Indian citizens are again allowed to enter Thailand under the Visa on Arrival scheme. There is a restriction in place that Indian citizens can visit Thailand under this program for a maximum stay of 30 days.

From January 2023, Citizens from India will be able to enter Thailand with any proof of vaccination status. However, for travelers returning to India, you are required to have a COVID test in Thailand before your flight to India.

Purchase your Travel Insurance

For travelers from and into India, it is mandatory  to purchase a Travel Insurance policy before traveling to Thailand.  The insurance must be valid for the duration of your stay in Thailand plus 7 days.

  • Medical emergencies
  • Personal injury & accidents
  • Missed or delayed flights
  • Damage to belongings

The most important thing to know about insurance is that foreign travelers are not eligible for any form of free medical care in Thailand. Arriving in Thailand – Best Practices

So what can you expect when landing in Thailand? Here are a few things that will help you enjoy your trip and show respect to local Thai people.

Wearing Masks

Wearing of masks is no longer compulsory but still recommended when in public places. You see that many Thai people (and visitors) still wear masks when out and about. It is recommended to wear a mask when visiting restaurants or public venues. You will not get in trouble if you don’t wear a mask, but it is a case of “do as the locals do”. It is about respect and consideration.

TM6 Arrival Cards

The Thai government has temporarily removed the need for visitors to complete the blue arrival card known as TM6. Their aim is to ease congestion at airports and remove another form that holiday makers need to complete. This initiative is in a testing phase, but it is hoped that the removal of TM6 will be successful and the change will become permanent.

Paperwork to Prepare

Though Thailand Pass is removed, and travelers do not need to provide proof before entry, it is best to prepare a few documents before arriving.

  • Certificate of Travel Insurance
  • Visa on Arrival Form
  • 1 passport size photo
  • 2,000 THB visa on arrival fee
  • flight booking and hotel reservation

This will speed up your processing time before leaving your country, or if asked to provide vaccination or testing proof in a random check. These documents can be presented in digital form, but airlines, Immigration, and Health Officers will appreciate the extra effort if you print them.

Following the above advice will ensure you have a smooth trip to Thailand and can enjoy a few weeks of well-deserved vacation in the tropics.

If you plan to enter Thailand through the Visa Exemption Scheme, then you will need to provide 10,000 THB (~$280) per person or 20,000 THB (~$560) per family.

Can I ride Scooty with my Indian Driving license in Thailand ?

Hi Tanveer,

You must have a license if you want to hire a motorbike or car. (International drivers permit)

' srcset=

I am travelling to Bangkok, in Sep last week, from India and planning a road trip down to Phuket. Would I need ‘international driving permit’ in addition to valid Indian driving license ?

You can, if you have a valid driver’s license in English from your country of origin or a valid International driver’s license.

I read the guide but there’s no mention of requirement of ‘internal driving permit’ or English language driving license.

My driving license is in English, would I be permitted to drive 2 wheeler and 4 wheeler in Bangkok and Phuket ?

What is Malaysia Tourist Visa?

How to apply for malaysia tourist visa, eligibility for malaysia tourist visa, documents required for malaysia tourist visa, photo specification of malaysia tourist visa, processing time for malaysia tourist visa, malaysia tourist visa fees, after submission, how to check visa status, when you have this visa, malaysia tourist visa for indians - definitive guide.

Most of us know Malaysia as the home to what was once the “world’s tallest building” - The Petronas Twin Towers. However, apart from the sophisticated urban cities including the grand Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia has a lot to offer. It is one of the major reasons why people get a Malaysia tourist visa and rush to the country.

The Malaysian tourist permit is an endorsement that lets individuals enter the country for taking part in tourism-related activities. A lot of nationalities have visa-free entry to Malaysia. However, since India is not among them, a Malaysia tourist visa for Indians is a mandatory requirement. The visa can be issued on arrival in certain cases, it can be issued as an e-visa, as an eNTRI (Electronic Travel Registration and Information), or even as a normal sticker visa.

Note:-

  • eNTRI is only applicable in case you are travelling to Malaysia via direct flight from India, or via transit through Singapore, Brunei or Thailand.
  • Tourist visa on arrival is only if you are an Indian national travelling from Indonesia, Singapore or Thailand and you must hold valid visas for those countries.

Malaysia tourist visa

There are multiple ways in which you can apply for the Malaysia tourist visa for Indian citizens . However, before starting the application, you must ensure that you are eligible to apply for the tourist category, You can then proceed to make the application as follows -

On arrival

  • Travel to Malaysia from Thailand, Singapore or Brunei.
  • Fill in the application form at the airport and pay the fees.
  • Submit it to the immigration officer.

E visa & eNTRI

  • Visit the website of the e visa portal for Malaysia.
  • Click on “I’m new, apply” and fill in the online application form.
  • Upload scanned copies of the required documents.
  • Pay the fees and submit the application.

Sticker Visa

  • Visit the website of the Malaysian Visa Application Centre (VAC).
  • Download the application form and fill in all the details.
  • Proceed to book an appointment at the VAC for the application submission.
  • Visit the appointment centre with the application form, documents, and the fees.
  • Submit your application at the VAC.

In order to be able to apply for the Malaysia tourist visa from India , you must meet the following eligibility conditions -

  • You must be living in India while lodging the application. If you are living on a residence permit in another nation, you will have to apply to the respective authority there.
  • You must hold a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of your entry in the country.
  • Your sole purpose of the visit must be to take part in tourism alone.
  • You must possess sufficient funds to support your stay (this may vary depending on the mode of application).
  • If you are travelling using the eNTRI or e-visa via land, you must pass through the allocated border gates only.

As per the Malaysia tourist visa requirements from India , you must possess the following documents -

  • Fully filled and signed application form.
  • 2 photos as per the specifications.
  • Proof of funds such as bank statements.
  • Proof of accommodation such as hotel bookings, invitation letter, etc.
  • If you are applying at a VAC outside your jurisdiction, you must also provide Aadhar card, rent agreements, Marriage certificates, etc.
  • Confirmed flight tickets.
  • 35mm X 50mm
  • Colour: Coloured
  • Head must occupy the central position
  • Must be captured within the last 3 months
  • Background: Solid, plain white or grey
  • 80% face coverage
  • Neutral expression
  • Glasses: Thin framed and prescription glasses only
  • Headgears - only for religious reasons
  • Facial hair - permitted

The time for processing depends on the mode of application, the volume of applications at the embassy, your previous travel history, and so on. The e-visas are issued fast within about just 2 working days. However, the sticker permit can take up to 7 days as well. As a result, ensure that you apply well in advance.

The fees for the permit depends on the mode of application and the foreign exchange rates. It includes other service charges levied by the VAC, as well any delivery charges if you choose that option. You must check the exact amount before starting the application.

Upon submitting your application at the respective VAC, it is then forwarded to the High Commission of Malaysia in New Delhi or to the Consulate General of Malaysia in Mumbai or Chennai as per the jurisdiction. The respective mission will then process your application. Note that the VAC has no influence over the decision making of the visa. They are simply in charge of the administrative part.

Once your application has been successful, you can collect your passport from the VAC, or have them deliver it to you for an additional charge.

If you have applied for the e-visa or the eNTRI, you will receive an email with your entry permit. You will then have to take a print out and keep it with you while travelling.

You can check the status of your e-visa or eNTRI by clicking here and entering your passport number. If you have applied at the VAC, you can enter your passport number and date of birth here and check the status. Alternately, you can simply contact the travel agency you have applied through.

On successfully obtaining your tourist visa, you must keep in mind the following few points to ensure that you have a hassle-free journey -

  Before you travel -

  • Note the validity and number of entries mentioned on your visa. You must not stay in the country beyond this period. You must also follow the entry type given.
  • Carry all your travel documents before you travel to the country.

At the border

  • You must show your passport with the visa to the immigration officer. Your entry stamp will be stamped on the passport.
  • You may be asked to show the copy of the other documents submitted as part of your application.
  • You may be asked about the basic details of your visit. Ensure that you answer honestly and without any hesitance.
  • For visa on arrival, you will have to pay the fees at the airport.

When you enter Malaysia

  • While you are on a tourist permit, you cannot take part in any work or business activities.
  • You cannot extend this visa.
  • Carry a copy of your passport and visa while you are travelling within the country.
  • You must respect the culture and customs of the country, as well as abide by the immigration laws during your stay.
  • Follow the laws in the country. Drug trafficking in Malaysia is a death penalty offence.

How to Plan a Trip to Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore 2024

If you aim to immerse yourself in exotic Asian cultures to the fullest during a single trip, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore are a great combo. They perfectly blend tropical beach fun, rich cultures, and diverse foodie experiences. Bordering with each other, transportation is quite convenient as well.

However, planning a multi-country trip is not easy. Dealing with the travel logistics could even be overwhelming. So, here we have prepared an experience-backed guide for you.

How Many Days to Spend in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore

For a comfortable tour pace, you're advised to spend at least 2 weeks on a trip to Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Thailand, the top destination in Southeast Asia, is worth spending more time in, typically 9 days to 2 weeks. To enjoy the best of Thailand, don't miss Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and a tropical island. For an in-depth exploration, you could also venture off the beaten track to Kanchanaburi and Chiang Rai.

Malaysia is famous as a melting pot of diverse cultural and historical sites, so 3–10 days are enough. First-timers usually focus on Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding cities, such as the Cameron Highlands, Malacca, and Penang. Consider visiting Taman Negara and Borneo if you're into adventures.

You're advised to spend 2–3 days in Singapore as it is small and known for its modern vibe as well as being an air hub.

Itinerary Suggestions for Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore

We have carefully designed two handpicked itineraries to show what is possible, which are detailed below: a 2-week one to discover the best of Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore and a 3-week one for deeper insights. If you have a different schedule or interests, feel free to contact us for a personalized itinerary.

1. A Classic 2-Week Itinerary for Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore

If you're first-timers with a limited time of 2 weeks, you're advised to focus on the iconic highlights for a general insight into these three countries. Check out the following thoughtfully-planned itinerary.

  • 8 days in Thailand: Bangkok (2–3 days), Chiang Mai (2–3 days), and one island (4–5 days)

Discover Bangkok's city highlights with a foodie tour and long-tail boat ride, participate in elephant sanctuary life and take a walking tour in Chiang Mai, and relax on the picturesque island of Phuket or Koh Samui.

  • 3 days in Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur (2–3 days) and Malacca (1 day)

Have a glimpse of Malaysia's modern life, sail through the Selangor River's mangroves, spotting fireflies in the forest, and witness the rare blue tears phenomenon in Kuala Lumpur, and then discover the rich heritage and European colonial buildings in Malacca.

  • 3 days in Singapore

Explore the futuristic skylines along Marina Bay, experience the hawker culture on an interesting foodie tour, and dive into the colorful Asian culture in local communities. Going on a night safari would add an exciting touch to your trip.

2. A Comprehensive 3-Week Journey through Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore

Beyond the highlights of the 2-week itinerary, this itinerary offers more outdoor adventures in Thailand and Malaysia. If you're active travelers, look no further than this for some of the top things to do.

Venture into the mysterious Golden Triangle and hill tribe villages in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Have a more thorough exploration of Malaysia: trek around a hill station in the Cameron Highlands, seek thrills in Taman Negara (such as its Canopy Walk), and take a foodie walking tour and cycle around George Town in historical Penang.

The following is a recommended outline itinerary:

  • 11 days in Thailand: Bangkok (2–3 days), Chiang Mai (2–3 days), Chiang Rai (2 days), and one island (4–5 days)
  • 8 days in Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur (2–3 days), Taman Negara (2 days), the Cameron Highlands (2 days), and Penang (2–3 days)
  • 2 days in Singapore

How Much Is a Trip to Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore?

For an exclusive and stress-free family or couple trip to Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, a customized private tour is the way to go.

A private tour to Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore usually costs about US$200–250 per person per day, including 4-5 star hotels, meals, transportation, and private touring. For a 2-week private trip with two adults and two kids, budget for about US$9,500–12,000, while a couple could expect to spend about US$5,600–7,000.

Travel with us and you would have the services of our highly-praised guides and drivers , enjoy our exclusive activities, such as a Loy Krathong tour in Thailand in November, and stay at well-selected boutique hotels at the best agent rates. To further reduce the cost per person, consider inviting more family and friends to join the journey.

Best Times to Visit Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore

For a trip to Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, November to April is the best season for Thailand, when your trip would not be affected by the minimal rainfall.

During this period, you are likely to encounter rainy days in Singapore and Malaysia (KL) as they have moderate to very high rainfall during this period. Singapore's rich indoor activities make it less affected by rainfall, which mainly comes as afternoon or evening downpours.

If you're planning a summer trip, travel is still possible in Thailand's wetter months. You could enjoy better weather prospects in Singapore and the eastern coast of Malaysia then, and you could take advantage of low costs and fewer crowds in Thailand.

Check out more on our Best Times to Visit Southeast Asia

Which Country to Enter First?

For better travel logistics, you're advised to travel in the sequence of Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore or vice versa .

Given Malaysia's central geographic location between Thailand and Singapore, this tour sequence minimizes detours and time in transportation. Additionally, choosing this order provides more international flights from/to your home country, increasing the chances of securing better airfare deals. Therefore, flying to and from Thailand and Singapore proves to be more efficient and cost-effective.

Flights are the most chosen way for multiple-country travel in Southeast Asia. For your trip to Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, you could travel between the countries within 3 hours. It also helps to avoid the hassles of crossing the borders on land.

For a more relaxing tour pace, you could also consider international cruises. Without frequent transportation and hotel changes, you could have more quality time with your loved one against the scenic backdrop of the open sea.

When exploring a single country, private transfers ( which we provide as part of our travel packages ) are highly recommended for shorter journeys if you prefer more flexibility and comfort.

Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia tourism shine with visa-free access

Saturday, February 10, 2024

Singapore, thailand, malaysia, visa, spring festival,

Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia offer visa waivers to attract Chinese tourists during Spring Festival, aiming to boost post-pandemic tourism.

Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia are banking on their visa waivers to entice a wave of Chinese travelers gearing up for the Spring Festival holiday. Wei Meng, a 44-year-old Chinese engineer and aviation enthusiast, epitomizes the ideal visitor these countries are vying for.

Since Singapore waived visas for Chinese citizens, Wei promptly altered his plans, swapping Australia for a six-day sojourn in Singapore instead. While considering trips to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, both offering visa-free stays for Chinese nationals, he settled on Singapore due to the upcoming Singapore Airshow, slated to open its doors to the public on February 24.

As the Spring Festival heralds the first major holiday season since China lifted pandemic-related travel constraints last year, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia are banking on these unprecedented visa waivers to attract a significant chunk of outbound Chinese tourists, vital for their economies.

Chinese travelers often grumble about the cumbersome visa application process, as reflected by their passport’s ranking of 62nd on the Henley Passport Index, which rates passports based on the number of visa-free destinations.

Previously, Chinese tourists constituted a substantial revenue stream, contributing to over a quarter of Thailand’s holiday arrivals in 2019 and being the top spenders in Singapore, splurging more than S$4 billion ($3 billion) that same year.

Despite reduced travel post-pandemic, Chinese visitors remain a dominant force in Thailand, especially since the launch of its visa waiver program in September. Tourism officials anticipate a surge in Chinese arrivals during the Lunar New Year holiday, tripling the figures from 2023.

Similarly, Malaysia initiated visa-free entry for Chinese citizens in December, aiming to attract 5-7 million visitors from China this year, nearly doubling pre-pandemic levels.

To capitalize on the Lunar New Year festivities, hotels, including properties under The Ascott Limited group, are rolling out promotions such as discounts and special activities tailored to the occasion.

Benefiting from its status as a key air traffic hub in Asia, Singapore leads the pack in welcoming Chinese visitors with a nearly 5% increase in direct flights from mainland China compared to the same period in 2019.

In contrast, Malaysia and Thailand lag behind in direct flight numbers, with reductions of 33% and 17% respectively compared to 2019 levels, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Fill me in

Are you an Indian citizen searching for a new Singapore visa in Malaysia? You may need to apply for the Singapore Tourist Visa to enter. But that is not the only document you require to enter the country. You will also have to apply for the Singapore Arrival Card .

This document allows you to enter the country safely, and at iVisa, we offer this service for you. Continue reading below to learn more about this travel document.

Get your travel documents with iVisa

As mentioned above, apart from the visa that Indians need to travel to Singapore, you must apply for a Singapore Arrival Card , an electronic admission document, so that travelers entering for tourism can do so without difficulty.

Currently, we do not process visas by this means, but we process the Singapore Arrival Card . To learn more about it, continue reading the following information.

What is the SG Arrival Card, and how can I get it?

The Singapore Arrival Card is an electronic document that has replaced the traditional paper landing/embarkation card. This is a mandatory entry requirement for all domestic or international travelers arriving in the country.

This document also functions as a travel health certificate to track and stop the spread of COVID-19 in the country. The Singapore Ministry of Health can also use the document to trace travelers who need some form of care and treatment for COVID-19.

The process to obtain this document is extremely easy and accessible. But please note that the SG Arrival Card is neither an electronic tourist visa nor a valid business visa for Singapore and cannot be used as such. However, you can walk around the airport without a visa; this is the only visa free transit facility.

Indians carrying this travel document may enter the country for a maximum of 30 days Per Entry It is a Single Entry visa document and expires 30 days after issued or until passport expires **.

If you wish to obtain it, just follow these three simple steps for visa application:

First Step: Complete the iVisa questionnaire with your personal and travel details. After that, you can choose the type of processing.

Second Step: Make the payment for the transaction. But before that, ensure all the information entered is correct. If the personal data doesn't match, the process will be canceled.

Third Step: Finally, attach all the required documents and confirm.

Once the process is complete, you will receive a confirmation email. If you do not find it in your inbox, it may be in the SPAM folder.

Can I get any travel documents as an Indian citizen living in Malaysia?

As an Indian citizen, iVisa offers you to apply online for an SG Arrival Card even if you reside in Malaysia or are leaving from the Sabah Kuching International Airport. However, our services work worldwide so you can apply from anywhere.

The important thing is that you have the necessary documentation at hand. For example, you need an Indian visa, not a Malaysian visa or passport.

What are the documents required to apply for this travel document?

Before starting the application process, you must gather all the required documents. iVisa does not ask you for much, only these:

Passport - All Indian applicants must have a valid passport that doesn't expire for at least six months. It does not matter the residence, but the passport.

Digital photo - The photo must be taken within the last 3 months and meet all other guidelines for a passport photo. If you do not have a photo or do not know where to get it, iVisa offers an online [photo-taking service].

Round trip airline ticket - You will also be asked to present your roundtrip ticket when you arrive in Singapore. Also, the authorised visa agent will check this information.

Valid email address - iVisa will email your visa in PDF format. Do not forget to print it before you leave.

Online payment method - Payment must be made during the application process, so you must have a credit/debit card.

What are the costs and processing times of this travel document?

There are three processing options, each with a different processing time and price depending on the travel needs. These are as follows:

Standard Processing Time: 24 hours - USD $71.99 .

Rush Processing Time: 4 hours - USD $110.99 .

Super Rush Processing Time: 30 minutes - USD $163.99 .

This includes visa processing and government service fees. These visa fees are mandatory in this process.

When is the best time to visit Singapore?

The most effective way to make the destination experience memorable is to choose a reasonable date for your trip. Therefore, if you do not know the best date, we will give you some recommendations here.

The first thing to know is that there are no seasons in this country, only the monsoon that appears towards the end of the year. Otherwise, the temperature is usually warm all year round.

The first thing to know is that from November to January, the rains are torrential, and it is impossible to visit it. Another thing to keep in mind is that from the end of January to mid-February, prices in Singapore rise considerably.

As for temperatures, Singapore has an average annual temperature of 27ºC. That is to say, it is a warm country all year round. May is the warmest month, making it the perfect time to visit.

COVID-19 travel restrictions in the country

All travelers, regardless of nationality, must enter Singapore in compliance with specific rules specified by the government. However, this information may change, so we recommend reading the latest updates before traveling.

Regarding COVID-19 testing, all visitors 13 years of age or older who are fully vaccinated are exempt from having a negative PCR or antigen test result. However, unvaccinated or partially vaccinated visitors must show a negative PCR test result within 48 hours before departure.

The vaccination certificate is not mandatory to enter the country. Still, it is recommended because it exempts you from the COVID-19 test.

Finally, no citizen must undergo quarantine when entering the country.

Where can I get more information about the Singapore Arrival Card?

If you have questions about your trip to Singapore, please contact our customer service team at any time or email us at [email protected] . We are here to help you.

Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore hope to lure tourists from China with visa-free travel

Singapore, thailand and malaysia are hoping their visa waivers will lure thousands of chinese who are preparing to go abroad during the spring festival holiday.

Chinese engineer and aviation enthusiast Wei Meng is exactly the kind of visitor the tourism authorities in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand are looking for.

After Singapore scrapped visas for Chinese citizens, Wei, 44, said he ditched plans to go to Australia and booked a six-day holiday there instead. He said he also looked into visiting Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, the two other visa-free Southeast Asian countries, but decided on the city-state because of the Singapore Airshow, which opens to the public on Feb 24.

As thousands of Chinese prepare to go abroad during the first Spring Festival holiday since Beijing lifted pandemic travel restrictions last year, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia are hoping their unprecedented visa waivers will lure a large proportion of these visitors - and their much-needed spending.

Chinese travellers often complain about the length of time and the hassle it takes for them to obtain travel visas, and their passport is 62nd on the Henley Passport Index, which ranks the passports of 199 countries according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa.

While waiving visas can make a destination more attractive, China's slowing economic growth, job uncertainties and decline in income this year are likely to temper any outbound travel, analysts say.

"There is a feeling that the economic hardships and lack of disposable income are hitting much harder than in other parts of the world and that any travel is therefore staying within China where costs are lower," said John Grant, chief analyst at travel data firm OAG, adding that the three Southeast Asian countries "may be looking for the trickles."

BIG SPENDERS

Before the pandemic, Chinese tourists were a vital source of revenue, accounting for more than a quarter of all holiday makers to Thailand in 2019. Chinese visitors were also the top spenders in Singapore, splashing out over S$4 billion ($3 billion) that same year.

Even though fewer Chinese are travelling than before the pandemic, Chinese account for the bulk of visitors to Thailand, which launched its visa waiver in September, and tourism authorities there say they expect 177,000 Chinese tourists for the Lunar New Year holiday, more than three-times 2023 levels.

"The direction has been good since the visa free programme," said Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, deputy governor at the Tourism Authority of Thailand. "It's starting to get back to pre-pandemic levels."

Malaysia's visa-free deal for Chinese started in December, and it is hoping to attract 5-7 million Chinese visitors this year, which would be almost double pre-pandemic levels.

For the Lunar New Year, hotels including those under The Ascott Limited group, are launching promotions such as discounts and special activities and snacks for the festival.

Because of its status as an Asian air traffic hub, Singapore is ahead of its Southeast Asian rivals in flying in Chinese visitors, with the number of direct flights connecting mainland China rising nearly 5% this month from the same month in 2019.

Both Malaysia and Thailand still have far fewer direct flights: 33% and 17% less than 2019 levels respectively, data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows.

Why Malaysia, Thailand are allowing visa-free travel for desi tourists

Malaysia has followed in the footsteps of Thailand and Sri Lanka by allowing visa-free travel to Indians. The move comes as several countries see the value in a desi tourist – who is travelling much more and willing to spend much more

Why Malaysia, Thailand are allowing visa-free travel for desi tourists

Want to travel for the upcoming Christmas-New Year holidays? Malaysia would serve well as your next holiday destination after the country’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on Sunday that it would be scrapping entry visa requirements for citizens of India beginning 1 December.

On Sunday, Malaysia ’s PM Ibrahim said, “Starting 1 December, we will give additional facilities of 30 days of visa exemption to citizens of India and China to come to Malaysia.”

The aim is to boost tourism and, in turn, push the economy upwards. And the move comes after Anwar had last month announced plans to improve visa facilities next year to encourage the entry of tourists and investors, “especially from India and China.”

But why is it that countries like Malaysia, and others are providing visa-free travel to Indians? What is the benefit of such a move?

We explore the situation and give you the answers.

Which countries are granting visa-free travel to Indians?

Recently, several countries have announced visa waivers for Indians, opening doors for hassle-free journeys. A few weeks ago, Thailand announced that Indian nationals could enter the Asian country without a visa, effective from 10 November. Valid until 10 May 2024, the country is allowing Indian tourists to stay in Thailand for 30 days for tourism purposes only.

Similarly, Sri Lanka announced a visa-free entry initiative for visitors from India. This was a part of a pilot project to rebuild the debt-trapped island nation’s tourism till 31 March 2024. Apart from Indian tourists, travellers from six other countries, including China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand, will also be able to visit Sri Lanka, without a fee.

Reports state that Vietnam is also considering granting short-term visa waivers to Indians in order to boost tourism. According to the Vietnamese news agency VnExpress , Nguyen Van Hung, Vietnam’s minister of culture, sports, and tourism, has called for waivers for major markets such as China and India to help drive tourism recovery. This was announced on 22 November at a conference presided over by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Malaysia, too, on Sunday announced the waiver of visas to Indians in a bid to encourage tourism in the country.

In fact, according to a July report, Indians could travel to 57 destinations without needing a visa.

Besides countries granting visa waivers, some have made the visa process easier. For instance, Australia has made “significant efforts” to simplify, speed up and streamline the visa application process for Indian travellers. Russia , too, has started issuing electronic visas (e-visas) to Indian passport holders. As per reports, the move was aimed at helping visitors get travel approval faster for diverse purposes including tourism, business trips and guest visits.

What’s the reason behind such a move?

There are a number of factors why countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and others are considering or granting visa-free travel to Indians.

Let us first consider Malaysia. A visa-free entry makes travel easier, luring an increasing number of tourists to the country, and boosting its economy.

By waiving visa requirements, Malaysia hopes to woo more Indian tourists to the nation. According to government data, China and India are Malaysia’s fourth and fifth-largest source markets respectively.

Government data reveals that Malaysia recorded 9.16 million tourist arrivals between January and June this year, with 4,98,540 from China and 2,83,885 from India. That compared to 1.5 million arrivals from China and 3,54,486 from India in the same period of 2019, prior to the pandemic.

The Malaysian administration hopes that with more Indians coming into the country, spending will increase and its economy will get a much-deserved boost.

And this trend isn’t restricted to Malaysia alone. Countries the world over are seeing the value of Indian tourists. In 2022, over 20 million Indians travelled abroad with tourism being the third biggest reason for doing so. And in the first four months of 2023, nearly 8.5 million have travelled abroad, already touching two-fifths of the full-year figure of 2022.

Moreover, a report titled ‘How India Travels’ released by Booking.com and McKinsey & Company, projected that Indian travellers’ total expenditure will surge to $410 billion, positioning India as the fourth largest global spender. This is a substantial 173 per cent increase from 2019, when Indian travellers collectively spent $150 billion, ranking India as the sixth largest global spender.

The report further added that the number of trips by Indian travellers is predicted to jump from 2.3 billion in 2019 to an astounding five billion in 2030. As Santosh Kumar, country manager for India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Indonesia at Booking.com told CNBCTV18 that Indian travellers’ willingness to explore, make a unique opportunity for India’s travel industry to provide attractive, personalised, and sustainable experiences.

Arshdeep Anand, director of Holiday Moods Adventures added to Free Press Journal that “Indians are big spenders and destinations have come to realise this.”

Rajeev Kale, president and country head for holidays, MICE and visa at Thomas Cook, also was quoted as telling The Economic Times , “Indians are travelling like never before,” adding that the company has seen a 200 per cent surge in demand for the January-June period this year versus the year earlier.

There’s also another reason why countries are granting visa-free travel to Indians. Currently, Indians have to endure a long wait for Schengen and US visas . Realising this, the countries are luring the potential travellers to their countries.

Why are Indians travelling so much?

But what’s driving Indians to be such travellers? Many experts state that this trend is primarily driven by wanderlust.

A strong economy – India is the fifth largest economy in the world, behind the US, China, Germany and Japan – is also fuelling Indians’ desire to travel.

Omri Morgenshtern, CEO of travel and bookings website Agoda, suggests that this rise in travel can be attributed, to some extent, to the geographical distance between countries and India. Moreover, low-cost carriers are enabling a larger number of Indians to book foreign holidays.

However, one news report offered a different perspective on Indians’ desire to travel. A leisure report by Booking.com showed that social status, and not any other interest like discovering a new locale, is the over-riding factor that drives a vast majority of Indians to travel.

Given how much Indians love the island country, this Schengen-type visa is nothing short of a blessing. The highly-celebrated move is a step towards improving the relationship between Indian and Malaysian governments.

The Malaysian Prime Minister also wants to promote tourism in his country with this new visa policy. In a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Razak said.

This excellent step would not only help Malaysia, but its neighbouring countries Singapore and Indonesia too. Before planning your trip, you should check the travel guides of all the countries individually to plan your trip better.

“History binds us together. Indian languages, culture and food are popular in Malaysia. I'm a fan of Indian films, especially after visiting Chennai. I would like more Indians to visit Malaysia and have decided on no visa fee, online application approval within 48 hours, and multiple-entry e-visa to be accorded for Indian nationals."

Razak added that his government will also raise all visa fee and charges for Indians coming to Malaysia.

This, along with the maximum 48-hour limit for visa approval, and we have India's favourite foreign destination.

Malaysia is already popular with Indian travellers. In 2016, 540,530 Indians arrived in Malaysia, and this new visa policy is guaranteed to boost that number. This welcoming initiative by the Malaysian Prime Minister might also lead the way for other South-East Asian countries to take steps in similar directions.
