Foals (formed in 2005) is an English alternative and indie rock band, known for combining minimalist soundscapes with dance and new wave influences, hailing from Oxford, England.

Frontman Yannis Philippakis and drummer Jack Bevan were originally in the math rock band The Edmund Fitzgerald, before deeming it too serious and parting ways. Along with vocalist Andrew Mears, guitarist Jimmy Smith, and bassist Walter Gervers, Foals was formed in 2010. The group’s debut output was the 7” single “Try This on Your Piano/Look at My Furrows of Worry” released in 2006, after which vocalist Andrew Mears left Foals to concentrate on his other band Youthmovies. Following his departure Philippakis took the leading role, and began translating the influences of techno, Arthur Russell, The Redneck Manifesto, and the Talking Heads into their signature sound.

Foals’ debut full-length “Antidotes” was recorded in New York City with TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek and released in March 2008. Featuring cryptic themes and typically melancholy compositions, the album earned rave reviews from the majority if the musical press. Aided by the singles “Balloons”, “Cassius”, “Red Socks Pugie”, and “Olympic Airways”, the album peaked at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart.

In 2009 Foals opened for Blur on their reunion show in Hyde Park, and played a host of festivals, including T in the Park and All Tomorrow’s Parties, to test out new material. The band’s follow up album, “Total Life Forever”, appeared in 2010, led by the track “Spanish Sahara”, premiered by BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe. Once again receiving strong reviews the album was shortlisted for 2010 Mercury Prize and charted at No. 8 on the UK Albums Chart. The full-length “Holy Fire” was released in February 2013 produced by Flood and Alan Moulder. Using animal bones acquired from butcher’s shops for percussive accoutrements, the album was led by the single “My Number”, and charted at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart.

Live reviews

Mindblowing. Asskicking. No holds barred. Take no prisoners. These are the words that come to mind when I think about a Foals show.

The first time I saw Foals was only after I had just listened to their song, "Spanish Sahara". Just that one song and my mind was made up. I needed to see them. Turns out that one song was merely a comma in the string of punctuations this band is capable of creating. That song is probably the tamest one they played, and I couldn't be more grateful.

A strobe light show starts off their performance to the band members entering one by one. Then lead singer Yannis Phillippakis takes the stage, his signature black Travis Bean guitar in hand. He had a wireless setup for that guitar - a tipoff that I immediately recognized. This show was about to get insane.

They ran through a few of their hits from their first album, "Mathletics", such as "Red Socks Pugie", and "Cassius". The crowd was in absolute hysterics. Ebbing and flowing with the music, people crowd surfing and ramming into each other. The song progressed into songs off their sophomore release, "Total Life Forever", where they played "Blue Blood", the aforementioned "Spanish Sahara", and the amped-up "Two Steps, Twice".

Then mayhem. Yannis runs top speed and propels himself into the crowd (who were miraculously ready and caught him). All the while, Yannis continues playing his guitar. What happened next was a thing of beauty. Somehow, Yannis makes his way to the side of the venue and proceeds to climb up to the balcony level, and again, launches himself off into the crowd. In all my years, I've never seen someone with such a low fear of death or injury.

Since this first performance I've seen Foals a number of times and they never disappoint. Even when they were added as a last minute addition to fill in for a band that canceled for Governor's Ball 2013, they managed to win over everyone at the festival, some saying they were the highlight of the entire event. Easily one of the best live acts I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.

Without a doubt, I have never danced, jumped, and sweat so much than when I am at a Foals show. Do yourself a favor, drop any plans you might have and go see Foals. Well worth it.

Foals are one of those bands that for me get better and better with each album ‎release. I’d not seen them perform live before last year’s Leeds festival where I ‎absolutely delighted to catch them as the ‘surprise act’. ‎

Therefore when the tickets were announced for the First Direct arena in Leeds with ‎support from Everything Everything it was a no brainer to buy them. ‎

Everything Everything gave a great performance with Jonathan Higgs’s vocals ‎fitting of a large arena. Thanks to a strong setlist the audience was fully engaged ‎and set up the stage perfectly for Foals. ‎

Foals opened with Snake Oil quickly building momentum and then maintaining it ‎with Olympic Airways and My Number. Foals did a great job of mixing in some ‎slower tracks and then whipping the crowd into a frenzy by following them up with a ‎more upbeat track, this was done to perfection when Inhaler bellowed out and ‎rounded off the pre-encore set following Late Night and A Knife in the Ocean. ‎

The stage lighting effects brilliantly added to the show throughout being at their best ‎when Foals boomed out Providence.‎

Foals first encore track was London Thunder, the crowd watched on mesmerised ‎before we were sent into chaos bouncing and singing along to What Went Down ‎before Foals closed brilliantly with Two Steps, Twice.‎

Foals stepped up another level on Saturday with their performance on the arena ‎stage and it was evident why they are winning awards, filling arenas and ‎headlining festivals.‎

Many people would argue that Foals are the most exciting British guitar band currently working to date. Though this may be a bold claim, the strength of the band's latest LP 'Holy Fire' paired with the passion and aggression of their live show could be considered a more than sufficient amount of evidence.

I was incredibly lucky to see the 'Holy Fire' tour three times, and it is a show of ultimate contrasts and a level of fan dedication I have never seen before. The crowds are moshing and jumping by the introduction of instrumental number 'Prelude' and energy levels simply increase from here. The whole crowd is a swirling mess during 'Olympic Airways' as they scream 'RE-A-PPE-AR' in time with the incredible frontman Yannis Philippakis. 'My Number' evokes yet more singalong before they bring even more momentous guitar riffs for 'Providence' as Yannis launches himself into his loyal followers to carry him whilst still picking his trusty guitar strings. The venue mellows for a moment as they play the spanning, cinematic 'Spanish Sahara' which is emotionally devastating when performed live.

The cathartic, anthemic atmosphere is indescribable as the whole audience stand awaiting the recognisable melody of 'Inhaler'. It is startling to consider Foals have only released three albums as they are fast approaching legendary status.

Foals’ ‘Holy Fire’ album tour was most aptly named indeed: Foals were so on fire, they brought the house down. Foals’ latest album has been an incredible success for the indie, alternative rock band. Having only formed in 2005, the band has gone from height to height during their short but powerful career. They have now established themselves as one of the most popular indie rock bands in Britain, amassing a huge fan base during this time. Indeed, their show was packed out with young hipsters, students and teens all crowded excitedly to watch the indie fivesome perform live. They did not disappoint. Yannis Philippakis led the band through a great show, his unique voclas capturing the crowd and Jack Bevan’s superb drumming skills working the crowd up into a frenzy with his powerful motions. Foals are so phenomenal because they succeed in blending a mix of genres, combining new wave influences with minimalist soundscapes. They are a perfect blend of techno, new wave, indie and alternative rock. Songs such as ‘My Number’, which ended the night on a brilliant high and with many excited cheers, ‘Everytime’ and ‘Bad Habit’ are all extremely catchy works of pure musical genius.

I was really pleased to get tickets for this gig - the price was amazing and to receive the album as part of the price was the icing on the cake!

I was also excited by the prospect of such an intimate gig, with the 1800 person capacity. The band were fantastic as ever!!

Having said that, the venue was really disappointing, with extremely limited views due to the amount of club-themed paraphernalia hanging from the ceiling and lots of pillars which restricted most views of the stage.

It was also awkward to travel to Kingston from East London where I work, and it was equally difficult to get from the venue to Chesham at the end of the Met line where I live.

Overall I had a great time, it was just a shame about the venue and the location.

"Spring Fling" was a awesome assortment for everyone!

The line up was excellent, and The Foals shined brightly!

The venue doesn't have the best sound, it's an empty old Armoury, steel and concrete, with hardwood floors, but the price for 4 bands, especially this line up is way worth it!

Mountain At My Gate, was and is one of the best, they didn't miss a note and listening on my phone will be a guilty pleasure even way after the show!

If you get the chance, check them out.

This line up was by far the best I've seen in a smaller venue, Cage the Elephant, Silversun Pickups, The Foals, and Bear Hands! For under $40!!!!

All serious musicians, great music good times! Crowd was a varied age group, I brought my 14yr old and had a great time!

Fantastic Foals - what a way to spend a Sunday afternoon, in the company of Yannis and co.

Played Everything Not Saved part 1 in its entirety, gave us a couple of extra treats and a preview of a track from Part 2, black bull. No bull only brilliant music from a band that are on fire.

Matinee performance, great to see young Foals fans there. Well managed entry, Fat Sams a good venue. Can’t wait for them to come around again. Dundee really is the capital of cool after hosting two gigs in one day by this might band.

What can I say about Foals other than they are fantastic! I've seen them 3 times and they are definitely one of my most favourite bands.

Their music is electrifying, the laser light show amazing and Yannis, as expected, did his crowd surfing.

Most of the songs were from their most recent album "What Went Down" but there were also other songs from the previous wonderful "Holy Fire" album as well as a track from an earlier album.

The crowd seemed to relish every song - a truly enjoyable gig in every sense.

joodywoody’s profile image

Saw them first at Glastonbury a few years back but spent so much time trying to survive the mosh pit didn't know what I felt about the band. Thursday nights performance in Kingston really sorted out any uncertainty I had. One of the best live acts I have seen and an incredibly generous performance with new and old tracks. They played longer than expected so we were totally spoilt for our £11 tickets.

Foals press shot, 2022

Foals have confirmed the release date, artwork and tracklist for their upcoming seventh album, ‘Life Is Yours’.

The album’s title was revealed last month alongside the release of new single ‘2AM’. ‘Life Is Yours’ follows Foals ‘ two albums from 2019, under the ‘Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost’ banner.

Al0ngside the news that they will headline this year’s Latitude Festival in July, Foals have now confirmed that ‘Life Is Yours’ will be released on June 17 and have shared its 11-song tracklist and official artwork.

“I feel that with ‘Everything Not Saved…’ we touched upon all of the facets of our sound up until that point,” frontman Yannis Philippakis said in a statement.

“This time we wanted to find a new way to express ourselves. We wanted to refocus and do something that shared a DNA throughout the songs: a physicality, a danceability, and with energy and joyousness. It’s definitely the poppiest record we’ve ever made.”

See the artwork and tracklist for Foals’ ‘Life Is Yours’ below.

In an interview with  Rolling Stone UK  last year, Philippakis said the group’s new music will be “ready for you to party to.”

He added: “I wanted the songs to be capsules to transport people – and myself – out of the time that we were in. A lot of the new songs are set in far-flung places that are halcyon and idyllic. That’s part of the power of music, to act as a vessel for transport.

“It felt like postcards from the past for the future. I was taking shards of sun-drenched, joyous memories of being at a party somewhere, which felt so out of reach at that time, and trying to project it and manifest it into the future for when stuff reopened.”

Foals will tour Europe from April onwards, with a slew of UK dates in the diary ahead of their Latitude headline slot.

Wild horse foal euthanized after being rejected by mother

A foal in North Carolina was euthanized after it was rejected by her mother.

COROLLA, N.C. (Gray News) – A newborn foal in North Carolina had to be euthanized after it was rejected by its mother.

The Corolla Wild Horse Fund said the foal, named Elsa, was born Sunday to its mother in a wild horse herd.

Elsa was observed nursing and seen multiple times in the days after her birth. However, when staff members came across Elsa’s mother and 2-year-old sister, the newborn was not with them.

After a search, Elsa was found out on the beach with a different group about a half-mile away. She was with a mare who was being protective and trying to let her nurse, but Elsa was not getting nourishment and was unable to be left with her.

After consulting with a vet, staff members tried to grab Elsa and take her back to her mother to see if they could be reunited.

The staff members caught Elsa and got her into their truck when they noticed she was in bad shape. They conversed with the vet and discovered a witness had seen her being kicked by her mother Sunday.

It was then determined that they would not attempt to reunite Elsa with her mother and would instead bring her directly to the vet on the farm.

Elsa was tested, and the vet determined she was not successfully nursing. She also had pneumonia, was severely hydrated and was dysmature, meaning she was normal in terms of gestation age but immature in size and physical appearance. She was also found to be sick.

The Corolla Wild Horse Fund said Elsa was most likely rejected by her mother because the horse could tell she would not survive.

Due to the rejection and her health problems, the vet and staff members decided to euthanize Elsa to prevent further suffering.

She was buried at the farm next to other foals who have died over the years.

The wild horse fund said it was grateful for all of its staff and volunteers and hoped that Elsa would rest easy.

2024 U.S. Open sleeper picks to watch: Who might break out at Pinehurst

  • Follow on Twitter

Harry Higgs late last month at the Visit Knoxville Open.

Getty Images

He won three weeks ago.

And two weeks ago.

And he survived last Monday, in a seven-for-two playoff for a berth in this week’s U.S. Open.

But here’s the very, very best part about Harry Higgs , should you be looking to invest ahead of the festivities at Pinehurst No. 2 :

He’s currently around 350-1 to win.

Interesting, right?

Of course, the victories have come on the Korn Ferry Tour. And before that, he hadn’t won on any PGA Tour level since July of 2019, also on the Korn Ferry. His latest success may also just be a blip.

Or it could be something more. At the least, Higgs’ momentum is unquestioned.

“If I prepare as I know I should and I’m nice to myself,” Higgs said two weeks ago, “I can do some great things on this tour [the Korn Ferry] and I believe I can do some great things on the PGA Tour as well.”

With that, let’s continue to dig. Below, members of our staff have each made a long-shot selection to assist you with your own weekly picks , whether those are for a low-stakes office fantasy league, or (legal!) big-bucks bets with a sportsbook. It’s an enjoyable endeavor for us. Deploy it as you wish.

On to our analysis.

2024 U.S. Open sleeper picks to watch

PGA Tour golfers aren't the only ones who can make some 💰 starting next Thursday. You can too! Here are a few tips. https://t.co/uldLYRZvRh — Nick Piastowski (@nickpia) June 5, 2020

Ryan Barath

Sleeper pick: Zac Blair, +40,000. Blair has been playing pretty well recently and got into the field through sectionals. He’s not an overly long player, but Pinehurst will be playing firm and fast, and every player is going to miss a lot of greens, meaning his WAY above-average chipping and putting could help him around No. 2.

Alan Bastable

Sleeper pick: Lucas Glover, +15,000. Don’t let Glover’s U.S. Open record (11 MCs — and a  win! — in 15 starts) scare you off. He’s quietly having a steady year (just two MCs) and remains among the Tour’s best ball-strikers. Hitting greens at No. 2 is essential and that’s what Glover does best.

Adam Christensen

Sleeper pick: Aaron Rai, +15,000. The double gloves he uses for extra grip will be an advantage in the humid Southern climate, giving him a slight leg up on the competition. He’s also extremely accurate off the tee and above average in approaches and around the greens. If he can magically conjure up a good putting week, maybe he can pull off a miracle.

James Colgan

Sleeper pick: Peter Malnati, +40,000: The last time a major came to Pinehurst, Martin Kaymer won by putting EVERYTHING around those mightly turtleback greens. Malnati ranks near the top on Tour in nearly every putting statistic, and at his odds, I’ve seen worse values.

Nick Dimengo

Sleeper pick: Keegan Bradley, +8,000. It’s Keegan time. Not only is he slowly rediscovering his form — coming off a T2 finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge in May — but something just feels right about picking Bradley to win his second career major right now. Maybe it’s still the “Full Swing” effect where I’ve got a soft spot for him, but, more than anything, I like the fact that he finished T4 here a decade ago. I’m laying down the money for him to win and enthusiastically looking forward to watching him go to work.

Connor Federico

Sleeper pick: Phil Mickelson, +25,000. Lefty’s 54th birthday just so happens to fall on U.S. Open Sunday this year. If the oldest man to ever win a major is ever going to make another run at one, why not at Pinehurst, one of the most notorious short-game tests in all of golf? If Mickelson, after his past few embattled years, could finish off the career grand slam on his birthday and Father’s Day, it would go down as one of the greatest stories in the history of the sport.

Viktor Hovland and caddie Shay Knight at the Puerto Rico Open in February.

How often favorites win tournaments (and when to bet on them)

Jessica Marksbury

Sleeper pick: Justin Rose, +8,000. Quite a nice price for a former U.S. Open champ, who also showed some fine form at the PGA Championship with a T6 finish.

Zephyr Melton

Sleeper pick: Nick Dunlap, +30,000. Last summer, Dunlap had a little bit of success at Pinehurst as he won the North-South Amateur. This year, he returns to the Carolina Sand Hills a PGA Tour winner. Why not throw down a little cash on the long shot?

Nick Piastowski

Sleeper pick: Akshay Bhatia, +15,000. I’m a sucker for story lines. But Bhatia grew up near nearby Raleigh, where good friend Grayson Murray also grew up. I’d also like to use this space to toss out Harry Higgs, who’s hotter than anyone and is listed around 350-1.

Sleeper pick: Tiger Woods, +15,000. Of course, he’s not the force he once was. But he’s still Tiger Freakin’ Woods, listed on your betting board at 150-1.

Sean Zak

Sleeper pick: Alex Noren, +8,000. People have been sleeping on Noren all year long. He may not win at Pinehurst, but he’d be a very juicy top-10 bet.

Josh Berhow

Sleeper pick: Tom Hoge, +15,000. He hits a lot of greens and is one of the best putters on Tour from mid-range distance. I give him the slight edge over my backup sleeper pick, Corey Conners.

Groveland Lakota sanctuary saves unwanted and mistreated horses

GROVELAND, Fla. — Florida is the  third-largest equine state  in the country, with 385,000 horses.

What may surprise you is how many owners abandon their horses each year.

One special place in Groveland helps give unwanted and abused horses a new lease on life.

What You Need To Know

Thousands of horses live in florida and are used for recreation and competition but many horses around the state are abused and mistreated and are given up by their owners the  sanctuary at lakota farms in groveland  rescues horses and provides them a new home guests can visit and tour the farm and interact with horses.

“Basically, we are saving whatever horses we can from horrific situations. Kill pens, abuse, gun shots, spears, it’s just endless,” said Bob McErlean, owner of The Sanctuary at Lakota Farms.

McErlean started the rescue by accident when someone asked him if he would take in an animal for which the person could no longer care.

The sanctuary grew from there and is currently home to 80 horses, all with a different story and needing a permanent home.

“I wish I had 500 more acres, 50 more barns and an endless bank account," McErlean said. "And then I would save every animal I possibly could.”

According to the horse rescuer, it costs the nonprofit $50,000 a month to keep the operation going.

Most of the animals that come to the farm need additional veterinary care and rehabilitation.

Kambrie Warner works for the facility and performs many of the rescues, picking up horses that owners no longer want or can care for.

Most recently, Warner traveled to Apopka, where an 83-year-old woman with health issues could no longer care for her mule horse.

“It’s got some horse in it, a little bit of donkey,” Warner said.

Warner loaded the animal into a trailer and escorted the 20-year-old horse back to the sanctuary.

“You know, he’s not current on any vaccines. He’s not current on any of his blood work," Warner said. "His feet have not been done since 2016.”

McErlean said he fields plenty of calls each week from people who can no longer take care of their horse but knows he can’t rescue all the horses.

“I wish I could save them all. It’s sad," he said. "But we work hard to save as many as we can.”

McErlean is happy to give the horses a second chance at life.

Tours of the sanctuary are available to the public, with a reservation required over the phone.

Those who have a love for animals and want to volunteer time working on the farm are encouraged to call  The Sanctuary at Lakota Farms  in Groveland at 786-521-2202.

2024 U.S. Open one and done picks, strategy, field, sleepers: Golf predictions, expert PGA betting advice

T he third major of the year is on tap this week, with the 2024 U.S. Open set to get underway on Thursday at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in North Carolina. This will be the fourth time, and first since 2014, that Pinehurst No. 2 has hosted the U.S. Open. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the 11-4 betting favorite in the latest 2024 U.S. Open odds. Other top contenders in the 2024 U.S. Open field include Rory McIlroy (10-1), Xander Schauffele (10-1), Bryson DeChambeau (10-1), Viktor Hovland (12-1), Ludvig Aberg (14-1) and Collin Morikawa (14-1). The 2024 U.S. Open purse is $20 million, with the winner's share coming in at $3.9 million. The winner will also earn 750 FedEx Cup points.

With a massive purse on the line this late in the season, it's imperative to nail your 2024 U.S. Open One and Done picks this week. Should you back one of the favorites like Scheffler or Schauffele? Or should you target a longshot like Hideki Matsuyama (35-1) or Will Zalatoris (55-1)? Before locking in your 2024 U.S. Open one and done picks,  you need to see what SportsLine DFS pro and PGA expert Mike McClure has to say .

The One and Done format is growing in popularity. It has several noticeable similarities to NFL Survivor pools, with the main difference being entries are not eliminated with a bad week. Players pick one golfer per week and earn points based on their selected golfer's prize money for that tournament. Golfers can only be used once per season, and the point format makes nailing majors, signature events, and big money tournaments critical.

McClure is a DFS legend with over $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA picks dating back to the PGA Tour restart in June of 2020. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his golf picks.

McClure has been on fire with his One and Done picks in 2024. At The American Express he backed Justin Thomas, who finished in third place and took home $635,600. At the Genesis Invitational, McClure tabbed Patrick Cantlay, who finished in fourth place at the signature event, as his top OAD pick. At the Cognizant Classic, McClure's top one and done pick, Min Woo Lee, finished in a tie for second place. Finally, at the Arnold Palmer Invitation, another signature event, McClure recommended using Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris. The Result: Scheffler won the event by five strokes, and Zalatoris finished in fourth place.

His hot steak continued at the Players Championship, where McClure again recommended using Scheffler (if was still available) and Xander Schauffele. Both players were in contention until the end, with Scheffler coming out with the win and Schauffele finishing in second place. Then, at the Valspar Championship, McClure listed Cameron Young, who finished in second place, as his top OAD pick.

More recently, at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, McClure recommended using 50-1 longshot Alex Noren in One and Done pools. Noren would go on to be in contention until the end, before finishing in third place, two strokes off the lead. And at the PGA Championship, McClure targeted Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa, who finished in third and fourth places, respectively. He targeted Morikawa again at the Memorial Tournament, where Morikawa finished second.

Now, McClure has his sights on the 2024 U.S. Open and just revealed his optimal One and Done picks. They are a must-see for any player looking for an edge in their One and Done pool. You can only see McClure's U.S. Open 2024 one and done picks at SportsLine .

Top 2024 U.S. Open One and Done picks

One of McClure's top one and done picks this week at Pinehurst is Rory McIlroy. The 35-year-old is one of the most talented and accomplished players in the 2024 U.S. Open field and has finished no worse than 15th place in his last five starts. McIlroy has four career major championships, including the 2011 US Open at Congressional Country Club.

McIlory is currently ranked No. 3 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He notched an outright win at the Wells Fargo Championship, and then won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans where he teamed up with Shane Lowry. McIlroy enters the week ranked third on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (1.662), fourth in strokes gained tee-to-green (1.360), and fifth in strokes gained off-the-tee (0.799).  You can see who else to back at SportsLine .

How to make U.S. Open 2024 One and Done picks

McClure is also targeting another golfer for his 2024 U.S. Open one and done picks who has a long track record of success against elite competition. This multiple time PGA Tour winner has the ability to win any tournament he enters, and is one of the most talented golfers in this field. You can find out who it is, and check out all of McClure's U.S. Open one and done picks at SportsLine .

Who wins the the US Open 2024, and which golfers should you target for your one and done picks this week at Pinehurst? Visit SportsLine now to get Mike McClure's U.S. Open 2024 one and done picks, all from the DFS pro who has nailed six outright winners in 2024 , and find out.
