Live reviews

The Strokes are unquestionably one of the best bands out there, and you can really tell that they have been influenced by The Doors. I love The Doors and so I love The Strokes.

Just like Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Strokes (Julian Casablancas) has an element of shyness to him. The band works together very well and they just look like they belong together: if you watch Fab Moretti (the drummer), he's always looking up and watching the other players really intensely. I really enjoy watching them play together and I love to see them live. They don’t talk to the audience much, and mainly just focus on playing, but they do make some contact with the audience. You can tell that their fans really love them and their concerts are always filled with good people.

Due to the fact that they are so popular they usually play for really large crowds, but if you are very lucky you can catch one of their smaller more intimate performances. I've only ever managed to see them with a large crowd, but I have to say it was still really fun. You get a much bigger atmosphere when there are more people; everyone is so excited, but Julian looks so cool and reserved in his leather coat and sunglasses.

Since I've been a fan of theirs (for more than 10 years), I really think that The Strokes are getting better over time and that is good because I want them to be around for a long time!

I was lucky enough to see the Strokes at Governor's Ball in 2014. It had been 3 years since legendary rock band The Strokes had played a show. They surprised New York with a pop up Governor's Ball pre-party show a week prior so it was their second show back after not touring their latest album. Either way, it felt just as special to be their first festival show in a while. I have never had a better concert experience than my Strokes show. Between exploding with "Barely Legal" and ending with "New York City Cops," all 5 albums were touched upon. Frontman Julian Casablancas is extremely confident in the best way possible. He interacted with the audience, sang every song perfectly and messed around with other bandmates during some songs. He even goofily covered Nikolai's eyes while dancing around stage. The fact that there were times when the crowd was singing guitar riffs louder than they were being played is a sign of an amazing show in my opinion. The crowd was on fire and it was obvious the Strokes fed off this energy in an amazing way.

If the Strokes come back for a real tour, do NOT miss out on the opportunity to see them; the show will be so good you'll get chills thinking about it even a month later.

It’s official: they’re back.

The Strokes played in Berlin their first show (in a venue) in Europe in 9 years with a solid combination of their 3 first records, one song from Come Down Machine and 2 new songs (The Adults are Talking and Bad Decisions).

They played with a great mood between them and we could see one of the best Casablancas, joking with the band and the crowd, even singing Last Nite jumping to the public.

I hope this is just the beginning and they play in more venues than during last 14 years.

As someone who grew up listening to The Strokes and holding this band in high regard, it kills me to say that this show was a major disappointment.

Nobody could hear Julian's vocals. I'm not sure if the instruments were too loud or if Julian's mic was indeed too loud, but the fact of the matter is that you could not hear Julian at all.

Besides that, the band themselves sounded awesome and seeing Albert go off during Last Nite was simply awesome. Singing along with the whole crowd to classics like 12:51, Reptillia, and Hard to Explain felt like a dream.

The Floor GA tickets were not cheap and considering the major flaw that basically ruined the show, I can't say I would ever go out of my way to see The Strokes again if they toured nearby.

I recently saw the Strokes at the Forum in LA. It twas my first time and they were tight. Julian's falsetto was on point and I got no complaints. I will definitely be seeing them again! We are lucky that they are still together.

Red Hot Chili Peppers have enlisted a bevy of big-name support acts for a 2023 tour of North America and Europe. At dates kicking off in Vancouver next March, the North American shows will feature support from two artists apiece, selected from the Strokes , St. Vincent , the Mars Volta , Thundercat , and City and Colour. Iggy Pop and the Roots , meanwhile, will join the band at select European dates. King Princess is playing a handful of shows both sides of the Atlantic. Check out the dates below.

The dates include a Glasgow show originally scheduled for 2022, which will now take place next summer at the city’s Hampden Park Stadium. Red Hot Chili Peppers released a pair of albums this year: Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen . The Strokes' Julian Casablancas sings into a microphone.

It’s time to tune your air guitars.

This August, The Strokes have two North American concerts lined up this August — and for fans wondering “Is This It,” we can confirm, it is.

First up, the legendary NYC band heads southwest to perform with opening act Weyes Blood at Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Monday, Aug. 14.

Five days later, they’ll return home for a one-off gig at Forest Hills, NY’s Forest Hills Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 19 with special guest singer Angel Olsen, comedian Seaton Smith and Promiseland aka Johann Rashid.

Need last-minute tickets to see Julian Casablancas belt out “Someday,” “Reptilia,” “Last Nite,” “12:51,” “You Only Live Once” and bangers from their 2021 Grammy-winning album “The New Abnormal?”

Well, it’s not too late.

Seats are available for both shows — they’re just not cheap.

The lowest price for the two concerts, at the time of publication, is $139 before fees on Vivid Seats.

That may have something to do with the scarcity of these shows; however, the good news is they may go down as the show dates approach.

All we know is the best way to find a deal is to keep refreshing this page .

By doing so, it’s very possible you just might find a bargain.

In the meantime, our team compiled everything you need to know about the Strokes’ brief August tour — from the best prices for each concert to set lists to details about the support acts — below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

The Strokes 2023 tour schedule

A complete breakdown of all the cheapest ticket prices for The Strokes two concerts on their mini-tour can be found right here:

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

The Strokes set list

Prior to these two concerts, the garage rockers have been touring overseas.

Here’s what they played live at their most recent headlining non-festival gig courtesy of Set List FM :

01.) “What Ever Happened?” 02.) “Bad Decisions” 03.) “Soma” 04.) “Juicebox” 05.) “Automatic Stop” 06.) “The Adults Are Talking” 07.) “Take It or Leave It” 08.) “Under Control” 09.) “Reptilia” 10.) “Call It Fate, Call It Karma” 11.) “Red Light” 12.) “Someday” 13.) “Ize of the World” Encore:

14.) “Hard to Explain” 15.) “You Only Live Once” 16.) “Last Nite”

The Strokes special guests

Weyes Blood is the brainchild of singer Natalie Laura Mering. Her nostalgic, yearning, lush and lo-fi music is the perfect complement to The Strokes’ brash rock. We recommend checking out her most-streamed song “Andromeda” for a sample of her sound.

Angel Olsen has a voice you can’t get out of your head. We mean that in a good way. Switching from bold to vulnerable — sometimes in a single track — she captivates listeners with her refreshingly honest vocals. While she’s more well-known for other songs, for us, we suggest starting with her incredible cover of Billy Idol’s “Eyes Without A Face.”

Seaton Smith wows audiences all over North America on a nightly basis. Now, the “Mulaney” actor (remember when John Mulaney had a sitcom on Fox?) and comic will deliver laughs poking fun at his past, society as a whole and maybe even throw in a little crowd work when he performs in Queens.

Promised Land wears many hats. Johann Rashid plays punk-like music, does performance art, and screens video at his live shows. These shows are not to be missed — he often leaves the stage with “broken ribs, bloody gashes, or jalapeno-infused tequila in his eyes” according to his bio . Gnarly.

Rock bands on tour in 2023

While The Strokes have just two shows lined up — as of now — many other groups have longer tours scheduled.

Here’s a quick look at a few other acts you won’t want to miss live these next few months.

•  Death Cab For Cutie with The Postal Service

• Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

•  Arctic Monkeys

• Pixies and Modest Mouse

PINEHURST, N.C. — Pinehurst No. 2 gave players fits on Friday — some more than others. The course played firm and fast on a hot day. Balls were on the green and then they weren’t. Lip outs and three jacks and all the misery typically associated with a U.S. Open. There won’t be any 62s this week at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, that’s for sure.

But first some of the heroics. Italy’s Francesco Molinari made an ace at No. 9, his final hole of his second round to go from outside the cutline to making the weekend.

“That’s what I was trying to do. It was the last chance to have a chance to play the weekend. I saw we were still 61st, so hopefully we can sneak in the cut,” Molinari said. “Yeah, that’s golf in a nutshell.”

According to Elias Sports Bureau, that’s never happened before in a U.S. Open. Special stuff.

How about Xander Schauffele, the reigning PGA Championship winner, who shot 69 to finish at 1-under 139 and inside the top 10. It also extended his PGA Tour-leading streak of made cuts to 49, matching Steve Stricker for the longest such streak since Tiger Woods set the mark with 142.

It took 5-over 145 to be among the 74 players to make the cut. Three amateurs advanced to the weekend: Neal Shipley, Luke Clanton and Gunnar Broin. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler survived on the number, shooting 4-over 74 on Day Two.

But a bunch of big names were on the wrong side of the cutline and were trunk-slamming on Friday.

Viktor Hovland (6 over)

2024 U.S. Open

Hovland was among the favorites this week after finishing third at the PGA Championship last month. He dug himself a big hole by shooting 78 on Thursday and not even a Friday 68 could save him.

Hovland made six bogeys and two double bogeys on Thursday. He ranked 151 st  in both SG: Tee to Green and SG: Around the Green, which is an ugly combination. On Friday, he was eighth in SG: Tee to Green and second in SG: Around the Green but the damage was done.

Robert MacIntyre (6 over)

the strokes tour 2023 italia

The Scot, who won his maiden PGA Tour title at the RBC Canadian Open two weeks ago, apparently needs his father, Dougie, on the bag more than even he knew. MacIntyre struggled to make birdies, just one on Friday and three overall for the first 36 holes. It didn’t help that he was 2 for 7 in scrambling on Friday. A double at 13 and bogey at 17 sealed his fate as he signed for 70-76.

Max Homa (6 over)

2024 U.S. Open

Homa’s approach game was a tale of two rounds. He gained more than two strokes in the first round and ranked fifth in the field of 156 in SG: Approach the Green. One day later, not so much. He ranked 154 th  and lost more than 3.5 strokes.

Homa, who shot 71-75, missed his second cut in his last three starts.

Nick Dunlap (6 over)

2024 U.S. Open

The reigning U.S. Amateur champ has been in the pro ranks since January and is learning how cut day can be a nail biter. This one is going to be a tough one to stomach as Dunlap made a triple bogey on the par-3 ninth hole, his final hole of the day. He went from 3 over to 6 over and out of the tournament. Dunlap’s tee shot sailed long into the native area and he played ping pong back and forth, including into a bunker. Tough way to end his week.

Tiger Woods (7 over)

2024 U.S. Open

Tiger failed to capitalize on a good driving round on Thursday and was equally frustrated on Friday, saying, “it was probably the highest score I could have shot today.” He posted 74-73, making just one birdie on Friday when he was battling for the cut. Tiger, who received a special exemption into the field of 156 this week was asked if this would be his last U.S. Open.

“As far as my last Open Championship or U.S. Open Championship, I don’t know what that is. It may or may not be,” he said.

Playing in his first U.S. Open since 2020, Tiger missed his second consecutive cut at the championship and fourth in his last five. For more on Tiger’s second round, click here .

Jason Day (8 over)

2024 U.S. Open

The former world No. 1 shot 71-77. Perhaps it was the conservative outfit from Malbon that threw him off his game. In any event, Day struggled on Friday, ranking No. 149 in SG: Tee to Green and 151 st  in SG: Putting. Being 4 of 10 in scrambling usually adds up to scores around 77.

Will Zalatoris (8 over)

2024 U.S. Open

The Wake Forest product has to be disappointed with shooting 75-73. Zalatoris doesn’t have a top-10 finish since the Masters. A crooked driver hurt Zalatoris, who hit just half the fairways and ranked T-142 in fairways hit. On Thursday, Zalatoris was 2 for 9 in scrambling. He hit just 7 of 18 greens on Friday.

Rickie Fowler (8 over)

2024 U.S. Open

Fowler failed to make a single birdie on Friday at Pinehurst No. 2, a course where he finished T-2 a decade ago. This is Fowler’s second straight missed cut and he continues to struggle this season after ending a winless drought last year at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and being selected to the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Fowler’s tee-to-green game let him down. He ranked 141st in that category on Friday. Adding insult to injury was a subpar short game. He was just 6 of 17 in scrambling for the week. It added up to rounds of 71-77 and that’s not good enough for a weekend tee time.

Dustin Johnson (9 over)

2024 U.S. Open

DJ missed the cut at the U.S. Open for the first time since 2017. He shot 74-75. The LIV golfer missed the cut in a major for the third time in his last four starts. This marked the final major start of his 30s. (DJ turns 40 on June 22.)

Johnson was 1 for 5 in scrambling on Thursday and 4 of 11 on Friday. The lowlight had to be the triple on No. 9.

Sungjae Im (10 over)

2024 U.S. Open

Sungjae Im of South Korea plays his shot from the 15th tee during a practice round prior to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort on June 12, 2024 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. (Photo by Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images)

Im shot 74-75 due to a balky putter. He ranked 149 th  in SG: Putting on Thursday and wasn’t much better on Friday. Im entered the week with two straight top-10 finishes. But that streak came to a halt and another one continued – this marks Im’s third straight missed cut in a major this season.

Justin Thomas (11 over)

2024 U.S. Open

Thomas’s major mojo is still MIA. He missed three of four cuts in 2023 and now 2 of 3 in 2024. Thomas stunk up the joint on Thursday, shooting 77, and followed with 74 on Friday.

His approach game was off (149 th on Thursday, 152nd on Friday and 154th combined for 36 holes) and his putter was lacking (144th). Being 3 for 11 in scrambling contributed to his shooting hockey sticks. Friday wasn’t much better. He’s now missed cuts at the Players Championship, Masters and U.S. Open.

Phil Mickelson (15 over)

2024 U.S. Open

Mickelson’s week can be summed up in one stat: he failed to make a single birdie at the 124 th  U.S. Open.

Mickelson opened the championship with four consecutive bogeys, five of the first six holes and six of the first eight. He bogeyed half the holes on Thursday. On Friday, Mickelson started on the back nine and made double at 18 and shot 76. He beat just five golfers in the field.

Mickelson missed the cut at the U.S. Open for the third straight year and fourth time in his last five appearances. He hasn’t had a top 10 at the U.S. Open since 2013.

Past champions sent packing

2024 U.S. Open

Three-time U.S. Open champ Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson (2016) weren’t the only past U.S. Open champs who didn’t have the magic this week. Lucas Glover (2009), Webb Simpson (2012), Justin Rose (2013) and Gary Woodland (2019) all are going home early.

Åberg Beats the Heat, Field for 36-Hole Lead at Pinehurst

Mother Nature turned up the heat on Friday at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club as temperatures soared into the 90s. But the second round of a U.S. Open is always played in a cauldron, whether the mercury approaches triple digits or the patience of the 156 competitors just reaches a boiling point.

Intensity, elation and frustration are all tangible characteristics that can be found as the pressure mounts just to play the weekend.

While many expected Course No. 2 to extol a measure of revenge on this talented group of 140 professionals and 16 amateurs – and a few succumbed to Donald Ross’ masterpiece amid the heat and humidity that engulfed the North Carolina Sandhills – a good number of players maintained their cool.

OK, so first-round co-leader Rory McIlroy stumbled a little bit from his brilliant opening-round 65 to shoot 2-over-par 72. Nevertheless, the 35-year-old Northern Irishman’s 3-under total of 137 kept the 26-time PGA Tour winner within striking distance of ending a 10-year major-less drought. Patrick Cantlay, Thursday’s other co-leader, also slipped to a 1-over-par 71 but only is a shot back from the lead.

The midway leader is a 24-year-old Swede looking to become the first since amateur Francis Ouimet in 1913 to win the U.S. Open in his first attempt. That would be Ludvig Åberg, a lanky 2023 Texas Tech graduate who was the runner-up in his first-ever major-championship start at the Masters Tournament this past April. Åberg was one of 22 players to post a sub-par score on Day 2, carding a 1-under 69 to go along with Thursday’s 66 for a 5-under total of 135.

The course played nearly a half-stroke easier on Friday (72.8) than in Thursday’s opening round (73.25).

Lurking one stroke behind is 2020 U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, of Grapevine, Texas, already with a runner-up finish (PGA Championship) and a share of eighth (Masters) in majors this year, Thomas Detry, of Belgium, who tied for fourth in last month’s PGA Championship, 2024 Farmers Insurance Open champion Matthieu Pavon, of France, and eight-time PGA Tour winner Cantlay, of Jupiter, Fla., seeking his first major title despite a decorated career that includes two Ryder Cup appearances. DeChambeau, Detry and Pavon posted rounds of 69, 67 and 69, respectively.

McIlroy and long-hitting Tony Finau, of Lehi, Utah, like Cantlay a multi-time PGA Tour winner without a major title on his résumé, sit two strokes back. Finau, whose best U.S. Open finish is solo fifth in 2018 at Shinnecock Hills, backed up a first-round 68 with a 69.

Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion who became the first male player from Japan to win a major, produced a bogey-free 66 on Friday – joining McIlroy and Sergio Garcia to achieve that feat – to move into solo eighth at 138.

Six others are at 1-under 139, including the 2024 PGA champion Xander Schauffele and Raleigh, N.C., resident Akshay Bhatia, bidding to become the first left-hander to win a U.S. Open.

Once again, 2020 U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau finds himself in position to win another major title. He's coming off a solo second at last month's PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. (USGA/Matt Hahn)

The cut of low 60 and ties came at 5-over 145 and included world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, past U.S. Open champions Matt Fitzpatrick and Brooks Koepka and 2018 British Open champion Francesco Molinari, who aced his final hole, the par-3 ninth, to jump from 7 over to 5 over.

Last year at this time, Åberg was embarking on a professional career after several All-American seasons in Lubbock, Texas. It didn’t take him long to make an impact, as he won the DP World Tour’s Omega European Masters and was a captain’s pick for Luke Donald’s European Ryder Cup Team that triumphed in Italy. Last fall, he won the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic at Sea Island Golf Club in Georgia, and continued his fine form into 2024 before a knee injury slowed his progress at last month’s PGA Championship, where he missed the cut.

Over the course of two rounds, nobody has been better at playing typical U.S. Open golf than Åberg, who has hit 26 of 28 fairways and 30 of 36 greens to lead the field. That has taken the pressure off trying to be creative around the inverted-saucer putting surfaces that typify Course No. 2.

“This being my first one, I think a U.S. Open is supposed to be hard,” said Åberg, who got a taste of Pinehurst five years ago when he qualified for match play at the U.S. Amateur. “It's supposed to be tricky, and it's supposed to challenge any aspect of your game. And I feel like it's really doing that. But super fortunate with the way that things have turned out over the last couple days, and hopefully we'll be able to keep it up.”

A few years ago, DeChambeau, who also won the U.S. Amateur and NCAA Division I individual title in a magical 2015 season, looked like Lou Ferigno in a polo as he hit the gym and ingested thousands of calories a day in an effort to bulk up. More recently, however, he’s trimmed down and focused more on nutrition without given up too much distance. It’s led to better results, at least in the majors where he came up one stroke short of Schauffele last month at Valhalla Golf Club and contended into Sunday at Augusta.

He had a roller-coaster Friday with five birdies against four bogeys yet finds himself in the hunt for major title No. 2. In 2020, he was the only player under par at Winged Foot in posting a six-stroke win. He’s also posted a pair of victories on LIV Golf, including at the Greenbrier in West Virginia where he carded a 58.

“I'm not really focused on the total strokes gained for the most part, just trying to execute the best shot I can every single time under the conditions because it's going to be different,” said DeChambeau. “This golf course is not going to be the same come tomorrow and the next day, and I'm expecting that. Us competitors, players, have to adjust to those conditions accordingly. Look, I'm excited for the game that I have right now. I feel pretty confident and ready to get after it this weekend.”

Detry, 31, took a different approach to his preparation for Pinehurst. Instead of playing early in the morning or during peak hours, he chose to practice in the twilight, coming to the course at 4 p.m. and spending at least 20 minutes on each green to understand the nuances of these unique putting surfaces. It looks to have paid off for the former University of Illinois All-American who arrived in Champaign lacking a great short game. On Friday, he needed just 28 putts and gained 3.25 strokes on the field, which ranked first in Round 2. Only a couple of closing bogeys on Nos. 6 and 8 – his 15th and 17th holes of the day – curtailed what could have been a 65.

“Especially with the late tee times I had [on Thursday], it was nice to see the course,” said Detry, who has averaged 1.68 putts per round. “I was still on the golf course Wednesday at 7 p.m. [You] kind of see the course and the conditions of play as close to what it's going to be during tournament day.”

What’s Next

The 71 professionals and three amateurs who made the 36-hole cut will play an additional 36 holes on the weekend at Pinehurst No. 2. The third round will begin at 8:44 a.m. EDT. Broadcast coverage begins at 10 a.m. on USA Network and then switches over to NBC at noon.

  • Sepp Straka registered the 52nd known hole-in-one in U.S. Open history when he aced the 194-yard ninth hole with a 7-iron. There were three holes-in-one last year at The Los Angeles Country Club. It was the third ace recorded at a Pinehurst U.S. Open, following Peter Jacobsen in 2005 on the ninth hole and Zach Johnson in 2014, also at the ninth.
  • Several hours later, Francesco Molinari, the 2018 British Open champion, aced the same hole to go from 7 over for the championship to 5 over and make the 36-hole cut. In 2005, his brother, Edoardo, holed out from a bunker for birdie on the ninth hole at Merion Golf Club, his 36th of stroke play, to get into a playoff for match play at the 2005 U.S. Amateur, and then won the championship. Francesco is the first player to ace his final hole to make the cut in U.S. Open history.
  • Sam Bairstow , a lefty from England, didn’t make the cut in his first U.S. Open, but the 25-year-old departed Pinehurst with a good taste in his mouth after a 17-stroke improvement from Round 1. Following an 84, the highest score among any competitor this week, he rebounded with a 3-under 67. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he’s the first golfer in U.S. Open history to shoot a round in the 80s and then break 70 in Round 2. It also was the biggest two-round improvement by a player since Scott Gregory (92-75) in 2018 at Shinnecock Hills. The championship’s largest two-round improvement is 19 strokes, achieved by several players, including Earl Puckett (93-74) in 1965 at Bellerive Country Club.
  • World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler had just his second birdie-less round as a professional and first since shooting 2-over 72 in the final round of the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge (16 pars, 2 bogeys). His only other birdie-less round in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event was the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont when the then-amateur opened with 69 but missed the cut. Scheffler made the cut on the number to keep his streak alive at 39 consecutive made cuts. It’s the second longest on the PGA Tour behind Xander Schauffele (49). Scheffler avoided being the first world No. 1 to miss the cut in a U.S. Open since Dustin Johnson in 2017 at Erin Hills.
  • Despite finishing 3 over par over his final four holes, defending champion Wyndham Clark made the cut at 4-over 144. Other past champions to earn weekend tee times were Brooks Koepka, Martin Kaymer, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and Matt Fitzpatrick.
  • Matt Kuchar, who turns 46 on June 21, was the oldest player to make the cut.
  • Sahith Theegala rebounded from an opening-round 77 to shoot 68 and make the cut on the number.
  • Among the notables to miss the cut were past U.S. Open champions Tiger Woods, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, Lucas Glover, Gary Woodland and Webb Simpson, major champions Justin Thomas, Jason Day and Phil Mickelson, 2023 FedExCup champion Viktor Hovland, 2023 U.S. Amateur champion Nick Dunlap, world No. 1 amateur Gordon Sargent and hometown “hero” Michael McGowan , who is the grandson of the late World Golf Hall of Famer Peggy Kirk Bell, and grew up down the road in Southern Pines. Also failing to qualify for the weekend was 2014 U.S. Junior Amateur champion/2022 U.S. Open co-runner-up Will Zalatoris, 2023 USA Walker Cuppers Ben James and Stewart Hagestad, and 2017 Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cupper/2024 RBC Canadian Open winner Robert MacIntyre.
  • Three amateurs survived the cut led by 2023 U.S. Amateur runner-up Neal Shipley , who is planning to turn professional next week. He sits at 3-over 143 along with University of Kansas standout Gunner Broin , the only player to survive local/final qualifying and play the weekend. Florida State All-American Luke Clanton, who won the North & South Amateur at Pinehurst in 2022, fired a 69 on Friday to make the cut on the number. Shipley is trying to become the first to earn low-amateur honors in the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year since Viktor Hovland in 2019.

“It's just work, discipline [and] learning from the past mistakes you've done. The most dangerous guy is the one that learns from mistakes. That's my opinion. I failed a lot. Helped me to understand a couple things in my game, in my swing. I finally got my first win in Europe. Brings me a lot of confidence because it was showing to me and myself that we were on the right road on everything we were doing in terms of training. Then I just came to America, enjoying every moment because it's a dream come true for me. Since I'm kid, I'm dreaming about America. I came with very little and low expectations. I think probably this is what made the difference so far.” – Matthieu Pavon

“You're going to have super highs and super lows. I just saw when we were on 10, Sepp Straka made a hole-in-one, right?  Right behind us. That was a high, super high, and it was really cool to feed off that energy. Then I see guys ping-ponging it around the greens out here, and it's like, I don't want to watch that.” – Bryson DeChambeau on Pinehurst

“I think it's really important to play from the fairway. I got off track on a few holes, and it's tough to get it back in position. This golf course is going to play very challenging over the weekend, especially with the forecast that we have. So, I think being smart and being patient, it's inevitable there's going to be some mistakes made, but that's just part of playing a U.S. Open.” – Patrick Cantlay

“I was pretty much in that same position, what, a month ago at the PGA. I thought I did pretty well with it. My confidence is good. My play is good. I feel mentally stable as well. I think I've got all my chances. I think it's going to be a fun challenge.” – Thomas Detry

“You just need to have a lot of precision. I feel like for the most part I've done that well this week. I've got the ball pin-high quite a lot, which is really important. I'm not trying to land the ball pin-high. You're trying to hit it to a number with a wedge, maybe five short of that, and then with a mid-iron you're trying to land it 30 feet short of the pin to try to get it pin-high.” – Rory McIlroy

“What are the chances really. I don't even know what to say. Just incredible.” – Francesco Molinari on his ace that got him into the weekend

“Yesterday I felt like I played really well and got a lot out of my game, which I feel like I've done a good job of this year. Today was kind of the opposite. I felt like especially the back nine today, I actually hit it really well. I just couldn't get a putt to fall early. Then I had that unfortunate deal on No. 5 which probably on any other golf course if I hit those two shots, driver, 3-wood into a green on a par-5 and probably have a pretty good look at birdie, I'm not going to have walking off with a 7. But just unfortunate place for me to put myself.” – Scottie Scheffler after his 4-over 74

“It's a fun course to play, as mentally tough as it is, because there's just some holes where normally [at a] U.S. Open you think about long rough, long golf courses. But this week it's still kind of playing long, but there's no rough and there's just waste areas. For me, I've been doing a really good job of just kind of positioning myself consistently, doing the right things, missing in the right spots. I think that's what this golf course brings out of you.” – Tom Kim after a 68

“Perfect number for me. Tried to land it 185. It was a really good swing. Fortunately, [it] rolled out and went in the hole. I had one of my best friends playing with me today, J.T. [Poston]. He was there for my ace at Augusta [National] during the par 3 [contest], as well. Our celebration this time was a little bit better.” – Sepp Straka on his hole-in-one

“Frustrating. I'm not here for the weekend. Granted, my ball-striking and felt like my putting was good enough to be in contention, and I'm not.” – Tiger Woods on not playing the weekend

Francesco Molinari sinks hole in one to make US Open cut, Ludvig Åberg on top of leaderboard

Sport Francesco Molinari sinks hole in one to make US Open cut, Ludvig Åberg on top of leaderboard

Francesco Molinari watches a tee shot during a US Open practice round.

Francesco Molinari walked to up the final tee at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina essentially needing a miracle to make the cut at the US Open.

The Italian delivered with the shot of the second round, a dramatic hole in one on the 194-yard, par-three ninth using a 7-iron.

Molinari, who started the round on the back nine, was two strokes over the projected cut line at the time.

But the eagle moved him to 5-over-par for the tournament and will allow him to play the final two rounds, with the top 60 and ties making the cut.

He could barely believe his eyes when the ball hit the left edge of the green and starting tracking toward the cup and fell in.

His playing partners, Ryo Ishikawa and Sergio Garcia, had already hit their tee shots and were walking toward the green when they heard the roar of the crowd.

They raised their arms in the air simultaneously before returning to congratulate Molinari on the tee box.

"I don't even know what to say. Just incredible," Molinari said of his third career ace on the US PGA Tour.

"It was the last chance to have a chance to play the weekend. I saw we were still 61st at the time. That's golf in a nutshell."

Molinari, who shot a 2-over 72 for the round, said he was not going for an ace, but just wanted to get the ball close and have a shot at a birdie and then just hope for the best.

"With that flag, if you hit a good shot, you can get it within birdie range," he said.

"But the chances are incredibly small, so I don't know what to say."

It was the second hole in one of the day on the ninth hole at Pinehurst.

Sepp Straka had an ace earlier, six holes after he hit the flag stick on his way to a triple bogey.

Straka landed the ball in the front portion of the green, and it rolled about 9.1 metres into the cup.

It was the first ace on the PGA Tour for Straka, who raised his arms in jubilation. He also made the cut.

Ludvig Åberg shakes hands with his caddied after the US Open second round.

Sweden's Ludvig Åberg shot a 1-under 69 to claim the lead after the second round.

He is 5-under for the tournament.

Bryson DeChambeau, who had five birdies and four bogeys for a 69, and Belgium's Thomas Detry, who shot 67, are among the golfers one shot back at 4-under.

They are joined by first-round co-leader Patrick Cantlay (71), who overcame a double-bogey on the eighth hole.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is 5-over and will contest the remainder of the tournament after being in danger of missing the cut after a birdie-less 74.

First-round co-leader Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland shot a 2-over 72 to be tied for fifth place.

Meanwhile, Australians Adam Scott (2-over), Min Woo Lee (2-over) and Cam Smith (3-over) all made the cut.

Path to Paris: Forget form, forget everything... it's time for big-game PV Sindhu

  • Zenia D'Cunha

When was the first time you heard of PV Sindhu?

Maybe it was in 2013, when an 18-year-old Sindhu beat two Chinese players back-to-back to end India's 30-year long wait for a singles medal at the World Championships. Or maybe it was in 2016, when a 21-year-old Sindhu stunned the field to become first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal.

Both these results had come out of nowhere and little expectation, at a time Indian badminton had another top player in Saina Nehwal. But they are symbolic of what PV Sindhu would become for India - a big-match, big-medal player, especially when least expected.

Now turning 29, Sindhu has two Olympic medals to her name already, a first for an Indian woman, and is going for an unprecedented hat-trick at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

This time though she is neither a promising youngster like at Rio 2016 nor the reigning world champion like at Tokyo 2021. This time, Sindhu heads into the Games as a grizzled veteran coming through the toughest phase of her storied career.

Exactly two years before Paris 2024, Sindhu had coasted to Commonwealth Games gold. Or so it had seemed. Later, it was revealed that Sindhu had played from the quarters on with a stress fracture in her ankle. The pain was dismissed for gold, but it would end up costing her quite a bit.

A five-month injury layoff and she returned a shadow of the player she once was. Her striking game took a hit and her confidence slumped as the losses piled on. It took a further year, and another injury layoff in late 2023 (accompanied by a complete overhaul of her core support team) for her to rediscover her groove. It's nowhere near her ceiling, but she now has a stable foundation to build on.

Will that be enough to see Sindhu's Path to Paris end on the podium again?

"She looks physically very good to me. This morning when I was talking to her, I could see the glow on her face," says Vimal Kumar, Chief Coach at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bangalore where Sindhu moved to train this year.

It sounds like a strange comment, especially when you consider Sindhu's recent track record: In her final three tournaments before the Paris Games, she had a mixed run of final, second round and first round exit. All three losses ended similarly - a tough, deciding third game where she could not hold on to her advantage after being made to fight.

Indeed, all her losses this year bar one (against undisputed world No 1 An Se Young) have come in the decider. Several of them advantageous positions, often from a lack of finishing when things get tight.

Now, that doesn't sound too good when seen in isolation. But there are clear signs that just beneath these losses, the Sindhu spark is back.

Physically, she is back to playing a more attacking game, imposing the physique and pace that made her such a threat. Mentally, she is back to enjoying her badminton again, an important building block of her confidence. Both these aspects were noticeably missing during Sindhu's year in the wilderness.

She went back to the start, putting in the work. She changed her strength and conditioning set-up and training with Wayne Lombard, the South African specialist (who had helped the Tokyo semi-reaching women's hockey team and now wrestler Vinesh Phogat). Long sessions with Padukone and new full-time coach Agus Dwi Santoso helped with developing a sharper attack.

And she started looking like her pre-injury, pre-pandemic self, even if the results don't show that yet.

For Sindhu, re-finding and refining her attacking gameplay will be crucial to her Olympic quest - especially in the fast courts and minimal drift of the Porte de la Chapelle Arena in Paris. She has played her best badminton when going all-out in creating openings, using her impressive heights and wingspan, and a plucky body smash here and there, to command the court. (The best example of this is when she became the world champion in 2019, where she virtually blasted opponents of court with her attacking play.)

Much of that revival is down to her stint with Padukone, for whom she moved from Hyderabad to Bengaluru. After changing four different coaches in about a year and struggling to settle in a style or rhythm, her game this year has reflected the new-found stability. Padukone even travelled with Sindhu to the French Open and All England Championship this year, a rare move from the veteran.

Mentorship is something that I believe everyone needs at some point in their life. There will be times when you stagnate. But like a lighthouse showing the way to ships, you need an old, experienced soul to guide you back on track. That is Prakash Padukone to me. I am so... pic.twitter.com/OVXtCuVV0w - Pvsindhu (@Pvsindhu1) March 16, 2024

"Prakash has been trying to help her play a little more dominant, more at the net, using her height," says Vimal. "She can play a lot better and create openings because she has a good finishing stroke, and she has a good fit. That's her strength, so she should play to her strength."

This has also led to the return of a classic Sindhu stroke - the jump smash, which is amplified by her impressive 5'11" frame.

"At the Rio Olympics, the way Sindhu played was completely different. With the jump smash, the opponents [and us] were very surprised because she hadn't played it like that before. I feel that really worked in her favour," says Aparna Popat, former India player.

"In fact, the two performances where Sindhu very obviously did something different, was Rio [Olympic silver] and the second was her World Championship gold in Basel."

This is also why her struggles on BWF Tour must be viewed in context. She has played just nine tournaments so far, managing her calendar and training blocks all the aim to peak for Paris. And she is still adding to her game, finetuning her skills to maximise her weapons.

Like her racquet preparation, which looks sharper now. "Earlier it felt a little bit slower and longer but now the racquet head is coming early and quick," says Shlok Ramchandran, former Indian player now a coach in the USA. "That is the number one thing which I've seen change in the past six months. I saw her play at the US Open last year, and it wasn't the same,".

This is a fascinating observation because it shows that Sindhu, at 28 years of age with over a decade of being in gruelling elite sport, is still upscaling with intent.

"It has been an okay year in terms of performance, but we can forget about those because she not setting goals to win these tournaments," adds Aparna. "She'd love to win but that's not something that we should really be concerned about. We should really look at the quality of the matches that she's played."

Sindhu is labelled a big-tournament player for a reason beyond those record five World Championship and two Olympic medals. She has an intrinsic ability to elevate her game when needed, irrespective of form guide on tour. In fact, the two consecutive Olympic medals have come in years when she was not at her best week in week out on tour.

In other words, her BWF tour performance is not the best marker to gauge her Olympic chances.

The results, particularly against top players, have not gone Sindhu's way; she pushed Rio champion Carolina Marin to the brink, gave a proper scare to Tokyo champion Chen Yu Fei at the Olympic venue, and could not make headway in the one-sided rivalry against An Se Young. The other way of looking at this equation, though, is that Sindhu has had competitive exposure against the top players.

"What I've observed is that she's a little vulnerable against a newer opponent, ones she has not faced before," says Vimal. But against familiar opponents, some of whom she has played over a dozen times in her career, Sindhu will always have the edge of experience.

"I saw the entry list and one of the reasons I think Sindhu can make it is because most of them are from the earlier batches, who have played the last two Olympics," says former player Trupti Murgunde. "Apart from maybe two or three, she has been with this group for years."

The other factor is that all the women's singles stalwarts, like Sindhu, are coming to Paris with considerable battle scars.

"Quite a few of these players are also carrying big injuries. Tai Tzu Ying [knee], Yamaguchi [hip], Carolina [two ACL surgeries], even An Se Young [knee] because she played so many tournament," adds Vimal.

The BWF Tour can be punishing with weekly tournaments and a bunch of mandatory competitions for top players. With shuttles slowing down, the games have become longer and that has taken a toll on all bodies.

With most top women's singles players veering towards counter-punching style of play, Sindhu has a solid window of opportunity given the strength, variety and reach she can bring in her strokes.

The draw, to be made on July 12, therefore assumes great significance in deciding Sindhu's fate. Likely seeded 10th, she will need some luck to fall her way even before the Games begin. If she can avoid bogeys like An till before the semifinals, she has a fighting chance in this field.

The tangible pieces of Sindhu's game blueprint are all falling back into place after the outlier 2023 season.

She is back to her peak physicality and a long training block set in Germany till the Olympics. Her footwork is improving after the leg injury injuries, her endurance is coming through in the increasingly inevitable three-game battles. Her coach and mentor are giving her the freedom to play with intent and she is using the license to hit, going for the lines and air whenever she can.

It is the intangibles of sport now that will be Sindhu's big opponents before the Games begin. Tactics and mentality. Confidence and body language. Handling pressure. Closing out the 19-19 situations. Recovering from bad points. Making the right judgement calls.

Sindhu has done all this many times before as an elite athlete for almost a decade now. But these are also things that Sindhu has forgotten the muscle memory of somewhere between the physical and mental travails of 2023.

In all her big matches this year, the differences between a win and a loss have been as minor as a few bad line calls or inadvertent errors under pressure. Her opponents have noticed this and exploited it.

The final enemy to beat then, is her own mind. To stay in the moment and employ the right gameplan.

"The main aspect for her [now] is on the tactical front [where] she is supported," says Vimal.

"She can play a lot better and create openings because she has a good finishing stroke, and she has a good fitness. This is an area she can still get better at; she is doing the work."

Thus, the tactical awareness and initiative of the on-court coach will be vital in in her path in Paris. Padukone will be there visiting at the Olympics but there is a good chance that he may not be able to sit on the sidelines with her. Agus, then, will have to be more involved, pulling her out of her own head as much out of defensive rallies.

At the Asian Games, Sindhu alluded to the mental health struggles of Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka after her quarterfinal loss. Both those global superstars are back to being very good at their sport, and they have their smiles back.

Sindhu too has some of that spring back in her step. "I remember talking to her during the US Open and it didn't feel like mentally she was very confident or having fun on court," says Shlok. "But the way I'm seeing her play, she's looking aggressive, playing with that intent."

The task at hand for Sindhu and Team PVS (as they are called) is to prepare to peak for Paris tying together her prime fitness levels with tactical support and mental stability.

"It's like a car machinery, every part of the car has to be well oiled at the right time and it's only then you can fire," as Aparna puts it.

At Rio 2016, she was a promising youngster who stunned the Chinese world No 2 and provided the silver lining to a disastrous Olympic campaign.

At Tokyo 2021, she was the reigning world champion under immense pressure who fought back from a tough loss to go on and win a second Olympic medal.

At Paris 2024, she will somehow be a combination of both her previous Olympic avatars - a promising prospect with the pressure of matching up to her own previous, mighty standards.

It won't be easy. No women's singles player in badminton has won more than two Olympic medals. No Indian woman has won more than two Olympic medals. If there is one player who can do it, though, it is serial history-maker Sindhu.
