Brief Travel Plan For Shrikhand Mahadev Trek

Beginning in Jaun, a village in the Kullu district that stands at 6,397 feet, the trek to Holy Shrikhand Mahadev commences. This small settlement is situated along the right bank of Kurpan River, which springs from the base of the Shrikhand Mountain Range. Kurpan is a swift-flowing stream with sparkling water, and in the monsoon it appears to be a wild and dangerous river.

Located in the Himalayan range , Jaun is a small village of about 50 houses and a temple dedicated to Mata Katyayni. The area is approachable from Baagi Pul via a Kuccha road of 8 Kms. The village is surrounded by the picturesque views of mountains, streams, homes and temples, as well as the luscious apple orchards. On a clear day, visitors can also get a glimpse of the holy Shrikhand peak from Jaun. Additionally, it’s the last place to buy some basic necessities for the trek.

You will find the locals of Jaun smiling innocently, welcoming visitors with open arms. Inhabitants of this region are known for their hospitality. To get to know more about the surrounding area, spend time with the locals and learn about the Shrikhand Yatra and how it has become a source of income for the people here.

Heading to Singhgad from Jaon is an undertaking that many take on. The journey often involves making a trek through the hills and valleys of the region. It can be an exciting adventure that many find enjoyable and worthwhile.

Visitors can also visit the temples located here. The area is characterized by its verdant forests and Deodar trees. This is what makes the area renowned for its thick woodlands.

A view of Kurpan along the journey to Barathi Nala -Day 1

From Singhgad to Thachru – that’s the route one would take.

The next stage of the journey leads to Barathi Nalah, a peak standing at 7,283 ft. This trek of 3 km can be completed within 1.5 hours, and the views along the way are stunning. Part of it involves crossing a wooden bridge made of a Deodar tree, providing an exciting and thrilling experience that brings the adventurers close to nature.

At Barathi Nalah you can take a break before the 6 Km vertical climb of Danda Dhaar up to Thachru. This trek can take up to 6-8 hours and demands a great deal of stamina. You can make rest stops along the route, which passes through the dark deodar forests, where it is impossible to discern anything due to the thickness of the trees. You can however make out the sound of rivers, streams and waterfalls quite clearly. As there is no access to water on the way to Thachru, it is essential to carry enough water to last the journey.

Heading to Taacharu

When you are hiking up the hillside, you can observe the varying vegetation and from numerous vistas, the Kullu Himalayas can be viewed. Along the journey, one can come across some large Deodar trees which are many years old. Spectacular birds can be seen on the way to Thachru. Additionally, there are some rocky areas where one can appreciate the scenery of the thick woods and small streams near Danda Dhaar and its surrounding areas.

At an altitude of 11,318 ft, Thachru is the endpoint of the tree line. Herbs and shrubs are the only vegetation in this area. In the evening, the views of the Sarahan and Kotgarh region to the South, Shrikhand peak to the East, and Kullu Himalaya to the West are breathtaking. It is also the ideal spot to spend the night after a 6-8 km climb, as the trek from there to Parvati Baag is gentle and less demanding.

The sacred Thachru, the sacred Kaali Ghat, and the holy Kunsha

A 3 km straight climb from Taacharu to Kaali Ghat takes around 1.5 hours. On the trek, one can come across some of the rare Himalayan flowers. The path is north-facing and has a deep ditch on one side. After an hour of trekking, an open space full of big rocks appears. This area offers a clear view of the surrounding mountains and one can reach Kaali Ghat in the next 15 minutes. It is situated at 12,778 ft and is the top of Danda Dhaar. The vertical ascent that started at Barathi Nala culminates at Kaali Ghat; giving a 360-degree panoramic view of the Himalayas.

The picture illustrated below offers a view of the mountain ranges from Kali Ghati.

A view of the ranges from Kali Ghati

At Kaal Ghati , there is a temple devoted to the Goddess Kali that marks the beginning of the next journey. This trek is a gentle one and will take only half an hour to complete the 1.5 km distance to Bhim Talai. This spot is said to be where one of the Pandava brothers, Bhim, once took his bath. It is situated 11,279 ft. above sea level and is encompassed by tall mountains, grasslands, and little cascades. Shepherds can also be found in this area.

The trek from Bhim Talai to Kunsha, which is a distance of three kilometres, can be completed in 1.5 hours. After traversing a large grassland, the path passes through a glacier that is 500 metres in length and 80 metres in width. Following this, there is a vertical climb through rocky terrain to Kunsha, which stands at 12,746 feet. This spot is surrounded by large waterfalls and stunning natural beauty. Here, one can spend many hours admiring the gorgeous waterfalls, clouds and flowers. It is an ideal place to relax and be re-energized by the surrounding nature.

Beginning at Kunsha and extending to Bheem Dwar, there is a flat track with some slight hills. This 3 kilometer stretch takes an estimated two hours to traverse. The trail is dotted with rare Himalayan blooms and numerous shrubs. This location is similar to the Valley of Flowers in Uttrakhand, with a plethora of unique flowers easily visible. The area is expansive, affording a stunning view of valleys, ravines, towering waterfalls, and many small rivulets. Kunsha valley enchants with its captivating sights, from the clouds, mountains, and snow patches to the pleasant sound of cascading streams. It is a picturesque dreamscape.

After your two-hour journey in the meadow of nature, you come across Bheem Dwar, which is situated at an altitude of 12175 feet. As per the stories, it is believed that during the Pandavas’ exile, they stayed here. Nowadays, this place is referred to as Bheem Dwar and it is a large Bugyal encompassed by a multitude of waterways and glaciers. While en route to Parvati Baag, you have to traverse the largest waterfall of the trek.

The Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra, held each July, has its starting point at Bheem Dwar. Shepherds often take their sheep and goats to graze in the area. There are caves here that provide shelter to pilgrims who need to rest. The stunning beauty of the area has a captivating effect, easily drawing people in and making them want to linger and take in the natural wonders.

This picture shows the peaks that can be seen from Bheem Dwar.

Located at 13,622 ft, Parvati Baag is just a 3 Km trek from Bheem Dwar and the journey to get there takes around 2 hours. The hike up until the large waterfall is mild, but after crossing it there is a steep 2.5 Km climb to Parvati Baag. It has gained its name due to the legends of Mata Parvati staying in this area. It is a stunning location, abundant with rare flowers from the Himalayas and is particularly renowned for the Brahma Kamal, a flower which can be easily found here. Parvati Baag is situated just beneath the Shrikhand Mountain, and it is said that at night it is possible to touch the sky with your hand.

A journey from Parvati Baag to Nain Sarovar and back can be made. This route can be traveled, with the end point being where it began.

At dawn you must set out heading to the Holy Shrikhand Peak. The last place to find vegetation, such as grass, shrubs and herbs is at Parvati Baag. Moving beyond this location, your path is only moraines and snow. Shrikhand Peak is a mere 6 Km away from Parvati Baag. As you journey to Shrikhand, you will pass through glaciers, streams and stone tunnels.

Heading to Shrikhand Mahadev?

The initial section of the journey to Nain Sarovar Lake is mostly composed of snow and rocks. This lake at 14,527 ft is encompassed by a region of about two football fields and it takes 1.5 hours to get to it. The complete trek to Shrikhand Mahadev is connected with Lord Shiva and Nain Sarovar Lake; it is said that it was formed by the tears of Maa Parvati when she was venerating Lord Shiva.

Maa Parvati is venerated at Nain Sarovar Lake, which is a place of worship. After taking some time to get used to the atmosphere, visitors should return to Parvati Baag.

The picture shows Nain Sarover alongside the paths that lead to Srikhand

Backtrack to Nain Sarovar. The climb to Shrikhand is very abrupt and steep from this spot. The initial section of this hike from Nain Sarovar is a glacier of 200 meters. It takes around 45 minutes just to finish this 0.5 kilometer section. It takes a lot of stamina to accomplish this part. Once 45 minutes are spent, you arrive at the peak of a cliff at 14,967 ft. From this point, you can clearly observe the magnificence of Nain Sarovar Lake. Towards Shrikhand, large rocks and glaciers can be seen. If you reach early in the morning, the beauty of Kinnaur Mountains can be viewed from here.

A glimpse of the intertwining mountain ridges can be seen from Shrikhand Mahadev, as presented in the image above. The photo showcases the connected ranges located at this location.

Once you progress further in the hike, you will see snow and moraines in most places. Seven peaks have to be conquered in order to reach the peak of Shrikhand. As the sun rises, you will feel as if you are above the clouds. While making your way to Bheem Bailee, you will cross several glaciers and tunnels made of stones. Bheem Bailee is a holy area dedicated to Bheem, located at an elevation of 15921 ft.

At this place, various marks have been found on stones. Legends speak of Bheem constructing a stairway to Heaven, which was not completed due to the lack of time. By looking at the stones piled on top of each other, one can imagine the stairway. From Bheem Baiee, the holy Shrikhand Shila can be seen. It requires a half hour to reach Shrikhand and one has to go across a vast glacier in order to get there.

At an altitude of 17,150 ft, Shrikhand provides a spectacular view of the Himalayan Mountains from three directions and a captivating sight of Rampur Sarahan and the Shimla hills from the fourth side. Everywhere you go, you can bask in the aroma of nature.

From the summit of Shrikhand Mahadev, an impressive vista can be seen.

From this spot, one can have a view of the Kinnaur Himalaya to one side and the Kullu and Shimla mountains to the other. It is a place where all devotees believe that Lord Shiva is omnipresent.

Situated in the Kinnaur region of Himachal Pradesh, the Shrikhand Mahadev trek becomes a site for pilgrimage in the month of July. Pilgrims from all around the country flock to this holy site to witness the miraculous 75 feet tall Shivalinga situated on the summit of the holy peak. The name Shrikhand Mahadev owes its name to Lord Shiva and it towers at 5250 meters above sea level. To reach the base camp at Jaun, one has to start from Shimla and make their way through Narkanda and Rampur Bushahr and enter Kinnaur valley which is known for its Apples and it is also considered that the best apples in the world come from this region. The long drive to Jaun is long and tiring but as we start with our trek you are immediately transported into the heavenly abode of Lord Shiva surrounded by mystical mountains of the Himalayas. The view from top of the summit is simply breathtaking as you can view different regions of Himachal Pradesh from that altitude. You can spot Kullu valley, Jorkanden and the Rangrik ranges of Kinnaur with the view of Sutlej river flowing. Shrikhand Mahadev can be defined as one of the toughest and challenging treks the Himalayas has to offer so it is recommended that only experienced trekkers who have been to at least one trek above 15,000 feet above sea level. Prior preparation is also advised for this trek.

➽ Itinerary of Cycling Expedition

You will be asked to meet at your designated pick up spot at Shimla from where you will board your vehicles. We will make our way through Shimla and then enter into the scenic hill view outside the hustle and bustle of the city. We will make our way through some famous towns like Narkanda which is a popular holiday destination and then reach Rampur Bushahr which is an important city in the region for trade. From there we will enter Kinnaur valley. You can see the change in culture from a completely Hindu dominated society in Shimla and change into a mix of Hindu and Buddhist culture as we enter Kinnaur. This is prominent in Kinnaur region as it is very close to Tibet. Our long journey by road will take around 9 hours so we will reach Jaun at around 4 pm or 5 pm in the evening. Overnight stay at Homestay in Jaun.

We will wake up early in the morning and begin our trek after having some hot and nutritious breakfast at our Homestay. From the very beginning of the trail the trek is a steep ascent, this can be taken as a training from Day 1 itself to prepare you better for the summit push later on during the trek. As we trek towards Thati Weel we will come across Kurpan river, we will take this river as our guide and follow it upstream to reach Bharati Nala. The flora surrounding our trail is full of coniferous trees consisting of Deodar and Pine. From Bharati Nala we will continue our upward climb towards Thati Weel and it will take us another 4-5 hours from Bharati Nala to reach Thati Weel through the dense alpine forest. We will reach the campsite late in the afternoon where we will be welcomed with some hot tea and snacks. Take evening time with leisure and take a stroll around the magnificent landscape. Overnight stay in tents at Thati Weel.

Today, we have an early breakfast and depart for our next campsite at Kunsha. We will be gradually gaining altitude. It will take around one hour to reach Thachdu, till Thachdu you are still the tree line and the flora is coniferous. After Thachdu you leave the treeline behind and move towards Kalighati named after the Hindu Goddess Kali who is the wife of Lord Shiva. The locals of the region consider this place to be a place of power. After Kalighati our descent begins towards our campsite at Kunsha. We will reach Kunsha in the afternoon. Rest in the evening. Overnight stay in tents at Kunsha Campsite.

We will begin with our ascent early in the morning. The view of the sunrise in the mountains hits an individual on a different tangent with its mesmerizing beauty. The day is going to be tough as we would be gaining altitude and the trail is nothing but a steep uphill climb. After a couple of hours into the journey we will see Bhimshila or Bhim Dwar which the locals believe that it was carved out by none other than Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers from the epic Mahabharat. Take some rest at Bhim Dwar and take in the rich scenic beauty of the area. After taking some rest we will continue on our steep journey and climb towards Parvati Bagh. An interesting thing that we are going to encounter today is the Brahma Kamal. On reaching Parvati Bagh we will see our campsite being set up. Take as much rest as possible as the next day is going to be the most challenging day of them all and will have to start even before the sun rises. Overnight stay in tents at Parvati Bagh campsite.

The day of reckoning has finally arrived and we will be making our push to the summit. We will wake up at 1 am at night and start getting ready for our summit attempt in a few hours. At 2 am we will serve a quick meal which will give us energy to climb till the Shivalinga at the summit of Shrikhand Mahadev. We will depart from our campsite at 3 am sharp and not waste any time as we would be trekking for at least 12 hours today to reach the summit and then come back down to Parvati Bagh. Our trail today is steep but much steeper than the previous days of the trek so far. On top of that we will have to cross some tricky boulder sections which need some careful navigation to cross. We will also pass through a field of Brahma Kamal. On reaching the summit you will be completely mesmerized by the view that the mountains project. We bow our heads in respect in front of the 75 feet Shivalinga on top of the mountain and take in the vivid beauty of the mountain ranges that surround the regions. After taking some pictures of the successful summit we will begin our climb down to Parvati Bagh. We have always thought that climbing up is the hardest part but you will soon realize that climbing down is equally taxing if not more. After our tiresome journey to the summit and back to the base camp we will rejoice and celebrate with our success. Overnight stay in tents at Parvati Bagh campsite.

After our tiring endeavor the previous day we will wake up rested and fulfilled with our accomplishment. We will have our breakfast depart on the route that we took to reach Parvati Bagh and now this time we will be going downhill. We will pass the magnificent Bhim Dwar on our way down. The rest of the route is also the same till we reach Thati Weel. Overnight stay in tents at Thati Weel.

We will take the same route back to Jaun after having breakfast. We will follow the same route beside Kurpan River and reach the village of Jaun. Overnight stay at Homestay in Jaun.

After having breakfast we say goodbye to the Himalayan Adventure Trips team and hope to see you again in the mountains.

➽ Preparation for Cycling Expedition

You must be well prepared mentally, physically, and spiritually for the magnificent Himalayan expedition, as you know any high expedition requires careful preparation. So, here are a few things to keep in mind as you get ready for your cycling expedition:

⦿ Physically –

The physical demands of a bicycle tour need a month of training prior to embarking on any given riding excursion. Strengthen your legs to the proper level by regularly cycling 70-100 km and working out to increase your endurance. Mountain routes are steep and frequently followed by downhills since riding on plains is quite different from riding in the mountains. If you're used to biking in the mountains, 100 kilometres on the plains will seem like a breeze. Therefore, if you smoke, you should give it up and undertake breathing exercises twice a day to strengthen your lungs and help you acclimatise to the circumstances while remaining resilient on the journey. Get out and play, try some Yoga, or do anything else that gets your heart pumping.

⦿ Mentally –

As essential as physical training is for a cycling journey, so too is mental preparation. Enjoy your regular activities, maintain a healthy diet and sleep schedule, and unwind before embarking on a cycling adventure. Put your mind at ease by avoiding making any rash assumptions about the vacation. Meet together with your closest friends before setting off on your bike excursion to gain inspiration and de-stress before the journey. Your pre-trip preconceptions will prove to be unfounded once you join the group and discover the other cyclists. As the journey progresses, so will the traveler's mental readiness. There will also be mental repercussions from the physical difficulties. So, when you bike, pay attention to different areas of your body and purposefully relax them. One of the best ways to keep one's mind in good shape is to just take it easy and enjoy the journey.

⦿ Technically-

Get the right size cycling shoes and you'll be ready to ride for hours. You should equip yourself with a high-quality protective headgear, riding gloves, a watch (if you have one), elbow and knee pads, a puncture repair kit, LED lights, lubrication of any sort, a hydration bag, and spare brake and gear cables.

➽ Things to Carry

  • Shoes: You may either ride in regular sneakers or invest in a pair of cycling-specific shoes. Flip-flops, worn at the campground, are as practical as a pair of sport shoes since they are lightweight and airy.
  • Clothing: Take along some cycling attire, including shorts, t-shirts that can withstand perspiration, a fleece, a down jacket, a wool hat, gloves, and some underwear.
  • Sanitary: Sunscreen with an SPF of 30-50, lip balm, cold cream, moisturiser, body lotion, hand sanitizers, TP, wipes, antibacterial powder, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a quick-dry towel. Personal items like toilet paper, etc.

  • Headlamp/Led Torch are mandatory
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the sun by wearing sunglasses when riding.

  • Cycling Gear: A spare tube, a puncture repair kit, a headlamp, a water bottle, and protective knee and elbow protectors.
  • Day Pack: with water proof cover. 25 to 30 ltr.
  • Electronics: Optional Camera, USB Cable/Solar USB Charger, USB Charger/Earbuds

What kind of exciting journey can you expect to have while the Himalayas are all around you? Most of us probably picture going on a long hike or scaling a mountain. But a small bike adventure through the alleys of Naggar, Manali, is even more exciting. The Himalayan Adventure Trips crew gave me an unforgettable experience over the course of three days and two nights during my Navratri holidays. It was my first time doing anything like that, and I was blown away by the freedom of riding a bike around the city while taking in the majesty of the surrounding mountains. We also had a fantastic day at Jana Falls. The gorgeous hillstation of Manali is the perfect setting for a new riding journey, and learning about the local culture is essential. The efforts of the Himalayan Adventure Trips staff were commendable in every way. Feel free to go out into the unknown.

Chandigarh to Baghipul

The first day starts with a ride from Chandigarh to Shimla. From Shimla, you will have to drive to Narkanda and then drive to Nirmad, which is the biggest village of Himachal Pradesh. After we reach Nirmad, you will have to cross the river to get to Baghipul where you retire for the night. The distance between Shimla to Baghipul is approximately 140 km. There are local buses and shared taxis which will connect you with the same. There are plenty of guesthouses and hotels in Baghipul to choose from.

Baghipul to Thachru

Start early by taking a cab ride to Jaon, which is a small village and get ready for walking. We get the first glimpse of the Shrikhand peak from the village itself. The trek starts from Jaon and the first stop comes after 3 kms at a village called Singhaard. You can stop at Singhaard for some rest and refreshments. Then head out to your next destination, Barathi nala which is again about 3 km from Singhaard. Here you cross a bridge and move on to Thachru, which is at a distance of 10 km. This part of the trek is tough as the climb is steep. Here you have to climb the 80-degree steep land known as Danda Dhaar. This part of the trail is covered in Deodar forests. We reach Thachru and camp here for the night. During the yatra time, there are single/shared tents available. Food is also easily available at an affordable price.

Baghipul to Bheem Dwar

This day starts at 4 am and have a sumptuous breakfast and start walking towards Bheem Dwar. The first 3 km of the trail is a straight climb from Thachru to Kali ghati. From Kali Ghati you get a 360-degree view of the mountains around you. From Kali Ghati you move on to Bhim Talai which is around 1.5 km away. This distance is downhill. You can stop at Bhim Talai for some tea and refreshments. After some rest move on to Kunsa. This place is surrounded by big waterfalls and has an enchanting scenery. The next destination will be Bheem Dwar, which is a place full of rare flowers and shrubs. Bheem Dwar is used as grazing grounds by shepherds. This place is just below the Shrikhand Mountain. You continue walking towards Nain Sarovar for another 2 km. This lake is considered to be formed by the tears of Goddess Parvati. This lake remains usually partially frozen. After a short stop at the lake, move on to our final destination Shrikhand peak. This part of the trek is quite tough as it is full of moraines. You have to cross many small peaks in order to reach the Shrikhand peak and soon reach Bheem Baiee where you have to cross many stone tunnels and moraines again. From here you can see the peak clearly. In about an hour you reach the peak and the enchanting views fill you with a sense of victory. After taking gazillion pictures, start to retrace your steps to Bheem Dwar, where you camp again for the night.

Shrikhand Mahadev Trek

About shrikhand mahadev.

Shrikhand Mahadev Trek takes you to one of the most sacred adobes of Lord Shiva. There is a 75 feet high Shiva lingam situated at the top of the peak. There are no trees or any plants and the area is mostly covered in heavy snow throughout the year. The peak is accessible only for 20-30 days in the the months of June and July.  During this time, the local authorities conduct and maintain the official Shrikhand Yatra.

Shrikhand Mahadev trek is considered as one of the most difficult pilgrimages in India, because of the difficult terrain and extreme weather conditions. Hundreds of devotees perform this trek each year.  We have tried to provide the best possible information on this trek in this post. Please go through the available Photo Gallery and other details below.

Shrikhand mahadev yatra registration, s registration for the shrikhand mahadev yatra necessary .

During the Yatra period, registration is mandatory.

If you do this trek before Yatra period, you should enter your name in a register maintained by the Sadhus at Bharatinala. The official registration is not available during this period.

Why register for this trek ?

Registration is recommended for this trek as it helps track the number of pilgrims going up and thus necessary steps can be taken to support them in case of an emergency.

How do I register for the Shrikhand Mahadev Trek ?

Online registration is not available for this trek. You have to register with the authorities at Singhad. The authorities set up camps at Singhad during the yatra period.

Is a medical certificate necessary for Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra ?

Yes a medical fitness certificate is necessary to perform this trek during the yatra period. Some devotees do skip the registration, however it is not recommended. This is a tough and dangerous trek and you should be physically and mentally strong to complete it. Also, there is a low oxygen level at the top, and some pilgrims do fall ill due to lack of oxygen. Therefore, please keep it in mind while planning for the Shrikhand Mahadev Trek.

Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra Route

Although there are other routes towards Shrikhand Mahadev, however the official Yatra starts from Jaon Village. Starting from the first, we have listed the main stops during this trek below.

Jaon Village

Jaon Village is where the motorable road for this trek ends. Jaun village is 170 Kms from Shimla via Bagipul and Nirmand. From Jaon, you’ll have to walk on a Jungle trail towards Singhad.

Distance from Jaun to Singhad is approx 3 Kms. Singhad is the last village on the Shrikhand Mahadev Trek. A Shiva temple with a beautiful idol of Lord Shiva is situated in Singhad Village. The authorities setup camps in Singhad for registration purposes. Starting from Singhad till Bhimdwar, you’ll find various camps setup offering free food/ bhandara to the pilgrims.

Bharatinala

The next stoppage is Bharatinala  which is 3 Kms from Singhad. At Bharatinala, there is an Ashram of Juna Akhada where the the Sadhus maintain the record of the Yatris. They also offer accommodation and food to the pilgrims.

Please refill your water bottles in Bharatinala as there is no source of water before Kali top. However some dhabas on the way might offer some water to you if available.

From Bharatinala, the steep climb also known as Danda Dhar starts. Danda Dhar goes all the way till Kali Top. The next stop would be Thachru, however there is a spot before Thachru where people have camps setup for trekkers.

Thachru is approx 5 Kms from Bharatinala. Thachru is the last place where you’ll see trees in this trek. After Thachru, the tree line starts decreasing and totally ends when you reach Kali top.

Kali Top is 3 kms from Thachru and it is the highest point in the area. Named after goddess Kali, it has a small stone temple dedicated to goddess Kali. You’ll get the best view of the Shrikhand peak and Shivalingam from Kali Top. The whole view from here is totally mesmerizing and makes you realize the grandness of the Himalayas. Although there are some camps at Kali top, but most trekkers prefer to continue further for overnight stay either at Bhim tal, Kunsha or Bhim Dwar if time allows. However, if you reach Kalitop in the evening, we would recommend you to stay overnight here only.

Bhim Tal or Bhim Talai

From Kali top, there is a trail downwards to Bhimtalai which is 2 kms approx. It is said that Bhim (Bheema) created the small pond situated here, hence the name Bhim taal. The next stop would be Kunsha which is another 2 Kms from here. There are 4 small glaciers formed on water streams, on the way till Bhimdwar which you have to cross very carefully.

Kunsha is unarguably one of the most beautiful spots during this trek till now. The distance between Bhimtal to Kunsha is 2 Kms approx. This place is extremely beautiful and very photogenic. After Kunsha, you’ll have to walk another 3 Kms towards Bhim Dwar. The trail between Kunsha to Bhimdwar is narrow but easy to walk.

Bhimdwar is the place which is said to be inhabited by the Pandavas for some period. Bhim Dwar is treated as a base camp for Shrikhand trek, as there is no accommodation options as you go up further except Parvati Bagh.

Parvati Bagh

Distance from Parvati Bagh to Bhimdwar distance is around 2 kms and it also has a few accommodation options during the Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra. However stay at Bhimtal is preferred by most pilgrims as Parvati Bagh has a very few camps available. If one does not find accommodation there, then the only option left would be to come down 2 kms to Bhimdwar. It has happened to people many time, thus plan accordingly.

Nain Sarovar Lake

Now after Parvati Bagh, the next waypoint is the Nain Sarovar Lake. The distance from Parvati Bagh to Nain Sarovar lake is around 2 kms. This  lake is considered as a very holy lake and some people even take a dip in the icy cold water of the Nain Sarovar lake for blessings. From Nain Sarovar the terrain gets tougher and the trail gets narrow. This is where the trek gets toughest. Shrikhand Mahadev Peak is approx 6 kms from here.

Just before the Shrikhand Mahadev Peak, you’ll find huge boulders known as Bhim Bahi. There are very distinct marks on these stones, which are said to be written by Bhim while he was building a stairway to heaven.

The Shrikhand Mahadev Peak

After crossing the Bhim Bahi, you’ll finally reach the magnificent Shrikhand Mahadev Peak. The view from up here would be absolutely amazing if the weather allows you to see anything. People usually take off their shoes out of respect, when approaching the 75 feet Shiva Lingam(approx) to take blessings. The trek downhill is equally challenging if not more.

Please note that if you have any respiratory problems, please consult a doctor before attempting to do this trek. This is because the oxygen levels are low at the top. Due to this, it is also recommended to start the climb downwards as soon as possible and not to stay at the top for long.

Hope, it will be helpful for the fellow travelers during their trek. Please feel free to contact us for any additional information about the trek. May your journey be safe and successful by the grace of Lord Shiva!

Fascinating legends surround this site of worship that of a demon named Bhasmasur who had meditated at the spot to please the Lord Shiva through hard penance was awarded the power of turning every living being to ash upon touching. The abode of the Lord stands across a backdrop of the breathtaking Himalayan panorama. The mountain ranges of Kullu, Jorkandan, and Rangrik rise prominently. The ranges of Kinnaur and Hansbeshan along with peaks to the south-east of the Satluj River too adorn the skies here. Approximately taking 5-9 days from Delhi, involving 3 days of hike, this trek is a welcoming option to holiday away from hustle bustle of city life. There are considerably challenging gradients found on this hike-- steep angled inclines that passes through glacial covers and rocky boulder moraine teasing your hunger for adventure to the fullest. If you take a shine to this hike, look to cover the trip during July. Every year, during this time, the route remains open for only 15-20 days, owing to critical weather conditions.

What is Shrikhand Mahadev Trek?

Set in the backdrop of Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh, Shrikhand Mahadev is a renowned Hindu pilgrimage as well as a destination for die-hard trekkers. Flagging off from Jaon village in Nirmand, the trek takes up to 3-4 days to reach the summit. Harsh weather conditions plague this route, for which only 15-20 days opening in the month of July is possible. Mountain goers choose this one to get a glimpse of the breathtaking Himalayas from the green bosom of Parvati Valley. A vast panorama of stunning snow-clad peaks open up before us-- the ranges of Kullu, the Rangrik mountains on the Kinnaur side, and the undulations of Jorkandan, and the peaks of Hansbeshan and the surrounding slopes to the east of river Satluj enchantingly flowing. In the first quarters, the trek moves through the Great Himalayan National Park on the Kullu side of Himachal Pradesh. Myriad apple orchards on the way lighten up the trail; you can find the local workers with baskets tied to their back picking the blush red fruits. From Thachru onwards, the forests begin thick and quaint, punctuated with gurgling streams and many water bodies. The trek continues on a narrow track by the Shrikhand River. A steep climb ensues from Barahati to Thachru on an 80 degree incline. Moving forward towards Kaali Ghati, the number of trees will lessen and more of denuded snow covered slopes will be dominating the landscape. The snow covered Shrikhand Shiva Lingam too manifests afar looking spectacular. Up ahead from Bheem Dwari, we will be coming upon a resplendent valley of flowers, a little way up, begins the climb to Parvati Bag. Expect excruciatingly challenging inclines from the snow laden Parvati Bag meadows and a thorough test of your caliber before finally reaching the standing rock on the hill top iconized as Shrikhand Mahadev.
