Three Week Traveller

3-Week Southern Europe: 4 Itineraries

DISCLAIMER: This post might have links to travel services and products that we enjoy. We might make a commission from it at no extra cost to you.

The south of Europe is probably one of the most famous destinations in the world when it comes to stunning beaches, tasty dishes, and historical sites. From the coast of Portugal, France, Italy, Spain, and Croatia to Cyprus and Greece – you won’t run out of places to explore.

This region has so much to offer that it gets super crowded during the peak season, plus the price hikes can be incredibly too much if you plan to make a last-minute trip. But don’t worry. You can do many things to ensure you will have the trip you imagined.

This list of travel itineraries for 3-week Southern Europe will help you find a route that works for you. You will also find some tips on how to plan your trip, where to go, and more.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE GOING TO SOUTHERN EUROPE

4 images - top right is the statues in ancient ruins of Athens, top right is the Eiffel Tower, bottom right is the Medieval walls in Croatia, bottom left is La Sagrada Familia in Spain - 3-Week Southern Europe Itinerary

Let’s start with basic information such as when to go, how many days to spend in each place, the best way to get around, the estimated cost, and the travel documents you need. You should also read our list of best 3-week cruises .

When is the best time to go to Southern Europe

If you’re after the beach and water activities, the summer (June to August) is a great time to visit the south of Europe . But it’s also the peak season, which means the prices are higher than usual and booking your accommodation must be done in advance (at least 6 months or even a year).

For those who want to avoid the busy crowd and high prices, September to October or March to May is the best time to visit Southern Europe . The weather is neither too hot nor cold, the prices are reasonable, and there are fewer people.

Are 3 weeks enough for South Europe

20 days can offer a rewarding experience exploring Southern Europe, though you’ll have to prioritise . For example, Cities like Rome, Barcelona, and Athens provide rich historical and cultural immersion. The Amalfi Coast in Italy and the beaches of the Greek Islands like Santorini or Mykonos are perfect for relaxation and breathtaking vistas.

You might also consider adding less-touristy destinations like Portugal, Montenegro, Croatia, and Malta. What you want to avoid is trying to do too much . Seeing more than 3 countries is a little over the top. You’ll catch flights and wait in bus terminals instead of relaxing.

What to pack

For summer in Southern Europe, lightweight, breathable clothing is key, along with a high SPF sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat to shield from the intense sun, especially on a trip from May to September.

A waterproof jacket and boots are a must during the rainy season. Regardless of the season, a power bank, your phone, an extra emergency credit/debit card, and your passport are the top items not to forget.

Our general 3-week packing list is a great place to start. Then, visit our packing list for summer , spring , autumn , and winter , which you should check out depending on the season you plan to go.

How to get around

To get around South Europe, you will have to use a combination of trains, buses, planes, and ferries . If you plan to rent a car, some can be taken across the border, but not all, so remember to check that out from the rental agency.

The bus option will be the most affordable but the slowest. The trains are fast and well-priced , but not always an option. Flying is a good choice if you want to save time , especially for domestic. The prices are higher in peak season though.

For within the cities, there are ride-hailing apps you should install on your phone , such as Uber, Bolt, iMove, Beat, and Free Now are the ones available. Not all these apps work in all the countries listed, so ensure you have the right one before arriving at your destination.

I feel like transportation is one of the most time-consuming parts of travel planning. You can forego all of that by booking a 3-week tour package where the company you pay will handle everything for you.

Language and currency

Southern Europe has various languages as there is not one language. However, since it’s a popular area for foreign visitors, you will be able to get around with English and the help of a translation app just fine.

Euro (€ ) is the main currency here. However, some areas might still be using their own currency, such as Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Paying with a bank card is easily accessible , but you must still carry some cash , especially when visiting rural areas.

Average travel cost for 20 days in South Europe

The cost varies a lot depending on when you plan to visit. During the busiest season, the accommodations are almost double the cost. However, on average, you should plan to spend around €150 a day (€3,000) covering accommodation, food, transportation, and tour.

For backpackers, you can budget €100 per day (€2,000), if you don’t mind staying in hostels, booking tip-based walking tours, and using public transportation. For mid-range cost, €120 to €150 (€2,400 to €3,000) is a good budget for mid-range hotels, food, tours, and transportation.

A luxury trip, a budget of €300 to €450 (€6,000 to €9,000) and more . You’ll be able to stay in 5-star hotels, fine dining restaurants, premium tours, spas and massages, and more.

3-WEEK SOUTHERN EUROPE ITINERARY

Itinerary #1: italy, spain, and france.

This is an awesome itinerary if it’s your first time in Europe. You’ll have a chance to visit top historical sites, adventurous islands, exciting water activities, and try out local dishes. Because these three places are next to each other, you won’t be wasting too much time in airports and transport terminals.

Starting your trip in Italy is ideal since many international flights are landing and leaving here. Flying between Italy and Spain is not a probably either. If you’re on a budget, you can easily take a bus that will cross the border.

Finishing a trip in France means you can find many flights leaving Paris and returning home. Imagine a trip ending in a culturally rich city featuring many fantastic attractions. For a more in-depth plan, see our 3 weeks in France, Italy, and Spain itinerary .

Italy for 1 week

There are lots of places to see in Italy, such as the Colosseo, the Roman Forum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Venice Grand Canal, and the active volcano of Mount Etna. It can be hard to choose where to go if you only have 7 days.

It’s also not a secret that Italy is a destination perfect for couples . You can start your trip with a gondola ride along Venice canals, dine at Italy’s food capital Bologna, and finish your trip with a glass of wine at Sicily. These three are some of the most romantic places in Italy .

If you like history, go to Rome or then make your way towards south to Sicily , where you could enjoy the beautiful coastline of Naples and do water activities in Sicily. Y ou can also go north of Rome and discover Florence, Pisa, Bologna, and Venice , where you can explore Italian fashion, food, and architecture, then finish off by getting on the dreamy gondola ride.

One thing to consider is, when it comes to your end destination in Italy, make sure there’s a direct flight or easy way to get from there to your first destination in Spain. For example, if you end up in Catania (Sicily), there’s a non-stop flight to Barcelona in Spain.

2 images - on the left is Colosseo in Rome, Italy. On the right is the waterfalls in Krka National Park in Croatia

Spain for 1 week

A 3-week Southern Europe trip must include Spain. With its rich history, friendly culture, and yummy dishes, there’s always something to do whether you’ve visited before or have been here a hundred times.

But when it comes to Southern Europe and Spain, we’re talking about the coastal cities and islands such as Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga, Palma, and the party island Ibiza.

The Andalusian region, with cities like Seville, Granada, and Malaga, offers a blend of Moorish architecture and Flamenco passion . Catalonia boasts the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona alongside picturesque coastal towns like Sitges.

Valencia is loved for its futuristic architecture and lush orchards, while the Balearic Islands serve as a Mediterranean paradise. And when it comes to partying, don’t miss a crazy night out on Ibiza Island.

France for 1 week

When it comes to France, perhaps you only want to see the southern parts, such as the Riviera, Nice, and Marseille . The Southern French coastline, a jewel of the Mediterranean, draws travellers with its azure waters, white-sand beaches, and glamorous lifestyle.

Cities like Nice, Cannes, and Marseille serve as perfect bases for exploring quaint coastal villages, historic landmarks, and natural wonders. Whether you’re sipping rosé in a beachfront café in St. Tropez, hiking in the Calanques National Park, or soaking up art and history in Aix-en-Provence.

You can fly from Barcelona on a direct flight or Valencia with a connection to Paris. Flying from Ibiza (Spain) to Nice (France) is also possible. You can finish your trip in Paris, where you can wrap up your trip by exploring the Eiffel Tower, Versailles, the Catacombs, and the iconic Champs-Élysées.

Itinerary #2: Greece, Croatia, and Italy

This is actually my personal favourite itinerary in this 3-week Southern Europe article. It’s because it’s a perfect balance of famous areas, good food, and unexpected destinations . Italy and Greece are both amazing regions regarding history, ruins, and food.

Italy is an expensive country, but don’t worry. The affordable Croatia and Greece will balance it out. Croatia might not be on your radar of places to go, but it’s definitely worth a visit. If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, you can also visit some remarkable filming locations.

Italy is a classic destination and surely a must-visit at least once in your lifetime. The fact that the country was able to preserve many historical sites is just incredible. For those who love to explore the local cuisine , you can never go wrong about spending a week in Italy and eating out every single day.

When choosing where to go in Italy for 7 days, don’t try to see more than 2 cities . Focus either in the north where you can visit Milan and Venice or Florence and Bologna, for example. In the south, you can discover Sicily for a week.

At the same time, Rome and Naples are a good combo since they’re not too far from one another and offer historical sites, great beaches, and tasty food. A 3-week Southern Europe itinerary must include Italy, especially if it’s your first time in Europe.

Croatia for 1 week

For hiking enthusiasts, Croatia is filled with exciting national parks, waterfalls, and perfect beaches. If you’re not a big city lover, skip Zagreb. You can head right to its magical waterfalls, such as the ones in Krka National Park and Plitvice Lakes .

Those who enjoyed watching Game of Thrones, don’t miss out on visiting Dubrovnik , where you can walk through GOT filming locations . Visiting waterfalls and Dubrovnik is a great itinerary for 7 days in Croatia, but swapping one of the locations with Split and Hvar (great for beaches and water activities), is a good idea, too.

2 images - on the left is the white stone houses in Santorini Greece. On the right is the dome of Pantheon in France

Greece for 1 week

Finish your trip to the unbelievable Greece – another great destination for history, food, and beaches. Discover the birthplace of Democracy, The Olympics, the home of Socrates , and interestingly, the inventor of alarm clocks, maps, and umbrellas.

If you’ve never been here, you can honestly just stay in Athens, where there are plenty of things to do. From here, you can choose one island to explore and relax . Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, and Paros are all easy to reach from Athens (either by plane or ferry).

We also have itineraries for 3 weeks in Greece , 3 weeks in Croatia , and 3 weeks in Greece and Croatia together.

Itinerary #3: France, Italy, and Greece

This itinerary is what I love to call “ beach, history, and food trail” . French, Italian, and Greek food are all popular when it comes to mouth-watering dishes and wines. While in history, all countries have managed to preserve so many remarkable sites and arts.

Finally, for those who want to enjoy the beautiful and warm Mediterranean Sea, all three countries offer unique experiences. I recommend starting in France since the airports there are major hubs that have direct flights to North America, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

France is the biggest country out of these three, so you must choose your destinations wisely. If you don’t care about the big city of Paris and prefer the countryside, head down to Southern France and enjoy the Alps for hiking and the coastal cities for the beach .

Western France is a good choice for a less-touristy region with a visit to the Northern part (Dunkirk, Calais, and Caen) for a perfect historical itinerary. You don’t need to return to Paris to catch your flight to Italy. If you finish in Eastern France, you can take a train or bus to Northern Italy or fly from Lyon, Marseille, or Cannes.

Continue your 3 weeks in Southern France by exploring Rome and the Vatican for its ancient ruins . In comparison, B ologna and Venice are great food destinations . Sicily, Naples, and Bari are all fantastic areas to go hiking, enjoy the beach, and relax for a week .

You can easily get around Italy by train ; if the drive is longer than 6 hours, look at domestic flights. Since your next destination is Greece, you might want to end your trip in a bigger city that caters direct flights to Athens, such as from Rome, Venice, and Milan.

2 images - on the left is the Medieval Walls on the coast of Dubrovnik Croatia. On the right is La Sagrada Familia in Spain

Greece is the gateway of ancient ruins . Start with Athens, where the Acropolis stands as a testament to the country’s rich history. For natural beauty, Meteora’s monasteries perched on towering rocks are a surreal sight to the must-see Delphi and the ruins of Olympia.

With its iconic white-washed buildings and sunset views, Santorini is perfect for romance and relaxation. If you’re more of an adventurer, the island of Crete offers the Samaria Gorge for hiking and beautiful beaches like Elafonissi.

Itinerary #4: Croatia, Montenegro, and Malta

This itinerary is perfect for people who want to get out of the usual tourist trail and explore the region of Southern Europe that is less travelled. Croatia can be busy, but nothing compared to Italy, France, and Spain.

While Malta can be a bit expensive, it’s a really nice place to do some surfing, visit ancient temples, appreciate Baroque architecture, and discover unique cuisine. Conversely, Montenegro is known for its interesting stone houses, calm beaches, and the untamed beauty of Durmitor National Park.

This Balkan beauty offers a compelling mix of history, stunning landscapes, and azure waters. For fans of Game of Thrones, a stroll through the medieval walls of Dubrovnik is a must. If nature is your calling, Plitvice Lakes National Park and its cascading waterfalls will mesmerise you.

Looking for a beach escape? The islands of Hvar and Brac are perfect for soaking up the sun and enjoying water activities. Don’t overlook Split, where the ancient Diocletian’s Palace offers a blend of history and vibrant modern life.

2 images - on the left is the houses along the beautiful Kotor Bay with mountain views. On the right is the colourful houses on the street of Valleta in Malta

Montenegro for 1 week

Is Montenegro worth a visit? Definitely, it’s a lesser-known gem that offers a rich mix of experiences. Check out the medieval Kotor Old Town, perfect for history buffs . If beaches are more your style, head to Budva. Don’t skip Durmitor National Park for a nature escape, known for its stunning landscapes.

Getting to Montenegro from Croatia looks complicated, but it’s actually not. There’s a bus that will take you from Dubrovnik to Kotor, and the drive is around 3 hours. But if you’re coming from Zagreb or other parts of Croatia, it might be better to fly, although expect a connecting flight.

Malta for 1 week

For Croatia and Montenegro, 7 days might be too short, but it’s the perfect amount of time for Malta . Don’t dismiss this country; although small in size, there’s honestly so much to see.

This Mediterranean jewel is a paradise for history enthusiasts, beachgoers, and food lovers alike. Start with the ancient city of Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site brimming with Baroque architecture and historic forts.

Take a ferry to Gozo for a quieter vibe and explore the Ġgantija Temples , some of the world’s oldest freestanding structures. If you’re a fan of diving or snorkelling, the Blue Grotto and the Azure Window are must-see underwater havens.

Since Malta is in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, it can be challenging to catch a flight home. In this situation, plan to fly from Malta to either Paris, Rome, Madrid, or London, where you can catch a direct flight from bigger airports to your next destination or a plane back home.

MUST-TRY SOUTHERN EUROPEAN DISHES AND DRINKS

3 images of food - on the left is paella, in the middle is moussaka, on the right is peka - 3-Week Southern Europe Itinerary

I personally cannot decide which cuisine in Southern Europe I love the most. Each has its own unique and remarkable dishes. I could eat paella every weekend and devour tiramisu right after while washing it down with some Bordeaux wine.

You can always go right with visiting Southern Europe. You can find the oldest republic here and the smallest states in the world. This region has 16 countries and three Peninsulas, including the Apennine Peninsula, the Iberian Peninssula, and the Balkan Peninsula.

Southern Europe is a must-visit because it perfectly balances historical sites and alluring landscapes, ideal for nature lovers and history buffs. The countries are brimming with culture with their well-preserved infrastructures, and every country or region has their own cuisine or speciality that you seriously would need to try out.

I have to warn you, this article of 2 weeks in South Europe has 4 itineraries and is a long read. Remember to bookmark it so you can come back and find it easier.

BASIC TRAVEL INFORMATION FOR SOUTH EUROPE

When planning your trip and writing your travel itinerary , information such as weather, cost, transportation, language, and currency are some of the basic yet essential things to know. Here are the details for South Europe:

When is the best time to go to Southern Europe

Southern Europe generally has a Mediterranean climate, so it’s not too cold during winter, unlike in the Northern region.

However, the best way to enjoy your stay here, especially if you are fond of hiking, is to visit during spring from April to May or Autumn from September to October. These are also the months with fewer tourists and lower costs for airfare and accommodations.

The peak season is during the summer, from June to August. For those fond of skiing and snow-related sports, the winter season in Southern Europe is from December to February.

Are 2 weeks enough for South Europe

14 days can be enough for a vacation in Southern Europe, but managing expectations and prioritising destinations is essential. For example, don’t try to see 3 countries, that’s a little too much, and you’ll spend more days at airports or bus stations than exploring.

Plan to see no more than 2 countries and around 3-4 cities. Also, choose countries near one another or with a direct flight. You could also save time if you plan your itinerary to end in a city that has a flight home to save more time.

If you want to include cities or destinations that are not in South Europe, we have a compilation of itineraries for 2 weeks in Europe and 2 weeks in Eastern Europe

Getting around

The most recommended option for getting around Southern Europe is by train as most of the countries have high-speed train services and it is cheaper, so this is an efficient way to travel. However, you could travel by plane for those in a time crunch.

Language and currency

Southern Europe is linguistically diverse. Some of the languages spoken in this region include Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Greek, Catalan, and Albanian. English is widely spoken in tourist areas across Southern Europe, and many people working in hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions have at least a basic level of English proficiency.

However, English speakers may be less familiar with rural areas or less touristy destinations. It’s often appreciated if you learn a few basic phrases in the local language, such as “hello,” “please,” and “thank you,”. Not only does this show respect for the local culture, but it can also enhance your travel experience and help establish a rapport with the locals.

Most countries in South Europe use the Euros as the main currency. Many places accept card payments, but it’s vital that you carry cash with you at all times in case your card doesn’t work or the business only accepts cash.

Most countries in Southern Europe are part of the EU’s Schengen Area program. This means that it follows the same visa policy and implements it as one country.

Most visitors with passports from the America, Oceania, and some East and Southeast Asian countries can enter and stay in the Schengen Area for 90 days.

If you’re not a citizen of those countries, you must apply for a Schengen visa as early as 6 months in advance. You can lodge your application at the embassy of your first destination in South Europe.

What is the average cost for 2 weeks in Southern Europe

Budget : For frugal travellers, spending around $1,200 – $2,000 is feasible. This includes staying in hostels, eating at inexpensive restaurants, using public transport, and focusing on free or low-cost attractions.

Mid-range : A mid-range budget is approximately $2,500 – $3,000 if you opt for more comfort without extravagance. This allows for stays in 3-star hotels, dining at mid-range restaurants, some guided tours, and occasional taxi rides.

Luxury : For a l avish experience, expect to spend $4,000 – $6,000 or more . This includes 5-star accommodations, fine dining, private tours, and luxury transportation.

2 WEEKS IN SOUTH EUROPE ITINERARY

These itineraries consist of countries grouped together depending on the type of trip you prefer, such as slow travel, jam-packed travels, a trip focused on natural sceneries or historical structures, places with a wide variety of food and activities, and the like.

You can customise this according to your preference. It only serves as a guide on what significant attractions and activities you could go to or do in every location.

Itinerary #1: Portugal and Spain

Our first itinerary option for 14 days in Southern Europe features Portugal and Spain. Portugal is located on the Iberian Peninsula. It is one of the oldest countries in Europe and has a profound influence on architecture, linguistics, and overall cultural impact all over the globe. It is known for Fado music, Port wine, codfish, and the world-famous football player Cristiano Ronaldo.

Spain is a country that is also located on the Siberian Peninsula, with parts of its territory across the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Spain is well-known for its literature, siesta, bullfights, arts, islands, beaches, and wines.

This itinerary is suitable for people who want to experience the best of both worlds, art, history, and nature, specifically coastlines, white sand, and sunsets by the beach. We also have itineraries for 2 weeks in Portugal only.

Lisbon for 3 days

Lisbon is the capital and largest city in Portugal. It is famous for ornate architecture, colonial history, and tasty canned sardines. It is also well-known for its hilltop vistas, pleasant weather all year round, and blue and white-covered tile facades, among others.

It is a perfect starting point for your travel because you can go to the Algarve region, south of Lisbon, for water activities or to Porto, the northern part of the country, for hiking. Some must-visit locations in Lisbon include Belem, Cabo da Roca, Santa Justa Lift, Sintra, National Tile Museum, and more.

Algarve Region for 4 days

Algarve is the Southernmost part of Portugal and the biggest and most important tourist region. It is well-known for its picture-perfect villages, sumptuous seafood, cliff-backed beaches, and its people, who have a warm and welcoming vibe.

Some must-visit locations here include Praia da Marinha, Albufeira Beach, Benagil Caves, Ponta de Piedade rocky cliffs, Sagres, and Bordeira’s Beach, among others.

Most, if not all, of the attractions here include or are related to beaches. You could also surf or kitesurf to your heart’s content for active people. Other things to do here are ceramic shopping and day trips to Ferragudo and Carvoeiro.

If you are coming from Lisbon, a bus ride is the cheapest and, at times, the easiest mode of transport. Travel time from Lisbon to Lagos, the most popular area to stay at, is 4 hours. Other options include travelling by train, by car, and by flying.

Faro is Algarve’s airport, so you’ll land here. Travel time usually takes 45 minutes. To save money, you’ll have to look for flights in advance if you want to travel by flying.

Madrid for 3 days

Madrid is the capital and most populous city in Spain. It is well-known for one of the world’s most famous football teams, Real Madrid. Aside from that, it is also a World Heritage site and known for flamenco. You can dine in the world’s oldest restaurant here as well.

Some of Madrid’s tourist attractions are Gran Via, Museo del Prado, Plaza Mayor, Royal Palace, and Real Madrid’s Stadium, Santiago Benebeu.

The distance between Faro to Madrid is 526.3 km. The most recommended mode of transportation to reach Madrid is to fly as it is the cheapest and fastest with a travel time of a little more than 4 hours. It costs anywhere from $24 to $116.

Barcelona for 4 days

Barcelona is the capital and the largest city in the Catalonia region. If Madrid is well-known for its football club, Barcelona has one as well, which is FC Barcelona. This city is a world-renowned travel destination because of its Michelin-starred restaurants, surreal architecture by Gaudi, majestic beaches, good weather, and well-preserved historical sites.

Some top spots here include Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Casa Battlo, and Picasso Museum.

If you’re travelling from Madrid to Barcelona, go take the train. The travel time lasts about 2 hours and 30 minutes, costing anywhere from $50 to $80. The cheapest option is to fly, but it may take longer than the train.

It’s perfect to finish the trip here because you can relax and enjoy the beach and it has an international airport that will take you anywhere in Europe and even back home.

Itinerary #2: Spain and France

I previously mentioned that Spain is famous for its beaches, but only some of it offers. This country also has volcanoes, deserts, wetlands, and mountains. You’ll be able to see diverse sceneries here. Aside from that, Spanish cuisine, such as paellas and tapas, is also a must-try.

France is easily the most visited country in the world. Humans have inhabited it since the Paleolithic area, so one can only imagine the amount of history and culture that could be found in this country. It is a global centre of philosophy, art, and science and has the fifth-largest number of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

This itinerary is also perfect for people who simultaneously love historical and intricate architecture and beaches. If you just want to see Spain, take a look at our 2 weeks in France itineraries .

2 images - Parc de Guell in Barcelona and Cote d'Azur in Nice

The second itinerary for your two weeks in South Europe starts in Madrid. Aside from the other things mentioned in the previous itinerary, Madrid is well-known for its seafood and experiences 300 days of sun in a year.

As for the activities, you could try out their delicious tapas, shop until you drop, stroll along their parks, avail of day tours and attend festivals. It is the perfect starting point because other cities are easily accessible from here, and you could have a DIY walking tour as there are just so many sights to see.

Malaga for 4 days

Malaga is located in the autonomous region of Andalusia. It is famous for its golf courses, nice weather, and beaches. This is also Pablo Picasso’s birthplace, so you see the legacy he left behind here. Some must-visit locations here include Old Town, Alcazaba, Castillo de Gibralfaro, Teatro Romano, Puerto de Malaga, Playa de La Malagueta, and Museo Picasso.

The distance from Madrid to Malaga is 536 km, and the most recommended option is by train, which has a travel time of almost 3 hours. The ticket costs anywhere between $40 – $70. The cheapest option is by bus; other options include driving and flying.

Paris for 3 days

Aside from being called the City of Love, Paris is also known as the City of Light because more than 300 illuminated structures can be found here. It has 450 parks and gardens, so this city is a haven for all nature lovers, and the museums here are just on a whole new level.

Speaking of museums, one of the things that you could do here is explore the Louvre, which is actually the biggest museum in the world. Did you know that it would take 200 days for you to see everything that the Louvre has to offer?

And that’s considering that you stare at the artwork for an estimated 30 seconds. Alas, we only have 2 weeks in South Europe!

To reach Paris, if you’re from Malaga, the most suitable option would be to fly to Paris Orly. It has a travel time of more than 5 hours. Taking the train or driving will take too much time.

Marseille or Nice for 4 days

For your last stop, it’s either Marseille or Nice. Marseille is perfect for history lovers, while Nice is more suitable for visiting beaches and learning about the city’s history. I picked Nice to add to this itinerary because you’ll get the best of both nature and culture here.

Nice is located on the French Riviera and is the second-largest French city. Aside from its natural resources, it is also famous for its century-old promenade, old town, and museums. You can also attend their Carnival de Nice, which lasts two weeks every February.

You can fly to Marseille and Nice from Paris, which takes 1 hr and 30 minutes. If you decide to rent a car, you can also drive, but it’s about 7 to 9 hours covering 775 km or more (482 mi).

Itinerary #3: Italy and Croatia

Italy is a country in Western and Southern Europe. It is located in the Mediterranean Sea and has a peninsula delimited by the Alps. It shares land borders with Austria, Slovenia , France, and Switzerland and enclaves San Marino and Vatican City microstates.

Italy is well-known for manufacturing luxury cars such as Lamborghini, Maserati, and Ferrari. The Vespa is also an iconic Italian thing. There are also tons of renowned Italian sculptors and painters, so you can imagine the plethora of museums and galleries they have here.

Croatia has a coast that lies entirely on the Adriatic Sea. It is known for its scenic pebbled beaches, wines, national parks, seafood, and sailing. They also host tons of festivals here, including Sonus, Fresh Island Festival, and Ultra Europe.

This itinerary suits people who love history, food, and nature. Check out our 2 weeks in Italy to see if that’s something you want to consider. You can even spend your 2-week honeymoon in Europe around Italy.

Milan or Florence for 4 days

Milan might be a better place to stay due to its busy international airport, but Florence has an extensive railway network making it easy to get to other parts of Italy. However, these locations have different charms, and it’s up to you to decide which one you’ll choose.

Milan is the capital city of the Lombardy region. It is well-known for its natural lakes, world-class fashion scene, musical culture, shopping, and nightlife.

On the other hand, Florence is home to some of the most exquisite art collections and is a haven for people fond of Renaissance art. It is also famous for its vineyards, rolling hills, galleries, and museums. Medieval towns such as Bologna or Modena are also must-visits, plus it’s near the famous Tower of Pisa.

Visiting Europe has to include Rome. It is the capital city of Italy and the Lazio region. It is Italy’s most visited tourist destination. It is the birthplace of both Neoclassicism and Baroque styles. UNESCO lists its historic centre as a World Heritage site.

Rome is well-known for its beautiful architecture, historical sites, food, and the Vatican City. Some places to visit here include Colosseum, Roman Forum, St. Peter’s Basilica, Pantheon, Catacombs, and Villa Borghese.

The most recommended travel option from Milan to Rome is the train, with an average travel time of 3 hr and 35 min. The cheapest option is riding the bus, but it would take almost 9 hours to reach your destination.

Zagreb for 3 days

Zagreb is the largest and is the capital city of Croatia. It is rich in history dating back even to Roman times. It is one of Europe’s most exciting destinations because of its street food, public art, parks, coffee culture, and quirky museums.

Dubrovnik for 4 days

With 2 weeks in Southern Europe, you can visit 2 cities in Croatia. The second one is Dubrovnik. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean area. It is included in UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites because of its fortified old town and medieval architecture.

It is famous for its scenic landscapes, architecture, rich history and culture. Some locations here were also featured in Game of Thrones. Some tours will take you to the filming locations too.

If you’re coming from Zagreb, flying to Dubrovnik only takes 2 hours. The cheapest option is to ride the bus, but it has a travel time of more than 9 hours.

Greece is a country situated on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula. It has the longest Mediterranean Basin coastline and thousands of islands. Greece is well-known for its ancient philosophers, archaeological sites, baklava, gyros, halves, kataifi, and beautiful islands. This country also invented the Olympics.

Malaga is one of the world’s oldest cities, meaning there is so much culture and history in this place’s every nook and cranny. In fact, it used to be under the Arab Caliphate, Roman Empire, and Castilian Crown, and you will see these cultures in many of their establishments and ruins. This place is famous for its museums. In fact, it is even nicknamed the City of Museums because it has around 40 of them.

Aside from that, there are also tons of wineries and Michelin-starred restaurants here. Malaga is famous for its sunshine and beaches if you prefer nature.

Aside from the world-class architecture, Barcelona is also well-known for its beaches, abandoned metro stations, flamenco and Sardana, festivals and street parties, the most famous of which is La Merce, held every 24th of September.

THIS IS WHAT AWAITS IN EUROPE

Towering castles. Untamed natural beauty. Captivating history. Can’t-miss cuisine. This is your time, your moment, your chance to discover Europe.

Destination Must-Sees

Greece Must see takeover

One of the most well-known tourist destinations in Greece, Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, known as the “Valley of the Gods.” Surrounded by beautiful scenery from the Arcadian Mountains, it is home of the first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B. Step into history when you walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium or witness amazing sculptures at the museum.

paris europe mustsees

France’s romantic capital is a must-see destination, and a gorgeous gateway to the wonders the rest of this country has to offer. Whether your ideal Parisian getaway has you spending some free time sipping coffee at a café and watching the bustling city life, roaming the halls of art at the Louvre, or exploring the bohemian artist’s haven — the Montmartre neighborhood, there’s rich history and culture abound in every corner of the City of Light.

Europe ms1

Irish countryside:

Take in the atmosphere of quaint seaside villages, see awe inspiring views of the Lakes of Killarney and explore the picturesque town of Kinsale. Wherever you travel in the countryside, you’ll find that the rolling hills and friendly people you encounter will become a part of your fabric.

Europe ms2

Ancient cities of Italy:

Italy is positively brimming with the world’s most famous Roman ruins like the Colosseum, Pompeii and many other relics from the ancient past. In fact, many cities in Italy still hold evidence of what once was. You can find an aqueduct, city gate, Roman theater or the ruins of an entire city there.

Destination Must-Dos

Greece Must dos takeoverv2

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

Palace of Versailles France2022

The Palace of Versailles

The iconic Palace of Versailles (UNESCO) and its gardens reflect the extravagant tastes of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Alongside a local guide, learn the history and admire the various rooms of the State Apartments, including the Queen's bedchamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Be sure to explore the incredible gardens, some of the most famous in the world, which took over 40 years to complete and include intricate architecture, elaborate fountains, and gorgeous statues.

Europe md2

Drift down a canal:

While canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Locals like to say the best way to explore the city is to ‘get lost.’ So take a ride along these waterways, step off and then wind your way through the intricate blend of bridges, narrow streets and grand squares.

Spain md4

This was the first capital of Spain located about 43 miles south of Madrid. The history of Toledo dates back to the Roman occupation circa 192 B.C. The old city of Toledo sits atop of a small mountain surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, and medieval walls on the fourth. From the top of the mountain you can get a 180 degree view of the surrounding landscape.

Magnificent landscapes combined with the country’s charming traditions and customs offer new experiences unlike anywhere else in the world. Famous for bullfighting, Spain allows you to grab life by the horns and dive into adventure. Whether it’s the eye-catching architecture of Madrid, the bold Spanish wines, or the shimmering Costa del Sol, this country remains a delight to the senses. Once you experience Spain, you’ll never want to leave and when you do, you’ll always be craving more.

Whether it’s old-world traditions and wonderful culture, cuisine, history, fashion or natural beauty, Italy is special to many people for different reasons. Few other countries boast so many legendary cities. There are also many charming hill towns and coastal villages that showcase Italy’s amazing natural beauty. From the big cities to the small towns, there is always something exciting to see in Italy. With so many reasons to visit, the rest is up to you!

A rendezvous with a magnifique experience awaits! As cliché as it sounds, France truly has something for everyone. With over two dozen cities, each with their own nuances of the French culture and contributions to its history, architecture, art and last but not least, the gastronomical delights that the French are famous for throughout the world are yours to explore, experience and fall in love with during your stay. Coast to coast, border to border, there are seemingly endless variations on your French experience to be had. Rolling hills and scenic valleys lined with the fruit of the gods; seaside towns, along sandy beaches with views you just might be sharing with royalty; or maybe snowcapped mountain ranges providing some of the best skiing in the world and an adrenaline rush to match is what you seek. Whatever you decide, France easily makes you feel as if you have stepped out of reality and into the art you learned about and loved since you were a child.

This European paradise is often referred to as the land of a thousand islands. Located on the east bank of the Adriatic Sea across from Italy, some say that a trip to Croatia is to experience “the Mediterranean as it once was.” It is a natural and historic setting for the many activities and cultural experiences that lie ahead. The art of wellness is practiced along its shores – be sure to indulge in a heavenly spa treatment.

From the coasts of the Mediterranean to the top of Mount Olympus, Greece is a place grand enough for mythical gods and friendly enough for travelers alike. Uncover its ancient ruins and relics and take in an iconic landscape of whitewashed homes. This is only the beginning of the endless wonders you’ll find when you first set foot on Greek soil.

A gem of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal is a paradise. On the coasts, sun-soaked beaches meet breathtaking hillside towns all down the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. In the cities, ancient structures rise up shoulder-to-shoulder with modern living. Everywhere you turn, you can find mouth-watering food paired with delicious local wines, medieval architecture paired with Moorish artistic influence, and friendly locals paired with charming attitudes. No matter what you seek, when you go, where you look, or how long you stay, Portugal offers something for every traveler.

At the heart of Europe, monumental contemporary and historic events shape today’s Germany. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the rise of the Beatles in Hamburg, the culture of the country is marked by its influential past and present. Imagine yourself exploring postcard-worthy castles such as Neuschwanstein or wandering through medieval cities such as Regensburg. From the Bavarian Alps to the Rhine Gorge to the plains of the north, the range of Germany’s landscapes will capture your heart. Perhaps you’ll also indulge your taste buds as you sample the delicious Marzipan sweet treats of the Hanseatic port of Lubeck, which have been produced there for over 200 years. Whether on a journey on the ‘Romantic Road’ or cruising along the Rhine, know that a stein of German beer or a glass of wine from the Rhine vineyards are both a worthy compliment to a destination that offers far more than the average traveler anticipates.

Switzerland

Incredible skiing on the Swiss Alps and delectable Swiss chocolate are only two reasons for visiting Switzerland. Located between Austria, France, Germany and Italy, you can get quite a diverse European cultural experience depending on which region of Switzerland you choose. And though the food, music, art and people themselves are very much influenced by their European neighbors, they are all still uniquely Swiss. You will leave with plenty of memories to savor for a lifetime.

This is a briskly paced tou r . Tour pacing considers how often you’ll switch hotels, what you’ll do each day, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • One 1-night stay
  • Most days full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
  • All transportation by motor coach
  • Daily bus time varies and can be lengthy

Walking, Terrain & Physical Considerations

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 2-3 miles per day on city streets, cobblestones, stairs, and hills.
  • Stone pathways and cobblestone streets can become slick when wet.
  • Travelers should be prepared to encounter a significant number of steps and stairs in the Cinque Terre villages.
  • The terrain around the Roman Forum and the Colosseum includes inclines and uneven stairs.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on tour.

Climate Considerations

  • In the summer months, June-September, travelers can expect high temperatures from 70 F - 80 F and lows from 50 F - 60 F with occasional extreme heatwaves.

Physical Activity & Tour Pacing Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage-handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The group can’t miss any activities because of an individual’s needs.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, wheelchairs and walkers will be difficult to use and aren’t recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring any mobility aids with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pace questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team.
  • Private motor coaches use steps for boarding, and often don’t provide ramps or lifts.
  • This tour utilizes various modes of transportation, including trains, boat, and private motor coach. To board some of them, you may have to climb raised platforms or steps.
  • Train rides and boat rides in Cinque Terre are included in the price of your tour.
  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
  • You must be able to manage your own luggage while on tour, as porterage isn’t guaranteed. This includes when arriving at hotels or airports and boarding trains or ferries.
  • Luggage storage on trains is extremely limited, and often requires travelers to lift their suitcases onto racks—sometimes located above their seats.
  • You should be prepared to manage your bags during ferry transfers. This includes carrying them up and down boarding ramps, lifting them onto racks, and navigating spaces crowded with other people and motor vehicles.
  • Elevators in hotels aren’t guaranteed.
  • Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets, so our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one carry-on bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotels and airports.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
  • We recommend packing a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastic waste.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • In case of emergencies, we also recommend packing your medical insurance card in your carry-on.
  • Go Ahead handpicks every hotel you’ll stay at, striking a balance between comfort, location, and local charm.
  • Specific properties will vary based on your departure date, but are typically three-to-four-star hotels; always include private bathrooms; and usually have in-room safes for valuables. Additionally, your hotels will have Wi-Fi, but access may be limited to common areas. There may also not be elevators.
  • Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that your accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with your hotels once they’ve been confirmed, about 30 days prior to departure.
  • Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets; as such, our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
  • Please be advised that the strength of the air conditioning in European hotels/buildings is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada.
  • Spain and France operate on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C, E, or F plugs with two small, round pins.
  • Italy operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and uses Types C, F, or L plugs with two or three small, round pins.
  • Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
  • Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.
  • We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
  • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website at cdc.gov .
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • Most of our itineraries include headsets used during certain sightseeing tours so travelers can hear their guides or Tour Director. If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please visit our Help Center for more information or contact our customer experience team. Please note that at this time not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
  • The water is safe to drink throughout your tour unless posted otherwise.
  • This tour includes three dinners: They may be set menus, buffets, or family-style meals, depending on the location. Dinners also include one glass of beer, wine, or a soft drink, as well as water, coffee, and tea.
  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • In Spain, breakfast like a local with just a pastry and coffee. Then, tuck into a three-course lunch featuring a Spanish staple like savory seafood paella or grilled meat and fried potatoes. Dinner is less hearty than lunch and is served late, between 9pm and midnight. Snack on small plates called tapas any time of day.
  • Catalan cuisine, which can be found in Barcelona, is markedly different from food in other parts of Spain. Nearly every restaurant will offer pa amb tomàquet—toasted bread with tomato and olive oil. Fresh seafood, hearty meat dishes, cheeses, and locally grown vegetables, such as wild mushrooms, are culinary mainstays.
  • For a picnic with French flair, stop at a small grocery store for cheeses, pâtés, cured meats, fresh-baked bread, and fruit. In the cities, sidewalk vendors are known for their steaming crepes, while mouthwatering pastries and hot café au lait beckon from cafes. In restaurants, the prix fixe option is a popular way to enjoy a set three- or four-course menu for a good price.
  • Although lunch is generally served from noon until 2pm in France, dinner is served from 7:30pm onward. Those wishing to eat earlier can stop at a cafe, where light entrées and sandwiches are available throughout the afternoon and evening.
  • On the Italian Riviera, a taste of the region's famous basil pesto is a must. Delicious seafood dishes are popular along the shore, but true Ligurians favor simple, traditional recipes like minestrone soup and farinata, an unleavened chickpea pancake.
  • Tuscany is world-famous for its wine, oil, sauces, and pasta. Menus favor subtle, lighter pastas and desserts made with nuts, fruit, and honey. Try a dish featuring the region’s Chianina beef, perhaps the most prized breed of cattle in all of Italy. For wine, popular Tuscan reds include Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which are primarily made from the Sangiovese grape. Well-known white wines are also made around the San Gimignano region.
  • For more authentic meals, try local trattorias, small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello.
  • Roman food, on the tour extension, is typically freshly prepared and varies depending on the season. Must-try bites include cacio e pepe (a simple dish of pasta, cheese and pepper) and supplí (a fried rice ball similar to Sicily's arancini).
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10-$12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the euro on tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To help you feel prepared before going on tour, we strongly recommend downloading the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. It’s free and provides information about important deadlines and entry requirements, as well as your detailed itinerary, packing tips, and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the app’s chat feature.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There’s no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will lead your group. Their role is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each day’s activities, and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and can’t provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is having access to our 24/7 Emergency Support Team.
  • Our extensive network of global offices and our integration of ISO 31000 Risk Management Guidelines help this dedicated team anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible, iterative way.
  • Using a combination of extensive training, thorough incident response planning, and decades of experience, this team assists travelers and Tour Directors in case of emergencies—stepping in for everything from personal health concerns and injuries to major world events.
  • Our On-Tour Support team can also provide additional help to travelers on tour, arranging assistance from outside specialists and liaising with local and international authorities as needed. And if there’s an emergency on the road or at home, the team will facilitate and support communication between travelers and their families.
  • Spain, France, and Italy are one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
  • When you travel with Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormous socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • Go Ahead Tours encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.

If you are interested in visiting any of Florence's many museums during your free time, we recommend that you make reservations in advance. See  uffizi.org  for the Uffizi Gallery or  accademia.org  for the Accademia Gallery. Please note that the museums are closed on Mondays.

Enjoy afternoon tea in London

Sample over 300-years of history in the simplicity of homemade scones with whipped cream and jam. This deliciously British treat is best enjoyed in the afternoon, complete with a hot cup of Earl Grey, cucumber sandwiches and a tower of sugary delights.

Explore ancient Athens

You don't need to be a historian to appreciate the significance of Athens. Your love affair with the city might begin with goddess Athena’s Parthenon temple and the ruins of Acropolis, but it’s likely to end in a quaint alleyway getting a glimpse at daily life in this ancient capital. The story of Athens continues to unfold.

Catch a flamenco show in Spain

Discover the soul-stirring emotion of a Flamenco show in Spain. This expressive art-form has an intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO, merging song, dance and musical instruments into a performance that has to be experienced at least once. Finish with dinner of paella or tapas to round off your perfect evening.

View the Northern Lights in Iceland

Mother Nature’s wonders come to life with the Aurora Borealis or ‘Northern Lights’. In the frosty landscapes of Iceland, this light display offers viewers a genuine pinch-me moment as vivid colours dance across the night sky.

Spend a night at the opera in Vienna

Hear the talents of traditional opera with the ghosts of Mozart and Strauss in your presence. Though there are more than few places to catch the opera in Vienna, none can compare to the State Opera House (Staatsoper).

Our top 5 things to do in Europe & Britain

There are endless pinch-me moments to be found across the many countries that make up our Europe travel packages. But where to even begin? Perhaps a Flamenco show in Spain, afternoon tea in London or a Northern Lights viewing in frosty Iceland? Here are some of the highlights of our Europe and Britain trips that you're sure to love.

Paris, France

The world’s largest gallery and the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Louvre is without rival in the art world and is a must see when in Paris. Allow an entire day to explore its eight departments, not missing the Egyptian antiquities, Islamic art and various halls of sculptures. End your day with sunset by the Louvre Pyramid.

London, England

The British Museum

With some eight million works within its permanent collection, The British Museum is an illustrious European landmark. Admire objects brought back from the voyages of Captain James Cook and walk in the controversial presence of the Parthenon Marbles.

Florence, Italy

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters can be found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo fill Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River reveal the building’s architectural brilliance.

Best museums in Europe & Britain

When traveling Europe with Trafalgar, museum hopping is one of the best ways to understand the culture and history of the places you visit. You’ll find yourself critiquing ancient art and staring in awe at some of the world’s most prominent works. Here are some of our favorites.

Paella Valenciana

Saffron, snails, butterbeans and bomba rice are just some of the ingredients you might find in traditional Spanish paella. Despite originating from the coastal town of Valencia, Paella Valenciana is a variety without seafood. You'll love sitting back to enjoy a steaming plate over the sounds of Spanish jazz in a lively alfresco restaurant.

Beef Stroganoff

Now a staple dish in many parts of the world, beef stroganoff is best enjoyed in its birthplace in Russia with a vodka in hand. This simple dish of beef strips sauteed in a sour cream sauce offers a heart-warming taste of this country’s culinary heritage.

Bouillabaisse

The Mediterranean city of Marseille is where a French culinary icon can be found and devoured. The fragrant stew of bouillabaisse, commonly served with crusty white bread, boils up the finest local seafood and seasonal vegetables with the flavors of fennel, saffron and cayenne pepper.

Best food in Europe & Britain

Our trips to Europe gravitate around indulgent local mealtimes. With new cuisines and cooking methodologies found at every turn, this continent is simply delicious.

What to pack for a tour in Europe

People packing for a tour

With such a large expanse of space to explore on a European travel tour, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about European history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A good book

Exploring Europe is best done at a relaxed pace with ample opportunity to absorb your surroundings. Dedicate a few days to sitting in a park or a cafe, alternating between reading and watching the world go by.

Versatile shoes

Within the space of one outing you may experience all kinds of terrain when in Europe. Pack shoes that can see you walking from an elegant restaurant to a cobbled footpath, with a stroll along the soft grass of a park in between.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Europe, you may find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to share recommendations with friends when you return home.

All climate clothing

No matter the time of year you travel, Europe can deliver a myriad of temperatures. From frosty cities of Scandinavia to the temperate hills of Portugal, layered clothing best suits the varying micro-climates across this continent.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Discover peaceful hotels surrounded by lush vineyards in Provence, Bordeaux, and Champagne, along with regions of Italy, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Austria, and Hungary

Travel Sustainability Editor's Pick Wine Hotels

south europe tour

Where there's travel, there's food and wine. Across Europe, wine tourism remains one of the best ways to discover a country or a region. The good news is that these 27 châteaux and estates are home to comfortable hotels nestled in the immediate vicinity of the vineyards. Put them at the top of your 'must-visit' list to enjoy bucolic strolls, wine tastings, and relaxing spas!

Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa

Grand Est:  Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa

On the outskirts of the town of Epernay, welcome to one of the jewels in the crown of northeastern France's hotel industry, which was recently awarded Three MICHELIN Keys . The original building, a 19th Century coaching inn, has been renovated and extended with a modern wing, all overlooking a valley renowned for its grape varieties. The rooms and suites are modern in style, while retaining the period charm of the place; each one offers an individualized décor, but they all share the fabulous view of the vineyards. Don't miss the hotel's spa or its MICHELIN-Starred restaurant, Le Royal .

Les Sources de Caudalie

Nouvelle-Aquitaine:  Les Sources de Caudalie

An elegant hotel and spa set on the site of a thermal spring. This description alone is enough to convince us of the merits of Les Sources de Caudalie, but it's its second special feature that has us spellbound: the hotel is located on the grounds of Château Smith Haut-Lafitte, just a few minutes from Bordeaux. 'Vinotherapy' is the order of the day, with the option to receive wine-based relaxation in the Caudalie spa or served by the glass. The hotel's Two Star restaurant  features local Aquitaine produce and wines, particularly those from Pessac-Léognan; and for those wishing to rediscover the atmosphere of the inns of yesteryear, head for La Table du Lavoir , set up under the wooden covered market hall. Book Les Sources de Caudalie with The MICHELIN Guide →

Hotel de Pavie

Nouvelle-Aquitaine:  Hotel de Pavie

Ideally located in the heart of the village of Saint-Émilion , this hotel (recently awarded a MICHELIN Key) belongs to the Perse family, who also own Château Pavie, the legendary Premier Grand Cru Classé 'A' estate! Its terrace, leaning against the famous bell tower, offers exceptional panoramic views; it's impossible to get enough of the mosaic of roofs and vineyards as far as the eye can see. The main building (a former convent) houses most of the hotel's rooms and suites, as well as La Table de Pavie , a recently refurbished Two Star restaurant run by Yannick Alléno. Some suites, such as the Pétrus, feature a private terrace with lawn. You can also stay in the annex on the other side of the garden or, since 2022, in one of the five contemporary suites housed inside an 18th Century house in the village itself.

Book Hotel de Pavie with The MICHELIN Guide →

Château Lafaurie Peyraguey

Nouvelle-Aquitaine:  Château Lafaurie Peyraguey

Two MICHELIN Keys have been awarded to this sublime setting, the fruit of a collaboration between Lalique, the venerable glassmaker, and Lafaurie-Peyraguey, the Sauternes wine estate. With 400 years of history behind it, its interiors have been extensively renovated. Each with its own unique design, the 13 suites are bathed in comfort; you'll even be asked whether you prefer a firm or memory foam mattress. Plenty of praise should be reserved for the hotel's Two MICHELIN Star restaurant Lalique , whose inventive menu is tailor-made to suit the sweetness of Sauternes. The cellar, of course, is of exceptional quality; it holds over a third of a million bottles, including but not limited to Sauternes, and notably an 1895 vintage from the neighboring Yquem vineyard.

Book Château Lafaurie Peyraguey with The MICHELIN Guide →

La Maison d'Estournel

Nouvelle-Aquitaine:  La Maison d'Estournel

La Maison d'Estournel was awarded One MICHELIN Key in 2024, and for good reason: this luxury establishment is nestled within a superb vineyard, the Cos d'Estournel estate, a Saint-Estèphe Grand Cru Classé. Halfway between Bordeaux and the sea, along the Gironde estuary, this imposing 18th Century mansion boasts classic period architecture, but surprises with the singular personality of its interiors, starting with the Indian antiques left by its first owner.
The rooms bear the hallmark of contemporary luxury and were designed by Alex Michaelis, famous for his work at Soho House. As the 'Maison' remains a home, there are only 14 rooms and suites.
Wine tastings are organized in the building's superb vaulted cellar.

Book La Maison d'Estournel with The MICHELIN Guide →

Hôtel Villa La Coste

Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur:  Villa La Coste

Recently awarded The MICHELIN Guide's most prestigious hotel distinction (Three Keys), this gem, located just 20 minutes from Aix-en-Provence, stretches over 200 hectares. Designed by Frank Gehry, Oscar Niemeyer, Tadao Ando, and Jean Nouvel, this aesthetes' paradise boasts 30 monumental open-air art installations featuring the 'crème de la crème' of international artists (Ai Weiwei, Louise Bourgeois, Sophie Calle...). There are 28 suites, each more impressive than the last, including ten with private pools and all set into the hillsides with breathtaking panoramic views of Mont Ventoux. Château La Coste's attention remains on (organic) wine, producing both whites and reds, plus a special focus on rosés. Bonuses include wine-tasting workshops, an 800 square meter spa, and several restaurants including the One MICHELIN Star  Hélène Darroze à Villa La Coste .

Book Villa La Coste with The MICHELIN Guide →

Domaine des Andeols

Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur:  Domaine des Andeols

This 32-hectare estate is situated in the Vaucluse region and is home to eight suites plus 11 independent, intimate, and secluded houses. Each one is uniquely decorated, together housing a magnificent collection of artworks and furniture created by leading designers. Some villas have terraces offering unparalleled views of the Luberon, and two even have their own swimming pools. The grounds also boast, among other things, a restaurant, a centuries-old plane tree, a terrace, a palm grove, ponds, a vegetable garden, olive trees, and vines... all of which explains why Domaine des Andeols has been awarded One MICHELIN Key.

Book Domaine des Andeols with The MICHELIN Guide →

La Bastide de Marie

Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur:  La Bastide de Marie

La Bastide de Marie avoids the typical 'authentic Provençal' line, and is so much the better for resurrecting in its own way the famous but forgotten genre of farmhouses. La Bastide is contemporary and sophisticated, and fully embraces the spirit of the region, its traditions, and surrounding nature. Book La Bastide de Marie with The MICHELIN Guide →

Château & Village Castigno

Occitanie:  Château & Village Castigno

Château Castigno is first and foremost an organic producer of Saint-Chinian wines, located in the village of Assignan in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. But it's also an atypical hotel, recently awarded a MICHELIN Key . Its rooms and communal areas are not concentrated in a single structure, but spread throughout the village, in colorful houses and buildings, to stand out from the more recent private dwellings. Some, like the independent, upscale Villa Rouge, include several bedrooms, a kitchen, and a garden with private pool. What's more? A spa, yoga classes, vineyard, and tours of their winery, a spectacular building in the shape of a Castigno bottle! In addition, the hotel boasts several restaurants, also scattered throughout the village, including the One MICHELIN Star La Table de Castigno .

Book Château & Village Castigno with The Guide MICHELIN Guide →

Conti di San Bonifacio

Tuscany:  Conti di San Bonifacio

We couldn't have avoided a stopover in Tuscany. And with good reason: among its many riches, Conti di San Bonifacio is renowned for its elegance and intimacy, thanks to its limited size. The view over the gentle, vine-covered hills and olive groves that surround it is the stuff of Tuscan dreams.

Book Conti di San Bonifacio with The MICHELIN Guide →

L'Andana

Tuscany:  L'Andana

This hotel occupies the enchanting Tenuta La Badiola estate on the Tyrrhenian coast. Formerly the summer residence of Grand Duke Leopold II, it offers the sense of isolation so dear to those seeking a little escape from everyday life. But it's also close to such famous places as Siena, Lucca, and the splendid Maremma coast, where you can easily spend a day lounging. Awarded a MICHELIN Key, this exceptional location overlooks hills planted with vineyards and olive groves. The interiors of the rooms and suites around the villa and adjoining farmhouse were designed by Ettore Mochetti, Editor-In-Chief of Italy's Architectural Digest. There are also two Italian restaurants, a luxurious ESPA spa, an outdoor swimming pool, and over 40 hectares of greenery to explore at your leisure!

Book L'Andana with The MICHELIN Guide →

Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco

Tuscany:  Rosewood Castiglion Del Bosco

90 minutes' drive from Florence, 2 hours from Pisa, and 2.5 hours from Rome, discover a picture-postcard of valleys, vineyards, and olive groves. In the midst of this verdant setting, the hotel itself is but a pip in a bunch of grapes. But what a pip! This Three MICHELIN Key hotel boasts some 20 sumptuous suites, housed in a dozen restored 17th and 18th Century villas. Private terraces with their picturesque, unobstructed views over the vineyards are joined by an organic vegetable garden supplying the elegant Campo del Drago , which holds One MICHELIN Star. A magnificent infinity pool and a spa by Daniela Steiner enhance the overall package. Season after season, Castiglion Del Bosco closes itself off a little more to the public, to become a kind of private club, accessible first and foremost to its members. So hurry up and get your membership card!

Book Rosewood Castiglion Del Bosco with The MICHELIN Guide →

Il Borro

Tuscany:  Il Borro

A renowned vineyard of over 40 hectares, vast olive groves pierced by cypress and oak trees, three villas, three sumptuous old farmhouses... and to top it all off, a fully restored medieval village! Bought back in 1993, the sprawling San Giustino Valdarno estate also boasts tennis courts, a golf course, and a soccer pitch. It would be tempting to review each of the villas, with their own swimming pools, private gardens, and terraces; but for lack of space, let's concentrate instead on Il Borro, erected at the center of the estate. Built by a prince in 1848, the building is surrounded by a traditional Italian garden, to which are added a heated swimming pool, fitness room, Turkish bath, sauna, billiards table, and a breathtaking view of the medieval village. Book Il Borro with The MICHELIN Guide →

Filodivino Wine Resort & Spa

March:  Filodivino Wine Resort & Spa

In the collective imagination, Italian wines are often associated with Tuscany, but this is clearly not the only Italian region where vines are grown. Situated on the Adriatic coast, the Marche region is also famous for its vineyards, hilly landscapes, mild climate, and wine hotels such as the Filodivino, a magnificent illustration of the secrets of a certain Italian 'art de vivre'.

Book Filodivino Wine Resort & Spa with The MICHELIN Guide →

La Foresteria Planeta Estate

Located in the far west of Sicily, not far from the town of Menfi, this contemporary 14-room luxury hotel overlooks the region's vineyards and olive groves. And the advantage of staying in a hotel owned by a winegrowing family is that you can enjoy cooking classes and wine tastings.

Book La Foresteria Planeta Estate with The MICHELIN Guide →

Monaci delle Terre Nere

Sicily:  Monaci delle Terre Nere

While many Sicilian hotels boast breathtaking views of Mount Etna, few can rival this eight-room boutique hotel on the volcano's eastern slope. Set amid 15 hectares of vineyards and olive groves, in the stonework of a former monastery dating from the late 18th Century, this establishment (recently awarded a MICHELIN Key) offers several types of accommodation: standard rooms (parquet flooring, luxury bedding, sea view), suites (fireplace, Jacuzzi), and outbuildings (havens of luxury located 200 meters from the main house). The property's gardens provide organic produce for its restaurant, which also boasts an adjoining terrace. Sicilian cooking classes and Etna wine tastings are available too.

Book Monaci delle Terre Nere with The MICHELIN Guide →

Six Senses Douro Valley

From the moment you set eyes on the place, you get an idea of what an incredibly luxurious experience Six Senses has in store for you. Located in Portugal, the Douro Valley is a wine-growing region with sumptuous landscapes thanks to its terraced vineyards. While it's best known for its port wine, as you'll soon learn during a private tour of the hotel's cellar, there's much more to Douro Valley wines than just its emblematic nectar.

In the distance, from some suites, you can see the emblematic medieval castle of Evora perched proudly on its hill.

Alentejo:  São Lourenço do Barrocal

Set in Portugal's spectacular Alentejo countryside, this 200-year-old farming estate extends over 810 hectares. Barns, outbuildings, and even an old olive press have been transformed into hotel rooms, suites, cottages, and a spa! Modern comforts in the rooms include heated bathroom floors, Nespresso machines, Marshall Bluetooth audio systems, and USB sockets. It's a good idea from the hotel for kids to have their own pool, separate from the 20-meter-long adult pool. There are two restaurants, one focusing on local culinary traditions, and the other located outside by the pool and gardens. The estate's own horses are available for rides.

Its titanium shell sparkles alongside the original 19th Century buildings; the interiors are at the cutting edge of contemporary luxury; and the rooms have huge windows leaning outwards. Add to this: a Caudalie vinotherapy spa, complete with indoor pool and large fitness center; a One MICHELIN Star restaurant offering molecular gastronomy; and unlimited access to the Marquès de Riscal grands crus on wine tours. Altogether, it's quite the package. Book Hotel Marques de Risca with The MICHELIN Guide →

Protected on one side by the Odenwald mountains and the Black Forest, and on the other by the Vosges mountains, it has the warmest, sunniest climate in Germany, with almost Mediterranean temperatures. Add to this the region's remarkable terroirs, numerous small vineyards, and historic towns (Baden-Baden, Freiburg im Breisgau), and you've got a wine-lover's delight! Overlooking its own vineyards, just outside the picturesque village of Gernsbach, the historic Schloss Eberstein castle has been transformed into a romantic hotel. Most rooms at the Hotel Ritter Durbach are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, whirlpool baths, and bathrobes... all the comforts of the most luxurious home. Less than 5 minutes' walk away is the Graflich Wolff Metternich'sches Weingut wine estate. There's also the Durbacher Wine and Local History Museum, where you can learn all about local wines. You can also rent vintage cars from the hotel to drive from vineyard to vineyard.

Burg & Gästehaus by Schwarzenstein

Rheingau:  Burg & Gästehaus by Schwarzenstein

The Rheingauer-Riesling wine route runs along the right bank of the Rhine from Lorch to Hochheim. Famous for its vineyards historically established by the Benedictine and Cistercian orders, the Rheingau region is an ideal terroir for pure, piquant white wines. The autumn mists rising from the river favor botrytis, the noble rot that is the signature of great rieslings. In fact, it's here that the late harvest is said to have been invented. The variety of soils in the region also proves very interesting for viticulture: quartz and slate in the hills, or silt, loess, and clay in the valley. Nestled within all of this is the small town of Geisenheim, where a historic castle has been converted into this luxury hotel. Its enchanting rooms and suites offer lovely panoramic views, as does its restaurant; you can even enjoy your meals on the terrace overlooking the surrounding vineyards.

Minaro Hotel Tokaj MGallery

Tokaj:  Minaro Hotel Tokaj

Nestled in the volcanic foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, this hotel is the ideal gateway to the Tokaj wine region, which has been producing some of Hungary's (and the world's) finest wines for over a thousand years. Each room or suite has a balcony with a panoramic view of this fabulous UNESCO World Heritage site. The staff know the area inside out, and will be delighted to guide you. Don't miss Tokaj Aszú, a favorite of King Louis XIV, who served it at Versailles, nicknaming it “The king of wines, the wine of kings”. Rich in sugars, aromas, and acids, the berries known as “Aszú” (“dried” in Hungarian) come from grapes affected by botrytis (noble rot). Harvested grape by grape and sorted successively, they reveal extraordinary flavors in every sip. The hotel also features a vast spa with a heated indoor pool, several outdoor pools, a Jacuzzi, and a sauna. Book Minaro Hotel Tokaj with The MICHELIN Guide →

MALAT Weingut und Hotel

Wachau:  MALAT Weingut und Hotel

On the south bank of the Danube, this modern hotel, built entirely of local wood and stone, is an extension of the family winery founded in 1722. Overlooking the vineyards and the 11th Century Göttweig Abbey, the rooms face due south. Spacious and bathed in natural light, they feature contemporary décor; and the split-level suites sport parquet flooring, a separate living room and bedroom, a private patio, and large picture windows overlooking the green hills. They're the perfect vantage point from which to enjoy the estate's refined, bright, and fresh white wines! Good to know: numerous restaurants and wine bars, as well as hiking and cycling trails, are nearby. The Längenfeld golf course can be reached in just 5 minutes.
