State Rail History

Like most Appalachian states (notably West Virginia and Kentucky), Tennessee was important to railroads for its rich veins of bituminous coal.

The state was also home to several major cities like Memphis, Chattanooga, and Nashville.  In addition, key north-south main lines of the Illinois Central and Gulf, Mobile & Ohio passed through its western fringe on their way to Chicago and the Gulf Coast (New Orleans).

According to the book, " Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis: A History Of 'The Dixie Line' ," by Dain Schult, Tennessee's railroading origins began with the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad's (N&C) chartering on December 11, 1845 by the General Assembly.

Its purpose was to link its namesake cities with the eastern terminus of Chattanooga, thereby providing a connection with the recently completed Western & Atlantic continuing eastward into Atlanta.  The N&C's long-term goal was to provide a through connection from the east coast to southern Appalachia's interior.

While it never reached the cities of  Savannah, Wilmington, or Charleston, as initially hoped, it nevertheless proved an important transportation artery for Tennessee.

Its original, 152 mile line was finished in February, 1854 while the addition of the Nashville & Northwestern Railroad in August, 1868 provided an extension to Hickman, Kentucky.  In 1873 the N&C was renamed the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway.

The company would ultimately never reach the Gateway City but did connect to Memphis and Paducah, Kentucky while another branch offered an extension into northern Alabama.

Relations between the NC&StL and nearby rival Louisville & Nashville had cooled considerably by the latter 1870s.  The L&N was in much better financial condition and realized a NC&StL extension to St. Louis would potentially harm its future prospects.

As a result, it used sly tactics to gain stock control in January, 1880.  In the modern age the nearly 1,200-mile NC&StL was a vital component of the L&N.  It remained a separate corporate entity until 1957.

Tennessee's rail mileage peaked in 1920 at 4,078 with most service provided through the above-mentioned names along with the Southern Railway and Tennessee Central.

Following many mergers and abandonments, the state is now home to just 2,552 miles according to the Association of American Railroads.

Today, the state's tourist railroads attempt to preserve this bygone era. If you truly want to experience the splendor of Tennessee rail travel, plan your ride during the peak fall foliage season when mountains explode with vibrant colors.  To learn more about the state's excursion rides please read on below.

If you are interested in specific events, such as "The Polar Express," Halloween, Thomas the Tank Engine excursions, or fall foliage events please visit the  main tourist trains section of this website .

Stay on marked trails, take only pictures, pack out your trash, and be considerate of others who share the trails and parks you explore.

Remember that waterfalls and rocky summits can be dangerous. Never try to climb waterfalls or get close to a ledge to get a selfie.

When you're exploring the wilderness, it's better to be safe than to be a statistic!

We had a wonderful experience viewing the fabulous scenery and riding on the old train. The conductor pointed out places of interest and even gave us a banjo serenade in the afternoon. Coffee and snacks were available on the train. Because we were the only group on the train we were able to move from car to car and visit with each other. A most relaxing day!

This tour was fantastic. Starlene did an amazing job of pointing out highlights of sites, food, healthcare and Nashville in general. For a new visitor, she told us about things to help us plan our time. There is so much food, beverage, and music for most along with sports. Oh and did I mention music?? There is more than just country music. Many genres are throughout and you hear a sample of many along the tour.

It was easy to use and had plenty of great stops. The drivers were safe and knowledgeable about the city. I will definitely tell friends and family to use the tour bus, it worked perfectly for us!

We had an amazing tour guide who showed us not only all the sites from the filming of “Nashville”, but also many other interesting places in town. We did get to see the Bluebird Cafe, even though it was not listed on the Sunday tour, which was a bonus for us. It was a very enjoyable tour with lots of interesting highlights of the show. Now we need to go back and watch it again.

This was our first trip to Nashville and we were looking for a fun way to get an overview of the city. This tour did just that. Our guide, Starlene, was very knowledgable and friendly. Our young children (3 years old) enjoyed the bus ride. It gave us a better sense of the city and some great ideas for things to do during the rest of our time there.

Plans for Tennessee passenger train from Memphis to Nashville to Chattanooga steam ahead

A new passenger railway connecting Memphis to Atlanta is underway, taking the first significant step toward making it a reality.

On April 28, a request-for-qualification (RFQ) was submitted with the City of Chattanooga on behalf of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Corridor Identification program for planning and scoping purposes.

The RFQ request is seeking firms to help with the initial planning and design for how a railway will best connect Atlanta to Chattanooga to Nashville to Memphis.

Ellis Smith, Chattanooga director of intergovernmental and external affairs, said this will be the first step toward bringing a high-quality firm on board to help execute the scoping phase of the project. Smith said representatives from all four cities and representatives from both Tennessee and Georgia will be involved. The RFQ bids will remain open until June 11, according to the application.

In December 2023, the FRA allocated $500,000 for analyzing a potential railway connecting Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga and Atlanta .

Why is the RFQ submitted in Chattanooga and not Memphis?

The City of Chattanooga and Mayor Tim Kelly's office led the application process for the region's Corridor ID and, thus, the initial planning will go through that city's municipal process, Smith said.

That said, the application outlines the four-city loop as the "Sunbelt-Atlantic Connector." Additionally, the application is part of the FRA's Corridor Identification and Development program . The program is looking to expand passenger lines through selected corridors nationwide.

Following a statewide study in summer 2023, Memphis, Nashville and Chattanooga were selected as hubs for a future passenger rail.

NEW JOBS IN TENNESSEE: Ford supplier Avancez coming to West Tennessee, will create more than 500 jobs

So, what does this mean for securing a passenger railway in Tennessee?

Ultimately it is the first step toward that. The $500,000 grant awarded in December 2023 will be used to help fund this RFQ (once a firm is selected).

That process will include looking at existing infrastructure, estimated costs, ridership demographics and potential station locations and how a passenger railway would be constructed in Tennessee and Georgia. A new passenger railway may include a combination of new tracks along with existing freight lines.

In comparison, a 2023 Amtrak analysis of the Nashville-Chattanooga-Atlanta region estimated a passenger line would help create an estimated 10,684 jobs and an estimated $81.5 million in economic activity over a 20-year span. That analysis was included in the initial Corridor ID program application.

For more information on how this potential passenger railway would work and how it compares to existing lines, take a look at the December 2023 report .

Smith acknowledged that this pending study will outline how to effectively build a passenger line between the four cities and serve as a master plan for the project going forward.

Taylor Swift Nashville concert review: 5 moments from her return on the 'Eras' tour

train tours nashville

Believe the hype.

The 'Eras' tour arrived Friday in Nashville with a mountain of expectations. Three nights in a stadium? In the city where her career started? After a mad dash for tickets? And it's her first major tour in nearly five years?

A normal entertainer may balk at these stakes. But Taylor Swift isn't like other entertainers.

Music City's three-night run on the most talked-about tour of the year kicked off Friday inside Nissan Stadium with record-smashing singalongs, show-stopping duets and an only-in-Nashville surprise. Behind Swift's unmatched ambition and sharp-eyed fanfare, it was the kind of show that'll be talked about long after the final song ended.

Not too bad for a girl who moved to Hendersonville nearly two decades ago to chase her songwriting dreams.

Taylor Swift in Nashville: What surprise songs did she song on storm-delayed night 3?

"This dream that I've had since I was so little I can't even remember first having it, this dream came true for me because of this town and the people in it and the love and nurturing and support I received from this town," she said to kick off Friday's show. "I can't tell you how many feelings I have right now."

From swelling crowds to surprise announcements, read on for five highlights from inside opening night of the 'Eras' tour at Nissan Stadium.

More on 'Eras' in Nashville: Taylor Swift in Nashville: Who we want to see surprise fans at Nissan Stadium

Her marathon era

Like the name suggests, Swift covers so much ground in this show. With a 45-song set spanning 10 albums in nearly three-and-a-half hours, 'Eras' embraces a marathoner spirit typically reserved for catch-'em-while-you-can rock icons like Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney.

But unlike blasting "Born To Run" or leading a spontaneous singalong to "Hey Jude," Swift choreographs her set like a conductor would lead an orchestra or a director would deliver a musical. Each moving part — dancers, band members, set pieces — plays a role in telling a story of the "era" being chronicled on stage.

Backed by towering screens and flanked by her reliable dancers, Swift opened the show by inviting her audience into the rainbow-drenched songs of 2019 album "Lover" before donning a sun-soaked dress in a callback to 2008's "Fearless" and embracing a J.R.R. Tolkien-like fantasy for a handful of spellbinding cuts from 2020 album "Evermore." She traveled through the eras in distinct acts with full and abridged songs — like a stadium-sized Broadway production that at one moment soaked the audience in red lighting and backdrops (because, you know, "Red") before recreating a fireside hang for the folk-tinged "Betty" and other songs off Grammy Award-winning album "Folklore."

She offered a fresh spin on well-worn eras — sometimes literally, like when her backup dancers rode beach cruisers across the stage during "Blank Space" — and gave plenty of attention to the four (!!!) albums released since she last embarked on a coast-to-coast tour, including "Anti-Hero," "Bejeweled" and more from the set-closing "Midnights" era.

Her record-breaking era

Swift invited plenty of company to join Friday night's career-spanning adventure. An audience of nearly 70,500 attended the show, setting a single-night Nissan Stadium attendance record, eclipsing past concerts and professional sporting events.

"Oh my beloved Nashville, you're making me feel so good right now," Swift said early in the show. "Tonight is the highest-attended event to take place in the stadium because 70,000 of you decided to hang with us this evening."

And the benchmark may not hold for long. With two more shows slated for this weekend, Swift could break her own record before leaving town.

More: Nashville pop artist Gayle dreamed of opening for Taylor Swift. Now it's a reality

Her fans' era

They dress for the occasion. They sing along to every word (even when it's 10-minute redux of "All Too Well"). They don't leave the stands until the last note rings out. Beyond songwriter, Swift's superpower may be the dedicated fandom that'll follow her through each cryptic clue, ticketing rush and re-recorded album.

On Friday, these so-called Swifties turned out with bejeweled eye pieces (because "Bejeweled"), head-to-toe cloaks (because "Willow"), snake-covered t-shirts (because "Reputation") and tie-dye pastels (because "Lover"). Some came ready to hear songs that climbed the charts before they were born, while others reveled in re-living eras from life's formative years.

And as each new song kicked in, they jumped at a chance to shout each word — like a group of friends passing around the aux cable on a late night filled with unforgettable songs. Only instead of a designated DJ, they're singing along with Swift.

Or, as Swift described her crowd at one point Friday night: "You guys are, like, on fire."

Her surprise era

After weeks of  well-placed clues and TikTok-fueled speculation , Taylor Swift confirmed Friday — mid-show, no less — which album comes next in her expansive "Taylor's Version" project: "Speak Now."

"I've been planning something for a while," Swift said as the Friday night audience exploded with applause. "It's my love language with you. I plot. I scheme. I plan. And then I get to tell you about it."

As the album title and July 7 release date flashed across the stadium screen, she added: "I think, rather than me speaking about it ... I'd rather just show you."

Swift put a bow on the "Taylor's Version" unveiling with an acoustic rendition of "Sparks Fly," a 2011 single off "Speak Now" before taking audience members back to her self-titled debut album with a piano-backed rendition of 2006's "Teardrops On My Guitar."

"Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" wasn't the only time Swift surprised her fans on Friday night, either. The singer enlisted "Eras" tour opener and indie-rock favorite Phoebe Bridgers for an acoustic duet of "Nothing New," a song the two released together on 2021's "Red (Taylor's Version)."

"This is a regular day in my life," Bridgers quipped as she stepped up the microphone hours after performing her own set.

Swift replied, "I feel the same, getting to sing this song with you for the very first time in a sold-out stadium."

Her openers' era

Bridgers played main support Friday, her first night on the "Eras" tour. As on-and-off rain covered the expansive stage, the singer-songwriter and her five-piece band ripped through dad-dedicated favorite "Kyoto," the sobering "Graceland Too" and other cuts from 2020 album "Punisher."

And the first surprise of the night came during Bridgers' set, when she invited Lucy Dacus and Nashville's own Julien Baker — AKA indie supergroup Boygenius — on stage to sing the trio's new single "Not Strong Enough." Running up and down the stage together, the Boygenius members backed Bridgers through her set-closing number "I Know The End."

"We gotta talk about this," Swift said during her set. "You got to see a genius, a friend ... our creative savoir. I can't believe [Phoebe's] on tour with us."

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
