However, interest in Odisha's eclectic combination of attractions is growing because the state is an ideal destination for experiential travelers. From temples to tribal villages, Odisha has some truly unique and diverse treasures to discover. These include national parks and wildlife, unpolluted beaches, traditional music and dance, handicrafts , tribal culture, Buddhist relics, and food.

Find Military History at Barabati Fort

In the city of Cuttack, you can travel back in time to medieval India when you visit this 13th-century fort. Although only ruins of the nine-story palace remain, the Barbati Fort's gate and moat are still intact. The fort was constructed by the rulers of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty who reigned over Kalinga for 10 centuries. During Great Britain's rule over India, the fort was used to jail royalty, imprisoning both the Raja of Kujanga and the Raja of Surgaja in the 19th century.

See the Palm Leaf Manuscripts at the Odisha State Museum

If you're interested in the history of India and calligraphy, palm leaf manuscripts are a treasure best seen with your own eyes. As a writing material, the use of palm leaves dates back to the 5th century BCE. To write on the leaf, scribes would first cut the shape of the letters into the material and then add ink. The Odisha State Museum in Bhubaneswar has one of the largest collections of palm leaf manuscripts with 40,000 articles under its care. Here, you can get a close look at ancient religious texts, illustrations, and historical genealogies of past dynasties. The museum also has other galleries dedicated to archaeology, ancient weapons, and natural history.

Marvel at One of India's Largest Waterfalls

One of the major attractions of Simplipal National Park, Barehipani Falls is India's second-largest waterfall. The cascade makes its dramatic drop over two tiers in the Meghashuni Mountains. It's one of the many waterfalls you'll see on a typical tour of the park in addition to Joranda Falls, which is another one of India's tallest waterfalls. Simplial National Park is a reserve for wild tigers and elephants and is a part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves .

Admire Ancient Temples in Bhubaneshwar

Odisha's capital city, Bhubaneshwar, was once home to thousands of temples. Only a fraction of them remain but they're certainly impressive and the oldest one, Parsurameswara Temple, dates back to the 7th century. Each temple offers a unique interest, such as the Ananta Vasudeva Temple, which has the largest kitchen in the city, and the 64 Yogini Temple, one of the only four temples in India dedicated to the cult of tantra. It takes the number in its name from the 64 stone carvings of yogini goddesses.

Learn About Odisha's Handicraft Heritage

Kala Bhoomi Crafts Museum

The remarkable new Kala Bhoomi Crafts Museum in Bhubaneshwar is one of the top museums in India that showcases the country's heritage. The museum has four zones with eight galleries, each dedicated to different crafts such as terracotta work, traditional paintings, stone and wood carving, metal crafts, tribal crafts, and hand-looms. What stands out most is that it's an interactive museum where you can view the artisans at work and participate in workshops.

Meet the Artisans at Handicraft Villages

AROYBARMAN / Getty Images

Odisha excels at arts and crafts . There are two handicraft villages between Puri and Bhubaneshwar that you can visit, where the residents are all artisans: Raghurajpur and Pipili. Raghurajpur is about 20 minutes north of Puri and is renowned for its Pattachitra paintings, while Pipli is about 45 minutes south of Bhubaneshwar and specializes in colorful needleworks. Both of these villages are interesting places to interact with the artisans, see demonstrations, and buy their beautiful handicrafts.

There are even more handicraft villages within a couple of hours of Bhubaneshwar. Balakati specializes in brass metalwork and Sadeibereni village is dedicated to the craft of  dhokra —a metal casting technique using the lost wax method. Traditional ikat saris are woven at Nuapatna and Maniabandha villages and Cuttack city is the hub of Tarakasi silver filigree.

Further afield, weaving is also carried out at Berhampur in the south, and many districts in western Odisha such as Bargarh, Sonepur, and Kendupalli. Ghatagaon is a terracotta handicraft village on the way to Similipal National Park.

Catch a Sunrise Over Udayagiri in Bhubaneshwar

The motley collection of 32 caves cut into the hillside on the outskirts of Bhubaneshwar is an important archeological site dating as far back as the 2nd century BCE. The caves were originally home to Jain aesthetics. The most interesting ones can be found at Udayagiri, also known as Sunrise Hill. Even if you're not naturally an early riser, the sunrises over Udayagiri are not to be missed.

Marvel at the Konark Sun Temple

Konark is located about two hours southeast of Bhubaneshwar and an hour east of Puri, forming part of the popular Bhubaneshwar-Puri-Konark "Golden Triangle of Odisha". The main attraction is the 13th-century Sun Temple, designed to be a huge chariot for Surya the Sun God. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and architectural masterpiece. Erotic carvings similar to those on the Khajuraho temples also stand out.

Explore the Holy City of Puri

flocu / Getty Images

Puri is a seaside city about an hour and a half south of Bhubaneshwar. Its appeal lies in its holiness as one of the top spiritual destinations in India . Although the imposing Jagannath Temple is only open to Hindus, the roofs of nearby buildings offer decent views. The vicinity around the temple is intriguing too, with many small temples, shops, and an area where thousands of clay pots are stored and transported daily to cook food for the deities.

The Rath Yatra festival , which takes place in July each year, is Odisha's biggest festival. It's the only occasion when non-Hindus can get to see the temple deities. A mere glimpse of Lord Jagannath on the chariot , or touching the chariot, is considered to be very auspicious.

Take a Beach Break

Buddhadev Karmakar / Getty Images

Puri's Golden Beach was recently cleaned up and awarded environmentally-friendly Blue Flag status. However, the main stretch of the beach does get crowded and carnival-like with camel rides and snack sellers. It becomes quieter towards the lighthouse.

In the far north of the state, the tide recedes out for miles at Chandipur beach, while isolated Talasari beach is known for its red crabs. The only drawback is that accommodations and facilities aren't great, as the beaches are relatively undeveloped. In the south of Odisha near Berhampur, Gopalpur-on-Sea is a popular beach holiday destination that was a thriving seaport during British rule.

Discover Ancient Buddhist Sites

Buddhism flourished in Odisha from the 7th to 10th century. The state's Buddhist sites have only been excavated relatively recently and are largely unexplored. Located about two hours northeast of Bhubaneshwar, the sites consist of a series of monasteries, temples, shrines, stupas, and beautiful sculptures of Buddhist images. Their rural setting, among fertile hills and paddy fields, is picturesque and peaceful. The "Diamond Triangle" of Ratnagiri, Udayagiri, and Lalitagiri has the most significant and largest concentration of Buddhist remains.

Monks of the Mahima cult practice a curious blend of Buddhist and Sufi traditions at their ashram at Joranda, near Dhenkanal. The religion, Mahima Dharma, is said to have been established in the mid 19th century by Mahima Gosain as a way of rejecting Hindu religious order and high-caste Brahmanism. Poet and devotee Bhima Bhoi widely promulgated it through his compositions. The religion has no rituals or idol worship. Love and compassion for fellow beings, a classless society, a formless god, and non-violence are the main tenements.

The monks have to follow a strict life of poverty, celibacy, piety, and constant movement. They are not allowed to sleep in the same place two nights in a row or take meals twice from the same house in a day. It's possible to meet the monks at any time but ideally be at their ashram around noon or sunset when they perform their prayers. The cult's annual Joranda Mela takes place around the full moon in late January or February and features the lighting of a sacred fire.

Watch Birds Close-Up at Chilika Lake

Chilika Lake , about 90 minutes southwest of Bhubaneshwar, is Asia's largest brackish water lagoon. It's an ecological wonder that's teeming with wildlife, particularly fish, dolphins, and migratory birds from far-off lands. The lake also has many islands, including one with an isolated temple that can be accessed by boat.

Most departures are from Satapada, where you'll find the dolphins, located at the mouth of the Lake around 50 kilometers southwest of Puri. Other departures are possible from Barkul, Rambha, and Balugaon. For outstanding bird watching, head to Mangalajodi on the northern edge of Chilika Lake.

Go Boating Through the Mangroves and Spot Crocodiles

tapasbiswasphotography / Getty Images

Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary is located about three and a half hours northeast of Bhubaneshwar. It offers the thrill of seeing huge saltwater crocodiles basking on the mudflats, plus many species of birds. The main way of exploring the sanctuary is by boat through the mangroves, and it's a much quieter and more relaxed alternative to the Sundarbans in West Bengal.

Nature treks inside the forest are a highlight. If you have time, go on a day trip to pristine Ekakula Island and Garhimata, where the Olive Ridley turtles nest. Before you make plans, know that Bhitarkanika is closed from May 1 to July 31 each year for the crocodile breeding season.

Stay at the Homes of Royalty

TripSavvy / Sharell Cook

Many of Odisha's erstwhile royal families are restoring and converting their regal palaces and mansions into heritage homestays, where you'll be able to personally interact with your royal hosts and go on immersive excursions. Each palace has something different to offer.

The most striking properties are Dhenkanal Palace, Aul Palace near Bhitarkanika, and Belgadia Palace in the far north Mayurbanj district. Gajalaxmi Palace , in the middle of a reserve forest near Dhenkanal, is ideal for anyone wanting a wildlife and nature experience. Kila Dalijodi , in a rural area about an hour north of Cuttack, is unparalleled for the range of local and in-house activities available including trekking, cycling, visits to tribes and a cow shelter, art, cooking, and farming.

Sample and Learn to Cook Odia Cuisine

Odia food will delight seafood lovers with mustard-based fish and prawn curries. Dalma (spiced vegetables and lentils) is an iconic vegetarian dish. Most Odias are passionate about pakhala (a fermented rice and curd combination). Sweets such as chhena poda (roasted cottage cheesecake) and rasagola (balls of cottage cheese in sugar syrup) are very popular. The state's cuisine is generally lighter, with less spice and oil, than the ubiquitous north Indian cuisine.

Wildgrass Restaurant on VIP Road in Puri is an authentic restaurant to try Odia cuisine. Order a platter to sample a range of dishes or sign up for a cooking class. In Bhubaneshwar, head to Dalma , the Odisha Hotel, or Kanika at the Mayfair Lagoon Hotel.

Hill Stations in Odisha

The eastern Indian state of Odisha is known to have a major port, a large brackish water lagoon, one of the longest coastlines, and some great cultural hotspots in the country. However, not many know that the state has few great hill stations also. The most scenic hill station in Odisha is Daringbadi that is situated at 3000ft above the sea level in Kandhamal district, just 250 km from the capital city, Bhubaneswar and 150 km from Brahmapur Railway Station. It is known as the ‘Kashmir of Odisha’ for its lush green pine forests, occasional snowfall and beautiful valleys. The hill station has numerous scenic places such as Putudi waterfalls and Doluri River. The turmeric gardens, black pepper orchards and Belghar Sanctuary provide the best nature sightseeing. The hill station has Samaleswari temple and nearly 200 churches. The most unexplored hill station in Odisha is Chandragiri that is situated at 3000ft above the sea level in Gajapati district, about 260 km from Bhubaneswar and 80 km from Brahmapur. It is known as ‘Mini-Tibet’ as it became home to many Tibetans who arrived from Tibet in May 1963 fleeing Chinese invasion. Today it displays the grandeur of Tibetan culture and architecture with its monasteries. Your hill station tour would be incomplete without visiting the hilltops, mountain slopes, gushing rivers, and lush forests. The cultural activities and plantation activities of the Tibetans add beauty to the place. Dhenkanal is the third popular hill station and is situated 2296ft above the sea level in Dhenkanal district about 107 km from Bhubaneswar and has a railway station of its own making it a perfect weekend getaway for people staying in the capital city.

The place has several Hindu temples, including Sanischar temple, Daudeswar temple, Jaleswar Astasambhu Temple, Sidheswar Temple,Swapneswar Temple, Paschimeshwar Temple, Mahakaleshwar Temple, Naganath Temple, Ramachandi Temple, and Ashtasambhu Temple. However, the most notable one is the Kapilash temple that has 1352 stairs and is frequented by thousands of pilgrims from all over the state.  Some of the nearby tourist destinations include Mamu Bhanaja Cave, Saptasajya, Kapilasa Wildlife Sanctuary, Science Centre and Park. The next magnificient hill station is Taptapani, situated 1,800ft above the sea level in Ganjam district about 260kms from the state capital and 56kms from Brahmapur railway station. The hill station is noted for its hot water springs that is high in sulphur content and is believed to cure skin diseases. The place derived its name from ‘tapta’ and ‘pani’, which means hot water. Other than the springs, some places to visit are Kandimata Temple, deer park, Tampara lake, among others. Travelers can also visit villages of tribal communities such as Bonda, Dingara Kondh, Kutia Kondh, and Mali tribes. Though the hill station has an even temperature round the year, it is best visited during October to March. The fifth popular hill station is Mahendragiri that is perched atop a height of 4,925ft above sea level in the Gajapati district, about 245kms from Bhubaneswar and 75kms from Brahmapur. It is the second highest peak in Odisha. Lush forests surround the place and it boasts of rich flora and fauna such as spotted deer, elephants, flying squirrels, peacocks, mynahs and leopards.

2. Bhubaneshwar

Bhubaneshwar

Bhubaneshwar is famous as the temple city of India because of the presence of more than 700 temples dating back to various times in history. Apart from that, it is also a thriving city for business and one of the tourist attractions of Odisha.

This ancient city whose name translates to ‘Lord of the Universe’ attracts tourists and devotees from across the country. The temples are any history buff’s dream come true as the different temples from different eras represent the architecture of that period. Temples such as the Lingaraj Temple, Rajarani Temple, and the Parasurameshwara Temple are examples of the grandeur and splendour of different ages.  The sheer beauty of these temples is enough to mesmerize tourist and devotee alike. Cuttack

Cuttack is the second-largest city in Odisha and is also known as the cultural capital of the state. This is in no small measure due to the range of cultural activities that keep happening here. Prime among these is the Bali Yatra. This festival is a reminder of the glorious past of the city and the trade links it had with places such as Bali, Java, and Sumatra. Another notable festival is the Kite Festival held in the month of January every year. The places that should be on every tourist’s list include the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary home to the endangered Olive Ridley turtles, the prominent seaport and the beach of Paradip, the 14-century Fort of Barabati, the Mahanadi Barrage, and the temples of Singanatha and Bhattarika.

Arguably, the most famous seaport of India, Paradip as mentioned earlier has a busy international seaport and the city has amazing beaches that offer spectacular views of the areas around. The Paradip Beach itself is another place where you spend a day doing nothing and just feasting on the delightful seafood available on the beach. The famous Paradip Lassi is also known as Gaveskar Lassi. It is made out of coconut and is a must-try.

Konark

This is one of the tourist attractions that you cannot afford to miss. Home to the famous 13-century Sun Temple, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sun Temple is an architectural marvel that is unparalleled. The temple is a representation of the Sun God Surya’s chariot that is drawn by six horses. There are 24 wheels of the chariot that have different symbolic designs on them, which are rock-cut. This place is also famous for the Konark Dance Festival, which sees dancers from across India assemble at the Konark Temple and perform there. Similarly, the Sun Festival is another festival here, which attracts lots of people. Devotees offer their homage to the Sun God by taking a dip in the sea. Other notable attractions here are the Chandrabagha Beach, Archaeological Survey of India Museum, and the Astaranga Beach. The best time to visit Konark is during the winter months of September to March when the weather is pleasant. Summers are humid and sticky and should be avoided.

5. Baripada

Baripada

While the Rath Yatra in Puri might take centre stage, devotees and pilgrims know that the Rath Yatra in Baripada is not something to be overlooked. The biggest and oldest Rath Yatra in Odisha after Puri takes place here. Hence the name Dwitiya Srikhetra (Second Puri) to Baripada.

The Rath Yatra here is one with a difference as a chariot of the Goddess Subhadra is pulled only by women and huge crowds gather here for this event. Another thing unique to this region is an event that is celebrated in April to highlight the Chhau dance, a dance indigenous to this region. Do not miss out on the Bangripori “tusser” fabric while shopping in the local market here. Some of the most notable attractions here are the Simlipal National Park, Jwala Mukhi Temple, Jagganath Temple, Baripada Museum, and the Palace of Mayur Bhanj, a palace belonging to the kings of Mayurbhanj. You can visit here for the best experience between the months of September and February. This is another one of the unique places to see in Odisha .

6. Gopalpur

 Gopalpur

Once a bustling port city today this is one of the best beaches in Eastern India. This is the tourist place you head to when you want to relax and do nothing. The Gopalpur Beach is a beautiful beach whose beauty increases due to its remoteness, the lack of huge crowds there and the consequent peace and silence. The seafood here is also worth tasting as numerous shacks along the beach provide lip-smacking delights. The best time to visit this place is between the months of September and February. The sights worth visiting here are the Gopalpur Lighthouse and Chilika Lake.

7. Sambalpur

 Sambalpur

Sambalpur is an entry point to Western Odisha and is home to abundant greenery. Rivers, lush green forests, and majestic hills teeming with wildlife are some of the specialities of Sambalpur. The famous Hirakud Dam is also here in Sambalpur. As with other places to see in Odisha, temples constitute an important part of Sambalpur and lots of devotees visit the different temples here. Devi Samaleshwari is the reigning goddess here, which is also where Sambalpur gets its name from. Sambalpur is also famous for its handlooms and textile industry and the Sambalpuri sarees are renowned across India for their craftsmanship and finesse. 8. Rourkela

Rourkela

Known as the ‘steel city of Odisha’ and ‘Ispat Nagar’, Rourkela is an industrial city that was one of the first cities in India to become commercial. This was due to steel production by the Government. However, don’t be mistaken. There are many sights to see here that have nothing to do with steel. Some of these sights are Khandadhar Waterfalls, Darjing and Deoghaar and VedVyas, the meeting point of three rivers Sankha, Koel and underground Saraswati. The best time to visit Rourkela is between the months of October and March.

Dhauli

If you got the impression so far that Odisha is only famous for Hindu places of worship, you’re mistaken. The proof of that is Dhauli, which is a town 8kilometres away from Bhubaneshwar. It is located on the banks of the river Daya and is sacred to the followers of Lord Buddha. It is believed that Dhauli was the place where Emperor Ashoka reformed his character to become a peace-loving man after the battle of Kalinga. After seeing the Daya River turn red with the blood of those killed in the battle, Ashoka is said to have a change in heart and adopted Buddhism.

Today visitors can see an edict, a rock with inscriptions, talking about Ashoka’s views on war. Ashoka built many stupas and chaityas here after the war some of the remains of which can be seen even today. The Peace Pagoda here also attracts thousands of tourists every year. Other attractions here include rock-cut caves and Sadharma Vihar Monastery. The best time to visit Dhauli is between the months of October and March.

10. Bargarh

Not as famous as the other destinations on this list, but definitely no pushover, Bargarh is home to century-old temples and scenic beauty in the form of Gandhamadan, Pampanga Hills, Nrusinghanath Temple, Kedarnath Temple, and Chal Dhar Waterfall. Gandhamadan Parvat or Gandhamadan Mountain, which is mentioned in the Ramayana is located here. The best time to visit Bargarh is between the months of October and March.

11. Jeypore

Nature lovers will have a delightful time in Jeypore, which offers awe-inspiring views of rocky terrain, picturesque waterfalls, and thickly carpeted Biosphere Reserves. Deomali, the highest peak in Odisha is a popular picnic spot and is near Jeypore. Some of the other tourist attractions here are Gupteshwar Caves, Sunabeda, Deomali, Duduma Falls, Hatipathar and Jagannath Sagar. Jeypore is best experienced between the months of October and March.

12. Daringbadi

Daringbadi

So far you might be forgiven for thinking that Odisha is a place that has mostly got temples and beaches. Well, let us surprise you by telling you about Daringbadi, a hill station that lies at a height of 3000-feet. This is one of the most unique places to see in Odisha. Sun-kissed valleys drenched in dew, coffee gardens, and pine trees stand guard here. The best part about this hill-station is that you can go here at any time of the year. Wondering about the peculiar name? The place owes the origins of its names to a British office called Daring who was posted here. Soon, the place came to be known after him. More than 70 percent of this place is full of forests and thus the corresponding sights will also attract you. Some of the stellar attractions around this place are Belghar Sanctuary, Kotagarh Sanctuary, Hill Park View, waterfalls such as Daringbadi Waterfall, Badangia Waterfall, and Putudi Waterfall, the local market and turmeric gardens, coffee, and black pepper plantations.

13. Berhampur
