists on Huangpu River cruise at the Bund

Find your feet in the city by doing a river cruise. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

I like being around water. I’m Australian.

So, if you’re anything like me and you need some respite from all the concreteness that is Shanghai, take a boat ride on the Huangpu River.

There are a few options leaving from The Bund area, and it’s nice to see the city from a different angle.

25. Go further

woman on platform while chinese bullet train is arriving

Take the high-speed to explore other parts of China. Image supplied by Mike Cairnduff.

I’ll finish with this tip.

If you want to visit other Chinese cities, I recommend taking the high-speed train.

For relatively short distances, the train is always cheaper than flying, but even on longer distances it can be just as good.

For example, you can get from Shanghai to Beijing in under five hours on the bullet train. You cut out all the stress and extra time needed at the airport for security and whatnot.

And, domestic flights in China can be relatively expensive.

Psst! Last travel tip

I mentioned at the start how all the major foreign sites and apps are blocked in China.

So, I’m reminding you before you go off and have a cup of tea!

If you want to use the internet in China using hotel Wi-Fi, then you’ll need to get a VPN on your devices.

Check out this review or tap on the button below for the recommended one.

Just remember to download it before you arrive, as VPN sales are blocked in China.

You’ll have a great time in Shanghai

This huge, exciting city is perfect for giving you a quick taste of all that China has to offer. It’s remarkably safe as well, making it a great option for first timers to China.

Unfortunately, even with the best Shanghai travel tips in the world, you may still find yourself shocked and uncertain when you first visit the city (e.g. the public toilets may get you).

So, keep these travel tips in mind, but be open to the new and unfamiliar. Because they’ll definitely make the best stories when you get back home.

And finally, don’t forget to try the delicious soup dumplings. I’m so envious already!

Let me know if you have any questions in the comments area below. And be sure to get your VPN before you leave . Bon voyage and safe travels.

Tips and faq about shanghai travel, what do i need to know before going to shanghai.

The most important things are to see if you’re eligible for Visa Free Transit and to get a VPN before you jet off. You should also set up WeChat Pay or Alipay because the city is almost cashless.

What is the best way to explore Shanghai?

Use the Metro which has a whopping 16 lines and numerous interchanges.

How many days is enough for Shanghai?

You could rush through it within a few days, but if you want to explore the water towns and nearby cities (like Suzhou, Hangzhou, etc), then a week would be ideal.

Is Shanghai an expensive city to visit?

Yes, compared to other Chinese cities. But a trip to Shanghai won’t totally break the bank, provided you eat local Chinese food, stay at three-star hotels, and don’t splurge too much at the shopping malls!

25 Content Ideas

Even if you are not an influencer yet (or you never plan to be!), coming up with a good hashtag strategy will help you connect to this world a little better. Once you’ve got your own system down it is super easy, too! You want to keep it unique so it won’t get buried in between other’s posts, and a good way to do that is to use a variation of topics. It is said between 5-15 is the optimal number of hashtags to have in your post, but you can add up to 30 if you feel inclined. You will want to use some referring to travel, some others specific to the setting your in, some specific to solo/couple/family travel, and lastly your destination.

Best Travel Hashtags

Creating a Hashtag Strategy:

The thing I like to do when adding travel hashtags to my post, is having a mixture of three different levels of hashtags.

Level 1: Very Popular Hashtags –

These are hashtags that are super popular and while it is unlikely you will show up at the top of that hashtags feed, if you do get at the top of the hashtag’s explore page you will get an explosion of likes and followers. I have had the forune of having this happen early in my Instagram and it really jump-started my account.

Golden Gate Bridge

Level 2: Popular But Doable:

The next level of hashtags are ones that are used often (10,000 – 100,000 times) but not the super popular hashtags. These are great because they reach a good size audience and you have a chance to end up at the top of that travel hashtags explore page.

Level 3: Niche Hashtags

I love niche travel hashtags because honestly, these are often my most engaged followers. While the numbers on these hashtags are not huge the followers you gain are so engaged. I once got hundreds of followers because I used the #disneybeachclubresort while I was in Disney World. It only had about 1000 people who used the hashtag, but those looking to stay at the resort were so engaged with my content.

Top Hashtags

Grand Wailea Luau

These may seem a little basic to you, but these are must-haves in your travel posts. Trying variations is often a good idea. For example, #travelers will probably get your post more attention than #travel because it’s unique. Like we said above, you will want to pair your travel hashtags with some tags more specific to you as well but we will start here!

Destination Specific Hashtags

Weird Things to do in Portland

One of the most common questions asked in Instagram comments is “Where are you?” because people are intrigued by experiences they might be interested in. The other reason hashtagging your location is strategic is that you will see both locals and other visitors drawn to like your post. You will want to be both general and specific with your location hashtags. For instance, you could use #mexico and #tulum. You may even want to just type in the city or region name and see what comes up!

Below I’ve listed some of the places we’ve been recently to showcause you really can find a city specific hashtag almost anywhere you go. (Remember, don’t forget to add some niche travel hashtags while you are posting about these amazing destinations)

Instagram Travel Hashtags – The complete guide.

This guide is for you if you are an instagrammer a looking for the options for the travel hashtags.

Instagram Travel Hashtags

If you are tired of figuring out what hashtags to use while posting your travel photos then you have reached to right spot. In this post we will be covering in detail about the Travel Hashtags for Instagram and which one to use while posting your travel content on Instagram.

We will also be sharing the Hashtags around different categories and reach on Instagram so that you can choose and pick the hashtags which is for you.

Researching Instagram hashtags is boring! There, I said it for you. You probably enjoy taking amazing photos and sharing them with edgy captions to make your friends envious. But I doubt strategizing an effective hashtags strategy so you can amplify your reach is on your “fun-to-do list”.

A quick guide on how to get ranked as a top post in your favourite hashtag feeds

I researched 400+ travel hashtags for Instagram; So today I’m going to share 400+ Travel Hashtags for Instagram. So grab a cup of coffee because it’s a bit quiet lengthy: Feel free to follow us on Instagram Chasing Whereabouts and drop a message saying that you followed me from here.

How your Instagram Travel Hashtags Strategy should look like?

Without teaching you how to use them, there’s no point in delivering a bunch of hashtags and letting you loose on the social network environment.

Great responsibility comes with great hashtags. It seems to be trivial, but mastering Instagram hashtags can build or break an account’s growth.

In your chosen hashtags, the aim of the game is to rank as a top post. By staying in the top 9 posts for a few hours or even a few days, this will amplify your scope and maximize your visibility. If you rank as one of the’ Top Posts’ successfully, the more posts in the feed, the better. However since popular hashtag feeds are highly competitive, this is not inherently good advice. You will get a few fast likes by using hashtags millions reach, but with an endless sequence of new posts, yours will vanish in seconds from the feed.

To increase your chances of ranking as a top post, depending on your interaction ratio, target feeds with less than 300k or less than 1 m posts. In smaller hashtags, when you rank as a top post, your engagement can snowball and you are likely to be included in larger feeds.

Start low and Aim high.

  • 10 hashtags with feeds of < 250k posts
  • 10 hashtags with feeds of < 500k posts
  • 8 hashtags with feeds of < 1m posts
  • 2 hashtags with feeds of > 1m posts

In case you want to take an alternate strategy you can use this option as well

Instagram allows you to use max 30 hashtag in one post. So use them smartly:

  • 8 Hashtag with more than 1M+ feeds
  • 10 Hashtag with 100K to 1M feeds
  • 5 Hashtag with less than 100K feeds
  • Now you left with 7 hashtags use them for a location or to define the post or as your mood.

Instagram Travel Hashtags

Here we go!

P.S. You can always skip to the end of each section to copy and paste my hashtags into your next Instagram post.

How Many Travel Hashtags should I Use?

This is one debatable topic where everyone has their own personal preference but I have seen most of the travel Instagrammer using the complete 30 hashtags to exploit the option available.

Many Instagram experts suggest 11 hashtag is best for attracting new followers and it best for engagement. But I’m a fan of using all 30 hashtags sometimes it looks spammy but you can use the hashtag in comments as well. There is no difference in their functionality if you use hashtag in comments and captions in both cases it works same.

So you can post the picture with around 10 hashtags or so and write down the remaining hashtags quickly as your first comment.

One new strategy for Instagram travel hashtags which I use is that I post the content with 10-15 hashtags in starting for it to rank and once the post ranks on the City/Country hashtags and then it starts ranking everywhere else. This worked with my frankfurt post.

What is the trick of curating Photo related Travel Hashtags?

This will come as another strategy for deciding the travel hashtags to use for your next post on Instagram. Let us discuss the CW strategies of Instagram Post. Now the only reason why I am saying CW is that its Chasing Whereabouts .

You should know the W and G of the image which you are posting.

  • Where – Where are you

It is best to use the location related hashtags in your picture. Where stands for that. Use the location hashtags for City/Village/town and the country.

  • What (what are you doing)

What defines about the activity you are doing in the image. Usually just one hashtag as # walking , # trekking , # cycling , etc

  • When (which special day, if any)

I add one hashtag however only if it is a memorable day like # nye  or # germanunityday #diwali #independanceday  or any other day that the photo is about.

Why are you adding the photo? Describe the image with few hashtags (4-5) as:

# market  # building  # street  # tram  # river #sunset  # awesome  # lovely  # amazing  etc

The fantastic thing of Instagram is that meanwhile, you write the hashtag you get a suggestion and the volume; stay below a 10M volume, if you have a choice. If you are a new blogger then stay below 100K.

  • Get Ambitious

Add the two popular travel hashtags as discussed above (# travelphotography  and # travelling )

Add two travel hashtags used by the local tourism boards (usually city/area and country). This is the most important step. You may have a great outcome if they love your photo and re-post it, which usually gives wide visibility of your work. You may wake up the day after and have suddenly hundreds more of followers, just thanks to a re-post.

How do you find these local travel hashtags?

You need to google the travel tourism board website and see their Instagram account. Usually, they are the verified account with the name. You can also look for the city name and use the tag for the account which has the maximum followers on it.

  • Get technical

Describe the type of photo from a technical perspective if you wish. Popular hashtags are #landscape #portrait #closeup etc. This is the least favourite of all and you can use it if you are running out of hashtags.

Travel Hashtags with 1M+ Feeds

These are the most common and popular travel hashtags on Instagram and the hardest to rank on top as well. So use them smartly or I’ll say use them for getting quick likes & comments, because when we are talking about engagement then how much to time to get the number of likes & comments also matter:

Travel Hashtags with 100k to 1M Feeds

Some are more useful but less generic. Now, compared to the above list, you have a greater opportunity to rank at the top of hashtags by using these hashtags. A lower number indicates a lower level of competition:

Travel Hashtags with less than 100K Feeds

As the number tells these are less generic as compare to above list but more effective for the long term engagement:

Travel Hashtags On the basis of Location

When you post a stunning picture on Instagram then your follower or who saw your post desperately wants to where is this destination? Where are you? So for this, you can use destination-specific hashtags:

Travel Hashtags On the basis of Moment

What good way is to describe a moment than mere words. Some photos are like wow, amazing or awesome etc. So with these hashtags you can define your emotions or moment:

Lifestyle Travel Hashtags

Evergreen Travel Hashtags

Travel Hashtags based on Types

In this section of the post, I will tell about some of the Travel Hashtags based of the types, like General Travel Hashtags, Blogging, Work and Travel , Hotels and Luxury, Miscellaneous.

General Travel Hashtags –

Now let us talk about these above mentioned general travel hashtags and when can you use them in your post.

  • #Wandelust – This particular hashtag is currently scaling up to 125m post on Instagram. Now it doesn’t make sense to use this if you are just starting because there is going to be excessive competition on this one.
  • #adventureseeker – This particular hashtag is currently scaling up to 1.8m on Instagram. Instead of popular posts like #adventure and #wanderlust, try smaller hashtags like #adventureseeker to give you more chance in ranking as a top post.

  • #travelmore – Another one in the range of 6m usage on Instagram.

200 Travel Hashtags to Grow Followers & Get Featured on Instagram

200 Travel Hashtags to Grow Followers & Get Featured on Instagram

Last Updated on February 22, 2022 by Michela

One of the best ways to get noticed on Instagram is by using hashtags. Instead of sending your post out to your followers and blindly hoping for it to go viral, you can add hashtags to put your post out to users all over the platform looking for your relevant content! Putting in the work and finding those gem travel hashtags that get you discovered is time-consuming, so I’m sharing my secrets and research to bring you the best hashtags for travel !

You can use travel hashtags for a variety of reasons. Maybe you want to grow your following. Or, you want big accounts to feature you. You could even have a product or website you are trying to get noticed and need to target a specific audience!

Travel hashtags lend themselves to having a lot of sub-categories because the interest is so wide. From solo travel to girl’s travel to budget travel and more, you can target the specific audience that would want to follow you or visit your site by narrowing your focus in your hashtags.

That’s why I’ve broken down the hashtags into categories that are niche-specific to make it easier to identify which fit your Instagram goals!

To make all of this even easier for you, I’m making available my Travel Hashtag Master List as part of The Travel Library . It’s free to access and I’m constantly doing travel hashtag research for new destinations I visit!

How Travel Hashtags Work

Adding hashtags to your photos means anyone following that hashtag has the chance to see it and that there’s a greater chance to pop up on someone’s Explore page who Instagram thinks will like your content!

That’s great because if the user is already interested in your travel niche, they will be more likely to follow you!

Number of Hashtags Per Post

You can add up to 30 hashtags per post , either in the caption itself or as a comment If you choose the latter, you should add your comment right after if it’s posted so Instagram can start pushing out your post to other accounts.

There’s no magic number to hashtag use (that we know of) so if you can use all 30 slots, the more chances you have of your post ranking on one of the hashtags!

Hashtag Volume

Another important thing to keep in mind is how many times that hashtag has been used . For example, #travel has been used five-hundred and sixty-six MILLION times. So, that’s a lot of competition to go up against.

Hashtags that have fewer posts attached to them can be easier to get your photos featured on. Hashtags with millions of posts may be a bit more difficult.

While you’re growing, use a mix of low to medium-volume hashtags so you have the best chance of your content getting out there. As you grow bigger, high-volume hashtags may be easier for you to rank for!

To help decide which travel hashtags may work best for your account, this huge list is sorted by hashtag volume! You’ll find categories for hashtags used under 100,000 times, under 500,000 times, under 1 million times, and over 1 million times.

As mentioned, for growing accounts its probably best to take most of your hashtags from the under 100k and under 500k lists.

There are obviously other important aspects to growing on Instagram but hashtags are one of the most powerful tools. Hopefully, my own hashtag research will be a benefit to your Instagram growth and save you time to focus on your content !

Travel Hashtags for Features

An important way to get noticed on Instagram is to get featured on bigger accounts. The travel niche has many accounts that get their content just by reposting other people’s posts.

Some accounts will ask you DM them for a feature, others will accept monetary compensation to feature your post. But the best kind of feature is when your post gets picked up by that account’s hashtag!

It’s the free and easy way to have a chance at getting reposted on a larger account and getting your work in front of your target audience.

Tools for Finding Travel Hashtags & Doing Your Own Research

If all those Instagram hashtags for travel aren’t enough for you, then no worries. I have tips to share to help you do your own travel hashtag research!

Travel Hashtag Master List

Firstly, sign up to The Travel Library to gain access to my Travel Hashtag Master List. It’s free and I am constantly doing my own travel hashtag research and adding to this list!

Preview App

shanghai travel hashtag

Secondly, you could download the Instagram planning app Preview . Built-in to this app is a tool called find hashtags . This platform has created hashtag groups that are ready to be added to your post!

You can plan your feed within the app and upload or schedule both your caption and hashtags with your photo to Instagram.

This feature is only available if you pay for the premium version of the app. But, it’s a way to save lots of time by automating the hashtag research process.

Instagram Search

Thirdly, use the Instagram search to find related hashtags. This is where you should start for your own travel hashtag research. Start typing away words related to your niche and jotting down what hashtags come up (including their volume!)

Make sure to at least click on the hashtag to see what kinds of posts are ranking. If they don’t fit your brand or the kinds of photos you post, it may not be the most relevant and worthy hashtag for you to use.

For example, don’t use #girlstravel if your photo doesn’t have a girl in it – it won’t rank!

Post Hunting in Hashtag Pages

shanghai travel hashtag

Fourthly, go to the page of a travel hashtag you think you can rank for simply by clicking on the hashtag. You’ll find all the top and recent posts and can tap on those posts to what hashtags they are using. Then starts a cycle of finding more and more relevant travel hashtags!

If no posts appear when you search for a hashtag, that means it’s blocked by the Instagram community. Using that hashtag will be useless for growth, so skip it!

You can also take a look at competitors’ posts in your niche to see what kinds of hashtags they are using.

Final Thoughts

I hope this post is a great resource to you and allows you to spend more time creating content than searching for hashtags.

It’s true that as much content as we create, it doesn’t mean anything if it isn’t shared! So having a travel hashtag library and strategy is extremely important.

Are Travel Hashtags a Good Idea?

Using travel hashtags on your posts will ensure that you'll get more likes and engagement, because your photos will be seen by the people who want to see travel photos like yours.

Using the right travel hashtags is especially important for Instagram Reels posts and Tiktok posts. These kinds of posts are currently enjoying much more "discovery" and delivery to broader audiences.

We've paid extra attention to Hashtags for Instagram Reels and Hashtags for TikTok. Using the right hashtags for Instagram Reels and hashtags for Tiktok can help your content land on the Explore #Explore and #FYP (For You Page) pages and explode your views.

It's easy to find the most obvious and popular hashtags for travelling. People use the hashtag #travel all the time. But it is so overused that posts with this tag are often off topic, and lost in the avalanche of new posts constantly flowing in.

How to Choose the BEST Travel Hashtags

Think about a search term you might type into google, and what you would expect from the results. If you merely typed in "travel" you would not be likely to find posts about specific places, activities, and things you are looking for.

Searches are more successful when they are more specific. Posts are more successful when they use more specific hashtags. Finding the hashtags can be tricky though.

That's why we made this travel hashtag list for all your vacation Instagram and travel Tiktok posts.

PRO TIP: Hashtags are not just for getting likes, views and engagement on your own posts. Travel hashtags are the best place to start doing your own travel research. You will find recent and up to date photos and information. Oftentimes these posts are from locals and experts. You will find valuable tips, tricks and insights about a destination by doing research on Instagram and Tiktok as well as traditional research. Travel guides and blog posts are a great idea, but the freshest information about a location may be on social media.

Be sure to bookmark this post so you can return to copy/ paste travel hashtags! Our lists are constantly growing and updating.

Travel Hashtag Ideas for Your Posts

Travel hashtags can be broken down into many categories.

  • People in the photo - Who are the travelers in the photo? Do you belong to any special group of travelers or travel "tribes"? Example: #familytravel #digitalnomads #couples travel
  • Brands in the photo - Official local tourism/branded hashtags and/or gear. Example: #visitcalifornia #celebritycruise #Raybans
  • Places in the photo . Example: #Airport, #LuxuryHotel
  • Activities being done in the photo or on the vacation . Example: #hiking #yoga #winetasting
  • Seasons and holidays. Example: #SummerVacation #SpringBreak #WinterHoliday
  • Travel Themes . Example: #Getaway, #Glamping, #Spaholiday
  • Photography hashtags . Example: #travelcaptures #travelpicsdaily
  • Moods . Example: #HappyCamper, #VacationVibes

Why Hashtags Matter on Social Media

Hashtags are like the address on a letter. They tell social media platforms where/who to deliver your post to.

Everytime we like or comment on anything, algorithms are paying attention. They learn what we like, and aim to deliver more of that sort of content to us.

In order to deliver the right content to the right people, Algorithms need to know what a piece of content is about, and who it's meant for. Hashtags make that crystal clear.

Questions to Ask When Choosing Hashtags for Travel Posts

Asking yourself a few questions about your hashtags can help you be super targeted with your tag choices, and avoid hashtag spamming.

If someone were specifically searching for this hashtag, would they be delighted to find your post? Is it the content they are likely looking for?

If the answer is YES, then this a good hashtag choice.

Do the hashtags you've chosen make sense together and support each other?

If the answer is NO you may want to get rid of any extra tags. Stick to a single niche or theme to avoid confusing algorithms. Recent algorithm trends have shown that posts that stick to a single subject and closely related hashtags, tend to do better.

Are any of the hashtags sarcastic, cute or made up on the spur of the moment?

Lose these fast!

Are you using super popular, over-used hashtags?

These probably won't hurt you, but they are are unlikely to help you in Instagram feed. One or two carefully chosen popular tags may be helpful for directing Instagram Reels and Tiktok posts. Hashtags for Instagram Reels and Hashtags for TikTok are extremely important for discovery but should be super concise and used sparingly.

Do my hashtags identify a specific group of people for whom this content is relevant?

Hashtags like #FamilyTravel and #CouplesTravel and #LuxuryTraveler help further refine your travel audience and are a great idea when they are your primary focus. Niche-ing down is a great way to build engagement.

But don't use multiple groups in one post or you may defeat the purpose of the tag. Pick a team and use multiple tags for that one group rather than spread yourself too thin.

Have you included any "mood" hashtags?

While we don't have evidence to support it, it doesn't hurt to include a few hashtags with positive terms like "Happy", "Dream" "Vibes" etc in them.

Algorithms don't do feelings and rely on language signals like this to identify posts as positive or negative. Humans also react to positive messaging. So if you have the space, sprinkle some positivity.

Have you looked at the hashtag feed for that hashtag? Do you belong there?

Sometimes we think we know what a hashtag is all about... and then we look at the feed and have to take a moment. It's a good idea to get a look at the feeds you're trying to fit yourself into. If your post doesn't resonate with the audience there, or if the content is not what you think it is, you might be hurting your chances for discovery.

How Many Hashtags to Use in 2023

There is no magic formula for how many hashtags to use on social media. Other than the limits imposed by the platforms, the number is up to you. The most important thing about hashtag use with current social algorithms is to commit to your theme or niche for each post.

Consistent hashtag use and subject matter in your posting helps you to grow your authority on that subject.

When you are hashtagging a travel post, you should stick to travel hashtags and preferably clusters that are often used together such as location travel hashtags or activity type hashtags.

At one time it was ok to use any hashtags on Instagram that were accurate for your photo, even if the hashtags were unrelated to one another. The more the merrier. Currently this practice is not working. Clarity is key. Algorithms are favoring authoritative content that is easy to classify and understand.

This means that using hashtags for pets, books, fashion and beauty, along with travel hashtags (even when all those "items" are present in a photo) may result in the algorithm dropping your post for possibly hashtag spamming.

Hashtags for Tiktok and Hashtags for Instagram Reels need to be even more specific and concise.

When in doubt, pick tags from 2-3 of the above travel hashtag lists. Review the questions above and hashtag with confidence!

Why These Travel Hashtags?

Travel tags are constantly changing and evolving. In fact these 1500+ travel hashtags are just the tip of the iceberg. There are hundreds of thousands more out there, and many more travel topics to explore.

We gathered these hashtags over the course of several years, looking at some of the most engaged and visible hashtags on multiple social media platforms.

The Ultimate Guide To Instagram Hashtags: Travel Edition

The other day, I posted a blog on gaining Instagram followers which ended up becoming my most-read post on this site. I figured I’d try switching it up from my usual travel blogs and writing a few more posts on social media growth, which has been my area of expertise long before I started traveling frequently.

Since I started with my travel page on Instagram , I have experimented with hundreds of travel hashtags and have basically narrowed it down. I have about 15 travel hashtags that I use for every post and then enjoy a little bit of freedom with the other 15 to use based on location and the content of the picture.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by eli solidum | 📍 mexico 🇲🇽 (@thepartyingtraveler)

In case you missed my post on gaining Instagram followers,  I covered how crucial hashtags are to growing your Instagram following. You can use up to 30 hashtags on a post, and by using the 5 dot trick, no one will even notice the annoying block of hashtag text on your post.

Anyway, this post will be relatively brief as hashtag usage is pretty self-explanatory. It’ll be as comprehensive of a list as I can come up with, but obviously, everyone is going to have different accounts and therefore have different combinations that will work best for them. However, you can never go wrong with certain travel hashtags, and these are some of my favorites.

UPDATE: Instagram has enacted some changes to limit hashtag usage. Read my updated guide here for details on the changes and how to adapt

For travel photos in general:.

Any variant of the words “travel,” “explore,” or “wander”.

  • #Travel #Traveling #Travelers #Traveler #Explore #Exploring #Explorer #Wander #Wanderer #Wanderlust

You can add any word to travel honestly.

  • #TravelBug #SoloTravel #TravelBlogger #TravelPhotography #TravelDiary #TravelersJournal #TravelLife #TravelPics #TravelTips #TravelGirls #TravelMore #TravelAddict

I’ll get to location later in this post, but adding location after  #Travel or #Explore  also make for good hashtags

  • #TravelUSA #TravelEurope #TravelPH #ExploreCanada #ExploreAustralia

Adding “insta” or “gram” as a prefix and suffix, respectively, are also popular hashtags.

  • #Travelgram #Travelingram #InstaTravel #InstaTraveler #InstaExplore #InstaPassport

Taking advantage of daily hashtags is also a good idea. Most days have their own theme, but for travelers, the best ones would probably be:

  • #TravelTuesday #WanderlustWednesday #ThrowbackThursday #FlashbackFriday #SelfieSaturday #SelfieSunday .

Some don’t really fall into clean categories but some good miscellaneous hashtags include:

  • General terms related to travel like #Passport #Vacation #Paradise #Trips #Tripstagram #RoundTheWorld
  • Random hashtags that gained popularity a while ago and remain popular like  #DoYouTravel #TravelWithMe #TravelDeeper
  • #PicOfTheDay #PhotoOfTheDay  are extremely general but extremely popular hashtags.

Using Location Hashtags To Your Advantage

When you’re traveling, you’ll be all over the world. People are always looking through hashtags to see what might be going on in a certain part of the world or to fuel their wanderlust. Always dedicate a few hashtags to where you currently are.

  • #Europe #Eurotrip #France #Paris #EiffelTower #TourEiffel

Adding “insta” or “gram” work well here also, as well as “igers” to signify that you are an Instagrammer in that area. As always, you can’t go wrong with using #Travel either.

  • #InstaParis #IGersParis #Parisgram #IGersFrance #InstaFrance #Francestagram #Europegram #IGersEurope #InstaEurope
  • #TravelParis #TravelFrance #TravelEurope

Getting Featured By Larger Accounts

There are tons of large travel accounts on Instagram. Some are large travel companies and brands, others are accounts that just became big as an aggregator of other people’s submitted pictures. While it kind of sucks to let larger accounts use your photography (and get way more likes than you), it can be a good way to get followers. I’ve had photography featured by GoPro, BBC, and The Guardian, as well as dozens of city-specific or country-specific accounts.

Some popular hashtags to try and get featured by larger accounts (or just get more exposure in general) can be:

  • #NatGeoTravel #NatGeoYourShot #ForbesTravelGuide #BBCTravel #GuardianTravelSnaps #PassionPassport #TravelStoke #BeautifulDestinations #BestInTravel #JetJournal #GirlsWhoExplore #AwesomeEarth #AweSupply #TheGlobeWanderer #LonelyPlanet #TravelDeeper #TravelStoke #ABMTravelBug #Worlderlust #TravelAwesome #ExploringTheGlobe #CNTraveler #TravelDames

Also try to find country or city-specific accounts that are known for featuring other people’s photography in that area. For example, while I was in Peru, I was featured a number of times by @IgersCusco. I’ll use Peru as an example, but you’ll have to find different ones for every country.

  • #IgersCusco #IgersPeru #DiscoverSouthAmerica #ExperiencePeru #UnlimitedSouthAmerica

Hashtags Specific To The Picture

Hashtags can also be useful in describing the picture. Using hashtags is kind of similar to how taking advantage of the alt_text function helps SEO. Basically, by using text to describe your picture, you’re making it more likely to be found. For example, if people are looking for a picture of mountains for whatever reason,  #mountains makes it possible to narrow their search.

You can start with hashtags related directly to the scenery of the picture.

  • #Mountains #Sky #Snow #Blue #Nature #Alps #SnowCapped #Winter #Cold

Or hashtags related to the type of photography:

  • #GoPro #GoProHero #Fisheye #WideAngle #PerspectiveShot #GoProPhoto #GoProOfTheDay

I have yet to buy a real DSLR, but there are popular hashtags for popular cameras as well:

  • #Canon #Canon6D #CanonEos #CanonPhoto #CanonPhotography #CanonUSA

The hardest part of hashtags is picking just 30. You don’t want to be too general otherwise your pictures will quickly get buried by other pictures. With hundreds of millions of people using Instagram per day, you want to make sure yours stand out, so along with general hashtags, throw in some more specific, less popular ones. They’ll require more specific searches, but will be less likely to be buried as quickly.

Think of it like a Google search. If you write a blog called “Travel Tips”, people will be searching for “Travel Tips” all the time, but you’ll be competing with thousands of other (and probably more popular) websites offering travel tips. However, something titled “Ten Tips For Solo Travelers Going Backpacking For The First Time” will require a more specific search, but will have less competition. Hashtags are like titles and keywords for your photo. The better the mix, the more effective your hashtags will be.

Playing around and experimenting with hashtags is something that you’ll need to do on your own if you want to find your perfect mix. I change mine for every picture I post and it is definitely good to be flexible if you want yours to be as effective as possible. I have my hashtags pre-written on the Notes app on my iPhone, and just change a few up before I copy and paste them into a comment immediately after I post the picture. Posting your hashtags as soon as you post the picture guarantees that your picture will show up on the hashtag’s feed. If you wait too long to post it, it might already be buried by newer posts before it even gets seen.

If you up your hashtag game, you up your Instagram game. Hopefully, this guide to hashtags helps you out and helps you achieve whatever goals you might have for Instagram. Like I mentioned in my blog post on gaining Instagram followers , there is a lot of potential to make a lot of money from a large Instagram following, and hashtags will be crucial to this growth.

If this post helped you out, show some love and support for the blog and help keep my adventures going by  buying me a beer ! You have a great blog. Would you like to share your story on “What You Blog About” what motivated you to start this blog ?

Great guide here but I get fed up with Instagram changing the ways it deals with the users like limiting hashtags etc. Really does get to me.

Best Hashtags for Travel Writers and Travel Bloggers

I have an entire post devoted to the best Instagram hashtags for travel writers, hashtags for travel bloggers and hashtags for travel photographers. This post really dives into using hashtags as a travel blogger with tips, strategies, and lots of hashtag examples.

How to Copy & Paste Hashtags to Use Again and Again

The best thing to do is to create a note on an app on your phone and create different hashtag lists. You can also go back to your already posted photos on Instagram and copy the hashtags from the post using your desktop computer and paste them in your notes app or text editor to save them.

While this manual method takes some time, it’ll help you capture your favorite travel hashtags and use them again and again. It’s advisable to save them in the cloud if you lose your phone or lose data on the phone.

A hashtag list app can also help you save lots of travel hashtags on Instagram. Download one from your phone’s app store, install it, and save the hashtags. Only install hashtag listing apps that are app store certified and verified for safety. That’s because it will be tragic to lose your personal information to hackers.

How Many Instagram Hashtags to Use Per Post?

Instagram has a strict limit of 30 hashtags per post, regardless of the type of content. Your hashtags for traveling should comply with this rule if you want them to work in your favor. The limit applies to captions and comments. In this case, if your caption has 20 Instagram travel hashtags, your first comment should have up to 10 hashtags.

The hashtag limit for Instagram Stories is 10 per story. Overusing hashtags on your posts and stories may affect your credibility. Note that your credibility on Instagram largely affects how people interact with your content.

Instagram travel hashtags are an awesome way to gain followers who love travel. What is your favorite Instagram strategy?

The best Instagram Hashtags for travel. The best travel hashtags that help increase engagement and attract more followers on Instagram.

10 Travel Hashtags for Instagram Success

10 Travel Hashtags for Instagram Success

Many tourist businesses and travel influencers are finding success online through the use of social media content marketing campaigns. Clever use of travel hashtags is helping them to stay visible and relevant in an increasingly crowded market. The idea of indexing content with hashtags dates back to 2007 . That’s when social technology expert Chris Messina conceived of the idea to group tweets on the micro-blogging site Twitter. Hashtags are an especially powerful tool on Instagram, where it’s possible to use up to 30 hashtags on each post. Consider using some of these travel hashtags with your high-quality content to discover success online.

10 Top Travel Hashtags For Engagement

#wanderlust top travel hashtags

#wanderlust

The best travel hashtags find a balance between the incredibly popular and those just popular enough. That way your content gets good impressions before it’s buried under an avalanche of new content. The #wanderlust tag is incredibly popular, with over 73 million uses on Instagram. That means tagged content is going to appear in a lot of feeds, equating to a spike in impressions. But each appearance is likely to be incredibly brief. That means there are fewer opportunities for engagement with an interested audience.

#adventure top travel hashtags

Travel influencers and travel bloggers tend to focus on specific niche topics. These include reviewing hotels, the best vacations for families, or providing tips for specific destinations. A common theme is adventuring. Many people are interested in content from intrepid explorers backpacking across the country or living a nomadic life out of the back of an RV. Travel influencers with exciting stories to tell get good mileage out of #adventure (64 million uses on Instagram). The #adventureseeker tag has a similar audience but significantly fewer uses (just over 470,000). That makes it a good choice as it’s reasonably popular but still gives your content room to stand out.

#travelmore top travel hashtags

#travelmore

Many travel bloggers and influencers use social media as a platform to inspire others to see the world. That makes  #travelmore a popular tag. Similar tags include #goexplore and #roamtheplanet.

#lovetotravel top travel hashtags

#lovetotravel

The #lovetotravel tag (over 1.8 million Instagram posts) is a good one. That’s because it’s immediately clear what kind of content you’re likely to get. Tags such as #igers (instagrammers) or #l4l (like for like) which require a degree of knowledge to understand. Another reason it’s a good choice is because it works both ways. You can use it to indicate that you love to travel. And users search for it because they love to travel.

#travelblog top travel hashtags

#travelblog

If you’re a travel blogger, tags such as #blog and #blogger offer a high number of impressions. However, it’s usually a better idea to use tags that identify the subject you blog about, especially if you’re using Twitter where you have a very limited number of characters and only one or two hashtags to convey your message. The #travelblog tag has over 12 million posts on Instagram, indicating it’s still very strong, but your content is going to be much more visible than when you’re using #blog (over 30 million posts).

#travelblogging top travel hashtags

#travelblogging

There are many hashtags relating to blogging that offer a good balance between being popular while still ensuring you’re hitting the right demographic. The #travelblogging tag has over 270,000 Instagram posts, so the audience is relatively small, but there’s a good chance of engaging with some very interested readers.

#travelblogger top travel hashtags

#travelblogger

If you’re looking for a travel blogging tag with wide reach and a good chance of many impressions, #travelblogger is the one. It has over 22 million uses on Instagram. A less-popular option that still taps into the same audience is #tblogger (137,000 posts). The problem with #tblogger is that few people are likely to search for it as it’s an abbreviation of a more popular search phrase; however, it’s possible for users to find hashtag feeds by clicking on the tags that appear in posts, so this is one where it might be possible to build your audience organically , gradually encouraging an audience to migrate from the larger hashtag feeds.

#luxurytravel top travel hashtags

#luxurytravel

While some travel influencers seek adventure, others seek a quiet life of luxury , relaxing on white beaches with cocktails and traveling first class. The #luxurytravel tag is the perfect option if you produce content that focuses more on relaxation than it does on seeking out pulse-pounding adventure.

#luxuryhotel top travel hashtags

#luxuryhotel

Within the topic of luxury travel, it’s possible to be even more specific with your use of hashtags. If you’re a hotel influencer , #luxuryhotel is a good option, with over 1.3 million posts on Instagram. If you focus on all aspects of going on vacation in the best resorts, then you may find #luxuryvacation more suitable.

#solotravel top travel hashtags

#solotravel

Content marketing is all about providing answers. Every day, people are turning to the internet to find solutions. Your content needs to provide those solutions, and your hashtags need to reflect that. Traveling alone is a daunting prospect, and potentially dangerous, so it’s common for anybody thinking about going it alone to first seek some guidance online from experts. The #solotravel tag (2.8 million Instagram posts) is good for content providing hints, tips, practical solutions, shopping guides, and inspiration.

Final Thought: Everything in Moderation

Instagram may allow users to go to town with hashtags, with an allowance of up to 30 for each post, but research indicates that using around 10 per post is the sweet spot . After that, engagement starts to drop off. On Facebook and Twitter, engagement starts to drop significantly for posts using more than two tags, and it’s usually a good idea to stick to just one. Considering you only have a limited number of tags to promote your content and encourage engagement, it’s essential to pick the best travel hashtags possible. Aim to use the tags that clearly identify what you do. Remember, sometimes it’s better to start off small and develop engagement by using less-popular tags to avoid your content drowning in an ocean of competition.

What are travel hashtags?

On Instagram, a hashtag is used to connect photos that share the same or similar topic.

In other words, if you’re looking for some travel inspiration, but don’t really know where to look – you can use hashtags as a filter!

The more popular a particular hashtag is – the better your chances are of finding what you’re looking for.

However, if you are using this popular hashtag that has millions of posts, it can be more difficult to be seen.

That’s why if you want to get more engagement, it’s best to narrow down your search by adding more hashtags that are less popular so your content can be seen by more people.

Why use travel hashtags?

First and foremost, using the right hashtags will allow you to have a better reach.

Secondly, well-targeted content tends to be seen more by your ideal audience.

And hashtags make it easier for users to find you in search!

How many hashtags to use per post?

There is no exact right or wrong answer to this question.

Some people get away with using just one hashtag per post, while others use up to 30 hashtags.

The more hashtags you add – the bigger the chances are that you’ll reach a more engaged community of users!

The best way to find out what works for you is to test, test and keep testing.

If you are new on Instagram or just starting as an influencer on any social media, you might wonder what a hashtag means and why they are needed in your post. Here I will tell you the meaning of hashtags and their use. So, read along.

Why Use Hashtags On Instagram For Travel?

What Are Hashtags?

Hashtags are used in the caption section on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others to indicate a post topic or content keywords.

  • Hashtags are symbols used to tag or categorize important keywords you want your followers to identify relating to your content on your social media posts.
  • A Hashtag is written before the word or phrases you want people to identify or notice concerning a particular post or content.

Uses Of Hashtags On Instagram For Travel

Instagram is now the widely known platform used by travel bloggers, writers, and influencers to grow their audience and increase their visibility by showing their tour experiences to other users. So, you will need Travel hashtags for Instagram because of the following:

  • Makes your content accessible and organized: Using Hashtags makes your content accessible not only to your followers but also to other users who search keywords you have tagged in your post using the symbol.
  • Makes your content clickable and searchable: Hashtags make your content discovered in the feeds and clickable by users interested in them when they search showing all the public content attached to it on Instagram.
  • Content and competition research: Hashtags for travel are used on Instagram to analyze and research your competitors’ SEO content or posts, sentiments, voice, and engagement, concerning yours. This will help you to know where you fall short in your content strategies and planning and the way forward to be ahead of your competitors.

Uses Of Hashtags On Instagram For Travel

How Many Instagram Hashtags Should I Use?

The required number of Instagram hashtags to use for your travel content or any other should not be less than 5 but it should not exceed 10.

  • Including too many hashtags in the caption section of the content may appear crowded to your followers distracting them from the main objective.
  • Also, the clogged caption section may affect your post ranking according to the Instagram algorithm, but you are allowed to put as many as you want in the comment section.
  • Also, you should note that the smaller the number of your followers, the smaller the hashtag you should use, and likewise for larger followers. Using a smaller amount of hashtags when starting your page attracts new followers.

A Quick Guide On How To Get Ranked As a Top Post Using Hashtags

The most important aim of putting your post or content on Instagram and other social media platforms is to call people to action either to react to your post such as likes and comments, buy something, or any other engagement.

The best and most effective option to achieve this goal is to get ranked as the top post. Getting to the top might be difficult because there are millions of active users on Instagram posting their content daily with the same goal as you. But, it can be achievable if you follow the recommendations below;

1. Add Graphics To Your Posts

One of the ways to get your audience to notice your post is to include attractive and catching graphics or images in your content. Doing this will entice them and make them want to know what is in your content.

Add Graphics To Your Posts

2. Include Engaging Caption

Sometimes you might post a particular picture or video on your page and the audience finds it attractive but may not know what you are trying to portray.

  • A video or image without a caption may have different meanings to users based on individual perspectives.
  • An engaging caption gives a clue to what you are presenting and it also gives room for interaction between your content and your target audience.
  • The caption could be the heading or topic of your post, a question you want your follower to answer, a phrase that requires comments, etc.

3. Write Unique Contents

Create interesting and unique content that is free from copying other users. Your audience gets bored when you repeat content they might have seen on other pages multiple times. You might even be penalized when you get reported by the original owner of the post.

Write Unique Contents

4. Make Use Of Appropriate Tags

Use hashtags with the most suitable word associated with your content. It is important you add more than 6 hashtags to your content so you can rank high on Instagram.

  • You need to add popular hashtags you find related to your content, your own developed hashtags from your content, and as well as hashtags for the audience you are targeting.
  • You need to be careful when adding popular hashtag because it can affect your ranking so only use very relevant ones.

5. Use a Locational Hashtag

Geographical hashtags are used when you are targeting audiences from a particular or specific place. Adding the location hashtags to your travel post on Instagram makes it more accessible to users interested in your specified location.

Use a Locational Hashtag

6. Always Respond To Your Followers In The Comment Section

One of the good ways to keep your Instagram account or page active is to engage with your followers apart from posting content. When anyone on Instagram comments on your post and it requires you to respond, then you need to respond timely.

7. Team Up With Other Users Related To Your Niche On Instagram

You can get a high number of followers and engagement by teaming up with other users on Instagram Pods. This is an engagement section or group on the platform that involves you on other users’ posts and they, in turn, do so for your post too:

  • Commenting.

8. Do Promotional Activities On Your Instagram Page

You can retain your previous audience and attract new ones when you do giveaways, or give discounts on your services or goods. One of the ways to make your Giveaway activity effective on the level of engagement on your Instagram page is to use contests along with any promotion you should.

9. Team Up With An Influencer On Instagram

Another way to rank as a Top post is to engage influencers and celebrities on your post by asking them to help you post or share your content. You can also tag but you need their approval before you do.
