Several weeks back, we featured for you Star Trek Continues,  the critically-acclaimed, fan-made sequel to the original TV series , which tries to answer the questions: What if  Star Trek had continued? How would the story have played out?

Others have tried to offer up answers to those questions too. And we’d be remiss, a reader reminded us, if we didn’t give a little airtime to  Star Trek: New Voyages , “ the longest-running, Star Trek original series fan production in the world.” Here’s a little more information about the production from the show’s web site :

Created in 2003 by James Cawley, along with producer Jack Marshall, the show strives to complete the “five-year mission” of the Starship Enterprise, “to boldly go where no man has gone before.” It’s celebration of Gene Roddenberry’s legacy has won critical acclaim and numerous accolades, as well as attracting the attention and participation of Star Trek alumni such as George Takei and Walter Koenig, who have returned to reprise their roles on NEW VOYAGES. We have even provided prop items for the actual STAR TREK franchise series “Enterprise”!

All 10 episodes can viewed online or downloaded from the show’s website . And you can also find them on YouTube too . Start with Episode 1 above.

' data-src=

James Cawley and crew are back with a new episode of the award-winning fan series Star Trek New Voyages: Phase II .

Based on an original script by Jon Povill, for Paramount’s Star Trek: Phase II in 1977, “The Child” which was reworked for Star Trek: The Next Generation , you can for the first time watch the episode as it was originally written.

Official episode description:

While the Enterprise passes through a strange energy cloud, a mysterious light force enters the ship and impregnates Ensign Isel who, within days, gives birth to a baby girl, Irska. The child grows up at a tremendous rate and while she appears to be human, it is feared she could endanger the ship after a strange alien spacecraft appears and puts everyone in jeopardy….

Watch the episode below.

Promotional poster for the episode:

Star Trek Phase 2: "The Child"

Star Trek New Voyages: Phase II is an award-winning independent webseries that produces new episodes of Classic Star Trek . Continuing the fourth and fifth seasons of the original series, we film the untold stories of the U.S.S. Enterprise, Captain Kirk, and his crew with the intention of filling in the missing years of the original five year mission, and bridging the gap to Star Trek: The Motion Picture . We are a group of fans who have come together with a common love for the classic era Star Trek for the purpose of having fun while making new episodes. It is the goal of Star Trek New Voyages: Phase II to support and promote the CBS/Paramount Star Trek franchise by giving fans an active way to continue their interest in Classic Star Trek.

star trek new voyages where to watch

James Cawley is a professional Elvis Presley imitator and his hobby has always been Star Trek. He was given the original blueprints to the Desilu sets and started to build them. After b uilding the bridge, sickbay and several other sets, he teamed up with the director Jack Marshall and a number of fans whose aim it was to create the missing two years of the original five year mission under James T. Kirk.

The Star Trek New Voyages team started to create new episodes, based on the original series, to continue where Kirk and his crew had left off when their series was cancelled. They are even numbering their episodes as the fourth season and have so far managed to release 11 new episodes (including the Pilot from 2003).

The series was made as a fan film project under the direction of James Cawley, who also played James T. Kirk in the New Voyages/Phase II incarnation until mid-2012. Starting with “Bread and Savagery”, Cawley passed on the iconic role of Captain Kirk to the professional actor Brian Gross. James continued to helm the show as Executive Producer, making costumes etc.

Withdrawn from the official Phase II website but is once again available on the Star Trek New Voyages: Phase II-International website.

Rating: 2.5 or 3. This original pilot is not as technically proficient as their other episodes. It has a convoluted plot which, in many ways, doesn't quite work. Still, this episode would be the pride of many of the other fan film groups.

This show introduces us to the new cast for TOS, but the story is convoluted, and not only because there are two sets of entirely unknown aliens who have undefined special powers but also because the main characters, particularly Kirk, act strangely. Kirk trusts an alien woman who has proven herself untrustworthy, and seems to know which of two aliens caused a problem without any evidence. The writer seems to want to grab the Q and the Borg and bring them, together, back into TOS. The sets are excellent, the acting is good, particularly considering how weak the script is. The editing is excellent, and the show holds our interest. The use of images from the TOS shows and movies recast with the new actors helps us in the transition, which, years later, was also made by Paramount. - Barb Reader

In Harms Way

' src=

01 — 50min 46sec — 08 October 2004 In an adventure that spans centuries, Captain Kirk fights alongside a U.S.S. Enterprise from the past to stop the devastating "Doomsday Wars" that should never have happened. In a universe forever changed by those events, the crew of the Enterprise must once again battle the powerful juggernaut known as the "Doomsday Machine."

This show is better written than "Come What May," and instead suffers from, if anything, a little too much realism. In fact, the repeated, similar problems the crew encounters, in which it takes a few tries to get it right, feels more like real life than like TV.  Maybe just a little too much like real life.  This show is also the beginning of Phase II/New Voyages signature, the use of aged original TOS actors in their films.  The time jumping was hard to follow, but it was in keeping with the Star Trek pre-JJA use of timelines, even if it would have given Captain Janeway a headache.  It was confusing, but coherent, the opposite of "Come What May." One of the elements of fan films which is commendable is how many, including this one, build on elements from past shows and movies, although the use of Doomsday Machine Wars seems to be a fan film theme which has been done a number of times by various groups. Given our current worry about nuclear proliferation, that is, perhaps, appropriate as well. I rate this episode a strong 3.5. The show had a strong 'fun' factor, showing us the space shuttle in a typical one-car garage in a modest suburban home, and bringing us back to where TOS started, with a shot of the injured Pike waiting for his journey to the planet where his life will go on, if only as an illusion.  It is more amateurish than Phase II/New Voyages' later show but shows significant growth, too. Much of the plot seems to turn around trying to allow William Windom his return performance.   The idea that the attack of the Doomsday Machines would cause the Klingon alliance to happen earlier is certainly believable.  However, the show has the feeling of trying to just do too much. You feel their anxiety that this could be their last show, and they are trying to squeeze too much into it.  As time goes on, the confidence of the Phase II team grows, and their product improves with their confidence. - Barb Reader

JAMES CAWLEY releases the unfinished STAR TREK: PHASE II “Origins: The Protracted Man”!

star trek new voyages where to watch

It’s been five years since fans have seen anything new from STAR TREK: PHASE II (a.k.a. STAR TREK: NEW VOYAGES ). The most recent completed Phase II episode to debut was “ The Holiest Thing ” in January of 2016. But that changed last week with the unexpected release of a never-completed episode filmed way back in 2010-2011: “Origins: The Protracted Man,” directed by DAVID GERROLD and co-written by him along with Trek novelist DAVE GALANTER.

Phase II founder and show-runner JAMES CAWLEY had announced, shortly before the unveiling of the fan film guidelines by CBS in June of 2016, that Phase II would cease all fan film production. Then two weeks after the guidelines came out, James announced that his TOS sets in Ticonderoga, NY would become a brand new, licensed STAR TREK Original Series SET TOUR .

Fans were certainly excited by the opportunity to walk these amazing TOS set recreations that had previously been reserved only for fan filmmakers and special guests. But what about the episodes of Phase II that had already been filmed (or partially filmed)? Would these be completed and released? There were still three unfinished Phase II projects: “Bread and Savagery” (a sequel to the TOS episode “Bread and Circuses), “Torment of Destiny” (a sequel to “For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky” and featuring the now-deceased RICHARD HATCH), and “Origins: The Protracted Man.”

The answer seemed to be that these three episodes would forever remain in limbo. None was in any condition to be released (or so we were told), and with Retro Studios in upstate New York now turned into a licensed set tour, James didn’t appear to be in interested in having any of these remaining Phase II projects completed. In fact, in the case of “Bread and Savagery,” the director, MARK BURCHETT, had passed away in 2014. Certain actors were also no longer available, and in some cases, the footage that had been filmed wasn’t shot properly (camera and/or sound issues), and wouldn’t be usable…and reshoots were rather problematic.

And so these three episodes remained hidden away, inaccessible to fans beyond this really exciting trailer for “Torment of Destiny” and this equally exciting trailer for “Origins: The Protracted Man” (along with a couple of scene clips, including one of Kirk’s Koybashi Maru test and another in sickbay).

Fan were desperate to see more, as these two episodes looked amazing. They were also quite special for other reasons. In addition to “Torment of Destiny” featuring the late RICHARD HATCH, “Origins” featured actor COLIN CUNNINGHAM as Christopher Pike (Cunningham’s extensive Hollywood career includes recurring and regular roles in such series as Stargate SG-1 , Falling Skies , and Preacher ). Also, voice-over actor JEFF JOHNSON turned in such an amazing performance as Cadet Finnegan that you would’ve sworn they’d managed to kidnap original Finnegan actor BRUCE MARS by beaming him through time!

Other members of the cast would go on to become familiar faces in the Star Trek fan film community. In 2012, FRANK HERNANDEZ would play Dr. Gene Carter, the father of JOHN BROUGHTON’s character of Captain Jack Carter in STARSHIP FARRAGUT ‘s “ The Price of Anything .” KIM STINGER , who played Uhura in a number of New Voyages / Phase II episodes, would go on to the play the same iconic character in the entire run of STAR TREK CONTINUES . Also appearing briefly as a helmsman in the framing sequence of “Origins” was TODD HABERKORN , who later became STC ‘s Mr. Spock.

star trek new voyages where to watch

But certainly the most notable and familiar fan film face in the cast was VIC MIGNOGNA , who would go on to portray Captain Kirk in all eleven episodes and three vignettes of STC . But this time, Vic was portraying George Kirk, Captain Kirk’s father, and did an amazing job in the role. At the time (“Origins” was filmed in the summer of 2010 and additional scenes were shot the following winter), Vic was a rising star in the world of Phase II . The previous year, he had directed their most ambitious episode to date “ Kitumba ,” along with playing the Klingon character Malkthon, a fairly significant role. Unfortunately, not long after filming his scenes in “Origins,” Vic and Phase II would part ways among quite a bit of conflict and controversy (but that’s a blog for another day).

star trek new voyages where to watch

Speaking of Captain Kirk, “Origins” marked the final time that Phase II founder James Cawley would don the gold tunic as the iconic character, and only in two brief framing sequences bookending the episode. Following “Origins,” actor BRIAN GROSS would be brought in to play Kirk beginning with his introduction as the character in the vignette “ Going Boldly .”

star trek new voyages where to watch

A final familiar fan film face appearing briefly in “Origins” was ALEC PETERS, playing Garth of Izar a fictional decade before the events of the TOS episode “Whom Gods Destroy.” This was actually Alec’s first trip to Retro Studios in upstate New York and his first-ever appearance as Garth. He would return as Garth in the Phase II “Going Boldly” vignette, and then later in the groundbreaking Star Trek fan film PRELUDE TO AXANAR . Alec will be reprising the role again in the upcoming fan films INTERLUDE and the two-part AXANAR sequel.

“Origins” actually got its start way back in 1967 when script writer David Gerrold was hoping to land a job writing for TOS. After turning down David’s first script submission, Star Trek producer GENE L. COON asked David for five additional story ideas. One eventually developed into the fan-favorite episode “The Trouble with Tribbles.” The other four were never used, but one of them was titled “The Protracted Man.” ( You can read a synopsis here —don’t ya just love the Internet?)

star trek new voyages where to watch

David Gerrold had initially gotten involved with Star Trek: New Voyages/Phase II a few years prior to 2010 when he co-wrote the two-part “Blood and Fire,” based on a ST:TNG script idea dealing with homosexuality and AIDS that had been rejected by Paramount for being too hot-button. However, when David joined the group in Ticonderoga, that script was adapted by CARLOS PEDRAZA, and David directed the episode, the first to transition the series name from New Voyages to Phase II .

star trek new voyages where to watch

Star Trek novelist DAVE GALANTER came aboard for Phase II ‘s next episode, “ Enemy: Starfleet ” (based on a story by Dave and writing partner GREG BRODEUR ), and also updated the writers guide for the series. When the opportunity came to adapt David Gerrold’s “The Protracted Man” into an episode of Phase II , the idea merged with something that Dave Galanter had wanted to try: a story focusing on young Cadet James Kirk at Starfleet Academy. The J.J. ABRAMS’ 2009 Star Trek reboot had premiered the year before, establishing that Jim Kirk’s father, George Kirk, had served in Starfleet. The hybrid story, co-written by both David and Dave, used certain elements of the original 1967 idea but with Cadet Kirk trying to save his father George, who is serving on board the U.S.S. Enterprise under command of Fleet Captain Christopher Pike, first officer Number One, and an annoying Vulcan science officer named Spock.

Last week on January 4, 2021, without any fanfare or explanation, James Cawley quietly posted “Origins: The Protracted Man” in its unfinished format. The film is still very close to completed, but there are some obvious places where the sound and/or image quality is off, the VFX are low resolution or missing entirely, and some scenes remain unfilmed. And the entire film is has a slight horizontal compression. But nevertheless, there is enough to get a good feel for how this excellent fan film would have turned out…including amazingly powerful performances by Colin Cunningham as Pike, Vic Mignogna as George Kirk, BRANDON STACY as Spock, and perhaps most impressive, MATTHEW EWALD as Cadet James Kirk.

I’ve reached out to James Cawley to see why he decided to post this 2-part fan film now, but he has not yet responded. It’s possible that James felt it was appropriate to release “Origins” now following the untimely death of Dave Galanter on December 12, 2020. Six weeks earlier, Dave had announced via Facebook and Twitter that he had cancer originating in his bile ducts and had been fighting the disease for the past year. His doctors now said that he had perhaps another 3 to 6 months to live, but sadly, he passed away only a month and a half later. It seems appropriate that this fan film that he worked on is now finally being shown to the public.

UPDATE – A day after this blog was posted, the two videos of “Origins” were removed from YouTube by James Cawley, a week after initially being posted.

Just as I was considering pulling down this blog, I was made aware of a separate YouTube channel posting the same episode as a single 52-minute video. I’ve just spent some time thinking about whether to publish this link or just pull down this blog entry. You see, unlike “Torment of Destiny”—which James Cawley had also posted online in an uncompleted version and then took down but which will, in fact, one day be finished—“Origins” will never be completed. There is footage that was never shot, and the actors who need to finish it are no longer available and are a decade older now anyway. So really, this is the only chance for fans to see this important piece of Star Trek fan film history.

And so, after much thought, and in honor of Dave Galanter’s recent passing, I have decided to keep the blog posted and include the following new link to a separate posting of the episode. Not being the one to have posted the video, I am simply linking to a version of the videos that are out there anyway. Assuming that this person leaves the video posted, fans will be able to view it below…

28 thoughts on “JAMES CAWLEY releases the unfinished STAR TREK: PHASE II “Origins: The Protracted Man”!”

It’s a very nice tribute to Mr Galanter and a nice bts peek for some of us who wonder how it goes together.

Oh, and it seems a very rough, but complete copy of “Torment of Destiny” (Missing music, all of the FX, no Captain’s Logs voice over) James had actually posted (but I’m guessing it was “unlisted”) some time ago is now also available.

This is a good example showing how Fan Films are put together. I’m grateful James had made these two available.

I’m actually surprised ViacomCBS had no problem with him releasing the unfinished version…

I’ve removed the link to “Torment” from you comment, Herb, because I was asked not to publish it. That was a very early rough edit given to James Cawley as a courtesy and never intended to be shown publicly. One actually wonders why James didn’t contact the person with the original footage to tell them that it was now finally okay to finish “Torment” the way it was always intended. That would honor Richard Hatch’s performance much better than this unfinished rough cut. The episode is actually ready to be properly completed with editing, sound-mixing, VFX, etc., but it will require a concerted effort by a number of people to bring that to fruition (and probably some crowd-funding…I’lll keep you posted). Until then, however, I have chosen not to facilitate people linking to the rough cut.

Fascinating is that in “Origins…” like later in DISCO Pike is shown as kind of joker. Accidental (???) continuity, and the same direction of retcon explaining his words from “The Cage” that sounds today as sexist and outdated.

It’s hard to judge 1965 by the standards of 2020. In the same way, I am certain that 2075 (assuming we make it) will look back at 2020 with great disdain for our “outdated” opinions. 🙂

I’m not attacking TOS, Jonathan. Yes, times are changing, and collective consciousness is changing too 😉 . And… for its times The Original Trek was progressive as hell 😉 .

I didn’t think you were attacking TOS; I simply wanted to point out (as you just did, too) that even a progressive show for its time still suffered from many of the societal naiveties of its era. As it happened, Pike’s comment was actually pretty forward-thinking for its time. He, a man living 300 years in the future, couldn’t get used to women on the bridge. What Roddenberry was saying was that he believed that women would eventually be treated as equals…Roddenberry simply believed it would take another 300 years to happen. He, like most men of the 60s, had no idea that they were onlly one decade away from the women’s rights movement and the dawn of the E.R.A.

Awe to get this in any form…How about a campaign to get “Torment of Destiny” completed AND released in memory of Richard Hatch! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2op9JsNwuo0 Allegedly it’s all in the can and just needs post (not a small task I realize), but it was shot before the guidelines as were many now seeing the light of day (Yorktown: A time to Heal being imminent too). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb1gFKzfzpg

None of these will be 15 min for sure…. Any takers?

Actually, there are wheels that have just started spinning on this. However, there will need to be quite a large amount of crowd-funding–likely in the low-to-mid five-figure range–to finance post-production properly. But I know that fans loved Richard Hatch and will want to see this project completed. Stay tuned.

You probably already know that the videos are marked “Private” and “removed by uploader”.

Too bad. I was a real fan of the collaboration between the professionals and fans back in the “New Voyages”/”Phase II” days. And I was looking forward to seeing these videos.

Look again. A fan from the other side of the planet decided to download the videos while they were still available and then reposted them. I’ve decided to re-link to those uploaded versions so that fans will be able to keep enjoying this film.

I came across it by chance on YT a couple of days ago, under the rather innocuous title of VTS (parts 1&2). I even considered e-mailing you in case you were unaware, but silly me – of course you were!

I thought it was absolutely terrific. Such a shame it wasn’t released as intended, but even in its unfinished and un-polished form it still told an exciting and engaging story with action and pathos in good measure, and highly respectful of characters and canon. Pike’s dressing-down of cadet Kirk was top notch, and well played by both actors. Kinda nice to see James Cawley back in the centre seat too, despite some of his rather unkind detractors. And overall I thought it was a good deal more entertaining, dramatic and credible than any episode of Discovery to be honest, but that would lead to a well-worn rant…

I was (pleasantly) surprised that it was released TBH, given all that has happened. I’m not a great student of ST fan films or the emerging rivalry between P2/NV and STC, but there’s little doubt that both camps delivered some highly impressive productions. I think that “World Enough and Time” from P2/NV (with George Takei) was probably one of the finest examples of Star Trek of any kind, despite being a fan production. And STC’s “Lolani” was also right from the top drawer.

I seem to remember you were planning to write a detailed blog entry about P2/New Voyages. Is that still on the cards?

The blog history of ST:NV/P2 is gonna be a real bear to write, and the problem is that James Cawley doesn’t seem inclined to communicate with me or others that I know who know him. Not sure what happened there, as I did interview him back in 2015 for “Mind-Sifter.” There are, of course, certain others who were involved in that series whom I can talk to, but it’s still gonna be a ridiculous amount of work piecing together 13 years of fan film history (not all of it pretty). And right now, I’m focusing on Starship Valiant. After that, my next major established fan series history will likely be either Natures Hunger or George Kayaian’s early work. I also never wrote a history of Prelude to Axanar (a history of just the fan film, that is, not the lawsuit). That one needs some time, too. So NV/P2 is definitely far out on long-range sensors.

What the!! I watched part one and now they’re gone. What happened?

No idea. But thanks to a fan down under, there’s a new link to “Origins” to watch.

Where do I look for the link?

Scroll to the bottom of the blog under the videos.

Any word why James decided to take “Origins” down?

Nope. I reached out to two people who had been reaching out to James to find out why he posted them in the first place. Nobody has heard anything back about why they were posted nor why they were then taken down.

James released the episode just for those who worked on the production to see. He thought all copies had been lost, but then found a copy on DVD and he simply uploaded the files for folks to see with a statement that it will never be finished. It was not intended as a public release and he gave instructions not to announce this anywhere. When we was made aware of this page, we was angry and took his videos offline again. You should have obtained his permission before publishing this article.

I did try to contact James via Facebook and e-mail, Peter (using the last Yahoo e-mail I had from back in 2016). I also asked Alec Peters to reach out to James in case I didn’t get a response (which I didn’t). I even waited a couple of days to give James a chance to contact me back. Beyond that, I don’t have any contacts who know how to get ahold of James except for two people who, sadly and for different reasons, refuse to talk to him anymore (and yes, I did reach out to them, as well, which is how I know they won’t talk to him). So yes, Peter, the effort to reach out to James was indeed made.

To be honest, I didn’t even know that the videos had been posted until three different readers messaged me, very excited, late last week. As we al know, once something is released onto the Internet, it’s out there. The newly uploaded videos are now posted elsewhere and will remain out there whether my blog exists or not. So from a purely journalistic perspective, it seems reasonable to leave the blog up.

It is nice to know, however, the reason that James posted both video, so I appreciate you commenting, Peter.

I came back to see what was up with the last posting of videos and all I see is “publishing in progress”. Oh well. Too bad.

Check again. I updated the page with hyperlinks.

“Origins”… I understand your motivation for not linking crude version of “Torment of Destiny” when it was publicly available but… if your mysterious friend “George Kirk” has its copy of this episode too and will upload it on his Dailymotion account, I will be really glad.

I’ve actually asked him not to, and if he chooses to, I won’t share the link. “Torment of Destiny” can actually be finished properly, and I’ve been asked not to publicize any version of it in the current rough cut stage.

Links, thumbs, regardless all I see is “Publishing in Progress”… it may be down again.

I don’t know what to say, Scott. It’s showing up for me. Have you tried clearing your cache?

I checked with the poster, and he says he can see it, too.

instead of banning star trek continues and star trek phase two they those despicable people should have paid to air those and following episodes they are great and take us back to real star trek….the production for such a small budget words fail me totally bummed

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Renewed For Season 4 At Paramount+

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for Season 4 at Paramount+, despite currently being in production on its third season.

On the other hand, it has been revealed that the animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks , will end with Season 5 on the streaming platform. The final season will premiere this fall.

Strange New Worlds centers around Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is the USS Enterprise commander at this point in the Star Trek universe. He is joined by younger versions of several legacy characters, including Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and Kirk (Paul Wesley).

It debuted in 2022 and had an epic second season that included a musical episode and a crossover episode with Lower Decks , helping it climb aboard Nielsen’s chart of the 10 most-watched streaming original series over multiple weeks.

“On behalf of the cast and crew of ‘Strange New Worlds,’ we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together,” said executive producers and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, along with executive producer Alex Kurtzman in a statement according to Variety . “We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure.”

Lower Decks is set in the years following the feature film Star Trek: Nemesis and centers around the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner ( Tawny Newsome ), Brad Boimler ( Jack Quaid ), D’Vana Tendi ( Noël Wells ) and Sam Rutherford ( Eugene Cordero ).

The series also featured voice cameos from several Star Trek alumni including George Takei , Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor, and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Although some aspects of the storyline make it appropriate to conclude the show, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan are leaving the hull open for future iterations.

“We remain hopeful that even beyond Season 5, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford, and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures,” they said in a message to fans. “While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true.”

Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is slated to premiere in 2025.

Strange new worlds actors reveal cut star trek musical finale moment & why spock dances.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, and Christina Chong drop some BTS about the musical episode's grand finale number.

  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical episode concludes with a grand finale showcasing the power of unity and camaraderie among the crew.
  • Lt. Spock's logical decision to dance in the musical finale helps boost subspace rift's 'improbability levels,' aiding the crew in saving the galaxy.
  • A bonding moment between Uhura and La'an highlights the ensemble's support for each other, showcasing a sense of solidarity and friendship, but it was cut from the episode.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' Celia Rose Gooding and Christina Chong reveal a cut moment from the finale of the first-ever Star Trek musical, and Ethan Peck explains why Lt. Spock decided to dance in the closing musical number, "We Are One." Strange New Worlds season 2's acclaimed musical episode, "Subspace Rhapsody," was written by Dana Horgan and Bill Wolkoff and directed by Dermot Downs. All of the songs were composed by Kay Hanley and Tom Polce from Letters to Cleo. The musical required the entire cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to sing and dance, and everyone embraced the musical with gusto.

In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical episode, a subspace rift created a reality defined by the rules of musicals that threatened to engulf the entire galaxy. Meanwhile, aboard the USS Enterprise, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew unwittingly express their deepest feelings and emotions through songs. Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) deduced that to close the subspace rift, the crew of the Enterprise needed to perform a grand finale, and every single person aboard the starship joined in for the big finish musical number, "We Are One."

Star Trek Strange New Worlds Musical Episode Ending Explained

Star trek: strange new worlds' musical cut a moment from the grand finale, celia rose gooding explains a missing moment from the musical episode..

In an interview with TV Insider, Celia Rose Gooding and Christina Chong reveal that there was a bonding moment between Ensign Nyota Uhura and Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh that was cut from the final version of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' musical episode 's finale number, "We Are One." Read their quotes below:

Celia Rose Gooding: La’an and Uhura had a little handshake moment that we made up on the spot. Christina Chong: We did! Celia Rose Gooding: We did, but that didn’t make it. But in my mind, there was something so beautiful about that after we finished the song. Our instinct was first to just celebrate one another, and then get back to work. I think that is such a nod to our routine as an ensemble to just check on each other and really boost each other up because we’re doing something that some characters are not super comfortable with and that isn’t their instinct to burst out into song. And so that final moment of camaraderie - of course, it had to be shrunk down for the nature of TV - but in my perfect world, there’s an edit of five minutes of everyone just giving each other compliments.

"We Are One" was a catharsis for the crew of the Starship Enterprise. For La'an, the Strange New Worlds musical's finale reaffirmed her decision to be more open with her feelings, even after her confession that she is attracted to Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) didn't go as she had hoped. Meanwhile, Uhura realized that her role in keeping the crew of the Enterprise connected was a gift, and it empowered her to save the ship. Both La'an and Uhura shed their old inhibitions and took steps forward to becoming happier people .

Why Spock Dances In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Finale

Ethan peck knew spock would only dance when it was logical to dance..

Ethan Peck also explained Lt. Spock's decision to dance in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' grand finale, "We Are One." Peck, who understands Spock like Leonard Nimoy did , needed a logical justification for Spock to dance , and he found out. Read Peck's quote below:

Ethan Peck: There was a moment there in that finale where life really imitated art. I mean, that happens so frequently, but never so closely together as in that moment. Spock doesn’t get to participate because, obviously, he doesn’t want to be dancing. I spoke with Dermot, the director, about it. How would Spock dance? Well, I guess he has to to get that meter maxed out so we can break out of the musical reality. And he would do it for that, and so he joins in for the very end of it. So I felt like kind of an outsider. I join in at the very end of that whole sequence. And then Chapel and Spock are sort of on rough terms, and I remember its ending. We had this joyous moment, and then we have kind of a broody look to each other. So my experience was a little bit different from some of the other cast members.

Lt. Spock dancing in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical finale did boost the subspace rift's 'improbability levels ', and helped put the Starship Enterprise crew over the top. Unlike Uhura and La'an's moment, the final cut of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' musical included the awkward moment between Spock and Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) after the couple ended their relationship through song. What happens next between Spock, Chapel, and the crew of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 remains to be seen, although it won't include another musical episode. (At least not in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.)

Original ‘Star Trek’ Enterprise Model Is Found After Being Missing for Decades

The 33-inch model surfaced on eBay after disappearing around 1979. An auction house is giving it to the son of Gene Roddenberry, the creator of “Star Trek.”

A model of the U.S.S. Enterprise stands on a wooden base against a black backdrop.

By Emily Schmall

The first model of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the starship that appeared in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series , has been returned to Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the creator of the series, decades after it went missing.

“After a long journey, she’s home,” Mr. Roddenberry wrote on social media on Thursday.

For die-hard Trekkies, the model’s disappearance had become the subject of folklore, so an eBay listing last fall, with a starting bid of $1,000, didn’t go unnoticed.

“Red alert,” someone in an online costume and prop-making forum wrote, linking to the listing.

Mr. Roddenberry’s father, Gene Roddenberry, created the television series, which first aired in 1966 and ran for three seasons. It spawned numerous spinoffs, several films and a franchise that has included conventions and legions of devoted fans with an avid interest in memorabilia.

The seller of the model was bombarded with inquiries and quickly took the listing down.

The seller contacted Heritage Auctions to authenticate it, the auction house’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said on Saturday. As soon as the seller, who said he had found it in a storage unit, brought it to the auction house’s office in Beverly Hills, Calif., Mr. Maddalena said he knew it was real.

“That’s when I reached out to Rod to say, ‘We’ve got this. This is it,’” he said, adding that the model was being transferred to Mr. Roddenberry.

Mr. Roddenberry, who is known as Rod, said on Saturday that he would restore the model and seek to have it displayed in a museum or other institution. He said reclaiming the item had only piqued his interest in the circumstances about its disappearance.

“Whoever borrowed it or misplaced it or lost it, something happened somewhere,” he said. “Where’s it been?”

It was unclear how the model ended up in the storage unit and who had it before its discovery.

The original U.S.S. Enterprise, a 33-inch model, was mostly made of solid wood by Richard C. Datin, a model maker for the Howard Anderson Company, a special-effects company that created the opening credits for some of the 20th century’s biggest TV shows .

An enlarged 11-foot model was used in subsequent “Star Trek” television episodes, and is now part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum , where it was donated by Paramount Studios in 1974.

Mr. Roddenberry, who said he gave the seller a “reward” for its recovery but did not disclose the terms, assembled a group of “Star Trek” production veterans, model makers and restoration specialists in Beverly Hills to authenticate the find.

The group included a “Star Trek” art supervisor, Michael Okuda, and his wife, Denise, an artist on “Star Trek” television series and films, and Gary Kerr, a “Trek x-pert” who served as technical consultant for the Smithsonian during a 2016 restoration of the 11-foot model.

“We spent at least an hour photographing it, inspecting the paint, inspecting the dirt, looking under the base, the patina on the stem, the grain in the wood,” Mr. Roddenberry said.

“It was a unanimous ‘This is 100 percent the one,’” he said.

Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991 , kept the original model, which appeared in the show’s opening credits and pilot episode, on his desk.

Mr. Kerr compared the model to 1960s photos he had of the model on Mr. Roddenberry’s desk.

“The wood grain matched exactly, so that was it,” he said on Saturday.

The model went missing after Mr. Roddenberry lent it to the makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979, Mr. Maddalena said.

“This is a major discovery,” he said, likening the model to the ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz,” a prop that was stolen in 2005 and recovered by the F.B.I. in 2018, and that Heritage Auctions is selling.

While the slippers represent hope, he said, the starship Enterprise model “represents dreams.”

“It’s a portal to what could be,” he said.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks

“ Star Trek : Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “ Star Trek: Lower Decks ,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.

Popular on Variety

“Lower Decks” charted brand new territory for “Star Trek” when it debuted in 2020, as both an animated comedy and a series that focused on the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). Set in the years following the feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the series has included voice cameos from many beloved “Star Trek” alumni, like George Takei, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Given its premise, concluding “Lower Decks” make sense considering the main four characters all received promotions in Season 4. But in a message to fans, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan left the turbolift doors open for continuing the characters’ stories following their time at the bottom of the Starfleet pecking order.

The “Star Trek” TV universe, overseen by Kurtzman through his Secret Hideout production company and produced by CBS Studios, has enjoyed a robust expansion since “Star Trek: Discovery” first premiered in 2017. Along with “Strange New Worlds,” the made-for-television movie “Star Trek: Section 31” recently concluded production with star Michelle Yeoh, and the new series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will begin shooting later this year.

“It has been incredibly rewarding to continue to build the Star Trek universe, and we’re so grateful to Secret Hideout and our immensely talented casts and producers,” said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of Programming at Paramount+. “‘Strange New Worlds’ has found the perfect blend of action, adventure and humor. Similarly, ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart to the franchise across its four seasons. We can’t wait for audiences to see what is in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in this final season.”

“‘Lower Decks’ and ‘Strange New Worlds’ are integral to the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds,” said CBS Studios president David Stapf. “We are extraordinarily proud of both series as they honor the legacy of what Gene Roddenberry created almost 60 years ago. We are so grateful to work with Secret Hideout, Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and the cast, crews and artists who craft these important and entertaining stories for fans around the world.”
