THINGS TO DO IN BACOLOD
1.experience masskara festival, why is it one of the top things to do in bacolod.
Masskara Festival, the festival of smiles, is one of the biggest festivals in the Philippines, held every October in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. The term “Masskara” was coined from the words “mass” (crowd) and “kara” (face), which literally means “Festival of Many Faces”. During the celebration, Bacolod exude an enchanted atmosphere as masked dancers fill the streets, dancing to the tunes of live music, and many events are organized in the city.
Interestingly, Masskara Festival was founded sometime in 1980 and was first held back in October 19, 1980 to help ease the misery of the locals. A tragedy struck in the evening of April 22, 1980 when M/S Don Juan, a ferry carrying about 1,000 passengers, most of them are Negrense, collided with M/T Tacloban City tanker en route to Bacolod from Manila. The ferry instantly sunk off shore Mindoro, killing about 750 passengers.
2. FEAST ON CHICKEN INASAL
Why is it one of the best things to do in bacolod.
Mention Bacolod food and chicken inasal (grilled chicken) will come to mind. Chicken inasal is Bacolod’s most famous local delicacy known for its smoky taste and yellowish look. There are several eateries and restaurants in Bacolod serving chicken inasal , but the best place to go is Manokan Country . It is said that back in the 80’s, the inasal food stalls where just scattered on the sidewalks, until the local government brought them organized them to create what is known as Manokan Country. You can choose from several restaurants serving chicken inasal here.
3. RELAX AT THE CAPITOL BUILDING AND LAGOON
Why is it one of the top bacolod tourist spots.
Built in 1927 and completed 6 years after, the Capitol Building in Bacolod, which is the official seat of the governor of the province, exhibits the Beaux-Arts architectural design that is inspired by French Neocolonialism. Based on anecdotes ,the city planner Daniel Burnham, one of the celebrated American architects who studied in Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris visited the Philippines upon the invitation of the then Governor General William Cameron Forbes to visit the Philippines. He recommended William Parsons as consulting architect, who structured the architectural office of the Bureau of Public Works, composed of American and Filipino architects including Juan Nakpil, Tomas Bautista Mapua, and Juan de Guzman Arellano who implemented the plan. The Capitol Building was declared as National Historical Landmark in 1994.
The Capitol Building is shaped like the letter E, and the neck-swivelling façade is fringed by towering, massive colonnades. The sculptures at the Capitol Building are believed to be designed by the works of Guillermo Tolentino, the National Artist for Sculpture.
Near the man-made lagoon at the Capitol Grounds, you’ll notice striking statues painted in gold. The carabao (water buffalo) and a woman is attributed to Italian sculpture Frances Riccardo Monti, while the man riding a female carabao was made by Negrense artist Felix Garzon.
There’s also a memorial for the war veterans at the heart of the Capitol Ground.
4. VISIT SAN SEBASTIAN CHURCH
Why is a famous bacolod tourist spot.
The San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod city was originally constructed in 1825 and was renovated towards the end of the century. The 2 bell towers (the original wooden church has 1 bell tower only) were built in 1885 and eventually the bells were relocated to the churchyard for the preservation. In 1933, San Sebastian Church was declared a cathedral when Bacolod was converted into a diocese.
5.TRY CANSI
Why is it one of the best Bacolod food?
Another must-try Negrense dish that you can find in Bacolod is the cansi (kansi), a traditional comfort food made of boiled bone-in beef shank with beef chunks and bone marrow and made sour by batuan fruit. The best place to eat cansi in Bacolod is at Sharyn’s Cansi House that is included in the World’s Top 50 Street Food Masters chosen by panel of industry experts during the World Street Food Congress (WSFC). The last time I ate here, the cansi served to me is good for 2-3 persons, about ₱290 ($6) if I remember it correctly.

BACOLOD SIDE TRIPS
Here’s a list of top tourist spots in Negros Occidental that can be done as a day trip from Bacolod city.
12. THE RUINS
Why is it one of the top places to see near bacolod.
Mention Bacolod and The Ruins will immediately come to mind. But this famous attraction is actually located in Talisay, not Bacolod.
Based on anecdotes, The Ruins was built as a reminder of great love. Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, a sugar baron from Talisay, Negros Occidental fell in love with Maria Braga, a Portuguese from Macau. They eventually got married, settled in Negros, and had 10 children. When Maria got pregnant with her 11 th child, she slipped in their bathroom and bled heavily. She couldn’t stand to go to the physician, so his husband had to request for a physician who lives in Silay. It took 4 days for the physician to arrive by horse-drawn carriage and sadly, Maria and the child already passed away. Mariano was broken-hearted, he then decided to build an Italian-inspired mansion dedicated to his wife. Unfortunately, during the World War II, the guerillas burned down the beautiful mansion to prevent the Japanese soldiers from using it as a military headquarters. The frame of the mansion survived, hence the name, like a testament of one great love that stood the test of time.

One of the popular resorts near Bacolod is Campuestuhan Highland Resort, situated in Talisay, Negros Occidental. This sprawling family-friendly resort was originally planned as a retirement home of Ricardo and Nina Tan, but upon seeing the majestic view surrounding it, they changed the plan to what is now known as Campuestuhan Highland Resort. Aside from the swimming, the resort also offers various activities like zipline, hamster wheel, sky bicycle, rope course, and even horseback riding. Kids will also enjoy Campuestuhan Highland Resort because of the life-size statues of superheroes here such as Batman, Icredible Hulk, Thor, and Superman.

Mambukal Resort is a timeless nature resort covering roughly 23.6 hectares of land at the foot of the mighty Mt.Kanlaon in Murcia, Negros Occidental. It is the gateway to Mt.Kanlaon via the Wasay Trail.
Interestingly, Mambukal Resort was originally conceptualized by Kokichi Paul Ishawata, a Japanese architect, in 1927. This is why this place houses a Japanese-inspired bath house and a picnic garden.
Mambukal Resort is sprinkled with nature springs, jungle-clad mountains, and waterfalls. The resort may seem old and forgotten, but once you take a leisurely walk around its surroundings, you’ll most likely appreciate the forest surrounding it.
If you are adventurous enough, you can hike the 7 waterfalls inside the confines of Mambukal Resort. But if you have limited time like us, you can rent a motorbike (with driver) to the jumping off point if the 1st and 2 nd waterfall. If I remember it correctly I think I paid ₱50 one way. Then at the start of the trail, you can hire a guide for your security and to avoid getting lost. It’s an easy hike to reach the 1 st waterfall from the jumping off point, you can also do the 2 nd waterfall in Mambukal Resort.

Silay City in Negros Occidental has a timeless appeal, once dubbed as the “Paris of Negros”, it takes pride as one of the largest sugar producers in the Philippines. But what draws tourists here are the more or less 30 well-preserved age-old houses built during the Spanish colonial period declared as official heritage landmarks by the National Historical Commission.

19.CHURCH OF THE ANGRY CHRIST
Situated in Victorias City in Negros Occidental, the St. Joseph the Worker Chapel (Church of the Angry Christ) features unique artistry and imagery of Jesus and the saints. Constructed 5 years after the World War II, it is hailed an Important Cultural Property of the Philippines. The structural design of this distinctive church was created by Czech architect Antonin Raymond, who made sure that the building can withstand earthquakes.
The Church of the Angry Christ is owned by the wealthy sugar baron family – Osssorio Family, that is why it is sitting inside the confines of a sugar milling complex. What makes this church unique is the depiction of Jesus Christ, instead of showing a compassionate image, he is shown here as angry. The rare mural was created by a Filipino born-artist Alfonso Ossorio, known for his surrealist works.
Meanwhile, the beautiful mosaics inside the church are made by Belgian Adelaide de Bethune. The brass plates in the pulpit and the baptistry designed by Bethune was made by Arcadio Anore. The Filipino-looking wooden sculptures of saints, Mary and Joseph, and the images of the Stations of the Cross were created by Benjamin Valenciano. Interestingly, the brown skin of the Filipinized version of the religious themes were made of glass from beer bottles.
How to get to the Angry Christ Church:
1.From Bacolod City, ride a bus to Manapla.
2.Alight at Victorias Milling Company in Victorias City.
3.Take a tricycle to the Saint Joseph Church inside the Victorias Milling Company.
P.S. Apologies, my old hard drive where the photos of the church is stored is defective so I can’t show you how it looks. But the church is worth checking.
Sipalay was once a local secret, but it’s slowly getting the attention that it deserves. Getting here may be more than the adventure you bargained for, but it’s well worth it. Sipalay is sprinkled with gorgeous forest-fringed islets that beckon repeat visits. For further details, do read my Sipalay blog through the link below.

On Monday, Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez and Maj. Gen. Elpidio Talja, commander of the Philippine Air Force Reserve Command, led the signing of the memorandum of agreement (MOA) in a ceremony held at Bacolod City Government Center in the presence of Senator Francis Tolentino, honorary chairperson of the Games’ Executive Organizing Committee.
“Bacolod is very pleased and happy to be the host for this year’s ROTC Games. We look forward to such a momentous occasion to be held in Bacolod. This would be good, significant for us, moving forward in terms of sports activities, and will also add to our tourism events,” Benitez said.
Talja thanked the city government for agreeing to host the Visayas Regional Qualifying Leg.
“I’m grateful to the local government unit of Bacolod. We are really looking forward to a very successful conduct of the ROTC Games,” he said.
Tolentino acknowledged the hospitality of Bacolod, whom he considers “one of the friendliest cities in the Philippines” in preparing for the Visayas Regional Qualifying Leg.
The sports event expects to gather in the city more than 3,000 participants from Western Visayas, Central Visayas, and Eastern Visayas.
“Bacolod City is where the heartbeat of culture and the rhythm of sports converge. We intend to exemplify that through the ROTC Games Visayas Leg. Our deepest gratitude to Mayor Benitez, the entire city government, and the people of Bacolod,” he added.
Tolentino said the second edition of the ROTC Games will have more competitions, among these the events added by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), such as basketball 5×5, volleyball, and raiders competition.
“The entire technical team of the PSC will be here, including the international referees,” he added.
Student-athletes will compete in arnis, athletics, boxing, chess, e-sports, sepak takraw, taekwondo, table tennis, volleyball, basketball, target shooting, raiders competition, swimming, and the search for Miss ROTC.
“The ROTC Games aims to showcase not just the sportsmanship and the athletic skills of the youth and to highlight ROTC not just as a military training avenue for cadets, but also as a pathway to patriotism. We would want in the near future to have national athletes coming from the ROTC Games,” Tolentino said.

1. The Ruins
Number one on the list and probably the most controversial cultural landmark in Bacolod is The Ruins. It’s kinda like the iconic Taj Mahal of India but with a far more tragic ending. The Ruins Mansion was originally built by Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, an extremely rich Filipino Bachelor in the 1900s who wanted to express his love to Maria Braga. Also known as the Nutsberry Garden, the mansion was then eventually destroyed because Filipino guerillas were against Don Mariano’s decision to harbor some Japanese soldiers during the heights of World War II.

Ultimately, the spectacular mansion was destroyed and burned to the ground. But what’s really amazing is that the pillars and arches of the mansion remained standing, making it a beautiful ancient landmark as of this day.
Indeed, The Ruins is one of the most popular tourist spots in Bacolod because it’s an aesthetic location to take some pictures, have a nice dinner, and just admire the rich history of its past. Especially if you know about the tragic backstory of something this grand and beautiful. CHECK THE BEST HOTELS IN BACOLOD
2. Negros Museum
Of course, your trip to Bacolod wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Negros Museum. It’s the perfect way to know more about the City of Smiles’ rich culture and history. I know, I know. I was intrigued by the name too when I first read it! The iconic Pulang Tubig Falls of Mt. Patag in Silay City, Negros Occidental has been attracting tourists from different parts of the country for many years already. To answer your questions, here are a few origin stories about the controversial name of the waterfalls. Are you ready? Here it goes! One story suggests that the name “Pulang Tubig” or Red Water is said to have come from the blood of Japanese soldiers killed during World War II. Another possible reason is that the red water is said to have been caused by the sulfuric reaction of the river stones along the water bed. Well, no matter what the true story about Pulang Tubig Falls really is, only one thing’s for sure. Its beauty is truly enchanting.

Lakawon island is part of Cadiz City, not Bacolod. It is within Brgy. Cadiz Viejo’s jurisdiction. As a Cadiznon, it’s sad how our city isn’t even mentioned. The island is most definitely not an hour ride away from Bacolod by boat. Bacolod is 2 hours away from Cadiz by bus. Tourists are dropped off at the Martesan station and tricycles are available for them to take to reach the port. Tricycles driven by Cadiznons. The island is maintained by Cadiznons and needs the Cadiz City mayor’s permit to operate.
Before Lakawon island was made into a resort, it was home to Cadiznons. The typhoon Yolanda ravaged the island and forced residents to evacuate. It was no longer safe for them to continue living there. The city government of Cadiz provided a safer location for them to move into. Most of them were fishermen. After clearing the island, a private individual proposed to rent the island and turned it into what it is now.

Top 10 Bacolod Tourist Spots
1. capitol park and lagoon.
(photo via Shutterstock) There’s nothing like a calming stroll along the park after a stressful day at work or at school, and at Capitol Park and Lagoon you get that plus more. Located at the heart of Bacolod City, the complex offers a place for the community to unwind with a jogging trail, an open recreational area, and a man-made lagoon. The Capitol Park complex is also where the Capitol Hall, the provincial library, the Negros Museum, and a few more government buildings are located.
2. The Ruins
The Ruins is one of the most photographed Bacolod tourist spots and for a good reason. This architectural masterpiece is a sight to behold. While the mansion may have been stripped down of its walls after being destroyed by World War II, there’s enough structural frame left as a testament to its former beauty. What makes it even more enthralling is the story behind it. Known as the “Taj Mahal of Negros”, the mansion was built by Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson in memory of his lost love, Maria Braga. Today, what survives of the structure has been turned into a high-class Ilonggo-Spanish restaurant.
3. Lakawon Island
(photo via Facebook, @lakawonisland) Fine white sand, clear blue waters, the biggest floating bar in Asia -- these make up a perfect vacation and all these are found in Lakawon Island. The 16-hectare banana-shaped island has everything the family will enjoy. Water sports activities are plenty in this patch of paradise, while those looking to party can enjoy the biggest floating bar in the continent. It’s a trip for the whole family!
4. Balay Negrense
Established in the 1890s and completed in 1901, Balay Negrense is one of the several Heritage Houses recognized by the National Historical Institute in Negros Occidental. The house was commissioned by Victor Fernandez Gaston, a sugar magnate during the 19th century. After his death in 1927, the house was neglected and abandoned until it was taken in by the Negros Cultural Foundation (in cooperation with the heirs) and transformed into a museum. It now serves as a lifestyle museum in the province, giving guests a peek into the lifestyle of the wealthy during the Spanish colonial era.
5. Bernardino Jalandoni Museum
(photo via Commons, @Hbalairos) Another heritage site in Silay City, the Bernardino Jalandoni Museum houses memorabilia from the Jalandonis that reflect the history of Silaynons. Also known as “Pink House”, the two-story house reflects the typical structure of the iconic Nipa Hut. Parts of the house’s structure have been flown in from Mindoro, while others came from Germany. Memorabilia and antiques from the 19th century are exhibited in the museum, as well as impressive artworks.
6. Balaring Mangrove
Balaring Mangrove is an eco-tourism park that serves as a home to over 20,000 mangroves. Being one of the main sources of food and income among locals, the 50-hectare haven aims to preserve these water submerged trees, as well as to offer protection to marine life and birds found in the area. Aside from the mangroves, this site is also home to the longest bamboo bridge in Visayas, making it a must visit in Bacolod.
7. Negros Museum
(photo via Commons, @SnappyHip) Negros Museum is the first of its kind in the Philippines in that it doesn’t focus on curating artifacts. Instead, this museum located at the heart of Bacolod City features contemporary artworks and reproductions to tell the story of Negros. It may not have much memorabilia from the olden times, but Negros Museum makes sure to focus on showing what the province was like hundreds of years ago and how its locals have evolved through time through art.
8. Campuestohan Highlands Resort
If you only had one site to visit in Bacolod, Campuestohan Highlands Resort should be on your shortlist. The resort offers a variety of amenities and activities you, your family, and your friends will enjoy. Kids can enjoy the swimming pools, playground, and heroes hall. Those who are looking for an adventure can try the zipline, sky bicycle, hanging hamster wheel, or the wave pool. Seniors can relax at the spa or coffee shop. There are enough activities to keep you busy for days at Campuestohan Highlands Resort.
9. Mambukal Mountain Resort
(photo via Shutterstock) If you like enjoying nature, you should drop by Mambukal Mountain Resort . The site offers a range of adventures waiting to be explored. You can enjoy their butterfly sanctuary and bat watching areas, or go on their famous seven-waterfall trek course. They also have wall climbing facility, a lagoon, a zipline, and swimming pools among others.
10. Pulang Tubig Falls
An 80-meter high majestic waterfall sits in the forest of Patag in Silay City. The waterfall got its name from the color of the water that ran from the falls during the Japanese regime. It is said that a Japanese headquarters sat atop the mountain and the waters turned red from the soldiers’ blood. It’s quite a long trek to reach the waterfalls, but the view is absolutely worth it!

Sports Tourism Forum
Tourism is known as one of the world’s largest industries; two of its notable components that cover areas of travel, service, accommodation, entertainment and wellness are sports and recreation. These activities ultimately make sports and tourism the fastest growing sector worldwide, especially in the Philippines.
S ports tourism has played an important role in boosting the country’s travel and tourism industry as it attracts people from all walks of life to a particular location as a sport event participant or an event spectator. As a result, revenue streams and resources start flowing in for local event organizers and sports friendly businesses that impressively turns sports tourism into a multi-billion dollar a year industry.
The Sports Tourism Forum was established in 2005 by Selrahco Management’s Charles Lim as a platform to create awareness of the benefits of sports tourism across all regions. It is committed to establish a particular city or province in the Philippines as an ideal sports city and to instruct destinations on how to successfully present their bid to host sports events.
Conducted with the full support of the Philippine Department of Tourism and its allied agencies, the local government units, and the local and multi corporations and tourism stakeholders, the purpose of STF is to evaluate sporting and tourist facilities in each location, establish local government unit and national sports association support, provide inputs on sports event organizing, share inputs on sports event marketing and sponsorship, and impart knowledge about media exposure on destination marketing.
In 2005, STF first served the host cities of Cebu, Bacolod and Subic during the Southeast Asian Games in their preparation for the successful hosting and marketing of the games. The forum then expanded to Davao City, Puerto Princesa, Laoag, Angeles City/Clark, Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro.

The city government here is gearing up for the staging of the Philippine Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Games 2024 Visayas Regional Qualifying Leg on May 26 to June 1, an event seen to boost the position of Bacolod as a sports tourism destination.
CHED-Western Visayas Regional Director Raul Alvarez and Carlos Hilado Memorial State University President Norberto Mangulabnan witnessed the MOA signing.
The ROTC Games 2024 is themed “Husay ng ROTC, Husay ng Kabataan.” (PNA)

Utah County tourism partners gather to clean at Bridal Veil Falls
By curtis booker - | may 17, 2024.
Now that spring is in full swing, recreation spaces like Bridal Veil Falls will see thousands of visitors over the coming months. In efforts to help maintain the environment, dozens of volunteers spent part of Thursday morning with trash bags, tree-trimming tools and work gloves in hand for a cleanup service project in the upper Bridal Veil Falls day use area.
The event was hosted by Explore Utah Valley with help from volunteers within their partnering agencies in the tourism and hospitality industries across Utah County. The crew was guided by members of the U.S. Forest Service’s Pleasant Grove Ranger District.
Ryan Crafts, chief operating officer at Culinary Crafts, a catering and events company in Pleasant Grove, along with wife Jennifer were tasked with shoveling out the firepits in the grills along the grassy area. Both worked to stuff trash bags with old ash, rocks and burnt-up nails, in which a discovery was made.
“I didn’t ever understand why they tell you to not burn pallets but it’s because they’re full of nails and they tear up the trash bags and they make it a nightmare to clean up,” Ryan Crafts said.
The couple lives near the mouth of Provo Canyon and often run, hike and bike in the area. “This is home, this is where we play. We ski at Sundance and mountain bike just right on that opposite side of that wall over there. And so it just made sense to come and help and clean up,” Ryan Crafts told the Daily Herald.
Taking part in tidying up a portion of the grassy picnic area has encouraged them to come back for family recreating. “It’s just exciting to have ownership of a place that we see and now even know more about, and we’re really excited to bring our kids, grill some hot dogs and roast s’mores,” Jennifer Crafts said.
While the Craftses filled wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow with trash bags, others picked up debris and waste along the Provo River banks, trimmed tree branch limbs that were formed in a pile to be hauled off by U.S. Forest Service rangers, or simply moved large rocks away from areas where someone may get injured.
“We don’t want our visitors to come and see a lot of trash or have dangerous areas that they’re trying to navigate. We want them to have a positive experience and and share that experience with others,” Explore Utah Valley Executive Director Lee Adamson said.
Though the scenic attraction is owned by Utah County, preserving its beauty and sustainability is a collective effort.
Cody Chamberlain is the volunteer coordinator for the Pleasant Grove Ranger District with the U.S. Forest Service. He emphasized the vital role citizens play in environmental conservation: “It proves the recreational quality for everyone that comes after to visit the site. It’s a huge amount of help.”
Kelsey Backus Benson, community relations manager for Explore Utah Valley, calls the upper Bridal Veil Falls area a hidden gem and encourages visitors to recreate responsibly. “Make sure to pack in what you pack out and don’t take away things that will inhibit other people’s beauty,” Backus Benson told the Daily Herald of the area surrounded by bridges overlooking the Provo River and asphalt trails.
Explore Utah Valley hosts service projects several times a year, usually about a once a quarter. In the meantime, those interested in volunteer work at Bridal Veil Falls are encouraged to contact the U.S. Forest Service Pleasant Grove Ranger District .

Nora on ‘Bona’: Triumphant and vindicated
- Tito Genova Valiente
- May 17, 2024
- 5 minute read
IT was a hot afternoon in Bacolod when I received this message from Nora Aunor. The message was succinct:
“Magandang hapon po, Tito [Good afternoon, Tito].”
“Share ko lang po yong sulat galing kay Vincent [Paul-Boncour] na may ari po ng Carlotta Films na taga-France. Siya po ang bumili ng rights ng Bona na kanilang ni-restore. Ang Bona po ay ipapalabas nila sa Cannes Film Festival ngayong May po pag napili po sa Cannes Classic. [May I share with you the letter from Vincent who is from France and who owns Carlotta Films. He bought the rights to Bona, which they restored. Bona [Nora was writing the title of the film in all caps] will be shown in the Cannes Film Festival this May if it is selected for Cannes Classic].”
Nora continues: “Sa France lang po sila may rights…sa Asia po ako pa rin po ang may ari ng rights ng Bona. ’Yong sa America hindi pa po pinag-uusapan [They own the rights only in France…in Asia, I remain the owner of the rights to Bona. As to the case of America, it has not been discussed yet].”
This was the letter, which we reprint here as is:
“Dear Nora,
I hope you are fine.
We are finishing the restoration of Bona, we’re happy with the result, which is very good, amazing quality of the image, picture, color, and we also restored the sound, to have the best element.
We are doing new French and English subtitles.
And also working on the promotional material: poster, press dossier.”
The letter goes on:
“As you know, our goal is to launch Bona’s new restoration at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. We submitted it to the comité, the reactions were very good, and they really love the film.”
Vincent, at this point, tells Nora that the decision of the body will be released in April.
More good news are revealed by the letter: “After Cannes is confirmed, the idea is to bring the film to other festivals, such as Cinela Ritrovato in Bologna, Italia, NY Film Festival, and many others.” Vincent talks of the film being released “in French theaters, then Blu-ray, VOD in France and French-speaking territories. The letter affirms what the fans of Nora would delight in: “We are working with the US company KANI, which is going to release the film in France. We are representing international rights, except Asia, which are with you [italics mine].”
Toward the end, the letter stresses: “It would be great if you could be in Cannes for the screenings, events, and to reunite you and Philip Salvador.”
For those who are in touch with Nora, we already know the news, unfortunate as it may seem on the surface: the great actor cannot make it for health reasons. In my many conversations with her, Nora (who I address most of the time as Ate Guy) confessed to being sad about this turn of events but she could not imagine anymore the long hours of travel, “especially the take-off and the landing, which, according to her, could tax her breathing.
This may be a bit of a depressing news for most of us who worship at the shrine of this incomparable tragedienne but we have to remember, she—and the entire Philippine film industry—will be ably represented in Cannes by Bona, a film described by Variety as “one of the landmark films of Philippine cinema.”
It would be an injustice for me to write again about Bona’s sterling accomplishment. Allow me to quote my own essay on the film:
“After Mario O’ Hara’s Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, which massively surprised her fans and even her detractors when Nora was declared as the first Best Actress by the newly established Gawad Urian from the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, which would turn out to be the most prestigious critics group, she would produce with her own NV Production Bona.
“The story is about a fan fawning over a stuntman who thinks he is this big action star. The feast of the Nazarene is at the center of this tale. A crowd falling for the power of the Public Christ parallels the myth of the fanatic and her idol. Nora’s fandom was at its riotous best at this point. For the idol (who was dubbed ‘the Superstar’) to play the role of a fan was strange, daring and subversive. For those who read films, Bona is Nora’s own cautionary tale about how the worst and grand can come from being a fan, and how the bad and the evil could be with an idol who is placed beyond reach, only for those who put her up there to declare she is theirs. But Bona is not merely the hagiographic in Nora’s life; Bona is about the profane and the dangerous, anomalous interstices that doubt and religion can fall into.
“Critics have heaped praises on Bona. Still, the enjoyment of the film remains anchored to a performance of Nora who flirts with the most unattractive character there is. If there is a sympathy to be gained by this fan drawn by Nora from her own experience, it is in the distillation of the human agency. When are we free from social relations? Individuated, Nora in that scene where she goes to the wake of her father tells us that, for all the ups and downs in her career, her recovery is not from that life but in the lives she essays and pays tribute to keenly—in comedy or in tragedy. Thus, when her brother batters her, Nora’s Bona careens and tumbles and finally falls down and out of the house and into the street of her own shattered dreams. Before that happens, we are witness to a thespian who knows how to act with her body, that even with her back turned to the audience, one senses the fear, the defiance, the last warning to oneself about how worshiping should be limited to the divine. Nora was 26.”
One of the most difficult scenes in the film was how to shoot Nora who, at the time of Bona, was the most popular actor in the land. I had to ask her: What happened in that crowd scene in Quiapo? Wasn’t it difficult?
Here is her recollection of that day (which I translated from Filipino):
“It was not difficult; I thought of myself as one of the devotees of the Nazareno who wanted to touch Him.
“I was accompanied by maybe one or two staff when we entered a store in Quiapo where the procession would directly pass by. Direk [director Lino Brocka] instructed them to hide me first and to cover the store front so that people would not see me. When the Nazarene was almost in front of the store, one of the staff of Direk Lino then told me that once he told me to follow him, that was already ‘action’ and that the camera was already running. There were, I guess, two or three cameras at work. I did not know where the other two cameras were. What I knew was the handheld camera that was following me for closer shots.
“So there I was feeling the moment, and I did what I was sensing then. But when I saw the face of the Nazarene, I shivered and trembled. I forgot there was a camera on me; I was not thinking anymore of the shoot.”
And the rest is history.

The Bacolod City government is gearing up for the staging of the Philippine Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Games 2024 Visayas Regional Qualifying Leg on May 26 to June 1, an event seen to boost the position of Bacolod as a sports tourism destination.
On Monday, May 6, Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez and Major General Elpidio Talja, commander of the Philippine Air Force Reserve Command, led the signing of the memorandum of agreement (MOA) in a ceremony held at Bacolod City Government Center in the presence of Senator Francis Tolentino, honorary chairperson of the Games’ Executive Organizing Committee.
Tolentino said the second edition of the ROTC Games will have more competitions, among these are the events added by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), such as basketball 5×5, volleyball, and raiders competition.
CHED-Western Visayas Regional Director Raul Alvarez and Carlos Hilado Memorial State University President Norberto Mangulabnan witnessed the MOA signing.
The ROTC Games 2024 is themed “Husay ng ROTC, Husay ng Kabataan.” (PNA)

Subscriber only, seminole hotel guests may soon fund new indoor events complex in county.
Commissioners approved forming a tourism improvement district (TID) which allows hotels with more than 65 rooms to tack on an extra fee to a guest’s bill for each room night’s stay.
County officials and hoteliers have long said Seminole needs an indoor venue for events that attract visitors and fill hotel rooms.
“We need to continue to build tourism here and this is the next step,” said Bruce Skwarlo, general manager of the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary and chair of Seminole’s Tourist Development Council. “This is going to drive room nights. … This is going to be wonderful for our citizens.”
The TID assessment would be set and collected by hoteliers. The revenue would fund building and maintaining the indoor facility — proposed for a 28-acre site near the Boombah Sports Complex and Orlando Sanford International Airport.
The flat-rate fee would likely be under $10 per room night, according to county officials. A $3 assessment, for example, could generate up to $5.6 million in the first year, according to county documents.
“This is not a tax on our residents. It’s the hoteliers taxing themselves,” Commissioner Bob Dallari said.
The TID assessment would be added to a hotel room bill on top of the county’s 5% tourist tax and 7% state sales tax.
Orlando will pay $6 million to bring Travel + Leisure downtown
County officials noted the average daily rate for a hotel room in Seminole last year was $128.90 — one of the lowest in Central Florida. In Orange County — with its theme parks and resorts — a comparable room was about $86 higher. So the extra fee would still keep Seminole hotel rooms at a lower cost, proponents said.
There are about 200 TIDs in 20 states around the country. The only other one in Florida is in the historic community of Ybor City, northeast of Tampa. West Hollywood, Calif., known for its vibrant nightlife that lures tourists, established the first such district in the early 1990s and it now raises about $41 million a year.
With the commission’s approval, the next step is for a majority of the county’s larger hotels — those with 60 rooms or more — to approve by end of June formation of the TID through a petition drive.
Seminole’s larger hotels have seen the bulk of visitors booking rooms for large amateur sports at the county’s facilities, including Boombah.
Hotel representatives would then establish a governing board that would set the assessment rate by the end of July. The board would manage TID funds and turn revenue over to the county. If everything goes as planned, the new assessment would go into place in January 2025.
The county would then use the revenues as leverage to finance bonds for construction of the indoor complex. County officials don’t have a date for when construction would start but a timetable could come as early next year.
The facility is proposed for at least 140,000 square feet — roughly 1½ times the size of a Walmart Supercenter — and accommodate 6,000 spectators. It would sit on land northwest of the intersection of Moore’s Station Road and East Lake Mary Boulevard.
Besides hosting sporting events — such as basketball, volleyball, martial arts and gymnastics — the complex could be used for musical events, theatrical performances or school graduations. Most Seminole high schools with hundreds of graduates hold annual commencement ceremonies at sites outside the county — such as the University of Central Florida — because there’s no suitable indoor facility in the county.
Since opening in 2016, Boombah has hosted 401 events and brings in tens of millions of dollars to the county every year from visitors, officials said. A recent county survey revealed 42% of Seminole’s hotel guests come for events at Boombah.
“It has been a tremendous success,” said Danny Trosset, Seminole’s director of sports tourism.
A new indoor complex near Boombah would augment sports tourism in the county, Jaclyn Lorigan, general manager of Hilton Inn in Altamonte Springs, said in support of the TID proposal.
“This is an opportunity for the local government to support sports tourism,” Lorigan said.

The Bacolod Film Festival is now accepting script submissions with the theme “Stories with a Smile” or those with a “potential to inspire laughter, warmth, and a renewed appreciation for the brighter side of life.”
The filmfest, set to be held in September this year, is open to filmmakers who are registered voters and residents of Bacolod City. They can be producers, directors, or scriptwriters of an entry.
The festival accepts short film scripts of any genre, such as romance, drama, comedy, or horror, in any Filipino language with English translation. Entries must be submitted on or before May 18, Saturday, 11:59 p.m., after which ten (10) finalists will be chosen.
Selected filmmakers will be given a production grant of 300,000 pesos each, to be released in two tranches, of which the first one is worth 200,000 pesos. The remaining 100,000 pesos will be released once the picture lock version of the film has been submitted.
The total running time of the produced films must be at a minimum of fifteen (15) minutes and maximum of twenty (20) minutes, including opening and closing credits. The short films must be in narrative live action form, when taken as a whole. Documentary, experimental or animation will not be accepted, except if added only as elements within the film.
The Bacolod Film Festival aims to create a venue where local filmmakers and producers can showcase their talents and further solidify Bacolod, known as the “City of Smiles,” as one of the creative hubs for filmmaking in the Philippines.
“Bacolod should be proud of its creatives. We have very artistic directors, and actors,” Mayor Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez, who also chairs the Bacolod Film Festival Council, said.
