Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie during the Rome premiere of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Tom Cruise and director/co-writer Christopher McQuarrie introduced the world premiere of Paramount /Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in Rome on Monday evening.

Fresh from a stroll up the Spanish Steps in the heart of the city (a car chase in the film takes place on the famous stone staircase and in the Piazza di Spagne), Cruise and McQuarrie took the stage in the Auditorium della Conciliazione and in opening comments thanked “the people of Rome” and the local governments in Rome and Venice.

Cruise, who was indefatigable today in taking time with everyone on the red carpet (so much so the movie screening started later than planned because it was such a big day), recalled what it took to pull off the film.

“Everyone knows when we shot this film here, and what was going on in the world,” he said onstage. And had it not been for every person in the entire community, to work with us — all the way from the restaurants in the streets, the police everyone on the road to government and medical staff — to make sure that we’re all safe and to create what we’re going to create this evening,” he said. “I just want you to know every day we were on the phone and working together to keep everything going to bring work to people, to raise the bar to people. And I want to say that the people came to visit daily to say hello to us and encourage us — it was a very beautiful time.”

Tom Cruise Mission Impossible 7 World Premiere

Tom Cruise made an impassioned speech about cinemagoing from Rome’s Spanish Steps at the world premiere of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.”

“There is a community that we are all part of — different cultures and ways of life, we all join together to enjoy cinema,” said Cruise, dressed in a crisp blue suit and wearing aviator shades. “It’s something that I grew up with, that made me and inspired me to dream and want to travel the world.

Popular on Variety

“He’s had a hand in every single film I’ve made over the past 16 years,” Cruise declared. “Uncredited, he wrote ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” He’s had a hand in editing and writing every single I’ve ever done. He is my creative brother and an exceptional human being.”

Cruise, who reprises his role as Ethan Hunt in Paramount’s latest tentpole, added: “I want to thank Rome and the city. And also we got to film in Venice, which was extraordinary, during some very difficult times in this country. I dreamed to be coming here and [sharing] it with all of you.”

The seventh installment of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise was partly filmed in the Italian capital, where the cobblestoned streets provided the perfect pavement for drifting cars burning rubber in numerous hair-raising chases that are likely to go down in action film history. The Spanish Steps, by the Piazza di Spagna, is the setting of a wild car chase involving a massive Hummer chasing a tiny vintage yellow Fiat 500 driven by Cruise and Hayley Atwell, who are handcuffed.

Cruise came to Italy with director McQuarrie and an ensemble cast of returning talents including Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby on the red carpet. Franchise newcomers Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham and Greg Tarzan Davis were also among those who made the trek to the Eternal City for the launch.

Atwell, who plays thief and agent of chaos Grace, told Variety during a weekend junket that she trained for months on a race track with stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood for her Rome chase. Only after her hardcore training did she arrive in Rome to work alongside Cruise, who was determined to keep the stunts as real as possible.

“I was handcuffed to Tom Cruise, who is in the passenger seat,” Atwell recalled. “Both Wade and Tom said: ‘We want you to go in front of this monument, do some 360 doughnuts, drift in, drift out, dodge cars and keep going.'”

During this feat, Atwell was told that “Tom’s going to be suggesting lines to you [while] he’s going to be acting as Ethan. But he also might give you moments of direction, too. Like: ‘turn left’ or ‘slow down,’” she said.

So Atwell’s challenge, as she was drifting, was to work out: “Is Tom as a producer telling me as Hayley to slow down because something is unsafe? Or is he as Ethan telling Grace to slow down?”

“It was an amazing day,” Atwell noted. After it was over, McQuarrie took her out to lunch and said: ‘Tom put his life in your hands today. That was no small thing,’” she added.

By contrast, Pom Klementieff – who plays the psychopathic villain Paris – didn’t train at all for scenes in which she drives the Hummer in pursuit of the yellow Fiat as it comes darting down the ancient staircase filled with screaming people who are jumping and running.

For Klementieff, the hard part was “not having too much fun doing it,” she said during the junket. “I was trying not to laugh the whole time, because for me it was so funny to be chasing a Fiat [500] … in this crazy Hummer.”

“ I had to tone it down a bit. I had to remember that I’m a villain,” she laughed. But Klementieff also noted “that some of that [irony] is in the movie, of course!”

Paramount’s July 12 U.S. release of “Mission: Impossible 7” – which also shot in England, Abu Dhabi and Norway – was pushed back several times from its original planned 2021 launch date due to pandemic-related setbacks.

In February 2021, the movie was forced to halt production in Italy, days before its planned shoot in Venice, as the country contended with one of the highest COVID death rates in Europe.

“In every city we were in across the world, it was the middle of COVID,” she added. “So it was amazing that they got the system [COVID production protocol] in place — and Tom drove it.”

Tom Cruise Spotted in Rome for Filming of 'Mission: Impossible 7' [Video]

Tom Cruise waving from car while filming Mission Impossible 7 in Rome

Superstar Tom Cruise is in Rome for the filming of “Mission: Impossible 7,” the seventh installment of the famous action spy series, where Cruise plays the role of Ethan Hunt, an agent of the Impossible Missions Force.

Cruise and co-star Hayley Atwell were spotted filming on the famous Via dei Fori Imperiali, the long boulevard that cuts across the Imperial Fora area, the monumental public squares of ancient Rome, between Piazza Venezia and the Colosseum.

“The scene revolved around a car chase with a black BMW M5 and several Italian ‘ polizia ’ (police) cars, in addition to a motorcycle and a special forces police truck,” reports Euronews.

Cruise waved at cameras and was smiling.

According to ANSA, shooting will take place in different parts of Rome's historic center, including the area around Castel Sant’Angelo and Rione Monti.

“This is a very big economic and organizational commitment, while adopting scrupulous measures to prevent the spread of the virus, with daily tests for the entire crew and cast, and the disinfection of sets and equipment,” said Rome city council, who also stressed how “major international productions are continuing to choose Rome,” with 596 requests to the cinema office between June and August, up from 583 in the same period last year.

“Mission: Impossible 7,” directed by Christopher McQuarrie, is scheduled to be released in November 2021 by Paramount Pictures.

Tom Cruise, director Christopher McQuarrie and the cast of 'Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One' at the film's world premiere in Rome

The lucky few managed to snag a Mission Impossible 7 -branded umbrella. There were dozens of them, neatly arranged on the marble banisters of the Spanish Steps, the majestic staircase of Rome’s Piazza di Spagna that is no stranger to large-scale social events, but rarely finds itself the center of a global premiere like this: The bow of Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One .

Cannes film festival 2024 poster unveiled, sony pictures classics to re-release 4k version of 'run lola run' for 25th anniversary.

The undisputed star on this very hot Roman afternoon is Tom Cruise . That quintessential action actor, who, while almost 61, continues to astound the world with increasingly reckless stunts and seemingly inexhaustible energy. Cruise even managed, on his Roman tour de force, to find time to stop in on Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who, rather lamely, said “Mission: Impossible” is what her government faces every day.

But back to the Spanish Steps, to the sweltering crowd of red carpet gawkers, to the rowdy screams and cauldron of sweat and excitement that rises above those huge LED screens and can be heard over the “Top Secret” drum corps in M:I 7 uniforms performing on the steps, lending the air of a military tattoo to the event.

After descending the staircase, Cruise strolls around the red carpet semicircle running around the famed Barcaccia fountain: 36 slots representing the whole world united here for the world premiere of one of the last great blockbuster franchises still standing.

The M:I 7 red carpet, much like the Roman Coliseum, has a strict pecking order. High up, next to the Trinità dei Monti church, there’s a dedicated area for the select few: Those granted extensive face-time with Cruise, who signs every single autograph, shakes every hand, poses for every selfie. Below is an almost-uncontrolled rabble of second-tier fans, shoving and scuffling for their moment with the star.

Addressing his fans directly, Cruise recalls the struggles the team had in making M:I 7, which shot at the peak of COVID lockdowns. “You have to see the film, we ran through these streets at a difficult time for everyone [the pandemic and lockdown]. I feel lucky to be here, and if there hadn’t been a team of people who made it possible, we wouldn’t have been able to create a story like this. The film is an epic adventure, full of real action, we really ‘rocked’ in that car.”

He points to the yellow Fiat 500 featured in one of the film’s most exciting and exquisitely Roman scenes, parked a few meters away. A car is described as “a challenge” even for someone like Cruise, accustomed to doing his own stunts on jets, helicopters, motorcycles and race cars. “Driving on the cobblestones of Rome, that was something! Hayley [Atwell] was very brave to be in that car with me, I kept reassuring her ‘Don’t worry, I’ll take care of you,’ but it wasn’t easy.”

Adds director Christopher McQuarrie , “It’s great to be back here in Rome. It fills me with joy to have been here when it was empty during the pandemic and to see the streets today so full of people and life. I’ve never felt more happy to be stuck in traffic!”

Rome and Venice starring in Mission Impossible 7: all Mission Impossible locations

Rome and Venice are important locations in Mission Impossible 7. In this film we’ll see Tom Cruise also appear in Norway, Abu Dhabi and England.

In this article we will show you all the Mission Impossible locations, starting of course in depth with the Italian Mission Impossible locations.

These are the Mission Impossible locations:

  • Norway
  • United Kingdom

Apart from Venice, these are all Mission Impossible locations that Ethan Hunt has already visited in the past.

Mission Impossible 7 in a nutshell

Mission Impossible 7 ( M:I VII ) is a action film starring Tom Cruise, who reprises his role as Ethan Hunt. The movie is written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. It will be the seventh installment of the ‘Mission Impossible’ film series.

Except of Tom Cruise, the cast includes Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, Vanessa Kirby and Rebecca Ferguson, who return to play their roles from previous Mission Impossible films.

Preparation for the first outdoor location, Venice, started on February 18, 2020 ( Instagramfoto by director McQuarrie), but was stopped a week later due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The new start of filming took place in September 2020 ( McQuarrie in Norway ). The last outdoor scenes were shot in August 2021.

Mission Impossible 7 is branded as ‘Dead Reckoning’ and is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 14, 2023 , followed by a streaming release.

Rome was an incredible backdrop for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. I can't wait for everyone to see this next month on the big screen. pic.twitter.com/8wn7xR35tH — Tom Cruise (@TomCruise) June 22, 2023

Rome is one of the main Mission Impossible locations of the seventh installment. The shooting in Rome has last with interruptions seven weeks. The mayor of Rome (who was seeking re-election beginning October 2021) finally had good news for her citizens: of the approximately 35 million euro production costs in Italy, over 18 million was spent in Rome.

The film crew filmed mainly in the Monti neighbourhood. That’s the area between the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain, to put it briefly. I live there. So I was able to witness the filming myself on several occasions.

Day one (Oct 6, 2020) started at the top of Via Panisperna, near my child’s primary school:

Just now: Tom Cruise in Rome, in (my) Monti neighborhood, starting to shoot #MissionImpossible7 . #TomCruise pic.twitter.com/8RpQaM7jRB — Ewout Kieckens (@ewoutkieckens) October 6, 2020

Some impressive chase scenes were shot there, including on the Via Panisperna. Here we see Ethan turning the corner of Via Milano:

And more #MissionImpossible7 : car chase at the corner of Via Milano and Via Panisperna, in #Rome . #TomCruise pic.twitter.com/IwXvvLfWNQ — Ewout Kieckens (@ewoutkieckens) October 6, 2020

James Bond was also chased in Monti

The filming in Monti, the Roman neighbourhood, reminds me of the filming for another action hero movie. In 2014, Daniel Craig aka James Bond was chased at exactly the same corner: Via Panisperna-Via Milano. Daniel Craig ultimately escapes a ruthless killer. It is all there to see in Spectre, the last James Bond film.

B . Spanish Steps

Days later, Cruise got rather rowdy around Bernini’s fountain at the base of the Spanish Steps. People of the Keats-Shelley House (dedicated to the English poets John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley) had a front-row seat in their museum. You can also see very well that whilst Cruise was at the steering wheel, he had not his hands on the wheel…

We love to see Tom Cruise racing through Piazza Di Spagna for #MissionImpossible7 pic.twitter.com/Ws3nt7tv63 — Keats-Shelley House (@Keats_Shelley) November 22, 2020

C. Roman Forum

The Viale dei Fori Imperiali (The Road of the Imperial Forums) is the only street in Rome that goes right through ancient Rome. On one side you have four fora (squares with a temple compound, or what is left of it), on the other side the Roman Forum. Especially the Forum dating from the Republican period is world-famous, because, among other things, the Senate building stands there.

In one of the scenes at one of the most beautiful Mission Impossible locations, two people are killed. It happens right in front of the statue of Augustus, Rome’s first emperor:

Mission Impossible on via dei Fori Imperiali #Rome #MissionImpossible #MI7 pic.twitter.com/iYurC0MY5u — Erica Firpo (@Moscerina) October 13, 2020

D. Piazza Venezia

The car chase also took place in Piazza Venezia, which translates as the Venice Square. The location is actually an extension of the Viale dei Fori Imperiali and also borders the Monti district. So the three locations (A, C and D) are linked with each other and make part of one and the same scene.

Auto da corsa e sgommate: piazza Venezia diventa ‘Mission Impossible’ con Tom Cruise https://t.co/OOxsNsfhAj — Repubblica (@repubblica) November 29, 2020

Another chase have been shot in the area behind Piazza Venezia, that is known as the ghetto (former jewish quarter). This time Cuise and Hayley Atwell are escaping on foot. The couple, coming from Via Cavalletti, holds each other hands or -better said- were handcuffed together:

Tom Cruise and Mission: Impossible 7 co-star Hayley Atwell are handcuffed together to shoot tense scene in Rome https://t.co/irl66Vm9mz — Daily Mail Celebrity (@DailyMailCeleb) November 24, 2020

Behind them is a menacing black SUV driven by the actress Pom Klementieff, who in the script is one of the bad ‘guys’. But the two manage to get away because the SUV is blocked as the street is too narrow for such a large car.

Other Mission Impossible locations in the ghetto are Via dei Funari, Via Caetani, Via del Delfino, Via della Tribuna di Campitelli and the Via Cavalletti.

Also read: In April 2021, also Lady Gaga appeared in the Rome ghetto. She shot a scene for the film ‘House of Gucci’ there. Learn which Rome locations Lady Gaga used for that film

Hunt and Cruise were back in Rome

It was not Ethan Hunt’s first visit to Rome. In Mission Impossible 3 (2006), the IMF agent visited the Vatican, rode a speedboat down the Tiber River and dressed up as a DHL delivery man who has a breakdown with his van. In the next scene, we see Cruise arguing with Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Both actors speak Italian quite well. What also stands out is the cliched way in which Italian life is portrayed (lots of hand gestures, lively discussions, chaos):

In the same year (2006) Tom Cruise was in Rome again to marry Katie Holmes (on Lake Bracciano, near Rome).

Mission Impossible 7 brought some relief to corona-stricken Venice in 2020. The Municipality received half a mllion euros alone for 3 days of shooting in the Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale) and space in the Arsenal as the production’s HQ.

In any case, the film production incurred high additional costs because the pandemic stopped the film making for a long time. The film crew interrupted filming in Venice (the first location) when the Covid-19 pandemic erupted in Europe, hitting particularly hard in Italy. The production did well to break down on time, on February 24, because on March 9, Italy was the first country in the world to impose a lockdown that applied to the entire country.

But just at the beginning and shortly before breaking up, CBS had some nice footage. Here we see a camera drone above Palazzo Contarini De Bovolo. This palace is famous for its outside spiral staircase:

Venice + no tourists = Hollywood set. A. Palazzo Ducale

Palazzo Ducale is the splendid Venetian masterpiece of Gothic art that once was the residence of the Doges, Venetian rulers, and the seat of the Parliament of Venice, a City Republic.

The Ducal Palace is a unique setting that would allow Ethan Hunt to make his escape through the halls of the Senate, the ancient weapons depot, the underground passages, the Bridge of Sighs and the (in)famous prisons from which Giacomo Casanova also escaped. We have to wait for the release of the film to check which part of the palace has been used.

B. Rio di San Zan Degola

This canal (Rio) is quite long and leads to the Canale Grande, Venice’s largest canal. The shots were taken just behind the church of San Giacomo dell’Orio.

Here we see Cruise in his preparation to step over some boats to get to the other side. Apparently Ethan is in big trouble… as there are no shortage of bridges in Venice. A nice detail now that we are in the most romantic city in the world: one of the boats is called ‘Amore’ (‘Love’):

C. Ponte Conzafelzi

As mentioned, Venice has a multitude of bridges, more than 400, and one of them is the Ponte Conzafelzi. On this bridge, we see Hayley Atwell sitting on the ground as Cruise slowly approaches:

This bridge, also called the crooked ( storto ) or Pinneli, is rather special because it is made of cast iron. It is a hundred metres from one of the craziest bookshops in the world: the Libreria Acqua Alta or High Water Bookshop.

D. Other Venetian calli, rii and campi

Apart from the above locations, numerous other rio’s (canals), alleys or calli as they are called in local dialect and campo’s (squares) have been used. Below you can see Ethan running for his life while a cyclist rides ahead to give him some proper light:

According to Paramount , the producing company, McQuarrie should also have filmed at Campo Santa Maria del Giglio, Calle del Traghetto, Campo della Salute, Campo Santo Stefano, Campo Pisani, Ramo e Sotoportego Pisani, Calle Ca’ Genova and Campo San Vio.

Cruise’s ‘pad’ in Venice

Tom Cruise and other crew members stayed at Hotel Gritti Palace during the shooting in Venice (February and autumn 2020). This is one of those typical super de luxe hotels on the Canale Grande. It was built as a family palace in the 15th century and now belongs to the orbit of Marriott. It’s an 8 minute walk from St Mark’s Square.

A thank-you at the end

As usual at the end of a shooting on location, the film production thanked those involved, a very nice gesture.

Venice has blessed us with her history and haunting beauty, leaving a unique and indelible imprint on our film that mere words cannot express.

3. Abu Dhabi

The United Arab Emirates are not unknown territory for Ethan. He stayed there in 2010 as well. There, actually in Dubai, he climbed the highest skyscraper in the world (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol). The scene where Cruise climbs the tower from the outside during an approaching sandstorm is one of the most famous Mission Impossible locations.

Scenes for Fallout (2018) were also shot in the same emirates union, specifically in the Liwa Desert (Empty Quarter), one of the largest sandy deserts in the world.

Three times is the charm. Below, we see McQuarrie and the lead actors on camels, marking the start to filming in the country:

Dit bericht bekijken op Instagram Een bericht gedeeld door Christopher McQuarrie (@christophermcquarrie)

At the first shooting day in Norway director McQuarrie showed what a fantastic setup his team had made:

Over the same bridge/ramp, Tom Cruise later drives into the ravine (he parachutes to the ground), as seen on Norwegian television:

Locations were chosen in the province of Møre og Romsdal (Western Norway).

A. Helsetkopen

In this mountainous area Tom Cruise, as usual, performed his own stunt (see above). That stunt was quite impressive: driving over a narrow ramp built on a mountain plateau, a free fall down and the (late) opening of his parachute. Cruise performed the stunt eight times for the best result, as he tells himself during the Graham Norton Show (BBC):

Helsetkopen is located north of Europe’s largest glacier area, called Jostedalsbreen. By the way, the Norwegian press is speculating that a Mission Impossible location for the eights installment will be set not far from here, in a place called Aurland.

Mission Impossible locations

B. Åndalsnes

Åndalsnes is not for nothing called the paradise for climbers. The film crew concentrated on the famous mountain wall Trollveggen. That is the highest vertical rock formation in Europe (1,100 meters high). Tom Cruise is well known with high rock formations and how not to fall off them. In Fallout (2018), he famously battled Henry Cavill on Preikestolen, a cliff formation. Preikestolen is also in Norway (even though the location goes on for Kashmir):

5. United Kingdom

We won’t go into too much detail about the UK Mission Impossible locations, but let’s show you at last a spectaculair FB photo of a local villager near the Darlton quarry:

Tom Cruise to film movie in Rome

Tom cruise in rome: 40 days of open-air film sets and car chases in the city centre..

Hollywood film star Tom Cruise and his film crew are to take over some of central Rome's most prized locations for the filming of a major new movie this spring.

The film, with the provisional title of Lybra , will be filmed over a period of 40 days, starting around mid-March.

The action is due to take place on open-air sets in Piazza Navona , Piazza Venezia, in the cobblestoned streets of the Monti quarter and perhaps also in Piazza di Spagna.

Special effects scenes and car chases are expected to be filmed around central Rome, with the city receiving a handsome fee of €200,000 a day for the use of public land.

Tom Cruise in Rome

This will be the third significant return to Rome for Cruise who filmed scenes for Mission Impossible 3 in the capital in 2005, returning a year later to marry actress Katie Holmes in a sumptuous wedding ceremony at the Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano.

When Cruise arrived in Rome to film the third installment of Mission Impossible he and his entourage stayed in the Hotel Hassler, above the Spanish Steps . Cruise made headlines in Rome at the time for filming the unforgettable speedboat chase on the Tiber, which he did - as usual - without stunt doubles.

There is mystery surrounding the "Lybra" film project, which coincides with the announcement of the cast of the seventh edition of Mission Impossible , which will star Rebecca Ferguson and Hayley Atwell alongside Cruise. The speculation is that Lybra is in fact Mission Impossible 7 .

The movie will be the latest in a string of international productions filmed in Rome in recent years, such as Zoolander 2 , To Rome with Love by Woody Allen and of course, the James Bond movie Spectre  with Daniel Craig in 2014.

Movies filmed in Rome during the previous decade include Angels and Demons with Tom Hanks, The Talented Mr Ripley with Matt Damon, Eat Pray Love with Julia Roberts, and Gangs of New York with Leonardo DiCaprio in 2000.

Tom Cruise Gets His First Criterion Collection Movie Set for 4K UHD Release

Not a single film with Tom Cruise has been in the lauded Criterion Collection, until now.

  • Tom Cruise's Risky Business joins the prestigious Criterion Collection, marking a pivotal moment in his career.
  • The film is praised for blending tender romance with a sharp critique of capitalism, even if it's goofy fun on the surface.
  • Criterion's release includes a 4K UHD restoration, special features, and interviews, making it a must-have for film and Cruise enthusiasts.

Tom Cruise has been one of the biggest Hollywood stars for four decades, and has starred in almost 50 movies, but until today, none of them have been represented in the most prestigious film collection in the world — the Criterion Collection . The home media distributor collects the greatest or most culturally important films of all time and immaculately restores them and curates magnificent special features. And now, Cruise's 1983 film Risky Business will be the 1,227th movie added to the collection.

The Criterion Collection announced its inclusion today, April 15, with the film being released in 4K UHD (and Blu-ray) on July 23. Their summary of the film, famous for its underwear lip-sync scene, reads as follows:

" A sly piece of pop subversion, this irresistible satire of Reagan-era materialism features Tom Cruise in his star-is-born breakthrough as a Chicago suburban prepster whose college-bound life spirals out of control when his parents go out of town for the week and an enterprising call girl (Rebecca De Mornay) invites him to walk on the wild side. While Cruise boogying in his briefs yielded one of the most iconic pop-cultural moments of the 1980s, it is the film’s unexpected mix of tender romance (enhanced by a moody synth score by Tangerine Dream) and sharp-witted capitalist critique that remains fresh and daring."

Risky Business

Risky business special features and other july releases for criterion.

It's an interesting choice for the Criterion Collection, with many other Cruise films being considered superior ( Collateral, Eyes Wide Shut, The Color of Money, Magnolia ). Of course, there are licensing issues to be considered, but there are certainly good reasons for the inclusion of Risky Business . It's the film that truly announced Cruise as a cinematic presence, while also playfully deconstructing the typical sex comedies that were so popular at the time ( Porky's, Revenge of the Nerds ). The special features are as follows.

  • New 4K digital restorations of the director’s cut and the original theatrical release, supervised and approved by director Paul Brickman and producer Jon Avnet, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks
  • One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features
  • Audio commentary for the original theatrical release featuring Brickman, Avnet, and actor Tom Cruise
  • New interviews with Avnet and casting director Nancy Klopper
  • New conversation between editor Richard Chew and film historian Bobbie O’Steen
  • The Dream Is Always the Same: The Story of “Risky Business,” a program featuring interviews with Brickman, Avnet, cast members, and others
  • Screen tests with Cruise and actor Rebecca De Mornay
  • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing

Why Tom Cruise Won't Return as Jack Reacher

Risky Business joins several other films for Criterion's July releases. There's a 4K UHD restoration of the all-time classic, Le Samouraï , perhaps the coolest film ever made. Farewell, My Concubine is getting a release after its beautiful restoration in 2023. Black God, White Devil will get a release, finally bringing the brilliant Brazilian Western to the masses. Wim Wenders' astonishing 2023 film Perfect Days will get a home media release from Criterion, as well. Perhaps the best inclusion of them all, however, is Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid , Sam Peckinpah's underrated, melancholic Western masterpiece with a score from Bob Dylan. Rebecca ferguson's mission: impossible exit comments expose a bigger problem with dead reckoning.

Rebecca Ferguson's comments about Ilsa's role in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning highlights a major flaw with the film that the sequel could fix.

  • Dead Reckoning introduced new characters at the expense of fan-favorites like Ilsa, leading to a pacing problem and lack of character development.
  • The film had great stunts and fight scenes but felt rudderless in character work due to the sheer scale and focus on new faces over established ones.
  • The next installment, Dead Reckoning 2, has the potential to correct this by focusing on a singular mission and giving depth to Ethan Hunt's supporting cast.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning has a pacing problem that impacted some of the franchise's most enduring characters — and Rebecca Ferguson explained a major source of the problem. For three films, Ferguson's Ilsa was one of the more compelling side characters in the Mission: Impossible franchise. While the series remained largely focused on Ethan Hunt, the series had steadily developed a strong stable of supporting Mission: Impossible characters .

However, the perpetually growing scale of the films left established characters off to the side while Dead Reckoning introduced new faces and massive challenges. The result was one of the film's underlying flaws. Even while it remained entertaining throughout thanks to great stunts, fight scenes , and solid comedic beats, Dead Reckoning felt relatively rudderless in its character work . With Dead Reckoning 2 on the horizon, there's some hope that the film could course-correct by embracing a very direct plotline that could push Ethan Hunt's supporting cast back into the spotlight.

14 Mission Impossible 7 Easter Eggs & Franchise References

Rebecca ferguson highlights mission: impossible - dead reckoning's character problem, how filming a massive action movie could turn out to be boring.

Rebecca Ferguson's comments about the death of Ilsa in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 highlights an underlying problem with the latest entry in the blockbuster action franchise. As Ferguson explained during an episode of WrapWomen's UnWrapped Podcast, the sheer scale of the Mission: Impossible films makes it a uniquely massive undertaking, especially for actors. While Ferguson enjoyed playing Ilsa , the actor recounted how she'd spend days waiting in her trailer for the filming to feature her. Ferguson also noted that her time on screen became limited due to the introduction of new characters , who needed additional room to be established.

This speaks to an underlying problem with Mission: Impossible , which tends to lose the focused characterization of previous films when introducing new faces. That can be felt in Dead Reckoning , which did a good job of establishing Hayley Atwell as Grace and Pom Klementieff as Paris, but didn't have room for Simon Pegg's Benji, Ving Rhames' Luther, or Vanessa Kirby's Alanna outside their already cemented traits. The sheer reality of the situation is that something needs to be cut to keep the film moving at a good pace, and in Dead Reckoning that was character beats for people like Ilsa.

Did Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Really Sideline Its Existing Characters?

How ethan hunt's allies became afterthoughts.

Most of the best sequences in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One relied on Tom Cruise finding a rueful balance of excitement and comedy alongside Grace. Coupled with a cool characterization of Paris as a genuinely dangerous threat to the veteran super spy, the film had fun with its new characters. However, this left characters like Ilsa in the cold. She got a handful of scenes but little direct characterization, with her final fight scene ending in her inglorious death. While Ferguson may love the character, she's got a point that Ilsa didn't have much to do in Dead Reckoning .

Benji and Luther were also reduced in importance, getting to provide brief moments of support and comic relief without the deeper characterizations present in previous films . To keep the movie moving and introduce new faces, Dead Reckoning had to simplify much of its central cast and their roles in the film. The movie quickly moves past Ilsa's death so that the film can have more action set-pieces. To accommodate new faces and bigger spectacles, Dead Reckoning ultimately pushed some of the franchise's most enduring characters to the sidelines.

Mission: Impossible 7’s Scrapped Flashback Scene Would Have Marked A Career First For Tom Cruise

How dead reckoning part 2 can do justice to mission: impossible's characters, a focused mission means more room for specific characterization.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 2 might have a better chance to maintain a singular focus. After Dead Reckoning Part 1 's ending set up the dangerous potential of the Entity, the ending of Dead Reckoning Part 1 teased the next film would be about reaching it and destroying it. It's a straightforward idea and will hopefully allow Dead Reckoning 2 to focus on that single mission. That could help prevent the film from feeling as loose as the prior film. If the film remains focused on the mission to reach the Entity, characters like Benji and Luther likely won't be pushed to the sidelines .

The film could utilize those characters as they were intended, providing direct and specific support for an otherwise impossible mission . It's a shame that Ilsa couldn't survive long enough to get that kind of extended focus, as a film dedicated to a singular mission (instead of sending Hunt across the world on the hunt for a small flash drive that took several turns) could have been a great showcase for the character. Hopefully, the next film in the series will learn from Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 and keep the focus tighter on the established characters in the process.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning is an action-adventure spy thriller from director Christopher McQuarrie. It's the seventh entry in the Mission: Impossible series and a direct sequel to Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The title will star Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ving Rhames.

Zack Snyder Wanted Tom Cruise To Star In Watchmen – But They Couldn't Agree On A Character

Lions for Lambs Tom Cruise

Zack Snyder's "Watchmen," as it turns out, could have featured one of the biggest movie stars of all time — Tom Cruise. The actor behind "Mission: Impossible" and "Top Gun," among many, many other hits, was said to be in the running for a role in the film dating back to several years before it even came out, which Snyder later personally confirmed. But now, the filmmaker has added a pretty interesting layer to the whole thing: Cruise would have starred in the movie, but he wanted to take on the role of Rorschach, which isn't exactly what Snyder had in mind.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast  as part of the promotional tour for his new movie  "Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver" (which hits Netflix this weekend),  Snyder touched on Cruise's potential casting in "Watchmen" all those years ago. The director explained that he had wanted Cruise to play Ozymandias. Cruise, however, had his eyes on a different role. Here's what Snyder had to say about it:

"I wanted Tom Cruise for Ozymandias. Tom wanted to play Rorschach. He wanted to play Rorschach, which I mean, obviously he could have done. But yeah, we had Jackie [Earle Haley] already, and Jackie is like, unbelievable. But I certainly would have considered Tom, in retrospect if I hadn't had Jackie."

Indeed, Jackie Earle Haley, who was by no means a big name at that point in his career (with all due respect), ended up playing the pivotal role of Rorschach in the film. While Haley was undoubtedly a lot cheaper, Warner Bros. probably would have loved to get Cruise in "Watchmen" to help boost the film's profile. On the other hand, the studio would've certainly been far from psyched about him being under a mask for the majority of the runtime.

Watchmen would have been very different with Tom Cruise

It's a fascinating bit of alternate history to consider. In the end, Matthew Goode played the role of Ozymandias. Again, Goode was not yet a big name and this was one of his first significant roles in a major tentpole. Cruise would have been by far the biggest movie star in the cast. It's easy to see why Snyder, at that time, envisioned him as the all-powerful, super-confident Ozymandias. But it's also not difficult to see why Cruise would see Rorschach as the meatier role.

"He was interested," Snyder explained to CHUD in 2007 when asked about Cruise's near-involvement. "I did talk to him about it for a while." The director also confirmed at the time that yes, it would have been for Ozymandias. This Rorschach news is fascinating though. Would Cruise, Snyder, and Warner Bros. have worked things out if they hadn't already found Haley? Would "Watchmen" have been a theatrical hit rather than a bomb with that kind of star power? There is so much to consider.

This also isn't the only time that Cruise flirted with a major superhero movie role in the late 2000s. The Oscar nominee was also famously courted for the lead in 2008's "Iron Man," which he passed on. Robert Downey Jr. ended up with the part and the rest is box office history. To this day, Cruise still hasn't appeared in a superhero movie. That being the case, it's pretty fascinating that he circled two very big ones right around the same time and, beyond that, never ended up taking part in what became the biggest genre in Hollywood for a decade and a half.

"Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver" is now streaming on Netflix.

Tom Cruise's Worst Movie Ever, According To Rotten Tomatoes

1986's "Top Gun" decidedly propelled Tom Cruise toward stardom, while the actor had already made his mark with "Risky Business" and "The Color of Money," two films that helped underline his dynamic range as a performer before his rise to fame. From this point on, Cruise would go on to star in a string of projects that cemented his superstar status, but like any performer, a few films failed to impress audiences and critics for many reasons. No, I am not talking about the disastrous "The Mummy" — the first and final entry in the doomed Dark Universe — but the lowest-rated Tom Cruise film, at least according to Rotten Tomatoes. I'm talking about Roger Donaldson's 1988 film about making drinks and money: "Cocktail," which currently sports an abysmal 9% on Rotten Tomatoes.

There is good reason for this overwhelmingly negative consensus, as "Cocktail" feels like an unsavory product of its time, what with its tendency to lean into sexism for laughs, or an overt reliance on hyperconsumerism. Iffy themes and treatment of certain subject matter aside, the film's narrative feels hollow, where no amount of charm is enough to fill this gaping void. It is an unrealistic fantasy that fails to entertain even with the suspension of disbelief, and Cruise's natural charisma feels squandered on something so empty. However, despite the film's often irritating lack of self-awareness, "Cocktail" deserves a viewing due to its hyperspecific appeal to a time devoid of responsibilities, with Cruise playing an exceedingly suave bartender who feels progressively irredeemable, but suddenly gains a saint's conscience by the end. Here's what you can expect from "Cocktail."

Cocktail Fails To Highlight Cruise's Strengths As A Performer

After serving in the army, Brian Flanagan (Cruise) arrives in New York City with ambitious dreams, eager to make quick money after bagging a cushy job. However, dreams often shatter, and he has to make do with bartending by night while attending business school by day, with experienced bartender Doug Coughlin (Bryan Brown) teaching him how to flair and impress patrons. After experiencing the high of impressing women and being semi-popular due to his skills, Brian begins to dream bigger, dropping out of business school to eventually open a chain of bars — an impractical decision in favor of pursuing something with a mentor who constantly eggs him to throw caution to the wind while being emotionally insensitive to those around him.

An inevitable falling out occurs between the men, and Brian decides to go to Jamaica to make his dreams come true, where he meets Jordan (Elizabeth Shue), whom he treats rather horribly, but his actions are painted as flawed as opposed to being deliberate transgressions. This is where "Cocktail" feels the most grating, as Brian is intended as a protagonist worth rooting for, but only comes off as an obtuse jerk, incapable of treating women like human beings or introspecting about his innermost desires. This aspect would have worked if the narrative rooted Brian as an antagonistic figure who indulged in morally soulless escapades for the sake of making money — something which Cruise could have embodied perfectly, like that of his shrewd, unhinged character in "Collateral."

The narrative intent of "Cocktail" only feels more questionable with time, along with its mixed messaging that both condones and chastises moral bankruptcy, peppered with a dozen misogynistic jokes and attitudes clogging up an already barebones holiday adventure.
