The Residents Cancel ‘Dog Stab!’ 50th-Anniversary Tour

By Claire Shaffer

Claire Shaffer

UPDATE (8/23): The Residents have canceled their Dog Stab! 50th-Anniversary Tour due to continued concerns about the spread of Covid-19 cases from the Delta variant. While the bulk of shows will be axed, the band will keep three gigs in California: September 15th at the Regent Theater in Los Angeles, September 17th at the Castro in San Francisco, and September 18th at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz.

In a statement, the Residents said: “What is real? Disappointment is real. And the Covid pandemic ravaging our culture is real. The Residents are real, too, in a misty, man-behind-the-curtain way. And the joy that an artist or musician brings to their supporters is also real but so is the apprehension one feels when that excitement is replaced by anxiety and dread, anxiety in the form of responsibility to one’s group and those they come in contact with. Disappointment is a bitter pill and The Residents share in the sorrow that goes with the acrid gulp, but artists have resources to deal with frustration and failure — they create! And they are creating… please stay tuned. As someone who lives in land not far from The Residents’ fog shrouded castle on a hill once said, ‘Tomorrow is another day!’ Thanks for your love and support… and GET VACCINATED!!!”

The Residents will be hitting the road for their Dog Stab! 50th-Anniversary Tour, kicking off August 19th at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon. The tour will run for 22 dates with stops in major cities throughout the U.S. and Canada and will conclude with a hometown show at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre. See tickets online here .

Each night on the 50th-anniversary tour, the avant-garde band will perform tracks from their latest album Metal, Meat & Bone , as well as revisit songs from their 1978 seven-inch Duck Stab EP and their 1976 album The Third Reich ‘n’ Roll .

It’s already been a big year of anniversaries for the band: Last month, the Residents debuted a special new performance , Duck Stab! Alive! , to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the long-running alternative variety/music show,  Night Flight . The performance was directed by video artist John Sanborn, who has regularly collaborated with the Residents since the Nineties. In 2020, prior to the pandemic, the band staged their 1988 concept album,  God in Three Persons , live for the first time at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Dog Stab! was announced in November 2019 and intended to begin in April 2020 with dates in America and Canada. Following the global spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, these dates were postponed in March 2020, eventually being rescheduled to April and May 2021. As the pandemic continued to rage into 2021, these dates were again postponed. The tour was then expected to begin on August 19th 2021 with a show at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon; however, a week before the show it was announced that almost all dates on the North American leg of the tour would be cancelled. [1]

The Dog Stab! tour ultimately took place as a mini-tour of three shows, beginning at the Regent in Los Angeles on September 15th 2021, and continuing for the last two remaining American dates. The remainder of the tour, now retitled Faceless Forever and focusing on the group's 50th Anniversary, began in Europe and the United Kingdom in January and February 2023, concluding with three shows at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco from April 17th through 19th 2023.

History [ ]

First announcement and postponement [ ].

The Residents ' Dog Stab! tour was first announced on November 21st 2019, with dates in America and Canada in April and May 2020. The tour was designed to promote the release of the group's then-upcoming studio album Metal, Meat & Bone , a cover album devoted to the songs of the obscure Louisiana blues singer Alvin "Dyin' Dog" Snow . This early version of the show would have also featured a number of selected songs from the 1978 album Duck Stab!/Buster & Glen . [2]

Beginning in late 2019, the COVID-19 coronavirus began to spread across the world at an alarming rate, being officially declared a global pandemic in March 2020. For this reason, the planned Dog Stab! tour dates were postponed until further notice, on Friday the 13th of March, only a month before the tour was expected to begin. At this time, the group were planning to commence a European leg of the tour in January and February 2021. [3]

Second announcement and postponement [ ]

On April 1st 2020, rescheduled American and Canadian dates were announced for April and May 2021. [4] No European dates were announced for January or February, as the pandemic continued to spread across Europe into the beginning of 2021.

The continuing pandemic in America ultimately caused the second run of dates to be cancelled in April 2021, only a week before the tour was scheduled to begin. A third run of dates was announced at the same time; the American tour dates were now rescheduled to take place in August and September 2021. A second leg of European tour dates were announced in May, scheduled to take place in January and February 2022.

Further development and Duck Stab! Alive! [ ]

After the repeated postponements and delays, the start of the tour had been pushed so close to The Residents ' 50th Anniversary in 2022 that it was decided the show would evolve in order to spotlight this as a theme. To this end, the show was split into halves dedicated to Metal, Meat & Bone and Duck Stab! , with an added encore featuring material from the 1976 album The Third Reich 'n Roll , [5] designed to further emphasize the "50th Anniversary" aspect of the show. [6]

With these changes to the set list, the show had changed so substantially from its original concept that, had it originally been conceived as such, it likely would not have been titled "Dog Stab!", but since a great deal of promotional material had already been created and released, it was decided to continue the tour using this title. [6]

The Residents premiered the Duck Stab! portion of the show in June 2021, with the airing of the live-in-the-studio TV special Duck Stab Alive! on the streaming platform Night Flight Plus . Homer Flynn of The Cryptic Corporation confirmed in September 2021 that the material featured in Duck Stab Alive! represented half of the Dog Stab! set list. [7]

Cancellation of American tour [ ]

On August 11th 2021, fans who had purchased tickets to a number of shows on the tour's American leg were notified that the tour would be cancelled. Ticketholders to the Lincoln Hall show received an email notifying them of the cancellation and forthcoming refund of their ticket costs, which included a short message from The Residents explaining the cancellation:

"We have almost gotten used to cancelling or postponing tours these days, which doesn't make this any easier. But as the subject line suggests it is with great regret to inform you that we have to cancel the Residents tour. There are a number of reasons, but what really put the nail in the coffin is that we were not able to get one of the band members (who lives in the Netherlands) into the country in time due to NIE and visa protocol." [1]

Shortly thereafter, the cancellation of all but the last three shows on the North American tour was confirmed through messages posted on the group's official website . [8] [9] [10]

First shows and further delays [ ]

The Residents finally kicked off the Dog Stab! tour at the Regent Theater in Los Angeles on September 15th 2021. The truncated American leg of the tour continued with a second show at the Castro in San Francisco on the 17th, and concluded with a third show at the Rio in Santa Cruz on the 18th.

The tour was then expected to continue in January and February 2022 with a string of dates across Europe and the United Kingdom. In December 2021, however, it was announced that this leg of the tour had been postponed by 12 months due to increasing COVID restrictions. [11] Most dates on the leg were then rescheduled to take place in January and February 2023.

In February 2022, Homer Flynn of The Cryptic Corporation stated that the repeated delays and cancellations of the Dog Stab! tour had impacted the company financially. [12]

Faceless Forever - 50th Anniversary Dog Stab Tour [ ]

Over the period of time that the Dog Stab! tour was delayed, the group further developed the show, and also came closer to their 50th Anniversary. By the time the tour resumed in October 2022 with a preview performance at the Mill Valley Film Festival , it had been completely redesigned as a retrospective without particular focus on Metal, Meat & Bone , Duck Stab!/Buster & Glen or The Third Reich 'n Roll .

The retooled tour, now titled Faceless Forever (with a subtitle - "50th Anniversary Dog Stab Tour" - noting the new show's origins in the earlier, cancelled tour), resumed in Europe and the United Kingdom in January and February 2023, concluding in April with three shows at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. The tour was preceded by a "secret" 50th Anniversary show at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music on January 14th, featuring a unique set list and a number of guest appearances from artists including drummer Josh Freese , Les Claypool of Primus , and David J of Bauhaus.

During the February performance of this cult group in the Czech Republic, the celebration of its round will also be symbolically linked with the final year of the Archa Theatre, which first presented the band here at the beginning of its existence in the 1990s and for which the members created the production The Residents' Freak Show Live / Obludárium . Fans will also be able to see The Residents' first feature film called Triple Trouble before the start of the concert at Archa. Tickets are on sale in the GoOut network. The concert is organized by the Liver Music agency and the Archa Theatre as part of the Prague International Bluenight series.

It is no coincidence that the concert will take place in the Archa Theatre in Prague, for which The Residents created the production The Residents' Freak Show Live / Obludárium , which premiered on November 1, 1995 and was subsequently reenacted throughout the month. "The Residents belong without a doubt to the spiritual twins of the Archa Theatre. Not only their mysterious identity, but mainly their uncompromisingness and their sense of harsh humor caused their popularity in our country. The Residents are still inspiring today. It is only natural that their concert will become part of the final season of the Archa Theatre called The Cornerstones of the Future ," explains the director of the Archa Theatre Ondřej Hrab.

GRAPHIC: Woman attacked by man’s dog while giving him money, family says

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC/Gray News) - A Lousiana woman is recovering in the hospital after she was mauled by a man’s dog while giving him some money, according to her daughters.

What began as an act of kindness for 64-year-old Elsa Davila quickly became a nightmare. The victim’s daughers say Davila was grocery shopping June 2 near the Sulphur Plaza when she saw a man with a dog begging for money, KPLC reports .

“She went to give him some money, and on her way back, the dog broke the leash and attacked her,” said Davila’s daughter, Savanna Gonzales.

Davila was rushed to a hospital in New Orleans, where her daughters witnessed the aftermath of the attack. The 64-year-old was mauled in the face and stomach, according to a GoFundMe set up for her.

“I saw her in the hospital, and it was just devastating to see a hole in her face,” Gonzales said.

“It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life, and I like scary movies. But that’s just something else,” said Davila’s daughter, Michelle Garcia.

Davila underwent plastic surgery and is now recovering.

“She’s not allowed to talk or eat anything. She’s on a liquid diet and can’t talk. She has to text or write it down for the nurses,” Gonzales said.

The man who allegedly lost control of his dog has been identified as 37-year-old Kyle Smith. He is facing multiple charges, including trespassing, cruelty to animals and unlawful ownership of a vicious dog.

Garcia works at a store near where her mother was attacked and says the dog has caused issues in the past. They moved it off the property.

“The dog used to stay up here, but we had to move him because he stays growling at customers and doing different things. So, they walked him over here, and once he’s here, there’s no more they can do,” Garcia said.

Davila’s daughters describe their mom as a friendly and caring person. They say this incident has left her traumatized, but she’s choosing to stay strong.

“She’s scared, I know that. She’s already having nightmares about a dog chasing her. She lives with a dog, so she gets to go home to that. It’s going to be scary. She’s not ready for that, but she’s in high spirits,” Gonzales said.

The GoFundMe set up to help with Davila’s hospital bills and recovery can be found by clicking here .

The dog that attacked Davila is being held at Sulphur Animal Control. It is reportedly a pit bull mix.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

the residents dog stab tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

the residents dog stab tour

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

the residents dog stab tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

the residents dog stab tour

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

the residents dog stab tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

the residents dog stab tour

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

the residents dog stab tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

A police officer shot a blind pet dog. This small town wants justice.

The killing of Teddy the dog in Sturgeon, Mo., has upended the small, 900-person town, as residents call for the dismissal of officer Myron Woodson.

the residents dog stab tour

People are talking about it everywhere Judy Ledbetter goes in her 900-person Missouri community: At the Dollar General. At the meat market. At the Walmart pharmacy.

“It’s nonstop,” said Ledbetter, 73. “It’s one of the most dramatic things I’ve ever seen.”

A police officer called to help a blind and deaf dog shot him within moments of pulling up on scene. And Sturgeon residents want justice.

In a slice of small-town America where government meetings typically focus on issues like yard junk, and where city officials and residents refer to one another by first name, life has been upended by the saga of Teddy the Shih Tzu.

The zero-stoplight town has been thrust into turmoil in the nearly two weeks since the May 19 shooting of the 13-pound dog; the mayor resigned after initially defending the police officer. The new one suspended the officer. The dog’s owner filed a federal civil rights lawsuit asking for more than $1 million in damages.

Some residents, including those who describe themselves as pro-police, have gone as far as calling for the dismantling of their two-officer law enforcement agency.

“I think until you get this entire problem solved with the police department, you shut it down,” one man said to applause during a contentious city aldermen meeting this week.

But as outrage has steadily grown in and beyond Sturgeon, the city has declined to dismiss the officer, despite his actions appearing to go against city code. On Thursday, the aldermen launched an investigation into Myron Woodson, who will be on paid leave until its completion, according to a statement the mayor sent to The Washington Post.

Officials otherwise declined to answer questions from The Post, and the officer could not be reached for comment. City code calls for police to impound strays for about a week, housing and feeding them “in a humane manner.”

“This whole situation never should have happened,” said Abbey Harnish, who initially took in Teddy with her former fiancé, Nick Hunter. “It was handled in the wrong way entirely.”

The incident has brought international attention and a 54,000-signature Change.org petition to Sturgeon, a city with the tagline “a great place to grow!” Smaller than a square mile, it’s home to more churches (four) than restaurants (one). It’s the kind of place where golf carts are as common as cars, and where people exchange crops at the community garden on an honor system.

When Teddy escaped from his outdoor kennel on a sunny Sunday, the neighbor who found him posted on the community Facebook page looking for his owner. Pets on the run are common in Sturgeon, to the point where some are “frequent fliers we all know,” said Gina Miller, Ledbetter’s daughter.

Posts about them pop up on social media one or two times a week, and usually the owners are soon on their way over.

This time, though, the woman who found the lost 5-year-old dog noticed he seemed to be confused and at least partially blind, and she worried he could wander off or get hurt. So she called police for help. Woodson, a former corrections officer recently hired by the city, spent a few minutes trying to corral him. Then he fired two shots.

An hour or so later, Hunter, Teddy’s owner, was tearfully confronting Woodson. In a videotaped exchange, the officer said he shot the dog because he thought Teddy was injured and a stray.

The next day, the city posted a different explanation on its 1,400-follower Facebook page: The officer shot the dog out of concern it had rabies. The city later said it had reviewed the body-camera footage and found the officer’s actions justified.

Each development left residents angrier. The tension reached a crescendo last weekend when Mayor Kevin Abrahamson resigned without publicly disclosing a reason. The new mayor said the city board did not agree with the ex-mayor’s statement excusing the shooting. The rest of the board had only seen body-camera footage when a local outlet released it, the statement said.

“Like you, we were just as appalled by what we saw,” wrote mayor pro tem Seth Truesdell. “The actions of the Officer involved are not the values and beliefs of the residents of Sturgeon or the board of Alderman.”

By Tuesday, Hunter’s attorneys had filed a civil rights suit alleging the officer conducted an unlawful seizure of Hunter’s pet and the city failed to properly train Woodson to interact with the dog. The suit drew the backing of the national Animal Legal Defense Fund, which said in a statement it will provide a grant to help cover costs.

The organization included a quote from James Crosby, who wrote the Justice Department’s manual on law enforcement dog encounters, and said after viewing body-camera footage that what happened in Sturgeon could be the “least justifiable dog shooting I’ve ever witnessed in my 30-plus years working with law enforcement.”

Daniel Kolde, one of the attorneys who brought the suit, said a previous case he litigated in the state ended with a $750,000 settlement to a dog’s owner. He suggested more than civil penalties could be warranted in the Sturgeon case.

“We think that Officer Woodson’s actions constitute felony animal abuse and, in addition to our filing of our civil suit, we are calling upon the county prosecutor to bring his own criminal charges against this officer,” Kolde told The Post.

Neither the county prosecutor nor the state attorney general responded to inquiries about whether criminal charges are possible.

One resident, who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of repercussions in the small town, told The Post the incident has made some turn on city officials. Others said they now plan to go to every meeting to make sure they know what their elected officials are doing.

The night the lawsuit was filed, city aldermen met for their regularly scheduled monthly meeting. Dozens of Sturgeon residents came. Others drove in from a town 40 minutes away.

Miller arrived beforehand to set up a table outside with a tri-fold poster of Teddy photos, a donation jar and card for Hunter with the words “Puppy love.”

“Run free Teddy,” one person wrote. “You are loved and missed.”

One by one, residents blasted the police department, alleging to elected officials that it lacked oversight.

“This is your town,” a woman holding a “Justice for Teddy” sign told others in the crowd. “If you don’t speak up now, you might not ever get anything to change.”

Some community members said they’d prefer to rely on Boone County sheriff’s deputies, like other rural towns do.

“We back the blue except Woodson,” one resident’s sign read. “Fire him!”

Tuesday’s meeting ended with city officials promising to investigate the issue, formally launching the investigation 48 hours later. They said it would be conducted by a third party and made public at its conclusion.

But the sentiment to close the police department persisted days later, even for Ledbetter, who comes from a family of law enforcement officers.

“We don’t need cops,” she said. “Not in this town.”

Teddy’s supporters said they’d keep pushing for more change. Harnish, who recently moved to Iowa, hoped they’d not only fire the officer but also set higher standards for the rest of the department.

“Ultimately, nothing is going to bring my dog back,” she said. “But there’s something that needs to be done and change with both the city and the cop.”

A police officer shot a blind pet dog. This small town wants justice.

A display outside the Sturgeon city meeting for Teddy and his owner, including a donation jar that collected $25 for legal fees.

People are talking about it everywhere Judy Ledbetter goes in her 900-person Missouri community. At the Dollar General. At the meat market. At the Walmart pharmacy.

“It’s nonstop,” said Ledbetter, 73. “It’s one of the most dramatic things I’ve ever seen.”

A police officer called to help a blind and deaf dog shot it within moments of pulling up on scene. And Sturgeon residents want justice.

In a slice of small-town America where government meetings typically focus on issues like yard junk, and where city officials and residents refer to each other by first name, life has been upended by the saga of Teddy the Shih Tzu.

Teddy, a 13-pound blind and deaf Shih Tzu, was shot and killed on May 19 by a police officer in Sturgeon, Mo.

On Thursday, the aldermen launched an investigation into Myron Woodson, who will be on paid leave until its completion, according to a statement from the mayor.

Officials otherwise declined to answer questions from the Post, and the officer could not be reached for comment. City code calls for police to impound strays for about a week, housing and feeding them “in a humane manner.”

"This whole situation never should have happened," said Abbey Harnish, who initially took in Teddy with her former fiancé, Nick Hunter. "It was handled in the wrong way entirely."

The incident has brought international attention and a 54,000-signature Change.org petition to Sturgeon, a city with the tagline "a great place to grow!" Smaller than a square mile, it's home to more churches (four) than restaurants (one). It's the kind of place where golf carts are as common as cars, and where people exchange crops at the community garden on an honor system.

When Teddy escaped from his outdoor kennel on a sunny Sunday, the neighbor who found him posted on the community Facebook page looking for his owner. Pets on the run are common in Sturgeon, to the point where some are "frequent fliers we all know," said Gina Miller, Ledbetter's daughter.

An hour or so later, Teddy's owner Hunter was tearfully confronting Woodson.

The new mayor said the city board did not agree with the ex-mayor's statement excusing the shooting.

The suit drew the backing of the national Animal Legal Defense Fund, which said in a statement it would provide a grant to help cover costs.

Neither the county prosecutor nor the state attorney general responded to inquiries about whether criminal charges are possible.

One resident, who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of repercussions in the small town, said the incident has made some turn on city officials. Others said they now plan to go to every meeting to make sure they know what their elected officials are doing.

Warning: this episode contains strong language, descriptions of explicit content and sexual harassment

A disturbing new problem is sweeping American schools: Students are using artificial intelligence to create sexually explicit images of their classmates and then share them without the person depicted even knowing.

Natasha Singer, who covers technology, business and society for The Times, discusses the rise of deepfake nudes and one girl’s fight to stop them.
