We’re looking at the best couples in Star Trek history on Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day c oming to an end, we figured we’d wrap up our Valentine’s Day-themed Star Trek posts by looking at the best couples in Star Trek history. There really were some good ones, even if Star Trek isn’t too known for its romance stories.

We’ve already covered the couples we wish we had , and the ones we are desperate to forget , but now we’re looking at the best that Star Trek had to offer.

Like with the other two, this is in no particular order, but we do have some honorable mentions to get to first.

Honorable Mentions

Star trek: deep space nine – benjamin sisko and cassidy yates.

This was a great romance, but it doesn’t make the list for a few reasons; one Cassidy was a smuggler with ties to the Maquis, and Benjamin had her arrested over it. No one in the top three can have arrested the other. That’s a big romantic no-no. Plus, without going too deep into spoilers, their ending isn’t a happy one.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Odo and Kira

Like with Sisko and Yates, Odo and Kira were torn over one another for almost the entirety of the series. They were together for about one full season across the last six episodes of season six and all but the finale in season seven when Odo returns to his planet.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Worf and Jadzia

This was a great pairing and was wonderful to see unfold during their three seasons together but like with others on this list, there was a definitive flaw. In their case, it was their ending.

Star Trek: Voyager – Tom Paris and B’Elanna Torres

Usually, it’s the guy that is afraid of commitment but Voyager flipped that on its head with B’Elanna Torres and Tom Paris. It was a great slow build that finally saw them become a great, fully fleshed-out couple. Unfortunately their great “couple-moments” came few and far between.

Five Star Trek episodes for Valentine’s Day!

Spoiler Warning: There are minor spoilers ahead for the episodes on this list.

Love is in the air! Happy Valentine’s Day – even though 2021 promises to be the strangest in a long time. If you have a special someone to spend today with, I bet you’re wondering what to watch to put you both in the mood. And if you don’t… perhaps you’re just wondering what to watch. So without further ado, here are a few Star Trek episodes worth watching on the most lovey-dovey day of the year – or at least tangentially related to it! As always, the list is in no particular order.

Number 1: The Dauphin (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

It’s been a while since we talked about The Next Generation’ s most controversial major character: Wesley Crusher! He’s the main focus of this episode, falling in love with the ruler of a war-torn planet. In a classic case of “bad timing,” Salia and Wesley’s relationship wasn’t to be. He learned a valuable lesson about love along the way, though, and while the episode has some cute moments and some awkward ones, it manages to be distinctly “Star Trek” all the while.

Number 2: Choose Your Pain (Star Trek: Discovery)

I often call the relationship between Stamets and Dr Culber the “emotional core” of Discovery , yet looking back on the show’s 42 episodes, there are relatively few in which they are the main focus. Choose Your Pain has a lot going on, but one of the most significant points is how Hugh and Paul clash over the tardigrade – the space-dwelling lifeform that appears to be the key to making the Spore Drive work as intended. They’re able to resolve things, of course, but only when Stamets does something life-changing to himself in order to save the tardigrade’s life.

Number 3: Threshold (Star Trek: Voyager)

When we think about Tom Paris, who’s his romantic partner? B’Elanna Torres, of course. But in Threshold – widely regarded as one of Voyager’ s worst episodes – Paris and Janeway get together and even have kids! Had you forgotten about that? After passing the Warp 10 barrier and experiencing “hyper-evolution,” Paris kidnaps Janeway and flees to an uninhabited planet. The two hyper-evolve into lizards and apparently “do the nasty,” resulting in at least three offspring. The crew of Voyager opted to leave the hyper-evolved children behind when they rescued Paris and Janeway, though, and for some reason the events of Threshold were never mentioned again. I wonder why?

Number 4: Amok Time (Star Trek: The Original Series)

Amok Time is certainly one of the most iconic Star Trek episodes, having been imitated and parodied many times. It focuses on Spock and introduces us to the concept of pon farr – the Vulcan biological mating need. The Vulcans evidently practice arranged marriage, and when Spock’s betrothed chooses another man, Kirk and Spock must engage in a ritual fight to the “death.” As one of the first episodes to explore the Vulcans in depth, as well as our first visit to the planet Vulcan, Amok Time is incredibly important within the history of Star Trek. And as a love story, well there’s something kind of romantic about T’Pring choosing to escape her arranged marriage to be with someone she cares about… right?

Number 5: Change of Heart (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)

Workplace romances are bound to cause problems! After Worf arrived on the station at the beginning of Deep Space Nine’ s fourth season, he and Jadzia Dax struck up a relationship. They eventually got married in the episode You Are Cordially Invited , and continued to work closely together. In Change of Heart they’re assigned a dangerous mission to evacuate a Federation spy at the height of the Dominion War. But when Jadzia is injured, Worf is forced to choose whether to save her life or complete the mission.

So that’s it. Five somewhat Valentine’s Day-related Star Trek episodes! Try not to take it too seriously; this was just a bit of fun to mark the occasion!

On a more serious note, Valentine’s Day can be difficult. It can be a day that brings home feelings of loneliness, that we aren’t loved or even that we’re unworthy or undeserving of finding someone special. If you feel that way, listen to me: it’s bullshit. You’re a King, a Queen, or non-binary Royalty and you are amazing. If you haven’t found somebody yet, that’s okay. There’s no pressure or time limit. I know people who found love well into their seventies and eighties, and a few years ago attended the wedding of a neighbour of mine who finally was able to marry his boyfriend – at the age of 85! Just because some people manage to find their special somebody early in life doesn’t mean you have to conform to that too. One thing I wish I’d learned a lot sooner is that it’s better to be single than to be in a bad relationship! So please try not to worry or let Valentine’s Day become an excuse to feel rotten. Your time will come. Until then, I wish you a very happy Valentine’s Day – platonically, of course!

VALENTINE'S DAY SPOTLIGHT: Rebeca and Scott

It’s Valentine’s Day, and what better way to celebrate the holiday than to meet a great couple – Rebeca Isabel Aguirre and Scott Tolen -- who share a love not only for each other, but for Star Trek ? In fact, StarTrek.com first encountered them a couple of years ago at Creation Entertainment’s Official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas and then spent more time with them – hanging out at the Starbucks at the Rio, actually – during this past year’s Vegas event. It was then that we realized they’d be the perfect lovebirds to speak with for a story timed to Valentine’s Day, and so we touched base and engaged them in a joint conversation. They’re smart and funny and affectionate and make each other laugh and smile. It’s easy to forget that they both have Cerebral Palsy, as neither let’s that slow them down. Below is part one of our conversation, and visit StarTrek.com again tomorrow to read part two.

How did the two of you meet? And how long have you been together as a couple?

Rebeca: Scott and I met 11 years ago on a now defunct dating site for people with disabilities called "I Can Date." Looking back, I remember posting one of the ugliest pictures of me on the site. I got only one hit, but that "one" was the only one that mattered.

Scott: Yes, oh my gosh it was a hideous picture of her, but she seemed nice over chat and I am the kind of guy that looks at the person's soul and not their appearance. And so a few weeks after chatting online we decided to meet. I asked her many years later why she posted that awful picture. She simply answered, "because I did not want a shallow guy."

Rebeca: I got my wish, because there is nothing shallow about Scott. So, how did we meet? I remember it was a beautiful sunny day in May and we met at a local restaurant near my home in Torrance, California. Scott at the time lived in Chatsworth, California, which is far from my house. It wasn't love at first sight or fireworks bursting in the skies, but there was something about Scott that sparked an interest, but at first I wanted to be just friends.

Scott: Okay, I admit that it wasn't love at first sight, either, but when I saw her I was floored because she did not look anything like that image she had posted on the site. She was, and still is very attractive, so I asked her out to see a movie.

Rebeca: I gave him a hard time for a while because I really wasn't interested in a romantic relationship with him. In the meantime, Scott was actively seeking a romantic relationship, so he started to distance himself from me. My mother noticed that I was acting strange and she asked me what was going on with the "nice" young man I was seeing. I told her that I have not talked to him in a while and that I was not "seeing" him. Then my wise mother eyed me and, pointing at me, she said, "You are in love." I was in tears when it dawned on me that I could lose him or that I already have lost him. Consoling me, she suggested that I email him very soon.

Scott: I was frustrated during the time I put distance between myself and Rebeca. I even signed up for eHarmony.com knowing that I already found my match through Rebeca, but I was looking for romance, something that she could not offer me at the time. So, I was surprised when Rebeca emailed me out of the blue asking if I would like to go to the Abilities Expo with her. Rebeca is awesome. Once you start hanging out with her it's hard to forget her, so I said yes. We started talking and hanging out more and more, and I was happy to be just friends with her. We finally became a couple when we went to the "Land Meets the Sea," which is an adaptive sports camp for people with disabilities held every year in Long Beach, California. So, I am thrilled to say that Rebeca and I have been together as a couple 10 years this coming August, and we are planning to celebrate at the "khan" with our Star Trek family.

You both have physical challenges. What is yours, Rebeca? And what is yours, Scott?

Rebeca: We both have Cerebral Palsy (CP) because our mothers experienced complications when they gave birth.

Scott: My mother had undetected diabetes that she acquired when she was pregnant with me and this caused the umbilical cord to be severely damaged and left me with lack of oxygen.

Rebeca: Yes, lack of oxygen is one of the causes of CP as it was also the case for me. I was literally born with a bang. My mother went into labor and the doctor who delivered me had come to work under the influence of alcohol and dropped me head first into a bucket. I was born in a foreign country where there was no such thing as malpractice at the time. Well, the important thing is that I am a survivor.

Scott: I agree with Rebeca… we both are survivors and have a passion for life and making the best of the abilities we do have.

How do you help each other deal with the physical challenges?

Rebeca: Like Scott said, we are survivors and the passion that we both share for life and for each other has allowed us to complement each other. Scott's needs are mostly mobility-related and I try my best to help him navigate through this by making sure that obstacles are kept at a minimum. Whenever we go places, "accessibility" is my main concern.

Scott: While Rebeca earned her driver's license in 2006, she chooses not to drive long distances, so I do most of the driving for her. We do most of our errands together, while I deal with the traffic, she deals with as she says making sure there are minimal obstacles in my way. Rebeca also has profound hearing loss and I make sure that she carries extra hearing aid batteries just in case.

Rebeca: Yeah, I don't feel safe driving as I used to, but it was such a wonderful achievement getting my driver's license because Scott inspired and encouraged me to do so. We do help each other a lot. It is so second-nature to us that we sometimes forget how much we do for each other and how much we inspire one another to do our best in life.

Something else you have in common in addition to love and physical challenges is... Star Trek . Rebeca, how/when did you discover Trek ? And Scott, same for you.

Scott: I remember watching TOS with my father and stepmother when I was a child. Star Trek instilled in me a profound fascination for space and technology. My grandfather was an engineer contracted by Boeing and worked for NASA designing the Delta rockets that ultimately led to the space shuttle program. Yes, I take great pride in that. I also watched TNG through high school and college. I'm so glad Rebeca shares my love for Star Trek because when she told me that she is a huge fan, I just thought it was awesome to have this in common with her. Both of us had not completely seen Voyager and Enterprise , so it was great to see them together.

Rebeca: I agree with Scott about sharing our love for Star Trek . We are going through DS9 right now and we are planning to watch TOS or TNG afterwards. As for me, I remember watching TOS on a black and white television set in my aunt's grocery store in Ecuador. The episodes were dubbed in Spanish and they were considered first run-shows in the early 70's. When I immigrated to the United States, I stopped watching Star Trek until I saw " The Trouble with Tribbles " and " Trials and Tribble-ations " back-to-back while I attended college. I was hooked once more, and when my friends and I would go to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, we would always go to the Hilton to eat at Quark's Bar and check out Star Trek: The Experience . But for some odd reason we didn't go to the Star Trek conventions. I was thrilled when Scott told me he was a fan of the show, and I was happy that we had something other than our disabilities in common. I am so glad that we were able to go to Star Trek: The Experience and eat at Quark's Bar with Scott's folks; we were devastated when the attraction closed, darn it!

Star Trek Voyager’s Doctor Felt Stardom’s Ephemeral Romance

O n January 26, 2000, in the episode “Virtuoso,” The Doctor of Star Trek Voyager was introduced to a species unfamiliar with the concept of music. He eagerly showcases his operatic talents, temporarily enchanting a woman named Tincoo, portrayed by Kamala Lopez-Dawson. Although this encounter was brief, it was a memorable one.

The episode “Body and Soul” aired on November 15, 2000, depicts The Doctor projecting his consciousness into Seven of Nine’s body with the aid of her Borg implants. In Seven’s guise, The Doctor forges a connection with Jaryn (Megan Gallagher), who despises holograms. In the series finale, “Endgame,” airing on May 23, 2001, Voyager’s audience was transported years into the future, witnessing a world where the U.S.S. Voyager is back on Earth, and The Doctor luxuriates in a cosmopolitan lifestyle with his spouse, Lana (Amy Lindsay). Tragically, this storyline involves time manipulations and alternate realities, suggesting that Lana’s existence was negated when Janeway began her chronological interferences. Notably, “Voyager” outpaced “Avengers: Endgame” with both its title and a time-travelling antagonist plot.

What Star Trek: Voyager's Borg Queen Looks Like Today

As prominent "Star Trek: Voyager" antagonists go, it's hard to top the Borg Queen, the entity controlling the fearsome Borg. The Borg are responsible for some of the most pause-worthy moments on "Star Trek: The Next Generation,"  and the cyborg collective continued to antagonize the Federation long after their debut on that show. 

She made her debut in one of the best "Star Trek" movies , "Star Trek: First Contact," and "Star Trek: Picard" marks The Borg Queen's final hurrah. Nevertheless, she's arguably at her most prominent during the events of "Star Trek: Voyager." While numerous actors have played the character over time, the Borg Queen's prevalence on "Voyager" quite likely makes the two actors portraying her — Alice Krige and Susanna Thompson — the definitive versions of the cyborg villain, especially since Krige also played the character in "Star Trek: First Contact." Let's see what the actors look like today.

Alice Krige and Susanna Thompson have a long history in genre shows and films

The first Borg Queen to grace the screens was Alice Krige, who played the role in 1996's "Star Trek: First Contact" and returned in the "Star Trek: Voyager" Season 7 episode "Endgame." Due to her significant role in "First Contact," she's likely the first person people think when it comes to the Borg Queen. She's also voiced the character in various other "Star Trek"-adjacent projects, including "Star Trek: Picard," where she provides the voice of the Borg Queen in two episodes while others physically portray her. 

Apart from her "Star Trek" work, Krige has amassed a wealth of acting credits. Eagle-eyed fans may have spotted her as Eyr in "Thor: The Dark World," Christabella in 2006's "Silent Hill," and Karen Abercromby in the 2002 Christian Bale-Matthew McConaughey fantasy film "Kingdom of Fire." On the small screen, you may have seen her as Maddie on "Deadwood," Nancy Johnson on "The OA," and Haruspex Tsimani on "Carnival Row."

The second and more prominent Borg Queen of "Star Trek: Voyager" is Susanna Thompson, who portrayed the character in her other three appearances on the show. The Borg Queen marks Thompson's third appearance in the franchise, seeing as she already had two one-episode "Star Trek: The Next Generation" parts under her belt before joining "Voyager." Thompson is a familiar face for fans of "Arrow" as Moira Queen,  the mother of Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell).
