I Regret To Inform You That The Grand Tour 's French Special Is Very Good

The trio asks the biggest question in automotive history: "what's the matter with the french".

For many folks, the Top Gear and The Grand Tour trio of Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond are the last word in automotive content and humor. For me, it has been the trio that my husband has insisted upon making me watch (ugh) while also telling me I should be more like Jeremy Clarkson (no). However, I regret to inform everyone that The Grand Tour ’s new special about French cars, “Carnage à Trois,” is very good.

Related Content

French cars have historically been an enigma, and the special opens with Clarkson posing the question the crew would aim to answer in the episode: “What’s the matter with the French?” It is an admirable goal to undertake in a single special, and it was extremely good.

That’s because it combined many of my favorite things: France, making fun of the French, awful cars, and a delightful sense of humor that culminates in launching a Citroën C3 Pluriel over the Cliffs of Dover and back to its homeland.

My husband pointed out that a large part of this episode felt scripted, but I thought it was well done. There’s one moment where Richard Hammond gets behind the wheel of a propeller-powered car and the entire crew runs off behind a fence, that was particularly egregious, but it was still an exceptional moment of humor — especially since it’s compounded by Hammond with several later crashes. There’s another where Clarkson’s car is shown rolling down a hill overlaid with his grunts, as if he’s behind the wheel when it’s quite clear he’s not. But it’s a slapstick-style comedy that works quite well for these three.

A large part of this episode focuses on the fact that the trio posit French cars are designed to be destroyed. No one in France ever sells their cars; they drive them until they need to be scrapped, since everyone just bumps into each other. This is something Hammond illustrates by parallel parking a car in between two cars that he needs to shove out of the way with his bumpers and that May illustrates by sledge-hammering some space into his trunk to fit around a dishwasher.

The trio also illustrates the durability of these French cars by off-roading three family vehicles. Arguably the highlight of the episode comes as Hammond tries to overtake his compatriots on this rutted, one-lane path, crashing into both of them and ultimately tipping his own car onto the side. Somehow, the massive catapult only serves as the cherry on top of an already-excellent cake.

The special is available on Amazon Prime, and it’s worth enjoying with a holiday beverage of your choice — even if this trio is normally not your cup of tea.

The Grand Tour's "Carnage a Trois" Episode Falls Largely Flat

Corey Lewis

Before you read any further, be advised this article contains spoilers of the episode. You’ve been warned!

Like “Lochdown,” the French installment of The Grand Tour starts with a simple question the trio of presenters intend to answer over the next hour and five-ish minutes. This time the inquiry is “What is the matter with the French?” Cue the mimes and baguettes, because you’re in for a lot of very stereotypical jokes about France and French people, none of which will be new or funny to you if you’re over the age of 15. Viewers see some shots of James and Richard pretending to build a catapult for no reason in particular, and Clarkson talks about unusual French laws that have nothing to do with cars.

i the grand tour s i carnage a trois episode falls largely flat

The car portion of the light entertainment hour starts out promising enough, as the presenters show up with the voitures they’ve purchased. Clarkson selects a Citroën CX Safari (wagon), just like he did on the old Top Gear episode (S15, E4) where he turned one into a motorhome. Hammond goes sporty and selects the three-seater Matra Murena, useful for the French man who has a wife and a mistress. May goes for a Renault Avantime that’s the exact same color as the one Top Gear turned into a track car (S12, E3). With three interesting French cars selected, the hosts proceed to give zero detail about the age, mileage, price, or condition of their vehicles. The trio doesn’t look or comment on one another’s choices at all, in fact. It all feels very rushed.

i the grand tour s i carnage a trois episode falls largely flat

We head straight into the second segment, a brief history of a handful of French automobiles highlighting quirky and backward designs. Interesting here is something called the Helicar, a 1930s-looking design driven by a front-mounted propeller. Hammond drives it, as the other two presenters move on to quirky Renaults and the 2CV. A 2CV is destroyed by being dropped from a helicopter, because that’s a thing to do. At around the 15-minute mark, hopes are high for more interesting information on French cars. The Helicar was very obscure and very interesting.

But instead, it’s on to more stereotypes about how the French have a general disregard for their cars’ intended use, cargo capacity, how to park, how to be practical, and how to drive. It’s a terrible segment that’s light on entertainment, high on senseless car damage, and that’s it.

“Looking after a car is disgusting [in France],” declares Clarkson. Ready for some offensive pretend French accents?

i the grand tour s i carnage a trois episode falls largely flat

Moving on, there’s an off-road challenge: Three French family cars asked to go much further off the pavement than they were designed to. Clarkson has a very charming Citroën Berlingo, Hammond is in the Renault Scenic he banged up in the prior segment, and May’s driving the same Peugeot 407 he just broke by slamming a dishwasher into the trunk. French people don’t wash their cars by the way, but they did invent rallying. The off-roading segment sees all three cars entirely destroyed, flipped over intentionally or similar, and goes on a while.

i the grand tour s i carnage a trois episode falls largely flat

At the 28-minute mark, the hosts return to the French cars they purchased and highlight interesting and quirky features. It would’ve been better to hear the rationales and interesting nature of the cars at first sight, but we’re stretching our material as thin as possible this episode. After a brief driving segment of under two minutes, it’s back to the discussion of French laws (this time with regard to driving, at least). French people don’t use roundabouts properly, by the way. There’s a convenient man standing at the roundabout as Hammond blocks traffic and shouts obscenities at him. French people like baguettes and eat large sandwiches, you know.

i the grand tour s i carnage a trois episode falls largely flat

The team heads to the familiar Millbrook Proving Ground and its Belgian pavers to show how the old CX is much softer in its suspension setup than a newer BMW 5-Series wagon. Said 5-Series is destroyed because it’s too rough to defuse a bomb in the cargo area, or whatever. French people don’t like government intervention, and they eat a lot of cheese.

Next up is a pretend rally race of some hot French hatchbacks. Cars are decorated in the Top Gear tradition with fake sponsored liveries. When doors are open the sponsors say Arse Biscuits or Le Balls, and other mature humor for adult people. All the hosts choose a hatchback but it doesn’t really matter which, because the race immediately ends for a lunch break of snails and wine. At 47 minutes in, one begins to wonder if this episode will make any points at all. The race continues after lunch but is stopped again because of a workers’ strike at the track. Fun! Eight minutes later the race is over, and the Citroën Saxo won it, driven by the show’s racing driver, Abbie Eaton.

The tone changes for the penultimate segment of the show, as Clarkson and Hammond explore the elegance and excellence of the Citroën SM. The segment is beautifully filmed and scored, and our hosts convey actual information about an interesting car. They declare the SM the best French car of all time. It might break down a lot, but it’s so stunning to look at it doesn’t matter.

The conclusion is a quick one and comes suddenly. Despite all the automotive quirks and cultural characteristics, there’s not a lot wrong with the French. That might’ve been a nice place to end, but there are nine more minutes to fill. Time to destroy a Citroën C3 Pluriel because it has an annoying roof arrangement. Enter catapult and the White Cliffs of Dover. The C3 is catapulted over the English Channel and lands on a house in France. What of the host’s three cars? No idea, they’re not shown again.

“Carnage a Trois” is not quite as bad as “A Massive Hunt,” but it comes close. For a special episode of a show that releases only a handful of episodes a year, there wasn’t much to recommend it. It was sort of like the history of Peugeot segment from Top Gear (S22, E5). But where that piece went on for eight minutes, this had nine times longer to fill. Without an adventure to go on, it was more like a Grand Tour episode from prior seasons. One loose narrative with different clips here and there. Beautifully filmed, as always.

But that segmentation format was what the show was supposed to leave behind. In exchange for dropping from 12 or 14 episodes a year to two , adventure and film-like content was promised. That didn’t happen here. And I’m not ignoring the masked COVID elephant in the room: Old Top Gear made plenty of great episodes (also an hour-long) within the confines of Great Britain. The majority of this special was incredibly boring.

Sort of leaves me thinking the trio is struggling for content. If there’s no adventure left and the rarely-released specials consist of strung-together segments, we’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel. For their part, the hosts have proclaimed it’s a new type of special. May said , “It’s the first time we’ve done a special like that ever, not going from one place to another place: We’re simply driving around in order to investigate the subject. We might have stumbled across a fantastic original idea without us realising it!”

So they made a special that’s an all-original new idea for a special because it’s in the format of how their show (and Top Gear before it) used to be. Brilliant.

Interested in lots of cars and their various historical contexts. Started writing articles for TTAC in late 2016, when my first posts were QOTDs. From there I started a few new series like Rare Rides, Buy/Drive/Burn, Abandoned History, and most recently Rare Rides Icons. Operating from a home base in Cincinnati, Ohio, a relative auto journalist dead zone. Many of my articles are prompted by something I'll see on social media that sparks my interest and causes me to research. Finding articles and information from the early days of the internet and beyond that covers the little details lost to time: trim packages, color and wheel choices, interior fabrics. Beyond those, I'm fascinated by automotive industry experiments, both failures and successes. Lately I've taken an interest in AI, and generating "what if" type images for car models long dead. Reincarnating a modern Toyota Paseo, Lincoln Mark IX, or Isuzu Trooper through a text prompt is fun. Fun to post them on Twitter too, and watch people overreact. To that end, the social media I use most is Twitter, @CoreyLewis86. I also contribute pieces for Forbes Wheels and Forbes Home.

Don't mean to be rude, but there wasn't a convenient Brit' at the roundabout in Paris. They never left Britain for this episode. Anyway, I thought it was slightly better Lochdown, but still not nearly as fun or as interesting as previous adventures. And what was all that business of James hiding under a tablecloth? James used to be my favourite of the trio, but after watching the way he interacts with his crew and director on Oh Cook! and Our Man In... I've come to the conclusion he can be quite unpleasant.

  • See 1 previous

Corey Lewis

Duhhhh I should have realized that. Corrected! The tablecloth thing was a reference to a (rare?) French cuisine that is eating a whole baby bird. The birds are kept in a dark box so they think it's night time and gorge themselves on food. Then they're lightly killed and... there's your meal. I don't know the name of it.

JD Jones

Where did you see James being rude? I haven’t watched wither of his new shows yet but I can’t imagine him being an unpleasant person to be around.

Boxermojo

I always enjoy watching Clarkson going on about "what is the matter with the French," particularly when discussing cars, when his own country basically has no domestic auto industry, having lost it to Germany and all their former colonial subjects after decades of building nothing but increasingly boring, unreliable cars. It seems odd to be so smug about French cars when your own industry died with the flatulent whimper of the Rover 75 and Reliant. They do truly love picking on mass-market Renaults, Citroëns, and Peugeots, but never seem to put everyday British cars through the same paces…because there aren't any mass-market British cars, unless you want to count that little BMW that looks sort of like a MINI. Funny thing, that. Meanwhile, I climbed into my "bloody minded" thirty-seven-year-old Citroën 2CV last month and drove without incident from Baltimore to Savannah and back and with a smile on my face the whole time. Guess I'll have to go on with Clarkson wondering what's the matter with me. Whatever will I do?

I like the Rover 75 btw.

What Happened To Count's Kustoms?

The most expensive sleeper car in 2024, the imminent return of the toyota celica in a post-supra market.

We are just days away from the next The Grand Tour special, which this time takes the name Eurocrash. Jeremy Clarkson , James May and Richard Hammond look to be gearing up for one of their most epic adventures yet. They take a trip through Central Europe in three very unusual cars and take part in their usual array of challenges. Amazon recently unveiled the trailer for the new special, showcasing some of the challenges facing the three presenters.

Soviet era F1, archers shooting at their cars and making sure their vehicles last the trip are just some of the things we can expect from the special. The special will launch globally on Amazon Prime on June 16th.

RELATED: How The Grand Tour Shaped Modern Car Culture And Enthusiasts Of Today

The Three Cars That Feature In The Grand Tour: Eurocrash Special

The three presenters use an interesting array of cars in the adventure. Hammond is set to drive the Chevrolet SSR, a retro-styled pickup truck brought out by Chevrolet in the mid-2000s. Under the hood is a 3.5-liter Vortec with 300 hp, which was upgraded to an LS2 V8 with 390 hp in 2005. The SSR is a quite forgettable model for Chevrolet . It proved to be much slower than General Motors had hoped for despite having nearly 400 hp. Reportedly, the weight of the SSR was one reason the pickup truck fared so badly, as was the cramped nature of the cabin.

Mitsuoka Le-Seyde Engine Specs

Clarkson meanwhile is driving an ugly yet incredibly rare car . This is the Mitsuoka Le-Seyde. It is a Japanese car based on the Nissan Silvia S13, and only 500 units of the Le-Seyde were ever made. The company claimed that all 500 units sold out within four days of them going on sale. And it's styling resembles that of the Zimmer Golden Sprint with the expected modern refinements. The car has a 1.8-liter CA18DE engine under the hood. The same that you would find in the Silvia S13 up to mid-1990s, and the Le-Seyde is certainly one of the more unusual cars for the trio to drive.

May meanwhile is driving a diminutive Crosley Convertible. It was built by the small American manufacturer Crosley, who specialized in subcompact cars . The company would produce a wide range of vehicles, but we aren’t 100 percent certain yet which model May is driving. It looks like it could be a convertible Crosley CC Four built from 1946 to 1948. But May will no doubt explain exactly what it is in the opening segments of the show. From the trailer, it looks like May is set to have a deeply uncomfortable ride in the Crosley.

Where The Grand Tour Eurocrash Is Located

The grand tour eurocrash location summary.

  • Behind the Iron Curtain
  • Tor Poznan racetrack
  • Krakow Wax Museum
  • The Westerplatte
  • Cold War Airfield

The new The Grand Tour special will take us on an epic 1,400-mile road trip through Central Europe, in what used to be behind the iron curtain of the Soviet Union. This includes taking in the sights in Poland, and sampling the Soviet version of Formula 1 . Central Europe was seen as an unlikely destination for a Road Trip, but the trio have proven people wrong according to various insiders. Hammond looks to bin his old race car during their track day at a Polish racetrack.

Spy footage of the trio on the trip and sources have said that the three may retrace the early routes of WWII as part of the trip. They were spotted in the Dluga Streets of Gdańsk as well as in the shipyard and port areas, and in the Westerplatte as well. This is the area in which the first shot of WWII was allegedly fired. The trailer also shows an old airfield full of Soviet era fighter and bomber planes. Hinting at a trip to an old Cold War airfield. A trip to the wax museum in Kraków is another of the locations the three visit. Here, the trailer reveals an amusing waxwork of 1992 Formula 1 World Champion Nigel Mansell that the three promptly take from the museum. A possible hint at the reports that they recruit a famous racing driver on their journey.

The Challenges The Grand Tour Presenters Will Face

There have been hints at some of the challenges the three presenters will face during their trip. Archers look to use their cars as target practice in one of the events, while there is allegedly a Fast and Furious climax to the show. But the trailer leaves few hints to that. Driving their three cars into the back of an old Soviet era cargo aircraft may be how the adventure ends. And it’s a prospect that leaves May slightly terrified at the start of the trailer.

One of the most exciting additions to the show looks to be the Praga Bohema which May looks to be throwing around a racetrack. With Praga based in Prague in the Czech Republic, it hints at the country being a destination for the three. The country is located in Central Europe and was formerly a part of the Soviet Union. Clarkson is also seen driving a classic open-top racer, while May apparently takes a flight in the radical AirCar from an airfield in Piešťany, Slovakia. It's likely there are a lot more locations and adventures that the trailer or reports haven’t yet revealed.

The Future Of The Grand Tour Remains A Talking Point

Away from the upcoming special, the future of the show remains a talking point . After Clarkson’s article earlier in 2023 about Meghan Markle, there was a lot of furor. And it was speculated that Amazon had decided to conclude filming of the show after the next batch of specials. The next of which recently wrapped up filming in Mauritania. But May suggested that it was all nonsense, and the three would simply decide to end things when they felt like it. Perhaps at the end of their current contract.

May would say “I mean, some people have said we’ve been canceled. But really we’re getting quite close to the end of our contract, but we didn’t really have any particular plans to keep going because we’re all really just getting a bit old. It might be time to let someone else have a crack at it.” He went on to add that, contrary to media reports, “No one has told us to go away. It’s reaching its natural end, like parties do. There comes a point at 4am when it is over.”

Fans of the show will be relieved to hear that it looks like the three will be allowed to end things when they feel like it. So there is a hope of further specials in the years to come, and we should get at least a couple more following the Mauritania adventure. For now, though, we should savor what we have of the three and look forward to the upcoming special which promises to be an absolute classic .
