Mini river cruises.

Mini river cruises typically last for four or five nights, although three-night sailings are sometimes available too. Typically, a four-night river cruise will give you three full days in which to explore three different European ports of call, although on some itineraries you may visit more than one destination per day. A short river cruise is a great way to explore several destinations during a short break or weekend away.   If you’re new to river cruising, a mini river cruise can be the perfect way to dip your toe in the water, so to speak, and see if a river cruise holiday is for you, without the commitment of a longer holiday. It’s also a great way to spend a few hours exploring new cities to see which ones you would like to return to for city breaks or holidays in the future. Make sure to take advantage of our river cruise deals .

Mini Cruises In Europe

Be enchanted by the cities of Germany on a Germany river cruise as you drift along the Rhine; explore Vienna and Budapest during a trip down the Danube on a river cruise in Hungary , or indulge in rich cultural heritage while sailing the Moselle.

There is so much to explore along the waterways of Europe, a short flight or Eurostar journey away. Explore beautiful cities on city breaks and enjoy the beauty of Amsterdam and all it has to offer on an Amsterdam river cruise . On a mini cruise in Europe, you’ll see some of the most beautiful sights Europe has to offer.

Romantic Rhine (Southbound) 2024

First river cruise wont be our last! So relaxing with exquisite dining and accommodations on board. Definitely an older crowd, but you get to know almost everyone on board by the end of the tour and most are very pleasant and having as much fun as we did! So nice compared to big boat cruising; no pressure to see and do all the offerings. many included excursions were nice, with easy low effort walking offered. Transfers were perfect.

Low water and motor coach use for part of the trip were the only issues. Avalon did a great job of working around the issues and has offered generous compensation for the inconvenience. I’ll use Avalon again.

Classic Rhine cruise (Basel-Amsterdam) MS Crucevita

The cruise was beautiful and very scenic especially the loreley strip. The restaurant staff were extremely friendly and warm. Special mention of Ida, Kenan and Sugana . The rest of the crew were very accommodating too. The tour leader Jessica and Jordi was super and helpful although we were the only few English speakers she made us feel included. On the whole it was a very beautiful experience although the rooms are a bit old design and the boat is not a very new but the staff were phenomenal .

4 Rivers: The Moselle, Sarre, Romantic Rhine, and Neckar Valleys (port-to-port cruise)

The ship itself was great, rooms and bathroom were a good size for a smaller ship. The food and dining room staff were excellent. Entertainment and on board communication was poor only in French. Need to do a better job it ensure that customers that don’t speak French are informed on whats going on and are seated together in the dining room! The excursions that were provided were good but some were only with a French speaking guide. Overall we had great time on this Cruise!

Very nice trip. Your were OK with a few standouts like the vinegar tasting. Wish there had been more lectures and cultures talks. The one about modern German attitudes was particularly fascinating.

Reviews of rhine cruises.

It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.
The Wi-Fi didn’t work as expected and it caused quite an inconvenience. The excursion plan is not as clear either. Overall it’s still a good tour but I think my last Danube river with Avalon is better than this rhino river cruise.
Great company to cruise with. Ship carries 110 passengers. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner each day. Plenty of stops to sightsee. The castles along the Rhine make trip a very enjoyable cruise. All staff were great.

Holidays Traditions Around the Globe

When to visit europe: seasons & temperatures, cruising europe christmas markets, best time to visit germany, best germany cruise river ports, german christmas markets traveler reviews, european river cruise - christmas markets in germany, german river cruising faqs.

  • Why should I choose a river cruise? A river cruise is a great comprehensive way to visit various countries in Europe. Unlike land tours where you might have to travel by train or bus during the day, cruises take advantage of the evenings and nights to do the major traveling and allow you to use your days to visit the destinations and sites. Plus, once you're onboard, the cruises are mostly all-inclusive. If you want to add on a helicopter tour or some kind of extension, then that might cost you more money, but the meals, lodging, trasnportation, and most tours on the itinerary are included in the price, making it not only an excellent value but also much easier to plan. Plus, unlike land tours of Europe, you don't have to pack and unpack every day when you move to a new city - your room simply glides along the river with you.
  • What should I look for on a riverboat? Unlike mega-yachts, bigger cruise ships, or expedition vessels, river boats are comparatively simple. They feature comfortable rooms, but they are not particularly spacious. You won't likely find gyms (maybe an exercise room), large pools (if any), or various dining options, but you will find that the vessels are well appointed and have friendly crews and guides that are enthusiastic to make your experience memorable.
  • Are there 5-star river vessels in Europe? Since river cruising is a relatively new trend in European travel, the best river vessels could best be described as 4-stars due to their size and lack of amenities. However, there are a number of vessels that we feature that could very aptly be called luxurious based on their accommodations, social areas, and gourmet cuisine. We expect that in the coming years, competition among the vessels will drive the quality up and more 5-star vessels will soon be on the European waterways.
  • Should I get a room with a balcony? Contrary to popular belief, balconies are not actually that important for European river cruises. All vessels feature a panoramic sun deck where you can take in the beautiful views, but as far as the rooms go, balconies might actually take away from the square footage of your cabin. Length requirements of river vessels mean that cabins tend to be smaller than on the sea-going ships, and balconies can often cut into the room itself. If you want a room that gives you exclusive access to the open air, then consider looking for rooms with sliding glass doors and wall-to-wall windows. These are a good alternative to balconies and save considerable space in your cabin.
  • What is dining like? There will likely be one main dining room that serves meals on a certain schedule that coincides with your itinerary. Food is prepared by skilled local chefs and will nourish you as you explore and discover German culture and history.
  • Do river cruises ever visit destinations that aren't on the river? Absolutely! So many of Germany's destinations are not actually on the Rhine, Main, or Danube Rivers. In order to access these sites, you will dock at one of the port cities along the river and enjoy a luxurious coach ride towards the destination, during which time you can see even more of the lush countryside.
  • Will my vessel have WiFi? Don't count on having WiFi throughout the entire cruise. While visiting cities, it's likely that you will find hotspots, and certain vessels are able to offer frequent access. However, there might be times when you are out of range of the signal and you might be without internet for up to several days at a time.
  • What kind of power outlets are there? Will I need a converter? European electric is 220 volts, compared to the 110 volts in North America. Most devices are equipped to deal with both voltages. However, you will need a plug adapter if you have the standard 2-prong American plugs - depending on where your boat is from in Europe, it will have either the British plugs (three flat prongs) or the continental European outlets (2 round prongs). A couple simple adapters are all you need, but we suggest wrapping duct tape around the adapter and the plug to make sure you don't forget them when you disconnect the device.
  • How can I save money on a river cruise? We offer many great deals for river cruises through Germany. These are the best options for saving up to thousands of dollars on your river expedition. Avoid saving money by choosing less expensive cabins. The difference of a couple hundred dollars can actually negatively impact your experience if you decide on a cabin that is smaller or does not have large windows that open, for example.
  • Are river cruises in Germany a good family vacation? Definitely! Whether you are exploring the country's traditional Christmas Markets in December or learning about its contemporary and ancient history, the sights and flavors of Germany make for a fantastic family destination. Younger kids will delight in the fairytale castles, while teens and parents can appreciate the impressive architecture of the centuries-old buildings. It's a great way to immerse your family in the Old World culture, history, and folklore.
  • Do Americans and Canadians need a passport and visa to travel to Germany? All citizens of North America traveling to Europe need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months. In recent years, it has not been necessary to apply for a visa before traveling to Europe if you plan to stay less than three months, however, this situation may change in the future. See current European visa requirements .

Rhine River Cruises

River cruises in Northern Europe are centred on Germany and Holland, and include River Rhine cruises, River Moselle cruises, and cruises on the rivers and canals of Holland and Belgium in Spring tulip time.

The River Rhine is one of the main rivers of Europe, flowing from Switzerland to the North Sea at Amsterdam. The navigable section starts from Basel in Switzerland, continuing to Strasbourg in France's Alsace region before reaching the wine village of Rudesheim . The Middle Rhine is the most scenic section as the river cruise passes through the Rhine Gorge dotted with castles high above the river, and the famous Lorelei rock. Cologne with its huge twin spire cathedral and old town is a Rhine river cruise highlight.

The River Moselle leaves the Rhine at Koblenz , and twists past vineyard covered hillsides as far as Luxembourg . The river side port of Cochem , overlooked by magnificent Reichsburg Castle, the ancient wine village of Bernkastel , and Trier with its extensive Roman sites are Moselle river cruise highlights.

From Amsterdam take springtime Holland river cruises to the Ijsselmeer and historic ports of Volendam , Hoorn and Enkhuisen , with excursions to Keukenhof Gardens ablaze with tulips and spring flowers. Cruises may visit medieval Bruges or the diamond city of Antwerp in Belgium.

The cruise terminal in Amsterdam is a short distance from the city centre and its tall merchant houses and tree-lined canals. Chief sights are the prestigious Rijksmuseum and its large collection of important paintings, the Van Gogh Museum and Ann Frank's House. The attractive narrow streets are full of bars, coffee houses, quaint bridges and interesting shops.

Basel (Switzerland)

Basle is a handsome city with a buzzing Marketplatz and daily food markets. In its old town are winding streets, the cathedral, red-brick City Hall, art museums and many historic buildings. The green valleys and chocolate-box villages of Switzerland are sometimes included in tours from Basle.

Bernkastel (Germany)

Set beside the river in a landscape of steeply-sloping vineyards and rolling hills, Bernkastel is a lovely little town. Its red and white timber-frame houses surround the medieval square, and worth seeking out is the quaint Spitzhausen the pointed house. Bernkastel has a 500-year history of wine-making the famous Mosel riesling wines.

Cochem (Germany)

The waterfront at Cochem is lined with a flower-filled promenade, leading via twisting alleys to its medieval square. Known as the Pearl of the Moselle, the architectural gem of Cochem is surrounded by vineyards producing Reisling, which can be tasted in its cosy wine taverns. There is often the opportunity to visit the gorgeous hill-top castle of Reichsburg overlooking the town.

Cologne (Germany)

Cologne is the capital of the Rhineland and is dominated by the huge spires of its cathedral. The Old Town has welcoming taverns, cafés and plenty of opportunities to buy a bottle of the famous 4711 cologne. Stroll the narrow streets of Old Town and see quaint squares and perhaps visit the Germano-Roman Museum to see finds from Colognes Roman past.

Koblenz (Germany)

Koblenz sits prettily on the riverside where the Moselle and the Rhine meet. Tiny alleys, fountains and old squares lead to the 12th-century church of St Florin. In this rich wine-producing region, a visit to a wine tavern is a must, where you can sample 'Father Rhine' and 'Mother Moselle' at their best.

Mainz (Germany)

Leafy Mainz offers two fascinating highlights. Mainz was the birthplace of Johann Gutenberg, and the city's Printing Museum exhibits the first two copies made of his famous Bible. In St Stephans' church there are wonderful, vivid blue stained-glass windows created by the great 20th century artist, Marc Chagall.

Rudesheim (Germany)

The scenic town of Rudesheim has many attractions - it sits at the foot of the Niederwald mountain and in one of the Rhines best wine-making regions. Stroll the gorgeous Drosselgasse and sip a glass of superb Riesling in a cosy tavern or take a tour by gondola up the Niederwald,. Other options include Castle Vollards or a miniature train ride to the eccentric Mechanical Music Museum.

Strasbourg (France)

The Grand Ile is the historic centre of Strasbourg, the busy European capital which combines dazzling historic buildings with the offices of the European Parliament and modern commerce. Stroll the fairytale district of Petite France, see covered bridges and the magnificent cathedral.

Trier (Germany)

Explore Trier on foot and discover magnificent Roman remains in amongst fine restaurants, wine-growers taverns and colourful gabled buildings. The main sites are Porta Nigra city gate, the basilica, imperial baths and the ancient cathedral. This distinguished and picturesque city beside the Moselle River was the birthplace of Karl Marx.

Antwerp port is adjacent to the Steen and connected by metro to the city, which is an important centre of the diamond trade. Cobbled lanes criss-cross the city leading to art galleries, antique and chocolate shops, and the magnificent cathedral of Notre Dame, which holds paintings by Rubens, the tall Flemish buildings of the Grote Markt and the City Hall. Antwerp is also a fashion capital, and the forthcoming Port Authority HQ was designed by groundbreaking architect, Zaha Hadid.

Bruges (Belgium)

Bruges is one of the oldest towns in Flanders, and one of the prettiest. Tranquil canals wind through the city, and the Church of Our Lady houses the sculpture by Michelangelo of the Madonna and Child. In the busy square overlooked by the Town Hall belfry perhaps try local 'moules et frites', buy fine chocolate, take coffee or sample one of the many Belgian beers.

Enkhuizen (Holland)

The Drommedaris Tower in Enkhuizen is a reminder of the towns role as a trading centre for the Dutch East India Company, and the Zuiderzee Museum traces its history. The traditional wooden boats of the brown fleet pass through Enkhuizens busy lock and can be seen sailing on the Ijselmeer.

Ghent (Belgium)

Charming Ghent escaped World War II bombing, and has over 900 listed buildings commissioned by wealthy merchants in medieval times. Along the canals, there are many small shops selling unusual items, and the Design Museum shows Art Nouveau items and Philippe Starck designs.

Hoorn (Holland)

The delightful small town of Hoorn has lovely gabled buildings, constructed during its time as a trading port for the Dutch East India Company. It is well-known for its quaint shops, selling curiosities, antiques and art, and for its famous son who rounded the Southern Cape in 1618 and named it Cape Horn after his birthplace.

The quaint lakeside town of Volendam is a maze of fishermen's houses, small gabled buildings and wooden shops, and was a popular subject for 19th-century artists. Some of its inhabitants still wear traditional Dutch dress, and there is a museum dedicated to Dutch costume and its history. Volendam is close to the historic cheese-producing town of Edam.

ARRIVAL IN COLOGNE

Arrive at your five-star cruise ship moored on the banks of the Rhine in historic Cologne, one of Germany’s oldest cities. Your professional, English-speaking crew will welcome you on board, show you to your cabin and help you familiarise yourself with all aspects of this first-class floating boutique hotel before dinner is served.

Route map

After breakfast, disembark for a guided walking tour of this most majestic of cities, Cologne. The cathedral’s famous spires tower above the old town’s maze of cobbled streets, where our expert guide will bring the city’s fascinating history to life. Visit the cathedral, the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe, miraculous survivor of Second World War bombing and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It took six centuries to complete this iconic masterpiece and among its many treasures are the magnificent stained-glass windows and gilded sarcophagus said to contain the remains of the three kings from the Nativity story. Explore the vibrant old town, beautifully restored and boasting an abundance of excellent shopping and cosy bars, some of which still brew their own beer.

After some free time, return to the ship to enjoy lunch and relax on board as our journey truly begins. As we leave Cologne’s imposing skyline behind head up onto the sun deck to enjoy fabulous river views during an afternoon of scenic sailing. Sink into a good book in a comfortable lounge chair, cool off in the splash pool or relax on the terrace area with a refreshing drink. Freshen up in your elegant cabin before reconvening with your fellow cruisers in the bar for an aperitif. During tonight’s dinner we arrive in Andernach.

Cityscape of Cologne with Hohenzollern bridge, cathedral and Saint Martin church, Germany

ANDERNACH & BOPPARD

One of the oldest towns in Germany, Andernach, was founded by the Romans in 12BC on the site of an old Celtic settlement then seized by the Franks in 450 AD who set up a royal court within its old fort walls. By medieval times, the town had grown in stature and was trading with places as far away as England and Scandinavia – even having its own mint and coinage. Andernach and the surrounding area is well known for its pumice with production booming since the 1950s. Enjoy a guided walking tour around its picturesque streets and admire the town’s mighty defensive walls, gates and towers, the finest of which is the 56-metre tall Round Tower. See the impressive, ruined castle with its well-preserved keep, and the majestic cathedral with its four soaring towers, fine interior and unusual wall decorations. At the old harbour area discover the Old Crane, a 16th-century stone-turning tower crane, still in use until 1911 to load millstones, tuff and wine.

Back on board for lunch, take in the glorious river scenery as we set sail for Boppard. Later, discover this hidden gem, set against a backdrop of rolling forested slopes and vineyards. Nicknamed ‘Town of the Roses’ it’s a joy to amble through its picture-perfect streets soaking up the ambience of yesteryear. If you’re feeling energetic Marksburg Castle set on a hill overlooking the town makes for an interesting visit. Dating from the 13th century, as one of the only castles on the Rhine to fully escape war damage it well-deserves its UNESCO status. Learn about life here through the ages as you wander through the impressive Gothic Hall, armoury and kitchen. Take in the expansive views stretching for miles over the river and valley below – you can see exactly why the castle was so well sited to view oncoming enemies.

Our ship remains moored overnight so after dinner there’s the chance to hop ashore once more for a nightcap in one of the cosy tucked away wine cellars.

Historic buildings in the old town of Andernach

RHINE GORGE & RÜDESHEIM

There’s a bucket-list treat in store this morning as we cruise through the world-famous Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and area of outstanding natural beauty. As the river twists and turns, encased by sheer valley sides 600 feet high, make sure you’re up on deck to experience these incredible views close up. Ruins of ancient castles teeter on the valley slopes, built by wealthy princes eager to display their power and influence and to extort tolls from passing river traffic. Legends abound here, most famously of the Lorelei - murmuring rock – where enchanting maidens lured unsuspecting sailors to watery graves. Look out for birds of prey floating above as we cruise on passing quaint villages – Saint Goar, Bacharach and Kaub – all famed for their wine production.

Later, arrive in Rüdesheim for a guided walking tour. A tangle of crooked houses, winding cobbled alleys and curious little shops, this pretty town is famous for its wine making. Set amongst vineyard-clad slopes, Riesling is the region’s speciality grape, and you’ll find a wealth of Weinstuben where you can sample the locally produced wines. A delightful marketplace lined with pastel facades and cosy taverns lies at Rüdesheim’s heart, overlooked by Brömserburg Castle. As you wander the maze of streets, don’t miss the impressive Klunkhardshof, one of the town’s finest 15th-century homes with its traditional timber frame and gabled roof.

After dinner back on board, reconvene in the bar for a digestif or perhaps a coffee with a shot of locally produced Asbach brandy. We remain moored in Rüdesheim overnight.

Castle Reichenstein in the Middle Rhine Valley, Germany

During breakfast arrive in the historic city of Mainz, a colourful ensemble of domes and spires rising above the riverbank. Situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Main Rivers, it’s famed as Germany’s wine capital and the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the movable type printing press. The excellent city museum houses a reconstruction of his workshop and two copies of original Gutenberg Bibles dating from 1455. Dominating Mainz’s skyline is the Martinsdom Cathedral, with its fine Romanesque architecture and another must-see is the spectacular stained-glass windows in Saint Stephen’s Church. On our guided walking tour explore the cobbled streets of the old town, stopping to admire the elegant patrician houses and charming timber-framed buildings.

Lunch is served on board as we continue our scenic cruise so it’s the perfect opportunity to relax and make the most of the ship’s excellent facilities. Indulge in a treatment in the spa or at the hairdressers, or simply find a comfy seat in the lounge with an afternoon cup of tea and enjoy the views. This is the very heart of Germany’s winelands, a dreamy landscape of lush woodland and fertile vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see.

Enjoy dinner on board as we continue sailing overnight to Miltenberg.

St Stephen's church in Mainz, Germany

MILTENBERG & WERTHEIM

This morning we arrive in Miltenberg, a beautifully preserved medieval village with a labyrinth of winding alleys and lanes to explore. With our local guide, discover the impressive gatehouse, standing as a proud guardian of the village and the charming marketplace, lined by traditional fachwerk buildings, with their characterful timber frames. Legend has it that the locals were allowed free wood from the surrounding forests, hence the abundance of this architectural style. Admire the square’s trickling fountain, ornately carved from stone and complete with dancing cherubs, and the intricately detailed Gasthaus Zum Riesen, claiming to be Germany’s oldest tavern.

Later as we drift away, we’ll pass under Miltenberg’s red-brick bridge as our Captain skillfully navigates the gentle meandering bends of the Main. This afternoon we’ll arrive in Wertheim, a delightful surprise, off the tourist trail and all the better for its unspoilt ambience. Passing the fishing boats at anchor, admire the little houses opposite, painted in cheery pastel tones. A russet-walled 12th century castle overlooks the old town, surveying the church spires, turrets and patchwork of multicoloured buildings below. Enjoy a late afternoon walking tour, discovering the town’s secrets through the eyes of an expert guide. Look out for the Zobelhaus, a contender for the narrowest house in Germany!

This evening enjoy another delectable dinner as we set sail towards Würzburg.

Colourful half-timbered houses in Miltenberg, historical medieval Old Town, Bavaria, Germany

Enjoy a relaxed morning of scenic sailing – one of the real treats of a river cruising holiday. Early afternoon we arrive in the refined Bavarian city of Würzburg, sitting resplendent on the banks of the Main. A fascinating contrast to the quintessential villages we’ve encountered, after lunch disembark for a guided tour. Founded in the 10th century as the centre of the kingdom known as Franconia, the Marienberg Fortress overlooks neat rows of grand, pastel-coloured buildings punctuated by the spires and domes of the city’s many churches. The jewel in Würzburg’s illustrious crown is the Residenz, a magnificent Baroque palace that whisks you back to a more romantic age. Originally conceived to rival the Palace of Versailles in scale, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and features one of Germany’s most ornate staircases and dozens of interconnecting rooms adorned with frescoes, priceless tapestries, sculptures and paintings. We moor in Würzburg overnight so there’s plenty of time to explore under your own steam too.

The view of Würzburg and the fortress

ROTHENBURG & OCHSENFURT

This morning, experience something a bit different as we take a drive along the Romantic Road – aptly named to describe this route through some of the most spellbinding scenery in the world. Our journey takes us through a folkloric landscape, threaded by a procession of medieval towns, lofty castles and grand palaces. As you soak up the cinematic views, we’ll arrive at the glorious town of Rothenburg, crowning a hill with sensational views over the meandering river below. The quaint old town is cradled within immaculately preserved walls and there’ll be time to explore its pretty, cobbled lanes, lined with tall gables and pointy roofs. Our ship awaits a short drive away in Ochsenfurt and after lunch, spend the afternoon enjoying a guided tour. Wander through the old town, pausing to admire the town hall’s impressive mechanical clock and 13th-century church with its vibrant interior. You’ll be transported back in time as you stroll amongst the romantic, timber-framed houses and ancient ramparts. We return to the ship for dinner where another superb menu awaits and set sail towards Bamberg.

Historic town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria, Germany

Enjoy a morning of scenic sailing, taking a spot in the lounge or up on deck as a kaleidoscope of glorious vistas slip past.

This afternoon we moor in Bamberg, undoubtedly one of Europe’s prettiest small towns and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Planned by Emperor Heinrich II in the 11th century as a Franconian capital, it sits on seven lush green hills, reminiscent of Rome – a city whose grandeur it endeavoured to equal. Discover its history and architectural highlights on our informative tour led by a local guide, taking in the exquisite old town and exceptional multi-spired cathedral. Perhaps the most intriguing landmark is Bamberg’s town hall, which sits on an island in the middle of the burbling river, flanked by bridges on either side. From here you can also see ‘Little Venice’ – a picturesque cluster of fishermen’s houses built along the waterfront, mostly dating from the Middle Ages.

This evening promises another highlight, with a magnificent dinner hosted by the Captain, followed by a performance of traditional Bavarian music on board. Leaving Bamberg, we join the Main-Danube canal as we cruise to our final stop, historic Nuremberg.

Old town hall above the river Regnitz in the historic old town of Bamberg

Enjoy a relaxing final morning of cruising as we glide towards the Bavarian city of Nuremberg. Intriguing for its association with the Second World War, as the site of many pre-war Nazi rallies and later, the war crimes trials. What is less known however is that this historic city captivates visitors by its cobbled streets with classic half-timbered houses, an enchanting castle – rebuilt after the war – plus a plethora of historic landmarks. These include the Church of Saint Lawrence, a stunning example of Gothic architecture, and the intricate Church of Our Lady with its working mechanical clock dating from 1506. It overlooks the bustling Hauptmarkt, an elegant square renowned for its intricate fountain resembling a Gothic church tower. Discover all these and more on our insightful city tour before there’s some time to explore at your own pace. Amid all this splendour, spare a moment to taste some of Nuremberg’s prized gingerbread or take some home as a delicious souvenir.

After a fascinating day, return to the ship for our last dinner, a splendid finale to this memorable holiday.

This morning there’s a little more time to explore Boppard, a true hidden gem, set against a backdrop of rolling forested slopes and vineyards. Nicknamed ‘Town of the Roses’ it’s a joy to amble through its picture-perfect streets soaking up the ambience of yesteryear. If you’re feeling energetic take a bracing walk to the 13th-century Marksburg Castle set on a hill overlooking the town, for stunning views stretching for miles over the river and valley below – you can see exactly why the castle was so well sited to view oncoming enemies!

Late morning we set sail once more and during lunch arrive in Andernach. One of the oldest towns in Germany and founded by the Romans in 12BC on the site of an old Celtic settlement, Andernach was then seized by the Franks in 450 AD who set up a royal court within its old fort walls.

Tonight enjoy a superb dinner featuring local specialties, hosted by the Captain. Our ship moors in Andernach overnight so after dinner there’s the chance to hop ashore once more for a nightcap in one of the cosy tucked away wine cellars.

Roman Catholic parish church of the Assumption, Andernach, Germany

Savour a relaxing last morning of cruising as we glide on towards our final destination, Cologne, passing under the Bridge of Remagen. After lunch, enjoy a guided walking tour of this most majestic of cities.

After some free time, return to the ship for dinner, a splendid finale to this memorable holiday.
