Doctor Who's Most Controversial Time Travel Gadget, Explained

• Vortex Manipulators are an integral part of Time Lord culture and were introduced in Season 1 of Doctor Who .
• Misuse of Vortex Manipulators by enemies can lead to disastrous consequences for the universe.
• Despite not being as iconic as the TARDIS, Vortex Manipulators play a huge role in expanding the Doctor Who universe.

Doctor Who is unanimous with time travel, making it one of the most integral sci-fi franchises in history. Alongside his trusty collection of companions, The Doctor also explores the galaxy with his TARDIS. As such, it's clear that without the TARDIS, The Doctor wouldn't get very far in space or time; thus making his adventures far less exciting.

Yet, the TARDIS isn't the only machine that can soar through the time vortex. In the 2005 reboot, the writers introduced the Vortex Manipulator, a smaller and more portable way to time travel. Thus, this device opened up a ton of doors, giving popular characters the prime opportunity to match up against their favorite Time Lord. But what exactly is this device, and what makes it so controversial within the Doctor Who canon?

Vortex Manipulators Are a Key Part of Time Lord Culture

• To date, Tom Baker is the longest-running Doctor, amassing 70 hours of screen time in just seven years.
• Season 17, Episode 7, "The City of Death," is still the most-watched episode of Doctor Who , garnering 16.10 million viewers worldwide.
• 97 episodes of Doctor Who are still missing after the BBC wiped a ton of content back in the 1970s.
• After Matt Smith became the 11th Doctor back in 2011, bow tie sales shot up by 94%.

Vortex Manipulators were first referenced in Season 1, Episode 9, "The Empty Child," and were already seen as an inferior comparison to the TARDIS. Traditionally, these devices were utilized by the elusive Time Agency as a way to travel throughout the time vortex without any extra weight. Complete with a thick leather strap and a small screen; these devices were regarded as a lot more cost-effective than a giant time machine. Plus, a lot like a chameleon circuit, these devices were designed to resemble a simple bracelet, meaning Time Lords could zoom across space and time without drawing too much attention to themselves. Another added bonus of a Vortex Manipulator is that it can transport multiple people at one time, making it easier for Time Agents to collect rogue travelers along their journey. Thus, at first glance, a vortex manipulator seems a lot more classy and practical than The Doctor's old TARDIS .

Yet, The Doctor has spent countless hours complaining about them, viewing them as "Space Hoppers" rather than actual time machines. Although Vortex Manipulators look fairly subtle and inconspicuous, they tend to have a very negative effect on the Time Lord race. For example, in a comic called Space in Dimension Relative and Time , the Eleventh Doctor admits that he was highly addicted to using Vortex Manipulators and was using them around 40 times a day in his youth. Admittedly, this is obviously a small joke, but this example effectively highlights why The Doctor looks down on these devices. Not only do they provide Time Lords with an addicting rush of freedom, but they are also seen to be a cheaper and less attractive option compared to the TARDIS. Moreover, The Doctor also views these devices as cheap and dirty, regarding them almost as a less environmentally friendly option. In turn, it's clear that the Time Lord is against this form of time travel as it doesn't work to protect the galaxy in the same way as the TARDIS.

The Device Can Lead to Very Negative Consequences When Placed in the Wrong Hands

• Gallifrey is often named the Shining World of the Seven Systems and is located in the constellation of Kasterborous.
• The Sonic Screwdriver made its first appearance during the Second Doctor's run in "Fury from the Deep."
• The TARDIS has a sinister Cloister Bell that is only triggered during times of extreme danger.

There's no denying that The Doctor sees his ability to time travel as a great responsibility and doesn't take it very lightly. Though, it seems that Vortex Manipulators are fairly accessible, even to his greatest enemies. In Season 3, Episode 8, "Human Nature," the audience discovers that a Vortex Manipulator has been obtained by The Family of Blood, and they plan to use it to kill the 10th Doctor. This is just one example of how, when placed in the wrong hands, Vortex Manipulators can wreak havoc across the galaxy. Plus, since these devices allow foes to follow The Doctor across time and space, like a glorified cat and mouse chase, he has very few places to hide away. Not to mention, these devices were commonly used by Time Agents, a highly exclusive group of individuals who were determined to change the course of history without being spotted, so it seems that their users are well-versed in how to operate them safely. So, when The Doctor's latest enemies have access to one, it begs the question of how much damage they could cause to the universe without being held accountable.

Some spin-off materials also note that frequent use of Vortex Manipulations can cause immense damage to a Time Agent as well as the rest of the time vortex. The Diary of River Song is a Big Finish audio drama that delves deeper into the hero's adventures as she leaves her husband behind and rekindles her love of archeology. In Season 4, Episode 2, "Kings of Infinite Space," Song explains that Vortex Manipulators drastically increase a user's exposure to the overwhelming power of the time vortex. This is mainly because they are not based in a separate dimension, so they don't provide a protective casing like the TARDIS does. Thus, in large doses, the time vortex could easily kill them, as well as the organic elements of the vortex. In turn, Vortex Manipulators are regarded as a much more dangerous and threatening option for time travelers as they have the potential to harm the user and the world around them. Although Vortex Manipulators are not as widely discussed as other Doctor Who gadgets like the sonic screwdriver , this small piece of information offers the audience a lot more detail about how time travel works within the franchise. As such, the audience is now aware that these devices are not necessarily more sleek and dynamic, but actually have a lot of negative consequences if used incorrectly.

Doctor Who is quite unique in the sense that the franchise is packed full of spin-off material and additional content. So, although Vortex Manipulators may only be referenced on screen a handful of times, they are a massive part of the show's canon. Most fans will relate Vortex Manipulators to Captain Jack Harkness , an infamous Time Agent who was also a leading member of Torchwood. Harkness used his Vortex Manipulator to travel to unknown planets with his peers and also used it to keep up with The Doctor's whereabouts. Though it would be incorrect to say that Harkness is The Doctor's exact counterpart, the pair often use time travel to help each other defeat threats against Earth. In a similar vein, Vortex Manipulators were used by characters like Missy and River Song so that they could keep a close eye on The Doctor and stay on his tail no matter what. Overall, it seems that Vortex Manipulators were designed to help others travel through space and time so that the Time Lord didn't always have the upper hand.

Although Vortex Manipulators are not exactly the most glamorous gadget in the Doctor Who canon, they help to expand the audience's understanding of time travel and ensure that everyone can keep up with The Doctor. Admittedly, these devices are nowhere near as iconic as the TARDIS, but that's beside the point. Vortex Manipulators were created to give fans another aspect to focus on, ensuring that characters like River Song, Captain Jack, and Professor Yana can expand their arcs through a plethora of bonus material. As the latest reboot continues to redefine the extent of this show, it seems unlikely that fans will spot a Vortex Manipulator on screen any time soon. But that doesn't mean that they've been wiped from the canon forever.

It’s typically depicted in one of two ways: a plot device where characters must go back in time to prevent something from happening, or a game mechanic in which players manipulate time to overcome challenges.

One of the more recent titles to explore this trope is Deathloop , an immersive sim shooter about a talented hitman who finds himself trapped in time on a party island with rival assassins.

The Forgotten City

Set during an alternate version of the Roman Empire, it sees you exploring a city subjected to the Golden Rule: a religious mandate where any sinful action causes the entire population to turn into permanent gold statues.

While inspecting the rule’s origins and which transgressions it applies to, you’re advised someone in the city intends to violate it, urging you to travel back in time to prevent them.

It’s an interesting take on time travel that also explores the existential relationship between humanity and its laws, namely what is truly considered right or wrong.

Returnal is a PlayStation-exclusive third-person shooter about an astronaut who lands on an alien planet searching for a mysterious signal when she suddenly finds herself trapped in a time loop.

This is a great justification for the game’s roguelike design, which sees the protagonist resurrected after each death as she traverses the planet’s foreign environments and battles a host of extraterrestrial foes.

The further you progress, the stranger and more unsettling Selene’s visions become as she finds herself increasingly entangled in an ever-changing world.

If you manage to make it to the end and break the loop, you’ll be faced with some startling revelations about the main character and the planet that make for great sci-fi storytelling.

Although time travel generally involves going forward or backward in history, you can extend this further to account for multiple realities or planes of existence.

With this mindset, one could argue that the horror game The Medium uses time travel as a game mechanic, with the main character able to travel between the spirit world and the living world.

The story follows psychic Marianne as she’s mysteriously summoned to an abandoned hotel where she’ll have to use her powers to unravel its history and help free the spirits trapped within its grounds.

Reminiscence

Reminiscence is a story-driven, psychological horror game that has you warping, jumping, and rewinding time and space in order to save your family.

In it, you play as a man living in a world that’s about to collapse into anarchy who suddenly discovers their wife and kids have mysteriously disappeared.

While searching your home for clues, you stumble upon a watch that lets you travel between two eras: the post-apocalyptic present, and 1950s American suburbia.

By switching back and forth between both realities, you’re able to alter the state of certain objects to solve puzzles and advance the story.

Inspired by sci-fi classics like Back to the Future, No Time sees you stealing a suspiciously familiar time machine vehicle from a secret facility before setting off on a time-traveling adventure.

Unlike many games in the genre which center on heavily scripted missions, the game functions as a time travel simulator with both story and sandbox elements.

As a result, you’re free to explore any date throughout history from 0-2030 AD while making sure not to destroy the current timeline by interfering as little as possible and avoiding your younger self.

The game also features a day/night cycle, various job minigames and side quests, crafting, and a combat system for dealing with pesky Time Agents. 

Outer Wilds

The narrative addresses various sci-fi clichés such as black holes, antimatter, and of course time travel, with your character confined in an everlasting 22-minute time loop.

This is complemented by a densely packed open world consisting of hand-crafted, explorable planets with interesting backstories and distinct hazards that can be tricky to navigate.

Twelve Minutes

Twelve Minutes is an interactive thriller about a man having a romantic dinner with his wife when a mysterious man claiming to be a police detective shows up on his doorstep.

Things quickly escalate and eventually the man is killed, only to find himself transported to the beginning of the evening with his previous memories intact.

Confused and desperate, he sets out to break the time loop by searching the apartment for clues and interviewing each person involved.

While some of the game’s different endings get into weird, taboo territory, there are interesting puzzles and narrative threads to tug at that make the journey worthwhile, though we suggest following a guide.

In the stealth puzzle adventure game Timelie , every second matters and can bring you one step closer to freedom or death.

The game has you taking on the role of a young woman with a special gift that lets her control the flow of time as if it were a media player, rewinding and fast-forwarding to gain new insights. 

Harnessing this power allows her to manipulate obstacles in her path and avoid detection from robot patrols preventing her from leaving.

The Gardens Between

The Gardens Between is an indie puzzle game created by The Voxel Agents that has you manipulating time 20 abstract, narrative-driven levels.

The game is unique in that you don’t control the main characters directly but rather move them backward and forwards through time while altering the state of different objects to progress.

Each level reveals more about the relationship between the two main characters, Arian and Frendt, chronicling the evolution of their friendship leading up to a life-changing event.

While it’s a short-lived experience, clocking in around 2.5 hours, The Gardens Between tells a compelling story and explores time travel mechanics in some fun and interesting ways.

Timespinner

Inspired by ‘90s action-platformers, Timespinner is a story-driven Metroidvania about a magical timekeeper named Lunais who seeks out revenge after her family is murdered by an evil empire.

Her quest for justice brings her to a mysterious and hostile world where she’ll have no choice but to wield her time manipulation power to defend herself and rewrite history.

The game has you exploring beautiful, atmospheric pixel art environments while switching between the past and present as you defeat enemies and acquire new powers.

Life Is Strange

A standout adventure title from Dontnod Studios and published by Square Enix, Life is Strange follows 18-year old aspiring photographer Max Caulfield as she comes to terms with her newfound powers.

Max has a supernatural ability that lets her move backward or forwards through time to alter the state of objects and their effect on the people around her.

Its applications vary depending on the scenario, allowing Max to mend relationships with her friends and family, solve bigger mysteries, and get revenge against the occasional bully.

Even if the gameplay aspect falls flat at times, the way time travel is introduced and incorporated into the structure of the story makes up for it.

Quantum Break

Quantum Break is a cinematic action game from Remedy Games, best known for titles like Control and Alan Wake, and Max Payne.

In it, you take on the role of Jack Joyce, a man on a mission to prevent his timeline from ending by harnessing an array of unique time-based powers.

The story doubles as a live-action television series with certain events explained in further detail, which can require a bit more of a commitment than your average game.

With that said, Quantum Break is one of the best-looking time travel games in terms of graphical fidelity, boasting cool mind-bending camera tricks and special effects that still look great in 2025.

Superhot  sets itself apart from more traditional  FPS games  by introducing one clever mechanic: time only moves forward when you do.

This grants the player ample time to assess threats and determine the best course of action before setting it in motion with stylish shootouts and melee showdowns.

To ensure combat is always readable, the game employs a minimalist art style that does a great job at conveying info: enemies are always red, environments are white, and weapons are black.

While it’s best enjoyed in VR with full immersion, you’ll still have a lot of fun playing with a gamepad controller or just mouse and keyboard. 

Titanfall 2

The follow-up to Respawn’s criminally underrated  first-person shooter  features refined gunplay and fluid movement with a touch of time travel.

During Titanfall 2 ’s campaign, your character obtains a special wrist-mounted device that lets them swap back and forth between the past and present.  

This is helpful for exploring deteriorating buildings, avoiding clusters of foes, and solving nature-based challenges as pilot Jack Cooper.

Combine this with exciting parkour-based platforming and an arsenal of satisfyingly powerful weaponry and it’s easy to see why Titanfall fans want to see the series return.

BioShock Infinite

Time travel in the BioShock series is presented as a plot device in which certain characters, namely Elizabeth and the Lutece twins, can create dimensional time-alternating portals called Tears.

To that point, the game’s take on parallel universes and how they affect the overarching story can be boiled down to a single quote: “There’s always a lighthouse, there’s always a man, there’s always a city.”

BioShock Infinite sees you venturing into a floating steampunk city called Columbia where citizens still cling to violent religious and racist beliefs.

While these Pokemon being able to control time is interesting in itself, it would be fun to see this explored more deeply in the series too.

6 Possessing Time: Rotom

Rotom is an Electric and Ghost-type Pokemon that has the ability to change forms by possessing inanimate objects. It can also inhabit mobile phones and the Pokedex, such as in Scarlet & Violet and Sun & Moon . According to various Pokedex entries, Rotom can use its electronic abilities to “wreak havoc” and “make mischief,” with Scarlet’s entry saying that it “smirks with satisfaction over a prank well pulled.” However, in the anime, Rotom’s ability is much more useful.

In Rotom’s Wish, Rotom uses its abilities to possess an elevator to send Ash and his friends back in time, hoping to change an event in the past. It’s interesting to see how Rotom’s abilities can be used with different appliances - if it can control time by simply possessing an elevator, what else can it do?

5 Ancient Traveler: Baltoy

Known as the Clay Doll Pokemon, Baltoy resembles pottery from the Jōmon period. In fact, Baltoy “was discovered in ancient ruins” according to multiple of its Pokedex entries. Although its connections to these ancient ruins haven’t been explored much in the game series, the Pokemon anime discusses not only the ancient civilization Baltoy was a part of, but also how its abilities were used in conjunction with their creations.

In Me, Myself, and Time Baltoy traveled to the past alongside its trainer, Callista, using an ancient artifact, in the hopes of encouraging Callista’s younger self to continue researching the ruins associated with Baltoy. To travel through time, Baltoy positions itself in the center of the artifact and spins to activate it, taking others and itself to different time periods.

4 Rift In Time: Giratina

The Legendary Pokemon Giratina was banished by Arceus for its violence, and took to residing in the Distortion World, a strange parallel universe. In Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Volo sought out Giratina, and then used their shared interest in Arceus to encourage it to create the space-time rift above Hisui.

This rift caused smaller space-time distortions to appear across the region, which transport Pokemon from the future to ancient Hisui. Giratina has the power to tear the fabric of time itself, displacing Pokemon in the process.

3 Traveler Of The Forest: Celebi

Celebi is known as the Time Travel Pokemon and resides in Ilex Forest in the Johto region. In multiple of Celebi’s Pokedex entries, it says that it “has the power to travel across time.” However, it will only come “in peaceful times,” meaning that seeing Celebi is guaranteed to be a good omen. In terms of appearance, Celebi resembles a fairy with a plant-bulb-like head, highlighting its connection to the forest and nature.

Celebi’s ability to time travel has been explored in other Pokemon media, most notably the movie, Celebi: The Voice of the Forest. In the movie, Celebi uses its power to escape a Pokemon poacher who was hunting it, traveling to the future. It would be interesting if Celebi’s time travel abilities were explored in a mainline installment, allowing you to time travel with it, similar to the movie.

2 Time Itself: Dialga

In the Pokemon universe, Dialga is the embodiment of time and is known as the Temporal Pokemon. In various of Dialga’s Pokedex entries, it’s said that it has “the power to control time” and that “time began moving when Dialga was born.” It’s an important Pokemon in Sinnoh’s creation story alongside Arceus, Palkia, and Giratina because of its role as the guardian of time.

Dialga’s design and name are perhaps references to sundials, a device used to tell the time using sunlight. It’s also the only Pokemon capable of learning the move Roar of Time, a Dragon-type move that “distorts even time,” showings its mastery over the domain of time. Rather than simply manipulating time, Dialga, in Sinnoh lore, is the equivalent of time itself with incomprehensible power.

1 The Creator: Arceus

Arceus is the Pokemon universe’s closest thing to a god , as it’s believed to have “shaped the universe” according to various Pokedex entries. In Sinnoh mythology, Arceus is the creator of all things, including Dialga; as a result, it created time itself, too. It’s unsurprising that Arceus can control time, considering that it supposedly existed before anything else.

Arceus’ connection to time was showcased in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, as it appears at the beginning of the game to send you back in time to the Hisui region to “seek out all Pokemon.” Despite this, its Pokedex entries don’t mention its ability to control time at all - this power is just a footnote in all the things it can do.

Time Travel: Theories, Possibilities, and Paradoxes Explained

Time Travel has been a matter of great interest for Science fiction since ages. Whether it’s the movies like Planet of the Apes (1968) or modern franchises like “Doctor Who” and “Star Trek” ; the concept is grabbing a lot of eyeballs. Not only movies and shows but even some mythological tales like Mahabharata and the Japanese story of Urashima Taro support the evidence that time travel exists. We often see stories where characters use time machines to jaunt through the years but the reality is far more complex and inexplicable.

Understanding the Concept of Time Travel

Time Travel is defined as the phenomenon of moving between different points in time through a hypothetical device called “Time Machine”. Despite being predominantly related to the field of philosophy and fiction, it’s somehow supported to a small extent by physics in conjunction with quantum mechanics. However, before getting into the argument of how real it is, let’s comprehend the fundamental meaning of time.

Basically, the whole idea of Time Travel is administered by the concept of time. Usually, people believe that time is constant but the famous Physicist Albert Einstein introduced the “Theory of Relativity” as per which, time is relative. In other words, time slows down or speeds up depending on how fast the observer moves relative to something else. According to him, a person traveling inside a spaceship at the speed of light would age much slower than his/her twin back at home.

Time is Relative

After Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, his teacher Herman Minkowski emphasized on space-time, a mathematical model that joins both space and time in a continuum. This implies that time and space cannot exist without each other. Space is a 3-dimensional arena consisting of length, width, and height. This is joined by Time with the fourth dimension called direction. So anything that happens in the universe takes place in this space-time continuum. Although this validates that space travelers are slightly younger than their twins when they return to earth, yet a huge leap in the past or future is not possible with the current technology.

Time Machines

It is believed that in order to travel back or forward in time, one would require a device called Time Machine . The research on such a device would involve bending space-time to such an extent that time lines turn back on themselves to form a loop, which is termed as “closed time-like curve.” Such an action demands the use of an exotic form of matter with “negative energy density” that has a unique property of moving in the opposite direction of the normal matter when pushed. Even if it exists, the quantity would be too small to construct a machine.

However, some another research suggests that time machines can also be constructed by building a doughnut-shaped hole enveloped within a sphere of normal matter. Inside this doughnut-shaped hole filled with vacuum, gravitational force can be used to bend the space-time so as to form a closed time-like curve. After racing around inside this doughnut a traveler would be able to go back in time with each lap. But in reality, it’s quite complex because the gravitational fields have to be very strong and would demand precise manipulation.

Time Travel Approaches in Physics

After studying and researching about Time Travel, various physicists have come up with approaches that may support its possibility, at least theoretically. Let’s take a look at these concepts so as to understand how Time Travel could actually work someday.

Time Dilation

An important aspect of Einstein’s relativity theory is the term “time dilation” , which is defined as the difference of elapsed time between two events as measured by observers who are either moving relative to each other or are situated at different locations from the gravitational mass. As per the theory, time dilation can be summarized as a phenomenon which occurs due to the difference in either gravity or relative velocity.

In special relativity the time dilation effect is reciprocal i.e. when two clocks are in motion with respect to each other, for both the observers, the other one will be time dilated or the other clock will move slower. However, in general relativity, an observer at the top of the tower will find the clock closer to the ground to be slower and the other observer would agree about the direction and magnitude of this difference.

Due to the concept of time dilation, the current human time travel record is held by Russian cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev . Owing to the high-speed (7.66 km/s) of ISS and the length of time spent in space, it is believed that the cosmonaut actually arrived 0.02 seconds in the future while returning to the earth.

Cosmic String

In 1991 J Richard Gott gave the idea of Cosmic Strings , which are believed to be left over from the early cosmos. These are defined as string-like objects or narrow tubes of energy that are stretched across the entire length of the universe. Owing to the huge amount of mass and massive gravitational pull, it would allow objects attached to the Cosmic Strings to travel at the speed of light.

So if two strings are pulled close to each other or one of them is stretched near the black hole, it might warp space-time to such an extent that would lead to creating a closed time-like curve and hence leading to the possibility of time travel. Theoretically, the gravity generated by these two Cosmic strings would help in propelling a spaceship into the past.

However, coming to the reality, the loop of strings is required to contain half the mass-energy of an entire galaxy so as to travel one year back in time. This implies that powering a time machine would require splitting half the atoms present in the whole galaxy.

Black holes

When stars (having a mass of more than four times our sun) reach their end of life and all their fuel is burned up, they collapse under the pressure of their own weight creating “Black Holes” . The boundary of a Black Hole, called Event Horizon , has such a strong gravitational pull that it doesn’t even allow light to pass through it. Since light travels at the fastest speed, everything else traveling through a black hole is also dragged back. Such a non-rotating black hole is named as Schwarzschild black hole .

However, traveling to a parallel universe is possible through a rotating black hole named Kerr Hole . It was proposed in 1963 by a mathematician named Roy Kerr . As per his theory, if dying stars collapse into a rotating ring of neutron stars, that would produce enough centrifugal force to prevent the formation of singularity.

Note: Singularity can be perceived as the point into which the black hole tapers much like an ice-cream cone. At this point, the laws of Physics cease to exist and all the matter is crushed beyond recognition.

Since there will be no singularity, it would be safe to pass through a black hole without being crushed and exit out of a “White Hole” . A white hole is believed to be the exhaust end of a black hole which pushes everything away from it. Hence we may travel into another time or even another universe.

Although Kerr Holes are just theoretical, if they exist then we may find our way to a one-way trip to the past or future. However, physicist Kip Thorne believes that such a black hole doesn’t exist and it would suck everything before someone even reaches the Singularity.

Wormholes, also known as Einstein-Rosen Bridges , are believed to be the most potential means for time travel. It could allow us to travel several light years from earth and in much less time as compared to the conventional space travel methods. The possibility of wormholes is based on Einstein’s theory of relativity which says that any mass curves space-time. The following example is used to explain this curvature.

If two persons are holding a bed sheet stretching it tight and a baseball is placed on the sheet, its weight will make it roll to the middle of the sheet creating a curve at that point. Now if a marble is placed on the sheet, it would travel towards the baseball because of the curve. Here space is depicted as a two-dimensional plane than the four dimensions that actually makes up space-time.

Now if this sheet is folded over leaving a space at the top and bottom, placing the baseball on the top would form a curvature. If an equal mass is placed at the bottom part at a point corresponding to the location of the baseball, the second mass would eventually meet with the baseball. Similarly, wormholes might develop.

In space, masses that place pressure on different parts of the universe combine together to form a tunnel. Theoretically, this tunnel joins two separate times and allows passage between them. However, it’s possible that certain unforeseen physical properties may prevent the occurrence of wormholes and even if they exist, these might be really unstable.

Possibly someday human may learn to capture, stabilize and enlarge these tunnels but according to Dr. Hawking, prolonging the life of a tunnel through folded space-time may lead to a radiation feedback loop destroying the time tunnel.

Time Travel Paradoxes

If we ever work out a theory for time travel, we would give way to certain complexities known as paradoxes. A paradox is something that contradicts itself. In other words, time travel is not believed to be a practical concept because of certain situations that are likely to arise as the after-effects. These are broadly classified as -:

1. Closed Casual Loops: The cause and effect run in a circle causing a loop and is also internally consistent with the timeline’s history.

• Predestination Paradox

It is defined as a situation when a traveler going back in time causes the event which he is trying to prevent from happening. It implies that any attempt to stop any event from occurring in the past would simply lead to the cause itself. The paradox suggests that things are destined to turn out the way they have happened and anyone attempting to change the past would find himself trapped in the repeating loop of time. For example, if you travel in the past to prevent your lover from dying in a road accident, you will find out that you were the one who accidentally ran over her.

• Bootstrap Paradox

A bootstrap paradox, also known as an Ontological Paradox where an object, person, or piece of information sent back in time leads to an infinite loop where the object has no discernible origin and is believed to exist without ever being created. It implies that the past, present and future and not defined, thus making it complicated to pinpoint the origin of anything. It raises questions like how were the objects created and by whom.

2. Consistency Paradox: It generates a number of timeline inconsistencies related to the possibility of altering the past. It can be further divided into the following categories.

• The Grandfather Paradox

Grandfather Paradox

This paradox talks about a hypothetical situation where a person travels back in time and kills his paternal grandfather at the time when his grandfather didn’t even meet his grandmother. In such a situation, his father would never have been born and neither would the traveler himself. So if he was never born, how would he travel to the past to kill his grandfather?

The paradox also talks about auto-infanticide where a time traveler goes into the past to kill himself when he was an infant. Now if he killed himself when he was a kid, how would he exist in the future to come back in time? Some physicists say that you would be able to go back in time but you won’t be able to change it, while others suggest that you would be born in one universe but unborn in another universe.

• The Hitler Paradox

Similar to the grandfather paradox, the killing Hitler paradox erases the reason for which you would want to go into the past and kill Hitler. Moreover, killing grandfather might have a “butterfly effect” but killing Hitler would have a far-reaching impact on the History as it would change the whole course of events. If you were successful in killing Hitler, there’d be no reason that would make you want to go back in time and kill him.

This paradox has been explained very well in a Twilight Zone episode called “Cradle of Darkness” as well as an episode “Let’s Kill Her” from Dr. Who.

• Polchinski’s Paradox

American physicist Joseph Polchinski proposed a paradox where a billiard ball enters a wormhole and emerges out of the other end in the past just in time to collide with its younger version and prevents it from entering the wormhole in the first place. While proposing this scenario, Joseph had Novikov’s Self Consistency Principle in his mind which states that time travel is possible but time paradoxes are forbidden.

A number of solutions have been suggested to avoid these inconsistencies like the billiard ball will deliver a blow which changes the course of the younger version of the ball but it would not stop it from entering the wormhole. This also explains that if you go back in time to kill your grandfather then something or the other will happen to prevent you from making it happen thus preserving the consistency of the History.

Solutions for the Paradoxes

In order to come up with a solution for these above-mentioned paradoxes, scientists have proposed some explanations which are enlisted below

The Solution: Time Travel is impossible because of the paradoxes that it creates.

Self-Healing Hypothesis: If we succeed to change the events in the past, it will set off another set of events that will keep the present unchanged.

The Multiverse: Every time an event in the past is altered, an alternate parallel universe or timeline is created.

Erased Timeline Hypothesis: A person traveling to the past would exist in the new timeline but their own timeline would be erased.

Is Time Travel Possible?

Nobody seems to have a definite answer in support or against the existence of Time Travel. On one hand, Einstein suggested to traveling at the speed of light in order to jaunt through the future but this would mean an unimaginable amount of energy would be required. Moreover, the centrifugal force on the body would prove to be fatal. Although it has been observed that space travelers age a little slower as compared to their identical twin on earth but some believe that there is no definite answer to travel back in space.

Theoretical physicist Brian Greene of Columbia University says that “No one has given a definite proof that you can’t travel to the past. But every time we look at the proposals and detail it seems kind of clear that they’re right at the edge of the known laws of physics.” Besides, Prof. Hawking feels that “Today’s science fiction is tomorrow’s science fact.”

However, the paradoxes, especially the grandfather paradox, have imposed a big question mark on the possibility of Time Travel. Basically, with the present laws and knowledge of Physics, the human won’t be able to survive in the process of Time Travel. So, we need certain developments in the quantum theories till we are sure as to how the paradoxes can be solved.

52:00 MICHAEL: Well, when when time travel was actually accomplished, was there a lot of excitement, a lot of attention? I mean, this to me is a very significant thing.

LARRY: Well, I don't know that there was so much excitement per se. There may have been for other people. It was more like, “Well, you know, we've been working on this for years, and we've picked it apart and picked it apart and picked it apart, and finally we've got something here. And we've obtained our goal, and we've already prepared what we're going to do with it by this point.

MICHAEL: But just say, from the outside—I mean all the people who were spending the billions of dollars—I would imagine there must have been some showing of gratitude and pleasure or whatever that this thing had finally been accomplished. Or was it all just so robotic?

LARRY: I'm sure there was.

MICHAEL: No champagne bottles popping, corks flying in the air? You know, “Wow, we have time travel!”

LARRY: No, it's just basically, “Okay, we finally achieved our objective. All right, now let's continue on doing what we wanted to do.

MICHAEL: So, you guys didn't party much down there, did you?

LARRY: We didn’t. I'm sure others did, but we didn’t. We had finally achieved another phase, basically. I mean, you didn't party every time you achieved a new phase.

MICHAEL: Well, we do around here.

LARRY: Well, some people do.

MICHAEL: We look forward to the next phase. So, everybody I talked to on this project, I always get the sense that it was very focused, very strict, very unemotional.

LARRY: You almost had to be with it.

MICHAEL: Yeah, very unemotional. That's why the partying wasn't there. It was like, “Okay, boom. We're done, now let's move to the next thing.” Almost like, you know, you were controlled in a sense.

LARRY: We knew that we were working on something big, and it's something that is bigger than the average person. And so, the average person is going to have a hard time dealing with it to begin with, period. And of course, you also have to be prepared for abuses as far as, once you have something as sensitive as time control, you want to be careful with it, because you don't want it falling into the wrong hands.

MICHAEL: What could happen if it did fall into the wrong hands?

55:00 LARRY: Oh let's say you get a world leader who’s— like Saddam Hussein, who even his own people consider mad to a certain extent, and he wants to use it to change the Gulf War. I mean, that's very dangerous stuff there. So, yeah, you want to keep it out of his hands, just like you want to keep a nuke out of that man's hands.

MICHAEL: Well, hopefully, it is so complicated that someone like him could not replicate the work you did.

LARRY: Well, see, that was the thing: what we were doing, as we were making our breakthroughs, we were simplifying, also, so it became easier as time went on.

MICHAEL: So, I mean, theoretically—here it is 2000—it's possible, say, 2010, if Saddam Hussein was still alive, [that] he gives someone a billion dollars, buys one of these machines, and goes back and changes the outcome of the war.

LARRY: Yeah, and that's why it has to be— We knew at the time that you have to be very careful with this, make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands.

MICHAEL: But you and I just yesterday looked at some catalogs where you can buy some of this equipment.

LARRY: Well, yeah. Government contractors build the equipment, but unless you know what it's for, it doesn’t do you much good, I mean, you can use it for different applications, I’m sure, but—

MICHAEL: Right. Like microwaving eggs on the side of a roof, but not time travel, right? Because there's a lot of different pieces involved.

LARRY: Yeah, a lot of different pieces involved. You have to hit the right frequencies.

MICHAEL: Right, and you can't do that with just one piece of equipment. Who do you actually think has time-travel capability right now?

LARRY: There's actually more than one group. Once we had made our breakthroughs—and we were able to still work quite privately for awhile without many people knowing about it—other groups started getting involved and wanting to take control for their own personal gain. And so, things kind of got out of control there, which is what we were trying to avoid. But there again, if you want to keep a secret, you keep it to yourself.

MICHAEL: But here's this is what I think our listeners are going to find find challenging, mentally challenging to process. We had talked earlier that you went back and actually re-engineered the outcome of the Civil War.

LARRY: Yes.

58:00 MICHAEL: So, could I assume then that up to that point in time—say, up to 1980—that the South had actually won the Civil War?

LARRY: Well, see, that's on a different time plane, though. It's in a parallel universe. As we talked before, we know that there are several parallel universes. And we can assume that, yeah, that did happen that way, but in a parallel universe.

MICHAEL: But if you wanted to go back and change that— For instance, when you were in the early 1980s and had undertaken that project to go back and change the outcome of the Civil War—

LARRY: Yeah.

MICHAEL: —what was your reality at that point in time? Was it that the South had won, or was it that the North had won?

LARRY: I believe at that time that was the South that had won, and that was one of the things that we had changed.

MICHAEL: Okay. So, you're saying only for the group of people that were involved in the project do they have any memory of that reality.

LARRY: That's true.

MICHAEL: All the rest of us, myself included—

LARRY: —have an alternate reality.

MICHAEL: —have an alternate reality where all we can remember and experience is that the North had won.

LARRY: That's correct.

MICHAEL: That's hard to buy. But you're saying that's correct.

MICHAEL: And I'm not saying that that that's wrong; I'm just saying you have to really expand your mind to think about that.

Is Time Travel Possible?

We all travel in time! We travel one year in time between birthdays, for example. And we are all traveling in time at approximately the same speed: 1 second per second.

NASA's space telescopes also give us a way to look back in time. Telescopes help us see stars and galaxies that are very far away . It takes a long time for the light from faraway galaxies to reach us. So, when we look into the sky with a telescope, we are seeing what those stars and galaxies looked like a very long time ago.

However, when we think of the phrase "time travel," we are usually thinking of traveling faster than 1 second per second. That kind of time travel sounds like something you'd only see in movies or science fiction books. Could it be real? Science says yes!

How do we know that time travel is possible?

More than 100 years ago, a famous scientist named Albert Einstein came up with an idea about how time works. He called it relativity. This theory says that time and space are linked together. Einstein also said our universe has a speed limit: nothing can travel faster than the speed of light (186,000 miles per second).

What does this mean for time travel? Well, according to this theory, the faster you travel, the slower you experience time. Scientists have done some experiments to show that this is true.

For example, there was an experiment that used two clocks set to the exact same time. One clock stayed on Earth, while the other flew in an airplane (going in the same direction Earth rotates).

After the airplane flew around the world, scientists compared the two clocks. The clock on the fast-moving airplane was slightly behind the clock on the ground. So, the clock on the airplane was traveling slightly slower in time than 1 second per second.

Can we use time travel in everyday life?

We can't use a time machine to travel hundreds of years into the past or future. That kind of time travel only happens in books and movies. But the math of time travel does affect the things we use every day.

NASA scientists also use a high-accuracy version of GPS to keep track of where satellites are in space. But did you know that GPS relies on time-travel calculations to help you get around town?

GPS satellites orbit around Earth very quickly at about 8,700 miles (14,000 kilometers) per hour. This slows down GPS satellite clocks by a small fraction of a second (similar to the airplane example above).

However, the satellites are also orbiting Earth about 12,550 miles (20,200 km) above the surface. This actually speeds up GPS satellite clocks by a slighter larger fraction of a second.

Here's how: Einstein's theory also says that gravity curves space and time, causing the passage of time to slow down. High up where the satellites orbit, Earth's gravity is much weaker. This causes the clocks on GPS satellites to run faster than clocks on the ground.

The combined result is that the clocks on GPS satellites experience time at a rate slightly faster than 1 second per second. Luckily, scientists can use math to correct these differences in time.

If scientists didn't correct the GPS clocks, there would be big problems. GPS satellites wouldn't be able to correctly calculate their position or yours. The errors would add up to a few miles each day, which is a big deal. GPS maps might think your home is nowhere near where it actually is!

In Summary:

Yes, time travel is indeed a real thing. But it's not quite what you've probably seen in the movies. Under certain conditions, it is possible to experience time passing at a different rate than 1 second per second. And there are important reasons why we need to understand this real-world form of time travel.
