Summary [ ].

This was the final season of Star Trek: Voyager .

A multitude of familiar aliens are revisited for a final shout including the Ferengi in " Inside Man ", the Hirogen in " Flesh and Blood ", the Klingons in " Prophecy ", the Hierarchy in " The Void " and " Renaissance Man ", the Q in " Q2 ", and the Talaxians in " Homestead ".

" Drive " sees Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres pilot the Delta Flyer in a "trans-stellar rally" before finally tying the knot, and in " Body and Soul ", Seven of Nine is forced to hide The Doctor 's program in her cybernetic implant. In " Q2 " John de Lancie returns with his errant son, desperate for the assistance of "Aunt Kathy" which completes the "Q" story arc begun in seasons two and three, and in " Author, Author ", the crew get to play in the holodeck alongside adulterated versions of themselves, when The Doctor publishes his first holonovel to less than stellar reviews.

After marrying in " Drive ", B'Elanna Torres and Tom Paris' relationship, Torres discovers that she is pregnant in " Lineage ", before contending with a group of Klingons convinced she is carrying the Klingon Messiah in " Prophecy ". Ultimately, Torres gives birth at the very moment Voyager bursts into the Alpha Quadrant from inside an exploding Borg sphere in the series finale " Endgame ".

The series finale, "Endgame" was watched by 8.8 million viewers, significantly less than the show's premiere episode, " Caretaker " with 21.3 million viewers. [1] Still, it pulled in the highest ratings since the premiere episode of the fourth season , " Scorpion, Part II ". Referring to "Endgame" as "the right kind of Star Trek programming", UPN President Tom Nunan publicly declared, " The Voyager finale bodes extremely well for Enterprise 's première next fall. " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 82 , p. 8)

Star Trek Fans Are Petitioning To Get Another Popular Character Their Own Hometown Statue, And There Are 3 Reasons Why I'm On Board With This

Let's all come together to help make this happen.

O'Brien looking shocked at Bashir during a serious conversation.

Star Trek has given fans myriad wonderful characters over the years — we've even ranked them — to the point where fans have crafted permanent real-life tributes to the spacefarers and the values they uphold as members of Starfleet. Considering that's the case, I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone had the idea to honor a cast member of Deep Space Nine , and it's someone known for being the "Most important person in Starfleet."

That's right, efforts are being made to get Colm Meaney's Miles O'Brien his own statue, and I'm 100% on board with this. For those who haven't seen the Change.org petition, the goal is to erect a statue of Miles O'Brien in the character's hometown of Killarney, which is, of course, in Ireland.

As someone currently streaming Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with my Paramount+ subscription , I'm all in on the idea and have a few additional reasons why it'd be grand to see this happen.

A Miles O'Brien Statue Is A Dual Homage To Colm Meaney, And Star Trek: Lower Decks

I should note that while a statue of Miles O'Brien is a great idea, it's not wholly unique as a tribute. Star Trek: Lower Decks first showcased a statue of O'Brien in the Season 1 episode "Temporal Edict." The chief engineer received the honor of being the "Most important person in Starfleet," which series creator Mike McMahan later told StarTrek.com was because he represented the ideal "Lower Decker." He was a crewman who worked his way up the Starfleet ladder all the way to a prestigious teaching position at Starfleet Academy, raising a family in the process.

He's the heart of what makes a good Starfleet Officer, and in all honesty, a damn good person as well. As we prepare for the final season of Lower Decks after it joined the list of shows canceled or ending in 2024 , why not erect this statue in honor of the series that shined on the everyman of Starfleet who strives to their absolute best? We're reportedly already getting a solid conclusion to the series , but this statue would be some real icing on the cake to honor it.

I Absolutely Love The Janeway Statue In Indiana

As both a Star Trek fan and Indiana resident, I couldn't be prouder that there's an actual statue dedicated to Kathryn Janeway in the character's hometown of Bloomington. Whenever I see an online mutual visit to the memorial, my heart beams with pride. It feels silly to say, especially since I've often questioned why Philadelphia has a Rocky statue when there are legitimate boxing legends worthy of celebrating.

What I've ultimately come to realize via Janeway is that it's about the character and what she represents. It also ended up being an attraction of sorts that actress Kate Mulgrew visited, despite concerns from locals she'd create some sort of temporal anomaly in doing so. Wouldn't it be great to see Colm Meaney visit Miles O'Brien's statue, and share some of his thoughts on the character? I certainly think so, especially considering how much he recently advocated that Trekkies are not nuts as some would believe.

Irish Star Trek Fans Deserve A Cool Way To Celebrate The Franchise

Star Trek is a U.S.A. IP that films most of its work in Canada these days, but it's a franchise that is celebrated worldwide. While the show does its best to represent all cultures and humanist values, it's fair to say fans outside of North America don't get quite as much fun seeing the cast at conventions or attending events hosted by Paramount+.

Irish fans need something cool to embrace, and if I'm being honest, the franchise kind of owes them. For all the WTF moments in Star Trek: Voyager , I think the borderline offensive representation of the country via the holodeck city of Fair Haven. We need more of Miles O'Brien when it comes to the Irish in Star Trek , and maybe for a Deep Space Nine follow-up series to be revealed in the next year or so after Alex Kurtzman hinted at something long ago. I won't get greedy, and I'm fine with just seeing this statue erected for now!

I highly encourage supporters to sign the petition, and also watch Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with Paramount+. They can even check out some of his earlier appearances in The Next Generation , which also has a few characters worthy of statues.

Star Trek: Will Riker's Entire Character Timeline Explained

every time the gorn appeared in star trek (so far), 34 years later, star trek's most disappointing tng character exit still hurts.

A scary Star Trek: The Next Generation episode featuring Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) proves that Star Trek could benefit from more horror or thriller narratives. Since the 1960s, Star Trek has been a staple in sci-fi and is often even credited as pioneering many popular tropes of the genre. While Star Trek 's science has matured and modernized over the decades, the core concept of its sci-fi roots has stayed fairly unchanged. However, one Star Trek: The Next Generation episode pushed the boundaries of the genre and incorporated horror and psychological thriller aspects into its chilling narrative.

Star Trek: The Next Generation often dedicated entire episodes to a single character's development, and one such instance for First Officer Commander Will Riker was in TNG season 6, episode 21, "Frame of Mind," which features aspects of the horror and thriller genres. Often considered one of Star Trek: The Next Generation 's best episodes , "Frame of Mind" is one of the franchise's darkest stories . With themes like kidnapping, psychological abuse, physical torture, and emotional manipulation, Commander Riker encounters some of Star Trek 's worst – and best – horror aspects that should make a return to the franchise.

Star Trek Should Follow This TNG Riker Episode's Horror Example

Commander riker's chilling experience in "frame of mind" was an exciting change for star trek.

Star Trek: The Next Generation 's "Frame of Mind" is widely held as one of Commander Will Riker's best episodes , and it's obvious why. Jonathan Frakes is at his very best, showcasing his impressive and diverse acting ability by portraying Riker as not only unsure of his sanity, but also as questioning his surroundings at all times. Through the physical and emotional trials the episode puts him through, Commander Riker's mental stability is tested. Although it isn't Star Trek 's only horror-themed episode, "Frame of Mind" taps into a less direct form of thriller that suits the franchise .

From Star Trek: The Next Generation to Star Trek: Picard, Will Riker's timeline involves some of the most important moments in the entire franchise.

Star Trek 's darkest episodes usually feature narratives responding to real-life struggles, like the consequences of inequality and the real cost of war. What "Frame of Mind" does is highlight how Star Trek can incorporate darker themes and even corporeal horror into a sci-fi setting without losing the suspension of belief. Commander Riker not only suffers mental injuries, but he's also physically tortured by the inhabitants of Tilonus IV. His well-being is a major cause of concern throughout the episode, adding to a sense of edge-of-the-seat suspense that makes the episode even more appealing.

Why Star Trek Needs More Horror

Sci-fi and horror could go hand-in-hand to bring a thrilling new aspect to star trek.

In recent years, Star Trek added a few more horror-like narratives to its growing list of episodes. The resurgence of the Gorn in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has provided some full-on horror Star Trek episodes . However, the Gorn lack a nuanced approach to horror – they're monsters, but they don't provide much psychological thrill. This thriller aspect is what could give Star Trek a real edge in the increasingly competitive streaming market. Mixing sci-fi and horror could also modernize many of Star Trek 's more dated stories to hook younger fans, just like the Gorn in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

The Gorn have already been in 6 Star Trek shows since 1967, but as the villain in Strange New Worlds, they show no signs of disappearing anytime soon.

Star Trek: The Next Generation 's foray into horror provided a sneak peek into scary elements that would appear in future Star Trek projects, but the franchise hasn't included real, unhampered horror. While the occasional thrill and jump scare aren't entirely uncommon in modern Star Trek , the aspect of real mental, and even body, horror has yet to be explored. The underlying vein of suspense, the psychological torture, and the well-written plot twists at every turn make the episode "Frame of Mind" a perfect example of how Star Trek can – and should – include horror to invite a younger audience to the franchise.

Every Star Trek TV Theme Song Ranked: From TOS and TNG to Discovery and Beyond

Star Trek has some of the best music in television history. And here's how the greatest themes stack up with one another.

Star Trek: Voyager

“Space… the Final Frontier.” Those words have a certain sound to them, and not just because you hear the voice of William Shatner or Patrick Stewart saying them. They have a sound to them because they’re associated with music, specifically some of the most iconic themes in television history.

Even more so than the cold opens that accompany most episodes of Star Trek , the themes need to capture the franchise’s sense of wonder, optimism, and discovery. They need to evoke in the mind of the watcher an endless horizon just waiting for a Starfleet crew to find.

Every Star Trek TV theme achieves this goal, albeit some better than others. So here’s our ranking of every theme song from the most pedestrian to the most inspiring.

11. Star Trek: The Animated Series

It’s so much easier to admire Star Trek: The Animated Series than it is to enjoy it. As much as the show manages to evoke the spirit and feel part of the Original Series on a cheap TV animation budget, one has to look past a lot of clunkiness to get to the good stuff.

Ad – content continues below

The same is true of the new theme music by Filmation composer Ray Ellis, under the pseudonym Yvette Blais and Jeff Michael. At times, the TAS theme captures the sense of wonder found in the Original Series theme. But too often it’s thin and tinny, hampered by flat orchestration and poorly-recorded horns. The composition itself isn’t too bad, but it feels quintessentially 1970s, dated in a way the best themes do not. Instead of boldly going, The Animated Series theme keeps things stuck in the world of Filmation.

10. Star Trek: Picard

Star Trek: Picard wanted to move the main character away from the respected captain we knew from The Next Generation . This was an older, more contemplative man, living in disgrace from even the organization through which he built his legend. The Picard theme by Jeff Russo reflects those intentions, a soft, almost discordant piece of music that eschews the stirring confidence of the other themes.

Russo works in elements of previous Star Trek music, namely the march of the TNG theme and the tune from “The Inner Light.” But no part connects with the other, feeling like a series of fragments more than a complete whole. Although one appreciates the daring in Russo’s composition for Picard , it’s much less enjoyable than most of the other themes. A good idea in theory, but not in execution, like much of Picard itself.

9. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

So much of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is about making something new with the familiar. Spun off from the very different Discovery , Strange New Worlds puts viewers back on the Enterprise , filled with familiar characters, including Uhura, Spock, and James T. Kirk himself. The theme by Jeff Russo tries to do the same, right down to the traditional spoken word intro, this time delivered by Anson Mount as Captain Pike.

Except, unlike the rest of SNW , the theme feels like a retread of glory days instead of a new interpretation of classic ideas. The song isn’t bad, combining the marching cadence of the TOS theme with the wistful hope of the modern themes. It’s a pleasing composition, but also unsurprising. It sounds more like an update of the classic Trek theme, which isn’t bad, but is a bit underwhelming.

8. Star Trek: Lower Decks

Almost every complaint lodged against the theme for Strange New Worlds also applies to Star Trek: Lower Decks . Although far more irreverent, Lower Decks goes back to a fan-favorite point in time, during the 1990s series, and its theme reflects that setting. Chris Westlake, who worked with showrunner Mike McMahan on Solar Opposites , emulates the tone of ’90s Trek shows, especially TNG .

The propulsive tune has the sense of adventure that one wants for a good Trek theme, threaded with notes of wonder and whimsey. Some might complain that the tune doesn’t indicate the show’s comedic elements, but that’s part of the Lower Decks charm. The show pokes loving fun at Star Trek , coming from a place of deep knowledge and respect for the franchise, which the theme song reflects.

7. Star Trek: Discovery

The farther we get from the show’s first few seasons, the easier it is to see Star Trek: Discovery as the experimental, off-beat franchise entry that it is. That experimental aspect is reflected in the way the theme song from composer Jeff Russo integrates elements of the classic TOS theme, but then moves in its own direction.

Instead of just launching forward, the theme holds back. A bed of soft bass holds the theme together, giving space for playful strings. But the theme plays out in loosely connected pieces, never really coming together, even when it returns to notes of the TOS theme at the end. All of these elements signal an evolving series, one that has no one single identity—fitting for Discovery .

6. Star Trek: The Original Series

Alright, let’s just get this out of the way. The theme to Star Trek: The Original Series is iconic. There’s a reason that so many modern Trek themes quote the original. That said, there’s a reason that these themes only quote the start, the tinkling chimes that accompany the “Final Frontier” speech or the confident strings that follow.

No one quotes the rest of the theme, and there’s a reason for that. While the melody itself is pleasing and fits the exploration ideas of the show, nothing else in the song from Alexander Courage works. The vocals are cheesy and irritating, the bongos are too busy, drawing attention from the best parts of the song. Courage’s composition deserves credit for setting the standard, but no one is upset that the themes moved on from there.

5. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Many ( including folks at Den of Geek ) put Star Trek: Deep Space Nine at the top of franchise rankings. The show’s moral complexity, its vision of different people and groups trying to come together, and its embrace of concepts such as large-scale war and religion make it hard to beat as the greatest entry in Star Trek history.

However, the theme by Dennis McCarthy doesn’t really hint at these titanic stakes—even after it was revamped in later seasons. Instead, the slow, contemplative theme evokes loneliness and even stagnation. A solo trumpet drives the theme, playing over the warm strings that rise and fall away. It makes for a beautiful work, but not one that stays in the mind like others.

4. Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy is easily the most unique of the Star Trek shows. Directed at kids with an animation style that recalls the Star Wars series on Disney+, yet still a sequel to Star Trek: Voyager , Prodigy doesn’t necessarily sound like an idea that would succeed. And yet, with its team of plucky kids and fantastic stories about established characters like Janeway, Chakotay, and Wesley Crusher , Prodigy embodies the Trek ethos better than any other current show.

That unique approach is highlighted in the show’s theme, which comes from none other than Michael Giacchino. The tune owes a debt to Voyager , unsurprisingly, but there’s also a lot of his work from the Kelvin universe movies in there, too. A warm, confident melody pushes the song forward, giving way for occasional moments of reflective calm and explosive propulsion. The song reflects the excitement of the show, in which a bunch of rowdy kids follow in the footsteps of respected travelers.

3. Star Trek: Enterprise

Yes. Really. Of course, we all recoiled in disgust the first time that we heard the lyrics “faith of the heart” greeting us to Enterprise’s premiere “Broken Bow.” Why abandon the orchestral themes that have always been part of the series? And why abandon them for a terrible adult contemporary number, one written by Diane Warren for the awful Robin Williams vehicle Patch Adams ?

But something strange happens by the time you get to episode 8. You start singing along. The radio-friendly licks and obvious hooks sink in and feel, somehow, right. And when the more up-tempo version kicks in with season three, we’re all channeling our inner Russell Watson to belt out our feelings. I guess you could say it’s a long road to loving “Where My Heart Will Take Me,” but we all get there eventually.

2. Star Trek: The Next Generation

Yes, this is a cheat. The music used in Star Trek: The Next Generation first came from Jerry Goldsmith’s score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture . But, honestly, do you associate that stirring march with Kirk in his pajamas, staring at the viewscreen? Or do you picture Jean-Luc Picard and Data and Q? Of course, it’s the latter, even if we’re watching a way-too-long sequence of the saucer section of the Enterprise-D separating.

The theme is a better fit for TNG than TMP anyway because it’s all about moving forward. Goldsmith’s composition strides forward, not even pausing for a second to second guess itself. Even when it softens for a reflective middle section, the theme keeps marching ahead, boldly going, all the way to its final triumphant flourish, keeping Trek alive for the next generation and beyond.

1. Star Trek: Voyager

Star Trek: Voyager may be the least loved among the first five series, but it has the most perfect theme of the entire franchise. Jerry Goldsmith nails it, combining the forward march of TNG with the sense of wonder from TOS and the loneliness of DS9 . This is a show about a ship lost in a distant quadrant, holding to their exploration ideals while remaining confident that they’ll get home.

Those aspects combine in the central tension of the theme, with the brass punching out its main melody and soft strings rising up, adding hints of sadness. Throughout the song come occasional chimes, highlighting the hopeful moments in Voyager ‘s journey, while never forgetting the danger and sadness in their plight. It’s everything wonderful about Star Trek , all presented in one minute and 40 seconds.

PROGRAMMING

FOX has announced plans to produce an all-new-two-hour special in which a group of male celebrities will volunteer to bare all to raise awareness for prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer testing and research.

The special is titled “The Full Monty” and is inspired by the award-winning 1997 film of the same name, which sees a group of men form a male strip-tease act to raise a quick buck.

Emmy-and Golden Globe-nominated actor, comedian and producer Anthony Anderson (“We Are Family,” “75th Emmy Awards,” “Black-ish”) will rally a cast of male celebrities, including himself, Taye Diggs (“All American,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back”), Chris Jones (3x Super Bowl Champion, Kansas City Chiefs), Tyler Posey (“Teen Wolf”), Bruno Tonioli (“Dancing with the Stars”) and James Van Der Beek (“Dawson’s Creek,” “Varsity Blues”) to encourage men to get checked and strip the stigma around prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer.

During the two-hour special, Anderson will lead Diggs, Jones, Posey, Tonioli and Van Der Beek as they train and rehearse for the most revealing performance of their careers, culminating with a big strip-tease dance, choreographed by Emmy Award-winner Mandy Moore (Choreographer for “So You Think you Can Dance,” “La La Land” and Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour”), where they will bare all in front of a live audience.

The special will air on FOX on Dec. 9 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Atsuko Okatsuka’s second stand-up comedy special will premiere on Hulu this November as part of the platform’s new stand-up comedy brand it has cheekily dubbed “Hularious.”

The special will be filmed at the Disney-owned El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on Nov. 9. The show is part of Okatsuka’s newly added Los Angeles date on her 2024 Full Grown Tour, which is produced by Live Nation.

Following her HBO special “The Intruder,” Okatsuka embarked on her tour with over 200 shows in 100+ cities, 20+ countries, four continents and over 100K tickets sold.

In addition to her stand-up career, she debuted two films at the Tribeca Film Festival: “All That We Love” by Yen Tan; and “Group Therapy,” directed by Neil Berkely and produced by Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat Productions. She also wrapped the feature studio comedy “Outcome” for Apple, starring Jonah Hill and Keanu Reeves.

Hulu has yet to reveal the title of the special and its release date.

Jacoba Atlas’ documentary “The M Factor: Shredding the Silence on Menopause” premieres on PBS Oct. 17, followed by a 20-city U.S. screening tour.

Per the official logline, “‘The M Factor’ features renowned doctors, workplace advocates and leading advocates for women’s health addressing questions that have long plagued women. Women from all walks of life reveal the physical and mental anguish they live with every day. The film also sheds light on disparities faced by Black and Brown women as they assess their treatment options.”

“Every single woman will go through menopause,” said executive producers Denise Pines and Tamsen Fadal. “The neglect, ridicule, or shaming of debilitating symptoms is unacceptable and impacts more than just an individual woman’s well-being.“

“The M Factor” is produced by Women in the Room Productions and Take Flight Productions.

Fox has unveiled the guest stars for Season 2 of Dan Harmon’s mythological animated comedy “Krapopolis,” which premieres Sept. 29.

Guest stars making voice appearances in Season 2 include Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Alison Brie, Seth Rogen, Danny Pudi, Nick Kroll, Randall Park, Holmes, Sam Richardson, Paul Scheer, Brian Baumgartner, Dylan Gelula, Jason Mantzoukas, Ashley Park and Minnie Driver.
